It is still a precious metal, coined but still a precious metal. Yes one or two mations coins were trusted but that trust was based on the purity of the metal. When there is no precious metal backing the money then the money is backed by peoples confidence in the ability of the nation printing the money to make sure the money is good. This means that the “reserve currency” is what backs the currencies of the other nations. When the currencies are precious metals they are backed by the weight of the precious metal in the coins. Not the currency of other nations.
