“RESIDENTS of major German city Essen were left enraged after police and government officials ignored their no-go zone fears, saying they are “sick” of hearing about it.
Locals in the City’s Altenessen district brought begged officials to help, with one telling the City’s Mayor and the chief of police “I was born here and I do not feel safe anymore.”
But the officials shot down the claims of concerned locals, with Police Chief Frank Richter saying “I’m sick of it.”
The City’s Lord Mayor Thomas Kufen also knocked down the claims of his constituents, saying “Altenessen is not a no-go area, the people here are just angry”.
Others told horror stories of drug related crime and brawls, claiming police refused to respond in time to offer assistance to law abiding citizens.
Locals were left with no option but to laugh as the police official continued to dispute the claims that their local area was unsafe – despite people claiming they had been forced to leave the district they had called home after feeling unsafe.
German officials and police have long complained of a cover up of No-go zones within their precincts.
In 2011 former Chief Police commissioner Bernhard Witthaut said: “Every police commissioner and interior minister will deny it.
“But of course we know where we can go with the police car and where, even initially, only with the personnel carrier.
“The reason is that our colleagues can no longer feel safe there in twos, and have to fear becoming the victim of a crime themselves.
“Even worse: in these areas, crimes no longer result in charges. They are left to themselves.”…”

The Anadolu Agency, citing unnamed security officials, said a bomb exploded on a highway linking the provinces of Mardin and Diyarbakir, killing three soldiers inside a military vehicle. The agency said the bomb was planted by militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.
Earlier, eight soldiers were hurt when an improvised explosive device planted went off on a road in the province of Van as their vehicle was passing by. Two of the soldiers are in serious condition, it said. A similar attack on a military vehicle on a road in Hakkari wounded four other soldiers, the agency reported.
The military has launched operations to catch the assailants.
Fighting between state forces and the PKK resumed last year after a cease-fire collapsed. Anadolu says more than 600 security force members and thousands of PKK militants have been killed since then.

A court has upheld hate speech charges against Dutch far-right MP Geert Wilders over comments he made about Moroccans.
The leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV) sparked outrage when he asked supporters at a rally in 2014 whether they wanted “fewer or more Moroccans in your city and in the Netherlands?”
After the crowd shouted back “fewer” Mr Wilders said: “We’re going to organise that”.
The MP appealed to have the charges thrown out, but his objections were dismissed by The Hague District Court.
The comments triggered more than 6,400 complaints and criticism from within Mr Wilders’ party.
Five organisations and 56 people have registered as victims of the remarks, judges said.
Mr Wilders’ lawyers slammed the trial as a “political case” ahead of parliamentary elections in March.
They argued that the MP had merely “put forward his party’s political programme” and claimed the case could have “far reaching political consequences for democracy”.
At an earlier hearing, Geert-Jan Knoops, defending Mr Wilders, told judges that freedom of expression is “the last freedom Mr Wilders has left”.
But the court said that although politicians are entitled to freedom of expression they should “avoid public statements that feed intolerance”…”

Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta’s membership on the executive board of an energy company, Joule Unlimited, which received millions from a Putin-connected Russian government fund, also included “75,000 common shares,” according to an email exchange uncovered by the Wikileaks hacks.
In the newly-uncovered email exchanged under the subject “Podesta Outstanding Docs for Joule,” Eryn Sepp, who was an assistant to Podesta at the Center for American Progress, forwarded a message to Podesta from Mark C. Solakian, who was Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Joule Unlimited Technologies, Inc.
“It is my understanding that John transferred the resulting 75,000 common shares from the option exercise to the Leonidio LLC.,” Slovakian wrote in a January 2014 email, referencing the Delaware-based holding company. “As such, we would need to edit the Transfer of Share Agreement to reflect the transfer of 75,000 common shares to the LLC.”
Podesta’s membership on the board of directors of Joule Unlimited was first revealed in research from Breitbart News Senior Editor-at-Large and Government Accountability Institute (GAI) President Peter Schweizer.
In the report, tilted, “From Russia with Money: Hillary Clinton, the Russian Reset, and Cronyism,” it’s revealed that Podesta joined the Joule Unlimited board in June 2011.
“The disclosure that Clinton Chair John Podesta transferred his shares in Putin-backed Joule Unlimited to an anonymous holding company when he joined the Obama Administration is extremely concerning,” said Donald Trump Senior Communications Advisor Jason Miller in a statement.
Podesta failed to fully disclose his position on Joule Unlimited’s board of directors and include it in his federal financial disclosures, as required by law, before he became President Obama’s senior adviser.
“Because the holding company is completely anonymous, we do not know whether or not he still has deep financial ties to Vladimir Putin and his regime,” Trump advisor Jason Miller wrote. “As such, Mr. Podesta needs to either reveal who is behind the holding company or he must resign from the Clinton campaign immediately.”
Podesta also wrote to Slovakian about the “transfer of Joule shares” in a January 3, 2014 letter.

For the readers that don’t know much about stocks and corporate structures Common Stocks are normally income producing stocks but depending on the way the corporation is structured they may not have any voting rights in the internal elections. Voting rights are often reserved for the preferred stocks, which normally pay much less to no income.
Some corporations let the owners of common stock vote and some don’t.
One wonders if the Podestas’ influence was purchased with these shares given the current administration’s tepid reaction to Russia’s appropriation of Crimea? A quick search online, using the search terms “Podesta” & “Crimea” reveals:

The most important revelation in the WikiLeaks dump of John Podesta’s emails has nothing to do with Hillary Clinton. The messages go all the way back to 2008, when Podesta served as co-chair of President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team. And a month before the election, the key staffing for that future administration was almost entirely in place, revealing that some of the most crucial decisions an administration can make occur well before a vote has been cast.
Michael Froman, who is now U.S. trade representative but at the time was an executive at Citigroup, wrote an email to Podesta on October 6, 2008, with the subject “Lists.” Froman used a Citigroup email address. He attached three documents: a list of women for top administration jobs, a list of non-white candidates, and a sample outline of 31 cabinet-level positions and who would fill them. “The lists will continue to grow,” Froman wrote to Podesta, “but these are the names to date that seem to be coming up as recommended by various sources for senior level jobs.”
The cabinet list ended up being almost entirely on the money. It correctly identified Eric Holder for the Justice Department, Janet Napolitano for Homeland Security, Robert Gates for Defense, Rahm Emanuel for chief of staff, Peter Orszag for the Office of Management and Budget, Arne Duncan for Education, Eric Shinseki for Veterans Affairs, Kathleen Sebelius for Health and Human Services, Melody Barnes for the Domestic Policy Council, and more. For the Treasury, three possibilities were on the list: Robert Rubin, Larry Summers, and Timothy Geithner.

This week, liberals have been repeating their frequent claim that voter fraud doesn’t exist. A recent Salon article argues that “voter fraud just isn’t a problem in Pennsylvania,” despite evidence to the contrary. Another article argues that voter fraud is entirely in the imagination of those who use voter ID laws to deny minorities the right to vote.
Yet as the election approaches, more and more cases of voter fraud are beginning to surface. In Colorado, multiple instances were found of dead people attempting to vote. Stunningly, “a woman named Sara Sosa who died in 2009 cast ballots in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.” In Virginia, it was found that nearly 20 voter applications were turned in under the names of dead people.

Dutch court upholds hate speech case against far-right MP Geert Wilders
The Hague (AFP) – A Dutch court on Friday upheld hate speech charges against anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders, meaning his trial will now start later this month.
“The court rejects all the defence’s objections,” judge Hendrik Steenhuis told The Hague district court.
Wilders’ lawyers last month urged judges at a preliminary hearing to drop the charges against the far-right leader, slamming it as a “political case” ahead of elections due in March.

MINSK (Reuters) – A Belarussian court started on Friday a closed trial of a blogger – known for his fierce criticism of Russia – who is accused of inciting hatred and distributing pornography in a case activists say is politically motivated.
Edward Palchis, the creator of a Belarussian nationalist website, was arrested earlier this year in Russia and extradited to Belarus where he could face up to four years in prison.
Human rights campaigners say he is being targeted for criticizing Russian foreign policy, its annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula and role in the east Ukrainian separatist conflict.
“We believe the case is politically motivated. We think its main motive is to clamp down on the political activities of Palchis,” Belarussian activist Valentin Stefanovich told Reuters.
As the trial started, some activists were outside the courthouse, which was guarded by several dozen police.

Deutsche Bank considers thousands more job cuts – source
FRANKFURT (Reuters) – Deutsche Bank’s finance chief told staff representatives last month that job cuts at the bank could be double that planned, a step that could remove 10,000 further employees, a person with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
Although no such decision has yet been taken, Marcus Schenck’s remarks, at an internal meeting, signal the lender is considering further significant cost cuts, as it faces a multi-billion-euro fine and a crisis of confidence among investors.
“Schenck said that the bank would need to cut another 10,000 staff to bring down costs,” said a person who attended the meeting with the chief financial officer, asking not to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter.
Deutsche Bank declined to comment.
Such cuts, if agreed, would likely take many years but setting such a goal could reassure investors that the bank is determined to tackle costs that sources said the European Central Bank sees as bloated.
If 10,000 job losses were ultimately to follow the 9,000 announced by management in October 2015, roughly one in five of the bank’s workforce around the globe would be affected.

Islamic State crushes rebellion plot in Mosul as army closes in
BAGHDAD (Reuters) – Islamic State has crushed a rebellion plot in Mosul, led by one of the group’s commanders who aimed to switch sides and help deliver the caliphate’s Iraqi capital to government forces, residents and Iraqi security officials said.
Islamic State (IS) executed 58 people suspected of taking part in the plot after it was uncovered last week. Residents, who spoke to Reuters from some of the few locations in the city that have phone service, said the plotters were killed by drowning and their bodies were buried in a mass grave in a wasteland on the outskirts of the city.
Among them was a local aide of IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who led the plotters, according to matching accounts given by five residents, by Hisham al-Hashimi, an expert on IS affairs that advises the government in Baghdad and by colonel Ahmed al-Taie, from Mosul’s Nineveh province Operation Command’s military intelligence.
Reuters is not publishing the name of the plot leader to avoid increasing the safety risk for his family, nor the identities of those inside the city who spoke about the plot.

Syria’s Assad says taking Aleppo from rebels key to pushing ‘terrorists’ back to Turkey
MOSCOW/BEIRUT (Reuters) – Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad said on Friday that the Syrian army’s capture of Aleppo, which has come under renewed bombardment in an effort to seize its rebel-held sector, would be “a very important springboard” to pushing “terrorists” back to Turkey.
Rescue workers said that Syria’s military backed by Russian warplanes had killed more than 150 people in eastern Aleppo this week, in support of its offensive against the city.
Rising casualties in Aleppo, where many buildings have been reduced to rubble or are lacking roofs or walls, have prompted an international outcry and a renewed diplomatic push, with talks between the United States and Russia planned for Saturday.
“You have to keep cleaning this area and to push the terrorists to Turkey, to go back to where they come from or to kill them. There’s no other option,” Assad said in an interview with Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda.
“Aleppo is going to be a very important springboard to do this move,” added Assad.
As the air strikes and shelling of the city’s east intensified after a brief period of relative calm, Syria’s government approved a United Nations plan to allow aid convoys into the most besieged areas of Syria, with the exception of Aleppo.

Daring U.S. pipeline sabotage spawned by lobster boat coal protest
CALGARY, Alberta/NEW YORK (Reuters) – Pipeline sabotage by environmental activists that shook the North American energy industry this week had its roots in a 2013 protest off Massachusetts, when two men in a 32-foot lobster boat blocked a 40,000-ton coal shipment to a power station.
Three years on, Jay O’Hara and Ken Ward, the activists involved in the “Lobster Boat Blockade”, helped mastermind Tuesday’s audacious attempt to shut five major cross-border pipelines which can carry millions of barrels of crude from Canada’s oil sands region to the United States.
Protest group Climate Direct Action has said the action was taken to support the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, which is protesting construction of the $3.7 billion Dakota Access pipeline carrying oil from North Dakota to the U.S. Gulf Coast over fears of damage to sacred land and water supplies.
O’Hara, Ward and a small group of climate-change activists spent months preparing for the biggest coordinated move on U.S. energy infrastructure ever undertaken by environmental protesters.
The simple plan’s effectiveness highlighted the vulnerability of energy infrastructure and left policy makers and energy executives mulling how to safeguard hundreds of thousands of miles of pipeline from the growing activist threat.
In early-morning raids, around a dozen activists wearing safety coats and hard hats simultaneously broke into valve stations above the pipelines in remote locations stretching 1,600 miles (2,575 km) across four northern U.S. states.

Turkish-trained forces to join Iraqi Mosul operation: Anadolu
ISTANBUL (Reuters) – Forces trained by the Turkish military at the Bashiqa camp in northern Iraq will take part in the planned operation to drive Islamic State out of the city of Mosul, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency reported on Friday.
It cited officials who took part in talks between Turkey and the United States, as well as Iraqi sources, as saying the operation would begin within a few days, “if there is no extraordinary development”.
Turkey has been locked in a fierce row with Iraq over who should take part in the Mosul assault. On Thursday, President Tayyip Erdogan’s spokesman warned any mistake in the operation could result in hundreds of thousands of refugees.
Mosul, home to up to 1.5 million people, has been at the heart of Islamic State’s self-declared caliphate in Iraq since 2014. The U.S.-backed assault on the city has been expected to begin this month.
Anadolu said the Turkish-trained forces would participate in the operation together with the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga forces of the Kurdistan Regional Government in northern Iraq, with the latter launching the operation.

“Bennett suspends Israeli cooperation with UNESCO after Temple Mount vote
Education Minister Nafatali Bennett decided Friday morning to immediately freeze all Israeli cooperation with UNESCO, because of its decision to declare top Jewish holy sites Muslim.
Due to Bennett’s decision there will be no meetings with UNESCO officials, cooperation in international conference or professional cooperation with the organization.
Bennett said he made the decision because UNESCO has given a boost to terror.
“Your decision denies history and encourages terror,” Bennett wrote the countries of UNESCO. “Those who give prizes to the supporters of Jihad in Jerusalem the same week that two Jews are murdered in the city could god forbid encourage more victims.”
“The western world stands before UNESCO and against terror, just as they oppose terror in Aleppo they must unite against diplomatic terror in Jerusalem. ”
Bennett will hold a meeting next week in order to decide on further steps.
On Thursday, in a 24-6 vote, UNESCO gave preliminary approval to a resolution that denies Jewish ties to its most holy religious sites: the Temple Mount and the Western Wall.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu slammed the vote stating: “The theater of the absurd continues at the UN.”
“Today UNESCO adopted its second decision this year denying the Jewish people’s connection to the Temple Mount, our holiest site for more than 3,000 years,” he said. “What’s next? A UNESCO decision denying the connection between peanut butter and jelly? Batman and Robin? Rock ‘n’ roll?”
Twenty-six nations abstained from the vote and two were absent.
The six countries that voted in support of Israel were the United States, Great Britain, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Germany and Estonia.
Those who supported the motion included Algeria, Bangladesh, Brazil, Chad, China, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mauritania, Mexico, Morocco, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan and Vietnam.

Bombshell: Donors to Clinton Foundation expected ‘benefits in return for gifts
An independent “governance review” conducted by a prominent law firm that specializes in philanthropic issues concluded in December 2010 that the Clinton Foundation had a weak, rubber stamp board of directors, and that many of its donors had “an expectation of a quid pro quo benefits in return for gifts.”
The blistering review — made public Thursday by WikiLeaks — described a tax-exempt public foundation with none of the independent oversight required under federal charity law. The Clinton Foundation reported $187 million in net assets in 2011.
The decision to conduct the review was bitterly opposed by Bill Clinton’s long-time friends and political advisers.
The review was conducted by the New York law firm of Simpson Thacher and was requested by Chelsea Clinton who had profound misgivings about the operation of her parent’s foundation. Leading the review was Victoria Bjorklund, one of the nation’s top-ranked legal experts on good- governance practices for foundations and charities. She came out of retirement to lead the review.

reuters -Exclusive: Obama, aides expected to weigh Syria military options on Friday
U.S. President Barack Obama and his top foreign policy advisers are expected to meet on Friday to consider their military and other options in Syria as Syrian and Russian aircraft continue to pummel Aleppo and other targets, U.S. officials said.
Some top officials argue the United States must act more forcefully in Syria or risk losing what influence it still has over moderate rebels and its Arab, Kurdish and Turkish allies in the fight against Islamic State, the officials told Reuters.
One set of options includes direct U.S. military action such as air strikes on Syrian military bases, munitions depots or radar and anti-aircraft bases, said one official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.
This official said one danger of such action is that Russian and Syrian forces are often co-mingled, raising the possibility of a direct confrontation with Russia that Obama has been at pains to avoid.
U.S. officials said they consider it unlikely that Obama will order U.S. air strikes on Syrian government targets, and they stressed that he may not make any decisions at the planned meeting of his National Security Council.
One alternative, U.S. officials said, is allowing allies to provide U.S.-vetted rebels with more sophisticated weapons, although not shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles, which Washington fears could be used against Western airliners.
The White House declined to comment.
Friday’s planned meeting is the latest in a long series of internal debates about what, if anything, to do to end a 5-1/2 year civil war that has killed at least 300,000 people and displaced half the country’s population.
The ultimate aim of any new action could be to bolster the battered moderate rebels so they can weather what is now widely seen as the inevitable fall of rebel-held eastern Aleppo to the forces of Russian- and Iranian-backed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
It also might temper a sense of betrayal among moderate rebels who feel Obama encouraged their uprising by calling for Assad to go but then abandoned them, failing even to enforce his own “red line” against Syria’s use of chemical weapons.
This, in turn, might deter them from migrating to Islamist groups such as the Nusra Front, which the United States regards as Syria’s al Qaeda branch. The group in July said it had cut ties to al Qaeda and changed its name to Jabhat Fatah al-Sham. ANOTHER TRY AT DIPLOMACY
The U.S. and Russian foreign ministers will meet in Lausanne, Switzerland on Saturday to resume their failed effort to find a diplomatic solution, possibly joined by their counterparts from Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Iran, but
U.S. officials voiced little hope for success.
Friday’s planned meeting at the White House and the session in Lausanne occur as Obama, with just 100 days left in office, faces other decisions about whether to deepen U.S. military involvement in the Middle East — notably in Yemen and Iraq — a stance he opposed when he won the White House in 2008.
Earlier Thursday the United States launched cruise missiles at three coastal radar sites in areas of Yemen controlled by Iran-aligned Houthi forces, retaliating after failed missile attacks this week on a U.S. Navy destroyer, U.S. officials said.
In Iraq, U.S. officials are debating whether government forces will need more U.S. support both during and after their campaign to retake Mosul, Islamic State’s de facto capital in the country.
Some officials argue the Iraqis now cannot retake the city without significant help from Kurdish peshmerga forces, as well as Sunni and Shi’ite militias, and that their participation could trigger religious and ethnic conflict in the city.
In Syria, Washington has turned to the question of whether to take military action after its latest effort to broker a truce with Russia collapsed last month.
The United States has called for Assad to step down, but for years has seemed resigned to his remaining in control of parts of the country as it prosecutes a separate fight against Islamic State militants in Syria and in Iraq.
The U.S. policy is to target Islamic State first, a decision that has opened it to charges that it is doing nothing to prevent the humanitarian catastrophe in Syria and particularly in Aleppo, Syria’s largest city.
Renewed bombing of rebel-held eastern Aleppo has killed more than 150 people this week, rescue workers said, as Syria intensifies its Russian-backed offensive to take the whole city.
Anthony Cordesman of Washington’s Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank suggested the United States’ failure to act earlier in Syria, and in Aleppo in particular, had narrowed Obama’s options.
“There is only so long you can ignore your options before you don’t have any,” Cordesman said.

The Most Important WikiLeaks Revelation Isn’t About Hillary Clinton
What John Podesta’s emails from 2008 reveal about the way power works in the Democratic Party.
The most important revelation in the WikiLeaks dump of John Podesta’s emails has nothing to do with Hillary Clinton. The messages go all the way back to 2008, when Podesta served as co-chair of President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team. And a month before the election, the key staffing for that future administration was almost entirely in place, revealing that some of the most crucial decisions an administration can make occur well before a vote has been cast.
Michael Froman, who is now U.S. trade representative but at the time was an executive at Citigroup, wrote an email to Podesta on October 6, 2008, with the subject “Lists.” Froman used a Citigroup email address. He attached three documents: a list of women for top administration jobs, a list of non-white candidates, and a sample outline of 31 cabinet-level positions and who would fill them. “The lists will continue to grow,” Froman wrote to Podesta, “but these are the names to date that seem to be coming up as recommended by various sources for senior level jobs.”
The cabinet list ended up being almost entirely on the money. It correctly identified Eric Holder for the Justice Department, Janet Napolitano for Homeland Security, Robert Gates for Defense, Rahm Emanuel for chief of staff, Peter Orszag for the Office of Management and Budget, Arne Duncan for Education, Eric Shinseki for Veterans Affairs, Kathleen Sebelius for Health and Human Services, Melody Barnes for the Domestic Policy Council, and more. For the Treasury, three possibilities were on the list: Robert Rubin, Larry Summers, and Timothy Geithner.
This was October 6. The election was November 4. And yet Froman, an executive at Citigroup, which would ultimately become the recipient of the largest bailout from the federal government during the financial crisis, had mapped out virtually the entire Obama cabinet, a month before votes were counted. And according to the Froman/Podesta emails, lists were floating around even before that.
Many already suspected that Froman, a longtime Obama consigliere, did the key economic policy hiring while part of the transition team. We didn’t know he had so much influence that he could lock in key staff that early, without fanfare, while everyone was busy trying to get Obama elected. The WikiLeaks emails show even earlier planning; by September the transition was getting pre-clearance to assist nominees with financial disclosure forms.
We certainly want an incoming administration to be well-prepared and ready to go when power is transferred. For Obama, coming into office while the economy was melting down, this was particularly true. But the revelations also reinforce the need for critical scrutiny of Hillary Clinton, and for advocacy to ensure the next transition doesn’t go like the last, at least with respect to the same old Democrats scooping up all the positions of power well in advance.
Many liberal pundits have talked about the need to focus exclusively on Donald Trump, and the existential threat he presents, in the critical period before Election Day. And there is a logic to that idea: Trump would legitimately be a terrifying leader of the free world. But there are consequences to the kind of home-team political atmosphere that rejects any critical thought about your own side. If the 2008 Podesta emails are any indication, the next four years of public policy are being hashed out right now, behind closed doors. And if liberals want to have an impact on that process, waiting until after the election will be too late.
Who gets these cabinet-level and West Wing advisory jobs matters as much as policy papers or legislative initiatives. It will inform executive branch priorities and responses to crises. It will dictate the level of enforcement of existing laws. It will establish the point of view of an administration and the advice Hillary Clinton will receive. Its importance cannot be stressed enough, and the process has already begun.
The wing of the Democratic Party concerned about personnel decisions made its opinion known almost two years ago. Dan Geldon, now chief of staff to Senator Elizabeth Warren, met with Dan Schwerin, a top adviser to Clinton’s campaign, in January 2015. According to an email follow-up with Podesta and others, Geldon “was intently focused on personnel issues, laid out a detailed case against the Bob Rubin school of Democratic policy makers.” He was also “very critical of the Obama administration’s choices.”
The “Bob Rubin school” is named for the former top executive at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup and first Clinton administration Treasury secretary. It is composed precisely of the kinds of Democrats that the Warren wing opposes on domestic policy, particularly on financial matters. In the Obama administration, that school won out. Froman, chief of staff to Rubin at Treasury, gave options for Treasury secretary that ranged from Rubin himself to Summers and Geithner, two of his key protégés. In another 2008 email Rubin imagined for himself a “Harry Hopkins” position in the Obama administration, referring to Franklin Roosevelt’s top adviser.
The Rubin school dictated the Obama administration’s light-touch policy on bank misconduct (which resulted in no serious legal or fiduciary consequences for the major players) and its first-term approach to the financial crisis (which was defined by a stimulus package that even at the time was criticized for being woefully inadequate, as well as a premature turn to budget-cutting). These are exactly the flaws that Geldon, Warren’s emissary, stressed. According to Schwerin, he “spoke repeatedly about the need to have in place people with ambition and urgency who recognize how much the middle class is hurting and are willing to challenge the financial industry.”
Around the same time as that meeting with Geldon, the Clinton campaign was setting up a dinner meeting with its economic policy team, Geithner, Summers, and members of the investment firm Blackstone (along with Teresa Ghilarducci, a retirement security researcher).
This is a fight over who dominates the Democratic Party’s policy thinking in the short and long term. In 2008 the fight was invisible and one-sided, and the fix was in. In 2016 both sides are angling to get Clinton to adopt their framework. Those predisposed to consider Clinton some neoliberal sap might not agree, but this is actually a live ball. Presidents lead coalitions, and they have to understand where their coalition is and how things change over time. Peter Orszag this week suggested a trade-off: Give the Warren wing its choices on personnel, in exchange for more leeway to negotiate an infrastructure package with Republicans that gives big tax breaks to corporations with money stashed overseas. While that deal needs more detail, it reveals the power the Warren wing has, relative to the Obama era, to make significant strides on appointments.
Which side will win? The rank and file can actually have a voice in this, to make it known what personnel decisions would be acceptable or unacceptable. They can’t do it by ignoring evidence or sitting on their hands. The demand to only hold one thing in your head at a time—that Trump must be stopped—would squander this opportunity.

Last night, the David Horowitz Freedom Center brought its Stop the Jew Hatred on Campus poster campaign to San Francisco State University, a campus that is notorious for its glorification of anti-Israel terrorism and anti-Semitism.
San Francisco State University (SFSU) has repeatedly enabled the most extreme actions of its General Union of Palestinian Students (GUPS), a group closely resembling Students for Justice in Palestine, once led by SJP founder Hatem Bazian. This past April, GUPS disrupted a speech by the Mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, by shouting exhortations to terrorist violence and succeeded in curtailing his address. The demonstrators shouted “Intifada,” a call for terrorism against Israel, and chanted “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!” a call for the obliteration of the Jewish state. The former president of GUPS wrote dozens of social media posts threatening violence to pro-Israel students, Israelis, the IDF and others. He also praised Hamas and the violent Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
GUPS holds annual Israeli Apartheid Weeks which demonize Israel as an apartheid state and commemorate the founding of Israel as “al-Nakba” or “the catastrophe.” The faculty advisor for GUPS, Prof. Rabab Abdulhadi, met with terrorists Leila Khaled and Sheikh Raed Salah during a university-funded trip to the Middle East. (Khaled is a convicted hijacker and a member of the terrorist organization, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and Sheikh Raed Salah has been repeatedly jailed on charges of incitement to terrorist violence.) When questioned about the trip, San Francisco State administrators denied that Abdulhadi’s trip was an improper use of university funds. Abdulhadi also helped to broker a formal collaboration between SFSU and An-Najah National University in Palestine, which is known for its recruitment of students as cadre for Hamas and as suicide bombers.

No one knows this better than GOP candidate Donald Trump who has been abused and undermined by the commission’s corrupt practices and unfair policies in both debates so far. It is no coincidence that the commission itself is filled with Hillary Clinton supporters and anti-Trump Republicans.
First there was moderator Lester Holt’s prosecutor-style approach to interacting with Trump at the first debate, asking ideologically loaded questions that conformed to the Left’s agenda, cutting him off repeatedly, and arguing with him, while treating Democrat Hillary Clinton with kid gloves. In the second debate moderators Martha Raddatz and Anderson Cooper tag-teamed Trump with some success.
Trump attacked the commission during a Wednesday campaign rally in Ocala, Florida. His speech served as a desperately needed reminder that it is well past time to drive a stake through the heart of this powerful tool of the nation’s political establishment whose Washington, D.C. headquarters, quite appropriately, is mere blocks from K Street, the public thoroughfare synonymous with lobbying and the corruption that so often accompanies it.

Instead, she transmitted — in violation of government regulations — all of her official correspondences via a private email address that traced back to a secret, private, unsecured server that was housed at her New York residence.1 And immediately after those emails were subpoenaed by Congress, Clinton instructed a team of her advisers to unilaterally delete, with no oversight, almost 32,000 of the roughly 60,000 emails in question.2
Clinton claimed that her reason for having used only a personal email account, rather than both a personal and a government account, was that she found it “easier,” “better,” “simpler” and more convenient to “carry just one device for my work and for my personal emails instead of two.”3 It was eventually learned, however, that Mrs. Clinton in fact had used no fewer than 13 mobile devices to access emails on her private server, but the FBI was unable to obtain any of those devices in its investigation, in some cases because Clinton aides had been instructed to smash them with a hammer.4

Filner had impeccable credentials. His father was a Communist and he had been a Freedom Rider and a member of the Progressive Caucus. His ties to the Clintons went back a long way and he had passionately spoken out in defense of President Clinton during the impeachment debate.
He even had all the right left-wing “street” connections from J Street to Occupy Wall Street.
Planned Parenthood accused his Republican opponent of being part of the “War on Women” and claimed that, “For twenty years, Bob Filner has defended women… our right to choice, our right to healthcare, our right to equal pay.”
Bob Filner, like Bill Clinton, was also a serial sexual predator. His victims included a 67-year old grandmother and sexual assault victims who had come to him seeking help. He locked his executive assistant in the kitchen and demanded that they “make love.” His favorite move involved putting the women he targeted in a headlock.
Bill Clinton’s nickname was “Slick Willie.” Bob Filner’s was “Filthy Filner.” It wasn’t hard to see why Bill had backed Bob. Bill’s own idea of romance looked a lot like Bob’s. The stories told by Juanita Broaddrick, Kathleen Willey and Paula Jones, Bill’s accusers, bear a striking similarity to those of Bob’s accusers.

Off the coast of Yemen and at the UN Security Council we are seeing the strategic endgame of Barack Obama’s administration. And it isn’t pretty.
Since Sunday, Iran’s Houthi proxies in Yemen have attacked US naval craft three times in the Bab al-Mandab, the narrow straits at the mouth of the Red Sea. The Bab al-Mandab controls maritime traffic in the Red Sea, and ultimately controls the Suez Canal.
Whether the Iranians directed these assaults or simply green-lighted them is really beside the point. The point is that these are Iranian strikes on the US. The Houthis would never have exposed themselves to US military retaliation if they hadn’t been ordered to do so by their Iranian overlords.
The question is why has Iran chosen to open up an assault on the US? The simple answer is that Iran has challenged US power at the mouth of the Red Sea because it believes that doing so advances its strategic aims in the region.
Iran’s game is clear enough. It wishes to replace the US as the regional hegemon, at the US’s expense.
Since Obama entered office nearly eight years ago, Iran’s record in advancing its aims has been one of uninterrupted success.

Conservative columnist Katie Pavlich wrote an editorial titled, “Bernie Sanders and his leeches”.
It discussed Bernie’s own lifestyle sponging off taxpayers and the greed of his supporters who want to take money out of other people’s pockets to subsidize their lifestyle. In response the cynical supporters of the Sanders campaign began accusing her of anti-Semitism for using the word “leech”.
Now the Sanders campaign is, despite the ethnic background of its candidate, anti-Semitic. Just now Bernie Sanders got into trouble for standing up Jews in New York to pal around with Evo Morales, a friend of Ahmadinejad who had been blamed for escalating anti-Semitic violence against Jews.
When he was hit with a rant about “Zionist Jews” controlling Wall Street, Bernie Sanders responded by criticizing Israel. His campaign had no Jewish outreach and then appointed a rabid hater of Israel to handle Jewish Outreach until she had to resign over her past attacks on the Jewish state.
Bernie Sanders and his anti-Semitic campaign gave up the right to talk about anti-Semitism a while back. And the term leech is wholly and totally applicable to him.

An asylum seeker had his lips, ears and eyelids ripped off by another migrant before being stabbed in both eyes in a horrific attack at a German refugee centre.
The bloody assault happened in the town of Schlüchtern not far from Frankfurt in central Germany.
Police believe some of the victim’s facial features were bitten off and he was left blinded after being stabbed in both eyeballs.
A resident in the refugee accommodation heard loud screams from the home of the perpetrator and called police last Friday evening.
Officers broke down the door and seized a bloodstained 19-year-old who was sitting on his 18-year-old victim.
Jürgen Heinze, Hanau prosecutor, said the victim was also stabbed in the throat and the eyeballs. It remains unclear whether his sight can be saved.
The victim, a Somalian, was attacked by a man from Eritrea. The cause of the dispute is unclear although prosecutor did say some ‘ritualistic’ elements to the assault could not be ruled out.
The 18-year-old was taken to a specialist clinic. His life is not in danger but he remains in deep shock and unaware of his environment.
The attacker is being held on assault and attempted manslaughter charges which prosecutors say may be upgraded to attempted murder.
‘The investigating authorities have never experienced here before this form of violence. The victim was cruelly mutilated and must reckon with permanent damage. It is unclear whether the man permanently blinded,’ said a police spokesman.
Both men have homes in the same street but not in the same building.

Unprecedented: Hungary Opens Office for Persecuted Christians
Its “right wing” government appears to know something about Muslims and Christians that the West doesn’t.

The nation of Hungary recently did something that is as unprecedented as it is commonsensical and humanitarian: it “has become the first government to open an office specifically to address the persecution of Christians in the Middle East and Europe.”
Zoltan Balog, Hungary’s Minister for Human Resources, explained:
“Followers of radical religious ideologies” is of course code for Muslims—they who are responsible for the overwhelming majority of Christian persecution in the world.
This move comes “after Hungary’s right-wing prime minister, Victor Orban, drew criticism in the EU by saying Europe should focus on helping Christians before helping millions of Muslims coming into Europe.”
Orban explained: “If we really want to help, we should help where the real problem is.… We should first help the Christian people before Islamic people.”

A historical figure still worth celebrating
October 12 marked Christopher Columbus’s birthday. On Monday, October 10, the country commemorated the occasion.
However, formal observance should not be confused with celebration.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is impossible to escape: Everyone from across religious and political lines makes sure to let everyone else know that they’re doing something or other to honor the memory of King. In stark contrast, excepting some annual big city parades, those who are interested in ingratiating themselves to polite (politically correct) society, if they mention Columbus at all, will do so only in order to lament the fact that he’s been celebrated.
For a long time, Columbus Day was a big deal in this country. All of this began to change, however, once the left began seizing control of those of our institutions that function as centers of opinion-shaping. Courtesy of this fundamental transformation of the cultural landscape, the image of Columbus himself has been transformed from a hero of Western civilization to its archetypal villain.
Columbus symbolizes all that the left despises, a white, heterosexual, Catholic Christian man, an “imperialist” and “capitalist.” Russell Means, an American Indian activist, epitomizes this attitude when he says of Columbus that he makes Hitler look like “a juvenile delinquent.”
While it would be dishonest to characterize Columbus as a saint or deny that his discovery of those lands that would one day be referred to by the world as “the Americas” came at the cost of injustices, it is at least as dishonest to depict him as the villain that the left would have us believe he is.

Black Lives Matter Protest at Indiana U Turns Violent

A Black Lives Matter rally Monday at Indiana University resulted in property damage as student protesters became violent toward motorists while blocking traffic.
According to Campus Reform, the Black Student Union (BSU) and Students Against State Violence (SASV) student groups were protesting the Bloomington Police Department’s investigation into the death of Joseph Smedley, 20, a former IU student who went missing in October 2015 and whose body was later found nearby at Griffy Lake.
Both the Bloomington Police Department and the Indiana University campus police suspected no foul play and the coroner ruled Smedley’s death a suicide by drowning, but the protesting students felt that wasn’t good enough. At the rally they complained about the myth of institutionalized racism and police brutality in the black community.
SASV describes itself as “an anti-capitalist student group…building a movement against poverty and the systems that cause it: white supremacy, gender violence, deportation, militarism, policing, and the prison system” — you know, the usual suspects. The BSU states that its mission is “to improve quality of life for Black students” by “raising awareness of these interests through educational and social programs.” And through violent demonstrations, apparently.

“Swedish celebrity statistician Hans Rosling has criticized the UN and policy makers for using ‘fourfold inaccurate’ figures to make decisions on how to distribute aid money in a new, myth-busting article.
Rosling, who has given TED talks, became an unlikely global phenomenon in recent years and videos of his lectures have chalked up millions of views on Youtube.
His new piece, written with Karolinska University public health assistant professor Helena Nordenstedt for medical journal The Lancet, examined a claim that 60 percent of maternal deaths today come from “humanitarian situations like refugee camps”.
According to Rosling and Nordenstedt, the figure first gained prominence in aid advocacy in late 2015 when the UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) cited it, and it has since been quoted in a report by the UN’s Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescent’s Health, and even made its way into policy documents.
But after investigation, Rosling and Nordenstedt discovered that the stat, which originated in The Lancet, was based on poorly carried out calculations. According to the writers’ own calculations, it is a “fourfold” inaccuracy.
Nordenstedt told The Local that the continued use of the “60 percent” figure by major organizations could even be considered a lie.
“If it had been two times wrong you could perhaps call it carelessness, but the figure is at least four times too high, and I think that has crossed over into the boundaries of lies, regardless of whether it was negligent or deliberate,” she said.
“The effect is still the same: aid money designed to reduce maternal mortality is wrongly directed to refugee camps and crisis areas instead of the grey, boring, extreme rural poverty in areas in sub-Saharan Africa or in India.”
The article noted it is “surprising” that the inaccurate figure managed to make its way into a highly qualified panel at the UN, and warned that global health has entered a “post-fact era”, “where the labeling of numerators is incorrectly tweaked for advocacy purposes”.
Nordenstedt reiterated that sentiment in her comments to The Local:
“The strange, scary thing is how the figures, just by slipping into The Lancet and being given credibility, then spread and spread because it suits the narrative we see much of today in newspapers around the refugee crisis and migration, and the hope is that through connecting maternal mortality to humanitarian crises it can attract more money.”
Rosling and Nordenstedt’s article concluded that the use of inaccurate numbers in global health advocacy “can misguide where investments are most needed”, and on Friday, the Karolinska assistant professor advised that more fact checking is needed in the area:
“This example shows that there is a need for fact checking within global health to guide the right prioritization. A lot of aid money is going around, and to achieve the best result (in this instance to reduce maternal mortality as effectively as possible) that aid money must be distributed correctly.””

German television comic Jan Böhmermann’s poem, which he read on public ZDF television, described the Turkish leader as “stupid, cowardly and uptight” and contained crude sexual references.
Böhmermann said the piece was a reaction to Ankara’s decision to summon Germany’s ambassadorover another satirical song broadcast on German TV, which lampooned Erdogan in far tamer language.
A litmus test for free speech
There was widespread reaction in April to the decision by Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government to grant a Turkish request to invoke a 19th century law allowing prosecution of Böhmermann for insulting a foreign head of state. She later expressed regretand said her government planned to repeal the law criminalizing insults of a foreign leaders, although not for the German president.
The German Association of Journalists (DJV) had criticized Erdogan’s decision to file a further complaint. “The Turkish president is not only an active enemy of press freedom, but also a bad loser,” DJV head Frank Überall said.
The episode has had an effect on German-Turkish relations as the two countries seek to negotiate over the refugee crisis and Turkey’s stalled accession talks into the European Union.”

The strikes mark the first time the U.S has engaged in the Yemeni civil war since Saudi Arabia intervened to dislodge the Houthis from large swaths of the country in early 2015. The two regional powers have extended their influence across the Middle East in hopes of tipping the balance of power in their favor. The Syrian conflict has commanded the most attention between the two rivals as Saudi Arabia continues to fund opposition groups hoping to overthrow the Assad regime.
Likewise, Iran has devoted considerable resources to Shia militia groups in Syria and Iraq. Recently, Foreign Affairs magazine noted in an article that Afghanistan may become the next major battleground between Iran and Saudi proxies. As Iran gains greater influence in Yemen through the Houthis, the Saudis may consider provoking greater instability in Iran’s backyard.
The U.S military’s engagement makes it unclear how relations with Saudi Arabia stand. The U.S – Saudi partnership has suffered since the P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran guaranteed an easing of sanctions in exchange for a dismantling of significant portions of Iran’s nuclear program. Critics of the deal, led by Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states, argue Iran will use newly available funds to destabilize the region by supporting its proxies.
Iran has sustained the Assad regime in Syria, as well as given substantial funds and weaponry to Hezbollah, Iraqi militias and, increasingly so, Yemeni Houthis. It is unclear whether further U.S involvement in the conflict will push the two allies towards greater cooperation against Iran or not.
Meanwhile, the U.S is suffering from rising anti-Americanism in the region and criticism for its support of the Saudi-led air campaign. Just last week, an air raid resulted in the death of 140 civilians gathered at a funeral in the Yemeni capital of Sana’a, which has been under Houthi control since 2014. Observers attributed the strikes to coalition forces; an accusation they have flatly denied.
Recognizing the limits of international and domestic support for the Saudi campaign, the Obama administration has begun reviewing U.S support for the coalition.”
