  2. Didn’t I say months ago that Hillary’s health was going to break down and she was going to leave the campaign early? Behold, Carnac the Magnificent. She’s gotta know she’s going to get clobbered and the pressure of the constant suspicion from the FBI would be enough to turn anybody into Jello – especially when they know they’re darn well guilty. Just the fact that her IT guy had no clearance sounds like a pretty serious infraction to me. What’s to stop him being a foreign agent? And the Clinton foundation? I’m pretty sure Hillary spends a lot of off-camera time vomiting in the sink and swallowing tranquilizers. That would definitely be me if I had that kind of pressure on my head twenty-four-hours-a-day. You can’t live long with the fight-or-flight switch always in the “on” position, flashing red… Out, out, damn spot!

    • North Korea ramps up uranium enrichment, enough for six nuclear bombs a year

      SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea will have enough material for about 20 nuclear bombs by the end of this year, with ramped-up uranium enrichment facilities and an existing stockpile of plutonium, according to new assessments by weapons experts.

      The North has evaded a decade of U.N. sanctions to develop the uranium enrichment process, enabling it to run an effectively self-sufficient nuclear program that is capable of producing around six nuclear bombs a year, they said.

      The true nuclear capability of the isolated and secretive state is impossible to verify. But after Pyongyang conducted its fifth and most powerful nuclear test last week and, according to South Korea, was preparing for another, it appears to have no shortage of material to test with.

      North Korea has an abundance of uranium reserves and has been working covertly for well over a decade on a project to enrich the material to weapons-grade level, the experts say.

      That project, believed to have been expanded significantly, is likely the source of up to 150 kilograms (330 pounds) of highly enriched uranium a year, said Siegfried Hecker, a leading expert on the North’s nuclear program.

    World leaders need to better manage the frustration over the failure of globalization to deliver widely shared benefits, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said.

    While the world has enjoyed unprecedented economic progress over the last 70 years, the transformation has caused “dislocation and hardship,” Lagarde said in the text of a speech to be delivered Tuesday in Toronto.

    “Growing inequality in wealth, income, and opportunity in many countries has added to a groundswell of discontent, especially in the industrialized world — a growing sense among some citizens that they ‘lack control,’ that the system is somehow against them,” Lagarde said.

    History has shown that closing borders and increasing protectionism isn’t the solution, she said. Instead, countries need to extend the benefits of openness and integration, while alleviating the side effects, Lagarde said. “We need to make globalization work for all.”

  12. Hungry startup uses robots to grab slice of pizza

    If you ordered it from Silicon Valley’s Zume Pizza, the answer is yes.

    The startup, which began delivery in April, is using intelligent machines to grab a slice of the multibillion-dollar pizza delivery market.

    Zume is one of a growing number of food-tech firms seeking to disrupt the restaurant industry with software and robots.

    “We’re going to eliminate boring, repetitive, dangerous jobs, and we’re going to free up people to do things that are higher value,” said co-founder Alex Garden, a former Microsoft manager and president of mobile game maker Zynga Studios.

    Inside its commercial kitchen in Mountain View, pizza dough travels down a conveyer belt where machines add the sauce, spread it and later carefully slide the uncooked pies into an 800-degree oven.

    The startup will soon add robots to prep the dough, add cheese and toppings, take pizzas out of the oven, cut them into slices and box them for delivery.

  13. Oliver Stone: DNC Hack Was ‘Inside Job,’ Not Russia

    During an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Tuesday, director Oliver Stone accused the Democratic National Committee of hacking itself. Asked by the host what he makes of the reports that Russian hackers breached the DNC’s email server and fed information to WikiLeaks in an attempt to influence the U.S. presidential election, Stone called that idea a “great fiction.” The director, currently promoting his biopic of Edward Snowden, said the intelligence experts he has spoken with indicated that the DNC hack was “probably an inside job.” He went on to specify that he believed the hack was perpetrated by Democrats within the committee. The revelations from the hack led directly to the resignation of DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz and other high-level officials.

  14. Top diplomats from U.S., Japan, South Korea to meet on North Korea

    SEOUL/BEIJING (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will meet with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts in New York on Sunday to discuss responses to North Korea’s latest nuclear test, South Korea’s foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

    The three countries are pushing for tough new U.N. Security Council sanctions on North Korea after the isolated country on Friday conducted its fifth and largest nuclear test.

    The blast was in defiance of U.N. sanctions that were tightened in March.

    China, the North’s chief ally, backed the March resolution but is more resistant to harsh new sanctions this time after the United States and South Korea decided to deploy a sophisticated anti-missile system in the South, which China adamantly opposes.

    South Korea said Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and his counterparts Kerry and Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida will meet during the annual U.N. General Assembly to discuss putting further pressure on North Korea.

    The United States wants China to do more, with U.S. Defence Secretary Ash Carter last week singling out the role he said China should play in curbing its neighbor.

    This is becoming a pattern in the most transparent administration in the history of the galaxy. First it was Lois Lerner, who made a statement before Congress, thereby waiving her Fifth Amendment Rights, but then claimed them anyway — and somehow waltzed of unscathed.

    Today it was employees of Platte River Networks, the Denver-based IT firm that maintained Hillary Clinton’s homebrew server.

    The Associated Press notes that two “officials” with the company, Bill Thornton and Paul Combetta, pled the Fifth and were excused from before a House committee investigating Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server. Combetta is the one who wiped Hillary Clinton’s private server and email archive with BleachBit.

    Bryan Pagliano, the former State Department computer specialist tasked with setting up Clinton’s server, has also asserted his constitutional right not to testify and did not appear at today’s session

  16. Obama administration wipes out educational alternatives and increases tuition costs

    The federal government happily subsidizes awful state colleges that graduate few if any of their students. That includes Chicago State University, which has just a 12.8% six-year graduation rate. The Obama administration has rewritten federal student loan rules in a way that encourages colleges to raise tuition and effectively subsidizes the worst colleges the most. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York found that each additional dollar in government financial aid results in a tuition hike of about 65 cents. The federal government also subsidizes expensive, low-quality third-tier law schools whose graduates are often unemployed. It does so even though many of their graduates will never pay back their student loans because of their low graduating salaries, and the huge amount of money law students are allowed to borrow from the government.

    But while the government is indulgent toward wasteful state colleges, it has a very different, hostile attitude toward for-profit colleges. It will sometimes financially destroy them even without any proof of wrongdoing. The Washington Post editorial board gives the latest example of the Obama administration doing this, its destruction of ITT Technical Institutes:

      • Letting the parents use vouchers to get their kids a decent education would prevent most of them from turning to gangs and crime and would let them learn enough to make up their own minds about who to vote for. The idea that they might not vote for the Dems scares the left.

    • Chicago State University is a mostly Black college whose purpose some contend is to provide Bachelors degrees so they can get government jobs. People have been heard on the CTA stating it’s easier than high school. They do provide Doctorate Degrees in Education, which is the area of study most Black Phds are granted.

    How many times must the left tell Americans what it thinks of them before Americans realize a simple fact: Leftist leaders simply don’t like half the country? In 2012, the media lost its mind over former Gov. Mitt Romney’s statement that 47 percent of Americans “who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them” would vote for President Obama. This apparently demonstrated that Romney hates everyday Americans. Disdains them. Sees them as moochers.

    In 2008, then-Sen. Barack Obama claimed that small-town Americans in the Midwest are benighted hicks. “It’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations,” he said. This received attention from the conservative press, but was downplayed by the mainstream media, or brushed off as accurate.

    This weekend, Hillary Clinton echoed Obama. She said: “To just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that.” The other half of Trump supporters, Clinton said, are little better: “But that other basket of people are people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they’re just desperate for change. … Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well.”

  25. Stop Big Government, Seek Bigger Growth

    Seventeen years ago, near the close of the 20th century, the typical American household had a higher income than it did in 2015.

    The Census Bureau’s annual report on income and poverty in the United States, released this week, did not focus on that fact. But it did note that real median household income was higher in 2015 than in 2014.

    “Median household income was $56,516 in 2015, an increase in real terms of 5.2 percent from the 2014 median of $53,718,” the report said in its “Highlights” section.

    “This is the first annual increase in median household income since 2007, the year before the most recent recession,” the report said.

    In 2007 — nine years ago — real median household income (in constant 2015 dollars) was $57,423, according to Table A-1 in the report. America has not gotten back there yet.

    In the nearly five decades between 1967 and 2015, according to that table, real median household income peaked in 1999 at $57,909. It has never been that high in the 21st century.

    But the Census Bureau data also shows — as it has shown in the past — that some types of households tend to have higher incomes than others.

    To modern American liberals, this would be evidence of a class war, where rich and evil people exploit the poor.

    But the Census Bureau’s Table FINC-01, which shows median household income by “characteristics of families,” demonstrates something else.

    A recent event I attended on Capitol Hill opened my eyes.

    It was hosted by the Endowment for Middle East Truth and the subject was “Exposing BDS: The Movement That Seeks to Destroy Israel.”

    BDS stands for Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions. It is a movement trying to conduct economic warfare against the state of Israel by encouraging, through these actions, severing global economic relations with the Jewish state.

    Among the many miracles surrounding the re-birth of the state of Israel 68 years ago is the economic growth that has occurred there. From swamps and desert, Israelis created a modern country with per capital income on par with modern Western industrialized nations. Several years ago, Israel was welcomed as a member of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development. Its membership consists of 35 nations with the world’s most advanced economies.

    You would think those trying to get ahead, who claim to want to make this a better world, would be interested in trying to understand and emulate how this miracle happened. Instead, Israel’s detractors see success and want to destroy it.

    My friend George Gilder wrote a book several years ago called “The Israel Test.” How does he define the Israel test?

    “What is your attitude toward people who surpass you in the creation of wealth and other accomplishments? Do you aspire to equal their excellence, or does it make you seethe? Do you admire and celebrate extraordinary achievement, or do you impugn it and seek to tear it down?”

  27. Gaza-bound flotilla set to sail off from Barcelona

    International activists on two boats carrying food and medicine aim to break Israeli siege on Palestinian territory.

    A new flotilla of international activists is due to leave for the Gaza Strip from the Spanish city of Barcelona, hoping to break a nearly decade-long Israeli blockade.

    Two sailing boats, Amal and Zaytouna, with 11 women on board each, will sail off on Wednesday evening under the banner “The Women’s Boat to Gaza”.

    The passengers, including Swedish European Parliament member Malin Bjork and Dr Fouzia Hassan of Malaysia, aim to reach Gaza by early October.

    “We are carrying food and medicine on the boat that will be distributed to Gazans upon arrival,” Zohar Chamberlain Regev, a spokeswoman of the initiative, told Al Jazeera.

    “But mainly we are carrying a message of hope and solidarity, because we think Gazans want that most of all.”

  28. US Welcomes 11,491 Syrians, But Where Are the Christians?
    Only 0.46% of the Syrian refugees allowed into the US over the last year are Christian despite the US agreeing they are suffering a genocide.

    The United States is already 15% over its target of allowing 10,000 Syrian refugees into the country for the fiscal year 2016. There are still three weeks left to go and, as of the beginning of the week, 11,491 Syrians have been resettled in America.

    However, of those allowed in, just 58 are Christians, amounting to 0.46%.

    They are:

    14 Catholics
    6 Orthodox
    4 Protestants
    1 Greek Orthodox
    29 undefined
    4 Jehovah’s Witnesses

    This is a shockingly low number, especially given the persecution faced by Christians across the Middle East and North Africa. The Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) and other jihadist groups deliberately target Christians forcing them to pay the jizya (a subjugation tax), convert to Islam or die.

    In March, the U.S. State Department declared that the campaign of ISIS against the Christians constitutes genocide.

    Yet 98% of those allowed into the country were Sunni Muslims.

    The Yazidis, who have also faced a concerted campaign to eradicate them by the Islamic State, have also not been allowed entry en masse into the United States. Only 18 Yazidis have been allowed in this year.

  29. GERMANY – Cologne authorities plan secure zone this New Year’s Eve

    BERLIN (AP) — Cologne authorities say they’re planning to fence off a large area around the city’s famous cathedral this New Year’s Eve as part of stepped-up security precautions aimed at preventing a repeat of last year’s attacks.

    Mayor Henriette Reker said Wednesday that entry into the secure zone would only be through checkpoints, and no fireworks would be allowed, the dpa news agency reported.

    In addition, police chief Juergen Mathies said there would be a strongly increased police presence both in the secure area and elsewhere in downtown Cologne.

    It was outside the cathedral and by the nearby train station that most of the string of robberies and sexual assaults occurred last New Year’s, blamed largely on foreign men.

    That sparked a debate about immigration in Germany.

  31. Marine Drill Sergeant Put Muslim Recruit in Tumble Dryer
    The sergeant reportedly screamed at the recruit, “You’re going to kill us all the first chance you get aren’t you, terrorist?”

    A Muslim recruit to the U.S. Marine corps was forced into an industrial tumble dryer and subjected to anti-Muslim abuse by a drill sergeant, according to an investigation into abuse at the Parris Island training facility in South Carolina.

    The sergeant is said to have screamed, “You’re going to kill us all the first chance you get aren’t you, terrorist” and accused him of participating in the 9/11 attacks. He also alleged shouted, “What are your plans? Aren’t you a terrorist?”

    The sergeant reportedly turned on the dryer, burning the recruit’s neck and arms.

    Although the alleged incident took place in November 2015, it has only now come to light, with the Washington Post reviewing the investigative documents.

    The same sergeant was also implicated in the death of another recruit, Raheel Siddiqui, who had Pakistani origins. Siddiqui leapt 40 feet to his death from a stairwell while running from the sergeant who had just slapped him.

    Such actions are clearly cases of anti-Muslim bigotry. It is important that the Marine Corps has opened an investigation into the incident as well as other allegations of bullying, hazing and abuse which allegedly took place in the 3rd Recruit Training Battalion at the Parris Island training facility.

  33. European Leaders Discuss Plan for European Army
    “We are going to move towards an EU army much faster than people believe.”

    European leaders are discussing “far-reaching proposals” to build a pan-European military, according to a French defense ministry document leaked to the German newspaper, the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

    The efforts are part of plans to relaunch the European Union at celebrations in Rome next March marking the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, which established the European Community.

    The document confirms rumors that European officials are rushing ahead with defense integration now that Britain — the leading military power in Europe — will be exiting the 28-member European Union.

    British leaders have repeatedly blocked efforts to create a European army because of concerns that it would undermine the NATO alliance, the primary defense structure in Europe since 1949.

    Proponents of European defense integration argue that it is needed to counter growing security threats and would save billions of euros in duplication between countries.

    Critics say that the creation of a European army, a long-held goal (see Appendix below) of European federalists, would entail an unprecedented transfer of sovereignty from European nation states to unelected bureaucrats in Brussels, the de facto capital of the EU.

    Others say that efforts to move forward on European defense integration show that European leaders have learned little from Brexit — the June 23 decision by British voters to leave the EU — and are determined to continue their quest to build a European superstate regardless of opposition from large segments of the European public.

    But her view was obstructed by a box of tissues on the dashboard and the woman crashed into the little girl without seeing her.

    Shockingly, Aden believed she had hit a trolley and continued driving over the girl for some time.
    Aden initially denied causing death by careless driving but was found guilty last month following a four-day trial.

    Today, she was sentenced to 14 months in jail, suspended for two years, after the court heard she had ill heath and has to care for her sick mother.

    As the sentence was delivered, Fahima’s mother Narmin Nur, of Kingsbury, north west London, ran out of the courtroom.

    Speaking outside court, the 31-year-old – who also referred to her daughter as Yaya – said: ‘We are not happy with the sentence. How can this be justice? We are so sad.

    ‘How can someone kill a child and still walk free? I can’t believe it. I know no sentence can bring Yaya back, but we thought she might get some prison time…”

    “Two 15-year-old boys reportedly intending to carry out terror attacks have been arrested in Paris.

    The first teen was arrested in the 20th arrondissement of Paris on Wednesday morning, sources close to the investigation told the BFM TV channel.

    A search was being carried out at the boy’s home following his arrest, reports say. It is believed he was not previously known to police or intelligence services.

    The boy had allegedly offered to carry out a terror attack and had been in touch with Rashid Kassim, a French jihadist who has been linked to several other recent attacks in France.

    Details of what kind of attack had been planned and where have not yet been made public, but BFM TV claims the youngster had tried to get hold of a weapon to use in his attack.

    It was revealed on Wednesday afternoon that yet another 15-year-old boy had been arrested due to terror links.

    This time, the teen was arrested on Thursday afternoon in Rueil-Malmaison, in the western suburbs of Paris. He had also been linked to Kassim via the Telegram app.

    Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said on Wednesday that the intelligence services were “working harder than ever” to prevent assaults incited by “a number of characters in Syria who used encrypted methods to call on young people to carry out attacks.”…”

    “Hans-Georg Maassen, the head of Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, has said terrorists are given orders through social networks. He has warned against a new kind of “hybrid warfare.”

    After the arrest of three Syrian terror suspects residing in northern German refugee shelters, Hans-Georg Maassen has sounded the alarm. “We are concerned about the new type of perpetrator who seems to be acting alone,” the head of Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), told journalists in Berlin on Wednesday.

    Maassen said these potential attackers are presumably given orders by foreign terror leaders through encrypted instant messaging services. “This scenario is especially challenging for security authorities – as is the uncovering of sleeper cells,” he stressed.

    The three arrested on Tuesday may be members of a sleeper cell that waits for instructions from the so-called “Islamic State” (IS). Two of them, Ibrahim M., 18, and Mohamed A., 26, were brought before judges of Germany’s Federal Court of Justice (BGH) after a hearing on Wednesday.

    The third suspect has already been brought before BGH investigators. Authorities believe that IS sent the trio to Germany to “either to carry out orders or to prepare for further instructions.”
    Security officials count 9,200 Salafists

    Maassen said their case is an example of “hybrid warfare.” Attacks are ordered through social networks like Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram, where “perpetrators themselves are safe and not recognized.”

    Security officials assume that the Internet is a central platform for radicalization, recruitment, communication and the management of potential attackers. This also applies to the marketing of attacks in video messages, for example. The virtual repertoire includes instruction manuals and a means of arranging contacts. Security officials consider the rapidly growing Salafist scene in Germany to be particularly susceptible to recruiters. According to the BfV, the number of Salafists in Germany has risen from 8,900 to 9,200 since the end of June.

    BfV refugee guide

    In order to effectively respond to the dangerous situation, police officials, the BfV and Germany’s foreign intelligence agency, the BND, must be massively upgraded and equipped with new technology and personnel. Maassen has previously brought attention to the precarious situation. So-called returnees who temporarily joined IS in Syria and Iraq must also be seen as dangerous.

    Terror groups are trying to attract new recruits from among the many refugees who have recently arrived in Germany. In order to better recognize the ensuing risks, the BfV has developed a guide whose title can be translated into English as “How do I recognize extremist and intelligence activities?” The guide says one can categorically assume that members or sympathizers of “extremist or terrorist organizations” can be found among refugees. At the moment, the arrest of the three suspects on Tuesday seems to confirm this theory.”

    “The German government has approved a financial package aimed at helping states and local authorities shoulder costs associated with refugees. The move comes after clashes between state officials and the Berlin cabinet.

    The federal government on Wednesday passed a draft law that includes a pledge to pay for accommodation of people with official refugee status.

    “We are starting measures that will amount to some 20 billion euros ($22.5 billion) by 2019,” German Economy Minister Wolfgang Schäuble said.

    This package will see Berlin provide Germany’s 16 states with a total of 2 billion euros per year for the next three years. The states are given free reign on how to spend the funds, as long as the money goes to helping refugees integrate into society.

    In addition, the federal government will pay another billion to help build new housing.
    Between 2016 and 2018, Berlin will also take over all living expenses for newcomers with confirmed refugee status. These expenses, such as rent and heating, have previously been delegated to municipal levels.

    Many local and state officials have slammed Berlin for calling on the lower levels of government deal with the financial burden. The federal government currently contributes 670 euros per asylum-seeker per month while states process a person’s application for asylum.

    With the critics growing louder, Chancellor Angela Merkel and Schäuble managed to reach the deal with state premiers earlier this summer. The document Schäuble presented on Wednesday is a result of those discussions.

    In another attempt to ease the burden on local authorities, the federal government has pledged to waive parts of revenue tax income, starting in 2018. Also, the federal budget will pay more for accommodation and heating for state welfare recipients, which could go to Germans and foreigners alike.

    The government’s bill needs to be passed by parliament before going into effect.”

      “Beneath the sheen of startups and hipsters, Berlin is a troubled city. Are politicians to blame or does it still need more time to recover from the Cold War?

      In the week leading up to state elections in Berlin, the capital was garlanded with yet another trendy accolade, being named the ‘second most liveable city in the world’ by New York-based Metropolis magazine.

      But points won for up-cycling disused breweries into working spaces for techies and “creatives” suggest the magazine didn’t have your average Berliner in mind when it cooked up its rankings.

      Berlin’s reputation in Germany – where one national newspaper dubbed it “the failed city” – is less glamorous.

      Pick out some of the more startling recent headlines – almost half of all single parents live in poverty, one in ten working-age adults has no job, the city is saddled with almost €60 million in public debt – and it becomes clear why.

      ‘Capital of child poverty’

      “It’s not acceptable that we remain the capital of child poverty and long-term unemployment any longer,” Bettina Jarasch, the Green Party’s leader in Berlin told The Local.

      The fact that so many single parents are living in poverty is “shameful”, she said.

      For Jarasch, blame clearly falls with the Social Democrats (SPD), who have ruled the city as the largest party in three coalitions since 2001.

      “A party that has been in power for decades can’t say that it has nothing to do with the city’s problems.”

      “Fifteen years ago the SPD decided to cut costs massively. That wasn’t the wrong decision at the time, but they decided way too late to change course and start re-investing.”

      Klaus Lederer, leader of Die Linke (Left Party) in Berlin agrees that austerity has taken an unnecessary toll on social projects.

      “There is so much that the [Berlin] Senate hasn’t done in the last five years. It should have been investing in schools, social infrastructure and in housing rather than trying to reduce debt,” he said in comments emailed to The Local.

      Down south in Munich – the proud conservative powerhouse of the German economy – an expert also told us that the SPD has shirked its duties in Berlin.

      Dr. Gerhard Hirscher, a political researcher at the conservative Hanns Seidel Foundation tells The Local that Berlin has continued to receive money from other parts of the country.

      “If you’ve been the ruling party for such a long time, you’ve got responsibility. Of course Berlin had financial burdens following reunification, but it also profited from Germany’s state fiscal equalisation scheme.”

      The state fiscal equalisation scheme compensates for financial inequality between states, and in 2015 Berlin was the largest recipient, taking €3.6 billion from wealthier parts of the country.

      Hirscher also argues that becoming the German capital (Berlin fully took over from Bonn in 1999) has created the tax base for a wealthy government.

      “In the past few years, companies, ministries and organizational offices have been moved to Berlin. These are well-paid jobs and the people who do them live in Berlin and pay taxes there. That has a positive economic effect.”

      Condemned by history

      But the SPD and their supporters argue that only talking about the city’s current problems makes light of the deep scars left by a half century of war and division – with the city first bombed to the floor in 1945 and then forcefully divided throughout the Cold War.

      “The main cause of poverty in Berlin is structural,” argued Dr. Bernhard Weßels, a research fellow at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB).

      “Before reunification, [West] Berlin received a support subsidy. When that was abolished Berlin lost eight percent of its income – that’s a huge amount,” Weßels said.

      “A further problem was the de-industrialization in the East. When the Soviet Union collapsed, much of the industry they had established in East Berlin collapsed. That resulted in a high level of joblessness that came overnight.”

      A result is that Berlin remained unattractive for the type of people who have money: the middle-aged and the middle class.

      “One problem is demographics. We have a lot of old and young people here – neither of these two groups has money.”

      But the situation has slowly been improving under the SPD despite these problems, Weßels says.

      “Will Berlin ever be a rich though? That is an open question, as it relies heavily on its public sector. In Munich, on the other hand, you have a rich middle class and lots of small- and medium-sized entrepreneurs. Those are the ones who bring in the money.”

      Turning a corner?

      That things are finally starting to look up is a point of view the SPD are also eager to emphasize.

      “This year, for the third year running, Berlin’s economy has grown more than the German economy overall,” SPD-Berlin’s regional manager Dennis Buchner told the Local.

      The capital’s debt has dropped below €60 billion for the first time since 2009, with over €3 billion of old debts being paid back in this electoral term alone, he said.

      “In recent years, we have used half of our budget surplus for debt repayment. We’ve used the other half to invest in the growing city.”

      He also argues that one shouldn’t just look at the high unemployment rate in the city, but see where it has come from.

      “The number of people in employment has been increasing faster than the national average for years, so having had relatively high unemployment levels, Berlin’s unemployment is gradually decreasing. That is also a success of the SPD policies in recent years,” he says.

      Moreover, “55,000 jobs have been created over the past year. Every year we build infrastructure for 40,000 new Berliners,” Berlin’s current mayor Michael Müller (SPD) also emphasized in a recent interview with Die Welt.

      What do Berliners think?

      If polling in the build up to Sunday’s election is to believed, the Berlin public is starting to fall out of love with the Social Democrats – although as this follows a nationwide pattern, national issues like the refugee crisis likely also play a role.

      While the SPD won over 28 percent of the vote in the last election in 2011, a poll by broadcaster ARD last week put them at 21 percent, their lowest popularity in a decade.

      Nonetheless, they should still scrape through as the largest single party. In a very tight race, Angela Merkel’s conservative CDU are polling in second with 19 percent, while the Greens are on 16 percent and Die Linke and the far-right AfD are both on 15 percent.

      That would mean, though, a significant loss in power for the SPD, who would have to build a coalition with two other parties in order to achieve a majority.”

    A local militia had planned an armed protest to stop a proposed Muslim cemetery and mosque, said the Coalition for American-Islamic Relations.

    “We strongly condemn the anti-Muslim extremists who have slandered, harassed and threatened Newton County’s commissioners over the past week,” said CAIR-GA Executive Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell in the news release. “These cowardly bigots do not represent the people of Newton County, who are as warm and welcoming as other Georgians.”

    Town official canceled the meeting because of safety concerns.

    The armed militia group, called Georgia Security Force 111%, made a video which was posted over the weekend protesting the presence of Muslims in the county and standing on the proposed site of the cemetery and mosque.

    The militia group’s website says, “we love our country, our freedom, and our liberty and we will always have the right to defend it.”

    The local sheriff’s department has opened an investigation into the group.

    CAIR has been active in Georgia over the past month in reaching out to conservatives and tea-party affiliated groups.

    The largest civil right organization representing Muslim is providing an “Islam 101” presentation, according to a press release in The Daily Caller.

    “We’re willing to answer any and all questions about Islam and American Muslims, whether those questions are tame or critical,” said the press release.”

Juncker would also like to double the investment plan for growth and employment, which generated 150 billion euros last year.

      HARDLINE Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has ruffled more EU feathers by declaring Europe’s future will be decided on the Bulgarian-Turkish border rather than the debating chambers of Brussels.

      Mr Orban called for more funding for member states hit hardest by the migrant crisis and poured scorn on EU refugee policy which he he dismissed as naive.

      He said: ”If someone illegally cross the border, they need to be sent back.”

      He was speaking after joining Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov for a tour of the area where a fence was erected near the town of Lesovo.

      Mr Orban has been heavily criticised in Brussels for his hardline stance on refugees with some European leaders calling for his country booted out of the EU.

      In his latest comments on the migrant crisis, he said: ”Everybody should understand that Europe’s future won’t be decided in Brussels, but here, at the Bulgarian-Turkish border.

      “Bulgaria should receive more support, it’s unfair to leave it on its own, as it’s protecting us, not only itself.

      “We should support Bulgaria with €160million so they will have the funds to protect their borders from the migrants.”

      “We should protect our borders in union and we will need to get the Greek government to follow the same logic.

      “Europe’s biggest problem at the moment is naivety. Brussels migration policy is based on naivety and that’s why we are in huge trouble today.”

      His remarks tend not to go down well in Brussels and recently Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn suggested revoking Hungary’s EU membership.

      Mr Asselborn said: “Anyone who builds fences against refugees from war like Hungary does, or who violates press freedom and judicial independence, should be excluded temporarily or, if necessary, forever from the EU.

      “It is the only way to preserve the cohesion and values of the EU.”

      But Germany’s European Parliament President Martin Schulz has called for calm and suggested Mr Orban was playing to the crowd.

      Mr Shulz said: “He is the master of provocation. The other day he called European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and other politicians, including Liberal MEP Guy Verhofstadt, a nihilist and who knows what else.

      “Jean Asselborn reacted to this when he talked about revoking Hungary’s EU membership and while this response is understandable emotionally, how do we want to expel Hungary when we don’t even know how the Brits should leave the EU?

      “This whole thing is pure nonsense.”

      Mr Schulz said he would meet Mr Orban on Friday and tell him “throwing insults back and forth makes no sense” because people want politicians to solve the problems rather than to provoke each other.

    “Turkey on Wednesday blasted the United States’ top diplomat in Ankara after the American embassy expressed concern over the ousting of two dozen mayors over suspected links to Kurdish rebels.

    In a statement on Sunday, the US embassy in Ankara raised concerns over clashes in the southeast between protesters and police after 28 mayors were suspended mainly for suspected ties with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

    The embassy called for early local elections to replace the ousted mayors, who had been elected in 2014 polls, “in accordance with Turkish law.”

    The statement “is unacceptable, in particular for independent countries,” Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said, attributing the comments to US ambassador John Bass.

    Soylu said “the way he (the ambassador) spoke, like he was trying to provoke us… has upset us.” He said the US administration should warn the ambassador.

    “That’s what we expect because it is not the right approach,” he said. “It is a test of sincerity. It is unacceptable.”

    Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu also conveyed Turkey’s “concerns” over the embassy statement during a phone conversation with US Secretary of State John Kerry late Tuesday, foreign ministry sources said…”
