North Korea fires three ballistic missiles as G20 leaders meet in China
North Korea fired three ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast on Monday, South Korea’s military said, as the leaders of the Group of 20 major economies held a summit in China, the North’s main diplomatic ally.
The missiles were fired from a region south of the capital Pyongyang just after noon local time (0300 GMT) and flew about 1,000 km (600 miles), hitting Japan’s air defense identification zone, the South’s Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
“We are still analyzing details but this is a grave threat to our nation’s security, and we express deep concern,” the Japan Defence Ministry said in a statement.
The missile launches were the latest in a series of launches by the isolated North this year in violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions, supported by China, that ban all ballistic missile-related activities by the North.
Pyongyang rejects the ban as infringing its sovereign right to pursue a space program and self defense.

Intelligence community investigating covert Russian influence operations in the United States
U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies are probing what they see as a broad covert Russian operation in the United States to sow public distrust in the upcoming presidential election and in U.S. political institutions, intelligence and congressional officials said.
The aim is to understand the scope and intent of the Russian campaign, which incorporates cyber-tools to hack systems used in the political process, enhancing Russia’s ability to spread disinformation.
The effort to better understand Russia’s covert influence operations is being spearheaded by James R. Clapper Jr., the director of national intelligence. “This is something of concern for the DNI,” said Charles Allen, a former longtime CIA officer who has been briefed on some of these issues. “It is being addressed.”
A Russian influence operation in the United States “is something we’re looking very closely at,” said one senior intelligence official who, as others interviewed, spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter. Officials are also examining potential disruptions to the election process, and the FBI has alerted state and local officials to potential cyberthreats.

I just heard a former Reagan advisor say that Russia is doing the hacking to play mind games with the US. I will agree with you on that what is being told is very important no matter who hacked or leaked the info, and you know I have said all along that Putin leaking the info doesn’t make sense. China blames United States, journalists for Obama airport fiasco
China on Monday leveled responsibility at the United States and journalists for a fracas at a Chinese airport, in which officials of both countries exchanged heated remarks as President Barack Obama disembarked from his aircraft.

Oil pipeline protest turns violent in southern North Dakota
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A protest of a four-state, $3.8 billion oil pipeline turned violent after tribal officials say construction crews destroyed American Indian burial and cultural sites on private land in southern North Dakota.
Morton County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Donnell Preskey said four private security guards and two guard dogs were injured after several hundred protesters confronted construction crews Saturday afternoon at the Dakota Access pipeline construction site just outside the Standing Rock Sioux reservation. One of the security officers was taken to a Bismarck hospital for undisclosed injuries. The two guard dogs were taken to a Bismarck veterinary clinic, Preskey said.
Tribe spokesman Steve Sitting Bear said protesters reported that six people had been bitten by security dogs, including a young child. At least 30 people were pepper-sprayed, he said. Preskey said law enforcement authorities had no reports of protesters being injured.

Iran’s Khamenei blasts Saudi management of holy sites
Tehran (AFP) – With Iranians blocked from this month’s hajj pilgrimage, their supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a furious rebuke to rival Saudi Arabia, saying the Muslim world should challenge its management of Islam’s holiest sites.
“Saudi rulers… who have blocked the proud and faithful Iranian pilgrims’ path to the Beloved’s House, are disgraced and misguided people who think their survival on the throne of oppression is dependent on defending the arrogant powers of the world, on alliances with Zionism and the US,” Khamenei said.
He accused Saudi Arabia’s ruling family, who are the custodians of Islam’s holiest sites in Mecca and Medina, of politicising the annual hajj pilgrimage, due to start at the end of the week, turning themselves into “small and puny Satans who tremble for fear of jeopardising the interests of the Great Satan (the United States)”.
For the first time in almost three decades, Iranians have been effectively barred from participating in this year’s pilgrimage to Mecca after talks on logistics and security fell apart.
But even by recent standards, with relations between the rival Middle Eastern powers at an all-time low, the language was tough.

Russian tycoon’s firm suspected of bribing regional heads: investigators
MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian state investigators said on Monday they had launched a bribery investigation against executives at a firm belonging to Russian tycoon Viktor Vekselberg.
Russian law enforcement forces on Monday were conducting searches in the offices of T Plus, a subsidiary of Vekselberg’s Renova group and the legal successor to energy company ZAO KES.
A Renova representative said two executives in companies controlled by the tycoon were being questioned by law enforcement.
Vekselberg, 59, Russia’s seventh richest man according to Forbes magazine, was not immediately available for comment. The Renova group said it was cooperating with the authorities in the investigation.
The Investigative Committee, the state body which investigates crimes, said in a statement it had opened a criminal case into allegations that former and current executives at a Vekselberg-controlled firm had paid large bribes to officials in Russia’s north-western Komi region.
Two armed men with insignia of the FSB security service on their uniforms were seen at the reception of Renova’s office in central Moscow, a Reuters witness said.

I’ve been warning against a rush to take DHS secretary Jeh Johnson up on his proposal to declare state voting systems “critical national infrastructure.”
Johnson’s plan would allow the federal government to essentially take over the state voting systems, by administering standards for their performance even more actively than is already the case under the Help America Vote Act of 2002.
My chief concern so far has been that the integrity of these systems should not be entrusted to a central, federal authority. I’d say this no matter who was in the White House, because it’s just a bad idea. It centralizes the power to affect every election in the country, in a way there can be no effective checks and balances on.

This article is laying out the case for decentralized control of the voting systems as both a check over one party controlling the national election from one location as well as a decentralized system being good protection against hacking since it would require hacking the system on several states to change the national election results. Which is also a good reason for each state to choose different voting machines to prevent one company being the weak point in the election.

Home-schooling is the only hope for teaching the true history of the unions because teachers are now an organized fortress. Untouchable incompetents, and even worse, dangerous subversives.
The main reason for minimum wage laws is to give the Unions a pay raise, the union pay rates are set on some multiple of the minimum wage, every time it raises they get a larger raise and the cost of what they make or provide goes up. When they came in they were needed but they were allowed to get too big and powerful and are now one of the nasty left wing evils in the west. I really don’t see a peaceful way to destroy them and they power and repeal the minimum wage laws.

I think I have mentioned the communist (literally a card carrying communist) Science Fiction author that wrote a series of books about The Peoples Capitalism that seems to be the way Obama and Hillary are trying to take us. The highly restrictive class system in the early books (set towards the end of the marxist system but he didn’t realize this fact) is shown to be much less restrictive in the books and stories he wrote about the early days of the system. I think there are some websites that have his books in digital format (the copyright has run out) if you are interested enough to look them up. He was a good author and his books that he wrote to help bring socialism to the US drove a lot of kids away from the left.

“The sophisticated ISIS network that plots foreign strikes had planned for the carnage in the November 2015 Paris attacks to be far worse, to occur in other European countries as well and, investigators believe, had planned to follow them up with strikes in several locations, CNN has learned.
CNN has obtained thousands of pages of documents and photos from internal European investigations and gathered information from sources close to the Paris investigation that together provide new details about the highly organized terror group intent on attacking overseas targets.
These documents reveal new information about two captured operatives who investigators believe intended to attack France. They also point, chillingly, to the existence of another suspected terrorist — never before named publicly — who authorities claim is linked to the Paris terror cell and was on the loose in Europe for months after that attack. That man, identified by authorities as Abid Tabaouni, was only arrested in July.
And the documents shed new light on the highly organized branch of ISIS devoted to plotting attacks inside Europe where, even now, sources told CNN, operatives await instructions from senior handlers in Syria.
“ISIS is increasing its international attack planning,” said Paul Cruickshank, a CNN terrorism analyst who contributed to CNN’s investigation and editor of CTC Sentinel, a publication issued by the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point. “It’s increasingly sophisticated in the way it does this. It’s set up an intricate, logistical support system for these terrorists … to launch these terrorist attacks.”
A CNN team spent months going through 90,000 pages of documents, most of them in French, that included a trove of interrogations, investigative findings and data pulled from cell phones offering insight into the external operations wing of ISIS known as the Amn al-Kharji.
The documents show:
a fuller portrait of the suspected terrorists’ extensive use of social media platforms such as Viber, Telegram and WhatsApp, many encrypted for secure communication. One app let them pick their own phone number, allowing them to disguise who was calling them and from where.
how ISIS handlers protect their missions by: giving operatives only as much information and money as they need to reach the next phase; contacting them on each leg of their journey; and insisting on pseudonyms, even within teams.
how the suspected terrorists constantly exchanged logistical advice with others in their network, including whether or not to use real names at border crossings and how to sneak across those borders illegally. One tip was to hide in train restrooms.

“THE Government has revealed enough local authority homes to resettle 20,000 Syrian refugees has been secured.
The migrants, all based in Lebanon at the moment, are due to be brought to Britain over the next four years.
Home Secretary Amber Rudd said 2,800 Syrians had arrived by the end of June and been settled in more than 100 council areas.
An extra £10million has also been pledged to help refugees arriving via the vulnerable person resettlement scheme learn English, the Home Office said.
Ms Rudd said the initiative, launched a year ago, was on track.
She said: “Securing the 20,000 pledges within 12 months is testament to the immense goodwill and generosity of the British people and the effort and determination of local authorities across the UK.

“The hard work will continue throughout this Parliament as we provide those who have been traumatised and damaged by war with a safe environment and the chance to rebuild their lives.”
The additional funding for English language training will mean all adults arriving through the scheme will receive an extra 12 hours a week of tuition, for up to six months, the Home Office said.
The Local Government Association’s asylum, refugee, and migration task force chairman, Councillor David Simmonds said: “We have previously said that we were confident in ensuring there were sufficient places to support the Government’s pledge to resettle 20,000 people by 2020, and the focus must now be on ensuring families are matched to the right placements and that they arrive safely and are well supported.
“Councils have an excellent track record in welcoming asylum seeking and refugee children and their families for many years and continue to work hard to support the Syrian resettlement scheme, alongside all the other schemes in current operation. “In June, Oscar-winning screenwriter David Franzoni announced his upcoming biography of the 13-century Persian poet Rumi, a production he believes will counter the negative portrayal of Muslims put forward in Western films. Yet despite the premise for the film, it was LA-born Leonardo DiCaprio who was tipped to play the lead role, with Robert Downey Jr as Shams of Tabriz, the spiritual guide who led Rumi to enlightenment.
Following Franzoni’s announcement, almost 7,000 people signed a petition, promoted under the hashtag #RumiWasntWhite, calling for a Middle Eastern actor to be cast as Rumi. Hollywood has drawn on a wealth of Middle Eastern actors to play terrorists, they pointed out, so why should a white man play one of the greatest poets of all time, who was born in present day Afghanistan?
If this casting goes ahead, DiCaprio and Downey Jr are set to join other white actors who have played people from a range of ethnic backgrounds in Hollywood movies, among them Rooney Mara, who played American Indian Tiger Lily in Peter Pan; Angelina Jolie cast as the Afro-Cuban Mariane Pearl in A Mighty Heart; Joseph Fiennes played Michael Jackson; and Ben Affleck was the Mexican-American Antonio J. Mendez in Argo.
Even when productions do cast actors and actresses from the Arab World the characters they play help to entrench widely held, tired, stereotypes about the region. There is perhaps no better example of this than the American TV series Homeland starring Roya Hammad, a Palestinian journalist sympathetic to the Palestinian terrorist Abu Nazir, the operational leader of Al-Qaeda. Abu Nazir supervises the captivity of Nicholas Brody – an American Marine who was captured in Iraq – turns him, and sends him back to the US to carry out missions for Al-Qaeda.
Abu Nazir represents the archetypal Arab terrorist, Roya the clandestine terrorist hiding in a suit (clear message: trust no one, not even the Western-looking Arabs). The Brody character – his conversion and subsequent assignments for Al-Qaeda – suggests that the ideology of Muslim terrorists can infiltrate all levels of society, even the families of white Americans.
The negative depiction of Arabs in popular culture has an impact far beyond our living rooms. The speeches of our politicians are littered with the same negative stereotypes of Arabs and Muslims, which not only reinforces them but dehumanises Muslim and Arab communities so much that we as observers barely flinch at illegal military invasions in the Arab world and increased surveillance at home.
In June this year, the monitoring group Tell MAMA reported that in 2015 anti-Muslim abuse, targeted largely at Muslim women, was up by 326 per cent. At the height of the furore surrounding the burkini ban in France, these hate crimes culminated last week in a middle-aged Muslim woman on a beach in France being forced to remove her headscarf by armed, policemen. No one on the busy beach intervened to help her. There is no doubt that the negative portrayal of Arabs and Muslims in popular culture has contributed
towards the fact that these hate crimes are carried out, and that they have increased.
In The TV Arab and Reel Bad Arabs, academic Jack Shaheen argued that since the 1920s Arabs have been depicted as one of the three Bs – “bombers, belly dancers or billionaires”. With his wife Bernice, Shaheen documents the depiction of Arabs in TV, film, magazines, video games, comic strips, toys and games, and together have compiled the Jack G Shaheen Archive out of their research, which is now housed at New York University.
Based on this research, Shaheen has concluded that stereotyping is everywhere, “like a virus.” The repetition of images fuels widespread assumptions about people; because films often portray Arab men as conniving or backward and the women as submissive, this can thus form the basis of our opinions about entire communities, particularly as many viewers will not have even met such people first hand.
“Stereotypes feed from ignorance and thrive in the absence of contact and engagement,” agrees Rasha Salti, curator of this year’s Safar contemporary Arab film festival to be held at the ICA in London from 14-18 September. Salti told MEMO that negative stereotyping and hate crimes are certainly an issue: “I don’t deny the reality of negative stereotyping, I go through passport control at airports often enough to know the implications of negative bias, painfully first-hand… hate crimes and negative stereotypes come hand in hand; they are different manifestations of the same situation.”
Less interested in confronting this negative stereotyping “head-on”, Salti wants to engage with audiences “from the terms set by the films and the filmmakers” of Arab cinema. These “terms” have become more daring and visible over the past 20 years and are not only contrary to the Orientalist depiction of Arabs in Western films, but also challenge the way that Arab dictators want the countries they rule over to be portrayed.
“Arab auteur filmmakers are politically engaged, that is a reality,” says Salti. “They have made their films against countless odds, forged a boldly independent, emotionally captivating and politically dissident or subversive cinema. Arab cinema of the past thirty years embodies the most cogent and fantastic counter-cultural archive that tells stories Arab dictatorships wanted to silence and represent realities that were intentionally kept invisible from mainstream culture.”
Lined up for this year’s festival is a film about the decade-long conflict in Algeria, the revolution in Tunisia and a production about everyday life in war-torn Aleppo. Safar’s programme doesn’t just tackle politics, though: Before the Summer Crowds is a psychological drama set in Egypt whilst Borders of Heaven features a family torn apart by grief in Tunisia.

Revealed: Islamic State Prison Full of ‘Violent Torture Tools’ for Women
Rebel fighters affiliated with the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have reportedly discovered a “hidden” detention center in northern Syria where Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) jihadists used the “worst, most violent torture tools” on female prisoners.
The prison was found in the northern Syrian city of Manbij, which was recently liberated from ISIS by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG)-led SDF. Fighters from the Manbij Military Council, which is part of the SDF, made the discovery.
Citing the independent news agency Arab24, Sky News reports that the prison contained 10 small rooms.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson spoke at the annual Islamic Society of America (ISNA) conference over the weekend, in what the Washington Post called an “impassioned speech” to empower ISNA’s participants.
ISNA is a group with Muslim Brotherhood origins and an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terror-financing trial. In fact, the Holy Land Foundation was based within the ISNA building. ISNA also deposited checks into its account that were made out to the “Palestinian Mujahadeen [jihadi fighters],” the name used at the time for Hamas’s military wing. The funding was transferred to the Holy Land Foundation.
The ISNA conference that Johnson spoke at included extremist speakers, as it has done in previous years. This year’s speakers included Jamal Badawi, a founder of another Brotherhood entity, the Muslim American Society. Badawi has praised the terrorist organization Hamas, preached in support of “combative jihad” and was personally listed in a U.S. Muslim Brotherhood directory.
Another conference speaker was Nihad Awad, found and executive director of the Council on Islamic American Relations (CAIR), another U.S. Brotherhood entity and unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land terror financing case.

Ladies and gentlemen, good evening. You just heard a message from the President of the United States, President Barack Obama.
I want to thank you for inviting me to be here today.
As Barack Obama’s presidency and our administration draw to a close, I am proud to have been part of it.
I have been on an incredible journey with Barack Obama, not just since he became President in 2009, but over the last 10 years — as part of his campaign, his transition team, his administration, and, now, his cabinet.
History will record not only the transformational changes President Obama brought about, but also that in 2008, he was elected president with 69 million votes — the largest popular vote for any one person in the history of this country, based on a campaign of hope and inspiration. With that came a new generation of voters, and an unprecedented period of inclusiveness and diversity in our political process.
As part of that, it is a privilege for me to be present in person here today, to speak to you, this full convention of the Islamic Society of North America. I’m told that I am the highest ranking U.S. government official and the first sitting cabinet officer to ever speak in person before this convention. I welcome that, as you have welcomed me. I am proud to have broken that glass ceiling, and to have created the expectation, in the future, that government officials of my rank will attend your annual convention.
President Obama has made it a priority for his administration to build bridges to American Muslim communities.
In 33 months as your Secretary of Homeland Security, I have personally visited American Muslim communities in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Detroit, Dearborn, Chicago, Columbus, Houston, Minneapolis, and Los Angeles. I have come to know many of you, and I hope you know me.
You have heard President Obama and me call out the discrimination and vilification you face in the current climate.
You have heard us say that the self-proclaimed Islamic State is neither Islam nor a state; you have heard us say that it is a group of terrorists attempting to hijack your religion.
You have heard us, before multiple audiences of different political stripes, refuse to bend to the political pressure to call terrorism “Islamic” extremism. We know that ISIL, though it claims the banner of Islam, occupies no part of your religion, a religion founded on peace.
After I am gone as Secretary, I hope you will always regard your Department of Homeland Security aligned in interest with you for peace, the safety of your family, and the protection of your homeland. I hope you will always regard our new Office for Community Partnerships as your partner.
Tonight, in this last and biggest opportunity I will have as your Secretary of Homeland Security to address an audience this large, all at once, I want to take our conversation to a new level.
A leader of this organization reminded me that we spend a lot of time telling young Muslims in this country what you should not become. A more effective message is to tell you what, in this great country, you can become. We must not simply curse the darkness, but offer a candle.
Tonight I will not look at this large group of Muslims before me in this room through a homeland security lens. Tonight I will not talk about counterterrorism. Tonight I will simply address you as who you are, “my fellow Americans.”
Tonight I speak especially to the young people in this audience, and to the parents worried about your future.
Many of the young people in this room worry that, because of the current climate, your religion, your skin color, and your attire, because of that you will never win full acceptance in this country.
I come before you tonight to assure you this is not true. Your struggle for full acceptance in this country is one you will win.
How do I know this? Because my African American ancestors and I have traveled a similar road.
I hear your stories of discrimination, vilification, and of the efforts to tar you with the broad brush of suspicion.
I hear about the bullying and physical attacks that Muslims are experiencing nationwide.
They are familiar to me. I recognize them. I look out on this room of American Muslims and I see myself. I see a similar struggle that my African American ancestors have fought to win acceptance in this country.
Realize it or not, your story is the quintessential American story.
Your story is an American story, told over and over again, generation after generation, of waves of people who struggle for, seek, and will eventually win your share of the American dream. Know the history of this country and you will know that — whether it’s Catholic Americans, Jewish Americans, Mormon Americans, Irish Americans, Italian Americans, Japanese Americas, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, or Muslim Americans — this will be true.
The arc of the American story is long, it is bumpy and uncertain, but it always bends toward a more perfect union.
Some of you are frustrated that you have been publicly denouncing violent extremism for years, sometimes at your own peril, and have not been recognized for it.
Some of you are discouraged that you must continually point to the patriotism of American Muslims, by pointing to your military service, to those American Muslims who have died in combat for your country.
I have another story for you. It’s about a man black named Charles S. Johnson, who lived in the segregated South years ago.
Dr. Johnson was born in Virginia in 1893, the son of an emancipated slave. Dr. Johnson fought in combat in World War One, became a prominent sociologist and president of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, and a public champion for civil rights for the African American.
Despite his academic degrees, his honorary degrees, his reputation, and his many achievements, in 1949 Dr. Johnson was called to testify in Congress before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Historians in this room know about the House Un-American Activities Committee. Part of its mission was to ferret out Communists in this country in the late 1940s and 1950s, during the Red Square, McCarthyism, and a great fear that Communists where hiding among us. Some of that suspicion was focused on African Americans who dared publicly challenge the government to deliver equal protection of the laws for all people.
Dr. Johnson appeared before this Committee and had to deny he was a member of the Communist Party, and to defend the patriotism of all African Americans. Of this he testified: “[It’s] like asking if Tennesseans, or Presbyterians, or foreign-born citizens, or American women, or persons with freckles, are loyal.” As the prime example of the African American’s patriotism, he noted that “in time of war they have pleaded for combat service, for the supreme hazards of military service. . . They have offered and risked their lives freely for their country even while bitterly resenting, at times, the conditions under which they were permitted to die in honor.”
Charles Johnson died 60 years ago, in 1956, just as the civil rights movement he championed was about to take flight. At the time, Jim Crow still existed in the South. Charles Johnson knew nothing else in the South. But, one month before he died, Dr. Johnson wrote this about the segregated South, in which, at the time, we were not allowed to vote, or live with, travel with, eat with or marry anyone of the white race:
“It is expected that Negro Southerners, as a result of [our] limited status in the racial system, would be bitter or hostile. . . Bitterness grows out of hopelessness, and there is no . . . hopelessness in the situation. . . . Faith in the ultimate strength of the democratic philosophy and code of the nation . . . has always been stronger than the impulse to despair.”
I believe that too. I believe that because Charles S. Johnson was my grandfather. He died a second class citizen, in fact and in law. But he had faith in this country.
Perhaps he imagined the unimaginable in 1956: that his own grandson would one day become the person in charge of the homeland security for this entire Nation, or, even more incredible, that I would serve in the cabinet of a black president. This is something, as recently as 10 years ago, I thought would never happen in my lifetime.
The House Un-American Activities Committee was abolished many years ago. I’m told it used to hold its hearings in Room 311 of the Cannon House Office Building on Capitol Hill in Washington. This is the same room in which the House Homeland Security Committee holds its hearings today. Therefore, sixty-seven years ago, my grandfather likely testified in that hearing room to defend his patriotism; now his grandson testifies in that same room to explain what the U.S. government is doing to defend our Nation.
This is the promise and the wonder of this country.
Follow the example of many people in this room, the leaders of this organization, and become full participants in our great democratic society. Continue to prod us toward a more perfect union. Aspire, excel, contribute, engage, and vote. Channel your energy in a way such that Muslim Americans too become recognized as a full part of the fabric of this diverse society, like others who have done before you.
This is your moment of opportunity.
For role models and inspiration, you can look to Muslims who are already shining examples of great Americans.
Muhammed Ali was not just a hero, he is a great American.
Dalilah Muhammad, who last month brought home from the Olympics the Gold Medal for the 400-meter hurdles, is a great American.
Captain Humayun Khan, who gave his life for our country in Iraq, is an American hero.
His Gold Star mother and his Gold Star father, who carries a copy of the U.S. Constitution in his pocket, are American heroes.
Like those who came before you, do not lose hope. Do not despair. Have faith in the code of this Nation. We will continue on the path toward a more perfect union.
If you know American history, take comfort in learning from it.
Yes, it is frustrating to listen to those who foment fear, suspicion and intolerance, who don’t know the mistakes of history, and are in the midst of repeating them. Have faith that the character of the American people as a whole is such that, in the end, we will choose not to drink this brand of soiled milk.
Ladies and gentlemen, fellow Americans: public officials in this country are often reluctant to ask the public we serve for your help. On behalf of myself and the President, I ask for your help. Hear this message and share it with others in your communities.
Light a candle. Show others the promise and the wonder of this country.

Iran’s former president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, saying he wants to “redefine revolutionary ideals” set up by the leader of Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, appears to be launching a campaign to run in the upcoming Iranian presidential elections, in February, 2017.
Ahmadinejad was well-known for his incendiary and provocative speeches, which included denying the Holocaust. At the end of his presidential term, from 2005 to 2013, his approval rating was extremely low, and he managed to drive away most constituents across political spectrum, including the topmost hardline leaders. He also became the first Iranian president since 1979 to be summoned by the parliament (Majlis) to answer questions regarding his activities and policies.
After all of this, the common conception among politicians, scholars and policy analysts was that Ahmadinejad would never return to politics. It seemed that his retirement plan focused on founding a university and teaching, but his plan to open a university failed.
Despite his low popularity among people, however, the “principalists” (ultra-conservatives) were still on his side, due to his fierce anti-US, anti-Western and anti-Israel policies and rhetoric, as well as the fact that he remains a major figure in the coalition of several conservative groups, the Alliance of Builders of Islamic Iran.
After Ahmadinejad’s presidency, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, appointed him to the Expediency Council, Iran’s highest political arbitration body, which arbitrates between the Guardian Council (the supervisory body over the parliament and elections) and the Islamic Consultative Assembly (parliament). The Expediency Council is predominantly made up of Iran’s hardline clerics, and functions as an advisory institution to the Supreme Leader.

The Invisible (Female) Palestinians

In a move that has outraged Palestinian women and various Palestinian factions, a number of Palestinian lists contesting the upcoming local elections, scheduled to take place on October 8, have decided to omit the names and photos of female candidates.
Instead of referring to the female candidates by name and publishing their pictures, the electoral lists are using the terms “the wife of” or “sister.”
Critics have denounced the move as a “sign of retardation, extremism and bigotry.” Other Palestinians have gone so far as comparing the removal of the female candidates’ names and photos from the lists to the cruel pre-Islamic practice of infanticide (wa’d).
The decision to conceal the names and photos of female candidates is seen in the context of the increased “Islamization” of Palestinian society, which is already considered highly conservative.
Apart from being a severe blow to the struggle of Palestinian women for equality, the move is in violation of the 2005 Palestinian Local Election Law, which stipulates that candidates must be fully identified by name, age, address and registration number in the electoral list.
This anti-woman undertaking is not taking place only in the Gaza Strip, under the control of the Islamist Hamas movement. It is also baring its fangs in some parts of the West Bank, which is ruled by the Western-funded Palestinian Authority (PA), headed by Mahmoud Abbas.

Macchina di Santa Rosa
The Macchina of Santa Rosa is a 30 metre high tower, which is rebuilt every year in the months of July and August in honor of Saint Rose of Viterbo, the patron saint of the city of Viterbo, Italy. Every year on the evening of 3 September 100 men called “Facchini di Santa Rosa” (porters of Saint Rose) hoist the Macchina and carry it through the very narrow streets and squares of the medieval town centre. The whole route is a little bit more than 1 km (1 mi).
The procession is an important event in Viterbo and attracts thousands of people. Today, the procession is included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The celebration consists of two distinct parts. On the afternoon of 2 September, a reliquary containing the heart of Santa Rosa is carried in procession accompanied by people in period costumes of the 14th through the 19th centuries. The transport of Machine of Santa Rosa takes place the following evening. The term “machine” is borrowed from classical Greek theater.
The transport of the Macchina dates back to the transfer of the body of Saint Rose of Viterbo. In 1258, six years after her death, her body was moved at the wish of Pope Alexander IV, from the former church Santa Maria del Poggio to the church Santa Maria delle Rose (today the pilgrimage chapel of Saint Rose). It is possible that originally a statue of St. Rose lit on a canopy was carried in procession.[3] Guilds were very active in the processions in the 14th century. From 1654 through 1663 the procession was suspended due to the plague.[…]

Egyptian philosopher Mourad Wahba expressed his views on the dangers inherent in religious fundamentalism in two TV interviews that aired on August 8.

“More knowledge, more jobs and far greater acceptance of Islam – What France must really do to help integrate its Muslim community into French life.
A recent meeting between France’s Muslim community and the government was presented as an effort to open a new chapter in relations with the country’s followers of Islam after a string of jihadist attacks and the damaging burqini row had left deep scars.
The meeting was followed by an announcement of the creation of an Islamic foundation, and religious association to help “build a French Islam steeped in the values of the French Republic ” namely liberté, egalité, fraternité and of course the most difficult – laicité or secularism.
But while foundations and associations may help, sociologists and Muslim community leaders who were at the meeting say France and the French need to do far more to really integrate the Muslim population and help bring about an end to the country’s insecurity over the influence Islam.
Here several experts on the subject of Islam in France give their views on what really needs to be done to open a new chapter.
‘France needs to accept a visible Islam’
Mohammed Moussaoui, president of the Union of French Mosques (UMF) and honorary president of the French Council of Muslim Faith attended the recent talks with the government and says France and the French people must come to terms with Islam being visible on the streets.
“The question of visibility in the public space, such as the wearing of the veil, is a recurring debate and it’s one that needs to be looked at with a lot of serenity,” Moussaoui told The Local.
“Every time it comes up it creates hysteria. Are French politicians ready to accept a visible Islam in the country or do they want it to be relegated to the private space?
“We cannot ask Muslims to change and we can’t ask them to disappear. We need to find a balance. They are citizens like everyone else and have a right to express their religion. They are not being provocative.
“France must accept it is a multi-religious and multi-cultural country, because it’s a fact. Allowing Muslims to express their faith would help them feel more a part of French society.
“Muslim women will always wear the headscarf and we can’t prevent them from doing that, it’s integral to their faith.”
“I would also say that Muslims should be conscious of the international context we are living in and the impact it has on France. There is a lot of fear around. Ordinary Muslims need to help reassure the population and show they are a source of appeasement and not be associated with violent extremist groups like Isis.
Moussaoui also said those in the middle ground, whether Muslims, Catholics or non-believers must work together to marginalize the extremists on both sides.
‘France has done a woeful job of economically integrating young Muslims’
Simon Reich, a professor of Global Affairs at Rutgers Newark and visiting researcher at the IRSEM think tank in Paris believes the answer lies in economically integrating its Muslim population.
“France has done a woeful job of economically integrating young Muslims. In the most part they remain poor and marginalized, both economically and politically,” Reich told The Local. “No foundation composed of hand-picked older members of the community will solve that problem.
“American history demonstrates that minority and immigrant groups first become economically integrated, then they become culturally and politically integrated. If they remain poor, then they generally remain unrepresented and often resort to civil disobedience measures. In rare instances they become radicalized. It’s interesting that Arabs and Muslims in the US are far wealthier than their counterparts in Europe – and far less supportive of Jihadism.
“Forming a foundation may well be a useful measure if it is truly representative of the community and it is combined with serious economic measures designed to create good jobs in the suburbs.
“I believe that Muslim representation, indeed the representation of any particular community, is a potentially healthy innovation. There is a real problem about how Muslim representation would actually be organized in France. If Muslims are to be legitimately represented, then it must come as a result of community activism not government fiat.”
‘Muslims must be treated as ordinary citizens’
Agnes De Feo, a sociologist and documentary filmmaker, said France could do a lot of good by just respecting its own constitution.
“Muslims in France must be considered like other French citizens and not as potential enemies,” De Feo said.
“They must be left free, not matter what the particular features they have, whether it be a veil or a beard etc,” she argues.
“The state should never react as long as they do not disturb public order. Muslims are only manifesting their beliefs, which is perfectly legal under French law. Most Muslims in France are French, they must be treated as ordinary citizens and have equal rights. Islam has to be accepted as a French religion.
“Can you imagine that these basic demands by Muslims are not accepted in France.”
‘There is a serious knowledge deficit around Muslim identities’
Raphael Liogier, a French sociologist and director of the observatory for religions, said the main issue a lack of understanding around Islam in France.
Liogier wants a new “Observatory of Identities” that could guide the government and politicians and help avoid the kind of damaging controversies such as the recent burqini bans in French beach resorts.
“We need to know what it really means when women wear a burqini or men grow a beard or wear other Muslim clothing because at the moment the French government is completely blind to all this,” Liogier told The Local.
“The observatory could help advise the government and politicians and show them that something like the burqini is worn by women who want to play sport and go on the beach and the people who fight against the most ware the Salafists who are totally against them swimming in the sea for pleasure.
“The observatory would help determine if there’s really a security risk from wearing a burqini or whether it’s just a fashion. We need to create the information that can be used by politicians because there’s a real deficit of knowledge that this observatory can fill.
Liogier says the observatory, which would be backed by the state, would fill the void that is often taken by experts, including himself, who are asked to comment on each controversy.
“We can do many things in the long run to help integrate Muslims in France, but if we don’t start with the basics then how can do anything else,” he said.”

” Amal Chammout recently became the first uniformed policewoman to wear a hijab on duty. Chammout’s picture went viral on social when she was announced as the first female police officer to wear the hijab in the United States.
Dearborn, Michigan, is known for having one of the largest Arab-American populations in the U.S, with 41 percent of residents who are of Arab descent.
The appointment of the 23-year-old Amal Chammout by Dearborn PD as an ordinance officer came to face the “Islamophobia” phenomenon that is spreading globally and to “dispel some of the stereotypes”, according to Ronald Haddad, Dearborn chief of police.
Haddad said that hijab won’t cause harm to anybody. He also described hiring Chammout as “a huge step for the community, for the Arab and Muslim community in particular.”
Chammout is an American citizen with Lebanese origins. She is from the southern town, Bahraich in Lebanon.
Chammout said in an interview with AlJadid Channel that she entered the police department to help people, assist law enforcement officials, and educate other people about public safety…”

“An Emirati man with suspected Islamist militant links went on trial in Abu Dhabi on Monday accused of running over and attempting to kill a US jogger, media reports said.
The defendant, who was not identified, is also accused of trying to join Al-Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate, plotting attacks in the UAE and promoting Islamist militant organisations including the Islamic State group, said state news agency WAM.
According to the prosecution, in May 2015 the 29-year-old suspect repeatedly ran over the unnamed US national with his car “with the intention of killing him,” said The National newspaper.
It said the American man, who was jogging in Abu Dhabi at the time, was injured but survived.
The defendant was charged with premeditated attempted manslaughter, the newspaper said.
“He is also accused of plotting to commit acts of terrorism in the UAE, including bombing the headquarters of Sky News Arabia in Abu Dhabi and Al-Arabiya in Dubai,” the daily said, referring to two news channels…”
Germany: ‘Merkel must go’ – AfD rally against refugee policy in Dessau-Rosslau
Dozens of the Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) supporters took to the streets of Dessau-Rosslau on Monday, to protest against the government’s refugee policy, following the party’s second-place showing in regional elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the day earlier.
The protesters held banners reading “Empower the police – protect the citizens” while chanting “Merkel must go.” AfD Chairmen in Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony, Andre Poggenburg and Armin-Paul Hampel respectively, led the demonstration.
On Sunday, the AfD pushed German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU party into third place, with the SPD taking top spot in the regional elections in Merkel’s constituency – Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Iraq: IS graveyard with over 300 graves of militants discovered in Fallujah
A graveyard containing over 300 graves of militants from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) have been discovered by the Iraqi Army in the recently liberated city of Fallujah, Monday, with many of the graves belonging to foreign fighters.
According to Iraqi military officials, the graves belonged to IS fighters who were killed during the massive military operation to liberate Fallujah.
Fallujah, about 40 miles (78 kilometers) west of Baghdad, was announced liberated from IS on June 5, 2016, following the Iraqi army’s final gains over the northwestern al-Julan neighbourhood, the last area controlled by IS in the city.
Saudi Arabia Wants to Roll Back Iran
On July 9, Prince Turki bin Faisal, former Saudi intelligence head, unprecedentedly attended a rally for the notorious Iranian opposition group Mujahedeen Khalq (MEK) and called for the overthrow of the Islamic Republic of Iran. His remarks were immediately followed on July 30 by a meeting between the head of the MEK, Maryam Rajavi, and the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, in Paris. Earlier before, in late March, the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI), which has not taken up arms against Iran for roughly twenty years, suddenly waged a vicious insurgency against Tehran, leading to bloody skirmishes between the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iranian Kurdish peshmerga in northwestern Iran. These sequential events herald a new era in confrontation between Tehran and Riyadh.
The growing escalation between Tehran and Riyadh has been sometimes mentioned in the context of a new geopolitical “Great Game.” Both countries have been engaged in a decades-long strategic contest for regional supremacy in an area stretching from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean and Arabian seas. The two powers are backing different sides in Syria, Iraq, Bahrain, Lebanon and finally Yemen.
