A Russian Su-27 jet fighter came within 20 feet of a U.S. RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft over the Black Sea on Monday in Moscow’s latest military provocation involving dangerous aerial encounters.
“On Jan. 25 an RC-135 aircraft flying a routine route in international airspace over the Black Sea was intercepted by a Russian Su-27 in an unsafe and unprofessional manner,” Navy Capt. Daniel Hernandez, chief spokesman for the U.S. European Command, told the Washington Free Beacon. “We are looking into the issue.”
Defense officials said the Su-27 flew alongside the RC-135, an electronic intelligence-gathering aircraft, and then performed what they said was an aggressive banking turn away from the intelligence jet.
The thrust from the Su-27 “disturbed the controllability” of the RC-135, said one official familiar with details of the incident.
A second official said the reconnaissance aircraft was flying 30 miles from the coast—well within international airspace and far away from any Russian territory—at the time of the encounter.
The Pentagon announced Thursday that it has concluded a flight safety memorandum with Russia after holding a video conference with Russian Defense Ministry officials.

State TV: Iran flew drone over U.S. aircraft carrier
Iran flew a surveillance drone over a U.S. aircraft carrier and took photographs of it as part of a naval drill, Iranian state TV reported Friday.
The report did not say when the incident happened, name the U.S. vessel or show any of the reported images. The state-run IRNA news agency said an Iranian light submarine closely participated in the surveillance operation.
Cmdr. Kevin Stephens, a spokesman for the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet based in Bahrain, declined to comment on the report.
“I can say that we are confident in the ability of U.S. naval forces operating in the region to respond appropriately as the situation dictates, and will exercise our right to defend our forces against any threat,” he said.

Mystery Device In Downtown San Francisco Is Air Sampler To Detect Biological Attack
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — A device which looks like an old-time train whistle connected to a locked box – and mysteriously set up on a downtown San Francisco street corner – has been determined to be part of the Department of Homeland Security’s Super Bowl security preparations.
According to the department, it’s an air sampling device used in the BioWatch program; a national system for detecting a biological attack.
The monitor is connected to a pole which connects to a large, metal box with wheels. The box is padlocked and has a yellow tag on it with a stern warning from Homeland Security: “DO NOT UNPLUG!!!”

Bank of Japan surprises with negative interest rate
The Bank of Japan on Friday introduced a negative interest rate policy, a move aimed at boosting a stumbling economic recovery and warding off deflation. Markets jumped on the intervention.
Tokyo’s central bank hopes that by imposing a 0.1% fee on selected current account deposits — effectively a negative interest rate — commercial banks will be encouraged to make more loans and so stimulate economic growth. Japan’s economy is forecast to grow just 1.1% in 2015 and 1.7% in 2016.
Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 stock index immediately leaped higher on the news. It ended the trading session up 2.8% at 17,518.30. China’s Shanghai composite advanced 3.1% to 2,737.60. The Japanese yen initially slid after the announcement before recovering to rise 1.7% against the dollar to 120.79.

GCHQ and the NSA ‘watched in real time’ as Israel bombed Gaza and monitored for any sign of any Israeli attack against Iran, according to reports
British and US intelligence hacked Israeli drones’ video feeds, allowing them to watch in real time as Israel bombed Gaza and spied on Syria, according to documents leaked by American whistleblower Edward Snowden.
GCHQ and its US counterpart, the NSA, also monitored the drone footage in the hope of getting an early warning if Israel was attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities.
The revelations, reported by The Intercept, are the latest in a series of examples of how the US and Israel profess friendship in public but also spy intensively on each other.
They may heighten tensions between the two countries, which are already at odds over the Iranian nuclear deal and Israel’s settlement policy in the occupied West Bank.
The hacking programme, codenamed Anarchist, also appears to confirm a badly kept secret: that Israeli drones carry missiles and are used in lethal strikes.

Google, according to Rupert Murdoch, has overawed the “posh boys in Downing Street” and elsewhere. The News Corp. chairman was responding last week to news that the U.S.-based Internet giant would pay Britain the measly sum of $185 million in underpaid taxes. Murdoch continued, “Google has cleverly planted dozens of their people in White House, Downing St, other governments. Most brilliant new lobbying effort yet.”
While Murdoch sounded like Noam Chomsky, Donald Trump’s recent screeds against hedge fund managers have seemed to invoke his inner Bernie Sanders. Multibillionaires are just the latest individuals to add their voices to a worldwide chorus condemning hyper-connected posh boys. They confirm that the hoary distinction between the left and the right needs to be updated.
Marine Le Pen, ostensibly on the far right, attacks France’s Socialist government for pampering “globalized elites at the expense of the people.” She vows to replace the “neo-liberal” French establishment with an aggressively interventionist state. Nationalization of banks is on the agenda of far-right governments in Hungary and Poland, along with more predictable anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant policies.

Japan puts military on alert for possible North Korean missile test
TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan has put its military on alert for a possible North Korean ballistic missile launch after indications it is preparing for a test firing, two people with direct knowledge of the order told Reuters on Friday.
“Increased activity at North Korea’s missile site suggests that there may be a launch in the next few weeks,” said one of the sources, both of whom declined to be identified because they are not authorized to talk to the media.
Tension rose in East Asia this month after North Korea’s fourth nuclear test, this time of what it said was a hydrogen bomb.
A missile test coming so soon after the nuclear test would raise concern that North Korea plans to fit nuclear warheads on its missiles, giving it the capability to launch a strike against rival South Korea, Japan and possibly targets as far away as the U.S. West Coast.
Japan’s Minister of Defense Gen Nakatani has ordered Aegis destroyers that operate in the Sea of Japan to be ready to target any North Korean projectiles heading for Japan, the sources said.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Missile Defense Agency on Thursday said it conducted a successful test of the ground-based U.S. missile defense system managed by Boeing Co aimed at demonstrating the effectiveness of a redesigned “kill vehicle” or warhead built by Raytheon Co.
The test purposely did not include an intercept by a ground-based interceptor launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, but was designed to observe the in-flight performance of the redesigned components and collect data on countermeasures carried by the target, according to statements by the agency and the companies involved.
Raytheon’s exoatmospheric kill vehicle, or EKV, is built to destroy incoming ballistic missiles by colliding them while they are still in space, a concept called “hit to kill.”
Thursday’s test was designed to demonstrate the ability of new “divert thrusters” that were developed by Raytheon to maneuver the warhead after a test failure several years ago.
The test, which involved various elements of the U.S. ballistic missile defense system, took place as U.S. officials said North Korea appeared to be preparing for a possible space launch that could advance its development of intercontinental ballistic missiles.
News of the possible North Korean space launch comes weeks after a fourth nuclear test conducted by Pyongyang on Jan. 6 that has raised concerns worldwide.
MDA said program officials would evaluate the performance of the U.S. missile defense system during Thursday’s test using telemetry and other data gathered during the test.

BERLIN (Reuters) – Forty percent of Germans want Chancellor Angela Merkel to resign over her refugee policy, a poll showed on Friday, in a sign of rising dissatisfaction with her welcoming stance towards people fleeing conflict and economic hardship in the Middle East and Africa.
Merkel, who enjoyed record high popularity ratings early last year, has grown increasingly isolated in recent months as members of her conservative bloc have pressed her to take a tougher line on asylum seekers and European allies have dragged their feet on the issue.
Responding to popular pressure, Merkel’s conservatives and their left-leaning Social Democrat (SPD) coalition partners agreed on Thursday to tighten asylum rules, reaching a compromise on how to stem the influx of migrants.
The Insa poll for Focus magazine surveyed 2,047 Germans between Jan. 22 to Jan. 25. It showed 45.2 percent believed Merkel’s refugee policy was not a reason for her to resign. It was the first time the pollster had asked voters whether Merkel should quit.

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed his indignation to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday over “made up accusations” against Russia’s leadership by senior officials from the U.S. administration, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said.
“It was stressed that the guilt for the deliberate escalation of tension in bilateral relations fully rests with Washington,” the ministry said.
A White House spokesman had said that earlier comments by a U.S. Treasury Department official alleging Russian President Vladimir Putin Putin was corrupt were “a reflection of the administration’s view”.
The Kremlin said earlier on Friday that these comments were outrageous and insulting, aiming to influence Russia’s next presidential election.

CARACAS (Reuters) – Retired pilot Rodolfo Gonzalez was relaxing at home after a cinema outing in April 2014 when Venezuelan intelligence agents burst into his Caracas apartment.
The officials handcuffed and whisked him away, accusing the 63-year old of being “one of the brains” behind that year’s anti-government protests that left 43 people dead, according to his wife who was briefly taken with him.
His accuser was a “cooperating patriot” who handed authorities a purported audio recording in which Gonzalez revealed “destabilizing actions” against President Nicolas Maduro’s government, according to a court transcript.
“Cooperating patriots,” or anonymous informers, have during Maduro’s nearly three years in power taken an increasingly important role in providing information that leads to arrests of government foes, a Reuters review has found.
Maduro’s government lauds them as guardians of its socialist revolution, helping curb the opposition’s radical wing and staving off alleged coup plans.
Critics and legal experts say the informers are used as pro-government snitches to spread fear, weakening Venezuela’s democracy and flawed justice system.

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – Aviation officials said on Friday a metal object recovered from Malaysia’s east coast a day earlier was not from missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.
It was the second time in a week authorities have dismissed speculation that wreckage from the jet had been found, after a similar piece of ocean debris recovered from a beach in Southern Thailand on Jan 23 proved not to be from MH370.
Malaysia’s transport minister Liow Tiong Lai said the two-meter-long object found in the eastern state of Terengganu on Thursday had been examined by officials from the ministry, the Department of Civil Aviation and Malaysia Airlines.
“The assessment found that the debris does not match those of a Boeing 777, thus confirming that the debris is not from MH370,” he said in a statement.
Flight MH370 disappeared with 239 people on board on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March 2014.

CARACAS (Reuters) – Venezuela’s opposition must define within weeks its strategy for ending Nicolas Maduro’s presidency given the OPEC nation’s “monstrous” economic crisis, opposition leader Henrique Capriles believes.
Having won control of the National Assembly last month due to voter ire at Venezuela’s punishing recession, the opposition coalition has vowed to find a constitutional mechanism to oust Hugo Chavez’ successor in the first half of 2016.
Options for the multi-faction coalition include demanding his resignation, forcing a recall referendum as allowed half-way through his term, or reforming the constitution to trigger a new presidential election.
“We have to find a common position. The clock is ticking … We can’t wait longer than the first quarter,” Capriles, a state governor who narrowly lost a 2013 presidential vote to Maduro, told Reuters in an interview late on Thursday.
“We still haven’t seen the full monstrousness of the crisis … Venezuela is heading toward a denouement this year,” added Capriles, likely to be a contender in any scenario of a new new presidential election.

LJUBLJANA (Reuters) – Slovakia’s foreign minister said on Friday the very low percentage of migrants so far relocated to European Union member states under the bloc’s compulsory quota system showed it was not working and he called for a rethink.
Eastern EU member states are mostly opposed to the quota system, which is strongly backed by Germany, the main destination for more than one million migrants who have arrived in Europe over the past year, many fleeing conflicts.
Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak said only 0.2 percent of a total 160,000 migrants due to take part in the scheme – already a small minority of those now inside the EU – had so far been redistributed among EU member states.
“Clearly it (the quota system) doesn’t work. Compulsory quotas are not a solution … are not feasible,” Lajcak said after talks with his Slovenian counterpart during a one-day trip to Ljubljana.
“We need a sustainable, credible, complex solution … We are asking the EU to speed up that process.”
Many of the migrants have escaped war in Syria and Iraq, entering the EU from Turkey and working their way north via Greece and the Balkans. The tiny ex-Yugoslav republic of Slovenia has already seen nearly 60,000 migrants pass through its territory in this month alone headed for northern Europe.
EU interior ministers agreed last September on the current scheme to redistribute some of the migrants to help relieve pressure on Germany and several other wealthier countries such as Sweden that are the main destinations.

Seriously? Police in one German city said to be looking the other way while refugees shoplift

Houston, they have a problem.
In dealing with the 10 million refugees from Syria and other Middle Eastern countries that have sought asylum in Germany, lifelong residents are finding it next to impossible to cope with some of the intrusions.
The cities of Cologne and Bonn, which host their annual carnivals next week, have handed out leaflets to refugees reminding them that raping women and urinating in public are violations of German law.
Reports out of the city of Kiel, meantime, suggest that police have collectively stopped pursuing cases where refugees were caught shoplifting because it was too much work to get them prosecuted.
Local newspaper Kieler Nachrichten reported Thursday that police officers in the city were instructed not to pursue minor offenses such as shoplifting and property damage. Prosecuting the refugees is hard in cases where they don’t carry proper identification documents.
Police documents state a threshold was established where “serious cases of theft and personal injury” should be treated equally, regardless of the perpetrator’s origin. The decision was made in October after several shoplifting cases turned out to be dead ends.

Two jailed for handing out Isis leaflets on London’s Oxford Street
Two street preachers who handed out Islamic State leaflets outside the flagship branch of Topshop on Oxford Street, central London, have been jailed for inviting support for a terrorist group.
Ibrahim Anderson and Shah Jahan Khanwere among a group who were reported to police by two sisters as they preached in August 2014 to passersby and handed out leaflets in support of the establishment by Isis of a caliphate.
Asmaa and Reem al-Jufaisha, who were returning from a nearby Palestinian rights demonstration, confronted the men and took pictures of the stall decorated with the Isis logo, which they handed to police, the court heard.

AUSTRIA – Asylum seeker found guilty of rape will not be deported
A 17-year-old asylum seeker who raped a 72-year-old pensioner has been jailed for 20 months.
Details of the case were revealed this week when the now 18-year-old from Afghanistan appeared in court.
At the same time, it was revealed that after serving his sentence he will not be deported as the sentence is not more than three years, according to a report in the Kurier newspaper.
The pensioner, whose daughter Sylvia was a helper working with refugees, had been walking her dog alongside the canal in Traiskirchen, where Austria’s largest refugee centre is located.
She was attacked last autumn, but police admitted it was not reported at the time to local media because of the sensitivity of the subject.
The 72-year-old woman, identified only as Christina F., said: “It was a really hot day and I decided to take my dog for a walk along the Schwechat River, and saw two young men swimming there.”
She said that one of the young men had reached out his hand to her, asking her to help him onto the bank, which she did. She said: “Suddenly, I felt a blow from behind.”
She was grabbed and then pushed to the ground, and the attacker put his hand over her mouth and used his other hand to tear off her clothing.
A friend of the old woman, Hans Vesely, 72, said: “The dog that she had with her was 13 years old and was sadly not up to protecting his mistress from the attack.”
The badly injured woman, who weighs just 48 kilos (7.5 stone) and had been unable to fight the men off, managed to get herself home where she locked the door. She was found later by a friend who saw her bruises from the beating, and she confessed what had happened.
“She is not the same woman anymore. She doesn’t trust being left on her own and does not leave home, and she’s become very weak since the incident,” Vesely said.
The attacker was only caught because he committed another crime after the rape, and was forced to give a DNA sample. The DNA sample provided matched the one found on his elderly victim, and he was arrested.
The teenager, identified only as Wahab M., initially denied the rape, claiming that he was drunk and could not remember what happened. In addition, his friend who was also arrested told police he had not seen anything.
Because at the time he was only 17 years old, Wahab M. was punished by the youth court where the maximum sentence is five years, but because he had no previous convictions and eventually admitted the rape in the face of the DNA evidence, it was reduced to 20 months. The shorter length of sentence means he will not face deportation.
Interior Ministry officials said that last year 3,278 asylum applicants were deported, but in almost every case it was because their application had been rejected. Of those deported, less than a handful of them were sent back because of a criminal conviction.

RT – Austria won’t deport Afghan asylum seeker who raped 72yo woman
An 18-year-old asylum seeker who raped a 72-year-old pensioner will not be deported from Austria to Afghanistan after serving his 20-month prison sentence.
The Afghan asylum seeker, identified as Wahab M., was found guilty of raping an elderly woman by the Regional Court on Wednesday, Austrian press reported. He was sent to jail and issued a €5,000 fine.
The maximum penalty would have been five years behind bars, according to Austria’s Kurier newspaper, butthe judges considered several mitigating factors such as his being underage (the attacker was 17 at the time of the incident), his confession and the absence of a criminal record.
After serving his sentence, the refugee will remain in Austria as he received a short term in jail (less than three years).
In the meantime, the newspaper revealed new details of the case. The 72-year-old woman was identified as Christina F., from the town of Traiskirchen, in eastern Austria. Traiskirchen currently has one of the biggest refugee centers in Austria. Christina’s daughter Sylvia was reportedly working with asylum seekers.

Germany: Hand grenade attack on refugee camp leaves site on lockdown
A refugee camp in Villingen-Schwenningen was attacked with a live hand grenade early on Friday morning, with authorities inspecting the scene of the crime later in the day. The attackers removed the pin of the device and launched it at the Baden-Wurttemberg hostel which houses up to 170 refugees. However, the grenade failed to explode, resulting in no injuries. The incident comes as increasing levels of anti-immigrant violence swells in the region.
Egypt minister calls for killing 400,000 Brotherhood members and supporters
“Egypt’s justice minister said on Wednesday that he will not rest until hundreds of thousands of Muslim Brotherhood members and their supporters are killed, in revenge for slain army and police officers.
Ahmad al-Zend told an Egyptian television programme that 400,000 Muslim Brotherhood members, who he described as terrorists, should be put to death.
“I swear to God, the fire will not be put out in my heart unless at least ten thousand [MB members] for each [slain officer] are killed,” the former appeals court judge said.
In response to Zend’s 400,000 figure, the host of the television show said there were only 10,000 Muslim Brotherhood members. Zend then clarified “not just them, but those who assist them, love them and those who got used to money from Turkey, Qatar and Iran”.
Zend, a fierce and outspoken critic of the Muslim Brotherhood, was appointed to his position in May 2015, after his predecessor Mahfouz Saber said that the sons of garbage collectors could not be good judges because they do not come from morally and financially respectable backgrounds.
The minister also said that he will resign from his post if the death penalties of jailed Brotherhood leaders are not carried out.”

Saudi Arabia: Video captures moment of explosion that killed 2 in Shia mosque
At least two people were killed and seven injured after an explosion followed by gunfire rocked the Shia Imam Reza Mosque in the town of Mahasen in the eastern province of Al-Ahsa, Friday.
Local sources said that police forces exchanged fire with five armed men. Video footage has also been released of worshippers preventing one of the attackers from activating a suicide belt. The attacker has reportedly been arrested.
The attack took place during Friday prayers at the mosque. Security forces and medical services rushed to the scene of the attack shortly afterwards. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Egypt jails prominent writer for insulting Islam
“A prominent Egyptian writer was reportedly sentenced to three years in prison on Tuesday for blasphemy after criticising the slaughter of animals during a Muslim festival.
Fatima Naoot, a poet and former parliamentary candidate, is the second public figure in Egypt to receive a jail term in less than a month for charges related to blasphemy. She was also fined $2,550.
Naoot’s sentence was set to begin immediately, but she can appeal her sentence from behind prison bars which her lawyer said she planned to do.
A judicial official said that Naoot was sentenced for insulting Islam after she criticised animal slaughter during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which she described in a Facebook post as the “greatest massacre committed by human beings”.
The holiday honours the willingness of the Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his young first-born son, Ismail, as an act of submission to God’s command, before God intervened to provide Abraham with a lamb to sacrifice instead.
“[It’s] a yearly massacre because a good man once had a nightmare about his good son, and although the nightmare has passed for the good man and his son, the [sheep] pay their lives as a price for that sacred nightmare,” Naoot also reportedly wrote in an article in the daily El-Masry El-Youm.”

Swedish police have had to act on more than 5,000 incidents concerning asylum accommodation and other issues concerning migrants since October, according to figures obtained by a Swedish newspaper.
According to SvD’s collation of all R291 cases, police have been called out to no fewer than 559 registered assaults, 450 fights, 194 cases of violent threats, 58 fires, two bomb threats, nine robberies and four rapes, all involving recently arrived asylum seekers.

EgyptAir mechanic suspected in Russian plane crash
An EgyptAir mechanic whose cousin joined Islamic State in Syria is suspected of planting a bomb on a Russian passenger plane that was blown out of Egypt’s skies in late October, according to sources familiar with the matter.
So far Egypt has publicly said it has found no evidence that the MetroJet flight, which crashed in the Sinai Peninsula after takeoff from Sharm el-Sheikh airport, killing all 224 people on board, was brought down by terrorism.
A senior security official at the airline denied that any of its employees had been arrested or were under suspicion, and an Interior Ministry official also said there had been no arrests.
But the sources, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the ongoing investigation, said the mechanic had been detained, along with two airport policemen and a baggage handler suspected of helping him put the bomb on board.
“After learning that one of its members had a relative that worked at the airport, Islamic State delivered a bomb in a handbag to that person,” said one of the sources, adding the suspect’s cousin joined Islamic State in Syria a year and a half ago.
“He was told to not ask any questions and get the bomb on the plane.”
Another source said of the other suspects: “Two policemen are suspected of playing a role by turning a blind eye to the operation at a security checkpoint. But there is a possibility that they were just not doing their jobs properly.”
None of the four have been prosecuted so far, the sources told Reuters.
The crash has called into question Egypt’s drive to eradicate Islamist militancy and hurt its tourism industry, a cornerstone of the economy. Islamic State’s Egypt affiliate is waging an insurgency in parts of the Sinai, although mostly far from the tourist resorts along its Red Sea coast.
Russia and Western countries have long said that they believe the flight was brought down by a bomb smuggled on board. Egypt however has so far publicly said it has not found any evidence of foul play.
Any formal charges or official Egyptian confirmation that a bomb brought down the Airbus A321 could potentially expose Egypt to compensation payments to the families of the victims.
The EgyptAir senior security official said state security police had investigated all workers at Sharm el-Sheikh airport without finding any evidence implicating any of them.
The official said state security traced the family connections of all the employees and they were cleared.
“Any employee who shows sympathy to militants is prevented from going to work in any airport,” he told Reuters.
An Interior Ministry source also said no one had been arrested in connection with the crash.
“We are awaiting results of the investigation.”
Islamic State’s online magazine carried a photo of a Schweppes soft drink can it said was used to make an improvised bomb that brought down the Russian airliner.
The photo showed a can of Schweppes Gold soft drink and what appeared to be a detonator and switch on a blue background, three simple components that if genuine are likely to cause concern for airline safety officials worldwide.

Yemen: US flag burned at mass anti-war protest in Sanaa
Several thousand protesters took to the streets of Sanaa on Friday to call for an end to the 10-month-long war and denounce America’s alliance with Saudi Arabia over the conflict. The protest comes a week after US Secretary of State John Kerry visited Riyadh and pledged his support for Saudi Arabia’s military assault on Yemen.
Protesters burnt a US flag and held banners denouncing the USA in protest against the coalition. A large Yemeni flag was marched through the centre of the war-torn city.
Kerry’s state visit to Saudi Arabia last Saturday confirmed the two nations’ close ties and outlined America’s support for the Saudi-led military campaign. Kerry declared that the Houthi insurgency and the threat from militant groups such as al-Qaida were reasons for backing the assault.
France to recognise Palestinian state if deadlock with Israel not broken
France will recognise a Palestinian state if its efforts in coming weeks to try to break the deadlock between Israelis and Palestinians fail, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Friday.
“France will engage in the coming weeks in the preparation of an international conference bringing together the parties and their main partners, American, European, Arab, notably to preserve and make happen the solution of two states,” he said.
Fabius said that as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, France had a responsibility to try to keep up efforts to find a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do” evidently does not apply to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. During his visit to Rome this week, Rouhani was spared an encounter with ancient nude Roman statues. Nude statues at Rome’s Capitoline Museums, including a centuries-old Venus, were covered up in deference to Rouhani’s Islamic faith, as the Iranian president proceeded to meet with Italian government officials and sign 17 agreements with Italy. This was but the latest exercise in ongoing European submission to Muslim cultural norms in the name of multiculturalism.
Responding to backlash, Italian government officials tried to cover up whom had actually decided on the statues’ covering. Italy’s culture minister even took it upon himself – belatedly – to criticize the decision as “incomprehensible.” For his part, Rouhani denied that his government had requested such statuary modesty, but he was appreciative of the gesture nevertheless. “I thank you for this,” he said when asked about the temporary accommodation.
Submission to Iran’s Islamic cultural norms not only does a disservice to Italy’s own rich history and culture. It sends the wrong signal to Iranian citizens living in Iran, who are trying to seek more individual freedoms.

“You know that I, like millions of Soviet citizens, over 20 million, was a member of the Communist Party of the USSR and not only was I a member of the party but I worked for almost 20 years for an organization called the Committee for State Security,” Putin said, referring to the KGB.
“I was not, as you know, a party member by necessity,” he said. “I liked Communist and socialist ideas very much and I like them still.”
In his speech, Putin insisted he was never just a “functionary” when it came to party matters and said the Moral Code of the Builder of Communism—a set of rules to be followed by all party members—“resembles the Bible a lot.”
According to the Russian president, the code revolved around key concepts such as brotherhood, equality and happiness.

The Socialist Face of “Immigrant Rights”
Inside the corrosive agendas of Congressman Luis Gutierrez.
Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Illinois) reacted with elation to the Supreme Court’s recent announcement that it will soon hear the case of Texas v. United States, to determine the fate of President Obama’s “Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents” (DAPA). That executive action, which Obama issued in November 2014 by circumventing Congress and usurping its lawmaking authority, gave millions of illegal immigrants temporary legal status, work permits, eligibility for certain publicly funded benefits, and protection from deportation.
It’s not at all surprising that Gutierrez avidly supports DAPA. Like all dutiful socialists, he has long viewed the heavy hand of centralized government as the indispensable linchpin of civil society. When he launched his political career as a Chicago alderman in the 1980s, Gutierrez was a member of the Puerto Rican Socialist Party. Throughout his 23 years in the House of Representatives, he has been a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the socialist wing of the Democratic Party. And his political campaigns have drawn significant support from the Democratic Socialists of America.
In the mid-1990s, Gutierrez developed close ties to the New Party in Chicago. The goal of this socialist political entity was to endorse and elect far-left public officials—usually Democrats—as a means of moving the Democratic Party ever further to the left, thereby setting the stage for the eventual rise of a new socialist “third party.” The New Party’s most noteworthy member at that time was none other than Barack Hussein Obama.
In 1999 Gutierrez collaborated with fellow Progressive Caucus members to pressure President Bill Clinton to free 16 convicted terrorists belonging to the FALN, a Marxist-Leninist paramilitary organization that had carried out 146 bombings during a 25-year period. Indeed, Gutierrez was the FALN’s chief spokesman and advocate during the campaign to release its incarcerated members.

n my correspondence regarding the events in Cologne, an editor of a Russian newspaper asked a natural but discouraging question. Perplexed, he asked me: “Where were the German men?”
Indeed, for those of us who grew up in Soviet Russia, it would be inconceivable that some drunk young people could publicly mock and harass girls on New Year’s Eve in the very center of Moscow or Saint Petersburg. If they dared to do this, they wouldn’t survive until the morning; they would become “martyrs” and would have their way with 72 virgins in a completely different realm.
Ethical codes, embedded in us on a genetic level, would demand that we intervene on behalf of the women. Especially in a situation where normal adult men were more numerous than the rapists, and the rapists themselves were not terrorists, cyborgs or aliens, but mere street punks.
As it turned out, in Germany, Sweden, Austria and elsewhere, these codes were fatally violated. A great number of strong healthy men, having heard the girls screaming and crying, and having seen the crimes being committed, didn’t do anything to save the victims. In rare cases, the girls were defended by migrants from Eastern Europe or Third World countries.

SENEGAL – French mag scraps cartoon in Senegal row on Islam, handbags and gays
An influential French news magazine Friday removed a cartoon of a revered Senegalese Muslim leader that sparked outrage in the west African nation in a row involving Islam, handbags and homosexuality.
The row erupted after Jeune Afrique published a story and an illustration on its website Thursday including a caricature of Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba, founder of the Mouride Brotherhood, triggering a wave of protests which forced the magazine to take the offending article down.
“We do not accept that a person as illustrious as Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba should be brought into this type of debate,” Senegalese government spokesman Seydou Gueye told RFM, a private radio station.
“We cannot accept the dissemination of such a degrading article… the government has expressed its indignation in the strongest possible way and firmly condemns this article,” he said.
Mouride spokesman Serigne Bassirou Mbacke Abdoul Khadre, who is based in Senegal’s second largest city Touba — the Brotherhood’s spiritual home — had denounced the offending article as an attack on Bamba and his followers, several newspapers reported on Friday.
“The disciple who sees his master attacked could have an unpredictable reaction,” he warned.
The illustration was published with an article about a controversy in Senegal over men carrying handbags following a new fashion trend sparked by a young singer called Wally Seck.
But the fad has been widely criticised, with some critics even suggesting it was promoting homosexuality, which is illegal in this country of 14 million people, most of whom are Muslim.
In the article, which ran under a cleverly-worded French headline that plays on the word handbag and loosely translates as “It’s all fun and games until somebody gets hurt”, the magazine used a caricature of a westerner smoking a cigar looking at a photo of Bamba in a traditional long robe who remarks “Hey, why’s he wearing a dress?”
– A profuse apology –
But there was am immediate backlash on social media sites in Senegal, with Jeune Afrique quickly changing the cartoon to show a man in a long African robe.
By Friday, clicking on the article linked to a message from editor-in-chief, Elise Colette, offering the magazine’s “sincere apology” and saying that in light of the backlash, she had “decided to take down the cartoon and the accompanying text.”
“With this drawing, our intention was not to insult anyone, and certainly not to harm the image of Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba who is venerated by many followers, but to expose the stupidity of those who cannot differentiate between a caftan and a dress,” she wrote.
Ninety percent of Senegal’s population is Muslim, most following Sufi Islam represented by different brotherhoods which emerged at the end of the 19th century out of resistance to French colonialism.
The Mouride brotherhood, founded by Bamba in 1883, is one of the most powerful and its influence pervades all areas of Senegalese life, including politics and the economy.
Both President Macky Sall and his predecessor Abdoulaye Wade are members of the Mouride Brotherhood, and many of its members live in the United States and in Europe.

Police Arrest Anti-Gay Demonstrators in Senegal
The head of an anti-gay coalition says police have arrested 11 people in Senegal’s capital during a demonstration against the release of 11 people accused of homosexual acts.
Abdoulaye Barro said Friday about 100 people from a 20-group anti-gay coalition staged the demonstration. He said police dispersed demonstrators and arrested some because the protest wasn’t authorized.
Residents in Kaolack, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) from Dakar, say police arrested 11 people on Dec. 25 after they attended the celebration of a gay marriage. Protesters Friday called on the government to express outrage for their release some days earlier.
Homosexual acts are criminalized in at least 34 African countries, including Senegal, where they are punishable by up to five years prison and fines of up to $2,500.
