ECB vice president says immigrants can stop Europe’s ‘demographic suicide’ (reuters, Sep 16, 2015)

“Europe’s ageing society is committing “demographic suicide” and needs immigrants to keep its workforce from shrinking further, the vice president of the European Central Bank told Reuters. In a wide-ranging interview, Vitor Constancio underlined the ECB’s willingness to print more money, saying that it had bought significantly less than peers in the United States, Japan or Britain. But he cautioned that while the ECB could extend money-printing, expectations that the central bank could single-handedly turn around the euro zone’s economy were unrealistic. Immigration, he said, could help.
Constancio, who deputizes for ECB president Mario Draghi on the ECB’s executive board, addressed one of the factors slowing the region’s economy, namely an ageing society and shrinking workforce that is set to reduce further in the coming decades. “This is a very acute problem because for years Europe has been doing a sort of collective demographic suicide,” said the former politician from Portugal, one of the countries worst hit by the downturn. “To change the demographic trends, promoting birth is not enough. It also has to be done through immigration. If not, we’re creating a great difficulty to growth and to the welfare of future generations,” said Constancio, who is 71.
He said the European Central Bank has scope to expand its efforts to stimulate the economy through quantitative easing, but Europe also needs the U.S. and Chinese economies to motor ahead. Constancio warned that Europe’s economic growth potential was weak, due to factors including a shrinking labor market. Monetary policy is powerless in this respect. “Potential growth is very low and in present conditions, we fear that this will be a protracted period of low growth,” he said.
The frank remarks come as people fleeing war flood into Europe from areas such as Syria and Afghanistan along with migrants seeking work, stoking tensions between European Union countries over how to manage or try to deter the influx.
Germany re-established border controls, stopping a system of passport-free travel across the region, while Hungary is closing down its border with Serbia, blocking a main route into the bloc. European Union ministers failed on Monday to break a deadlock over sharing out responsibility for sheltering some of the hundreds of thousands of people who have sought asylum in Europe this year, leaving the shape of any such deal in doubt.
Constancio, formerly Portugal’s finance minister and secretary general of its Socialist party, blamed high unemployment for a “dramatic … backlash” against immigration and said that the large number of unemployed people in Europe was “destabilizing the continent”.
The euro area population rose just 0.25 percent last year with seven of 19 nations recording a drop. In contrast, the U.S. population rose by 0.75 percent, while Australia, which has not had a recession since 1991, recorded a 1.4 percent rise. Unemployment across the 19-country euro bloc remains high but there are large differences between countries such as Greece or Spain, which are still struggling after the debt crisis, and stronger states including Germany.
While the number of those employed in Spain fell in the five years to 2014 by about 1.8 million and also dropped across the euro zone, according to European Union statistics, Germany’s workforce increased by about 1.4 million. Immigration reflects this trend with the numbers moving to Spain falling in the run up to 2013, while almost 700,000 moved to Germany in the same year – roughly twice the level in 2009. “The unemployment rate in Europe is a very high 11 percent, which is destabilizing the continent,” Constancio said. “European values are being eroded as a result of the fear that unemployment creates.” Such divergence adds to tensions between countries in the bloc.
A leftist government in Greece, for instance, sought to rewrite the terms of its bailout but was rebuffed by Germany, whose finance minister even raised the prospect of its departure from the currency union.
Constancio played down the prospect of this ever happening. “There was never any doubt among the majority of member countries (that) the euro is irreversible,” he said. “The actual prospects of that happening was never for real.” He called for reforms that would tighten the bond between countries in the euro zone. Other policy makers have raised the idea of a central treasury for the bloc although any such step is far off and may not happen at all.”At the ECB, we are doing the utmost within our mandate,” Constancio said, adding: “There are excessive expectations about what central banks can do.””…”

“Facebook has promised new measures to help Germany counter racism and anti-migrant abuse on the internet.
Facebook says it will promote “counter speech” in Germany to combat such prejudices and will deploy experts to monitor hate speech and act against it.
It was a response to German government concern about a spate of race hate messages, some targeting politicians who defended the rights of migrants.
The government has urged Facebook to do more to delete and combat racist abuse.
Germany’s official welcome for a record number of refugees – mainly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan – has triggered a backlash from nationalists, including neo-Nazis.
German Justice Minister Heiko Maas discussed the matter on Monday with Richard Allen, Facebook’s public policy manager in Europe.

“US Secretary of State John Kerry has called his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in a bid to clarify the intent of Moscow’s military build-up in Syria.
Mr Kerry warned that continued support for President Bashar al-Assad “risks exacerbating and extending the conflict,” a statement said.
The US accuses Russia of boosting its military presence in Syria.
Russia – Mr Assad’s ally in the four-year civil war – says it is helping Syria fight Islamic State militants.
Moscow has increased its presence in the country just as the regime is losing ground to rebel groups.
Mr Kerry’s phone call to the Russian foreign minister is believed to be his third in the past 10 days.
The state department statement said Mr Kerry warned that Russia’s support for President Assad was “undermining our shared goal of fighting extremism if we do not also remain focused on finding a solution to the conflict in Syria via a genuine political transition”.
“Secretary Kerry also reaffirmed the US commitment to fight ISIL (Islamic State) with a coalition of more than 60 countries, of which Assad could never be a credible member, and emphasised the US would welcome a constructive Russian role in counter-ISIL efforts.”

“The Australian government has confirmed it has launched its first air strikes inside Syria against targets of the so-called Islamic State (IS).
Australia is part of an international military coalition targeting IS strongholds in Syria and Iraq.
Three air strikes were made on Monday, destroying an IS armoured personnel carrier and a crude oil collection point, the US said in a statement.

Refugee crisis: Chaos as Hungary blocks most migrants at Serbian border (CNN, Sep 16, 2015)

“Hungary closed one of the main routes Tuesday that migrants are using to reach the European Union — plugging the final hole in its border fence with Serbia, implementing harsh new rules for anyone attempting to enter illegally and leaving hundreds massed on its border.
A railway carriage fortified with razor-wire was wheeled in to block the remaining gap in the fence with neighboring Serbia, closing a route that tens of thousands of refugees have used to escape bombings and terrorism in their homelands.
Refugees were trickling into Hungary, according to a government spokesman.
Zoltan Kovacs told CNN’s Hala Gorani that 70 people had their asylum applications accepted and 40 were rejected. About 275 people were arrested at the border.
“Thirty-five of them, mainly women and children, have already been transferred to shelters within the country, according to the European protocol,” Kovacs said.
Hungary is a member of the European Union; Serbia, to its south, is not but is in negotiations to join.
Under laws that took effect Tuesday, anyone caught climbing the fence faces up to three years in jail. Hungarian authorities said arrests had already begun.
“We call this as a temporary fence. Obviously it is … a must decision (rather) than a nice decision,” Kovacs said.
“We don’t like building fences, but up until we are able to reinstate border control on the natural border/green borders of the country, we have no other choice.”
Registration and entry to Hungary will now be possible only at two assigned entry points, he said….”

Islamic State Syria advance pushes France to begin air strikes (reuters, Sep 16, 2015)

“Islamic State fighters have made considerable progress near the contested northern Syrian city of Aleppo and are threatening to rout core elements of Western-backed Syrian rebel forces there, France’s defense minister said on Wednesday.
The Islamist militant group launched an offensive in northern Aleppo province last month, in a blow to the rebels in an area where the United States and Turkey are planning to open a new front against the movement.
Jean-Yves Le Drian told France Inter radio that one of the reasons why Paris had decided to join air strikes in Syria over the coming weeks was because Islamic State was expanding rapidly.
“What is certain is that things have changed drastically. For several months Daesh (Islamic State) has considerably extended its presence on Syrian territory,” he said.
“It’s true in Aleppo, but also on the Homs-Damascus line. Today Daesh has progressed in a way that it is threatening the Syrian resistance in Aleppo region, but also Lebanon if it manages to break through the Damascus-Homs axis.”
Aleppo was Syria’s most populated city and commercial hub before the conflict erupted in 2011. Reduced to rubble in many areas, it has been carved up between government forces and various insurgent groups.
France until now had only taken part in air strikes against Islamic State in neighboring Iraq – contributing just 3 percent of coalition strikes there. It has also provided limited logistical support to rebels, including Kurds, that it considers moderate in Syria.
“The situation is different to last year. Blocked in Iraq, Daesh has been on the offensive in Syria. The situation is very serious,” Le Drian said.
Paris was ready to join air strikes on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces in Syria in 2013 before U.S. President Barack Obama backed off the plan.
It has since adopted a more cautious position in Syria and officials have stressed that any air strikes carried out in Syria will be done independently, not under U.S. command.

The 15 Chechens looking to cross the border from Turkey to Syria didn’t strike Abdullah as particularly important or unusual.
It was early summer in 2012, and as a smuggler based in the Turkish border town of Killis, Abdullah, who’d fled his home village in Syria because of fighting on the outskirts of Aleppo, was used to secretive groups of foreigners – journalists, aid workers and many recently aspiring jihadists – hiring him to cross Turkish military lines at the border while avoiding what was then still a significant Syrian government presence in northern Syrian.
“In 2012, everyone was coming to Syria and we had too much work leading all kinds of people across the border,” he explained over lunch in Killis, a Turkish town just a few miles from the rebel-held Syrian city of Azzaz. “A lot were Muslims who had come to support the revolution against Bashar Assad from every country. So many from Europe, Russia, Germany, France. . . .”

Syria’s Assad Rejects Resignation Amid Fight With Islamists
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad rejected calls to step down and criticized the U.S. and its European and Arab allies for not coordinating with him on the fight against Islamic State as hundreds of thousands of refugees flee the civil war in his country.
“The president comes to power with the consent of the people, through elections, and he leaves at the request of the people, not by a decision of the U.S., the UN Security Council, the Geneva Conference or the Geneva Communique,” Assad said in an interview with Russian media, according to state-run RIA Novosti. “That’s my principle position.”
More than 250,000 people have died in the Syrian conflict since 2011, which has traumatized the Middle East, spilling into its neighbors, and provoked an exodus of refugees seeking safety in the European Union. While Islamic State controls as much as half of Syria, rebel militants trying to oust Assad backed by the U.S., Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar are also gaining ground.
A coalition led by the U.S to fight Islamic State isn’t coordinating its actions with Syria and hasn’t contacted the government since last year, according to Assad. “We’re fighting, if it’s possible to say, a common enemy, striking the same targets in the same places without any coordination,” Assad said.
Syria is ready to collaborate with Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, France, the U.S. and other states, if the countries focus on fighting terrorists and stop shielding them, according to Assad.

UK defense firm Selex ES on Tuesday unveiled an electromagnetic shield designed to defeat commercial drones.
After three years of development, Selex’s Falcon Shield system made its public debut during the Defence and Security Equipment International exhibition in London.
The firm did not explain in great detail the proprietary technology, which was developed with military customers, but said drones can be detected, taken over and then flown to land safely away from the target being protected.

Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris said he has identified two Greek islands that could be used to host Syrian refugees, and suggested setting up a joint-stock company to deal with the expected donations.
Sawiris, the chairman of Orascom Telecom Media and Technology Holding, has been in contact with the owners of the islands in hopes of moving ahead with the plan, according to a statement from his media office posted on his Facebook page late Monday. Sawiris said the talks would depend on whether the owners can secure approval from the Greek government.
The Egyptian billionaire had announced that he was interested in buying an island where refugees could be housed until they can return to their own country. In a Sept. 8 Bloomberg TV interview, Sawiris said the proposal was something motivated by a desire “to clear my conscience as a human being, and nothing more.”

He has come under fire from left-leaning media in the West, who lashed out at him after he stated his concern that most of the migrants entering his country were Muslim. He saidlast week: “If we lose sight of the European idea, [Christianity] can become, on its own continent, a minority.”
When asked about this, he doubled down, stating “the truth is that we are protecting our way of life”.
And according to him, the migrants are no longer “refugees”. They have, since leaving conflict zones, passed through a number of safe countries before reaching Hungary, and attempting to go further into Europe to places like Sweden and Germany.

Muslim exorcist stabbed to death at his black magic healing centre in east London
A ‘faith healer’ was stabbed to death at a black magic treatment centre.
Father-of-three Zakariyya Islam, 46, who specialised in expelling demons, was stabbed at the Ruqya Centre in east London last night.
The healer had worked as a exorcist for around 20 years and co-founded the Islamic therapy business which offers advice on sorcery, witchcraft and “evil eye”.
He treated people who believed they were were possessed by evil spirits, also known as ‘jinns.’
Police and paramedics rushed to the centre just after 6.30pm yesterday where he was found with critical injuries to his torso.
Syria’s Assad blames West for refugee crisis

BEIRUT (Reuters) – Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has blamed Europe’s refugee crisis on Western support for “terrorists”, as people fleeing his country’s civil war stream towards the European Union.
In his first public comments on the mass migration, broadcast on Wednesday, Assad said Europe could expect more refugees.
Countries including the United States, Turkey and Saudi Arabia want to see Assad gone from power and have supported the opposition to his rule during the four-year-old war, including some of the armed groups fighting him.
Assad said Turkish support had been crucial to the growth of two of the biggest insurgent groups in Syria, Islamic State and the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front, and aerial bombing by a U.S.-led coalition had failed to stop Islamic State. Turkey denies the accusation.

ISTANBUL (Reuters) – Authorities issued warrants against 11 executives and university officials in central Turkey on Wednesday in an operation targeting supporters of a U.S.-based cleric accused by President Tayyip Erdogan of plotting a coup, local media said.
The state-run Anadolu Agency said the move was aimed at the “parallel state structure”, which Erdogan accuses cleric Fethullah Gulen of operating in the ranks of the judiciary, police, media and education.
But the operation is likely to be seen by Erdogan’s critics as an attempt to squash opponents less than two months before a snap election where the AK Party he founded is seeking to win back a single-party majority.
The crackdown also comes amid daily deadly clashes in the southeast between militants of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and security forces, after a ceasefire collapsed in July.

As Russia and Iran move in more overtly on Syria, it’s important to understand that their objective is not to prop up a weak, dependent Bashar al-Assad. Doing that is a convenience. Assad functions now as a fig leaf for the real objective of his long-time patrons: establishing effective control of the territory of Syria.
The Western media will probably keep saying, by rote, that Russia and Iran are supporting Assad – just as they will keep saying that the U.S. coalition is battling Islamic State. But there’s a reason for the “why this summer; why right now” behind Russia’s seemingly sudden strategic move on Syria. And it’s not the superficial motives being attributed to Russia or Iran.
There are two interlocking catalysts for Russia’s decision to intervene actively, just at this moment. One is the U.S.-Turkey partnership “against ISIS,” which became active in late July, and immediately resulted in Turkey attacking not ISIS, but Kurds in Syria and Iraq.

Refugee story of the day from journalist Harold Doornbos in Dutch magazine “Nieuwe Revu”. “For a long time there is a rumour going around in Northern Syria that Sunni rebels have obtained a number of printers and thousands of blank passports from the Assad regime. According to these rumours, the rebels have started to print fake passports for anybody willing to pay the right price. “General Lloyd Austin, the commander of U.S. Central Command leading the war on ISIS, told Congress today that only “four or five” of the first 54 U.S.trained moderate Syrian fighters remain in the fight against ISIS.
Christine Wormuth, the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, also told the Senate Armed Services Committee that there are currently between 100 and 120 fighters in a program that was slated to have trained 5,400 fighters in its first 12 months.
Austin told the panel that goal was not going to be met and that options are being explored about how to retool the program which was intended to train moderate Syrian rebels to fight ISIS. So far, $42 million has been spent to develop the $500 million program which began training in April.
The first 54 graduates of the program were re-inserted into northern Syria in July and were quickly attacked by the Al Nusra Front, the dominant Islamist rebel group in Syria. Though the attack was repelled with U.S. airstrikes, it was characterized as a major setback for the viability of the progam. When Austin was asked how many trained fighters remained in the fight he responded “it’s a small number,” before adding “the ones that are in the fight, we’re talking four or five.”
Wormuth said the number of trainees in the program was “definitely smaller than expected” and attributed the low number of trainees to the stringent vetting standards being used by Centcom to prevent extremists from entering the program.
Highly critical of Austin and Wormuth’s presentation, Committee chairman Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) said that in his thirty years onn the committee “I have never heard testimony like this. … Never.”
“I have never seen a hearing that is as divorced from the reality of every outside expert and what you are saying,” McCain told Austin.
He said there was a “disconnect” between Austin’s appraisal of the fight against ISIS and Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who last week described the situation in Iraq as “a tactical stalemate.”

At the time of the Al Nusra attack on July 31 the initial team of 54 US trained fighters had already been split four ways by circumstances surrounding the Eid holiday that ended Ramadan in mid-July.
Already integrated into the large umbrella rebel group known as Division 30, the U.S. official said that the fighters were allowed to visit family members for the holiday. That included some who were in Syria or in refugee camps in Turkey.
That dispersion resulted in some of the fighters who went to visit Turkey being trapped there when Turkey closed its borders. Another group of fighters who visited family had not yet returned to their unit when the attack occurred.
A third group of fighters broke off from the main group to follow a leader who had chosen to fight Assad regime forces instead of ISIS.
Only a handful of the fighters had returned from the Eid holiday to rejoin Division 30 when they were attacked by the Al Nusra fighters. It was this group of fighters who called in five U.S. airstrikes to repel the attack…”

GREECE – TURKEY – Hundreds of migrants have demonstrated near Turkey’s western border with Greece, demanding that authorities allow them to cross the frontier. Many refuse the food being handed out by a Turkish relief organization and pledge to start a hunger strike until their demands are met.
The migrants, most of them refugees from Syria, have been gathering at the border since the beginning of the week, hoping they will be allowed to cross into Greece overland instead of risking their lives at sea.
Authorities have given the estimated 1,700 people there three days to leave the area, according to an official in the provincial governor’s office who provided the information on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record.
The AP saw several people leaving in vans back to Istanbul, but many more appeared ready to stay at the border for as long as it took.
“We are not going back,” Ahmed El Latif told the AP. “Either we all die here or we will go to Greece.”

Truth, director James Vanderbilt’s drama about the “Memogate” scandal that ended Dan Rather’s CBS News career, was touted as a world premiere at Toronto. Rather himself turned up at the event to praise the film’s accuracy and its (very sympathetic) portrayal of him.
But it turns out the movie was shown months earlier to a special viewer: CBS Corp. president and CEO Leslie Moonves. And the reaction was less than effusive.
CBS mostly comes across as the villain in Truth, with news chief Andy Heyward appearing to fire Rather (Robert Redford) and 60 Minutes producer Mary Mapes (Cate Blanchett) to appease the George W. Bush White House and protect CBS’ bottom line in the wake of questions regarding documents behind a 2004 story on Bush’s military service. The film downplays Rather’s role in the reporting that led to the scandal and suggests that the attacks on the 60 Minutes II report were politically motivated.
A source close to the film says Moonves wasn’t a fan of Truth, but, ever the gentleman, he didn’t ask producers for major changes, and a CBS source says the network isn’t planning to publicly lash out at Sony Pictures Classics’ Oct. 16 release (any challenge from those depicted would only provide more publicity for the film, of course).
Still, Moonves and staff were heard at CBS headquarters dismissing the movie as “half truth.” CBS declined to comment.
Half truth, that is being too kind, Rather and company faked documents to try and prove a rumor, the problem is that future generations will see the movie and think it is what really happened.

Secretary of State John Kerry said Russia has proposed military-to-military talks with the U.S. on Syria, according to an Associated Press news alert Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Kerry had his third phone call in 10 days with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Russia’s intentions in the region, according to the State Department.
“Kerry made clear that Russia’s continued support for [Syria’s] President Assad risks exacerbating and extending the conflict, and undermining our shared goal of fighting extremism if we do not also remain focused on finding a solution to the conflict in Syria via a genuine political transition,” the department said in a statement.

Samuel Hardy, 21, was freelancing at the Al-Quds Day rally in London in 2012 when he spotted the Islington North MP in the crowds.
His photo shows Mr Corbyn appearing relaxed and smiling, as a man walks past behind him carrying Hezbollah’s distinctive yellow and green flag.
“I was just listening to the speeches and taking some photos when I turned round and saw Jeremy Corbyn,” Mr Hardy told The Independent.
“He smiled at me and I took the photo, thinking it was framed quite nicely.

GERMANY – Ex-Stasi Agent Hired to Censor “Xenophobic” Facebook Posts
The German government and Facebook are working with an organization led by an ex-Stasi agent to oversee a new program that will identify “xenophobic” posts made on the social networking website and punish people who make them with fines and jail sentences.
The German Minister of Justice Heiko Maas met with Facebook this week to form a special task force that will work to remove comments from the website that “call for hatred” against migrants.
The organization will be overseen by Network Against Nazis (Netz gegen Nazis), a group led by left-wing activist Anetta Kahane.
Although Kahane now describes herself as an “anti-racist,” she was intimately involved in another dark period of German history, working as a Stasi informant under the codename “Victoria” from 1974-1982.
The Stasi, which liaised with the Soviet KGB, was the official secret police of the former Communist government of East Germany. Its role was to spy on the population and to use its vast network of informants to hunt down political dissidents. Numerous Stasi members were prosecuted for their crimes after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
Last week, Chancellor Angela Merkel vowed to tackle “racist” comments made on social media sites, describing them as “sedition” and demanding that Facebook take action.
“25 years after the German reunification, former DDR citizens, along with their West German brothers and sisters, are to be monitored by former Stasi cadres,” notes the German website PI News.
A report in Bild also confirms that ‘Network Against Nazis’, led by Kahane, will be involved in monitoring Facebook for “racist” and “xenophobic” comments, as well as “refugee-baiting” remarks.
Those found guilty will be hit with fines of around €5000 euros or 120 days in prison.
While European governments roll out the red carpet to potentially millions of future migrants, authorities are cracking down on dissent. Last week, an anti-migrant demonstration set to be held in Warsaw was banned on the grounds that it was “driven by out-of-place hatred.”
Anti-migrant sentiment is building across Europe, partly as a result of the mainstream media’s failure to report on the negative impact that the influx of unassimilated foreigners will bring, as is documented in the video below.

A Syria-based journalist for news magazine Nieuwe Revu has managed to obtain a forged Syrian passport and ID card with a photograph of prime minister Mark Rutte on it.
Harald Doornbos paid some €750 for the passport, which he was able to pick up from the forgers within 40 hours.
The fixer told Doornbos that he would be able to enter Cyprus with the passport, which was in the name of Malek Ramadan.
Doornbos said the aim of the exercise had not been to buy a forged passport featuring Rutte, but he had been asked to supply a name and photograph, so he opted for the prime minister.
‘If we are able to buy a good quality forged Syrian passport, so can Syria fighters… and jihadis,’ Doornbos said. ‘Then it is relatively simple for them to enter the EU unnoticed and commit terrorist attacks.’

Dutch journalist easily buys fake Syrian passport, says terrorists can do it too
A journalist working for a Dutch magazine had a fake Syrian passport ready for him in less than two days – with the picture of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands printed on it.
Reporter Harald Doornbos who is currently based in Syria and works for the Dutch Nieuwe Revu magazine said anyone – including jihadists and Syrians who have committed crimes against humanity and are banned from entering Europe, can easily do the same.
A forged passport and an ID card cost the journalist US $825, he said on Twitter. He only had to make a phone call to order the fake documents, and was able to pick them up all ready within 40 hours. The man was told he would be able to enter Cyprus with his newly obtained documents.
Both were under the fake name of Malek Ramadan, but had the photograph of the Dutch PM Mark Rutte printed on them. The journalist said it wasn’t an initial idea to have the picture of the high-ranking official on the document, he just opted for it when asked to supply a name and a photograph – which only shows you can have pretty much anything printed on “good quality” fake documents.
If we are able to buy a good quality forged Syrian passport, so can Syrian fighters… and jihadists,” Doornbos said, concluding that “then it is relatively simple for them to enter the EU unnoticed and commit terrorist attacks.”
According to Doornbos’s sources, the fighters illegally getting the same fake documents travel from ISIS- and Al-Qaeda-controlled areas in northern Syria to Bodrum in Turkey, and illegally crossing over to Greece from there.
In Greece, he shows his false Syrian passport to the authorities. Since the passport is fake, under the fake name, the Greeks have no idea that they are not dealing with a Syrian refugee but a member of ISIS or Al-Qaeda,” Nieuwe Revu wrote, adding that from Greece such illegal travelers proceed to Hungary through Macedonia and Serbia, and then “travel without control to the other Schengen States.”
Concerns that jihadist fighters could be sneaking in to Europe during the ongoing migrant crisis, disguised as asylum seekers, have grown recently, as tens of thousands of people continue to arrive to Europe from the Middle East, and Syria in particular. Even Pope Francis warned of the danger of ISIS “infiltration” via refugee flows this week, saying that the fighters may take advantage of the situation to slip into EU undetected.
