Libyan military shells Turkish cargo ship, crew member killed
Forces loyal to Libya’s internationally recognized government said on Monday they shelled a Turkish ship off the Libyan coast after it was warned not to approach, and one crew member was killed in what Turkey described as a “contemptible attack”.
Libya is in a state of violent factional chaos with two rival governments backed by various armed groups vying for control of the oil-producing North African state including its ports, four years after rebels overthrew Muammar Gaddafi.
The dry cargo ship was targeted about 10 miles from the coast on Sunday after it was told not to break a ban on approaching the eastern city of Derna, Libyan military spokesman Mohamed Hejazi told Reuters.
The forces of Libya’s internationally recognized government have said they will hit any ships approaching Derna to stop supplies getting to Islamist militants based there.
The Turkish foreign ministry said the vessel was shelled as it approached the nearby Mediterranean port of Tobruk and then attacked from the air as it tried to leave the area.
“We condemn strongly this contemptible attack which targeted a civilian ship in international waters and curse those who carried it out,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that Ankara had protested to the authorities in Libya.
The third officer on the Cook Islands-chartered Tuna-1 vessel died and other crew members were wounded in the attacks, according to the Turkish statement.
It did not specify the assailants, but said the vessel was carrying plasterboard from Spain to Tobruk and was 21 km (13 miles) from its destination when it came under fire.
Hejazi confirmed that one crew member was killed and said one other person was wounded.
A Libyan military source said the vessel was on fire and being towed to Tobruk terminal. But a Turkish foreign ministry official denied this, saying it was returning to Turkey.
“Turkey approached the United Nations and the IMO (International Maritime Organization) in connection with the matter. A note was given to Libya’s Ankara embassy and Istanbul consulate seeking an explanation,” the Turkish official said.
Internationally recognized Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni said in February his government would stop dealing with Turkey because it was sending weapons to a rival group in Tripoli so that “the Libyan people kill each other”.
Turkey denies taking sides in the conflict, saying it supports U.N.-led efforts to broker a peace.
A Libyan warplane from forces loyal to Thinni’s government bombed a Greek-operated oil tanker anchored off Libya’s coast in January, killing two crewmen, amid hostilities between factions vying for power.
Attacks on foreign ships in waters near Libya may complicate European Union efforts to stop traffickers sending thousands of migrants to Europe in often unseaworthy vessels.
Thousands have drowned in the voyage and several EU nations have sent naval vessels to the region to try to stem the migrant influx. But Libyan officials have warned against any measure perceived as an attack on the country’s sovereignty.

Stage collapses under 80-person choir in China
Eight Chinese choristers were rushed to hospital after the stage on which their 80-member choir collapsed mid-song.
The chorus, made up of local police officials, was rehearsing for a singing contest in the city of Bijie in Guizhou province on Saturday afternoon when the incident happened.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — The Indonesian navy says it turned away a boat packed with hundreds of Rohingya Muslims that reached Indonesian waters. The passengers were instead given food, water and directions to neighboring Malaysia.
Indonesia’s navy spokesman First Adm. Manahan Simorangkir says the fishing vessel entered from the Malacca Strait early Monday morning.
He said the migrants were trying to reach Malaysia and that the people looked fine and the boat was cramped but in good condition.

SYRIA – All-out battle in Qalamoun has not yet started
BEIRUT: An all-out military confrontation in the Qalamoun mountains has not yet begun despite the ongoing clashes pitting Hezbollah and the Syrian army against Islamist militants, a senior source familiar with military developments in the region said Sunday.
Although Hezbollah and Syrian troops have made major military gains since they began the campaign in Syria’s Qalamoun region last week, including seizing strategic hills and taking control of Assal al-Ward and Al-Juba, “the circumstances are not yet conducive for an all-out battle,” the source told The Daily Star.
The source pointed out that ISIS, whose militants are entrenched on the rugged outskirts of the northeastern town of Arsal, some 6 kilometers away from the theater of military operations, has not so far joined the battle.
Summing up the ongoing fighting in Qalamoun between Hezbollah and Syrian troops and rebels led by the Nusra Front, Syria’s Al-Qaeda affiliate, the source said: “What is happening now is a gradual nibbling of the [Qalamoun] hills and moving forward with steady steps.”
According to the source, Hezbollah’s attack in Qalamoun has foiled the militants’ strategic goal to cut off the Beirut-Damascus highway, which is “an extremely important and sensitive point for the Syrian regime and Hezbollah because it is a vital lifeline between the Lebanese and Syrian capitals.”

It is painful to learn that in the late 1990s, there were students at MIT who helped recruit for the Chechen jihad and raised funds for Al Qaeda-affiliated groups operating in the Tsarnaevs’ homeland. ITALY – Venice officials threaten to close mosque installation at Biennale art fair
Catholic authorities say that they should have been consulted over the initiative, even though the church was deconsecrated 45 years ago and has been privately owned since 1973.
“For any use other than Christian worship, authorisation must be sought from the ecclesiastical authorities, regardless of who is the owner of the church. Such authorisation, for this site, was neither requested nor granted,” the Patriarchate, or diocese, of Venice said in a statement.
Venice council has said that unless the correct permits can be produced by the artists behind the installation, it will be closed down by May 20.
A right-wing party, Fratelli d’Italia, has protested outside the temporary mosque and an Italian visitor refused to remove his shoes, arguing that if it was really just an art installation and not a proper mosque then he had no obligation to do so.
Luigi Brugnaro, a prominent businessman who is campaigning to be Venice’s next mayor, said the mosque was a “mistaken initiative which was done without taking into account people’s feelings in Venice”.

“Prosecutors in Macedonia say they have charged 30 people with terrorism-related offences following deadly clashes in the northern town of Kumanovo.
Some have also been charged with illegally possessing arms and explosives, a statement quoted by AFP news agency said.
Eight police officers and 14 gunmen were killed in the weekend clashes.
On Sunday, Macedonia said the armed group had been led by five Kosovans.
The interior ministry said they were members of the now dismantled Kosovo Liberation Army.
The state-run Macedonian News Agency (MIA) reported on Monday that 18 of those being held are Kosovo nationals; 11 are Macedonian citizens, two of whom are living in Kosovo, and one is an Albanian national who had been living in Germany.
Authorities say the group had been preparing attacks against civilians and “strategic targets”.
“The suspects have been accused of terrorism, jeopardising constitutional order and security,” the prosecutor’s office was quoted as saying.
A court in the capital Skopje ordered the 30 to be detained for 30 days, the MIA reported.
The violence followed an incident in April in which about 40 ethnic Albanians from Kosovo briefly took over a police station in the Macedonian village of Gosince, demanding the creation of an Albanian state within Macedonia.
About a quarter of Macedonia’s population of two million are ethnic Albanians….”
