  1. Palestinian Authority rejects Israel tax transfer (BBC, Apr 6, 2015)

“Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas says he has refused to accept hundreds of millions of dollars of tax revenues unfrozen by Israel.

Mr Abbas says he returned the money because Israel deducted a third to cover unpaid Palestinian utility debts.

He has threatened to take Israel to the International Criminal Court (ICC) unless the full amount is released.

Israel collects taxes on behalf of the Palestinian Authority (PA), but suspended payments in January.

It froze the transfers in protest at the Palestinians joining the ICC.

Palestinian membership began on 1 April, giving them the option to pursue Israel for alleged war crimes.

Israel says it has deducted the cost of unpaid services provided to the Palestinian population, including electricity, water and hospital bills….”

“Bangladesh’s Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has turned down a petition by an Islamic party official and upheld his death sentence for war crimes. The decision was made Monday by a four-member panel headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha against Mohammad Qamaruzzaman, an assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami party. It was the last legal roadblock to his execution. If he seeks presidential clemency and is rejected, he will be executed soon after….”

  3. Report: Iran Kills Fighters Linked to ‘Foreign Intelligence’ (abcnews, Apr 6, 2015)

“Iran’s official news agency is reporting that the country’s powerful Revolutionary Guard has broken up a militant group linked to a “foreign intelligence” agency and killed its members.

The report Monday by IRNA did not identify the terrorist group, nor give any casualty figures. The report said the Guard confiscated a large amount of weapons and communication equipment from the militant group.

It said the raid happened in Iran’s southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchistan near the Pakistani border. The area has been scene of occasional clashes between Iranian forces and militants groups believed to be affiliated with al-Qaida.

Iran from time to time announces similar claims about breaking up militant groups.”

  4. Malaysia Detains 17 People Suspected of Plotting Terror Acts (abcnews, Apr 6, 2015)

“Malaysia’s police chief says 17 suspected militants have been detained for allegedly plotting to carry out terrorist acts in the country’s largest city, Kuala Lumpur.

Inspector General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar says the 17 people were detained Sunday. Khalid tweeted on Monday that two of them had just returned from Syria. No further details were immediately available.

The government has detained scores of Malaysians believed to be supporters of the Islamic State militant group. Last month, the home ministry proposed two new anti-terror laws that will reintroduce indefinite detention without trial and allow the seizure of passports of anyone suspected of supporting terror acts to curb militant activities in the country.

Critics, however, say the new laws as a return of oppressive policies that will curb civil liberties.”

After four years at the helm of Fryeburg Academy’s boys lacrosse team, Scott Lees of Conway said he was forced by academy officials to resign as head coach after sharing on Facebook an open letter to President Barack Obama that was unflattering to Muslims.

The letter, written by “An American Citizen,” was about Obama’s speech given in Cairo in 2009. In that speech and in another made last month, the president said Islam has long been a part of American history.

  8. PAKISTAN – Gul Ahmad Saeed Accused of Killing 14 in Pakistan Over Marriage Wrangle

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — A Pakistani man is suspected of killing his fiancé and nine of her relatives after the woman’s family appeared reluctant to give her permission to marry, police said on Monday.

The 25-year-old suspect, who police identified as Gul Ahmad Saeed, had been on the run since murdering his parents, brother and sister-in-law earlier this year when they obstructed the marriage.

On Sunday, he returned to his town in northwest Pakistan and, with some accomplices, shot dead his fiance, her parents and seven of her siblings, after an uncle had raised his opposition to the marriage, police said.

“The uncle was being very indecisive about the wedding which infuriated Gul Ahmad,” said police officer Mohammad Jamil.

Police were searching for the suspects but they were believed to have fled into the semi-autonomous Pashtun tribal area along the Afghan border where government authorities hold little sway and police are not legally permitted to go.

The killings took place in a deeply conservative area where women there are often discouraged from going to school and have little choice when it comes to marriage. Pakistani women are often killed by men who feel their honor has been offended in some way.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan reported that 869 women were murdered in so-called honor killings in 2013, the last year for which data is available.

  10. MECCA – New gold grand mosque kaaba door to cost $3.6m

Saudi Arabia will spend $3.6 million renovating the door of the kaaba at the grand mosque in Makkah, Islam’s holiest site, local media have reported.

The kaaba is a sacred cubic box inside the mosque where Muslim pilgrims commonly repent their sins.

Made from heavy gold, it is more than 3 metres high and features 15 of the 99 names of allah embroidered in gold and silver thuluth (an Arabic calligraphy style), according to the Makkah Daily.

At the centre, koranic verses, Islamic phrases and historical annotations are inscribed; even the door’s lock is embroidered. Only the best and most prestigious designers and calligraphers have worked on the kaaba door.

According to the report, the kaaba door was first renovated during the reign of king Abdulaziz, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, in 1944. Its second renovation was during the reigns of king Khalid and king Fahd.

In 1977, king Khalid noticed scratches at the bottom of the door while he was praying inside the grand mosque and immediately ordered for the door to be remade and for a tobah (which means repentance) door to be installed inside the k aaba and coated with gold.

The kingdom is spending more than $20 billion renovating and expanding the site so it can accommodate two million pilgrims at one time.

    • There are strengths and weakness to systems like this, the main strength is the way they are force multipliers for groups/nations with limited populations. The main weakness is the growing tech usage by our enemies, any remotely controlled machine is subject to being taken over by your enemy and being used against you.

        • Remember the MAD magazine spy v spy, the tech defense and offense against RPVs will continue for as long as we use them. The one thing we need to remember is that or enemies have some very smart people among them and they can learn to break and defense.

  11. Washington Post – The hidden hand behind the Islamic State militants? Saddam Hussein’s.

CONFRONTING THE ‘CALIPHATE’| This is part of an occasional series about the militant group Islamic State and its violent collision with the United States and others intent on halting the group’s rapid rise.

[…]All of the men, however, were former Iraqi officers who had served under Saddam Hussein, including the masked man, who had once worked for an Iraqi intelligence agency and now belonged to the Islamic State’s own shadowy security service, he said.

Even with the influx of thousands of foreign fighters, almost all of the leaders of the Islamic State are former Iraqi officers, including the members of its shadowy military and security committees, and the majority of its emirs and princes, according to Iraqis, Syrians and analysts who study the group.

They have brought to the organization the military expertise and some of the agendas of the former Baathists, as well as the smuggling networks developed to avoid sanctions in the 1990s and which now facilitate the Islamic State’s illicit oil trading.
