1. Canada: Extremist links to Muslim Students Association not new; group has been monitored for years

MONTREAL — Eleven of Canada’s highest-profile jihadi terrorists, terror suspects and alleged extremists have ties to the Muslim Students Association, a security conference has heard.

The data was presented on Thursday evening by the Canadian Military Intelligence Association in Ottawa, where three men were charged Tuesday with terrorism-related offences.

Suspect Awso Peshdary, 25, was an invited speaker of the Muslim Students Association at Ottawa’s Algonquin College last year. He’s accused of financing efforts to send recruits from Canada to Syria to join the Islamic State.

A second man, Khadar Khalib, 23, was a member of the same MSA and the third suspect, John Maguire, 24, attended MSA events at the University of Ottawa. The latter two are believed to be in Syria.

3. Islington girls forced into marriage at the age of nine

AN alarming number of under-age girls – some as young as nine – are being forced into marriage in Islington, according to a leading campaign group.

The Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation (IKWRO) claim that at least 30 girls in the borough  were forced into marriage in 2010. […]

In most cases, the children fear they will be killed if they reveal the truth to anybody, while others believe they will be separated from their families and taken into social services’ care.

Dianna Nammi, director of IKWRO, explained that the girls are married in a mosque’s sharia court. This means they are not legally married according to British law, rendering the Home Office unable to recognise or prove the abuse.

“They are still expected to carry out their wifely duties, though, and that includes sleeping with their husband,” she said.

“They have to cook for them, wash their clothes, everything. They are still attending schools in Islington, struggling to do their primary school homework, and at the same time being practically raped by a middle-aged man regularly and being abused by their families. So they are a wife, but in a primary school uniform

4. Girl cadets threatened with BEHEADING by two men as they left an Army Reserve Centre

Police have mounted uniformed patrols around an Army Reserve after two girl cadets were threatened with beheading as they left the centre.

Two men had shouted the violent threats as they drove past the teenage cadets, who weren’t in uniform at the time.

The pair, driving in a Vauxhall Zafira, were said to have asked the girls if they were in the army before threatening them with beheading.

It comes weeks after British police forces warned officers not to wear uniforms on the way to work after an ISIS-style plot to kidnap and behead an officer.

5. ISIS beheads four Syrians who took to Facebook to condemn burning Jordanian pilot to death… and has two Muslim clerics who also criticised the murder shot by firing squad

ISIS militants have executed six people, including two Muslim clerics, for condemning the horrific execution of the Jordanian pilot Moaz al-Kasasbeh.

Al-Kasasbeh, a fighter pilot captured in Syria in December when his plane went down during a bombing mission, was burned alive and footage of his execution was released online.

Two Imams where shot and four civilians were beheaded in Mosul, Iraq, the largest city controlled by the so-called Islamic State in Syria, local media reports.

Thank you UK Pete, MaLe., Tasha Carr, and all who sent in materials. More to come.

  1. Turkey pulls out of Munich conference to avoid Israeli delegation

Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Friday pulled out of a security conference in Munich at the last minute, saying he did not wish to attend a joint session with an Israeli delegation.

[…]”I was going to attend the conference but we decided not to after they added Israeli officials to the Middle East session at the last minute,” Cavusoglu told a news conference in Berlin, where he has been meeting Turkish ambassadors based in Europe.

  2. Uruguay expels Iran diplomat over bomb scare

Uruguay has expelled a senior Iranian diplomat over last month’s planting of a dummy bomb near Israel’s embassy in Montevideo, Israeli daily Haaretz reported on Friday.

Citing an unidentified “senior official in Jerusalem”, it said the diplomat was expelled two weeks ago and although Uruguayan officials briefed Israel on the move they made no public announcement.

“Investigations carried out by Uruguay’s intelligence services after the discovery of the device yielded information pointing to a possible involvement of someone at the Iranian embassy,” Haaretz’s diplomatic correspondent wrote.

“The Uruguayan government turned to Iran’s government for information and after consultations between the two, it was decided to expel one of the senior diplomats at Iran’s embassy.”

On January 8, Montevideo bomb squad officers detonated what turned out to be a fake bomb near the Israeli embassy, located in the World Trade Centre office complex in the city.

The convincing-looking fake — complete with fuse, detonator and other elements found in a real bomb — was detected some 70 metres (230 feet) from the building by bomb-sniffing dogs.

After destroying the device, bomb brigade Lieutenant Colonel Alfredo Larramendi told reporters that it “never posed any danger” but might have been part of a dress rehearsal for the real thing.

“It might have been put there to see the response time” of responders, or to size up the quality of the security of Israel’s embassy,” Larramendi said.

[…] Secret audio recordings of those conversations are being played at trial while the officer testifies.

“Islam is a monster, is a beast,” Jaser is heard saying on one intercepted conversation. “Islam is a very powerful weapon, OK, and if it’s in the right hands…then you can bulldoze the whole world.”

[…]The discussion on religious beliefs came just a day after the full extent of the alleged train plot, as well as a “long-term” plan to use a sniper to attack leaders in Canadian society,

[…] As the trio sat under a gazebo sipping tea and grazing on Timbits, Jaser talked of his desire to have Shariah or Islamic law imposed in Canada to stop the “wickedness” that exists in Western society.

“Islam is here to conquer,” he is heard saying. “There is no live and let live in Islam.”

  5. Channel 4’s Cathy Newman apologises for ‘misunderstanding’ over mosque

Presenter sparked row with Twitter claim that she was ‘ushered out of the door’ of Islamic centre in south London

Channel 4 News presenter Cathy Newman has apologised for “any misunderstanding” over her ill-fated visit to a mosque in south London.

Newman hit the headlines after she tweeted on Sunday saying that she was “ushered out of” the South London Islamic Centre in Streatham.

Newman said in a statement that she had visited the wrong mosque, turning up at the South London Islamic Centre – which she said has had death threats following coverage of her visit – “in error.”

Newman said in a statement: “As the primary purpose of Visit My Mosque day was to increase understanding of Islam, I was horrified to hear the mosque I visited in error has had death threats. I’m sorry for any misunderstanding there has been. I would be happy to pay a private visit to South London Islamic Centre once again.”

The South London Islamic Centre chair of trustees Mohammed, Aslam Ijaz, said that having looked into the matter the centre thought a man who is shown pointing Newman away from the building thought she had said she was looking for a church.

He therefore gestured towards a neighbouring christian church two doors down called The English Martyrs.

However, Ijaz said that despite the misunderstanding and the centre receiving a threat, which local police had looked into, Newman was welcome to make a return visit.[…]

  6. NYT – ISIS Claims U.S. Captive Died in Jordanian Airstrike

The Islamic State claimed Friday that the Jordanian bombings in northern Syria intended to avenge its immolation of a captured pilot had killed an American woman held hostage by the group.

An Islamic State message published by the SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks jihadist activity, said the American woman was killed when the building where she was being held in the Raqqa area collapsed in an airstrike.

“The failed Jordanian aircraft killed an American female hostage,” said the message. “No mujahid was injured in the bombardment, and all praise is due to Allah.” Mujahid means fighter.

The woman, the only remaining American hostage held by the Islamic State, disappeared in August of last year after she drove into Aleppo with her Syrian boyfriend. Her colleagues received a proof-of-life video a few months later, showing her wearing a hijab and begging for her life.

  7. Guardian editor accuses George Galloway of fueling antisemitism

What’s remarkable about the Feb. 5th episode of BBC’s Question Time (from Finchley in north London) is not only that senior Guardian editor Jonathan Freedland criticizes George Galloway for using rhetoric which fuels antisemitism, but that Galloway then proceeds to lash out at the entire British Jewish community.

    The entire video is riveting.
