1. India: Pakistani Agencies Backing Terror Groups

India’s home minister hit out at Pakistan on Saturday, accusing its state agencies of using terror to try to destabilize India, and rejecting Pakistan’s assertion that non-state actors are involved in terrorism.
“Pakistan is continuously engaged in destabilizing India, but says non-state actors are behind the acts of terror. I want to ask Pakistan if its Inter-Services Intelligence is also a non-state actor,” Rajnath Singh said, referring to Pakistan’s national intelligence agency.
Singh, the second-most powerful official in India after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was addressing the heads of Indian police, paramilitary and intelligence agencies who were meeting in Guwahati, the main city in the remote northeastern state of Assam.

3. Ebola outbreak: West Africa death toll nears 7,000
(It seems that even without media, Ebola continues on unabated)
Experts say the infection rate is more significant that the death toll, as it reflects how the virus is spreading.
Infection rates are decreasing in Liberia, but are high in Sierra Leone.
There have been over 16,000 reported cases in Guinea, Sierra and Liberia.
4. Geert Wilders: “Our Countries Are Waking Up”
Geert Wilders, the leader of the Party for Freedom (Partij voor de Vrijheid, PVV) in the Netherlands, spoke today at a meeting of the Front National in France. Below is the prepared text of his remarks (my translation). The original French text is at the bottom of this post.
Speech by Geert Wilders
Before the Congress of the National Front (Lyon, November 29, 2014)
Ladies and Gentlemen, Friends,
I am very pleased to be here today in Lyon, the capital of the French Resistance. It is a privilege to address this gathering of French patriots in the presence of my friend, Marine Le Pen, the next President of France! My party, the Party for Freedom, is, according to surveys, the largest party in the Netherlands. And your party, the National Front, is, according to the polls, the top party in France.
The future is ours! The future belongs to the patriots of Europe! Because the peoples of Europe have had enough of betrayal by the multicultural elites who destroy our identities and our traditions. Of these hypocrites who squander our wealth and shackle our prosperity, endangering the future of our children.
5. Enslaved and exploited for Allah
A virgin is worth $100 on the slave market; a mother only $10 • Women are forced to convert to Islam and then turned into sex slaves • Thousands of Kurdish and Yazidi women held by Islamic State are learning that modern slavery is alive and kicking.

Every evening, silence reigns in the Khanke refugee camp, close to the Kurdish city of Dohuk in northern Iraq. Winter has already arrived, bringing with it rain, mud and cold.
Although a fire has been lit for warmth, it is potentially dangerous. A Yazidi family — men, women, elderly people and children — is crowded into each tent. The tents afford no protection from the rain, and if any should catch fire, they would immediately turn into death traps. About 60,000 Yazidis — adherents of an ancient faith that contains elements of Sufism, Kharijism and Zoroastrianism and Kurdish by culture and language — live in this camp. Last summer they managed to survive and escape from Mount Sinjar, which had been taken over by the Islamic State group. Every person at the camp knows someone who has been killed or wounded or is missing. Every person has a sister, wife or daughter who was kidnapped and raped.
6. Islamic State: Syria says air strikes not hurting group
Two months of US-led air strikes have failed to weaken Islamic State (IS) militants, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem has said. A US-led coalition has carried out nearly 300 air strikes in Syria since September.
Mr Moualem told Lebanese TV the only way to tackle IS was to force Turkey to tighten border controls to stop foreign fighters crossing into Syria. IS controls large swathes of both Syria and neighbouring Iraq.
The BBC’s Jim Muir says the air strikes have been widely credited with helping to halt the advance of IS fighters on the border town of Kobane in northern Syria.
Losing ground
“All the indications say that [IS] today, after two months of coalition air strikes, is not weaker,” Mr Moulame told al-Mayadeen TV on Friday.
7. ‘They are attacking from four sides’: Activists say ISIS moves to Kobani from Turkey
(Video at site)
BEIRUT – The Islamic State group launched an attack Saturday on the Syrian border town of Kobani from Turkey, a Kurdish official and activists said, although Turkey denied that the fighters had used its territory for the raid.
The assault began when a suicide bomber driving an armored vehicle detonated his explosives on the border crossing between Kobani and Turkey, said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Nawaf Khalil, a spokesman for Syria’s powerful Kurdish Democratic Union Party.

Here are some notes on something called The well-spoken thesaurus: the most powerful ways to say everyday words and phrases (Tom Heehler, 2011). Essentially it is a guide to sounding like an upper-class twit. Don’t say a bit, say rather. Instead of a bit of, use a remnant of. Eschew a certain something for je ne sais quoi (French, zhuh nuh say KWAH). Rather as if you parle Francais.
One might imagine that such a book would be aimed squarely at crass arriviste bourgeois social climbers looking to mask embarrassing working class associations by acquiring or honing more pretentious speech. But another audience is suggested in the opening lines.
‘Words are like little gods. The pronoun “him” instead of “her,” if used often enough, can dissuade a girl from science or math.’
More sensitive, socially-conscious, gender-neutral souls may also feel the need to distinguish themselves from the Great Unwashed.
‘It’s not enough to replace ordinary words with the extraordinary words contained within this book. You need to know why these words are extraordinary, and the best way to do this is to examine the language of history’s greatest writers and speakers, verbal alchemists like Margaret Atwood, Ernest Hemingway, T. S. Eliot, and Barack Obama.’
T. S. Eliot and Barack Obama?
Lesson 16 – Barack Obama: Eloquence and Power
‘Think about it: The leader of the free world, arguably the most powerful person on this planet, is also among the most eloquent public speakers of the twenty-first century. Coincidence?’
You be the judge. But what is the evidence of Obama’s literary genius, that sets it on a par with that of the author of ‘The Waste Land?’ and ‘Four Quartets?’ Three examples are offered, including this from Dreams from My Father.
What someone without great gifts would write: ‘I enjoyed those moments—but only briefly.’
What Barack Obama’s ghost writer wrote: ‘I enjoyed such moments—but only in brief.’
In contradistinction (well-spoken word!) to Barack Obama’s powerful eloquence, Heehler gives us Glenn Beck’s ‘craftiness’ (one of the ‘Seven Deadly Rhetorical Sins’).
‘I think I know who you are. After September 11, 2001, you thought our country had changed for the better. But the months that followed proved otherwise. We began to divide ourselves and the partisan bickering that had been absent from blood donor lines and church services started all over again.’
Heehler writes, ‘From this, the opening paragraph to Common Sense, if you didn’t know any better you would think that Glenn Beck was sorry to see our country divided. But don’t be fooled. Propagandists crave division, and come well versed in language designed to sow it. They exploit our fear of terrorists, our suspicion of science, our resentment of the “edumacated,” and our bias against other cultures, religions, races, and nationalities.’
Thankfully we have the example of Barack Obama (who does none of those things) against which to measure our foolish and inadequate words and to true our moral compasses.
‘Tom Heehler is a degree student at the Harvard University Extension School.’
The Harvard University Extension School is not to be confused with Harvard.
That’s encouraging! I guess.
INDONESIA – 2,000 nails removed from Muslim woman’s body
An Indonesian surgeon made a case for Islamic therapy to complement modern medicine at hospitals by showing rusty nails pulled out from the body of a female patient, supposedly a victim of sorcery.
[…]after consulting his colleagues and religious teachers, he decided to use complementary Islamic therapy to treat the patient. Dr Sagiran said he started reciting verses from the Quran while dressing her wounds or whenever she was in pain, adding that this caused her to throw up.
[…]the case illustrated the need for a holistic approach, including spiritual and religious treatment, at hospitals.
[…]Islamic complementary therapy can be used to treat patients whose illnesses cannot be diagnosed,” he said.
Dr Supyan said Islamic therapy had nothing to do with black magic or witchcraft which was against Islam.

CANADA – Winnipeggers call on Canadians to take stand against extremism
Winnipeggers gathered Saturday for a discussion on how to help the besieged Syrian city of Kobani.
[…]Organizers want Canada to send humanitarian aid.
On Friday, Winnipeg Muslims spoke out against ISIS and terrorists who give the Islamic faith a bad reputation.
The Manitoba Islamic Association opened the doors of a mosque for a public tour Friday evening called Not in Our Name and afterwards held an open forum.
Organizers say Canadians have questions and fears following the recent attacks in Ottawa and Quebec, but they want to debunk any myths about Islam
“Islam is an empowering, peaceful faith,” Idris Elbakri, president of the Manitoba Islamic Association.“Muslims contribute to society in a variety of positive ways and there may be people who show extreme ideologies, but they do not represent the faith, they are on the fringes of the faith.”

Canadian-Israeli woman reportedly kidnapped by ISIS
A Canadian-Israeli woman who joined Kurdish fighters battling Islamic State militants earlier this month has been kidnapped by the group, Israeli media reported Sunday morning.
Gill Rosenberg’s kidnapping was reported by The Jerusalem Post as well as ynetnews.com, the English-language edition of Ynet, Israel’s largest and most popular news website.
“The reports began surfacing on jihadi and Palestinian social media and forums, and claim Rosenberg was taken while fighting with the Peshmerga forces in Kobani, Syria,” ynetnews.com said on its site.
The Post said that in an interview with Israel Radio in early November, Rosenberg said she had decided to join the fighters for humanitarian and ideological reasons and “because they are our brothers” who are fighting Islamic State.

Canadian man stabbed in Saudi Arabia, report says
The official Saudi Press Agency says a Saudi man has stabbed a Canadian citizen while he shopped in a mall with his family in the country’s oil-rich Eastern Province.
The news agency, quoting a police spokesman, says the victim was transferred to a hospital Saturday afternoon. Police say they have arrested the Saudi man and are investigating the motive for the attack.
The attack comes one week after a gunman shot a Danish citizen in his car in the capital, Riyadh.
Al-Qaeda has attacked foreigners in Saudi Arabia in the past. The breakaway Islamic State in Iraq and Syria group has urged its supporters to launch attacks inside the kingdom
Canada, Denmark and Saudi Arabia are members of the U.S.-led coalition conducting airstrikes against ISIS fighters.

# 8 Malta –
Performing arts association calls for removal of V18 artistic director
The Association of Performing Arts Practitioners calls on the Valletta 2018 Foundation to reconsider the appointment of Mario Philip Azzopardi as Artistic Director after an anti-Islamic rant by Azzopardi was highlighted in the local media.
The Association of Performing Arts Practitioners (APAP) has called on the Valletta 2018 Foundation to reconsider the appointment of Mario Philip Azzopardi as Artistic Director, after a vitriolic anti-Islamic rant was brought to the attention of the local media.
In a Facebook status by Azzopardi last August – months before his V18 post was announced – the theatre and film director lashed out against Sharia law, claiming that all Muslims by proxy follow the same law and that it is only those who refuse it that deserve to ‘join our club’. Azzopardi went on to say that he would make sure that any ‘idiot’ who follows Sharia law should not attain any political power, ‘at the risk of using violence against him’.
In a statement, APAP expressed its satisfaction that both the Fondazzjoni Valletta 2018 and the Minister of Culture, Owen Bonnici, have disassociated themselves from Azzopardi’s remarks.
In a statement released yesterday, Azzopardi said he is sorry that any of his comments are taken as slights against cultural diversity and stressed that he has participated in projects in the past that not only involved people from various cultures, but that also sought to celebrate the idea of cultural diversity in all its forms.
“While APAP understands that the remarks expressed by Azzopardi were made in his personal capacity, the association nonetheless feels that these remarks do not fit well with his proposed role as Artistic Director of the Valletta 2018 project. V18 is a major international event which is specifically entrusted with the task of promoting cultural diversity, as well as reflecting the various aspects of the Mediterranean culture, and which aims to bring about change and understanding within society through creativity and dialogue.
The association felt that Azzopardi’s comments as made on a public forum, “repeatedly and with much vigour,” make him inadequate to fulfil the Foundation’s ambition.
Speaking to MaltaToday last June, Valletta 2018 Chairman Jason Micallef stressed that combating racial prejudice is one of the Foundation’s key aims.
“I think bringing people together has been one of the Foundation’s greater successes. Diversity and tolerance are important aspects of what Valletta 2018 is about.”
“APAP is concerned that Malta risks losing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fast track the development and professionalisation of the cultural industry sector if bad choices are made at this crucial stage, and that such choices should be made in continuous consultation with the sector itself. It is therefore calling on the Government, the Minister of Culture and the Foundation to reconsider this appointment,” APAP said in their statement.
As European Capital for Culture of 2018, Valletta – as well as the whole of Malta – will strive to become a year-long hub for culture and the arts.

Al Qaeda plot to blow up 5 passenger planes in Christmas ‘spectacular’
The threat has been taken so seriously it came close to leading to an outright ban on all hand luggage, a senior insider has revealed.
Mobile phones and electronic devices could still be banned from plane cabins, with the threat of a 9/11-style coordinated attack on London and other major cities feared imminent.
The warning comes as Whitehall officials admit that a terror strike on the UK is now “almost inevitable” particularly with British jihadis returning from fighting alongside the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
An airport security source told the Sunday Express: “We’ve been told that five planes are being targeted in a high profile hit before Christmas. They’ve been waiting for the big one.
“We have many scares but this one nearly got hand baggage pulled from all airlines. The threat is still alive and real.”
The plot, which has been known about for the past two months, is thought to involve Islamists smuggling bombs on to planes bound for major European destinations before Christmas.
The well-placed security insider said talks had been held about how to deal with it, with suggestions made to ban hand luggage.
The source said: “High level negotiations are continuing at Governmental level but at the moment there has been little done to respond.
“There is paralysis because of the difficulty of banning hand luggage which is one of the strongest weapons we have against the new threats.
“All electronics may be banned from hand luggage and placed in the hold, that has been considered, and there has been behaviour analysis training at airports but while it’s effective, it’s difficult to roll out quickly and is not a sufficient safety net.
“The threat is aimed at Europe. The U.S has improved their security over the summer but we have not.
“Everyone is expecting something catastrophic very soon”.
