Islamic State militants have executed Syrian army soldiers and are holding a group hostage after capturing an air base in northeast Syria at the weekend, pictures posted on social media by supporters showed on Wednesday.
Islamic State, an offshoot of al Qaeda, stormed Tabqa air base near Raqqa city on Sunday after days of fighting with the army that cost more than 500 lives, according to monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Tabqa was the army’s last foothold in an area otherwise controlled by the militants, who have seized large areas of Syria and Iraq. The United States has carried out air strikes on the group in Iraq and is considering its options in Syria.
In one picture posted online, a group of militants in balaclavas are seen gunning down at least seven kneeling men identified as army personnel. It was not possible to immediately confirm the authenticity of the images.

“Measures similar to control orders should be re-introduced to tackle the threat from Britons who fight with militants in Syria and Iraq, the UK’s most senior police officer has said.
The orders were replaced in 2011 by less restrictive measures but Met Police chief Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said the “drum beat has changed”.
He also told LBC radio he would back a call to seize passports from jihadists.
The home secretary has already proposed changes to the law to tackle extremism.
Control orders, under which ministers could sign an order placing a suspect under close supervision. were scrapped and replaced with Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures (TPims).
Sir Bernard said “something like” control orders were needed again as people subject to TPims could not be made to live in a specific location – and that “puts quite a lot of responsibility on all the security services”.
He told LBC that control orders “were stopped because the threat was reduced and quite properly they were seen as too intrusive… But I think these things have got to be considered when the drum beat changes”.
His comments came after Mayor of London Boris Johnson said in a newspaper article at the weekend that control orders should be brought back.
Mr Johnson also said Britons who travel to “war areas” should be presumed to be potential terrorists unless they can prove otherwise and people with “allegiance to a terrorist state” should lose their citizenship….”

Islam Army fears of losing territory to al-Qaeda splinter group that has captured large swaths in both Syria and Iraq.

AUSTRALIA – Man on plane carrying ‘beheading images and $30,000’
The terror suspect dragged off a plane at Melbourne airport by Australian Federal Police was reportedly carrying images of beheadings and the Islamic State flag, as well as up to $30,000 in Australian bills.
He was travelling to the Middle East with family members who were not suspected of any terror-related activities but who chose not to continue their flight, the Herald Sun has reported.
The man was released from custody after being questioned, but it is understood he is still under investigation.

A SUSPECTED Australian terrorist was dragged from a plane at Melbourne Airport by Border Force officials after allegedly trying to fly to Syria to join a jihadi group.
The revelations come as it appears increasingly likely Australia will be called upon by America in coming days to back military-action in Syria and Iraq against the ISIL terror group.
The Melbourne man, who is an Australian citizen, was flying to Beirut in Lebanon with three family members when he was detained aboard a flight on a Middle Eastern airline on Monday.
He was searched by Australian Federal Police officers, who discovered he was carrying around $30,000 in Australian currency.
He was also allegedly in possession of terror-related images including photographs of beheadings, and images of the flag flown by the murderous terror group ISIL, which is rampaging across Syria and Iraq.
The family members were not suspected of any illicit behaviour and were free to continue but chose not to fly.

Well now you can’t — because hotels across the traditionally Muslim country have banned the burkini. Scores of resorts across the state have slapped a ban on the halal swimsuit, which covers the body and has a head covering attached, because they claim it’s unclean.
Holiday hotspots across Morocco have been flooded with signs screaming “burkini not allowed,” causing misery for Muslim tourists planning to take a dip. One resort near the economic capital Casablanca told Al Arabiya News that burkinis are not allowed to be worn in the resort, with only “ordinary swim-suits” getting the green light from over-zealous fashion police.
The controversial stunt has sparked fury among activists. Government MP Abdelaziz Aftati has sent a complaint to Tourism Minister Lahcen Haddad, after a woman wearing a burkini was reportedly banned from a swimming pool in al-Jadida, according to local press reports.
Aftati claimed that the move signified the “rudeness of the new colonisation.” Meanwhile, he claimed that it is unacceptable to restrict people’s freedom and their beliefs.
