5. Iran Sends Tanks to Iraq to Fight ISIS

As American jets flew top cover, in mid-August Kurdish Peshmerga militia and Iraqi special forces troops recaptured the strategic Mosul Dam from Islamic State militants. Meanwhile Iraqi Golden Brigade commandos liberated parts of Tikrit from the Islamists.

But the militants counterattacked—and that drew Iran into the fighting. In a move that could have far-reaching consequences, Tehran has sent tanks into northern Iraq.

  1. #5 M60s aren’t up to a fight against even the latest Russian Tanks, against the M1s that ISIS has captured they will be next to useless. However if they are used properly they will do massive damage against thin skinned vehicles and any infantry unlucky enough to get in their war.

    The real big question is how well trained are the crews and how good are the officers, during WWII the Russians made good tanks but lost almost all battles because the crews and officers didn’t know what they were doing.

        • You have to know what to look for, the modern tanks have flatter turrets and sloping rather then curved armor, they also have reactive armor but that is hard to spot in photos.

        • Reactive armor is a sheet of explosive that doesn’t harm the tank when it explodes but interrupts the plasma core from the shaped charge in the anti-tank round.

        • It reacts (explodes) when another explosive is set off on its surface, the anti-tank rounds have what is called a shaped charge in their warhead. think of a block of plastic explosive that someone has stuck a pencil into. When the explosion occures the opening allowed the other explosive around it to form a very hot plasma beam that will cut through the tank armor. The explosion of the reactive armor disrupts that plasma beam and prevents the tank from being destroyed.

        • Not as hot and nasty as it would if the anti-tank missile penetrated and set off the ammo in the on board magazine.

        • For a few decades a lot of people have been saying that in hte future weapons will be so sophisticated that we will be back to a pure infantry battlefield. Things aren’t that bad yet but as science advances it looks like we may go that way.

    I liked the use of a quote from a novel by Joseph Conrad to demonstrate conclusively (‘So, no, there is nothing original or unprecedented about this’) that Islam has nothing to do with Islam. This woman should never have been allowed on a university staff unless to mop the floors.
