    “Afghanistan’s attorney general has barred a New York Times correspondent from leaving the country because of a story in which he reported that a group of officials were considering seizing power because of the impasse over who won the recent presidential election, a spokesman said Tuesday.

    Basir Azizi, a spokesman for the attorney general, said Matthew Rosenberg’s Aug. 18 story was “against the law and national interests of Afghanistan.” Azizi said Rosenberg was asked to come to the attorney general’s office on Wednesday with his lawyer.

    The head of the Kabul International Airport confirmed the attorney general sent a letter saying Rosenberg couldn’t leave the country…”

    “Skirmishes broke out Tuesday between Iraqi security forces and militants on the outskirts of Tikrit, a local official and a resident said, a day after the Iraqi and Kurdish troops backed by U.S. airstrikes dislodged Islamic militants from a strategic dam in the country’s north.

    The United Nations refugee agency, meanwhile, said it is launching one of its largest aid pushes aimed at helping close to a half million people who have been forced to flee their homes by the violence in Iraq.

    The clashes in Tikrit, some 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Baghdad, began on the militant-held city’s southwestern outskirts when a military convoy was travelling along the main highway that links Baghdad with the northern provinces, they said. The Iraqi military shelled militant positions inside and outside the city.

    There were no immediate reports of casualties. The local official and resident both spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing for their safety….”

    “Northern Ireland police said Tuesday they have arrested a man on suspicion of smuggling 35 Afghan immigrants into England in a container shipment, during which one man died.

    The 34-year-old man was arrested Tuesday in the Northern Ireland town of Limavady. Police say he is being interrogated on suspicion of manslaughter and aiding the illegal entry of the Afghans into the United Kingdom.

    Dock workers in the port of Tilbury, east of London, heard the Afghans screaming and pounding the walls of the container as it was unloaded from a cargo ferry Saturday.

    One man, 40-year-old Meet Singh Kapoor, was pronounced dead at the scene. The others — identified as three Kabul families including 13 children — were treated for dehydration and hypothermia.

    Also Tuesday, police arrested a German national suspected of people smuggling in a separate investigation after 15 people from Eritrea and Kashmir were found in the back of a truck.

    Police said the truck, discovered at a service station in Somerset, southwest England, originated in mainland Europe.”

    “Six people, two of them children, were killed Tuesday when a school bus was struck by a remote-controlled bomb in northwestern Pakistan, authorities said.

    The dead included a 5-year-old boy; a 7-year-old girl; three teachers and a bus driver, according to Sohail Khan, an official with Bajaur agency, the region in which the attack occurred.

    The bus was part of a local education organization funded by the Dutch education ministry.

    Bajaur is one of the semi-autonomous districts that make up northwestern Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas.”

    “A group of soldiers in north-eastern Nigeria is refusing to fight Islamist Boko Haram militants until they receive better equipment, one of the mutineers has told the BBC. The soldier, who requested anonymity, said at least 40 of his colleagues would refuse orders to deploy.

    A defence ministry spokesman said the incident was being investigated. A state of emergency that was declared in three north-eastern states last year has failed to curb the insurgency.

    Boko Haram is fighting to create an Islamic state in Nigeria – and has stepped up its attacks after being pushed out of its bases in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, targeting towns and villages in deadly raids.

    “Soldiers are dying like fowl,” the soldier, who said he and his colleagues were just outside Maiduguri, told the BBC Hausa service. “The Nigerian army is not ready to fight Boko Haram,” he said, explaining that soldiers were not being given enough weapons and ammunition to take them on. “Boko Haram are inside the bush, everywhere,” he said “They [senior commanders] are sacrificing soldiers,” he said.

    Defence ministry spokesman Gen Chris Olukolade told the BBC’s Focus on Africa programme that he could not confirm the reports of a mutiny but would investigate.
    He denied that soldiers were being “sent to die”. “We may not have all it takes but we are improving on it [equipment] regularly,” he said…”
