Kurdish forces ‘retake Mosul dam’ from IS militants
Kurdish forces in northern Iraq have taken control of Iraq’s largest dam after its capture by Islamic State (IS) militants, Kurdish officials say.
Kurdish ground forces supported by US air strikes launched the operation to take Mosul dam on Sunday morning.
Kurdish sources said they were still trying to clear mines and booby traps from the area round the dam, a process which could take several hours.

“A Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician on Sunday called on thousands of anti-government protesters to stop paying taxes and practice civil disobedience until Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif steps down, raising fears of instability in the nuclear-armed U.S. ally.
Imran Khan, who heads Parliament’s third largest bloc, made the announcement at a rally in the capital calling for Sharif to step down over alleged voting fraud in the May 2013 election, the first democratic transfer of power in a country with a long history of military dictatorships.
Khan also warned that his supporters would take over Parliament if Sharif does not resign within two days.

Pakistan: Thousands march against Israel on Palestine Day
Thousands of pro-Palestine protesters led by Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) marched on the Shara-e-Faisal district of Karachi, Sunday.
Protesters taking part in the “Gaza Million March” waved Palestine and Jamaat-e-Islami flags while chanting anti-US and anti-Israel slogans. JI recently announced August 17 as the Day of Solidarity with Palestine, an event given national recognition by Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
JI chief Sirajul Haq addressed the rally saying that the time has come for the Pakistani army to “play a role against Israel.” He further said the party had collected 50 million rupees ($821,000) to donate to the people in Gaza.

A bin bag containing severed cats’ heads was found dumped on a street near Manchester’s famous Curry Mile.
Council bosses in Manchester have launched an urgent investigation and the RSPCA is being contacted.
