1. Report: Obama Blocks Israel Missile Shipment 

A new Wall Street Journalreport reveals that President Barack Obama’s administration blocked a shipment of missiles to Israel in late July and tightened additional weapons shipment procedures to Israel, revealing increasing tensions between the two governments.

The U.S. decision to tighten arms transfers to Israel comes as the UK threatens similar actions. On Tuesday, the British government announced the suspension of 12 arms export licenses to Israel if fighting resumed in Gaza.

3. Rights group says Chinese police open fire on Tibetan protesters

(Good thing for the Chinese police these Tibetans weren’t in Gaza or else there would be heck to pay!)

(Reuters) – Chinese police have opened fire on Tibetan demonstrators in southwestern China, wounding 10 people, after the Tibetans protested against the detention of a respected village leader, a Tibetan rights group said.

The crackdown in the Ganzi prefecture of Sichuan province, a flashpoint for Tibetan protests against Chinese rule, underscores simmering tensions between Tibetans and the Chinese authorities.

The UK-based International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) group, citing several Tibetan sources in exile, said late on Wednesday the area “is now under tight control, with local Tibetans including the elderly and children subject to interrogation”.

4. NY City Cabbie Convicted of Arranging Honor Killings

Mohammed Choudhry arranged two killings to avenge his family’s ‘humiliation’ after his daughter fled an arranged marriage.

(It was obviously a forced, and not an arranged marriage. The media needs to get wise to this critical distinction)

A veteran New York City taxi driver originally from Pakistan was convicted of two honor killings he arranged to avenge his family’s “humiliation.”

Mohammed Choudhry, 61, who drove a cabin New York for more than 20 years, had forced his 23-year-old daughter, Amina Ajmal, into an arranged marriage in Pakistan in 2012. However, Ajmal, who was raised in the U.S. and college-educated, was in love with another man, Shujat Abbas.

    It’s been two months since ISIS took over Iraq’s second largest city. But U.S. analysts are still trying to figure out how big the group is and the real identities of its leaders.

    The U.S. intelligence community is still trying to answer basic questions about the jihadists who tried to wipe out Iraq’s remaining Yazidis and who now threaten to overrun the capital of the country’s Kurdish provinces.

    In a briefing for reporters Thursday, U.S. intelligence officials said the government is in the process of re-evaluating an estimate from early this year that said the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) had only 10,000 members. These officials also said intelligence analysts were still trying to determine the real names of many of the group’s leaders from records of Iraqis who went in and out of American custody during the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

  7. Al Nusrah Front spokesman explains differences with Islamic State in video appearance

    In a video released online on Aug. 8, Abu Firas al Suri, who serves as the Al Nusrah Front’s spokesman, answered questions about the ongoing war in Syria. Al Suri denies that Al Nusrah plans to unilaterally declare an Islamic emirate (or state) in Syria. And he explains how Al Nusrah, which is an official branch of al Qaeda, differs from its rival, the Islamic State, in waging jihad.

    The video was first obtained and translated by the SITE Intelligence Group.

    “The Al Nusra Front did not announce an emirate in the meaning of an independent emirate, or the meaning of a state, or any meaning close to that,” al Suri insists.

    “We mean the emirate should be established by consulting those who have an Islamist affiliation, whether from the jihadi factions, or the local leaders of the country, or the people of influence, and of course, with all the scholars inside and outside the country,” al Suri says, according to SITE’s translation.

    Last month, a controversy erupted in jihadist circles after an audio recording of Al Nusrah’s emir, Abu Muhammad al Julani, was leaked online. Julani’s speech was widely interpreted as meaning that his group was going to declare itself the head of an Islamic emirate and fully enforce sharia law in the areas under its control without consulting other Islamist and jihadist groups. The potential move was viewed as a response to the Islamic State’s announcement on June 29 that it now rules as a caliphate.

    “The time has come … for us to establish an Islamic emirate in the Levant, to implement the limits and punishments of God Almighty, and his laws in every sense of the word, without compromise, complacency, equivocation, or circumvention,” Julani says in the leaked message.

    “The scale of the Ebola outbreak appears to be “vastly underestimated”, the UN’s health agency says, as the death toll from the disease reaches 1,069. The World Health Organization said its staff had seen evidence that the numbers of reported cases and deaths do not reflect the scale of the crisis. It said in a statement that “extraordinary measures” were needed.

    The outbreak began in Guinea in February and has since spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

    However, the WHO said the risk of transmission of Ebola during air travel remained low, as the disease is not airborne.

    As a consequence, Kenya Airways has rejected pressure to suspend its flights to the Ebola-hit states of West Africa….”

  11. #1 This is what I have been worried about, Israel doesn’t have enough population to both fight large scale and manufacture weapons large scale at the same time. If the US and Europe decide to stop exporting (resupplying) munitions Israel will have a limited number of days or weeks it can fight.

    • As you say, others – like France and Germany – follow the U.S. lead. Besides the practical threat of weapons shortages for a country at war, it’s a terrible message to put out to the world.

      U.S. aid has strings attached: it must be used for purchase of U.S.-made products (and spare parts, ammo for previously purchased weapons). That’s a catch.

      This may represent a drive for Qatar to supplant Israeli as “best buddy” of the U.S. in the region. We already have all kinds of assets there. And our POS is MB, all in the family.

      • He may be doing that, or he may be setting Israel up for a real hard time when Hamas and Hezbollah attack on two fronts, if they are attacked on two fronts and the US Air Force isn’t flying in more munitions 24/7 bad things can and possibly will happen. What worries me big time is that Obama seems to be more Shiite then Sunni, and the Shiite are the ones who believe they have to create hell on earth. What better way then to put Israel in the position of having to use the Sampson option and fire their nukes at the Islamic capitals and Holy cities?
