3. Northern Ireland First Minister forced to apologise after backing pastor who said Islam was a satanic religion

Northern Ireland’s First Minister Peter Robinson was backed by Muslim leaders after making a grovelling private apology over controversial remarks about Islam.

The DUP leader publicly backed a fundamentalist preacher who attacked Islam as a ‘doctrine spawned in hell’ and said he did not trust them.

Mr Robinson said he would not trust Muslims to give him religious advice – but insisted he would be okay with them ‘going down the shops’ for him.

(Now we wait for leaders of Muslim nations and communities to apologize for the prayers , demands, actions and beliefs that demand the death and or subjugation of all other people in the world.)

4. India rape victim’s mother ‘beaten by accused’s father’

The mother of an Indian rape victim was allegedly beaten by the father of the accused after her family refused to withdraw allegations against his son, police said Friday.

The mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was critically ill in hospital after suffering multiple fractures in the attack at the family’s home in the Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh, police and medics said.

The father of the accused has been arrested and police said they were still looking for several other suspects accused of taking part in the attack on the victim’s mother on May 26.

5. Muslims pray to turn Turkey’s greatest monument back into a mosque

(The headline is grotesquely misleading. It should read, ‘Muslims attempting to force one of Christendom’s greatest buildings to be limited in use to a mosque only’ or something very much like that)

By Ayla Jean Yackley

ISTANBUL (Reuters) – It has served as the exalted seat of two faiths since its vast dome and lustrous gold mosaics first levitated above Istanbul in the 6th Century: Christendom’s greatest cathedral for 900 years and one of Islam’s greatest mosques for another 500.

Today, the Hagia Sophia, or Ayasofya in Turkish, is officially a museum: Turkey’s most-visited monument, whose formally neutral status symbolises the secular nature of the modern Turkish state.

But tens of thousands of Muslim worshippers gathering there on Saturday hope it will again be a mosque, a dream they believe Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan can fulfil.

Since it was in the 1920s when the Turks forced the Greeks out of Turkey isn’t it time to remove the Turks and let the Hagia Sophia be reconsecrated as a Greek Orthodox Cathedral?

There are even rumours – denied by the government – that Erdogan, a religious conservative who is seeking the presidency at an election in August, could lead prayers there one day soon.

“This is a serious push to break Ayasofya’s chains,” said Salih Turan, head of the Anatolia Youth Association, which has collected 15 million signatures to petition for it to be turned back into a mosque.

“Ayasofya is a symbol for the Islamic world and the symbol of Istanbul’s conquest. Without it, the conquest is incomplete, we have failed to honour Sultan Mehmet’s trust,” he said, citing a 15th Century deed signed by the conquering Caliph and decrying as sin other uses of Hagia Sophia.

  5. LIBYA – MAY 31 2014 – US special forces arrive to tackle Libya Islamists

Special forces from the United States, France and Algeria have been dispatched to Libya’s south to target terrorist networks, The Times newspaper reported Friday.

The U.K. daily quoted Olivier Guitta, director of research at the Henry Jackson Society, a London-based think-tank, as saying the Special Forces’ objective was al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (Aqim).

Guitta said Western states were inclined more than ever to intervene in the North African state.

Mokhtar Belmokhtar, a one-eyed Algerian militant believed to be responsible for killing foreign oil workers in Algeria last year, was of particular interest to Western states, Guitta said.

“The issue of terrorism is huge and for the time-being they are looking at getting the south cleaned up as much as possible from Aqim and finding Mokhtar Belmokhtar,” he said.

“But at the same time if they can get the country to be more stable and less inclined to helping other Islamist militias, then they’ll do it,” he added.

There were reports last year Belmokhtar had been killed in a firefight with troops from Chad but The Time quoted security sources as recently confirming he had left Mali and taken refuge in southern Libya.

A spokesman for U.S. Africa Command, based in Germany, which has responsibility for Libya, said there were no American troops in southern Libya, the Times report said.

A spokeswoman at the White House also denied the claim, the paper said.

“We are not conducting strikes in southern Libya,” she told the daily.

The paper said some 180 U.S. marines were on standby to provide extra security for the American embassy in Tripoli. They were sent to Sigonella in Sicily but have yet to receive orders to fly to Tripoli.

On Tuesday, a U.S. defense official said the United States was deploying an amphibious assault vessel carrying 1,000 marines near the Libya coast in case the U.S. embassy had to be evacuated.

  7. EGYPT -Copt detained in Luxor for insulting religion

Article 98 of Egypt’s penal code says anyone convicted of offending religion in any form can face up to six years in prison

Prosecution authorities in Upper Egypt’s Luxor ordered Friday the detention of Kirollos Shawky for four days pending investigations over allegations that he insulted Islam.

According to the state-owned news agency MENA, Shawky was arrested for allegedly posting pictures insulting Islam on his personal Facebook page. Another six, accused of attempting to use the incident to incite locals to attack Shawky’s house with stones, were also arrested.

Safwat Samaan, chairman of Nation Without Borders, a human rights group in Luxor, said on his Facebook page that the 29-year-old Shawky did not post anything insulting to Islam but was rather accused by someone in his neighbourhood of “liking a page titled ‘Knights of the Cross’ that posted something offensive.”

He added that Shawky was not accompanied by a lawyer during the investigation.

  9. If there were dogs around the Hagia Sophia area to hear those howling, nasal chants, they would’ve joined in the chorus.(Stockholm Syndrome? Not me.)

Erdogan boldly cast himself as Sultan of the Caliphate-2-B when the Arab Spring began. Siding with the MB turned out to be the wrong move; he couldn’t believe how fast his paymasters in the Gulf turned on him.

To win back their love he spoils 3 years of negotiations with the Israelis aimed at normalizing relations. Oops, timing wrong! Now the real Arabs are snuggling with Mossad! He’s just shot himself in the foot, lost millions of shekels he could almost smell.

Becoming Grand Central Station for the Jihad Foreign Legion is beyond stupid. Jihadi tourism is plenty lucrative in the short-term, but that permeable border is a double-edged sword. Hardcore Al-Queda or ISIS don’t do tourism as a conventional industry. Nor do they do power-sharing.

He’s a crook even more egregious than what passes for normal in that loathsome pigsty. Exposed by social media, he clumsily tries to ban Twitter. Foiled again!

Restive population… But Erdogon’s always got a card up his sleeve…

An ace: The Hagia Sophia Card!.

  10. I’m sure you have all seen “man on the streets” interviews on western TV. I would love to have one outside the Hagia Sophia.
What was the former name of this city?
Who built the Hagia Sophia and what was it initially constructed for?
What was the religion of the people that constructed the Hagia Sophia?
What was the standing of this city when the Hagia Sophia was constructed?
When were the minerets constructed and what did they represent?
Who declared that the Hagia Sophia should become a museun?

I am willing to bet that the majority of protestors could not answer these questions…
Of course, world wide media including that of the west wouldn’t touch these questions with a ten foot poll. They might upset someone. Better everyone forgets.

  11. babs,
    Very interesting idea.
If I were a history professor giving a course on the subject, I’d use your questions as the basis for an exam.

Tour guides in Turkey might know the answers. Of course there are always those who just memorize a little speech without understanding a bit of it.
