  1. US to deploy 200 troops to Jordan over Syria war: minister

AMMAN — The United States plans to deploy 200 troops in Jordan because of “the deteriorating situation” in war-torn Syria, Information Minister Mohammad Momani said on Wednesday.

“The deployment of the troops is part of US-Jordanian military cooperation to boost the Jordanian armed forces in light of the deteriorating situation in Syria,” Momani told AFP.

He did not say when the troops were scheduled to arrive in Jordan.

“US and Jordanian officials have been in touch for the past two days. It is still unclear if military equipment and weapons will arrive with the group, who will come to the kingdom in the coming stage.”

Jordan, a key US ally in the region, says it is hosting around 500,000 Syrian refugees.

Prime Minister Abdullah Nsur told parliament on Sunday that the impact of Syria’s war posed a threat to the kingdom’s security and Jordan would seek the UN Security Council’s help to tackle the fallout.

Hagel: US sending Army planners to Jordan

WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told Congress on Wednesday that the Pentagon is sending about 200 soldiers from an Army headquarters unit to Jordan to assist efforts to contain violence along the Syrian border and plan for any operations needed to ensure the safety of chemical weapons in Syria.

The 1st Armored Division troops are largely planners and will replace a similar number of U.S. forces that have been in Jordan for some months. They will include specialists in intelligence, logistics and operations.

Sending a cohesive headquarters unit will enhance the troops’ ability to respond to any security needs, and will provide leadership personnel that could command additional forces if it’s determined they are needed in the future.

“Currently, the U.S. forces assisting Jordan now are troops pulled from various units and places,” Hagel said in testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee. He said that sending a unit that has already served together improves its ability to work as a team.

The unit is based at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Two years of civil war pitting the forces of President Bashar Assad against his foes has killed an estimated 70,000 people and forced more than 1 million refugees to flee their homes.

President Barack Obama has insisted that Assad must go, but has cautioned about sending military assistance to Syrian opposition forces, which could extend the fighting and unintentionally put weapons in the hands of Islamic extremists.

Obama has made clear that Assad would cross a red line if he were to use his suspected stockpile of chemical weapons — including nerve agents and mustard gas — against the Syrian people.

  3. Obama meets with Saudi foreign minister, discusses Syria

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Barack Obama met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal at the White House on Wednesday and discussed the conflict in Syria, a spokeswoman said.

The meeting was not on Obama’s public schedule.

The spokeswoman, Caitlin Hayden, said the president joined a meeting between the Saudi official and Obama’s national security adviser, Tom Donilon.

“The president and Prince Saud al-Faisal reaffirmed the strong partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia and discussed developments in the region, including the conflict in Syria,” Hayden said in a statement.

  4. obummer is sending soldiers over to get rid of the scum that he is helping to arm…..how stupid can he get?? I wonder if this is proven to be true could he be impeached for aiding and abetting a terrorist organisation and then be sued by the parents of the fallen soldiers ???

  5. If you mean are the crimes enough for a bill of impeachment, yes. If you mean will he be kicked out, not a chance, the Dems control the Senate and they will refuse to kick him out. With the MSM backing him and lying about the reasons for the impeachment he would probably emerge stronger then ever.
