Fraudster: Virendra Rastogi benefited from more than £5million in legal aid despite owning millions of pounds worth of property

A legal aid bill of more than £5 million was paid for by taxpayers to defend a fraudulent businessmen who still owns millions of pounds worth of property.

Before he was jailed for fraud in 2008 Virendra Rastogi enjoyed a plush existence in his exclusive Mayfair flat and pocketed a total of £4.15million in just five years, between 1996 and 2001.

And despite still owning a plush £6 million seven bedroom flat in Mayfair as well as properties in India the 44-year-old was granted legal aid for his six month trial after he was declared bankrupt.

Despite being chauffeured to and from court and living at the impressive flat during his trial, taxpayers’ cash was used to foot the bill because he had been sued by the banks he had cheated and his assets were frozen.

Rastogi was the multi-millionaire chief executive of a billion pound business which was subjected to investigation from the Serious Fraud Office in 2002 after it was raking in cash from a number of fictitious metal trading firms.
