When I first started researching Islam one of my first thoughts was that it was in many ways a lot like a giant organized crime ring with a kind of religious, post-hoc’ justification for the thuggish and illegal (at the time) actions of Mohamed and his gang as they killed and attacked caravans and so on.
This story seems to indicate it has not lost its roots.
