‘Shackled’ Tory goes to UKIP

From the Cambridge News and Crier

A CONSERVATIVE on Huntingdonshire District Council has defected to the UK Independence Party.

Cllr Andy Monk, who was elected as a Conservative to serve Ramsey, moved over to UKIP just weeks after fellow Conservative Paul Dakers quit in frustration, claiming council officers wielded too much clout.

Cllr Monk said: “I am very pleased to have joined UKIP. Like many other Conservative members, I have agreed with UKIP on key issues for many years.

“I feel the current leadership of the Conservative Party no longer represents real Conservative values and that local Conservative leaders do not allow their councillors the freedom to properly represent the local community.”

Cllr Ian Bates, Conservative leader of the council, said: “It is disappointing to me that he has defected. He was selected and elected as a Conservative by the people of Ramsey, so it is a disappointment.”
