The Last of the Moroccans

by Baron Bodissey This post taken verbatim from Gates of Vienna.

The short film below was released this week in the Netherlands and has caused a lot of discussion in the Dutch media. Many thanks to our Flemish correspondent VH for the translation and Vlad Tepes for the subtitling:

VH has translated some additional material about the film from the Dutch media. First, from De Volkskrant:

What is the Netherlands without Moroccans?

A man in a dressing gown cycles through heavily polluted streets to the newspaper distribution center to get his morning paper. In the paper are ominous and surreal headlines: “Prisons for sale”, “Civil servants set back to 20-hour week”, “Dramatic drop in sole proprietorships”, and “The last Moroccan is leaving today”.

That last headline summarizes the core message of the internet film “Heads or Tails: What will the Netherlands look like without Moroccans?”

The eight-minute-long film — which was launched at www.munt.nu — depicts in a playful manner the what the consequences of a Moroccan-free Netherlands might be like. The staff at Social Services are twiddling their thumbs, a performance of the comedian Najib Amhali [the Cargo-bike Imam] is canceled, the Rotterdam football team Feyenoord is champion, but the mayor [the Moroccan Ahmed Aboutaleb] is nowhere in sight to celebrate for players, and the opinion pages of newspapers are not being filled in.

The film is an initiative by “Munt”, a group of Dutch Moroccans, who (for the time being) do not want to go public with their real names. The film itself should tell the story, the Munt team replied a request by email. “As soon as we start talking about the film, we will fill in the thoughts for the people, and that is not the intention.”

Munt does wants to reveal, however, what lies at the basis of the film. “For years the debate has often been extremely cramped, and seems almost to have become a ritual without content, in which people interact at each other in a predictable way”, the team says in an email. “We want the Dutch people to reflect on the absurdity of that debate. Because there the Moroccan Dutch are spoken about as though they are optional in our society; a part that can easily be “amputated”. We want to make people think: is this really what we want? “

The bulk of the earliest responses are making that very clear.

At the website Munt.nu — which has been unreachable for a few hours because of the massive interest — three-quarters of the visitors on Tuesday afternoon indicated “not to be able to wait” for the moment the Moroccans leave the Netherlands.[1] Even on web sites like Geenstijl.nl, most of the forum participants in response to the film cheered a Moroccan-free Netherlands: “What a utopia!”

The Munt team — in their own words “born and bred Moroccan Dutch [sic: the Dutch text does not say “Dutch Moroccans” — translator] who do not feel that they are second-class citizens, but fully participate and contribute to Dutch society — is optimistic. “Based on the responses we can develop new initiatives.”

[1] The poll asked whether it is a good for the Moroccans to actually leave the Netherlands. The result is that 72% cannot wait until the last Moroccan has actually left the Netherlands. Only 20% of he visitors found that Moroccans really belong in the Netherlands.

In the meantime a new poll has come out: “Who should leave after the Moroccans?

Antilleans [Caribbean], Turks, and Surinamese 42.51%

Everyone who wants to leave themselves 33.82%

Nobody, the Moroccans leaving is enough 23.67%

And from Het Vrije Volk:

The Moroccans are leaving?

Dark clouds over the Binnenhof [Dutch parliament buildings]: “A drastic decline in the number of sole proprietorships, the newspaper will not be delivered, and Rotterdam is without a mayor. Just a few consequences when the last Moroccan leaves our country,” the Dutch newspaper AD writes after having watched the movie by Munt.Nu. An initiative by a group of apparently alarmed Moroccans.

I never knew that the African negroes who in the middle of the night deliver the newspapers suddenly all have applied for the Moroccan citizenship. With the drastic decline of the sole proprietorships therefore it will not be that bad. Moreover, the loverboys are also able to exercise of their profession elsewhere. Or are they not included in the definition “sole proprietorship”?

But still, using an imaginary magic wand to depict what the country would look like without Moroccans is just too tempting to not fantasize along with Munt.Nu. After all, opportunity makes the thief. And to make a virtue of necessity, but then immediately imagine what it would be like if the Moroccans forty years ago would have avoided our country like the plague.

Theo van Gogh would still make movies. Ayaan Hirsi Ali is hardly likely to have been threatened. The crime level would tumble to such depths that the prison cells would not empty be due to the low rate of solved crimes, but due to a lack of crime.

There would almost be “peace and quiet” in the disadvantaged neighborhoods. The “neighborhood fathers” would with sit with a steaming glass of mint tea in front of them, restraining their offspring in Morocco. The level of anti-Semitism would be down the level of the fifties. There would hardly be any hateful imams roaring in the mosques. Gays would less often have to be given first aid. The social benefits office windows would push over a lot less money. The number of files would be reduced. The housing shortage would be alleviated. The number of headscarves and forced marriages would be down to about half the number. Well, it is quite possible to live with that.

Whoever watches the movie of Munt.Nu will be surprised at how much of a national interest many Moroccans impute to themselves. Maybe a movie can be cast in which all the natives have vanished. Yes, then it will become real fun, and last somewhat longer than the eight minutes the movie by Munt.Nu surprises the world with now.

No longer does any Moroccan need to deliver the newspaper because they are not made any longer. Rotterdam would immediately go bankrupt, soon followed by the entire country because the GDP would plunge to North African levels.

The Moroccan street gangs have no victims left, and gradually start attacking each other. The loverboys [Moroccans who seduce native girls and then force them to prostitution] are changing to colored “lovers”.

The State broadcasters are shut down due to a lack of members and financial resources.

And yes, the traffic congestion problem and housing shortages will be resolved in one stroke, but unfortunately nobody has the means to buy a car, or to buy or rent a house.

On top of it all, many Moroccans decide to repatriate because of famine and water scarcity.

Ahmed Aboutaleb [Moroccan-Dutch mayor of Rotterdam] calls for martial law, sends the remaining parliament back home and is advised by the last remaining native, Alexander Pechtold [leader and MP of the center-left anti-Wilders party D66], who while wrapped in a djellaba reads out a proclamation for the Muslim broadcaster, which unfortunately will not be broadcast because the electricity is inoperative.

The Netherlands joins the Arab League, invites Hugo Chávez, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and Barack Obama for a friendly visit and a request for emergency relief.

Unfortunately, none of that happens, because the Netherlands has disappeared under water because with the departure of the natives the drainage systems have stopped working.

The country is declared an international nature preserve because of the damp undergrowth and tidal landscape in which a rich fauna emerges.

The curlews, avocets, oystercatchers and eider duck take power and establish a waterfowl dictatorship.

The exiled Marianne Thieme [MP for the “Party for the Animals”] sends a telegram of congratulations to the young bird-republic…
