More resistance and more capitulation, but less and less is untouched: Links 1 on Jan. 31 – 2015

1. Very interesting new satire magazine, and from the fraction I have read, dead on the money.

2. Chuck Hagel indicates that pressure form the White House forced his hand on Gitmo releases.

(Another data point on Obama motives?)

3. American man wounded in Al-Ahsa shooting

An American resident was shot and wounded while driving with a fellow US citizen in Al-Ahsa on Friday.
The Eastern Province police said in a statement that shots were fired at the men at 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon as they were driving along Saladin Al-Ayobi Road.
The man is reportedly in a stable condition at a local hospital. The police have launched an investigation.
This is the fourth recent attack on foreigners since Gulf states joined a US-led coalition against Islamic State jihadists in Syria and Iraq in September.
Last month, Saudi authorities arrested three supporters of the IS group for shooting and wounding a Dane in his car in Riyadh.

4. Arm ALL police with Tasers to fight terror war: Call for extra protection against lone-wolf fanatics

(UK once again takes a wrong turn, caring more about optics than efficacy)

The terrorist threat level for police was raised to severe two weeks ago in the wake of the Paris atrocity and a foiled assault on officers in Belgium.

Since then, police chiefs and junior officers have been considering how to counter the extra dangers.

Last December, a threat was made to kidnap and kill a policeman in the West Midlands. Officers were given extra security briefings and urged not to travel to work in uniform.

Leaders of the Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file officers, will vote next month on a proposal that every uniformed frontline officer should be offered training in the use of Tasers, though some may choose not to carry them.

7. Robber brothers preyed on women using CHILLI POWDER to blind their victims

SWNS
Kashif Ashraf and Khalid Ashraf

Two brothers preyed on women in a series of robberies where they used chilli powder to blind their victims.

Kashif Ashraf, 34, and Khalid Ashraf, 28, preyed on women, snatching mobile phones after throwing the painful spice in their faces.

Police believe the pair used the powder so their victims wouldn’t be able to identify them.

Thank you Buck, Don C., and all who sent in materials. More to come.

  1. DallasNews: Vitriol over prayer at Fort Worth rodeo leads imam to cancel repeat Published: 30 January 2015 09:10 PM

On Wednesday, the Stock Show posted: “We would like to take this opportunity to separate fact from fiction: There was never a Muslim prayer — or a prayer of any specific religion at the Stock Show.”… [snip]…”Bakhach, who speaks regularly at events across Tarrant County, said there was “a beautiful spirit” Sunday night in Will Rogers Coliseum. “I didn’t hear any negative reaction to what I said,” he said.

The article contradicts itself…did the imam pray or not? StarTelegram suggests he did:

Tallman said Bakhach “did a wonderful job” when giving Sunday’s prayer.

If he did offer an Islamic prayer, I’d want to see an unedited video of Bakhach’s comments/prayer?… translated by a trusted source. Islam’s most common prayer denigrates non-believers. How would those in attendance recognize this if the imam’s comments/prayer? were in traditional Arabic?

    • This is priceless:
A sampling of the sentiments expressed: “I for one won’t attend an event that allows a darkness to be spoke over me,” “Muslim/Islam has no place in this country” and “I just will choose NOT to go so”.
