  2. We can follow along in our Korans as they toss out verses in support of this horror and make connections to the early history of Islam, but of course if any of us suggested the identical verses advocated violence it would be cherry-picking.

“International airlines have suspended flights to Yemen’s main airport for 24 hours due to weeks of clashes between rebels and Islamist fighters near the capital.

‘Arab and foreign airlines have decided to suspend their flights to Sanaa for 24 hours because of developments in the capital,’ the Civil Aviation Authority said on Friday morning.

The measure could be extended or reconsidered depending on the security situation, it said in a statement carried by the official Saba news agency.

The move follows fighting between Shi’ite rebels, known as Huthis or Ansarullah, and Sunni Islamists backed by troops.

Nearly 40 people were killed in violence just outside the capital on Thursday….”

“A suicide bombing and shelling in the Shi’ite-majority Kadhimiyah district of north Baghdad has killed at least 14 people, security and medical officials say.

Thursday’s attacks also wounded more than 30 people, the officials said.

There was no immediate claim for the attacks, but Sunni extremists, including those from the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group, frequently target members of Iraq’s Shi’ite majority, whom they consider heretics…”

“Fighting between Shi’ite rebels and Sunni Islamists backed by troops have killed nearly 40 people outside Sanaa, as the UN envoy huddled in the rebel stronghold to try to end Yemen’s political crisis.

Fighting raged on Thursday between the rebels, known as Huthis or Ansarullah, and fighters of the Islah (Reform) party in Shamlan, just north of the capital, where rebels have been camped for weeks.

The violence has spread to Iman University of religion, which belongs to top Islah cleric Abdulmajid al-Zindani, they said.

‘More than 38 people were killed and dozens more wounded,’ a security official told AFP, his numbers confirmed by hospital sources.

Most of the casualties occurred in clashes after tribal fighters ambushed a rebel convoy on the road linking Shamlan and the university, with a tribal source saying 30 Huthis had also been taken prisoner.

Thursday’s deaths brought the number registered in three days of fighting to 81….”

  6. US General says Iraq army ‘incapable’ (skynews, Sept 18, 2014)
    http://www.skynews.com.au/news/world/mideast/2014/09/18/us-general-says-iraq-army–incapable-.html

“Around half of Iraq’s army is incapable of working with the US to recapture territory from the Islamic State (IS) in western and northern Iraq, according to the top US military officer.

General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that military teams that spent much of the summer in Iraq assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the security forces found that only 26 of 50 army brigades were capable partners for the US.

Gen Dempsey, a former wartime commander of US training programmes in the country, described them as well led and well equipped, adding: ‘They appear to have a national instinct, instead of a sectarian instinct.’

These would still need to be partially rebuilt with US training and more equipment, he added.

The other 24 brigades were found to be too dominated by Shias to be part of a credible national force….”

“A Kenyan official says two Iranians carrying forged Israeli passports have been arrested in Nairobi.

The man and woman were taken into custody Friday as they were about to board a flight out of the country, a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak with the press.

The officer says a preliminary investigation indicates the two Iranians — who were not identified — bought the forged passports in Armenia before arriving in Kenya on Sept 9.

The officer said the suspects claim they are refugees and were seeking to go to Belgium, but authorities believe their final destination would have been Israel.

Last year a Kenyan court sentenced two Iranian nationals convicted of plotting attacks against Western targets to life in prison.”
