Reader’s Links for April 7th, 2025

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

… At the same time, one of the things that happens, if you are rushing, is that you do, and I’ve seen this elsewhere, you will put pressure on the people you can pressurize, and you will not put enough pressure on the people you can’t pressurize.
And that is, one of the worrying things that could happen with this.
Simply you can put, America can put, extraordinary diplomatic, financial intelligence, military pressure on Ukraine, and it can put significant pressure on Putin. But it’s much easier to pressure Zalinski.
And that’s one, of the many things, that makes it harder, is that the temptation to rush for peace, accepting that peace is the most desirable thing, accepting the horrors of war, which you know we can linger on, but you accepting all that, If somebody says we got to get peace today and the three of them around a table the most likely thing is that it’ll be that, it’ll be the person who you can pressure most easily who will be the person that you pressure. And as a result, have an outcome, which yes, might stop the killing as soon as possible, but might also set up a situation which rewards the aggressor and effectively punishes the victim. And that’s an extremely ugly and common thing to happen.

Damon Joshua, an employee of Severn Trent Water Supply in the U.K., has been fired from his job due to a social media post he put up in observance of the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attack on innocent Israelis.

On Oct. 7, 2024, the sewage worker took to an employee website and characterized those who raped, tortured, mutilated, and murdered 1,200 Israelis as a “group of violent and disgusting terrorists.”

  6. Under Mark Carney’s leadership, global investment firm Brookfield was accused of breaching Indigenous rights or harming the environment in at least four countries, CBC Indigenous has found.

Carney, who is running for prime minister as Liberal leader, spent more than four years as vice chair and then chair at Brookfield Asset Management, where he focused on green investing and renewable energy.

During that period from 2020 to 2024, Brookfield businesses faced reports of serious human rights abuses in Brazil, Indigenous resistance in Colombia, a First Nation’s $100-million lawsuit in Ontario and an environmental dispute in Maine.

    Chief Justice Roberts

Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts indefinitely blocked a court order requiring the return of alleged MS-13 gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia by midnight tonight.

Earlier Monday, President Trump asked the US Supreme Court to intervene and grant an emergency stay of the judge’s order to return alleged MS-13 gang member Abrego Garcia to the United States.

Roberts granted the Trump Administration a stay on Judge Xinis’ order pending resolution.

Lawyers for Abrego Garcia have until Tuesday, April 8 to respond.

    — Margot Cleveland (@ProfMJCleveland) April 7, 2025

Last Friday US District Judge of the US District Court for the District of Maryland, Paula Xinis ordered the Trump Administration to return an alleged MS-13 gang member to the United States after he was deported to El Salvador’s notorious CECOT prison.

Judge Xinis ordered the Salvadoran gang member to be returned by Monday at midnight but Roberts blocked her order.

Solicitor General John Sauer took issue with Judge Xinis’ broad order and condensed timeline it his emergency application to the Supreme Court.

“The Constitution vests the President with control over foreign negotiations so that the United States speaks with one voice, not so that the President’s central Article II prerogatives can give way to district-court diplomacy. If this precedent stands, other district courts could order the United States to successfully negotiate the return of other removed aliens anywhere in the world by close of business. Under that logic, district courts would effectively have extraterritorial jurisdiction over the United States’ diplomatic relations with the whole world,” Solicitor General John Sauer argued in his emergency application to the Supreme Court.

John Sauer also said the US does not control El Salvador and therefore “cannot compel El Salvador to follow a federal judge’s bidding.”

  11. The American Jacobin: How Some on the Left have Found Release in an Age of Rage

Below is my column in the Hill on the rising political violence on the left. Many have found an irresistible release from both reason and responsibility in rage. A new study found more people embracing political violence. Joel Finkelstein, the lead author of the report, stated that “what was formerly taboo culturally has become acceptable… We are seeing a clear shift – glorification, increased attempts and changing norms – all converging into what we define as ‘assassination culture.’” Roughly 40 percent reportedly found it somewhat justifiable to burn a Tesla or even to kill Donald Trump.

    Here is the column:

“We should replace our piece of crap Constitution.”

Those words from author Elie Mystal, a regular commentator on MSNBC, are hardly surprising from someone who previously called the Constitution “trash” and urged not just the abolition of the U.S. Senate but also of “all voter registration laws.”

But Mystal’s radical rhetoric is becoming mainstream on the left, as shown by his best-selling books and popular media appearances.

There is a counter-constitutional movement building in law schools and across the country. And although Mystal has not advocated violence, some on the left are turning to political violence and criminal acts. It is part of the “righteous rage” that many of them see as absolving them from the basic demands not only of civility but of legality.

They are part of a rising class of American Jacobins — bourgeois revolutionaries increasingly prepared to trash everything, from cars to the Constitution.

The Jacobins were a radical group in France that propelled that country into the worst excesses of the French Revolution. They were largely affluent citizens, including journalists, professors, lawyers, and others who shredded existing laws and destroyed property. It would ultimately lead not only to the blood-soaked “Reign of Terror” but also to the demise of the Jacobins themselves as more radical groups turned against them.

Of course, it is not revolution on the minds of most of these individuals. It is rage.

Rage is the ultimate drug. It offers a release from longstanding social norms — a license to do those things long repressed by individuals who viewed themselves as decent, law-abiding citizens.

Across the country, liberals are destroying Tesla cars, torching dealerships and charging stations, and even allegedly hitting political dissenters with their cars.

Last week, affluent liberal shoppers admitted that they are shoplifting from Whole Foods to strike back at Jeff Bezos for working with the Trump administration and moving the Washington Post back to the political center. They are also enraged at Mark Zuckerberg for restoring free speech protections at Meta.

One “20-something communications professional” in Washington explained “If a billionaire can steal from me, I can scrape a little off the top, too.” These affluent shoplifters portrayed themselves as Robin Hoods.

Of course, that is assuming Robin Hood was stealing organic fruit from the rich and giving it to himself.

On college campuses, affluent students and even professors are engaging in political violence.

Just this week, University of Wisconsin Professor José Felipe Alvergue, head of the English Department, turned over the table of College Republicans supporting a conservative for the Wisconsin Supreme Court. He reportedly declared, “The time for this is over!”

Likewise, a mob this week attacked a conservative display and tent on the campus of the University of California-Davis as campus police passively watched. The Antifa protesters, carrying a large banner with the slogan “ACAB” or “all cops are bastards,” trashed the tent and carried it off.

Antifa is a violent and vehemently anti-free speech group that thrives on U.S. college campuses. In his book “Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook,” Mark Bray explains that “most Americans in Antifa have been anarchists or antiauthoritarian communists. … From that standpoint, ‘free speech’ as such is merely a bourgeois fantasy unworthy of consideration.”

Of course, many of the American Jacobins are themselves bourgeois or even affluent figures. And they are finding a host of enablers telling them that the Constitution itself is a threat and that the legal system has been corrupted by oligarchs, white supremacists, or reactionaries.

This includes leading academics and commentators who are denouncing the Constitution and core American values. Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the UC Berkeley Law School, is the author of “No Democracy Lasts Forever: How the Constitution Threatens the United States.”

In a New York Times op-ed, “The Constitution Is Broken and Should Not Be Reclaimed,” law professors Ryan D. Doerfler of Harvard and Samuel Moyn of Yale called for the nation to “reclaim America from constitutionalism.”

Commentator Jennifer Szalai has scoffed at what she called “Constitution worship.” “Americans have long assumed that the Constitution could save us,” she wrote. “A growing chorus now wonders whether we need to be saved from it.”

As intellectuals knock down our laws and Constitution, radicals are pouring into the breach. Political violence and rage rhetoric are becoming more common. Some liberals embraced groups like Antifa, while others shrugged off property damage and violent threats against political opponents. It is the very type of incitement or rage rhetoric that Democrats once accused Trump of fostering in groups like the Proud Boys.

Members of Congress such as Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) have called for Tesla CEO Elon Musk to be “taken down” and said that Democrats have to be “OK with punching.”

Some take such words as a justification to violently attack a system supposedly advancing the white supremacy or fascism. Fortunately, such violence has been confined so far to a minority of radicalized individuals, but there is an undeniable increase in such violent, threatening speech and in actual violence.

The one thing the American Jacobins will not admit is that they like the rage and the release that it brings them. From shoplifting to arson to attempted assassination, the rejection of our legal system brings them freedom to act outside of morality and to take whatever they want.

Democratic leaders see these “protests” as needed popularism to combat Trump — to make followers “strike ready” and “to stand up and fight back.”

For a politician, a mob can become irresistible if you can steer it against your opponents. The problem is controlling the mob once it has broken free of the bounds of legal and personal accountability.

    • That’s why I’m not a 1A absolutist and oppose the concept.
_Normalizing_ what is abhorrent and _Incitement_ are real, have done great harm throughout history. But I don’t know how to codify boundaries or how they might be enforced in an enlightened society.

      • I am with you, remember the ACLU was created to use our laws and moral code against the US. What we must also remember is the “The Constitution is Not a Suicide Pact”. This phrasing was used in the late 1940s but the sentiment goes back to Thomas Jefferson and famously Abe Lincoln. We have to find a way to ensure freedom of speech while protecting the nation from those who want to destroy it.

Like you I don’t know how to write the laws to do this so we must muddle through this mess.

        • There are plenty of ultra-articulate constitutional law experts. This is a mission that might be accomplished in a colloquy of the best and brightest.

  12. U.S. Second Amendment: Means ALL Weapons & ZERO Infringements ~ VIDEO

Many read the U.S. Second Amendment (2A), but the filter/lens used is 21st-century, and few understand 18th-century legal syntax.

We know that the 2A to the U.S. Constitution, as ratified in the year of our Lord 1791, is a subject of both historical reverence and contemporary debate. The amendment states:

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Penned in the late eighteenth century, the 2A requires a proper 18th-century explanation to fully comprehend its implications, particularly for today’s modern scholars. I will explore this amendment using language and understanding, befitting the era of its creation but explained in a manner accessible to us modern, common people.

At its core, the amendment consists of two clauses: a prefatory clause (“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State”) and an operative clause (“the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”).

A prefatory clause provides the rationale or context for the right, and in the eighteenth century, the term “militia” was not confined to a formal military body but encompassed all able-bodied citizens capable of bearing arms for defense. This was seen as crucial for maintaining the liberty of the state against potential tyranny, either from within or without.

The operative clause explicitly grants the people the right to “keep and bear Arms.” As we understand even today, the verb “to keep” implies possession, while “to bear” suggests the carrying or use of arms, which in the context of the time primarily meant firearms but also extended to other weapons known or unknown necessary for defense.

    YouTube video player

To grasp the Second Amendment’s intent, one must consider the colonial experience and the philosophical underpinnings of the time:

In the years leading to the American Revolution, the British disarmament of colonial militias, i.e. the colonists, was seen as an attempt to subjugate the colonies. The right to bear arms was thus viewed as essential for securing individual and collective liberties.

Enlightenment thinkers like John Locke argued for natural rights, including the right to self-defense. This philosophy was deeply ingrained in the American mind, influencing the Framers of the Constitution to protect such rights against all governmental overreach.

In the early republic, the amendment was wrongly generally understood in light of state militias. Cases like U.S. v. Miller (1939) wrongly linked the right to bear arms with the military utility of the weapon in question, suggesting that only arms with a reasonable relationship to the preservation or efficiency of a well-regulated militia were protected.

However, the landmark case of District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) expanded this interpretation, with the Supreme Court ruling that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to possess firearms for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home. This decision was followed by McDonald v. City of Chicago (2010), which extended this individual right to the states, and the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen, (2022), further extended the right to possess arms.
The Term “Shall Not Be Infringed” To Some Is Contentious. All Hands OFF!

While it suggests protection against all undue regulation, the exact scope of permissible regulation has been debated, leading to various laws on weapon types, background checks, and more unconstitutional legal jockeying. This contention should not exist! “Shall not be infringed,” per our Founders, is simple, plain language aimed at the entire public at large. This is not like the First Amendment’s “Congress shall make no law,” which was aimed at Congress only and which needed the 14th Amendment to apply to the state governments.

Understanding the Second Amendment involves recognizing:

Historical Context: The amendment was a response to both British governance and the philosophical belief in natural rights.
Dual Nature of the Right: It involves both an individual aspect for self-defense and a collective aspect for the security of the state.
Legal Evolution: The ‘interpretation’ of this right has evolved, reflecting changes in society, technology, and judicial philosophy, but its meaning has NOT changed.
Ongoing Discussion: The balance between rights and responsibilities, safety, and freedom remains a live issue, necessitating an informed civic engagement.

It’s important to remember that the 2A is rooted in the eighteenth century’s lexicon and legal thought, thus encouraging a nuanced appreciation of this pivotal constitutional right. If written today, in the 21st century, with modern language and a more contemporary legal perspective, it would probably be:

“Everyone has the right to own and all carry weapons, and this right is not to be infringed. It is understood that having the ability to protect oneself and maintain security is important to the well-being of the country.”

This modern version simplifies the language and tries to reflect a more current legal approach, which focuses more on individual rights. But, our Founders wrote the 2A in terms of their time which was well understood, even by those who could not read.

We are currently seeing the start of the kinetic portion of the Civil War the left has spend decades fomenting. This Civil War will be echoed in other Western Nations with varying degrees of success in preserving freedom.

  13. For Israel, Peace in Ukraine Means Opportunity To Stop Iran

During Israel’s recent ground offensive against Hizbullah, the IDF confronted the overwhelming presence of Russian-made weaponry inside southern Lebanon. Operating in Hizbullah-controlled territory, the IDF uncovered homes converted into makeshift arsenals, packed with advanced Russian arms. Crates filled with anti-tank missiles, mortars, and rockets – many marked with Russian export codes – provided evidence of a pipeline stretching from Moscow through Damascus, and directly into Hizbullah’s hands.

The most concerning finds were sophisticated Kornet anti-tank guided missiles, capable of penetrating even the most heavily armored Israeli vehicles. Other lethal systems included Fagot, Konkurs, and Sagger missiles.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been pressing the case in Washington that any agreement to end the war in Ukraine and relaxes sanctions on Russia must include provisions to curb Russian military support for Iran and Hizbullah. Recent reports claim that Russian missile experts have been spotted at multiple Iranian sites, working closely with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to enhance Tehran’s ballistic missile capabilities.

  14. From the River to the Screen, How ‘Palestine’ Became a Viral Fantasy

The first use by Arabs of the name “Palestine” to refer to themselves didn’t occur until the 1960s. The choice of the name is almost comical considering that the Arabic language lacks the letter “P.”

Today, the mass media has replaced book culture as the dominant force creating the imagery we associate with various countries and their peoples.

[Let] the buyer beware: The fact remains that the physical world and its virtual representation are two distinct realms, and that the gap between the two presents a potential vulnerability which can be exploited in a variety of ways.

In terms of understanding and mastering the opportunity presented by the gap between the real and its representation, the Palestinians’ achievements are without equal.

In our current landscape, even when hucksters with “fake facts” are shown beyond any shadow of a doubt to be bullsh*t artists, this is no longer sufficient to stop them in their tracks. Indeed, with persistent promotion and diffusion, “alternative realities” based upon “alternative facts” often become widely accepted simply because people become familiar with them.

Add to this some emotional appeal to tug at our heartstrings, along with the natural tendency that people have to willingly embrace “fake facts” which are more congruent with their beliefs, and you have the basic ingredients for constructing an alternate reality.

Virtual Palestine is a much broader, more complex entity that exists primarily in and through the efforts of activists to promote the Palestinian narrative worldwide, and to undermine Israel’s viability as a national homeland for the Jews. “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” means, quite simply, free of Jews.

Far outside the small footprint of Real-World Palestine, Virtual Palestine thrives in many countries and involves university academic departments, NGOs and student groups, organized public events, [etc.]

Virtual Palestine proclaims its ubiquitous presence through the promotion of the Palestinian “brand” in the form of distinctive clothing, slogans, and artifacts.

The most remarkable and defining characteristic of the Palestinians has been the way that they have focused almost exclusively on dominating the media realm and implanting their fabulous narrative of Virtual Palestine in the public mind.

Meanwhile, they have expended only the most modest effort toward developing Real-World Palestine (i.e. their own productive, functioning state in the real world). Is there any other culture in the history of the world that has ever actively pursued a similar agenda? Is there any other culture whose physical presence in the real world is as miniscule in relation to its commanding presence in the virtual world?

The Palestinians have learned how to punch far above their weight by establishing a dominant position in the public mind, in the virtual realm, through the simple and relentless repetition of “the Big Lie.”

The Arab propagandists are still driving down Main Street with loudspeakers blaring, while the Hebrew scholars are quietly double-checking the accuracy of their footnotes. Boycotts and sit-ins proliferate like crabgrass, always in support of Virtual Palestine and in opposition to the imaginary colonizers.

And, for the most part, the Israelis still have no idea what hit them or how to respond.

  15. Trump’s Tariffs Tackle Clinton’s China Carnage

Twenty-five years ago, President Clinton used his remaining time in office to advocate on China’s behalf. He argued that the communist regime should be admitted to the World Trade Organization and that the United States should grant the totalitarian state permanent normal trade relations.

Critics of China pointed to the Tiananmen Square Massacre the decade before as ample reason to deny it any economic reward. Critics of Clinton pointed to allegations that his political campaign had accepted illicit contributions from China as ample reason to doubt the president’s motives. Still, Clinton got what he wanted, and China became a member of the WTO the very next year.

Anti-Islam activist vs rejected Afghan asylum seeker.
