Reader’s Links for Nov. 18, 2024

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  6. Canada foils Iranian plot to murder Irwin Cotler

Canadian security forces last month foiled an Iranian assassination plot against Irwin Cotler, the Jewish former politician and human rights advocate, the country’s The Globe and Mail newspaper reported on Monday.

A source told the daily that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police warned the former Liberal justice minister on Oct. 26 that he was the target of an “imminent threat of assassination within 48 hours from Iranian agents.”

The source said authorities knew of two suspects in the plot, but it is unknown whether they were arrested or fled the country. The RCMP did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The source claimed to The Globe and Mail that Cotler was informed last week that the threat level against him had been significantly lowered.

Cotler, 84, has reportedly been under 24/7 RCMP protection since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led cross-border massacre in Israel’s northwestern Negev.

The protection provided to Cotler by Canadian authorities was said to include bulletproof vehicles, armed bodyguards and other measures.

“After Oct. 7, my wife and I attended the March for Israel in Washington, D.C. When we flew back to Montreal, security asked us not to leave the airport. Security personnel spoke to me and informed me of what has been characterized as imminent and lethal threats, without going into further details,” Cotler said in an interview with JNS earlier this year.

The international legal scholar noted at the time that “the community of democracies including Canada does not understand the threat of Iran.”

Cotler, who served as Canada’s justice minister and attorney general between 2003 and 2006, has been on the Islamic Republic’s radar for his calls to list the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist entity.

The Jewish jurist has also represented Iranian political prisoners and is a strong supporter of Israel. He was Canada’s special envoy on Holocaust remembrance and combatting antisemitism from 2020 to 2023.

Cotler currently serves as the international chair of the Canada-based Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, which he founded in 2015.

  9. New State Movement Gains Momentum Across Illinois, California and Other States Due to Tyrannical State Governments

The “new state movement” is gaining steam as tyrannical state governments destroy states and prevent citizens a voice.

The US has been taken over by communists in many federal, state and local governments. Once they take over, their first action is to prevent any possibility of being removed. States like California and Illinois have half the state population in more rural areas who no longer have a voice.

Good Americans sit back and watch their rights destroyed while their states destroy their farmlands or prevent businesses like fracking or lumber to prosper. The rationale for these moves is more related to the destruction of the state and its people than anything logical. Timber is plentiful in Oregon that can’t be touched while California shuts off water to farmers throughout the state. The border is open, and millions are spent on illegals or anything other than the protection and prosperity of these states’ citizens.

The Wall Street Journal published a piece on these growing efforts of independence from the tyrannical monsters who run many far-left states.

A burgeoning breakup movement is gaining momentum across Illinois, California and other states where vast swaths of red, rural counties are dominated by a few blue cities. More residents are pushing to break off and form new states. Or as a group called New Illinois State—which has declared itself independent from actual Illinois and last weekend passed the first draft of a new constitution—puts it: “Leave Illinois Without Moving.”

Gioja [a man mentioned in the article] was among the 73% of voters in predominantly rural Iroquois County who on Election Day backed the idea of forming a new state with every Illinois county except Cook, home to Chicago and more than 40% of the state’s population. The nonbinding resolution also passed in six other counties, bringing the total to 33 of Illinois’s 102 counties.

“There’s a lot of people in Chicago, and I think that they make a lot of decisions that affect people downstate,” said Gioja, who doesn’t expect a New Illinois soon. “It’s just sending a message that, ‘Hey, you know, there’s people that would like to be part of the conversation, and often aren’t.’ ”

The urban-rural divide is a longtime fissure in American life, one that President-elect Donald Trump played up on the campaign trail as he railed against large Democratic-run metropolises—while also making electoral gains in many cities. Now, emboldened separatist groups see the incoming administration as uniquely friendly to red, less populous areas that feel steamrolled by left-leaning urban power centers.

“I’m so flipping excited,” said Paul Preston, founder of New California State, which has declared all the counties outside of Los Angeles, the Bay Area and Sacramento as independent and named him governor pro tempore.

Contemporary quests to redraw the map of the U.S. have bubbled up before, with Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia each long seeking to become the 51st state, and some states floating the idea of becoming independent nations.

As for the wannabe breakaway counties, a divorce could get messy. Becoming new states would require consent of the existing legislatures—extremely unlikely in most blue states—as well as Congress, according to Article IV, section III of the U.S. Constitution. That has only happened a handful of times, including the formation of Kentucky with the consent of Virginia and the founding of Maine, which was once part of Massachusetts.

Yet when West Virginia sought statehood during the Civil War, Congress approved even without the consent of Virginia’s legislature in Richmond, which had voted to secede.

Preston thinks that could be an opening for New California. He said he plans to petition Congress for statehood based on the argument that the current California government is “a one-party communist state, and technically, they have seceded from the Union already.”

Preston has been working on the creation of the state of New California for some time. With his leadership, the state of New California has its own legislature in place. He has visited Washington, DC, to share the plight of many citizens in California and offer a solution.

West Virginia led the way during the Civil War and President Lincoln saw the benefits of the new state, not only to the citizens of West Virginia but also to the country.

The people living under tyranny and unable to throw out the communists running their state and local governments due to election processes that prevent outsider wins are working and praying that they make the new state initiatives a reality soon.

  10. Trump Confirms He Will Declare ‘National Emergency’ on Immigration, Will Employ Military to Start Mass Deportations

    Truth
Donald Trump appears intent on making good on his promise to deport millions of illegal immigrants.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump confirmed a post by Judicial Watch founder Tom Fitton that claimed Trump would declare a “national emergency” in order to hit the ground running.

“GOOD NEWS: Reports are the incoming @RealDonaldTrump administration prepared to declare a national emergency and will use military assets to reverse the Biden invasion through a mass deportation program,” Fitton wrote.

    “TRUE!!!” Trump responded.

18 November 2024 Peace and Security

Over 20,000 people have fled their homes across Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince in just four days amid escalating gang violence, with more than 17,000 seeking shelter in 15 displacement sites as critical supply chains collapse.

Haiti has faced instability since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. The current wave of displacement, the largest since August 2023, comes as armed gangs who have joined forces strengthen their grip on the capital, leaving the national Police overwhelmed and underequipped.
    City under siege

The capital faces near-total paralysis, IOM warned, following the incident last week when commercial aircraft were reportedly fired on, hitting a United States-based Spirit Airlines jet as it was landing at the national airport, injuring a flight attendant.

The US Federal Aviation Administration has banned flights to Haiti for at least the next 30 days. International flights remain grounded, compounding the beleaguered nation’s sense of isolation.

With the main seaport access restricted and roads controlled by gangs, essential supplies cannot reach the vulnerable population, said the agency.

“The isolation of Port-au-Prince is amplifying an already dire humanitarian situation,” warned Grégoire Goodstein, IOM’s Chief in Haiti. “With only 20 percent of Port-au-Prince accessible, humanitarian workers face immense challenges in reaching affected populations,” he added.
    Escalating gang violence

Criminal groups in the capital continue their expansion, taking control of additional neighbourhoods and further isolating communities.

The national police force, grappling with a severe lack of resources, remains overstretched and faces significant challenges in containing the escalating violence

The toll of gang-related violence has reached catastrophic levels, with the UN human rights office (UNHCR) reporting nearly 4,000 gang related deaths in 2024 alone.

Gender based violence, including sexual violence used as a weapon of terror, has reached alarming levels. Women and children bear a disproportionate burden of the crisis, with 94 percent of displaced women and girls at heightened risk of violence.
    Humanitarian response efforts

Despite severe access constraints, IOM continues to provide life-saving assistance through mobile medical clinics, rental subsidies for displaced persons, protection of services, psychological support, water delivery to displacement sites and supports at border crossings.

The Organisation maintains operations throughout the country, including migrant protection centres and community stabilisation projects.

IOM emphasised the importance of upholding humanitarian principles amid the escalating crisis and called on all parties to respect the neutrality and impartiality of aid operations, allowing unimpeded access to those in need and safeguarding the integrity of humanitarian assistance.
    Funding crisis

The humanitarian response faces a severe funding shortfall, with the UN’s $674 million response plan critically underfunded at just 42 percent.

“Without immediate international support, the suffering will worsen exponentially,” Mr Goodstein emphasised.

  12. The Media Has a Major Opportunity With the Matt Gaetz Saga. They Should Seize It.

It has been years since the allegations that now-former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz had “paid for sex,” or “had sex with a minor,” or “had drug-fueled orgies with sex-trafficked women.” The allegations became enragingly outlandish for a man who, as a self-proclaimed libertarian in his youth, had straightened up in Congress, married the love of his life, and was intent on focusing on his firebrand populism to deliver for his constituents.

It is no coincidence that the knives were out for one of the few Members of the House of Representatives who does not take campaign donations from moneyed, corporate interests, nor Political Action Committees (PACs). In taking this conscientious stand, Gaetz found himself in the crosshairs of the irate establishment from his very first day on Capitol Hill.

Since then, his star has only risen with the Make America Great Again (MAGA) base and, indeed, with President Trump himself. It seemed for a while that his career in politics may well have culminated with his heroic ouster of Speaker Kevin McCarthy, especially given McCarthy’s predictable “I’m going to ruin you” response.

But despite having had the kitchen sink thrown at him in terms of lurid allegations, internecine primary challenges, and more, Gaetz is not just still standing but is running, not walking, toward the fire.

This presents a rare opportunity for America’s media—one they are unlikely to seize.

Trust in media is at record lows. Take your pick of the multitude of reasons why: the COVID origins story; all the anti-Trump hoaxes including but not limited to the Russia collusion hoax and the ‘fine people’ hoax; the way they report on abortions/miscarriages/IVF; their insistence that the Biden-Harris economy was “doing great” despite all evidence to the contrary. The list is endless.

But the media doesn’t have to fall for nor peddle the Gaetz hoax again. It could and should instead do its job: ask the hard questions of both sides and report the facts as they emerge, not as they want them to emerge.

Matt Gaetz has never had a chance to face any actual accuser. Mostly because the Biden-Garland Department of Justice (DOJ) investigated him for years and came up with absolutely nothing. But in the days preceding his appointment to the role of Attorney General, Gaetz will surely face Senate “witnesses” who will peddle whatever they’re asked.

The phony case against Gaetz rests squarely at the feet of convicted sex trafficker, fraudster, stalker, and identity thief Joel Greenberg. As a result of Greenberg’s arrest and charge, he agreed to provide information to the Biden government about Gaetz. So far, all of Greenberg’s claims have led to dead ends.

So, will the press bother to ask those tough questions of Greenberg and the girls he tries to implicate in the story? Will they challenge the claims of the latest Avenatti-style Democrat lawyer, Joel Leppard. Or will they simply parrot them as they did with Stormy Daniels’s lawyer? Or Letitia James? Or Fani Willis?

Credibility is extremely hard to win back once it has been expended. But casting a skeptical eye on disgusting claims that have remained unproven for years, even by the nation’s top law enforcement bodies, shouldn’t be too difficult for anyone who fancies themselves an actual news reporter.

Or perhaps therein lies the problem…

Pennsylvania Supreme Court Rejects Dem Effort To Count Illegal Ballots

The court held 4-3 the ballots “shall not be counted for purposes of the election held” on Nov. 5, instructing counties to comply with earlier court rulings. The Republican National Committee sued Thursday after several counties decided to count ballots with incorrect dates.

“Following our latest RNC lawsuit, today the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled yet again that undated ballots CANNOT BE COUNTED,” RNC Chairman Michael Whatley wrote in a statement on X. “No more excuses. Election officials in Bucks, Montgomery, Philadelphia, and other counties have absolutely no choice but to reject illegal ballots. We will hold them to it.”

Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice David Wecht wrote in a concurring statement that it is “critical to the rule of law that individual counties and municipalities and their elected and appointed officials, like any other parties, obey orders of this Court.” Justice Kevin Brobson likewise wrote that local election officials do not “have the authority to ignore Election Code provisions that they believe are unconstitutional.”

Bucks County commissioners voted Thursday to allow misdated ballots to be counted as the race between Democratic incumbent Sen. Bob Casey and Senator-elect Dave McCormick headed towards a recount.

The Associated Press called the race for McCormick, who is now leading Casey by over 17,000 votes, on Nov. 7.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court previously affirmed Nov. 1 that requiring mail ballots to have handwritten dates is constitutional.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

  14. s the USA on the Cusp of Passing National Constitutional Carry?
Ammoland Inc. Posted on November 18, 2024 by Tred Law

    Opinion
    Constitutional Carry Coming Soon
    Constitutional Carry Coming Soon, Maybe!

The 2024 elections brought significant changes to the political landscape, with Republicans taking control of the White House, Senate, and House of Representatives.

This shift has created a unique opportunity to push forward a legislative agenda that champions constitutional values, including the right to keep and bear arms. One piece of legislation at the forefront of this movement is Rep. Thomas Massie’s National Constitutional Carry Act (H.R. 9534), which aims to ensure that Americans can exercise their Second Amendment rights without interference from state or local restrictions.
What Is the National Constitutional Carry Act?

National Constitutional Carry Act (H.R. 9534), is a bold proposal to eliminate the patchwork of state laws that currently dictate where and how law-abiding citizens can carry firearms. Under this bill, states and localities would no longer be able to impose criminal or civil penalties on eligible individuals carrying firearms in public. The Act also invalidates existing regulations that penalize lawful gun owners for exercising their right to self-defense. This legislation ensures that the right to bear arms, as guaranteed by the Second and Fourteenth Amendments, is applied uniformly across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories.

This bold bill seeks to end the patchwork of restrictive state and local gun laws, ensuring that all Americans can exercise their Second Amendment rights consistently across the country. Let’s break down what’s at stake.

    What the Bill Does

H.R. 9534 guarantees the right to carry firearms nationwide by:

Eliminating penalties: Prohibits states and localities from imposing criminal or civil penalties on law-abiding individuals carrying firearms in public.
Overturning restrictive laws: Invalidates existing regulations that penalize lawful carry.
Covering all U.S. territories: Ensures uniform rights across states, D.C., Puerto Rico, and other territories.

As Rep. Massie explains, “No one should have to beg the government to exercise a constitutionally protected right anywhere in the country.”

    Key Data Points

29 states already allow constitutional carry. Despite fears from gun control advocates, these states have not devolved into chaos. In fact:
A study in Ohio showed reduced gun-related crime in six cities after adopting constitutional carry.
Gun control strongholds like California and Illinois continue to face staggering violence, contradicting claims that stricter gun laws ensure safety.

    SCROLL DOWN TO CONTINUE READING

Hunter King of the National Association for Gun Rights emphasizes: Twenty-nine states have proven [gun control advocates] wrong. Crime rates remain stable or even decline under constitutional carry laws.
    Why It’s Important

Supporters argue that this bill isn’t just about gun rights—it’s about reaffirming fundamental freedoms. The legislation:

Removes barriers for law-abiding citizens to defend themselves and their families.
Simplifies the legal landscape for gun owners traveling across state lines.
Sends a message that the federal government stands with constitutional rights over bureaucratic overreach.

Patrick Parsons of the American Firearms Association notes, “For the past 15 years, anti-gun liberals have told everyone that states passing constitutional carry would experience violence like we haven’t seen since the ‘wild west’ days. Twenty-nine states have proven them wrong, all while gun-control strongholds like DC, Chicago, and California have descended into violence and deadly chaos.”
    Challenges on the Horizon

While the stars seem aligned for gun rights advocates, obstacles remain:

Senate supermajority: Republicans lack the numbers to override a filibuster, making bipartisan support crucial.
Opposition from anti-gun groups: Expect loud resistance from organizations that paint constitutional carry as reckless.
Presidential Veto? With Trump as President? I don’t think so. So not an issue this time, but future legislative efforts will hinge on maintaining political control.

    The Current Landscape

Currently, 29 states have adopted constitutional carry laws, allowing residents to carry firearms without a government-issued permit. These states have proven that empowering citizens to exercise their Second Amendment rights does not lead to chaos or increased crime. In fact, a recent Ohio study found that gun-related crime decreased in several cities after constitutional carry was implemented.

In contrast, gun control strongholds like Chicago, Washington D.C., and California continue to grapple with high rates of violence, undermining the argument that strict gun laws lead to safer communities. H.R. 9534 aims to bring the benefits of constitutional carry to all Americans, regardless of where they live.

Opposition to National Constitutional Carry: Concerns and Claims

Critics of the National Constitutional Carry Act argue that the legislation would compromise public safety and undermine states’ rights. They highlight the wide variation in state standards for concealed carry, with many states requiring safety training, live-fire experience, and stricter eligibility checks. Federalizing constitutional carry would, opponents claim, force states with rigorous standards to accept permits—or lack thereof—from states with minimal or no requirements. According to Everytown for Gun Safety, “Visitors could carry concealed firearms—even if they’ve recently been convicted of violent crimes or never received safety training.”

Public safety concerns are central to the opposition. Many states with permitless carry laws do not require safety training or proficiency testing, and some lack safeguards to prevent individuals with violent or abusive histories from carrying firearms. For example, only 23 states require safety training, and just 17 require live-fire experience. Fearful critics scream this lack of uniformity could lead to increased gun-related accidents and violence, as well as the erosion of local control over firearm regulation.

Opponents advocate for maintaining state-level autonomy and suggest national training and safety standards as an alternative. They believe that stricter eligibility criteria, such as barring individuals with histories of domestic abuse or violent crimes, would better protect public safety. For them, the National Constitutional Carry Act represents a dangerous overreach that prioritizes individual rights over the collective security of communities.

    The Road Ahead

With a Republican-controlled Congress and a conservative-leaning Supreme Court, the prospects for passing national constitutional carry legislation have never been brighter. However, challenges remain. Even with GOP majorities in both chambers, achieving a supermajority in the Senate to overcome a filibuster will be difficult. Furthermore, the legislative process requires careful coordination and robust public support to counter inevitable opposition from anti-gun advocacy groups and Democratic lawmakers.

If passed, this legislation could mark a transformative moment for Second Amendment rights in the United States. It would ensure that citizens no longer have to “beg the government” for permission to exercise their constitutionally protected freedoms—a sentiment echoed by Rep. Massie and supported by prominent gun rights organizations.
    Why It Matters

The National Constitutional Carry Act isn’t just about firearms; it’s about Second Amendment freedom. It’s about affirming that the government should not place undue burdens on citizens exercising their inalienable rights. A unified national standard for constitutional carry would simplify the legal landscape for gun owners, reduce the risk of accidental violations, and bolster public safety by deterring crime through responsible firearm ownership.

As the Republican majority begins its term, this legislation represents a critical opportunity to restore and protect Americans’ rights. The stakes are high, but the rewards—a safer, freer America—are worth the fight.

Back in about 1972 my father sold the family home to a draft dodger. I remember quite a few in Ottawa. They were quiet about it but it usually came out.

      • The world is turning more conservative and rejecting the Marxist philosophy, this is an attempt by a dedicated leftist trying to stop the return to sanity. It will be a hit with the left and the rest of the nation will reject the premise that the Draft Dodgers were opposing an unjust war.

The US entered the war in Nam after the medical missionary the Dr. Tom Dooley wrote the book “The Night They Burned The Mountain” about how the communist guerillas were committing genocide on the Mountain tribes. After the Dems refused to resupply the South and it fell, the genocide begin again and there are more ethnic Mountain Tribal members in the US then in Nam. FYI the Dems tried to prevent the US from letting our Allies from that war into the US.

In my opinion and in the opinion of most of the other Vets the dodgers weren’t against the war they were either cowards that were afraid to go to combat or were Traitors to Western Civ who should have never been pardoned and let back into the US. That is a crime that Jimmy Carter will never be punished for, he should have been removed from office for that mass pardon.
