Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  2. Did the Russian FSB not go back to paper some years back to protect itself? I’m no techie but it seems to me no system is completely safe. This will include digital money in the form of cbdc, no? Which makes me think about…

    • Decades ago my lawyer told me he planned a transition away from paper. Then he changed his mind completely. He’s kept one safe in his main office and another offsite. Sends and receives checks and receipts the old-fashioned way – paper and post office.

      • digital documents aren’t legal documents, they can be easily changed and the changes will be very hard to detect, that is why all businesses keep paper or chemical film photo copies of their files.

    • Backstory: Last night Quando, Quando started playing in my head.
      I did not hear that song on the radio. So why did it pop in my head?
      Then I thought about many people on various platforms claiming that God is talking to them. Now I am getting a little bit jealous because all I get is Quando, Quando.

      So I went to YT to find that song.
      I thought that Tom Jones sang that song. But I was wrong. It was Engelbert Humperdinck. But I remember this song by Tom Jones. When I was in HS (all girls HS) I would recite the intro to this song, to my classmates with the emphasize on the word Foola.

      I went back this morning to listen to Quando, Quando again because it is a happy song. That’s when I stumbled on Songaminuteman, the Father and Son team.
      That’s when I thought that maybe God was speaking to me by putting that Quando, Quando song in my head.

      Sometimes we get stuck in the mud by current events, this horizontal plane, which we should, but remember to take some time for that vertical plane. Well that’s my story and I’m sticking with it.

    At the start of the Battle of the Bulge, Allied forces in the field were mainly second-echelon troops that were not as experienced as the well-trained troops that the US would throw into the battle as it progressed. (And an Allied “secret weapon” was the audacious George Patton.) German forces, on the other hand, were well trained, highly disciplined, and resolute and tough fighters.

    There is a similarity here between the current Kursk battle and the Bulge. Russia did not have its regular army at Kursk. The area was defended by inexperienced territorial forces. The Ukrainian brigades, on the other hand, were among the best troops in Ukraine. The rapid advance into Russia around Kursk and the capture of hamlets and villages is clear evidence of the lack of preparedness on the Russian side and its exploitation by the Ukrainian armed forces.

    In the case of the Bulge, the Germans were aided by bad weather that made aerial reconnaissance impossible for some time. It also aided the Nazis because the Allies could not use their airpower against clustered enemy forces. That, of course, changed when the weather cleared and it made a difference…

    Ukraine also used air defenses, including mobile patriot batteries, electronic warfare assets, and a large number of drones. Likewise on the Russian side there were only territorial units that did not have armor and lacked modern anti-tank weapons.…

    The current battle scene in Kursk does not resemble the Bulge. The Nazi aim was to break the US and British armies, to split them, and drive to the sea. The Ukrainian aim is to hold Russian territory for as long as possible. In both cases the aim was negotiations, but the Nazis hoped to defeat the Allies while the Ukrainians have no such hope.

    We do not yet know if Ukraine will be able to sustain the Kursk attack. If they throw in more forces they will not have the advantage they enjoyed in the first phase of the battle. So the Ukrainian gamble is just that and carries strategic and political risk. In that sense, the Battle of the Bulge and Kursk share a common theme.

    • Note: This is a family squabble. The commanders of both armies studied at the same military academies, have blueprints of every stronghold, yet find themselves responding to a whole new set of challenges.

      The former C-n-C of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valery Zaluzhny, studied under the current Russian Federation C-n-C, Valery Gerasimov. (As in the “Gerasimov Doctrine”, Fourth Generation Warfare, similar to China’s classic “Unrestricted Warfare”.)

      Uncle Vlad’s old buddy, Russian Minister of Defense Shoigu, was finally dismissed along with some of the oligarchs he appointed to steal and lie. (Prigozhin wanted both Gerasimov and Shoigu fired. He knew criminal behavior even without a degree from a military academy.)

      Zaluzhny was dismissed by Prez Z because he was too popular – especially with the neo-Nazi officer corps – a political threat to Prez Z. A realist who resented taking orders from Nato sponsors whose military experience was limited to video wargames. (Proudly wears a bracelet with a bold swastika, which must endear him to Chrystia Freeland, Ursula Von der Leyen, and Jens Stoltenberg.)

      Now the UAF is led by Alexander Syrsky. Like Prez Z he’s an ethnic Russian and jooo. He was an officer in the Soviet Army, from a solid military family. His parents, brother, ex-wife, and kid[s] still live in the RF and have been loyal supporters of Putin for decades. His critics say he has little regard for Ukrainian lives.

      Factors other than military prowess are determinative. Generations of bones litter the region the Moslems will inherit.

    It is hard to tell when a crisis in a dictatorial regime, such as the sudden breakdown of China’s economic model, is not about this or that, but about the regime itself.

    In any case, Xi’s talk of war — which is all about the “rejuvenation” of Chinese manhood, and the impellent [sic] necessity to redeem a very long history of defeats (the last in Vietnam in 1979) by winning a war, any war -started when China’s economy was still in splendid shape.…

    Xi [will rely] on treason within Taiwan’s astonishingly lackadaisical armed forces to win quickly. Last year, Taiwan reacted to sharply risen tensions by increasing military service to a measly one year from an absurd four months – and then delayed the start to 2024…

    In the meantime, the entire world will pay a price for China’s economic downturn because it accounts for such a big slice of the world economic pie, though with a very welcome consolation prize: for the first time since 1949, it is possible to imagine a post-Communist China.

    • Yes Xi has bankrupted China, their economy is so bad it is unlikely, still possible but unlikely they will attack Taiwan.

        And the closer I look at Taiwan, the less I care about their future as a country independent of China.

        Russia is not the most trustworthy ally to either China or Iran. They gave Syria S400s, but besides the deconfliction arrangement with Israel, they never turned on the system! Never interfered with IDF bombs aimed at Iranian stuff or their proxies.

    The FBI is withholding information on a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for records related to the attempted assassination of President Trump.

    Conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch in a FOIA request asked for all records of the FBI related to their coordination with the Secret Service for Trump’s July 13 Butler, Pennsylvania rally.

    The FBI denied Judicial Watch’s request citing exemption 7(A) which applies to information that “could reasonably be expected to interfere with enforcement,” the watchdog said.

    Judicial Watch reported:

    Judicial Watch announced today that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) withheld information on a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for information about its coordination with the U.S. Secret Service regarding the July 13 Butler, PA, rally at which former President Trump was shot.

    In denying Judicial Watch’s FOIA request, the FBI cites FOIA exemption 7(A), which applies to information that “could reasonably be expected to interfere with enforcement proceedings”

    The Judicial Watch FOIA request on July 26 asked for:

    All records of the FBI, including emails, email chains, email attachments, text messages, video or audio recordings, photographs, drawings, outlook calendars, meeting minutes, finished intelligence products, bulletins, raw intelligence, threat products, correspondence, statements, letters, memoranda, reports, briefings, presentations, notes, summaries, or other form of record, regarding preparation and coordination with the USSS for former President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign rally that was held in Butler, PA, on July 13, 2024. Please provide records from June 15, 2024, to present.

    Judicial Watch is pursuing the next steps in preparation for litigation.

    “Were there others involved in the assassination attempt on Trump? If not, then why would the FBI use the excuse of protecting someone’s right to a fair trial to hide records on the FBI’s and Secret Service’s inexcusable failures to protect Trump from being nearly assassinated,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said. “The Biden-Harris administration is running a major league cover-up on the near assassination of former President Trump.”

    In a scathing critique, veterans and former comrades have lambasted Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for abandoning his National Guard unit just before a critical deployment to Iraq.

    The controversy centers on Walz’s decision to retire from the military in 2005, mere months before his unit was set to deploy, allegedly to ‘pursue’ a political career.

    Retired Capt. Corey Bjertness, who served as the chaplain for the 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery, where Walz was command sergeant major, did not mince words when speaking about the Governor’s departure.

    “In our world, to drop out after a WARNORD [warning order] is issued is cowardly, especially for a senior enlisted guy,” said Bjertness, now a pastor in Horace, North Dakota, according to the New York Post.

    But for many of his former comrades, running for Congress is no excuse for leaving his troops in the lurch.

    “Running for Congress is not an excuse,” Bjertness said bluntly. “I stopped everything and went to war. I left my wife with three teenagers and a 6-year-old, and I was gone for 19 months.”

    Bjertness added that Walz’s departure at such a critical time was irresponsible, especially given his 24-year tenure with the Army National Guard in Nebraska and Minnesota.

    “That means that a new master sergeant needs to come in and get to know everyone. Their task is to keep everyone safe and healthy,” the pastor continued. The sudden need for a replacement, he argued, could have jeopardized the lives of the 500 soldiers under Walz’s command.

    While Bjertness acknowledged that Walz should receive the honors due to him for his 24 years of service, he expressed deep concerns about Walz’s commitment to the truth.

    “The other allegations, which the National Guard members I have visited with believe to be absolutely true, make me believe we have yet another politician who has a very loose commitment to the truth,” he said.

    On Sunday, Tim Walz’s former battalion commander came out swinging with a scathing post on Facebook.

    John Kolb, who took over as lieutenant colonel of the Minnesota unit just months after Walz abruptly left to run for Congress, wrote:

    Feeling a need to say this:

    I do not regret that Tim Walz retired early from the Minnesota Army National Guard, did not complete the Sergeants Major Academy, broke his enlistment contract or did not successfully complete any assignment as a Sergeant Major.

    Unwittingly, he got out of the way for better leadership. Thomas Behrends was the right leader at the right time. He sacrificed to answer the call, leaving his family, business and farming-partner brother to train, lead and care for soldiers. He earned the privilege of being called Command Sergeant Major. Like a great leader he ran toward and not away from the guns.

    I have no opinion of Mr. Walz’s decision to leave service at the time he did. It was his right to retire early. I also have no criticism of his service as an E7 and E8 in the MNARNG. By all accounts and on the record, he was a competent Chief of Firing Battery/Gunnery Sergeant and First Sergeant. I cannot say the same of his service sitting, frocked, in the CSM chair.

    He did not earn the rank or successfully complete any assignment as an E9. It is an affront to the

    Noncommissioned Officer Corps that he continues to glom onto the title. I can sit in the cockpit of an airplane, it does not make me a pilot. Similarly, when the demands of service and leadership at the highest level got real, he chose another path.
