Two individuals died from hypothermia, or freezing, in the latest cold spell in the Northwest. The medical examiner in Milwaukee, Wisconsin is investigating three more deaths related to hypothermia.
Winter conditions in the Portland area this past weekend saw widespread damage, power outages and at least four deaths, two from hypothermia.

On Monday, thousands of anti-Israel protesters marched in New York City for a “Flood Manhattan for Gaza MLK Day march for healthcare.”
Organized by Within Our Lives Palestine, one of their targets during the march for “complicity in genocide” was Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, renowned for their care of cancer patients and for their pediatric hospital.
One protestor pointed at the hospital and shouted through a bullhorn, “Another complicit institution, Memorial Sloan Kettering Center,” while the crowd yelled “Shame!”
The footage shows the agitator pointing to the windows where staff, cancer patients battling for their lives, and young children stood looking out at the crowd, “Make sure they hear you. They’re in the windows.”

Iran has a long history of directing its coalition of the damned, carefully constructed by the late Major General Qassim Soleimani, against the West, to achieve Iran’s revolutionary aims across the Middle East.
The Houthi rebels, Shia tribesmen from Yemen, are part of Iran’s al-Quds Force network of subversive groups. It also includes Hizbullah in Lebanon, the Popular Mobilization militias in Iraq, the regime forces of Syria, and Hamas, until lately in control of Gaza.
It is time to raise our collective gaze to the real cause of the attacks: Iran. Iran acts directly as well as through its proxies, boarding and seizing ships not only close to its coast in the Strait of Hormuz but further afield as well, most recently in the Gulf of Oman.
The international community must present a course of action toward Iran aimed at curtailing its activities and those of its proxies. It would be a waste of time to do this through the UN.
Only once Iran is contained can we get back to finding a solution to the conflict in Gaza without a gun to our heads.

The astonishing speed and sweep of former President Trump’s victory in the Iowa caucuses last night delivered a massive wakeup call to Republican skeptics still dreaming of a post-MAGA world.
Why it matters: Inevitability has been the prevailing theme of Trump’s quest for a third straight GOP nomination. His historic win in Iowa — declared by the networks just 31 minutes after caucusing began — moves the country one step closer to the longest general election campaign in modern history.

1. Trump’s perfect night.
He couldn’t have scripted it any better: Trump won 98 of 99 counties in Iowa, dominating virtually every demographic while physically campaigning in the state far less than any of his top rivals.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis edged out former UN ambassador Nikki Haley for a distant second place — giving both an incentive to stay in the race and further divide voters searching for a Trump alternative.
Vivek Ramaswamy, who had sought to brand himself as the MAGA movement’s heir apparent, suspended his campaign after a disappointing fourth-place finish and quickly endorsed Trump.
Trump was in rare form early in his victory speech, urging the party to “come together” behind him and complimenting DeSantis, Haley and Ramaswamy without the usual insults — a subtle power move that seemed to signal his team will ramp up the pressure on his remaining rivals to drop out.
2. DeSantis cries “election interference.”
The Florida governor’s campaign staff and allies spent much of the night furiously attacking the media for calling the race for Trump before some caucus-goers had even cast their votes.
“The media is in the tank for Trump and this is the most egregious example yet,” DeSantis campaign spokesman Andrew Romeo said in a statement.
Still, DeSantis — who predicted six weeks ago that he would win Iowa — celebrated his 30-point loss to Trump and declared onstage that “we’ve got our ticket punched out of Iowa.”
3. Haley’s path narrows.
Haley, a former South Carolina governor, was counting on a second-place finish in Iowa to knock out DeSantis and set the stage for a stunning upset in independent-minded New Hampshire, where polls show she’s within striking distance of Trump.
But Haley’s momentum from recent debates failed to translate to a surge in Iowa. Her strategy of mining anti-Trump and moderate votes in Iowa’s suburbs fell short, and her claim last night that the GOP nomination battle is now a “two-person race” didn’t quite land with the force she was hoping for.
Haley stopped Trump from sweeping all 99 counties by a margin of just one vote in Johnson County (suburban Cedar Rapids) — an apt metaphor for the daunting task ahead.
What’s next: The three top candidates’ travel schedules speak volumes about the state of the Republican primary.
Haley is heading straight to New Hampshire, where even an upset victory on Jan. 23 may not answer pressing concerns about how she can expand her coalition beyond moderates and college-educated voters.
DeSantis is aiming to take the fight to Haley by flying straight to her home state, which holds its GOP primary on Feb. 24. It’s a tacit acknowledgment that he’s in a deep hole in New Hampshire.

The U.S. Supreme Court will weigh in on whether cities can legally ban or limit unhoused people camping in public spaces — a case that could grant California officials more power to sweep homeless camps.
The case, originating from the Oregon city of Grants Pass, could overturn or narrow a five-year-old precedent from a federal appeals court that limited how much cities in Western states could criminalize those who sleep on the streets when there aren’t enough shelter spaces available.
In the older case — Martin v. Boise — the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in 2018 that it’s cruel and unusual punishment to criminalize camping on public property when the people in question have nowhere else they can legally sleep. The ruling was binding on West Coast cities, where rising rates of unsheltered homelessness that later spiked during the pandemic were driving local politicians to pass public camping prohibitions. In 2019 the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal of that case.
Since then, California cities have often been subject to federal lawsuits after passing restrictions on when and where the unhoused can set up camps. Relying on the ruling in the Boise case, judges have delayed or outright halted camping bans from being enforced in cities including San Francisco, Sacramento, Chico and San Rafael, finding that the cities had failed to provide adequate alternate shelter options for the residents they were about to sweep from their encampments.
The situation has led city officials —and Gov. Gavin Newsom — to complain that the Boise ruling has tied their hands from addressing the state’s sprawling encampments, arguing they need to sweep camps both for health and safety reasons and for the well-being of encampment residents. It’s led liberal state and local officials, including Newsom, to join conservatives in asking the court for more power to penalize the homeless for sleeping outside. The high court has a 6-3 conservative majority.

Meet The Dem Operatives Sitting On Harvard’s Governing Board

Harvard University’s highest governing board is chock full of Democratic operatives, and many have donated thousands of dollars to Democratic causes.
One member of the board donated $100,000 to Joe Biden’s 2024 reelection fund, and another was formerly President Barack Obama’s secretary of commerce.
“While the Corporation may reflect Harvard’s current orthodoxies, it appears not to adequately account for the ideologically diverse democracy in which Harvard functions,” Adam Kissel, visiting fellow on higher education reform at the Heritage Foundation, told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
Harvard University’s highest governing board is filled with Democratic operatives and donors.
The Harvard Corporation is a 12-member board that is responsible for the university’s “academic, financial, and physical resources and overall well-being,” and candidates are determined by existing colleagues and voted on by the Board of Overseers, according to The Harvard Crimson. Many current members of the board have a history of being involved in Democratic politics, with several serving in past administrations or donating thousands of dollars to campaigns and causes.
Penny Pritzker, the leader of the Harvard Corporation, worked in the Obama administration as secretary of commerce from 2013 to 2017 and is a board member of the Obama Foundation, according to its website. Karen Gordon Mills also served in the Obama administration as the administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration from 2009 to 2013, according to The Harvard Gazette.
Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar served on the California Supreme Court from 2015 to 2021 and was nominated by former Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown. He previously worked in the Obama administration on the White House Domestic Policy Council’s teams for civil and criminal justice, public health, and immigration and co-chaired the U.S. Department of Education’s Equity and Excellence Commission, among other things.
Several other members of the board have made large donations to Democratic causes and campaigns, according to Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings.
Kenneth Chenault has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Democratic races across the country between 1989 and 2023, according to FEC filings. Chenault donated more than $100,000 to the Biden Victory Fund in September 2023 and over $20,000 to the Obama campaign in 2008.
Timothy Barakett, the treasurer of the Corporation, donated $10,000 to the Democratic State Central Committee of Maryland in September 2022, and his other two listed donations are to other Democratic causes, according to FEC filings.

Illinois voters assert Biden ‘ineligible’ to run for office, move to strike him from ballot

The candidacy of President Joe Biden is being challenged in Illinois, joining a mix of presidential candidates that some voters are trying to remove from the primary ballot.
The deadline to file objections with the Illinois State Board of Elections was on Friday when Biden and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley received objections. Former President Donald Trump’s candidacy was also challenged earlier this month.
A total of three objections were filed last week against Biden, the Democratic frontrunner. Among them, Shane Bouvet, Timothy Conrad, former U.S. Senate candidate Peggy Hubbard, and Terry Newsome maintain Biden is ineligible to hold public office for supporting foreign enemies.
“Our objection is to reinforce that We The People will not tolerate betrayal,” said Bouvet, a Stonington resident.
This objection to Biden and the mounting nationwide challenges to Trump center around Section 3 of the 14th Amendment in the U.S. Constitution but on different provisions of the law. The amendment, a post-Civil War remnant, has never been applied to keep presidential candidates off the ballot until this year.

In Trump’s Illinois case, objectors say the Republican inspired the U.S. Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021 and should be barred from running in 2024. He has been removed from the ballot in Colorado and Maine on those same grounds but received favorable rulings in California, Michigan, Minnesota, and Oregon. The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in an appeal of the Colorado decision on Feb. 8.
Objectors in Biden’s case assert he has “given aid or comfort to the enemies” during his time as a U.S. senator, vice president, and president. In their 177-page filing shared with The State Journal-Register, the objectors define China, Iran, Sinaloa Cartel and MS-13 as foreign enemies and detail in-part how Biden has assisted them.
“Biden has given aid and comfort to enemies of the Constitution and the United States by, among other things, failing to enforce the laws of the United States, allowing entry of enemy agents illegally into the country including tens of thousands of military age men, and abandoning assets of the United States to the possession of our enemies,” the objectors wrote in their filing.
The major difference in these cases, Conrad of Will County said, comes down to the oaths that Biden took as a senator and vice president compared to the one Trump took as president. The presidential oath of office requires the president to “preserve, protect, and defend” the Constitution, whereas other federal officials take an oath to “support” the Constitution.
The matter is now going before ISBOE’s General Counsel, a bipartisan, eight-member electoral board, who has heard several challenges to presidential candidates in recent years.
Biden now joins former Democratic presidential candidates Michael Bloomberg, Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama in receiving objections. Obama faced three challenges to his candidacy based on false allegations about his citizenship in 2012.
Last week, the election panel ruled to keep Village of Chatham Trustee Kristen Chiaro on the ballot in the Democratic primary for Illinois House District 95 but removed state Rep. Adam Niemerg, R-Dietrich.

Lawfare Against Trump Is Running Out of Gas

We should dispense with the tired narrative that four conscientious state and federal prosecutors—independently and without contact with the Biden White House or the radical Democrats in Congress—all came to the same disinterested conclusions that Donald Trump should be indicted for various crimes and put on trial during the campaign season of 2024.
The prosecutors began accelerating their indictments only once Trump started to lead incumbent Joe Biden by sizable margins in head-to-head polls. Moreover, had Trump not run for the presidency, or had he been of the same party as most of the four prosecutors, he would have never been indicted by any of them.
Yet now they are in a doom loop of discovering that the more they seek to rush to judgment before the election and gag Trump from speaking publicly about these star-chamber proceedings, the more he rises in the polls.
In truth, each succeeding cycle of corrupt leftwing lawfare that ends in failure—the Russian collusion hoax, the weaponized first impeachment, trying ex-president Trump in the Senate as a private citizen, the laptop disinformation set-up, the Alfa bank ping caper, the pathetic attempt to erase Trump from state ballots, and the unfolding Fani Willis moral debacle—does not return things to zero.
Rather, they serve as force multipliers for each other. Each overreach geometrically increases the dangers to democracy, ever more turns the public off, and ironically cascades sympathy and poll numbers for the very target of their paranoias.
Some of the prosecutors have colluded with White House lawyers and congressional liaisons. Some had run for office, offering campaign promises to get Trump convicted for something or other.
Now, after years of delays and deadends, all four are rushing to synchronize their trial dates to ensure that the front-running Trump is on the docket daily and not out on the 2024 campaign trail.
Do we recall when leftist legal eagles claimed that of all the iffy Trump indictments, Georgia prosecutor Fani Willis had the best case against Trump?
The phone call, we were told, was proof of “election interference.” It was Willis who got the first Trump “mug shot.” It was Willis, we were assured, who got Trump with the goods on tape, begging election officials to “find” the requisite missing votes that would prove his victory (note that he did not say “invent” the votes but to look for a supposedly existing trove of them).
And now Willis’s signature case is in shambles.
We learn, allegedly, that 1) Willis hired her stealth boyfriend Nathan Wade as a special counsel, the day before he filed for divorce (whose records were then mysteriously sealed by the court); 2) that Wade so far has received over $650,000 as special counsel, reportedly including a miraculous ability to charge for 24 hours of continuous legal service in a single day; 3) that Willis and Wade allegedly have used her greenlighted windfall to him to go on a number of pricey junkets and cruises; 4) that to try an ex-president and the leading candidate in the 2024 presidential election, Willis picked Wade who had never tried a single felony case and was previously a “personal injury/accident” lawyer; 5) that the supposedly apolitical Willis had consulted with the January 6 partisan congressional special committee, while Wade had met for marathon meetings with the Biden White House legal counsel (and apparently billed Georgia taxpayers for receiving such federal tutorials).
The legal community’s initial dismissal of this sordid prosecutor’s office is reminiscent of the immediate efforts to downplay Claudine Gay’s plagiarism. But the charade will eventually end the same way, in this case with the resignation and likely indictment of the prosecutor, along with her boyfriend, who concocted quite a scheme at the expense of the taxpayers. Both have made a mockery of their indictment of an ex-president and, if the allegations are true, will be disbarred and prosecuted.
The other three indictments are even weaker. Alvin Bragg claims that Donald Trump’s efforts a near decade ago to enact nondisclosure agreements and payments to remain silent about embarrassing behavior constituted “campaign finance violations.”
If so, what then defines campaign violations when Ms. Clinton brazenly destroyed nearly 30,000 subpoenaed campaign-era emails, ordered subpoenaed communication devices smashed, illegally hired a foreign national to find dirt on a campaign rival, and used three paywalls to hide her hush payments to British subject Steele to concoct a smear dossier—with help from Russian sources—to destroy her 2016 rival?
Letitia James, apparently for the first time in New York history, believes a bank was somehow wronged when its seasoned auditors viewed Trump’s assets, approved a loan to him, profited from his timely payments of interest and principles, and lodged no complaints against Trump or his company.
James apparently believes that Donald Trump is the first and most egregious real estate baron in New York history who inflated the value of his holdings. Her indictments thus supposedly have nothing to do with a left-wing political activist who ran for attorney general on promises to get Trump.
As far as Jack Smith, he supposedly was to be focused on Trump’s removal of classified presidential files to an insecure location at his Mar-a-Lago home and Trump’s “insurrectionary” actions on January 6. But he seems way beyond that now and is trying to put a gag order on the presidential frontrunner and to ensure Trump is in court during the 2024 campaign—challenging the very administration that appointed Smith in the first place.
In truth, Trump was the first ex-president in history to be indicted for a dispute with archivists over the status and security of removed classified files. Such disagreements were historically adjudicated bureaucratically rather than criminally, and certainly not with performance-art FBI swat raids into an ex-presidential residence.
Moreover, true insurrectionists do not instruct protestors to assemble peacefully and patriotically. Insurrectionists themselves do not try to overthrow governments while unarmed and accompanied by bare-chested buffoons with cow horns and slow-moving septuagenarians draped in American flags. And during an “insurrection,” unarmed “rebels” are usually not invited into the government quarters by supposed government doormen, among them perhaps 150-200 FBI informants. They are usually not shot and killed for the crime of entering a broken window while unarmed. And governments need not lie about the violence of insurrectionaries if they are truly insurrectionists.
Jack Smith’s problem—aside from his similar previous effort as special counsel to bankrupt and destroy the life and career of former Virginia governor Bob McDonald, a conviction overturned 9-0 by the Supreme Court—is that his indictments are so asymmetrical as to be surreal.
If the Department of Justice really wishes to prosecute insurrection, then it should concentrate on 120 days of arson, looting, killing, and violent protests that destroyed $2 billion in property, led to over 35 deaths, injured 1,500 law enforcement officers, and saw a federal courthouse, a police precinct, and a historic church torched by protestors, months of violent chaos planned and orchestrated by Antifa and Black Lives Matter, and enabled by leftwing inert mayors and governors.
The future Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, sought to organize bail for violent rioters. She boasted on television that the protests would not stop, should not stop, and would continue beyond the 2020 elections. Could she have at least suggested to the rioters to protest “peacefully and patriotically?” And just last week, President Biden praised that months-long violent summer of looting, violence, arson, and destruction, calling it “the historic movement for justice in the summer of 2020.”
Or Smith could investigate the well-orchestrated and increasingly violent pro-Hamas rallies. These are “insurrections” that have stormed the California legislature, occupied the Capitol rotunda, defaced and defiled iconic federal monuments and cemeteries, shut down key bridges and freeways, attacked law enforcement, and led to violence and assaults.
If Trump is guilty of removing files that he had the statutory right as president to formally declassify, then what was senator and subsequent Vice President Joe Biden guilty of when he stealthily and unlawfully removed hundreds of files, kept the removals secret (until his administration went after Trump for the same offense), and sloppily stored them in his insecure garage?
At each juncture of these extra-legal efforts, past precedents, former customs, and accepted traditions are being destroyed by the Left, whose endless miscarriages of justice are the real threats to constitutional government. And the more impotent these serial and unending gambits become, the more strident and desperate they appear.

Xi Jinping is in a struggle with China’s military, purging senior commanders to reshape it.
He wants generals ready and willing to go to war, analysts told Business Insider.
A Chinese invasion somewhere like Taiwan could drag the US into a Third World War, one analyst said.
Xi Jinping is fighting with China’s own military, seeking to purge commanders he sees as unwilling or unable to go to war, military analysts told Business Insider.
The Chinese leader is “trying to gain control of the military, and I think that he is thinking that he needs officers who are prepared to actually fight,” said Gordon Chang, a senior fellow at the Gatestone Institute and author of “China Is Going to War.”
“There is a sense that many of China’s general officers don’t want to fight,” according to Chang. “And so we really have a force led by an officer corps that is ambivalent about going to war.”
Since taking power in 2012, Xi has overhauled China’s military by cutting deep into its personnel, seeking to improve military-civilian cooperation, and reshaping its structure, among other reforms.
His efforts reached a crescendo on December 29, 2023, when Xi dismissed nine senior officers in one stroke.
Since then, reports and US intelligence have suggested the decisions were to root out corruption — a motive often cited when Chinese officials are abruptly dismissed.
However, to Chang, this theory misses the point.
“Because if that were the case, all of them would be sacked,” he said.
For him, Xi is likely purging officers who are reluctant to go to war.
He cited Chinese Air Force General Liu Yazhou, who cautioned against an invasion of Taiwan and received a suspended death sentence in February 2022, per the AsiaNews agency.
BI also spoke to Joel Wuthnow, a senior research fellow in the Center for the Study of Chinese Military Affairs at the National Defense University in Washington, DC.
He argued that rooting out corruption and readying China for war were aligned goals.
“The removals indicate that Xi should be concerned about the quality of people and equipment he has invested in over the last decade,” he said.
The nine senior commanders were involved in China’s Rocket Force, which would have a crucial role in any military campaign, said Wuthnow.

Here we go again. Every so often, some “brilliant” firearm prohibitionist comes up with the “insight” that if gun bans are unconstitutional, ammunition should be targeted instead.
This is akin to the old tactic of cracking down on ink and paper supplies as a means of curtailing First Amendment expression and is just as unconstitutional. We saw an attempt by the government to ban one of the most popular types of ammunition for America’s most popular rifle during the Obama/Biden administration, when ATF suddenly (and inaccurately) reclassified M855 rounds as “armor piercing.” That overreaching move not only failed to go the distance, it was followed by the resignation of the ATF’s then director, B. Todd Jones. Now, as Gun Control, Inc. continues to recycle the failed executive gun control schemes of the past, another attempt is underway to ban supposed “military grade” ammunition from public sale.
It goes without saying that there are certain types of technology that have both military and civilian applications. Thus, some companies serve both the military and civilian markets with the same or similar items. This includes Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence Missouri, currently operated by Olin Winchester, a private company. Lake City makes rifle cartridges for both the military and civilian markets, including in the highly popular 5.56×45 mm designation used in military firearms such as the M4 and in civilian firearms such as the AR-15.
This arrangement allows for economies of scale that benefit taxpayers, U.S. fighting forces, and Americans exercising their Second Amendment Rights. By serving both military and civilian markets, Lake City can maintain the machinery, infrastructure, staffing, and supply chain purchasing power to produce consistent, high-quality ammunition at affordable prices. It also allows the plant to “surge” its capacity when necessary to meet military needs during times of high demand, such as when U.S. forces are engaged in combat operations.
Moreover, while Lake City can sell certain types of its output on the civilian market, these sales are still subject to the same laws and regulations that govern ammunition sales from any other source. Lake City cannot, for example, sell armor-piercing ammunition in the private market because such sales are restricted under specific provisions of federal law. Certain types of ammunition might also be considered an explosive or destructive device under federal law, and restrictions and requirements that pertain to those categories would of course govern those rounds, no matter where or by whom they were produced.
It’s also worth noting that the U.S. government itself makes certain types of surplus military equipment available to the private markets in the U.S., either directly or through intermediaries. These include actual firearms once belonging to military armories – including semiautomatic firearms like the M1 Garand rifle, the M1 carbine, and the M1911 pistol – and once-fired military cartridge cases (including those produced by Lake City), which can be reloaded into usable rounds. Military equipment is ultimately funded by U.S. taxpayers, and if it is otherwise legal for civilian use and no longer needed by the services for the common defense, it makes sense it be made available to the public, rather than destroyed or stored at taxpayer expense.
Indeed, all this has gone on for many decades openly and without many complaints, even by anti-gunners.
The latest flap over Lake City selling ammunition to the public is the perfect example of how firearm prohibitionists across the public and private spheres coordinate in pushing a contrived narrative to generate fear and outrage and, so they hope, use it to crack down on Second Amendment rights. These interconnected activists, all pressing for the same agenda, pretend to act independently but are really part of a coordinated effort.
First, there were rumblings back in June 2022 that the government’s leading ammunition contractor might shut off the supply of its products to the civilian market. That plan, perhaps because of looming midterm elections, did not come to fruition at the time.
Then, a supposed “investigation” by the New York Times last November reported that Lake City has “pumped billions of rounds of military-grade ammunition into the commercial market.” That article claimed some of these rounds had been used in certain notorious and highly-publicized crimes. It even quoted the writings of one mass shooter who supposedly sought out Lake City ammunition to use in his attack. The article’s takeaway is that the U.S. government, and by extension the U.S. taxpayer, are “subsidizing” “military-grade” ammunition for sale to the general public that is being diverted to criminal use.
Of course, even taking the Times article at face value, it could also be read to say that billions of Lake City rounds are being bought and used by the general public in completely legitimate and constitutionally-protected ways. The Times does not claim, nor can it, that the rounds that Lake City makes available to the public are inherently more deadly or liable to be misused in crime than any other brand of ammunition of the same caliber. Again, taking the Times at its word, the rounds have been linked to 12 recent mass shootings. But if the Times is to be believed (and it shouldn’t be), hundreds of such crimes occur a year without any connection to Lake City ammunition whatsoever.
The Times apparent object in singling out Lake City is simply that the rounds are prolific, which means they influence the availability and price of 5.56×45 mm ammunition generally. And they have a tie to the government, which means highlighting and exaggerating misuse might give the anti-gun Biden White House an excuse for a crackdown.
But the Times reporting should not be taken at face value. First is the issue of how the Times is supposedly substantiating which brand of ammunition is used in which particular crimes. Firearms in the U.S., for example, bear mandatory identification marks and serial numbers that reliably allow them to be traced back to a particular manufacturer or importer, and even to a particular initial retail purchaser. Thus, when a claim is made about a certain type or brand of firearm being used in a certain crime, there is usually an ATF trace of a recovered gun that can back up (or disprove) that claim.
Ammunition, by contrast, is not required to be serialized, nor can the manufacturing and distribution data for individual rounds be determined with the same precision.
The Times report appears to rely mostly on the recovery of rounds or spent brass with what reporters or law enforcement officials believe to be Lake City headstamps on the back of cartridge cases. But assuming these non-experts in ammunition identification are right even about that, the headstamp says nothing about how the rounds or brass were actually manufactured or distributed. For example, maybe the rounds were reloaded into Lake City brass by a private company or person, perhaps even from brass discarded at a public shooting range. Maybe the round or the brass came directly from military stockpiles, including by unauthorized diversion. Simply put, there is no universally accepted or used method of tracking which brands of ammunition are used in crime. Meanwhile, agenda-driven reporters pushing a narrative are free to use whatever supposed evidence or hearsay they want to make these claims.
The Times “investigation,” however, had its intended effect, generating other “news” stories amplifying and expanding upon the narrative, as well as outrage from gun control advocates and anti-gun politicians (some of whom have had access to this information for years).
The most recent effort was spearheaded by none other than New York Attorney General Letitia James, who specializes in shamelessly wielding her official authority against political opponents of her own Democrat party. James is the nominal author of a letter written on Jan. 9, 2024, and signed by 19 other anti-gun Democrat state attorneys general, demanding that the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention:
“investigate the contracting and manufacturing practices that led to so many billions of military-grade rounds being sold into our communities, and to issue a public report with recommendations about how to end the diversion of military ammunition into civilian hands.” But the letter goes further, betraying the true agenda and purpose of the entire effort: “In the long term, we ask the White House to ensure that future production contracts prohibit the sale of military weapons and ammunition to civilians.”
It’s typical that the letter confuses the issue by conflating “weapons and ammunition,” even though no weapons (other than ammunition) produced under military contracts were implicated in the Times’s reporting. It also uses the scary-sounding buzzword “military-grade” to falsely suggest there is some important functional difference between Lake City rounds and other 5.56.45 mm rounds available on the civilian market. In fact, “military-grade” in this context simply means it meets specific technical specifications for materials, tolerances, consistency, quality control, and oversight, not that it is uniquely suited to military use, nor more deadly than other brands of the same round. As previously stated, Lake City can only offer rounds for sale to the public that are otherwise legal for commercial distribution. If anything, international accords that limit the use of certain ammunition designs in warfare arguably make true “military-grade” ammunition of a given caliber less likely to cause especially grievous wounds or suffering.
Restricting the sale of Lake City ammunition to the general public would severely curtail the availability of rounds for America’s most popular rifle, the AR-15, and drive up prices.
Reports indicate that Lake City Ammunition accounts for 30% of the commercial supply of 5.56×45 mm rounds in the U.S. Banning access to those rounds would not stop determined criminals who were willing to die or go to jail to perpetuate a heinous, high-profile crime. But it would make it much more difficult for law-abiding Americans to exercise their Second Amendment rights and to maintain competency with their legally-owned guns.
Of course, that last outcome is the entire point of the whole effort.

You had to know that 3D-printed guns were going to change things.
Gun control only works if the laws can restrict complete access to guns. They’ve never actually been able to do that, but when guns basically had to come through gun stores, it was easy to pretend they did.

When people started making their own guns–a practice that actually predates the nation’s founding–it was easy to ignore because it typically required a fair bit of knowledge, information that not everyone possessed.
The moment it was announced that you could make a gun that was completely 3d printed, everything changed. Gun control could no longer even pretend to be viable.
And a report out of the UK makes that very clear.
Now, Daly argues that it’s still easier to obtain a more traditionally-manufactured firearm, even in the UK, than a 3D-printed gun, but that’s not really the point, now is it?
With these files existing, even a complete and total gun ban, including door-to-door confiscation of firearms, wouldn’t be sufficient to keep the criminal element of any nation disarmed. They’d still get guns and there’s absolutely nothing anyone could do about it.
Sure, ammunition might be more problematic under such a scheme, but let’s also be realistic here, there will always be guns. The elites might support gun control, but that’s going to be gun control for you and me, not them.
As such, ammunition will be available.
And that means 3D-printed guns are going to be viable for criminals no matter what laws you put in place.
Remember, this is a report out of the UK. They have gun control laws that even California wouldn’t strongly consider passing. If they can’t prevent this sort of things, no one else is going to stop 3D-printed guns from ending up in criminal hands.

If anti-gunners throughout the world were open to learning the lesson, they’d see that any hope they had of disarming people are gone, so if they want to stop violent crime, they should start focusing on, you know, violent crime.
Alas, though, it’s not likely to happen. They don’t want to learn.

Gaza tunnels stretch at least 350 miles, far longer than past estimate – report

Senior Israeli defense officials now assess that Hamas’s Gaza tunnel network is between 350 and 450 miles long, far longer than previously believed, according to a Tuesday report.
The estimate reported by The New York Times is markedly higher than an Israel Defense Forces’ assessment last month that there are some 250 miles of Hamas tunnels under the Gaza Strip, and an astounding figure given the enclave is only some 140 square miles in total size.
The newspaper quoted Israeli intelligence officials estimating there are around 100 miles of tunnels under Khan Younis in southern Gaza, where IDF troops are engaged in intensive fighting as they search for Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and other terror commanders believed to be hiding underground.

Stopping the War Now Would Be a Security Disaster for Israel
After three months of war against Hamas, voices are calling for stopping the war and retreating. But it’s impossible to stop the war now. It would be a grave mistake and a security failure. We can’t stop it because Hamas will only increase its demands in the negotiations over the hostages. A complete stop of the fighting and withdrawal from Gaza will lead to the restoration of Hamas’ rule there, along with the recovery of its military capabilities. Then, we will see the next Oct. 7 sooner than expected.
It’s impossible to stop now because Israel has commitments to residents living close to the Gaza and northern borders, who need to return to their homes and be able to live there knowing they’re safe. No Israeli Would Ever Be Safe amid Capitulation to Hamas
Israel must destroy the military capabilities of Hamas and prevent its leadership in Gaza from holding on to power there. This means the IDF must not at this time, or in the near future, end the fighting and withdraw from Gaza. If the Hamas infrastructure remains in place and its senior leadership remains unharmed, then no Israeli can be safe.
An IDF withdrawal of forces from Gaza would be regarded as a capitulation to Hamas. It would be a complete sacrifice of the security of Israelis and would have significant strategic consequences.
We would all be at risk of being kidnapped by any Iranian proxy. No Israeli would be able to travel safely abroad without fearing abduction, and that is especially true for the young travelers who visit third world countries. Furthermore, even a weekend getaway in the north would be risky.
If Israel allows Hamas to remain in power in Gaza, they would only prepare for the next murderous assault from that border, while Israel’s deterrence for all of its enemies would be lost, and any will of moderate Arab nations to normalize their relations with Israel would diminish.
For Israelis to live with a modicum of security, the IDF must be allowed to complete its mission to destroy the Hamas military infrastructure above and bellow ground and remove its leaders.

The IDF reveals another Hamas tunnel under the Gaza Strip’s main north-south highway, this time in Nuseirat.
Troops of the 646th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade, elite Yahalom combat engineering unit, and other combat engineers, discovered and destroyed what the IDF says is a “strategic” Hamas tunnel, located under Salah a-Din road.
The tunnel, which is hundreds of meters long and around nine meters deep, crosses Wadi Gaza, also known as Besor Stream, the IDF says.
The IDF says the tunnel was used by Hamas gunmen to travel between north and south Gaza undetected.
Following the detonation of the tunnel below Salah a-Din road, the IDF says it has opened a new alternative route in the area.

I Saw How Hamas Is Embedded within Gaza’s Population
While Gaza is perceived by the world as an overcrowded, third-world territory, I saw a wholly different picture during 100 days in the reserves inside Gaza. Gaza City is a modern, well-developed city. Big houses, a big plaza, parks, well-maintained walkways right on the beach and so much more. It looks far more like Tel Aviv.
The world’s “most crowded”? Not by a long shot. Homes are loaded with fancy belongings, furniture, and appliances. Most places are bigger than my Tel Aviv apartment. Blaming their will to fight Israel on their poor living conditions does a disservice to the truth.
In most homes, every school and every public institution, the single most prevalent object seems to be a map of Israel. Of course, it doesn’t say Israel, as it refers to the entire territory as Palestine. They chose to inhabit an alternate reality, making it far more difficult to find common ground.
In every single neighborhood we were in, weapons, tunnels, explosive charges and launchpads were all conveniently located inside residential buildings. The Palestinian civilians who reside there are acutely aware of all this. Hamas operatives are fully aware that if they walk around unarmed in civilian clothing, the IDF is highly unlikely to view them as hostile.
Not only is Hamas embedded within the Palestinian population, the population is embedded within Hamas. Its ideology can be found in practically every home. Hamas would never have become this powerful without active assistance from the locals.

Iran Sent Flowers to Hostages’ Families in Attempt to Recruit Israelis as Spies
Israeli security officials said Iran set up several Hebrew social media pages and websites about the hostage crisis, which helped arrange for flowers to be sent to the victims’ homes.
The accounts also “tasked Israelis with photographing the residences of Israeli defense officials and other officials who appear frequently in the media and speak out against Iran publicly,” the Israel Security Agency said.
Iran also set up social media accounts on TikTok, Instagram and Telegram posing as Israeli far-right activists and impersonating the Israeli public broadcaster Channel 11.
In December, the ISA warned that Iranian security services were contacting Israelis over social media, posing as potential business partners, such as estate agents, couriers, or even online dating service providers.

Pathetic: As Hamas plays sick games with hostages 100 days in, Biden whines he’s losing patience with Israel
Pro-terror demonstrations in America and Great Britain increasingly feature signs supporting the Iran-backed Houthi terror group, which is responsible for the continuous missile attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea — signaling support for radical anti-Western ideologies, not merely opposition to Israel.
At a weekend rally in London, one prominent Palestinian activist said, “We must normalize massacres as a status quo.”
And Hamas released a sickening video Monday of one Israeli hostage revealing the deaths of two others.
President Biden should be using these moments to further marginalize anti-Israel voices on his left flank.
Yet the louder and more extreme those voices grow, the faster Biden runs away from supporting a fellow democracy battling a terrorist group responsible for the murders of dozens of Americans — and which continues to hold other US citizens hostage.
Biden’s more strident insistence that Israel transition to “lower-intensity operations” against Hamas in Gaza comes alongside political pressure on Jerusalem to abandon a planned defensive military campaign on its northern border against an Iran-backed terror threat 10 times larger than Hamas.
Israeli officials may be underestimating Washington’s determination to “contain regional escalation” in an election year — code for strong-arming Israel into permitting Iran’s existential threats to remain intact even if it leaves the Jewish state exposed to another Oct. 7 and deterred from acting against Iran’s accelerating nuclear program.
Israel has already evacuated roughly 100,000 people from towns bordering Lebanon out of fear the Hezbollah terrorist organization might unleash its own surprise invasion.
But Hezbollah is not a threat just to Israel’s border communities — with 200,000 rockets, including thousands of precision-guided munitions, it is capable of threatening Haifa and Tel Aviv in addition to the country’s critical infrastructure.
Israelis will not return to their homes in the north so long as Hezbollah remains across the border.
And waiting around for Tehran’s order to rain missiles down on Israel while the ayatollah races across the nuclear threshold is a status quo Israel’s leaders can no longer accept.
But if Biden can’t stomach 100 days of war against Hamas after the horrific scenes of Oct. 7, can anyone be confident he’ll green-light military support for an even larger fight in Lebanon?
Indeed, the president withdrew a carrier strike group off Israel’s coast and sent a senior adviser to the region to negotiate Israel’s surrender of territory to Lebanon in exchange for Hezbollah moving a few kilometers north.
All while letting Iran gain access to $10 billion.…
