Study examines how massive 2022 eruption changed stratosphere chemistry and dynamics

When the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted on January 15, 2022 in the South Pacific, it produced a shock wave felt around the world and triggered tsunamis in Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand, Japan, Chile, Peru and the United States.
It also changed the chemistry and dynamics of the stratosphere in the year following the eruption, leading to unprecedented losses in the ozone layer of up to 7% over large areas of the Southern Hemisphere, according to a recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and the University of Maryland.
Driving those atmospheric changes, according to the research, was the sheer amount of water vapor injected into the stratosphere by the undersea volcano. The location of the stratosphere is approximately 8–30 miles above Earth’s surface and is where the protective ozone layer resides.
“The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai eruption was truly extraordinary in that it injected about 300 billion pounds of water into the normally dry stratosphere, which is just an absolutely incredible amount of water from a single event,” said David Wilmouth, a project scientist at SEAS and first author of the paper.
“This eruption put us in uncharted territory,” said Ross Salawitch, professor at the University of Maryland’s Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center and co-author of the study. “We’ve never seen, in the history of satellite records, this much water vapor injected into the atmosphere and our paper is the first that looks at the downstream consequences over broad regions of both hemispheres in the months following the eruption using satellite data and a global model.”
The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai eruption was the largest explosion ever recorded in the atmosphere. The eruption hurled aerosols and gases deep into the stratosphere. Some material reached the lower mesosphere, more than 30 miles above the Earth’s surface, altitudes never recorded from a volcanic eruption. Previous studies found that the eruption increased water vapor in the stratosphere by 10% worldwide, with even higher concentrations in some areas of the Southern Hemisphere.
Wilmouth, Salawitch and the rest of the research team used data from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) aboard the NASA Aura satellite, to track not only how that water vapor moved across the globe but also monitor temperature and levels of chlorine monoxide (ClO), ozone (O3), nitric acid (HNO3), and hydrogen chloride (HCl) in the stratosphere for the year following the eruption. They then compared those measurements to data collected by MLS from 2005 to 2021 prior to the eruption.
The team found that the injection of water vapor and sulfur dioxide (SO2) changed both the chemistry and the dynamics of the stratosphere. In terms of chemistry, the SO2 led to an increase in sulfate aerosols, which provided new surfaces for chemical reactions to occur.
“Certain reactions that might not happen at all or only happen slowly can happen faster if there are aerosols available on which those reactions can take place,” said Wilmouth. “The injection of SO2 from the volcano allowed sulfate aerosols to form and the presence of water vapor led to the additional production of sulfate aerosols.”
The increased sulfate aerosols and water vapor kicked off a chain of events in the complex atmospheric chemistry that led to widespread changes in the concentrations of a number of compounds, including ozone.
The extra water vapor also had a cooling effect in the stratosphere, leading to a change in circulation, which drove decreases in ozone in the southern hemisphere and an increase of ozone over the tropics.
The researchers found that the peak decrease in ozone occurred in October, nine months after the eruption.
“We had this enormous increase in water vapor in the stratosphere with modest increases in sulfate that set off a series of events that led to significant changes in temperature and circulation, ClO, HNO3, HCl, O3, and other gases,” Wilmouth said.
Next, the researchers hope to continue the study by following the impact of the volcano into 2023 and beyond as the water vapor moves from the tropics and midlatitudes to the Southern Hemisphere pole, where it has the potential to amplify ozone losses in the Antarctic. The water vapor is expected to stay elevated in the stratosphere for a period of several years.

Three lawsuits attempting to bankrupt a constitutional scholar for giving the prior Republican president legal advice will cost him $3 to $3.5 million, John Eastman said Friday. Eastman was a target of Democrats’ illegal Jan. 6 Committee and has been harassed by the FBI and courts since assisting Donald Trump in 2020 constitutional litigation.
“This is what I call the authoritarian moment in our history,” Eastman told reporter Julie Kelly and podcast cohost Liz Sheld. “The whole premise here is: ‘The government has spoken and you continue to say otherwise. Therefore you must be lying.’”
Eastman’s legal defense fund has raised more than half a million dollars so far, “less than a third of what we’ve already incurred and less than about a sixth or seventh of what we’re likely to incur before we’re done,” Eastman said. To defend himself legally in a Georgia prosecutor’s case against Trump and dozens of his associates, Eastman needs to raise $1 million by February, he said: “I’m trying very hard not to completely deplete my wife’s retirement fund.”

Under a new Biden administration policy, illegal aliens who are deported from the United States no longer are forced to wait outside the country for up to 10 years before applying for legal status.
The law was meant to deter people from trying to live in the country illegally, the Washington Times reported.
Previously, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services would have denied any application for legal status under the so-called three-year/10-year rule. That meant that anyone without legal status for at least six months but less than a year had to depart and wait three years before applying to come back legally. Anyone in the country illegally for more than a year had to wait 10 years.
Emilio Gonzalez, who headed the USCIS during the George W. Bush administration, said the new Biden protocol is like the Clinton administration policy “don’t ask, don’t tell.” Under the 1990s policy, military applicants were not to be asked about their sexual orientation.
“We won’t ask you where you’ve been during your inadmissible period, and you don’t tell us. It’s sheer craziness,” Gonzalez said.
The new DHS policy states “noncitizen’s location during the statutory 3-year or 10-year period and the noncitizen’s manner of return to the United States during the statutory 3-year or 10-year period are irrelevant for purposes of determining inadmissibility.”
Robert Law, who led the USCIS policy office for the Trump administration, told the Washington Times the policy is “basically an invitation for any deported alien to pay the cartels to smuggle them back into the U.S. while they let the clock run out.”
The Times said the policy will apply retroactively. That means migrants previously denied can file motions to reopen their cases.

Denver has been plagued with crime and rising auto thefts in recent years.
Biden landed in Denver Tuesday afternoon for a campaign event and was greeted by Johnston at Air Force One.
A spokesperson for Johnston’s office confirmed that his car was stolen but declined to offer additional details about what had happened — or where.

Russia Takes Control of Iraq’s Biggest Oil Discovery for 20 Years
Preliminary estimates suggested that Iraq’s Eridu oil field holds between 7-10 billion barrels of reserves. Senior Russian oil industry sources spoken to exclusively by OilPrice.com last week said the true figure may well be 50 percent more than the higher figure of that band. In either event, the Eridu field – part of Iraq’s Block 10 exploration and development region – is the biggest oil find in Iraq in the last 20 years, and Russia wants to control all of it, alongside its chief geopolitical ally, China. This is in line with Moscow and Beijing’s objective of keeping the West out of energy deals in Iraq to keep Baghdad closer to the new Iran-Saudi axis and to “end [the] Western hegemony in the Middle East [that] will become the decisive chapter in the West’s final demise,” as exclusively related to OilPrice.com. The approval last week by Iraq’s Oil Ministry for Inpex – the major oil company of key U.S. ally Japan – to sell its 40 percent stake in the Block 10 region that contains the huge Eridu discovery leaves the way clear for Lukoil to take total control of the entire oil-rich area.
Lukoil had held a 60 percent stake in the entirety of Block 10, with the remainder held by the Japanese firm. However, from March it has been looking for ways to push Inpex out of the Block, and with it the last remnants of Western influence in the area. March saw Iraq’s state-owned Dhi Qar Oil Company (DQOC) formally approve the development of Block 10’s reserves, including for the whole Eridu field. Block 10 lies in the southeast of Iraq, approximately 120 km west of the key oil export route from Basra, and just south of the huge oil fields in and around Nassirya. The contract for Block 10 awarded to Lukoil and Inpex back in 2012 in Iraq’s fourth licensing round gives a relatively high remuneration per barrel rate of US$5.99, although at that point the vast Eridu field had not been discovered. In 2021, after some preliminary testing, Iraq’s Oil Ministry said it expected peak production of at minimum 250,000 barrels per day (bpd) from Eridu by, at that point, 2027. The senior Russian oil industry sources exclusively spoken to by OilPrice.com last week, believe peak production could run at least 100,000 bpd higher than the previous figure, contingent on whether the new reserves estimates are correct, although given delays in development since 2021, the date at which that will be achieved is now toward the end of 2029.

Progressives embrace victimhood to give themselves moral superiority, which often requires grossly distorted narratives instead of historical facts. Nowhere is this more apparent than in The Nation magazine, where two American Indian “activists” recently “debated” Should America Keep Celebrating Thanksgiving? They agreed that Thanksgiving needed to be “decolonized” and that Thanksgiving needed to refocus on the evil of the colonists.
That means centering the Indigenous perspective and challenging the colonial narratives around the holiday (and every other day on the calendar). By reclaiming authentic histories and practices, decolonization seeks to honor Indigenous values, identities, and knowledge. This approach is one of constructive evolution: In decolonizing Thanksgiving, we acknowledge this painful past while reimagining our lives in a more truthful manner.
Great. Let’s have that “truthful” conversation.
The big lie behind this “debate” is that colonial era “indigenous culture” was superior to Western culture. Scratch the surface, though, and you see that their complaint is not that the European colonists were evil but that, in the clash of civilizations, the Indian tribes lost.
The world—and the American Indians today—are far better for colonization. The truth is that all the colonial-era North American Indian tribes were nonliterate, militaristic, brutal, stone-age, and only steps removed from hunter-gatherers. Their decentralized tribal governance was a cause of constant war and bloodshed.
Nonliterate
None of the North American Indian tribes had a written language. They were without books to accumulate and transmit knowledge. They had no recorded histories before those Europeans created after 1492. Outside of adopting European language and writing, the American Indian tribes did not develop alphabets and writing in their native tongues until well into the 19th century.
Militaristic
The single best original source for studying the North American Indians through the colonial period is James Adair’s 1775 book, The History of the American Indians. James was “a trader with the Indians and Resident in their Country for Forty Years,” he married into the Chickasaw tribe and embraced the culture.
Adair states unequivocally that American Indians most valued military prowess. They measured that prowess “by scalps” and by the prisoners that a victorious warrior would bring back to the tribe to be enslaved, ritually executed, or adopted. It was on these measures that the Indians bestowed “all their war-titles, which distinguish them among the brave: and these they hold in as high esteem.”

The latest battleground state polling from my organization, the League of American Workers, validates that assessment, and points to potential seismic gains for the cause of patriotic populism among Hispanics this election cycle. Specifically, the latest survey highlights massive Hispanic dissatisfaction with Biden and leftist policies in the key battleground of Arizona, one of the most Hispanic states in America.
The overall mood of America darkens, primarily due to the economic anxiety caused by Biden’s mismanagement. Arizonans reflect that national malaise as only 18% of Grand Canyon State voters report that the American Dream is “still attainable.”

The Senate Judiciary Committee met today to discuss “The Gun Violence Epidemic: A Public Health Crisis.” One of the witnesses was Dr. Megan Ranney of the Yale School of Public Health. One of her interrogators was Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA). …
“Let me ask you this. Why do you think that Chicago has become America’s largest outdoor shooting range? Do you think it’s because of Chicago citizens, who have no criminal record, but who lawfully have a gun in their homes for protection, or perhaps for hunting? Or do you think it’s because of a finite group of criminals who have rap sheets as long as King Kong’s arm?” …
Dr. Ranney made the same statistical point at the state level:
“So Mississippi, Louisiana, Missouri actually have higher firearm death rates, obviously there’s certain … ”
Kennedy interrupted her. He was not going to let facts distract from his polemic. For the record, Louisiana is the second most murderous state. It is also the third lowest in life expectancy — one of the nine red states on the top ten list of places where citizens die young.
Ranney replied it was not her area of expertise. Nevertheless, Kennedy was determined to keep the focus away from the violence in his own backyard.
Kennedy: “What about Chicago?”
Ranney: “So I don’t live in Chicago. It’s not my primary area of research.”
Kennedy: “You don’t have an opinion on that?”
Ranney then made the point that gun deaths are caused by guns. She also, being an academic and not a politician, tried to answer the question she was asked.
“I think there is easy access to firearms, combined with environmental conditions and lack of great education. There have actually been studies showing that when you green vacant lots and repair abandoned buildings in urban neighborhoods, you see decreases in gunshots and violence as well as decreases in stress and depression in the neighborhoods around them.”
Kennedy, well aware that his intended audience wanted smackdowns, not discussion, dissed Ranney while piously insisting he was not dissing her:
“No disrespect Doc, but that sounds a lot like word salad to me.”

Report: Negotiators in Qatar Have Divided Hostages into Groups, Like Cattle
Negotiators in Doha, Qatar, over the release of further groups of Israeli hostages have divided them into groups and categories — like cattle, with each group to fetch a different price in the negotiation.
This humiliating exercise, itself a public relations victory for Hamas, will enable the terror organization to demand different prices for each group — far more than the three Palestinian terror convicts for every woman and child in the first six exchanges.
The result is a process that looks more like bartering over goods in a Middle Eastern bazaar than a discussion about human beings — all of whom were kidnapped in a terror attack, and all of whom are being held in violation of international law, without Red Cross visits.
The description of negotiations between Hamas, Qatar, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and the Israeli Mossad was published by Washington Post columnist David Ignatius on Tuesday evening.

The negotiators agreed on five categories of Israeli hostages for future releases, the knowledgeable source said. The five groups are: men too old for reserve military duty, female soldiers, male reservists, active-duty male soldiers, and the bodies of Israelis who died before or during captivity. The total is well over 100, but the source said he couldn’t provide a precise number as yet.
Hamas has expressed “willingness to negotiate on all five categories,” the source said. He added that parameters of the exchange — such as how many Gaza captives would be freed each day, how many Palestinian prisoners would be exchanged for each Israeli, and how much humanitarian assistance would be sent into Gaza — haven’t been worked out.
One complication is that Hamas has spread the hostages out among different groups — they did this with the Bibas family, whose infant was given to another terrorist group.
Already, previous exchanges have presumed that only women and children would be released — which has resulted in the cruel spectacle of mothers and children being liberated while husbands and fathers are still in captivity.
Israel had initially vowed not to negotiate at all with Hamas, which it says it wants to destroy. It has now been forced, though both domestic pressure and international pressure, to participate in a process in which it must differentiate among groups of hostages — and in which it is negotiating with Hamas, lending it legitimacy and allowing it to buy time and build its base of global support.

The poll, conducted by Spokeo, also found that 74.8 percent of American workers are concerned AI will impact their industry.
Spokeo reports, “Female respondents were slightly less concerned AI would impact their industry negatively compared to male respondents (72.5% compared with 76.6%).”
Concerns varied more by age, with 18-24-year-olds being least concerned about AI’s impact on their industry (66 percent) and those over 65 being most concerned (80.8 percent).
It isn’t all negative, however.
A 78.1 percent majority of workers believe AI could reduce some of the stresses of their jobs. Additionally, 76.7 percent think that AI “will reduce the number of working days in the week for the average American.”

After years of denying they had anything related to Seth Rich, the FBI and DOJ were caught lying over and over again. In September, a judge finally demanded the FBI and DOJ provide all they had in regard to Seth Rich and the FBI responded requesting another 66 years before releasing the information.
Now, a Federal Judge has just ruled the FBI must hand over evidence regarding former DNC employee Seth Rich’s murder.
This is big news since only one year ago, in October 2022, the FBI was attempting to bury the information on Seth Rich for 66 years.
No media outlet has covered the Seth Rich story as extensively as The Gateway Pundit.
Judge Amos L. Mazzant ruled the FBI must hand over Rich’s personal laptop, work laptop, a DVD, and thumb drive within 14 days.

“A California appeals court [Fourth Appellate District, Division One Court of Appeal of California] ruled Friday that the state may continue sharing the personal information of gun owners with ‘gun violence’ researchers,” The Western Journal reports. “California’s Department of Justice had been permitted to share ‘identifying information of more than 4 million gun owners’ collected by the state during the background check process for firearms purchases with ‘qualified research institutions,’ ostensibly to aid in the study of gun-related accidents, suicides and violence.”
The “personal information” includes “names, addresses, phone numbers, and any criminal records, among other things.” What “other things”?
Per the bill that “authorized” this massive privacy intrusion against citizens for claiming their rights (Assembly Bill No. 173), those include “a database of gun violence restraining orders, and a database of firearm precursor parts purchases.” In other words, that will include people who have never been charged with or tried for a crime, let alone convicted, and will identify people who bought parts that may later be declared verboten.

As the Israeli military prepares to resume the counter-terrorism operation in Gaza, President Joe Biden has placed conditions on IDF operations against the terror group Hamas, the Israeli and U.S. media report. The ceasefire, which began on November 24 as part of the hostages-for-terrorists deal, is expected to end on Tuesday or Wednesday — depending on the status of negotiations to secure the release of additional Israeli captives.
The Biden White House wants Israel to scale down its military operations once the ceasefire ends — reducing the momentum of the Israeli ground offensive inside the terrorist-infested territory. “President Biden has apparently told Israeli government officials that when the IDF ground campaign moves into the southern part of Gaza, maximum efforts must be made not to produce further significant displacement of civilians,” the Israeli TV channel i24NEWS reported Tuesday. “In a briefing by senior administration officials with reporters, the U.S. leader has repeatedly said the IDF should not “replicate” what took place in northern Gaza during the first part of the ground incursion, during which hundreds of thousands of civilians were moved to a humanitarian zone in southern Gaza.”
The news comes amid growing pressure from Democrats on the Hill to put ‘conditions’ on Israel, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.
“Israel agreed on Monday to a two-day extension of its truce with Hamas to gain the release of more hostages, a priority of President Biden. But another idea is gaining ground among Democrats that is more dangerous: condition U.S. aid on how Israel conducts its war of self-preservation,” the WSJ noted. “The stipulation is said to be merely that Israel follow international law. But since Israel does follow international law, and the U.S. already can withhold foreign assistance on human-rights grounds, the condition is unnecessary—but not harmless. During wartime, it would signal to Israel’s enemies that the U.S. has gone wobbly on the campaign to destroy Hamas.”
On Sunday, The New York Times also reported the Biden administration’s “warning’” to Israel over its future conduct of military operations against the Islamic terror group in Gaza. “United States has warned Israel that it must fight more surgically and avoid further mass displacement of Palestinians,” the NYT reported Sunday. “The statements are the Biden administration’s strongest warning to Israeli officials to date about the next phase of their military operation.”

Remember the 1,000 boat flotilla that was supposed to sail from Turkey to Israel a week ago? I was the only one who called it a hoax.
The media fell all over themselves last week claiming that a 1,000 boat flotilla was about to sail from Turkey to blockade Israel. The event was to take place last Wednesday.
I was the only one who called it a hoax.
And I was right.
It was all fake news, based on the crazy claims of one guy, Volkan Okçu.
Not one news outlet checked for a shred of corroboration. They didn’t ask him who else was involved, the names of any boats, who is organizing it, how they planned the logistics for such a large project. The media simply didn’t do its most basic job, to check sources.
I looked at Volkan Okçu’s tweets and saw that he had no idea what he was doing and then denied he was the organizer altogether.
And since then, not one media outlet admitted that they were fooled. They just let the story disappear…
I’m not saying this to brag. I spent no more than ten minutes researching this. But I am pointing out that this is a pattern we have seen a great deal during the Gaza war alone.
A large percentage of the news surrounding this Gaza war is as fake as this flotilla, and has just as little corroborating evidence. The sources for much of Gaza news are just as unreliable as Volkan Okçu is. The news comes from one doctor, one “witness,” And the news media just runs with it…

An immigrant politician from the city of Limerick at a council meeting this week called for the execution of the individuals involved in last week’s Dublin protests.
As the Gateway Pundit previously reported, five people, including children, were stabbed near a school in Dublin, Ireland, last Thursday by an Algerian immigrant. Ordinary Irish citizens who were tired of seeing their elected officials pushing open borders and coddling immigrant criminals responded with mass rioting.
The Limerick Post revealed that Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) member Abu Kalam Azad Talukder, who immigrated from Bangladesh in 2000, responded with genuinely sick comments on Monday. He called the people involved in the protests “criminals” who should be “shot in the head.”

A highly contentious ruling emerged from the Hamburg regional court’s youth chamber on Tuesday as eight of nine men accused of a sickening gang rape will avoid jail time.
In a haunting September 2020 incident, a group of young men, aged 19 to 23, violently assaulted a defenseless, intoxicated student in a Hamburg city park. The ordeal involved repeated rape, severe mistreatment, and robbery, with the victim being a 15-year-old girl, according to RMX News.
The suspects are predominantly of migrant backgrounds, including nationalities such as Polish, Egyptian, Libyan, Kuwaiti, Iranian, Armenian, and Afghan. The incident occurred post-midnight, following the victim’s departure from a friend’s birthday party.
The verdict concludes a lengthy trial that began in May 2022. Throughout the extended trial, involving 96 witnesses and several experts over 68 days, compelling evidence emerged, including DNA findings affirming the presence of the suspects’ semen on the victim.
Despite the severity of the charges, including video evidence of the crime that was reported to have been deleted, the court’s application of juvenile justice statutes resulted in suspended sentences for eight of the defendants, according to German media outlet BILD.
The sole perpetrator to receive a custodial sentence, a 19-year-old Iranian national, was sentenced to two years and nine months in juvenile detention. Amidst the trial proceedings, reports highlighted that the convicted displayed a lack of remorse.

Northern Europe was surprised by the ‘sudden onset’ of Winter, causing disruption and dangerous conditions in several countries.
Liberal Europeans had barely finished complaining that 2023 was ‘the hottest year on record’ when – wouldn’t you know it – temperatures were freezing cold at the very start of winter.

Leaked ‘secret plan’ reveals Biden admin’s $1B-plus proposal preparing for Snake dam breaching

A draft agreement negotiated behind closed doors by the Biden administration and advocates of tearing down the lower Snake River dams says the science is clear on removing the dams.
In what some are calling a “secret plan” developed with four tribes, Washington and Oregon, the federal government would spend more than $1 billion to prepare for breaching the four hydroelectric dams and to promote fish populations.
The draft agreement stops short of a federal decision to remove the dams, although it said the U.S. government continues to be “committed to exploring restoration of the lower Snake River, including dam breach.”
The draft agreement has not been made public, but the Tri-City Herald obtained a leaked copy.
No one involved in the litigation is permitted to discuss the draft agreement, including those who were excluded from negotiations on a a long-running federal court lawsuit.
The Biden administration negotiations have been controversial because they have not included electric ratepayers, among others, who would pay the price for changes to how the hydroelectric system is managed on both the Snake and Columbia rivers.
Rep. Dan Newhouse, R-Wash., has reminded the Biden administration that Congress has the exclusive authority not only on any decision to breach the Snake dams, but also the exclusive authority to direct the study of removing them or to authorize replacement resources.
He was joined by Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash.; Russ Fulcher, R-Idaho and Cliff Bentz, R-Ore.
The proposed agreement was negotiated as part of the federal lawsuit that is paused until Dec. 15 to allow plaintiffs in the lawsuit to discuss the draft agreement and next steps on the dams with select tribes and litigation parties and to approve proposed actions and commitments.
On Dec. 15 the plaintiffs and federal defendants will either request a multi-year stay of the lawsuit to implement the proposals and commitments in the draft agreement or they will return to court, according to Earthjustice, which is representing a coalition of fishing, conservation and renewable energy groups in the lawsuit.
The lawsuit challenges the most recent federal plan for hydropower operations of the four lower Snake River dams in Eastern Washington and Idaho for not doing enough to save threatened salmon as pressure has mounted to tear down the dams. The federal court case has been on hold for two years.
Parties to the litigation have pushed to tear down the lower Snake River dams, from Ice Harbor Dam near the Tri-Cities upriver to Lower Granite Dam near Lewiston, Idaho.
Science of saving salmon
The 34-page agreement negotiated by the Biden administration’s Council on Environmental Quality quotes a 2022 report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that says “the hydrosystem is a primary limiting factor in the recovery of 10 of the 16 salmon and steelhead stocks in the interior Columbia River Basin.”
It said that the risk of extinction for endangered fish is moderate to high.

The science supports dam removal, among other actions, and “overwhelmingly supports acting and acting now,” the agreement said, quoting from the NOAA report, “Rebuilding Interior Columbia Basin Salmon and Steelhead.”
However, Northwest RiverPartners, which opposes breaching the dams, said as it prepared to review the agreement as a party to the lawsuit that it would be considering mounting evidence that shows that the greatest threat to salmon survival is climate change impacts.
It quoted a 2021 peer-reviewed NOAA study published in “Communications Biology” that said the dominant driver toward extinction in Chinook salmon was rising ocean temperatures.
Among spending in the draft agreement is $5 million for Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to identify the best ways to meet the region’s energy resource needs and clean energy goals while accounting for breaching of the dams and the loss of their hydropower.

The Bonneville Power Administration will consider buying tribal owned or sponsored power under the Tribal Preference Authority, which allows federal agencies to prioritize purchases of tribal owned energy, the draft agreement said.
The wide-ranging draft agreement also includes plans to study replacing other services made possible by the lower Snake River dams, including barging, transportation and recreation.
The draft agreement also considers the rest of the Columbia River Basin.
Salmon would be reintroduced into the upper Columbia River Basin and improvements would be made in the basin to support lamprey, white sturgeon, bull trout and other native fish and shellfish.
Proposals for the mid Columbia River, such as managing predation and fish passage improvements, could cost as much as $200 million a year over a decade.
The Environmental Protection Agency would provide $85 million to assess and reduce toxins in the basin, which includes $17 million of grants already awarded to tribes.
As previously announced, NOAA will spend $60 million for salmon hatchery infrastructure.
The Bonneville Power Authority would increase its spending on fish and wildlife programs and would give the four tribes and two states authority over $100 million over a decade.
It also would start a pilot program to expand the use of grants and multi-year agreements with them.

A source within the Israeli government told Breitbart News on Tuesday that U.S. President Joe Biden’s pressure would lead to Hamas surviving the war intact, rather than allowing Israel to destroy Hamas or remove its military and governing capabilities.
In recent days, the White House has acknowledged that Israel intends to continue fighting Hamas after the current “pause,” sought by Biden to allow the release of hostages, ends later this week.
“The Israelis have been pretty clear that once the pauses are complete and the hostage exchanges [sic] are over that they intend to continue their military operations against Hamas,” White House adviser John Kirby said on Monday (Israel does not hold “hostages”; it is releasing convicted Palestinian terrorists).
However, the White House is no longer clearly stating that it shares that goal. And the Israeli government privately believes Biden is prepared to tolerate the survival of Hamas, despite the fact that Hamas and other terror groups would see that as a victory.
The reason Israel believes this is Biden’s goal is that the U.S. administration is imposing onerous conditions on the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) regarding its operations in Gaza, such that defeating Hamas has become almost impossible.

Iran is taking over the Strait of Hormuz islands – the only exit for US carrier Ike
For much of this year and before 7 October, naval gazers had about four areas to look at. First, the ongoing fight in the Black Sea with the Russian blockade weaponizing hunger despite regular Ukrainian successes there. The Russians were also keeping navies busy in the high north and the North Atlantic.
Second, the Chinese have been repeatedly upping the ante in the South China Sea and then saying “but you did it” after each event. This has been region-wide but escalating and perhaps reached a head ten days ago when they deliberately turned on their active sonar next to an Australian warship with divers in the water. The Aussie divers were ‘lucky’ to only be injured.
Third, Critical Underwater Infrastructure (CUI) was starting to grab headlines as gas pipes, data cables and power interconnectors in various locations blew up or were severed.
Finally, we had the decades-old maritime presence in the Persian/Arabian Gulf. There were operations way back in the ’80s such as Operations Prime Chance and Earnest Will to protect shipping there – and then Praying Mantis against covert Iranian minelaying, continuing on and off to this day with multiple countries and coalitions all chipping in under the watchful eye of the US Fifth Fleet HQ in Bahrain.
Post 7 October, the enormous US-led build-up of warships in the Eastern Med added a fifth front and whilst it has kept things limited there, for now, a sixth front has appeared in the Red Sea and beyond as Houthis fire missiles and drones towards Israel, hi-jack ships by helicopter in the southern Red Sea and employ Somalis to hijack ships by more traditional methods, albeit failed, in the Gulf of Aden.
Given the centrality of Iran to all of this, it is ironic that the one place that has been relatively quiet since 7 October has been the Gulf itself: even the traditional flashpoint, the Strait of Hormuz, the only way in or out of the Gulf, which has Iran on one side of it.
Rather like an English sports team collapsing in the latter stages of a tournament – inevitable and so strangely reassuring – this is changing. Iran is now doubling down on its ‘ownership’ of three contested islands in the Strait, Abu Musa and Greater and Lesser Tunb.
This is particularly on point right now, as the US Navy aircraft carrier Dwight D Eisenhower and her accompanying escorts – the Ike carrier strike group – have just passed in through the Strait to the Gulf, accompanied by a French warship and joining several British ones already based out of Bahrain.
I won’t delve too deeply into the history of the islands, suffice it to say the UK formally withdrew from there almost exactly fifty-two years ago to the day, leaving things in a state of flux. Iran moved its navy into Abu Musa before we’d finished packing. Only a few days later, an understandably aggrieved UAE – on the other side of the Strait – took their historically founded counterclaim to the United Nations Security Council which “deferred consideration of this matter to a later date”.
The headline in December 1971 could have been “UK leaves mess, UN fails to resolve” and not for the first time.
The dispute has rumbled on in many forms ever since, but recent developments do suggest that now is the perfect time for those who thrive off disruption and chaos to get involved on as many fronts as possible.

2014 Looming Clash between Iran and Egypt?
An article in Al-Monitor quotes Egyptian officials raising the possibility of Egyptian intervention into Yemen.
Egypt is fighting an Islamist insurgency movt in the Sinai peninsula. It does not want an Iranian proxy controlling access to the Red Sea and possessing ports to hold and facilitate transport of weapons to the insurgency.
In the 1960s, Egypt sent in tens of thousands of troops into Yemen’s civil war. As many as 26,000 Egyptian soldiers lost their lives in a fierce war that saw the use of poison gas. The total human toll of that conflict is not precisely known but probably exceeded 100,000.
Israel for its part already has its hands full interdicting the flow of Iranian weapons from East Africa and through the Sinai to the Gaza Strip.
Red Sea access controlled by Iranian proxies would hugely complicate these efforts.
The Houthi conquest of Yemen may represent the opening act in a more expansive war that could involve a number of important regional actors traditionally aligned with the United States.

Regarding Abu musa, that’s an interesting name for an island I did not heard of previously and that it refers to moses, there’s a landmark in Saudi Arabia with a rock burnt black called Wadi Musa, amateur archaeologists have explored around there and there’s videos, along with the chariot wheels underwater between Saudi and Egypt . Guessing that now that I ran is in possession there’s not much evidence on the island named after Moses of him being there, the map doesn’t allow me to read the names of the landmarks that I’m seeing nor do I know where what a Musa is directly,
If and when Iran and Hezbollah activate their tactical armaments there is a good chance the US Navy could have its ass handed to them.

The youngest captive held by Hamas’ military faction, the Al Qassam Brigades, in Gaza has reportedly died, according to recent statements. The group alleges that an Israeli airstrike resulted in the deaths of three hostages, including this young captive, in the Gaza Strip. However, these claims remain unconfirmed.
Earlier, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) expressed their belief that Kfir and his four-year-old brother Ariel were taken to Khan Younis, presumably by a different Palestinian militant faction, potentially the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

FBI Agent’s Car Stolen at Gunpoint in Brazen Daylight Carjacking in Washington, DC

An FBI agent fell victim to a carjacking incident in the eastern end of Capitol Hill on Wednesday afternoon.
The FBI has confirmed the incident, which occurred in broad daylight, and has since launched an investigation in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Carjacking Task Force.
In an official statement obtained by NBC Washington, the FBI confirmed the carjacking, stating, “At this time, we can confirm that an FBI employee was carjacked on the afternoon of November 29. The vehicle was recovered, and the FBI Washington Field Office and the Metropolitan Police Department’s Carjacking Task Force are investigating.”
The statement provided no further details about the incident.

Letitia James’s Office Hits Back After Deutsche Bank Testimony Blows Hole in New York AG’s Case Against Trump

New York Attorney General Letitia James’s office responded to testimony by a Deutsche Bank executive that could have torpedoed her civil fraud case against Trump.
Radical Marxist New York Attorney General Letitia James is seeking $250 million in ‘damages’ when there is no victim in this fraud case and she is also seeking to ban Trump and his sons from operating any businesses in New York. She accused Trump of inflating his assets and defrauding lenders and insurance companies.
A Deutsche Bank executive who worked to approve at least one of Trump’s loans testified on Tuesday that it is “atypical, but not entirely unusual” to reduce a client’s asset values and still approve a loan.
“A Deutsche Bank AG executive gave testimony that could bolster Donald Trump’s defense in his civil fraud trial, telling a New York judge that prospective clients can get loans even after reporting a net worth far higher than the lender’s own calculations.” Bloomberg reported.
“David Williams, who worked on at least one of three loans Deutsche Bank made to Trump in the years before he was elected president, testified Tuesday that it’s “atypical, but not entirely unusual” for the bank to cut a client’s stated asset value by 50% and approve a loan anyway, as it did with Trump,” Bloomberg reported.
Williams testified that Trump’s stated assets are merely an opinion and a difference of opinion in asset values does not disqualify the potential borrower from a loan.
“It’s just a difference of opinion,” Williams said, according to Bloomberg.
Trump’s defense attorney argued that Deutsche Bank conducted its own due diligence and made their own decision to loan Trump money.
“The bank conducted its own due diligence. The bank had no problem with a $2 billion or a $3 billion difference,” Trump’s attorney Christopher Kise said.
Kise also argued that the German bank wasn’t harmed because it “didn’t change what it did based on what President Trump submitted.”
Kevin Wallace, a lawyer from Letitia James’s office hit back at the defense lawyer.
“I think the idea that you can’t lie to a bank is pretty well established,” Wallace said.
Judge Arthur Engoron sided with the attorney in Letitia James’ office and said, “that the mere fact that lenders were happy doesn’t mean that the statute wasn’t violated.”
