Reader’s Links for July 9th, 2023

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Why is it that I no longer have people telling me to get injected for C-19? There were quite a few of my family members and friends doing this back then. In fact they were so adamant that some still don’t talk to me. Yet, those who do are now silent on the subject.

Why do people not trust government statistics on the economy? Inflation is coming down, they say. Well maybe it is, but it certainly is not at 3.4% (Canada) or 4.1% (U.S.). No, if the same measuring sticks that were used back in the early 80s, we get north of 11% on real inflation:

We have been lied to constantly. We have a shrinking trust horizen. John Rubino:

    • Shame he didn’t speak out a lot earlier, now the only way out of the mess is military action. Britain and Europe can still restore their Governments and Societies but they will have a long, hard fight before they succeed

    • In the last 24 hours the 128th Transcarpathian Mountain had to be withdrawn from the Zaporozhzia (sp?) front.

KIA=50%, who knows how many injured?

This is the second 128th to be so utterly ruined. The first suffered extraordinary losses, even relative to the high casualty figures for the AFU in general. These Hungarian-speakers were put in the worst positions, so-called “suicide operations”.

    • 128th Transcarpathian Mountain was just withdrawn from the Zaporozhyyze front. Over 50% KIA, who knows how many injured.

This is the second iteration of the 128th. They were put in the absolute worst positions. Destroyed for nothing, just thrown like meat, just a blood sponge.

      • Not knowing the details of your post Yucki, are you saying that Ukraine is using Russia to murder vast amounts of the ethnic Hungarians who they have press-ganged into battle? Or am I missing something big here please?

        • YES –
As well as Russian-speaking Ukrainians. The first to be thrown into the grinder. Mostly used up now.

          AND –
When Kiev counted enemy dead, they included their own Russian- and Hungarian- speaking conscripts as _Dead Russians_!

          To boost their clobber reports.

            • I don’t know.

Pro-Russian media in English no longer mentions it. Most of those sources are dubious anyway. They depend on Kremlin talking points and find creative excuses for every criticism.

They don’t really care about the ostensible reason for the SMO – defending Russian-speakers in Ukraine.

Otherwise they’d pay attention to “details” like this. Or, for example, Russia’s failure to eliminate enemy strongholds right on the border of the Donbass. A year and a half later, petal-mines still rain down on the urban agglomerations “annexed” to Mother Russia.

Those of us who have family in the region get a closer look. But we can’t talk freely to our loved ones in a surveillance state. By now they’re totally messed up – brainwashed and so stressed they’re like strangers. The priest at the Orthodox Church is counseling all of us.

    • AFU 128th brigade was withdrawn from Piyatikhatki, replaced by 117 / 118 brigade (these are NATO reserves).

Destroyed tanks T-72EA, PT-91 Twardy and armored personnel carrier M113 of the Armed Forces of Ukraine somewhere in the Zaporozhye region. This is the first recorded loss of the PT-91 tank delivered from Poland.

        • It surely is.
I didn’t realize it was this bad. A video of a small village in mourning. Emptied of boys and men.

  2. Governors Of The Mind: “We Must Remake History”

Authored by Jeffrey Tucker via DailyReckoning.com,

The assault on enterprise of the last few years — meaning not the biggest politically connected businesses but smaller ones reflecting vibrant commercial life — has taken very strange forms.

Ever since The New York Times said the way forward was to “go medieval,” the elites have been attempting just that. But this medievalism has not come at the expense of Big Data, Pharma, Ag or Media.

It mainly hits products and services that impact our freedom to buy, trade, travel, associate and otherwise manage our own lives.

What began in lockdowns mutated into a thousand forms. That continues with daily new outrages. Maybe it’s not random.

It was never really about health care. It was about the exercise of power over the whole population by a tiny elite in the name of science.

The government locked down society, and then tried to make us get the shots through hook and crook, an experimental medicine we did not need and which was proven neither safe nor effective.

Since those days, other strange things have been unleashed: the campaign to eat bugs, end fossil fuel, abolish wood-burning pizza ovens, impose all-electric ovens and cars, stop air conditioning, own nothing and be happy with your digital consumption and even block out the sun, while indulging in every farce such as pretending that men can get pregnant.

Many cities are falling apart, abandoned by well-to-do residents and consumed by crime. It’s all madness but maybe there is rhyme to the reasons for all this?

    ‘We Must Remake Society!’
In August of 2020, Anthony Fauci and his long-time co-author wrote a piece in Cell that called for “radical changes that may take decades to achieve: rebuilding the infrastructures of human existence, from cities to homes to workplaces, to water and sewer systems, to recreational and gatherings venues.”

They wanted social distancing forever but that was only the start of it. They imagined the dismantling of cities, mass social events, the end of international travel and really all travel, no more owning pets, the end of domesticated animals and a strange non-pathogenic world that they imagined existed 12,000 years ago.

We can’t go back, they said, but we can “at least use lessons from those times to bend modernity in a safer direction.”

There we have it. Preserve “essential” services (and people) but get rid of everything else. The lockdowns were merely a test case of a new social system. It’s not capitalism. It’s not socialism as we’ve come to understand it.

It feels like corporatism but with a twist. The big businesses that gain favor are not heavy industry but digital tech designed to live off scraped data and power the world with sunbeams and breezes.

There’s nothing new under the sun. So where did this strange new utopianism come from?

    The Counter-Revolution of Science
Three years ago, Matt Kibbe and I recalled that in 1952, F.A. Hayek wrote what became The Counter-Revolution of Science. The idea is that in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a new conception of science was born, which reversed a previous understanding.

Science was not a process of discovery by research, but a codified end state known and understood only by an elite.

This elite would impose its view on everyone else. Hayek called this “the abuse of reason” because genuine reason defers to uncertainty and discovery while scientism as an ideology is arrogant and imagines it knows what is unknown.

I did not have time to reread the book but Kibbe did. I asked him if Hayek said anything that touched on our current problems. His response: “This book explains everything.”

That’s quite the recommendation. So I dug in. Yes, I had read it years ago but every book from the before times has a different feel and message in the after times.

It is indeed prescient. Hayek explores in great detail the thinkers of the early 19th century — successors to and reversers of the original French Enlightenment — and its origin in the writings and influence of Henri Saint-Simon (1760–1825).

Simply put, Saint-Simon dreamed of a world without privilege of birth or inherited wealth. The aristocracy can be damned for all he cared.

He imagined a world of what he called merit but it was no merit by means of hard work and enterprise as such.

It was a world run by geniuses or savants with unusual intellectual gifts. They would comprise the managerial and ruling elite of society.

    The Council of 21
His preferred system of government would consist of 21 men: “three mathematicians, three physicians, three chemists, three physiologists, three men of letters, three painters, three musicians.”

The council of 21! I’m sure they would get along great and not be corrupt in the slightest. And they would surely be benevolent!

We would find out who these people are by having votes placed at the grave of Isaac Newton (Saint-Simon’s god of choice) and eventually the consensus concerning the elite council would be chosen.

They would not be a government as such, at least not as traditionally understood, but elite planners who would use intelligence to shape the whole society the same way that scientists understand and shape the natural world.

You see, to his way of thinking, this is far more rational than having an hereditary aristocracy in charge. And these men would in turn deploy their rationality in service of society, which would be enormously inspired by it, just as MSNBC is so enthused for Dr. Fauci and his friends.

    Saint-Simon wrote:

Men of genius will then enjoy a reward worthy of them and of you; this reward will place them in the only position which can provide them with the means of giving you all the services they’re capable of; this will become the ambition of the most energetic souls; it will redirect them from things harmful to your tranquility. By this measure, finally, you will give leaders to those who work for the progress of your enlightenment, you will invest these leaders with immense consideration and you will place a great pecuniary power at their disposition.

So there you go: The elite get unlimited power and unlimited money and everyone will aspire to act like these people and this aspiration will improve the whole of society.

It reminds me of the pre-modern system in China in which only the best students could enter into the class of the mandarins, which were the nine levels of high-ranking officials in Imperial China’s government.

    Governors of the Mind
Indeed, Saint-Simon invited his followers to “consider yourselves as the governors of the operation of the human mind.”

He imagined “spiritual power in the hands of the savants; temporal power in the hands of the possessors; the power to nominate those called to fulfill the functions of the great heads of humanity, in the hands of everyone.”

Saint-Simon lived a life that oscillated between wealth and poverty, and regretted that condition would befall any man of his genius. So he cobbled together a politics that would protect him and his ilk from the vicissitudes of the market.

He wanted a permanent class of bureaucrats that would be completely insulated from the liberal world that had been celebrated only a quarter century earlier by the likes of Adam Smith.

Here was the core of what Hayek called the counter-revolution of science. It was not science but scientism in which freedom for everyone is a hell, geniuses seizing control was the transition and permanent rule by savants to shape the human mind was heaven on Earth.

The best book I’ve seen that captures the essence of this dream is Thomas Harrington’s The Treason of the Experts. They turn out to be not altruists or competent overseers of society but cowardly sadists who rule with career-driven cruelty and refuse to admit when their “science” produces the opposite of their stated goal.

“Scientism” as an ideology is the reverse of science as traditionally understood. It is not supposed to be the codification and entrenchment of an elite class of social managers but rather a humble exploration of all the fascinating realities that make the world around us work.

It is not about imposition but curiosity, and not about norms and force but facts and an invitation to look more deeply.

Saint-Simon celebrated science but became the anti-Voltaire. Instead of freeing the human mind, he and his followers imagined themselves to be governors of it. Anthony Fauci followed in that tradition.

Their actual goal is to become permanent “governors of the operation of the human mind.”

  3. The ooint is to divide people, isn’t it?

    https://www.timesofisrael.com/nj-jews-reel-after-kosher-baker-rejects-synagogues-order-for-rainbow-pride-treats/

The memo upset some local Jews who felt it was inappropriate for the [Jewish] federation charity, which serves Jews of all denominations, to make a judgment against a Jewish-owned kosher business whose owner believed he was following Jewish law [because his rabbi had told him this was the Jewish law].

Mittel [ of the Federation ] told JTA [news service] that he has spoken to Ben-Shimon since the story was published, and that the two had a positive conversation. Saying that his bakery has been visited by “obnoxious” people since news of the cancellation came out, he said it was he and not LGBTQ people who had become victim to intolerance.

    • If you can get the commemts to display, they’re so polarized that they are unintentionally and intentionally funny, especially when someone asks a question in one comment and the response comes as an answer in the follow-up comments.
      ——-
Question: Another bakery can refuse to sell cakes for a Bar-Mitzvah or Jewish wedding or bris because Judaism is an affront to their beliefs. Do the Jews who support the new right to discriminate ever think things through? ….

Answer: We have enough Jewish bakers.

Question: He was already selling baked goods to a Conservative synagogue to where people would drive on Shabbat and eat his baked goods. So wasn’t he was already “affirming something clearly condemned in the Torah”?

Answer: The synagogue presumably never asked. for cakes that said “Hey, let’s drive on Saturday!”
      ++++±++++

      • Pretty sure the torah never said anything about driving a car so they should be safe there. But the first answer reminds me of a funny paper that was going around called, “Hebonix” If you google, you shall find.

“Mountain Shmountain, you want you should get a nosebleed?”

        • As far as I know, Jewish schilars across the spectrum agree that the Torah’s edict against igniting fires applies to conbustion engines. Reform Jews say that the Law is optionally binding, so it’s okay to drive. Conservative Jews have published a written response that says you can drive to the nearest synagogue in Saturday, but in Israel you don’t need to drive to get to the nearest one. Orthodox Jews either don’t drive or park close enough that they can pretend that their judgjy neighbors didn’t notice. It’s all very logical and only a fool would ask for a cake that says “Drive on Saturday.”

          • Judaism is the religious system that I knew the very least about, so this is more question than statement.

But if the point is to not work on the sabbath, then whatever course of action is the least like one’s actual profession would be in order. For example, if one is a shepherd say, and you want to take your kids to a ball game on Saturday, then that should be a mitzvah as it has nothing to do with tending sheep.

It feels to me that 5000 years of interpreting the simple has led to an absurd set of rules which do the exact opposite of the original intent. Like the story we did years and years ago here, where a Jewish community in Oz. placed a wire in the trees around a section of downtown so Orthodox Jewish women I think it was, could go have coffee or whatnot because it was technically inside the home since the wire defined the home.

I have details wrong its been years since we looked at this. but my point is why do a work around? Go with the intent and if you don’t want to, don’t. But why cheat it and say you did?

          • Your donkey or camel deserves a day of rest too.

It’s impossible to explain Shabbat, you’ve got to experience it over time to appreciate it as a gift. It’s not a mitzvah, it’s a law.[*]

Separation from the secular world is a healthy exercise. Time to just be with family and friends. To sit under a tree and just think.
            ___
[*]Making love with your spouse on Shabbat – that IS a mitzvah.

            • “Time to just be with family and friends. To sit under a tree and just think.” See that is exactly how I figured it was supposed to be.

So when I see people going to enormous lengths, often doing many times the amount of work to not do work, one wonders if the point got lost a long time ago.

Turn on a light and read a book. You don’t need to hire a non-Jewish person to turn on a light. That has to be more work than just turning on a light.

Or do I have that wrong? I am merely speculating here. There is vast amounts I do no not know about this. But when one reads the 4th Commandment:

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God …Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”

It really doesn’t seem like it needs a lot of analysis.

Don’t work one day a week. Try to think on God. Spend time with loved ones.

The rest feels like 5000 years of philosophers trying to find something to do.

              • Don’t work one day a week. Try to think on God. Spend time with loved ones.

                That’s it. Plus something special.
-Save during the week to serve an extra treat.
-Luxuriate in love-making for a whole afternoon.
-Give your kids your full attention.

No need to feel guilty about being self-indulgent. It’s the Law, right?

    • Would you ever get muslims to announce they must have homo pride celebrations in their mosque and anyone who disagrees must go through “ally training”??

      • Answer: Don’t worry, we have ally trainers with rainbow hijabs in standby just in case.

    • Times of Israel is all in with the DIE agenda.
      All the to-ing & fro-ing, bloviating, jooo-eat-jooo.
      Phooey.

Democrats Freak Out and Sue Texas Governor Greg Abbott After He Unleashes New Method to Stop Biden’s Border Invasion (VIDEO)

Texas Governor Greg Abbott triggered the leftists on Friday after announcing the Lone Star State has moved forward with a new plan to deter illegal immigration.

As Fox News reported Friday, Abbott previously announced that Texas would be installing its “marine barrier installation” to deter border crossings. This is a set of orange buoys meant to act as “floating border barriers.”

This is part of Operation Lone Star, an operation started by Texas Republicans to stop the flow of illegal aliens crossing the southern border. One could say this qualifies as a unique solution to a huge problem.

    WATCH:

According to the Washington Post, the barrier includes a layer of webbing to stop people from swimming underneath it. The marine barrier installation is expected to span 1,000 feet in the stretch of river near Eagle Pass.

Texas officials say it will take approximately two weeks to set up the orange buoys across the Rio Grande River. According to Texas Department of Public Safety director Steve McCraw, this barriers will save lives.

Anytime they get in that water, it’s a risk to the migrants. This is the deterrent from even coming in the water.

According to the Washington Post, the barrier includes a layer of webbing to stop people swimming underneath it. The marine barrier installation is expected to span 1,000 feet in the stretch of river near Eagle Pass.

Predictably, liberals are freaking out. David Donatti, an attorney for the far-left American Civil Liberties Union whined that the barrier was a “blight on Texas’s moral conscience.”

The floating balls will not address the real and important reasons people are coming to the United States. The buoys are a blight on Texas’s moral conscience.

Alarmed at the possibility this remarkable method will stop the border invasion encouraged by Joe Biden, his enablers have resorted to suing.

Abbott’s message to them can be summed up in three words: bring it on.

While Abbott’s confidence is remarkable, some recent Court decisions suggest that a case may not be a slam dunk for Texas. We all know how wobbly John Roberts and Brett Kavanaugh are.

  6. Iowa Governor Signs Bills Restricting Sexual Books, Teaching ‘Gender Identity’ and Sexual Orientation in Elementary Schools
    By Cassandra MacDonald May. 28, 2023 8:15 am138 Comments

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has signed bills that prohibit elementary school teachers from giving lessons on gender identity and sexual orientation.
The newly signed bills also prohibit non-religious books depicting sexual acts from school libraries and requires schools to notify parents if a student requests people use pronouns or names that do not match what is on their birth certificates.

The new law on instruction is similar to Florida’s original Parental Rights in Education Act and only applies to kindergarten through sixth grade.

The bill was opposed by every Democrat in the state legislature, according to a report from The Hill. Their efforts to block the bills were fruitless as Republicans hold strong majorities in both the state House and Senate.

Parent approval will also be required before schools can administer surveys

It wasn’t that long ago that Mitt Romney was threatening former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard for suggesting the US was funding biolabs in Ukraine.

Back in March 2022, RINO Senator Mitt Romney accused former Democrat Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of spreading ‘treasonous lies’ for simply talking about the US-funded biolabs in Ukraine.

“There are 25+ US-funded biolabs in Ukraine which if breached would release and spread deadly pathogens to US/world.” Gabbard said at the time.

We must take action now to prevent disaster. US/Russia/Ukraine/NATO/UN/EU must implement a ceasefire now around these labs until they’re secured and pathogens destroyed,” she added.

  8. Crime-Ridden Los Angeles Reinstates Controversial Zero Bail Policy, Claiming Bail Infringes Constitutional Rights
    By Jim Hoft May. 28, 2023 7:45 am236 Comments

The controversial zero bail policy in Los Angeles has been reinstated on the grounds that it violates the suspects’ constitutional rights.

The zero bail policy was reinstated following a ruling by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge, Lawrence Riff, who granted a preliminary injunction that prohibits the city and county from requiring cash bail from individuals who have not yet been arraigned.

The ruling came in response to a lawsuit titled Urquidi vs. Los Angeles, which seeks to put an end to the practice of cash bail.

“Being jailed for even short periods of time may cause them to lose their jobs, their housing, or custody of their children,” according to the lawsuit. “They suffer all the harms of confinement in a jail cell even though a large portion of them will never be formally charged with any crime, let alone convicted.”
