Social Media Influencers File Lawsuit Over Montana’s TikTok Ban

A group of social media influencers has filed a lawsuit over Montana’s TikTok ban.
The state became the first in the nation to ban the Chinese social media app last week.
TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has ties to the Chinese Communist Party — which has led many on both sides of the aisle to determine that it is a risk to national security.
The Montana law, which goes into effect in January, prohibits TikTok from operating in the state and Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store from offering it for download to customers.
“To protect Montanans’ personal and private data from the Chinese Communist Party, I have banned TikTok in Montana,” Gianforte tweeted on Wednesday

Ukraine Expands Weapons Training For Children As Bakhmut Reportedly Falls

Only two months ago the mainstream media widely circulated a video which they said showcased “shocking footage” of Russian school children training with military weapons in programs designed to prepare them for the military. The programs were widely criticized as “indoctrination.”
Of course, Ukraine has also been involved in weapons training for children and these efforts have only increased in recent months as the city of Bakhmut, an epicenter of the fighting for many months, has reportedly fallen to Russia’s Wagner Group. CNBC has briefly reported on the “Defense of Ukraine” program at the military-patriotic center for schoolchildren in Lviv. The center was opened this month with plans to open dozens of other training facilities for children across the country in the near future.
The western city of Lviv has been a primary relocation point for children escaping the war in the east, so it’s not surprising that the Ukrainian government would seek young recruits for the war effort there.
The issue is not so much the training as it is the double standard – Russia institutes weapons training classes for kids and it’s insidious indoctrination. Ukraine does it and it’s “patriotic.”

US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Washington did not place any restrictions on the use of its weapons by Ukraine for attacks in Crimea.

MAY 20 2023 – NEW YORK TIMES – This Year’s G7 Summit Doubles as a Club for Unloved Leaders
The relatively weak approval ratings for President Biden and his Group of 7 partners highlight the fragility of free societies facing deep political divides.
They come from far corners of the globe, speak different languages, span the ideological spectrum and range in age from 43 to 80. But one thing President Biden and the other leaders of the Group of 7 meeting in Japan this weekend have in common? They’re not all that popular at home.
For Mr. Biden and his counterparts from the world’s leading industrial powers, it is an age of democratic discontent when electorates seem perpetually dissatisfied with the presidents and prime ministers they have chosen. Each leader is in hot water for different reasons, but their shared struggles highlight the fragility of free societies in a time of deep political and cultural divisions.
That has made this year’s summit meeting in Hiroshima, Japan, something of a “lonely hearts club,” in the phrase of one specialist, where unloved leaders can commiserate over their domestic troubles and trade ideas for how to get back into the good graces of their voters. A few days away from home to engage peers on the world stage can be a welcome relief for battered leaders, a chance to strut and posture and play the role of statesman shaping the forces of history.
But their troubles have a way of following them and can limit their options and influence. Mr. Biden started his morning on the opening day of the three-day meeting on Friday not with an elevated discussion of affairs of state but with a half-hour phone call back to Washington to check on negotiations with Republicans over the more prosaic yet profoundly consequential issues of spending and debt. He ended the day by skipping out about 90 minutes early from the leaders’ gala dinner on Miyajima island to take another call from home on the spending talks.
“The upshot,” said Suzanne Maloney, director of the foreign policy program at the Brookings Institution, “is an environment in which the leaders of the world’s most powerful democracies have to engage with an ever more challenging world, even as they’re on shaky ground at home. This can fuel doubts among our allies and overconfidence among our adversaries, and leave us all more vulnerable as a result.”
Survey data compiled by Morning Consult in recent days indicated that the leaders of only four out of 22 major countries studied had approval ratings above 50 percent: Narendra Modi of India, Alain Berset of Switzerland, Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico and Anthony Albanese of Australia. Mr. Modi, who is in Hiroshima as an observer, is the envy of the town with a 78 percent approval score, though this is in a country where religious divisions are exploited for political gain and the prime minister’s top political opponent was kicked out of Parliament for defamation.
No G7 leader, by contrast, could muster the support of a majority. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy, elected just last fall, fared best with a 49 percent approval rating, according to Morning Consult, followed by Mr. Biden with 42 percent, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada with 39 percent, Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany with 34 percent, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of Britain with 33 percent and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan with 31 percent. President Emmanuel Macron of France trailed the pack with a dismal 25 percent.
Mr. Kishida managed to do better with the approval rating of his cabinet, which hit 52 percent in a recent poll. That was the first time it surpassed 50 percent in eight months, fueling speculation that he may call a snap election to take advantage while he’s ahead. But it was unclear whether the new poll was the beginning of a period of more sustained support, or just an aberration before he slides again.
“My instinct is the low polling numbers are more a reflection of growing polarization in a number of these societies,” said Michael Abramowitz, president of Freedom House, a Washington-based organization that encourages democracy around the world. “Biden could be paving the streets with gold and half the country would disapprove. Obviously, democracies need to do a better job, but there’s little evidence that authoritarians can do a better job.”
The disenchantment toward the current leadership is proving to be a test of the staying power of democracy at a time when it has come under pressure. Mr. Abramowitz’s group, which tracks democracy nation by nation, has found that freedom has retreated around the world 17 years in a row, amid rollbacks in places like Hungary and Poland. While former President Donald J. Trump has called for “termination” of the U.S. Constitution to return him to power, Mr. Biden often says that he sees his mission as defending democracy.
Amid the general sourness, each leader is confronting distinct problems. Mr. Macron, who won re-election just last year with 58.5 percent of the vote, saw his support plummet when he pushed through an increase in the retirement age to 64 from 62, touching off violent street protests. A poll released this month found that Mr. Macron would lose a rematch to Marine Le Pen, the far-right leader he defeated last year.
Likewise, if elections were held now, recent surveys show that Mr. Sunak’s Conservative Party would lose to the Labour Party in Britain, Mr. Trudeau’s Liberal Party would lose to the Conservative Party in Canada, and Mr. Scholz’s Social Democratic Party would lose to the Christian Democratic Union in Germany.
Some political veterans attribute the weakness of the G7 leaders to economic anxiety following the Covid-19 pandemic. “There seems to be a wave of dissatisfaction sweeping our democracies,” said Carl Bildt, a former prime minister of Sweden. “I think the return of inflation, long gone, might have something to do with this.”
Inflation has certainly sapped support for Mr. Biden, along with the crisis at the southwestern border, fear of urban crime, anger over government spending and concerns over the president’s age as he asks voters to give him a second term keeping him in power until he is 86.
The best thing Mr. Biden has going for him politically at the moment is the likelihood that he might face Mr. Trump again next year, a rematch that his strategists assume would galvanize Democrats and independents who are not enthusiastic about the president but are inexorably opposed to the former president. Even so, according to polls, it is not a given that the president can beat his predecessor a second time, and Mr. Biden’s peers in Japan are deeply worried about a Trump return to power, remembering him as a disruptive, even dangerous, force.
This is not the first time the Group of 7 has gathered with its leaders underwater politically at home. But John J. Kirton, director of the G7 Research Group at the University of Toronto and a longtime student of the bloc, said such fallow periods typically happen when the leaders’ home countries are afflicted by severe recessions or stagflation, which is not the case now.
“At such low-in-the-polls times, the G7 summit becomes the ultimate lonely hearts club, when the leaders share their political pain, bond with one another because of it, and discuss what is working in each country to get it and perhaps them back on track,” Mr. Kirton said. “This is one way that the summit serves as the committee to re-elect the existing leaders back home.”
But Mr. Abramowitz argued that the political troubles of the G7 leaders should be taken as proof that democracy works. “Unlike authoritarian leaders, if democratic leaders don’t get the job done, they’ll be voted out,” he said. “Accountability is a strength of democracies, not a weakness.”

America First Legal has launched a government-wide investigation into Microsoft’s apparent prioritizing hiring H-1B Visa holders over American workers.
The legal organization has fired off Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests with the Department of Labor, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Department of State, and the Department of Justice.
According to AFL, “the government and the private sector continue to put the American people last to propel their open borders agenda – accountability is long overdue. America First Legal is determined to expose any government involvement in this anti-American hiring scheme.”

A California teacher who was once named “teacher of the year” has been arrested for allegedly having sex with an underage student.
As Fox News reported, Law enforcement authorities arrested 38-year-old Tracy Vanderhulst, a math teacher at Yucaipa High School, on Thursday night around 11 PM. Vanderhulst was charged with statutory rape.
The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department said the arrest came following an investigation into allegations she had sex with a minor.
“Investigators and the Yucaipa Calimesa Joint Unified School District worked cooperatively to ensure a thorough investigation into this matter was completed,” the San Bernardino’s Sheriff’s Department said.

Former President Barack Obama is among “500 Americans” banned from entering Russia in response to a new round of US sanctions.
On Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry published a list effectively blacklisting hundreds Americans from the country with immediate effect.
Individuals are banned by the Russian government for supplying Ukraine with arms and persecuting Americans who sought to stop Joe Biden’s certification as president on January 6, according to a press release issued by the ministry.
“The attached ‘list-500’ also includes those in government and law enforcement agencies who are directly involved in the persecution of dissidents in the wake of the so-called Storming the Capitol,” the ministry states.
“It is high time for Washington to learn that not a single attack against Russia will go without a strong reaction. The principle of inevitable punishment will be consistently applied, whether we are talking about tougher sanctions of discriminatory steps to hinder the professional activities of our citizens.
The Russian government has repeatedly questioned the legitimacy of the Biden administration’s prosecution of Americans who protested at the US Capitol on January 6.
“They weren’t just a crowd of robbers and rioters,” Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters after a 2021 meeting with Joe Biden in Geneva. “Those people came to the US Congress with political demands. Four hundred people, over 400 people had criminal charges placed on them…they’re being called domestic terrorists. They’re being accused of other crimes.”
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has warned Capitol rioters are being “persecuted” by the US government.
Late-night TV hosts Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers. MSNBC hosts Rachel Maddow and Joe Scarborough, CNN Anchor Erin Burnett and NBC host Brian Williams are also among Americans barred entry from Russia.
Sens. J.D. Vance, Katie Britt and Eric Schmidtt and 45 members of the US House are among US lawmakers that are blacklisted.
Military officials are also on the list, including Secretaries of the Army and the Air Force, Christine Wormuth and Frank Kendall and USAF Chief of Staff General Charles Q. Brown Jr. Former Secretary of Defense James Mattis was sanctioned for being on the board of General Dynamics, and ex-CIA director George Tenet as a board member of In-Q-Tel.
The ministry also announced on Friday that Russia will continue to deny US requests for consular access to detained Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gerschkovic. Gershkovich was arrested on March 29 by Russia’s Federal Security Service while reporting in the city of Yekaterinburg. He is detained on allegations of espionage that The Wall Street Journal and the US government deny.
This move was triggered by the US refusal last month to allow visas to Russian journalists who wanted to cover Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s visit to the United Nations, the ministry said in a statement.
“Washington should have learned a long time ago that not a single hostile attack on Russia will go unpunished,” it added.

A migrant woman who came to the United States from Mexico about ten months ago was arrested in New York City after leaving her newborn baby boy in a bathroom trash can.
The migrant is in the United States seeking asylum.
Lucia Garcia, 21, was covered in blood when she was arrested at Staten Island University Hospital just after 1 a.m. on Saturday.
Police arrived at the hospital lobby after Garcia was spotted by an NYPD officer who was working security.

This may be the world’s largest ever gathering of Satanists – and it’s about to begin at a Marriott hotel in downtown Boston.
In a candle-lit room set aside for Satanic ceremonies, a neon sign welcomes you to The Little Black Chapel. A raised altar stands at one end, a white pentagram on the floor in front of it.
The ritual being performed here is an “unbaptism”, in which participants symbolically reject religious rites performed when they were children.
“No names,” says a Satanist who agreed to let me witness their ceremony, as long as they aren’t identified.
They wear a floor-length, hooded cloak and a black face mask. Their hands are bound with rope, which is then cast off to represent liberation. Pages are torn out of a Bible to symbolise overturning their Christian baptism.

It’s clear the experience was powerful for them.
“As a gay child, being told you are an abomination and should be destroyed, warped a lot of my thinking. Finding The Satanic Temple has really helped me embrace logic and empathy.”
The Satanic Temple is recognised as a religion by the US government, and has ministers and congregations in America, Europe and Australia.
More than 830 people snapped up tickets for its late April convention, dubbed SatanCon.
Members say they don’t actually believe in a literal Lucifer or Hell. Instead, they say Satan is a metaphor for questioning authority, and grounding your beliefs in science. The sense of community around these shared values makes it a religion, they say.
They do use the symbols of Satan for rituals – for example when celebrating a wedding or adopting a new name. That might include having an upside-down neon cross on your altar while shouting: “Hail Satan!”
For many Christians, this is serious blasphemy.
“That’s not wrong,” agrees Dex Desjardins, a spokesperson for The Satanic Temple. “A lot of our imagery is inherently blasphemous.
“We’ve got folks who wear inverted crosses. And our opening ceremony did have the ripping up of a Bible as a symbol of oppression, especially oppression of LGBTQ folk and women, and also the BIPOC community, and pretty much anybody who’s grown up with religious trauma, which is a tremendous number of our members.”

Members of the Satanic Temple know their use of Christian materials is blasphemous to some people, but say they aren’t setting out to upset anyone
The Satanists say they respect everyone’s right to choose their faith, and they’re not trying to upset people.
But Christian protesters from many denominations have gathered outside the hotel, carrying signs warning of damnation.
“Repent and believe the Gospel,” urges one. “Satan rules over all the children of pride,” says another – the letters of “pride” shaded in the rainbow colours of the LGBTQ Pride flag.
“We are hoping to show God that we do not accept this blasphemy, and that we Catholics have not abandoned the public square to Satanists,” says protester Michael Shivler, from a conservative Catholic group.
Convention-goers in the lobby eye the protest outside. “They called us ‘dope-smoking masturbators’,” one man reports. “Oooh, sky daddy is mad with me!” someone else jokes.
Responses to the protests ranged from apathy to glee
Hellbillies, horns, and Satanic self-pleasure
The event takes up the whole fourth floor of the hotel. The Satanists fill it with androgynous goth chic, flamboyant robes, hand-painted horns, diabolical tattoos, and high-maintenance moustache choices.
Most people here are old enough to be parents, and several are. I spot at least one pushchair.
Presentations are given, including one called “Hellbillies: Visible Satanism in Rural America”, and a seminar on Satanism and self-pleasure.

Political activism is a core part of The Satanic Temple’s identity. It believes religion and the state should be kept separate, and frequently files lawsuits in the US to defend the distinction. Their point is serious, but they relish bringing satire and outrageousness to the fight.
In Oklahoma, for example, they asked to erect an 8ft (2.4m) Satanic statue at the state capitol when a monument of the Ten Commandments was put up, noting that the First Amendment requires all religions to be treated equally. (The Commandments were ultimately removed after a court battle.)
Decoding the symbols on Satan’s statue
The Temple also advocates for abortion access, arguing that everyone should have autonomy over their own body.
Earlier this year, it opened an online clinic based in New Mexico, which provides abortion pills by mail.
It has also developed an abortion ritual for people terminating a pregnancy – which is designed to be comforting and involves reciting an affirmation before the abortion – and argues its members must be religiously exempt from abortion bans that would stop them performing it.
That rationale has drawn criticism from some quarters, including in Catholic newspaper the National Catholic Register which called the ritual “nothing more than a grotesque parodying of religious rituals and symbols”.
The Yellowhammer Fund, which finances low-income people seeking abortions, declared that “putting your dollars and trust in grassroots organisations that have been doing this work for decades” was a better way to support abortion access.
In a hall packed with supporters, the directors of TST’s campaigns present updates on their work. Successes are greeted with whoops, applause, and the sign of the horns.
Another project drawing headlines is After School Satan Clubs – slogan: “Educatin’ with Satan”. The Temple would rather keep religion out of schools, but wants to counter faith groups coming in to evangelise to pupils.
So where local people have asked it to, it tries to launch an After School Satan Club, focused on community service, science, crafts and critical thinking.
Opponents say it’s frightening children, but TST says its content is demon-free. They have a kids’ song – My Pal Satan – with a bopping animated goat, and the lines: “Satan’s not an evil guy, he wants you to learn and question why. He wants you to have fun and be yourself – and by the way there is no hell.”
‘Satan loves you!’
Dozens of artists and vendors have set up stalls to sell Satanically inspired crafts. They have everything from “Satan Loves You!” beanies, to crocheted toys modelled on the Baphomet – a goat-headed Satanist symbol with wings.
The Satanic Temple is selling its own T-shirts too. The group doesn’t take membership fees, and is kept running largely off donations and merch sales.

A newly launched children’s book, titled Goodnight Baphomet, draws coos from bystanders.
The Satanic Temple’s code of guiding principles – the Seven Tenets – prioritises empathy, control over one’s own body, and respect for other people’s freedoms, including the freedom to offend.
Translate that into a kids’ book, and it includes rhymes like: “Respect everyone’s right to be, especially when they disagree. If their words make you mad, set them free – don’t be sad!”

Araceli Rojas, who flew from California to be here, finds the tenets relatable and easy to apply.
“I feel like I’ve always been quote-unquote a Satanist, I just didn’t know it.”
She says she first learned about TST through TikTok in 2020. “At that point I looked into it. A little scared, I think, like most would be. And I really wanted to make sure that they weren’t sacrificing babies! Then I started getting into the culture, and the scene, and I started to join meetings… and eventually I realised no, they’re not, it’s just a symbol that they use and it’s genuinely really good people.”
Chatting around the merch stalls, many people say their intro to The Satanic Temple came from the 2019 documentary Hail Satan?, directed by Penny Lane, which explores the Temple’s principles and early activism.
TST says it boosted membership from perhaps 10,000 in 2019, to more than 700,000 today.
Those gathered in Boston include local government staff, medics, engineers, artists, people in finance, a social worker, a therapist, and a circus performer. Many belong to the LGBTQ community. Plenty are married to Christians – or at least to non-Satanists.
Members tend to lean to the left politically, but there’s no political test to join and the Temple will not endorse any party or candidate.
Lucien Greaves, The Satanic Temple’s co-founder, arrives with personal security, dressed in black and carrying a Thermos. “English breakfast tea. I got it from a shop that sells British stuff.” He smiles when I accidentally say “bless you!”
Greaves (a pseudonym) started the movement a decade ago with a friend, Malcolm Jarry (also a pseudonym). They shared a commitment to religious freedom, and opposing what they see as Christianity encroaching on legislation.

News outlets, especially in the US, often present The Satanic Temple as attention-seeking pranksters pretending to be a religion, something he strongly objects to.
“People are hesitant to take anything we say at face value, but I feel like everything we say is pretty straightforward and we’re not misrepresenting ourselves at all.”
If you’re trying not to look like trolls, was it wise to name your abortion clinic “Samuel Alito’s Mom’s Satanic Abortion Clinic”, after the Supreme Court judge who backed the decision to remove the federal right to abortion? And then put it on a T-shirt?

“Part of the consideration was refusing to yield to this idea that everything must be sober and humourless to be authentic at all,” says Greaves.
“My thinking on that was – nothing could be more serious than us opening a telehealth clinic. I just would hate to see us lose any sense of humour.” Greaves has had to adjust his life to deal with the personal risks he faces as America’s most prominent Satanist.
“I moved at some point within the past four years and I don’t even have people over, because I don’t want to have to move again.”
Some TST members feel unable to acknowledge openly that they’re involved, citing risks to their safety. Members who have been outed have lost their jobs, lost their children in custody battles, and found fake bombs under their cars.
Chalice Blythe, spokesperson for the Temple’s religious reproductive rights campaign, received online harassment in the middle of SatanCon, after footage went viral of her tearing a Bible during the opening ceremony.
It’s not the first time she’s been threatened. In 2016, a family member leaked her details online and a gunman turned up at her home.
The gunman “said ‘this is what I’m here to do – I have this gun with that bitch’s name on it.’ I know they went to jail.
“Legally changing my name, I’ve had to do that.”
As far as she’s concerned, it’s worth it. “If my enemies are people of a crazy evangelical mindset who want to take my rights away – those are the kind of enemies I’m proud to have.”

Typhon Nyx, in his 30s, is one of many TST members who uses an alternative name in the community – a “Satanym”, as they call it. He says he moved from atheism to Satanism only recently.
“Satanism stands for everything I believe in,” he says. “Including bodily autonomy, compassion, respect, science. And Satan represents those who were cast out, those who think differently.
“I never found my friends being accepted in the Christian circles. The appeal of Satan is that he is the accepting one, the inclusive one, and someone I can more identify with.

L.A. tech CEO found dead under mysterious circumstances, family seeking answers

A vigil was held Saturday night for a tech CEO who was found dead under mysterious circumstances.
The body of Beau Mann, 39, was discovered in Santa Monica on May 8, nearly a year and a half after his disappearance.
On Nov. 30, 2021, Mann was last seen at a 7-Eleven in Studio City when an Uber picked him up from the store and dropped him off on Berkeley Street in Santa Monica.
He had been in contact with his family two days prior, but a text to 911 was the last time anyone heard from him.
Mann’s remains were found in the courtyard of an abandoned property on the 2900 block of Santa Monica Boulevard, according to LAPD. The remains were identified by the L.A. County coroner through dental records.
The cause of the death, however, has not been released. Many questions remain about the circumstances surrounding Mann’s death and loved ones are still seeking answers.

His family believes foul play was involved, pointing to the fact that he bought a bag of ice at the store before taking an Uber, a sign he was intending to go home.
Mann was the founder of SoberGrid, an app designed to help recovering addicts. Mann was also in the middle of planning his wedding to fiancé Jason Abate when he disappeared.
Abate has been dedicated to finding him from the start.
“What did alarm me was the fact that he went to 7-Eleven and had programmed his destination and was to go home after that,” said Abate. “So he went to 7-Eleven and he bought a bunch of stuff for him home like cleaning stuff and a big bag of ice because anyone who knows Beau knows he loves to chew on ice and his ice maker didn’t work so none of that surprised me.”
What was inexplicable, however, was a sudden change of direction during the Uber ride home.
“When someone is going to do their grocery shopping and they’re buying ice to go home, and that’s where they’re scheduled to go home, it doesn’t make sense for him to suddenly change his address to 1338 Berkeley Street and during that change, he texted 911 and used the app’s emergency feature,” said Abate.
Mann’s family has hired a private investigator to try and piece together the details.
The vigil held Saturday night was a time for friends and loved ones to remember the service and impact Mann brought to those around him.
“There’s a lot of questions and I wish I had the answers,” said Julie Gallegos, a friend. “It’s just heartbreaking because he was such a giving person that he deserved so much better than this.”
On Facebook, his family and friends thanked those who helped look for Mann:
“Beau was a beautiful soul who spent the better part of his life helping others. We miss his infectious smile and positive attitude every day. We know his spirit will live on through his company and passion, Sober Grid, as it continues to help those struggling with the grip of addiction.”

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the incident happened just after 4 pm on Thursday near the intersection of Hill Street and 6th Street in LA’s jewelry district.

On Friday, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) wrote the FBI demanding they turn over a document alleging a bribery scheme involving then Vice President Joe Biden.
The document in question is not classified.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Sunday said the FBI is poised to turn the damning document over to the Oversight Committe.
But later today the FBI told Republicans to pound sand – the agency penned a letter to Comer they will not be turning over the document.

Native American Man Killed By Border Patrol Shortly After Calling Border Patrol On Trespassing Migrants

Raymond Mattia a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation was shot and killed by border patrol agents at his reservation in Southern Arizona.
According to KVOA Raymond Mattia called U.S. Border Patrol agents after he discovered illegal immigrants were trespassing in his yard.
A family member told KVOA Raymond “called to request for assistance because there were multiple illegal immigrants who had trespassed into his yard and he wanted assistance getting them out of his property.”
According to the same family member who wished to not be identified, when Border patrol agents arrived to the scene Mattia exited his home and was shot dead shortly after.

the epoch times – Smallpox Vaccine Recipients Died From Heart Inflammation, Autopsies Find
Several U.S. military personnel who received a smallpox vaccination died from heart inflammation, and others hadn’t recovered from the same inflammation years after first experiencing the condition, an in-depth review of medical records has found.
Autopsies of two male military members in their 20s who suddenly died showed that they had heart inflammation, or myocarditis. There were also signs that heart inflammation contributed to the deaths of two others, one an 18-year-old male and the other a 23-year-old female.
Researchers also found that 348 members survived myocarditis or a related condition, pericarditis, but that it took at least months for each to recover, with some still not having recovered years later.
Some 2.5 million service members received a smallpox vaccine between Dec. 1, 2002, and Dec. 31, 2016, the time period covered in the study.
The lead researcher of the study, which was published by PLOS One in May, declined to comment. Nearly all of the researchers are employed by the Defense Health Agency (DHA). They wrote in the paper that the findings “draw attention to potential long-term morbidity and possible chronic … or recurrent … symptoms in pericarditis and myocarditis.”
The U.S. Department of Defense, of which the DHA is part, declined to comment. The DHA didn’t respond by press time to a request by The Epoch Times for comment. Its website doesn’t include the newly reported information.
Most Recovered
Researchers combed through health care records and other documents from cases reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System. The cases, which were verified or designated as suspected after the research was conducted, were among members who received the Dryvax or ACAM2000 smallpox vaccine between Dec. 1, 2002, and Dec. 31, 2016.
While more than 5,000 adverse events following smallpox vaccination were reported, researchers narrowed down the list by applying the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention case definitions for myocarditis and pericarditis from 2003. They identified 352 cases, including the four deaths. For each case, they reviewed documents such as health care records and confirmed that some of the patients suffered from myocarditis or pericarditis. They indicated that others were suspected of suffering from one of the conditions.
Researchers then looked at additional records to see whether each member had recovered and, if they had, how long the recovery took.
Out of 306 cases with follow-up data, just 16 recovered in six weeks or less. An additional 194 recovered by one year. But 67 didn’t recover until one year or later, and 39 never fully recovered, according to the most recent data available.
Researchers noted that most members recovered, even if it took a long time.
“Myocarditis/pericarditis following the smallpox vaccine is associated with full clinical and functional ventricular recovery in over 87 percent of cases,” they wrote.
Some of the members, however, “experienced prolonged or incomplete recovery beyond 1 year,” the researchers acknowledged.
Heart inflammation usually triggers a hospital visit, and patients are usually told to stop exercising for a period of time, among other restrictions. Symptoms can include fatigue, irregular heartbeat, and disease of the heart muscle. Several experts said it was good news that most patients recovered, but the lengthy recovery time, the fact that the condition was chronic for dozens of members, and the deaths sparked concerns.
Dr. Andrew Bostom, a heart expert in Rhode Island who wasn’t involved in the research, told The Epoch Times that it’s “concerning” that the 39 members hadn’t recovered, particularly given that those affected are “healthy young people that easily could have gotten away without getting the vaccine.”
Deaths
The number of deaths was small, but those deaths are further proof that vaccine-induced myocarditis can kill even previously healthy people.
Researchers said that for the two sudden deaths, there was very strong evidence that myocarditis was the cause. Autopsies and other information uncovered “no other causes,” they wrote.
One of the service members, a 26-year-old white male, had zero cardiac risk factors. He began showing symptoms such as fever and chills 10 days after receiving a smallpox vaccine. He suddenly died six days later.
The other member was a 24-year-old white male with one cardiac risk factor and a higher body mass index. He suddenly died 12 days after vaccination, the same day he was hospitalized.
The third death was an 18-year-old black male with no cardiac risk factors. The member experienced fatigue and other symptoms during a five-mile run eight days after vaccination. He was resuscitated and rushed to a hospital but died five days later.
The other death was a 23-year-old black female with no cardiac risk factors who reported symptoms such as shortness of breath 10 days after vaccination and was hospitalized. She died 22 days later. There were signs that myocarditis contributed to the third and fourth deaths, according to researchers.
All four members who died were, according to medical records, in good health, “meeting military physical fitness standards, and without diagnoses impacting the ability to deploy or receive the SPV,” or smallpox vaccine.
Although some smallpox vaccines were administered earlier, the military started a larger program in 2002 through which members deemed potentially at risk of a bioterrorism attack receive a smallpox vaccination. That led to millions of members receiving a vaccine.
In 2018, the military suspended mandatory administration of the anthrax and smallpox vaccines, with limited exceptions, but some members are still being vaccinated.
Heart issues are a known side effect of the smallpox vaccines. Myocarditis and pericarditis occur in approximately 1 in 175 first-time recipients of ACAM2000, which has been available since 2008, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Prospective military recipients of the vaccines are asked whether they have a history of heart conditions, and administrators are warned to keep an eye out for vaccine-associated heart problems within 30 days of vaccination.
Insight Into Myocarditis After COVID-19 Vaccination?
COVID-19 vaccines also cause myocarditis, particularly in young males. Some of those myocarditis patients have died. Long-term data for vaccinated people who suffered myocarditis is scarce, but available data have shown that not all sufferers recover quickly.
About half of the cardiac MRIs conducted on 151 patients after at least 90 days showed abnormalities, such as scarring, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention researchers reported in 2022.
In an update shared this year, the researchers revealed that 23 percent of 60 patients who responded to surveys said they were experiencing chest pain for one year or more after vaccination.
In the new paper, the military researchers said their findings, including the lack of recovery in some people and the lengthy recovery in others, “appear similar to cases” after COVID-19 vaccination.
“However, long-term outcomes remain to be defined and may need to include prolonged stress reactions associated with an acute case of [myocarditis/pericarditis] in a previously healthy and fit [vaccine recipient],” they said.
If the study’s data end up being similar to the cases among COVID-19 vaccine recipients, “that’s not very reassuring,” Bostom said.
