This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

    During a 5-minute exchange, the video of which went viral across social media, Kennedy repeatedly asks Mr. Turk a pair of key questions, the first of which had to do with the Department of Energy’s estimate of the total price tag to the American taxpayers needed to achieve the Biden goal of U.S. carbon neutrality by 2050. It was a question that Kennedy posed multiple times, and which Turk steadfastly refused to answer.

      An investigation will look at patient deaths between March 2020 and May 2022

      A nurse in the Netherlands admitted to colleagues that he had killed at least 20 coronavirus patients, the public prosecution department said Thursday.

      Theodoor V, 30, was said to have been concerned about the suffering of his victims while working as a pulmonary nurse at the Wilhelmina Hospital in Assen.

      V was arrested three weeks ago at his home in Veenhuizen after confessing to staff while being treated at a mental health clinic in nearby Drenthe.

      The suspect has now been ordered by an Assen court to remain in jail for at least another 30 days of pretrial detention.

      Authorities will continue to investigate patient deaths between March 2020 and May 2022, with the criminal investigation expected to conclude by June.

      A spokesperson said: ‘Experts are currently looking to see if discrepancies can be found in medical records which could match the suspect’s statements.’

      Until today, V had only been able to keep in contact with his lawyers.

      Victim families had been informed about the investigation two weeks ago, lawyer Sébas Diekstra told newswire ANP.

      Diekstra said: ‘They have so many questions at the moment and the uncertainty about how their loved one died torments them enormously.

      ‘Of course, the relatives also want proper research to be done, but at the same time they hope that the desired clarity will come very soon.’

      A relative of one of the victims said to Dutch media that V was connected to 24 patient deaths.

      The Wilhelmina Hospital has issued a statement online, dated 20 April.

      It said that the arrest of an employee on 17 April had ‘shocked us’.

      ‘The nurse was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the death of patients at the WZA [hospital] during the coronavirus pandemic.’

      Hans Mulder, a board member of the WZA, confirmed the employee no longer worked for the hospital.

      Mulder added: ‘We immediately took the report seriously and took the necessary steps.

      ‘A first important step was to deactivate the employee who is the subject of the report. In this way, the behavior from the report could not be continued.’

      After an internal investigation, the hospital took the case to the authorities, who were able to launch a criminal investigation.

      WZA said it would not share much information at this stage as to avoid interfering with the investigation.

      Mulder said: ‘We do have an eye for the well-being of our employees and any patients or surviving relatives involved.

      ‘In the coming period, we will mainly focus, together with the police, on collecting facts.’

      Speaking to local newspaper Leeuwarder Courant, a spokesperson on behalf of the hospital’s employees said the initial reaction shocked colleagues.

      Sylvia Sanders said: ‘The news has hit like a bomb. You still see a lot of emotions among employees.

      ‘At the same time, you also feel the drive to go further and to steer the care, which must always continue.’

  9. The Department of Health and Human Services has rescinded its effective demand that a Catholic hospital snuff out a candle it keeps burning in the chapel, a candle that HHS called a threat to hospital safety.

    “The game was simply not worth the candle for HHS,” Lori Windham, vice president and senior counsel at Becket, the religious freedom law firm representing the hospital, told The Daily Signal in a written statement Friday. “It realized it would be playing with fire in court if it stood by its absurd demand, so it chose wisely. We are glad Saint Francis’s can continue to serve those most in need while keeping the faith.”

    Last month, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services sent a letter to the Saint Francis Health System in Tulsa, Oklahoma, recommending that the hospital snuff out the candle to comply with “life safety from fire requirements,” or lose its accreditation.

    According to the hospital, the candle is encased in glass and covered on top, and the local government and fire marshal repeatedly have approved the display for fire safety. CMS threatened to revoke Saint Francis’ ability to see patients under Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program if it did not snuff out the candle. The Catholic hospital system asked the federal government for a waiver four times.

We aimed to investigate the risk of retinal vascular occlusion after COVID-19 vaccination. This retrospective cohort study used the TriNetX global network and included individuals vaccinated with COVID-19 vaccines between January 2020 and December 2022.

    Federal law makes it illegal to picket or parade near a justices’ home “with the intent of influencing any judge.” Training materials given to U.S. Marshals, which were obtained by Republican Alabama Sen. Katie Britt, revealed in late March that Marshals had been told last summer that they were not to bring criminal enforcement against protestors “unless absolutely necessary” and noted that making arrests is “not the goal.”

    Windmills interfere with this cycle by blowing the cool air high up with their turbine movements, instead of permitting it to flow along the ground as the natural process was.

      Untangling Disinformation

      As the pandemic winds down, anti-vaccine activists are building a legal network

      Steve Kirsch is a tech entrepreneur who made hundreds of millions of dollars after founding an early search engine and helping invent the optical computer mouse.

      Recently, he stood before a gathering of more than 250 lawyers in Atlanta while wearing a custom black T-shirt designed like a dictionary entry for the phrase “misinformation superspreader.”

      “Our definition is it’s someone who’s basically pointing out the truth and it just happens to disagree with the mainstream narrative we’re known as misinformation spreaders, because what they’re trying to do is they’re trying to control the narrative,” Kirsch told NPR.

      By “they,” Kirsch means a network of pharmaceutical companies, governments, doctors and journalists that he argues are covering up a pandemic-driven plot to poison the world for profit.

      The scientific consensus shows COVID vaccines are safe and significantly reduce the chances of death or serious illness. While many Americans may share a distrust of pharmaceutical companies and healthcare systems, there is no evidence of the kind of conspiracy alleged in these circles.

      In recent years, Kirsch has become an increasingly vocal and generous funder of the anti-vaccine movement. He helped organize and fund the conference to map out strategies for anti-vaccine and COVID-19-focused litigation as the pandemic winds down.

      Their proposed targets include hospitals, school systems, medical licensing boards and, the holy grail, pharmaceutical companies that make vaccines.

      “My goal is to expose every single one of these a**holes,” Kirsch told the audience, to uproarious applause.

      The lawyers met as the anti-vaccine movement is at a crossroads. The COVID-19 pandemic brought in new energy and supporters but is fading from public life. On May 11, the federal government’s public health emergency will expire. To keep the cause alive, some in the movement are trying to build up a legal arm.

      The legal conference drew a mix of people who’ve advocated against vaccines for years before the pandemic, and those, like Kirsch, who are more recent converts. He said he actually got two Moderna shots when COVID vaccines became available.

      Kirsch’s path to the conference started with an effort to find treatments for COVID.

      From funding research to organizing lawyers
      “When the pandemic hit, I put in a million dollars of my own money and raised another $5 million dollars. We started the COVID 19 Early Treatment Fund and we started funding early treatments,” said Kirsch.

      The goal was to run trials on existing treatments that might help combat the virus. Reporting by MIT’s Technology Review found the project had brought together highly respected biologists and drug researchers who believed in the work. But when some of the research seemed to run into dead ends, Kirsch reportedly began to clash with the scientists he was funding.

      “If the data is is is bad and doesn’t make sense and the study was badly done, then I have a right to reject it,” said Kirsch. “And so the point is that if a study is well done, you’ll see that I will like the study.”

      Kirsch has a tendency to offer large sums of money to anyone willing to debate his assertions.

      “But they won’t do that. They won’t get into any discussion with me because they don’t want to answer a single question,” Kirsch said.

      Jeffrey Morris has tried to engage with Kirsch for years. In his spare time, the professor of biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania has gone line by line through some of Kirsch’s claims, providing answers, context and explanations. They once had a long conversation over Zoom.

      “And it was an interesting discussion, you know, because he admitted that he was not a scientist and didn’t think like one. And so I was trying to connect with him and help him understand the leaps he was making in his arguments to get him to think more carefully. Because I could tell he was someone with a lot of energy and passion on the issue,” said Morris, who has watched Kirsch pull millions of views on some of his COVID vaccine content.

      When someone makes a dramatic claim that vaccines are killing millions, it’s their burden to show the evidence, said Morris, not the other way around.

      “They’re presuming that they have the entitlement that what they’re saying can be presumed to be true without them demonstrating rigorously that it’s true, and that it is the responsibility of society and the scientific community to prove them wrong. And if they fail to prove them wrong, or if they don’t show up, then they’re really offended. And then to them, that just proves their guilt. It proves the cover up,” he said.

      As government cover ups became a regular talking point for Kirsch, the researchers abandoned his early treatment project. Two years and $2 million later, he’s hoping to organize a sustained legal insurgency against public health agencies, drug manufacturers, hospitals and schools.

      Attorney Pete Serano traveled from Washington State, where he represents three doctors accused of spreading false statements about COVID-19 and said finding a supportive community of lawyers and experts he can call for help is “monumental.”

      “You know, it really felt like it was me against the world, even though there were probably maybe half a dozen to a dozen lawyers in Washington fighting. It still feels – it’s extremely lonely. It’s extremely difficult,” said Serano.

      Conference organizers asked reporters not to record entire presentations. But one thing Serano and other attendees heard again and again from speakers: In this room, you’re among heroes.

      “There are people who are tremendously intellectually talented and gifted in so many ways who are using those talents to fight for your rights, to fight for my rights,” said Serano.

      Creating a new body of law
      The fights include everything from suing educators who enforced mask mandates, to demanding vaccination status be made a protected class, like race or sexual orientation. Thousands of lawsuits pushing back against public health measures have been filed since the pandemic.

      The goal of this conference is to bring lawyers behind these suits together, study all that legal spaghetti on the wall and analyze what has and hasn’t worked. They mean to probe for weak points in the law, build a network of experts and plaintiffs, and, they hope, inspire new laws.

      Conference organizers like attorney Warner Mendenhall want to ensure a steady supply of lawyers who see opportunity, whether ideologically aligned with the anti-vaccine movement or not.

      “I hate to say this but greed is good in this instance,” said Mendenhall on a webinar promoting the event. “So if lawyers can see that they can get rich, and we’re trying to prove that you can – we haven’t yet, but we will – it’ll bring lawyers in simply for the money.”

      Fears about vaccines are not new. The current legal structure around vaccines is the result of a wave of lawsuits in the 1970s and 80s. It tries to balance individual freedom with public health needs, according to Anjali Deshmukh, a pediatrician and professor of administrative law at Georgia State University.

      “It’s not only about protecting us, but it’s about protecting our community. And that’s a different calculus, where it’s now within the government’s interests to make sure that these diseases are not spreading,” Deshmukh said.

      But the law is not fixed, she added, and well-funded, well-organized groups can be a powerful force.

      “And I think like we saw with Roe v Wade, you had a case that was passed 50 years ago and then had various chips away at it until the ground crumbled,” said Deshmukh.

      The civil rights movement, organized labor and women’s rights advocates have also relied on a potent mix of court battles and ground campaigns to sway public sentiment.

      “The court of public opinion is more important than I think we give credit to in both law and medicine. We can have all the science in the world, we can have laws that make sense, but laws change. Science is not always convincing when you’re coming from a place of fear,” said Deshmukh.

      Cases don’t even have to succeed in court to have an impact, Deshmukh said. Influencers and headlines can frame settlements, technical legal outcomes or compelling, emotional testimony as victories for one side or another. She said these lawsuits also come at a time when the Supreme Court is weakening the powers of many regulators.

      With the COVID national emergency order set to end, keeping COVID-related grievances alive in the courts may also help sustain the larger movement against vaccines.

      Serano, the lawyer from Washington State, says the kinds of cases that brought him here may become the bulk of his work for years.

      “I plan on being that 80 year old guy talking about what it was like in the 2020s and COVID 19 and telling some young whippersnapper lawyer about how we did it back when,” he said.

    What has not been said is that municipal (etc.) water treatment plans may purify water of germs and so on, there is absolutely no system in place to purify the water of the contamination of pharmaceuticals of EVERY stripe expressed in urine upstream.

    Estrogens may affect young males and will act as natural depressants and feminizing agents, reducing male fertility and, well, male expression.

    Antidepressants also enter the water system, but are not filtered out as there are no mechanisms in place to do so. With the prevalence of antidepressants entering the watershed through urine, we are all being dosed, whether we know it or not.

    Epic Cleantec’s beverage highlights one way to tackle extreme drought: by turning recycled waste into potable products

    After years of historic drought in California, water recycling has become a pressing issue – but just how much can be done with what we’ve got?

    A water-recycling company is seeking to answer that question, with help from a local brewery. The result is a beer made from wastewater, and I can tell you from personal experience that it’s pretty good.

    Epic OneWater Brew, from Epic Cleantec and Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company, is made from greywater recycled from showers, laundry and bathroom sinks in a 40-story San Francisco apartment building, where Epic has onsite equipment to capture, treat and reuse water for non-drinking purposes.

    You won’t find the beer for sale anytime soon. Epic has been open about the fact that it’s a “demonstration product”: the company’s goal is to get people talking about the possibilities of water recycling, and current commercial regulations on recycled drinking water are strict.

    “We wanted to do something fun that was going to be an engaging tool to talk to people, to get them excited, but also that showcased the untapped potential of water reuse,” said Aaron Tartakovsky, Epic Cleantec’s co-founder and CEO. They opted for a kölsch: “We wanted to choose a beer that was going to be sort of more universally liked versus some of the more craft beers, like an IPA, that some people like, some people don’t.”

    But how would beer from a giant apartment building’s wastewater actually taste? To find out, I sampled a four-pack of OneWater Brew. It was pleasant and, to recycle some terms I’ve heard beer people use, crisp and drinkable. There were no notes of shower or laundry. If this were served at a bar, I’d never guess where it came from.

    Did other drinkers approve? “I think a lot of people, initially and understandably, were skeptical about the project or were hesitant to try it, but I would say 99% who came in feeling a little bit apprehensive, once they tried it, got really excited,” Tartakovsky said. In fact, making beer with Epic’s water – whose safety is tested in an outside lab as well as onsite – comes with a perk. “A lot of times at a brewery, you turn on the tap and whatever water you get, that’s what you brew with. In our case, we have so much control over the treatment process that we were actually able to treat to tweak some of the steps to give the brewers a blank canvas.”

    In the future, he expects plenty of companies to make similar potable products and sell them – but not quite yet. In terms of turning greywater into drinking water, “that’s not a problem at all, technologically speaking. We could do that next week,” he said. “The real challenge is just making sure that we are on the same page with the regulators. We want to make sure we’re always on the same page, because at the end of the day, their job is to protect public health.”

    In the meantime, companies like Epic are tackling the issue in other ways. The company is running the first approved greywater recycling system in San Francisco, where buildings erected after 1 January 2022 are required to install onsite water reuse systems. Epic’s system at Fifteen Fifty, the 40-story apartment building in the city’s SoMa neighborhood, is built to recycle 7,500 gallons a day, or 2.5m gallons a year, according to the CEO.

    “We’re going into these buildings, which globally use 14% of all water, and almost none of them reuse that water. And we are helping these recycling projects reuse up to 95% of their water,” Tartakovsky said.

    And recent downpours across California haven’t eliminated the need for such projects, Tartakovsky said. “There’s a perception that because of all the rain, we’re out of the woods when it comes to water, but I think the reality is we were given a bit of a lifeline – by no means is this a permanent fix,” he said.

    “We’re in the 21st century, with all the technological capabilities that we have at our disposal. The fact that we are still reliant on whether or not it rains to know if we’ll have enough water for our communities is a problem.”

    According to The New York Post, “The move is widely believed to be spurred by interest in stripping African journalist Simon Ateba of his access to the briefing room after a series of disruptions, though people involved in discussions said that White House staff had talked about making changes even before Ateba became a minor celebrity.”

    Chicago is a difficult place to own a business. Riots, looting and burglaries make it almost impossible for retailers to survive.

    Smash-and-grab thieves robbed a Rolls Royce dealership in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood in December and made off with millions in luxury watches.

    Thieves attacked and pepper-sprayed a security guard while robbing two luxury retail stores in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood.

    Retails, like Walmart, say they are losing tens of millions of dollars a year operating in Chicago and have announced the closure of four stores.

    In recent months, business in Chicago’s Wicker Park and Humboldt park have been hit hard. A community alert sent out by police to area businesses suggests they beef up their security and install ArmorPlast, a type of invisible shatterproof shield produced by a company called Riot Glass that is installed over existing glass, to protect themselves, according to a CBS News report Monday.

    Fox Business reports:

    The advice came after a string of burglaries in the area, with Chicago Police noting that most of the burglaries showed similar characteristics. According to the alert, thieves typically break in from side or front glass windows using rocks, bricks or a crowbar, then enter the business to steal money and other items such as liquor.

    Chicago Police specifically pointed to ArmorPlast in the alert, which founder Brad Campbell says can help keep thieves out of businesses.

    “We want to keep the bad guys outside the building – and that’s what the product does,” he told CBS News.

    According to Chicago Police Department data, burglaries in the city are on pace to reach 2,253 this year, which would represent a 6% increase over 2022 numbers.

    The rise in what some have called “smash and grabs” have employees in businesses throughout the city on edge, with some reporting being the target of multiple burglaries in recent months.

    Usually, people fear their lives too. Like, I have seven kids,” Tamer Jaradat, and employee at Western Food & Grocery, told CBS News. “If it takes me having to protect my life or my business, I’m going to do it.”

    Jaradat said the business has been hit multiple times in recent memory, including one instance where thieves stole an entire ATM from the building.

    Far-left Democratic Rep. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts was fact-checked by Twitter users after she claimed a homeless fugitive was “lynched” by a Marine veteran this week.

    On Monday, 30-year-old Jordan Neely got on a New York City subway and began to threaten passengers.

    According to WNBC-TV, “witnesses and law enforcement sources said Neely got on the train and started acting very aggressively toward other riders, threatening to harm them. … Neely told riders on the train that he wanted food, that he wasn’t taking no for an answer, and that he would hurt anyone on the train.”

    Given the stunning instances of violence on New York City subways in recent years, 24-year-old Daniel Penny did not take that threat lightly.

    The veteran restrained Neely in a chokehold. Video of the incident shows two other men helping him.

    Neely later died and his death was ruled a homicide, but that does not classify it as murder. A homicide simply occurs when someone dies at the hands of another person; the determination does not take context into account.

    Neely was reportedly homeless and mentally ill. He was also black while Penny is white, so a predictable narrative was set: A white man “murdered” a black man on a New York subway. The Marine vet is being portrayed as a calculated killer who was motivated by racism.

    Pressley, a member of the so-called “squad” of far-left female House Democrats, joined in the outrage.

    She shared a video of Neely’s time as a bright-faced Michael Jackson impersonator and said he was “lynched.”

    “He was 30 years old. Black men deserve to grow old — not be lynched on a Subway because they were having a mental health crisis,” Pressley wrote. “Jordan deserved better. Accountability now.”

    Her tweet made it appear as though a fresh-faced kid doing the moonwalk was murdered in cold blood. On old Twitter, she might have gotten away with it.

    But under the ownership of Elon Musk, Twitter now allows ordinary users to fact-check bogus posts such as Pressley’s.

    People added the proper context to the video and pointed out in a since-removed community note that it was more than a decade old.

    “This is a 2012 video of Jordan Neely, not conduct that led to his death. When he was restrained by 3 individuals in 2023, it was in response to aggressive, threatening behavior. He also had an active felony assault warrant out, in addition to 44 prior arrests,” the community note said.

    The days when a handful of politically motivated hacks control the narrative through disinformation are over.

    Tragic as Neely’s death may be, he was not an innocent Michael Jackson impersonator who was killed while doing his best “Billie Jean.” He threatened people who have been terrorized by crime in a city that won’t do anything about it.

    A veteran intervened, and Pressley’s attempt to incite a mob against him by twisting the facts was promptly exposed for what it was.

    A former Niagara-area town councillor is facing multiple criminal charges in connection with his alleged involvement with the convoy protests in Ottawa last year, police say.

    Harold Jonker turned himself in at a police station in Grimsby on April 29 and was charged with two counts of counselling an uncommitted indictable offence and one count each of mischief/obstruct property and intimidation by blocking or obstructing a highway, a spokesperson for Niagara Regional Police says.

    He was subsequently released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court in Ottawa on May 10.

    Niagara Regional Police say that the Ottawa Police Service requested their assistance with the matter.

    “All charges stem from an incident that occurred in the jurisdictional boundaries of the Ottawa Police Service,” Const. Philip Gavin told CP24.

    Jonker had served as a town councillor in West Lincoln prior to his defeat in October’s municipal election.

    Last summer, the integrity commissioner for West Lincoln found that Jonker violated the town’s code of conduct by allegedly continuing to participate in the protest after it was declared “unlawful” and docked him 30 days pay as a result.

The Texas governor said it is his understanding that the Biden administration said it is possible that up to 13,000 migrants could be expected to cross the U.S. border each day after Title 42 ends.     The CEO of a biopharmaceutical company was killed in a fiery car crash on Tuesday in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

    The Town of Chapel Hill has identified the driver as 50-year-old Carrboro resident Lisa Marie Yanez, and the passenger as 40-year-old Durham resident Vaughn Avery Booker.

    Both the driver and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene after the driver collided with a tree, according to the Chapel Hill Police Department (CHPD) investigation per Daily Tar Heel.

    According to the Town of Chapel Hill, the investigation into the crash’s cause is ongoing and no new information is available at this time.

    Yanez was the CEO of Aerami Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to breathing life into the treatment of serious cardiopulmonary and cardiometabolic conditions.

    “It is with deep sadness that Aerami Therapeutics (“Aerami”) today announces that our dear friend, fierce patient advocate, dedicated mentor, and CEO, Lisa Yañez suddenly passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2023,” the company said in a news release.

    Multiple people were stabbed early Saturday morning near the University of Iowa campus, and police are currently looking for the prime suspect.

    According to reports, police were called to the 300 block of S. Gilbert Street early Saturday morning to break up a fight. Approximately two hours after the initial notice, at 2 a.m., campus police informed students that numerous people had been attacked at a neighboring gas station.

    “Multiple victims confirmed. Police are searching for a suspect. Continue to be aware of your surroundings and avoid the area,” the University of Iowa Police Department wrote on Twitter.

    The police found three adult male victims with stab wounds and were taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment of their injuries. All three are expected to recover, police said.

    Denver Councilwoman CdeBaca suggests tax on white-owned businesses

    Denver City Councilwoman Candi CdeBaca is suggesting a new tax on white-owned businesses to fund racial reparations to minority-owned businesses.

    CdeBaca advocated for race-based taxation, which would almost certainly prompt constitutional challenges, at a Thursday forum before the Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance.

    CdeBaca faces a June 6 runoff to represent District 9. Her challenger, Darrel Watson, said he also supports racial reparations in the form of private business investment in underserved communities.

    “Capitalism was built on stolen land, stolen labors, and stolen resources,” said CdeBaca, who identifies as a Democratic Socialist.

    CdeBaca said a business improvement districts, or BID, could be used to enact a race-based tax on white-owned businesses.

    “You could be collecting those extra taxes from white-led business all over the city and redistributing them to Black and Brown-owned businesses,” CdeBaca said.

    On Friday, the President of Mexico stated that his country would send China with evidence of illegal fentanyl shipments from China to Mexican drug cartels. This statement came after China denied that any such smuggling was taking place.

    It was recently discovered that the synthetic opioid responsible for hundreds of daily overdose deaths in the United States was shipped to Mexico from China in a container that was intercepted in the Pacific port of Lázaro Cárdenas, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador stated.

    “We already have the evidence,” said Lopez Obrador.

    Obrador wrote to Xi Jinping back in March, requesting assistance in reducing the influx of fentanyl.
