[…]She called for electricity consumption to be cut at peak hours by at least 5%.

But plans for a cap on the price of natural gas, a key Russian export to the EU, were put on hold.

The plan outlined in Strasbourg targets “excess revenues” with proposals to skim the profits of low-carbon electricity producers and implement a de facto windfall tax on the oil, gas and coal sectors.

Ms von der Leyen said that “making ends meet” was “becoming a source of anxiety for millions of businesses and households”.

ctv-Energy crisis: EU chief wants to tap excess producer profits

A top European Union official unveiled a plan Wednesday to cap the revenue of electricity producers that are making extraordinary profits because of the effects of Russia’s war in Ukraine and climate change, saying the proposal could raise US$140 billion to help people hit by spiraling energy prices.

[…]”Russia keeps actively manipulating our energy market,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told EU lawmakers in Strasbourg, France. “So, this market is not functioning anymore.”

[…]. But with economies still recovering from the pandemic, money must be found outside of national budgets to provide more help to millions struggling to pay their electricity bills. That’s why the commission wants to tap the profits of power producers using oil, gas and coal as well as renewables and nuclear power. It estimates that some companies are making five times their usual profits.

“These companies are making revenues they never accounted for, they never even dreamt of,” von der Leyen said. “In these times, it is wrong to receive extraordinary record revenues and profits benefiting from war and on the back of consumers.”

[…]“The next winters — not just this one — the next winters will be difficult, make no mistake about that,” commission Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans told reporters after the plan was unveiled. “But I am confident that these measures will bring progress.”

europravda – State of the Union: Six takeaways from Ursula von der Leyen’s keynote speech

      1. ‘Sanctions are here to stay’
Von der Leyen began her speech by praising Ukraine’s resistance against Russia’s invasion, describing the country as a “nation of heroes” and vowing the EU’s solidarity will “remain unshakable.”

[…]”Today, courage has a name, and that name is Ukraine,” von der Leyen said, adding she will travel to Kyiv later in the day. “Putin will fail and Europe will prevail.”

      […]

      2. ‘We have to decouple’

As expected, the energy crisis featured high on von der Leyen’s to-do list.

“Russia keeps actively manipulating our energy market. I mean, they prefer to flare the gas instead of sending it to Europe according to the contracts,” she said.

The Commission chief officially presented three key proposals to curb electricity bills: an EU-wide plan to introduce mandatory electricity savings, a uniform price cap on the excess revenues made by inframarginal power plants (that is, those who don’t use gas, such as renewables, nuclear, hydropower and lignite), and a windfall tax to partially capture the huge profits reaped by fossil fuel companies.

      […]

      3. ‘We must make nature our first ally’

Von der Leyen’s diagnosis of the energy crisis has one root cause: the EU’s heavy dependency on fossil fuels.

The bloc, she said, should now strive to speed up the transition away from all imported fuels and develop homegrown and self-reliant systems of green technology,

[…]The president talked of hydrogen as a “game changer” for the continent

[…]”We’ve all seen to what extent the Green Deal is important. Summer 2022 will remain in people’s memoires,”

[…]At international level, the president said she will push for a stronger defence of biodiversity at the upcoming UN conference in Montreal, as well as in the COP27 in Egypt.

      4. ‘A new reality of higher public debt’

      […]

      5. ‘We must also eradicate corruption at home’

One of the most compelling segments of von der Leyen’s speech came in its second half, when the president spoke about the threats faced by democracies in the 21st century.

First, she warned about the “foreign autocrats” funding entities inside the EU to spread “disinformation” and “toxic lies,” such as a Chinese centre in Amsterdam that dismissed the mass internment of Uyghurs as “rumours.”

[…]“We will not allow any autocracy’s Trojan horses to attack our democracies from within,” she told MEPs.

[…]Von der Leyen then looked inwards and reflected on the “vices that corrode” the EU from within. The bloc has struggled to address democratic backsliding in several member states, most notably Poland and Hungary.

      […]

      6. ‘A rethink of our foreign policy agenda’

Mentally ill criminals are wreaking havoc across the streets of progressive cities as policies instituted by Democrat lawmakers, designed to end the rule of law, take effect.

The majority of homeless drug dealers and drug addicts are moving to the Democrat-run city to receive welfare, sell drugs, and get away with violent crimes while surrounded by police. Defund the police measures and bail reform have crippled law enforcement officials’ ability to fight crime while policies enacted during the covid pandemic allow criminals a get-out-of-jail pass.

Two pings on the new, “speaking” Durham filing in the Danchenko case
    Ears to hear.

On 2 September 2022, Special Counsel John Durham entered a motion under seal in the federal case against Igor Danchenko – source for the Steele dossier – for making false statements to the FBI.

The motion, regarding admissibility of evidence, was filed under seal because it contained classified information. The motion was unsealed 13 September with redactions in the Exhibits. Margot Cleveland previewed earlier at The Federalist the presumption that if the motion were unsealed, we’d be able to

  15. Note: this article is not the newest, but, in light of the recent weaponization of government institutions, it takes on renewed relevance:

Buried deep within the massive infrastructure legislation recently signed by President Joe Biden is a little-noticed “safety” measure that will take effect in five years. Marketed to Congress as a benign tool to help prevent drunk driving, the measure will mandate that automobile manufacturers build into every car what amounts to a “vehicle kill switch.”

As has become standard for legislative mandates passed by Congress, this measure is disturbingly short on details. What we do know is that the “safety” device must “passively monitor the performance of a driver of a motor vehicle to accurately identify whether that driver may be impaired.”

Everything about this mandatory measure should set off red flares.

First, use of the word “passively” suggests the system will always be on and constantly monitoring the vehicle. Secondly, the system must connect to the vehicle’s operational controls, so as to disable the vehicle either before driving or during, when impairment is detected. Thirdly, it will be an “open” system, or at least one with a backdoor, meaning authorized (or unauthorized) third-parties can remotely access the system’s data at any time.

  16. Note: the upshot of this article is that among other things, Trump’s lawyer’s communications have been siezed by the DOJ:

News of dozens of subpoenas being sent by the DOJ to Trump supporters broke on Friday and was finally confirmed on Monday. The subpoenas, which were ostensibly tied to investigations surrounding January 6th, targeted over 40 people. Two more phones were seized from Trump associates as well, including his in-house counsel.

It marked another move in what appears to be a highly politicized investigation targeting the political enemies of Joe Biden for nothing more than wrong-speak. Backing that assertion up was Tucker Carlson, who obtained some of the subpoenas and provided some of the disturbing demands within them.

A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) shows not only that the effectiveness of the Pfizer Covid vaccine becomes negative (meaning the vaccinated are more likely to be infected than the unvaccinated) within five months but that the vaccine destroys any protection a person has from natural immunity.

The study includes 193,346 SARS-CoV-2 infections reported between March 11th 2020 and June 3rd 2022.

  20. NYT – Durham Inquiry Appears to Wind Down as Grand Jury Expires

When John Durham was assigned by the Justice Department in 2019 to examine the origins of the investigation into the 2016 Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, President Donald Trump and his supporters expressed a belief that the inquiry would prove that a “deep state” conspiracy including top Obama-era officials had worked to sabotage him.

Now Durham appears to be winding down his three-year inquiry without anything close to the results Trump was seeking. The grand jury that Durham has recently used to hear evidence has expired, and while he could convene another, there are currently no plans to do so, three people familiar with the matter said.

Durham and his team are working to complete a final report by the end of the year, they said, and one of the lead prosecutors on his team is leaving for a job with a prominent law firm.

Over the course of his inquiry, Durham has developed cases against two people accused of lying to the FBI in relation to outside efforts to investigate purported Trump-Russia ties, but he has not charged any conspiracy or put any high-level officials on trial. The recent developments suggest that the chances of any more indictments are remote.

After Durham’s team completes its report, it will be up to Attorney General Merrick Garland to decide whether to make its findings public. The report will be Durham’s opportunity to present any evidence or conclusions that challenge the Justice Department’s basis for opening the investigation in 2016 into the links between Trump and Russia.

The Justice Department declined to comment.

Durham and his team used a grand jury in Washington to indict Michael Sussmann, a prominent cybersecurity lawyer with ties to Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign. Sussman was indicted last year on a charge of making a false statement to the FBI at a meeting in which he shared a tip about potential connections between computers associated with Trump and a Kremlin-linked Russian bank.

Sussmann was acquitted of that charge at trial in May.

A grand jury based in the Eastern District of Virginia last year indicted a Russia analyst who had worked with Christopher Steele, a former British spy who was the author of a dossier of rumors and unproven assertions about Trump. The dossier played no role in the FBI’s decision to begin examining the ties between Russia and the Trump campaign. It was used in an application to obtain a warrant to surveil a Trump campaign associate.

The analyst, Igor Danchenko, who is accused of lying to federal investigators, goes on trial next month in Alexandria, Virginia.

In the third case, Durham’s team negotiated a plea deal with an FBI lawyer whom an inspector general had accused of doctoring an email used in preparation for a wiretap renewal application. The plea deal resulted in no prison time.

Trump and his allies have long hoped that Durham would prosecute former FBI and intelligence officials responsible for the Russia investigation, known as Crossfire Hurricane. Trump has described the investigation as a witch hunt and accused the FBI of spying on his presidential campaign.

Last month, in the days after the FBI obtained a search warrant to seize boxes of classified and other government documents he was keeping at his resort in Florida, Trump used social media to amplify the unsubstantiated idea that Durham had uncovered a vast political conspiracy by the Obama administration and the intelligence community to damage him.

At the same time, the former president seemed to acknowledge a lowering of expectations, from indictments to a report.

“The public is waiting ‘with bated breath’ for the Durham Report, which should reveal corruption at a level never seen before in our country,” Trump wrote.

In May 2019, Durham was selected by the attorney general at the time, William Barr, to review the origins of Crossfire Hurricane, an investigation that was eventually completed by Robert Mueller, the special counsel appointed to oversee it. The Mueller report scrutinized numerous links between Trump campaign associates and Russia, but did not find a criminal conspiracy.

Durham’s review eventually evolved into a criminal investigation, allowing him to issue grand jury subpoenas to gather documents and interview witnesses. Shortly before the 2020 election, Barr made him a special counsel, permitting him to stay in place even after Trump left office.

Garland has met with the Durham team a handful of times, and a top official in the deputy attorney general’s office regularly checks in with Durham on the investigation’s progress.

Early this year, Justice Department leadership asked Durham to issue a report on his findings in May. That timing slipped, and now Durham is aiming to submit his report to Garland after the election, the people familiar with the matter said.

The assignment Barr gave to Durham faced difficulties from the beginning.

To begin with, the Justice Department’s independent inspector general, Michael Horowitz, was already conducting an exhaustive review of Crossfire Hurricane.

In late 2019, Horowitz delivered a report that uncovered significant problems with the FBI’s applications for wiretap orders targeting Carter Page, a former Trump campaign adviser with numerous ties to Russia. But it also concluded that the investigation as a whole had a proper legal basis, and that there was no evidence that “political bias or improper motivation” had led the FBI to open it.

Durham issued an unusual public statement saying without explanation that he disagreed with the inspector general report’s conclusion that Crossfire Hurricane had been properly opened. Horowitz later told Congress that Durham had told him he thought it should have been opened as a “preliminary” investigation rather than a “full” one.

Horowitz’s investigation also discovered an FBI lawyer’s doctoring of the email used in preparation for a wiretap renewal application. He referred the matter for prosecution, and Durham’s team negotiated the resulting plea deal.

In an initial period, Durham seemed to be searching for signs of political bias among the FBI officials Horowitz had already scrutinized and hunting for wrongdoing among intelligence agencies outside Horowitz’s jurisdiction. But those efforts did not result in charges.

In 2020, a top prosecutor and longtime confidant of Durham at the U.S. attorney’s office in Connecticut abruptly quit the team.

Although the charges Durham brought against both Sussmann and Danchenko last fall were narrow, Durham used the indictments to argue that the FBI was deliberately ignoring information that cut against the idea that Trump and his associates had improperly worked with Russia.

Durham’s team argued in court that Clinton campaign associates had misled people into thinking that Trump or his campaign associates had colluded with Russia, although it did not charge such a conspiracy. Durham accused Danchenko of lying to the FBI in ways that made the Steele dossier seem more credible than it was.

Horowitz’s report, however, showed that the FBI had not opened the Russia investigation on the basis of the Steele dossier — contrary to claims by Trump’s supporters.

The coming trial of Danchenko will give Durham another opportunity to scrutinize aspects of the FBI’s Russia investigation.

Andrew DeFilippis, a prosecutor who played a key role in the Sussmann case, has notified the court that he will not take part in the trial of Danchenko. DeFilippis has told colleagues that he is leaving for a job at the law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell.

Reached at his desk at the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan last week, DeFilippis declined to comment.

Joe Biden and the Democrats on Tuesday celebrated the $740 billion Green New Deal absurdly named the “Inflation Reduction Act” at the White House.

Biden celebrated his Inflation Reduction Act hours after a disappointing August inflation report.

Inflation rose by 0.1% in August to 8.3% despite the decrease in the record high gas prices.

    • Characteristics and Clinical Ocular Manifestations in Patients with Acute Corneal Graft Rejection after Receiving the COVID-19 Vaccine: A Systematic Review

      Abstract
This study aimed to determine the characteristics and clinical ocular manifestations of acute corneal graft rejection after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination.

We conducted an online search of the PubMed and EMBASE databases.

Data on recipients’ characteristics, corneal transplantation types, interval between vaccination and allograft rejection, clinical manifestations, and graft rejection medication were extracted.

Thirteen articles on 21 patients (23 eyes) with acute corneal graft rejection after COVID-19 vaccination, published between April and December 2021, were included.

The median (interquartile range) age at the onset of rejection was 68 (27–83) years. Types of transplantation included penetrating keratoplasty (12 eyes),

Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (six eyes), Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (four eyes), and living-related conjunctival-limbal allograft (one eye).

The interval between vaccination and rejection ranged from 1 day to 6 weeks.

Corneal edema was the leading clinical manifestation (20 eyes), followed by keratic precipitates (14 eyes) and conjunctival or ciliary injection (14 eyes).

Medications included frequently applied topical corticosteroids (12 eyes), followed by a combination of topical and oral corticosteroids (four eyes). In addition, the clinical characteristics of corneal allograft rejection after COVID-19 vaccination were identified.

Corneal transplant recipients may require further vaccination, necessitating appropriate management and treatment.

  23. Joe Biden and the Democrats destroy everything they touch.

The Biden Regime is looking to pay $80 per barrel to fill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

Biden waged a war on domestic oil production as soon as he was sworn into office.

On his first day in office, Joe Biden killed off 42,100 jobs by ending construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline and the end of construction of the Trump border wall.

The national average for a gallon of gas is $3.841 – nearly $2 a gallon increase since he took over.

The Biden regime also shut down more pipelines last winter as gas prices were surging.

After waging a war on domestic production, Joe Biden (possibly illegally) released millions of barrels of oil from US Strategic Oil Reserves.

Biden released millions of barrels in these reserves but the beneficiaries were Asian countries and Europe.

Now Joe Biden wants to fill the Strategic Reserves with $80 per barrel oil.

Just two years ago the Democrats blocked President Trump from filling the Strategic Oil Reserves at $24 per barrel.
