Syrian refugees in Turkey plan caravan to reach EU
A group of Syrian refugees in Turkey is planning to form a caravan to reach the European Union, organizers said Saturday.
Plans are being drawn up online via a Telegram channel, set up six days ago and followed by almost 70,000 people. organizers are calling on people to bring sleeping bags, tents, life jackets, water, canned food and first aid kits.
“We will announce it when it’s time to go,” one organizer, a 46-year-old refugee who wished to remain anonymous, told AFP.
Some of the organizers already lived in the EU, he added.
Organizers say the caravan will be split into groups of up to 50 people, each led by a supervisor.
“We have been in Turkey for 10 years,” read one message posted on the channel by an administrator. “We are protected… but Western countries must share the burden.”
There are 3.7 million Syrian refugees officially living in Turkey.
Syria’s civil war, which began with a brutal crackdown of anti-government protests in 2011, has killed nearly half a million people and forced around half of the country’s pre-war population from their homes.
Many Syrian refugees in Turkey fear being sent back, especially after a recent shift in Turkey’s stance towards Damascus.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he is preparing to send back one million Syrian refugees on a voluntary basis.
In February and March 2020, tens of thousands of migrants approached the land border between Turkey and Greece, after Erdogan threatened to keep the borders with Europe open.

A mere days ago on Wednesday, Greece issued formal letters to NATO HQ, the EU, and UN warning that a Ukraine-style war is looming with Turkey. The two have long been locked in disputes over maritime rights, the status of Greece’s Aegean islands, and repeat airspace violations.
On Saturday a dangerous live fire incident in the eastern Mediterranean has served to inflame tensions further, and displays how on the brink the two countries could be to entering an active conflict, which would be the second afflicting Europe. “Turkey said the Greek Coast Guard fired on a ship in international waters in the northern Aegean Sea, marking another potential escalation of tension between the NATO countries Saturday,” Bloomberg reports.

The vessel wasn’t emitting a signal, according to a Greek shipping ministry official, so the Greek Coast Guard requested it stop to be boarded. The captain refused the control and sped off, prompting the Coast Guard to fire warning shots in the air and not at the vessel, said the official, requesting anonymity as details have not yet been made public.
The incident serves as a reminder that tensions continue to percolate in the region. Ahead of next year’s elections, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stepped up criticism of what Turkey calls a growing Greek military buildup on islands close to its coastline as well as Western military support to Athens, with which Ankara has long-running territorial disputes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning pediatricians and parents about a rare and serious respiratory disease that is affecting children.
It is not Covid-19 or flu, it is called Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68).
Healthcare providers and hospitals in several regions of the United States notified the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) during August 2022 about increases in pediatric hospitalizations in patients with severe respiratory illness who also tested positive for rhinovirus (RV) and/or enterovirus (EV)… Upon further typing, some specimens have been positive for enterovirus D68 (EV-D68),” according to CDC’s website.
Diagnosing Enterovirus D68 can be difficult because its symptoms are similar to those of the common cold like runny nose, cough, and fever.

Reuters reported, “Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s team may not have returned all the classified records removed from the White House at the end of his presidency even after an FBI search of his home, U.S. prosecutors warned on Thursday, calling it a potential national security risk that needs investigation.
“That revelation came in a Justice Department court filing asking U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon to let it continue reviewing about 100 classified records seized by the FBI at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate while it investigates whether classified documents were illegally removed from the White House and improperly stored there.
“Trump is under investigation for retaining government records, some of which were marked as highly classified, at the resort in Palm Beach, Florida, his home after leaving office in January 2021.”

A supporter of Brazil’s far-right president Jair Bolsonaro has stabbed to death a backer of leftist former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in the latest instance of rising political tensions in the buildup to this year’s election.
The violence happened in the west-central state of Mato Grosso, after tempers frayed during an argument over support for the two candidates. Bolsonaro trails Lula in the polls in an election riven by intense polarisation.

As Switzerland takes drastic measures to reduce its gas use this winter – including fines and up to three years in prison for citizens who violate new regulations, a viral poster circulating on Swiss social media telling citizens to rat out neighbors heating their homes above 19C (66.2F) has raised eyebrows.
“Does the neighbor heat the apartment to over 19 degrees? Please inform us,” reads the poster currently circulating on messaging services such as Signal and Telegram, according to Swiss media.
Except, it’s fake.
According to Energy Department official, Simone Hug, the federal government has nothing to do with the poster.
“There are no such federal posters, nor do we call for people to be exposed,” said Hug, who added that the government is investigating who created the hoax.

Daniel Lewin: The Israeli-American 9/11 Hero
Daniel was born on May 14, 1970 (Israel’s 22nd Independence Day) in Denver, Colorado. He enjoyed a happy childhood with his parents and two brothers. At the age of 14, Daniel arrived in Israel when his parents decided to make aliyah, the act of Jewish immigration to Israel. In the beginning, adapting to the new culture was difficult. But little by little, Daniel fell in love with the country.
Ambitious and very talented, Daniel dedicated much of his time to his greatest passions: mathematics and computer science. At the age of just 16, Daniel was already training hard for his draft into the IDF and had a good reputation at “Samson’s Gym” in Jerusalem.
Daniel was able to lift heavy weights, and his physique was above average. He decided to try out for one of the most prestigious units in the IDF: Sayeret Matkal…
After his military service, Daniel worked as a researcher at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa… However, Daniel was not just a skilled researcher. He was also a devoted husband to Anne and his two sons, Itamar and Eitan…
In 1996, Daniel received a scholarship to do his PhD at MIT, the most prestigious university for computer science in the world. There, he continued his research and wrote an algorithm that would forever change the internet. Daniel found a practical use for the concept of “consistent hashing” and used it to enable websites to handle higher user traffic.
In 1998, together with his professor, Tom Leighton, and other partners, he co-founded Akamai Technologies. Daniel became a millionaire before his thirties…
On September 11, 2001, Daniel was on his way to a business trip in Los Angeles. He was sitting in business class, dressed modestly in Gap jeans and a simple T-shirt. It is impossible to know exactly what occurred on that flight, but according to an FBI report and flight attendant records, Daniel tried to stop the two Al-Qaeda terrorists in front of him. He was seated in row 9, but the passenger behind him, the third terrorist, stabbed him. That makes Daniel the first victim of 9/11. He was only 31 years old.
When the disaster struck, people turned to the internet to see if their relatives survived. The website of federal institutions, newspapers, and others were crashing due to heavy user traffic. Many companies reached out to Akamai Technologies in order to help them find their loved ones.
Today, the legacy of Daniel Lewin, former IDF soldier and internet pioneer, is still alive. May his memory be a blessing.
