Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

    Pathways to Russian Escalation Against NATO from the Ukraine War

    The potential for Russia to decide to escalate the ongoing war in Ukraine by attacking a U.S. or allied target is a significant concern. This Perspective summarizes the most-plausible pathways that could lead to a Russian decision to target NATO member states during the current conflict, describes the conditions under which Moscow might undertake such actions, and lays out how U.S. and NATO actions – including ongoing military assistance to Ukraine – could affect each pathway’s likelihood.

    The authors conclude with a set of key considerations for U.S. policymakers to help them manage escalation risks while continuing to pursue U.S. objectives in the context of the war in Ukraine.

    Although escalation risks stemming from this war are real and significant, this Perspective helps to bound those concerns; a Russia-NATO war is far from an inevitable outcome of the current conflict.

    U.S. and allied policymakers should be concerned with specific pathways and potential triggers, but they need not operate under the assumption that every action will entail acute escalation risks.

      Dmitri Trenin: Russia cannot afford to lose in Ukraine, but neither can the US – is there a non-nuclear way out of the deadlock?

      The threat of the conflict in Ukraine getting out of control is not just an ever-present concern, but a reality.

      The authors of the RAND Corporation’s recent paper, ‘Pathways to Russian Escalation Against NATO From the Ukraine War’, warn US policymakers to be careful in their statements and moves. This is particularly when deciding on military postures, deployment patterns, weapons capabilities, and the like, so that the steps taken by them do not provoke the Russian leadership into pre-emptive or retaliatory strikes, including using non-strategic nuclear weapons, or taking the campaign into NATO territory.

      This is totally in line with America’s overall approach of doing the maximum to weaken Russia on the battlefield in Ukraine while avoiding being drawn directly into a war against Moscow.

      Seen from here, Washington is clearly escalating its participation in the conflict by constantly testing the limits of Russian tolerance of these moves. It started with the provision to Kiev of Javelin anti-tank systems; it was then amplified to include M777 howitzers and HIMARS MLRS systems; it is now moving in the direction of providing Ukraine with US-made military aircraft and training its pilots to fly them.

      In addition to the new packages of Western sanctions, Russia is also facing pressure on its geopolitically vulnerable outposts, whether regarding goods transit to and from its Kaliningrad exclave or the status of its forces in Transnistria, a small territory wedged between Ukraine and Moldova. Some refer to the latter as attempts by America’s junior allies in Eastern Europe to open a second front against Russia.

      So far, Russia’s actions and inaction have sometimes appeared surprising, even puzzling to US watchers. Moscow has refrained from strikes against transport links to Poland, cyberattacks against Ukrainian – not to mention US – critical infrastructure, or even destroying bridges across the Dnieper River…

      Moscow’s failure to respond immediately to high-profile Ukrainian actions, such as the constant shelling of the center of Donetsk; missile attacks against Russian villages and towns close to their shared border; or even the loss of the Moskva, the flagship of its Black Sea Fleet, hit and sunk by Ukraine with the material assistance of the United States, probably demonstrates the Kremlin’s unwillingness to be provoked by the enemy. President Vladimir Putin probably prefers his revenge to be served cold, and at the time of his choosing…

      Things may become even more serious, however, if the US or its NATO allies enter Ukraine, or otherwise become directly involved in the conflict; if the material assistance which they provide to Kiev starts making a major difference on the battlefield; or if those weapons are used to strike significant targets on Russia’s territory, such as the Crimean Bridge.

      There are parallel American concerns about Russia attacking transshipment points on NATO territory, launching significant counter-attacks against the United States or its allies, and using weapons of mass destruction…

But in light of recent revelations that the FBI played an active role in accusing innocent people of being Russian puppets or lying about the Hunter Biden laptop (e.g., FBI told Facebook, per Mark Zuckerberg, that the Hunter Biden laptop was Russian disinformation), the FBI was busy telling members of Congress the same lie about Andriy Telizhenko.

    On Thursday, Dana Nessel appointed the Democrat prosecutor from Muskegon Co, DJ Hilson, as special prosecutor to investigate election fraud election “tampering”.

    The Gateway Pundit has reported on numerous discrepancies in Michigan over and over again, including the “Antrim Flip” which has never been adequately explained and was mysteriously thrown out of the court the day they were to receive critical network data in discovery. Pure coincidence.

  8. JAN 28 2022 – The French Connection: from the Wuhan Lab to Moderna.

    How Alain Merieux and current Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel helped build the Wuhan level 4 Lab.

    There are coincidences in nature, and in life, but sometimes the stars align a little too perfectly for this skeptical mind:

    In 2004 the Chinese contacted the French company bioMerieux owned by Alain Merieux, (who is a personal friend of now dictator Xi Jinping) to design a level 4 bio facility in Wuhan, China as the Chinese had limited experience in designing a level 4 facility. This facility would take a full ten years to come to fruition, but during that time, the now CEO of Moderna was formerly the CEO of bioMerieux (2007-2011) through which time he overseen the design of the now infamous Wuhan lab. It was revealed in August of 2021 that The Wuhan lab had serious ventilation issues as described in the House Foreign Affairs Committee Origins of Covid Report. In September of 2019 the WIV took its virus database off the internet, not long after that the WIV had a contract competition to renovate its air conditioning/ventilation system. The contract ended up being for a total of $606 million, evidence of which the Chinese Ministry of Finance later pulled according to WaPo journalist Josh Rogin. The WIV level 4 lab was inaugurated on January 31, 2015, after being designed by the aforementioned French company, and was built by the Chinese end of that partnership. The question is this: did the Chinese know the French designed a horribly flawed ventilation system that bioMerieux also apparently never finished, or were they just as surprised as the rest of the world? Since the Chinese CDC was at Event 201, it’s hard to say for certain.

    Considering that Stephane Bancel, one of the main people involved in the design of the WIV lvl4 lab left the company some three years before the actual construction of the lab does give him some plausible deniability… that is until you think about if for more than thirty seconds. What is the likelihood of Bancel overseeing the design of the WIV level 4 lab, then, leaving bioMerieux to become the CEO of the mRna vaccine company Moderna? Moderna was perfectly positioned to make billions of dollars through global emergency use authorizations after this illegally U.S. government funded (through Echo Health alliance via NIAID and Fauci according to DARPA documents obtained via a FOIA request) Gain of Function research created the Chimera spike protein which was inserted into the backbone of a Sars Cov virus. Which is why the French, nor the Americans would even entertain the idea of a lab leak, even though they all knew once the scientific community figured out the covid19 genetic sequence. A Novel virus, indeed.

    These actions perfectly created the needed catalyst to implement authoritarian control and vaccine mandates (as Fauci talked about wanting for flu since at least 2011) throughout the entire Western world. The technology that has been created such as, 5G (which can track your location within 6 inches, where 4G was 6 feet… social distancing indeed) facial recognition, contact tracing, algorithms designed to crush dissent are of no use for users of smart devices, they only benefit the very top of the pyramid. Even asking legitimate questions that stray from the narrative on social media will get you banned and smeared if you have enough followers. I guess we are to also ignore that the socially engineered cancel culture paradigm that was created over the last few years as another coincidence along the primrose path laid out by tech oligarchs, all of which have helped lay the foundations of Technocratic Totalitarianism in the West. This paradigm of cancel culture has been by far the biggest boon to technocrats here in the U.S., because without this, Americans would have never allowed such an assault on our personal liberties, Constitution, and Bill of Rights. Nor would we ever allow even the argument of mandated experimental medical procedures to creep into the cultural zeitgeist, let alone force them on our children. Which is why Fauci along with the amazing technocratic colored dream boat filled with megalomaniacal authoritarians, said, in the beginning of this plandemic that there would be absolutely no mandates. The last time that health mandates were forced in the U.S. it was to sterilize uppity women and the mentally challenged.

    The push to normalize vaccine mandates in countries all over the Western world, in lockstep, shows us how deep this particular rabbit hole goes. Then when you consider the arch of technology in the last 15 years, it’s all heading in the same direction… Technocracy. We have allowed psychological profiling of everyone that uses social media and or smart devices, spying on our phone calls, texts, emails, even private conversations between two people when around a smart device. We are told “it’s just for advertising” which in and of itself is absolutely insane to allow. However, we know these companies sell personal data to government spy agencies and their contractors, which are there for the illusion of separation of the State and corporate entities; or else we might figure out fascism is indeed alive and well living under the banner of government/corporate cooperation. Too bad most of the people dying from SarsCov2 are the ones old enough to remember why that is a huge problem. This cooperation between corporate entities and governments have been laid out many times; read through the 2017 SPARS Pandemic exercise 2025-2028 or Event 201 which took place in October 2019 literally after the leak/release from the WIV. The same people that have been preparing for a pandemic are the same people that have direct connections to creating SarsCov2. If this were any ordinary court case, everyone involved would be convicted and die in prison.

    What does all this mean? I think that for the last two decades, starting with 9/11 that most of this has been planned by shady global oligarchs in Saudi Arabia, Israel, China, France, Germany, The U.K. and the U.S. to create a global government that will allow top-down control via biosecurity measures that will take place over the course of many years. Every action taken by these governments since 9/11 have flowed in the same direction, incredibly. Of course, all of these entities have their own interests, problems, dissenters, and courses of action that align with their current cultures, respectively. Though when one looks at things from a falcons’ eye view, a larger picture starts to come into frame; an image of which was clear to people like Orwell and Huxley. (Though I think Huxley was indeed a technocrat himself, and his book wasn’t so much of a warning as it was a technocratic road map, but it is still worth reading.) These are not random events culminating with the paradigm in which we currently face, they are grand chessboard plans laid out and agreed upon by oligarchs at events like DAVOS. Which is why us plebes are never allowed to know what is said at those types of meetings. The easiest way to dissolve a conspiracy theory is to have transparency. Of course, this will never happen, because there are in fact powerful people conspiring all of the time and they will only go to prison if they pull a Bernie Madoff or are a convenient patsy, like Perdue Pharma owners, the Sackler family taking the wrap in the media for the entire medical establishments murder of hundreds of thousands of Americans with opiates. Why? you may ask. Addictions help to thin the herd of the weak and those that are useless eaters, which is, along with the implementation of the PATRIOT ACT, the reason we invaded Afghanistan was for minerals and control of the world’s opium, not to kill a Saudi terrorist. Along comes SarsCov2 to do a similar thing; allow the previously unallowable. The virus was incredibly designed as well, as it does not hurt children at all. In fact, Influenza kills more kids on an average year than have ever died from SarsCov2. Which is why child vaccinations for covid19 is absolutely insane as kids are more likely to be injured from the mRna gene therapy than the virus it doesn’t stop you from contracting or spreading to others.

    Killing of the weak and lame, forced obedience of the majority, and crushing voices of dissent is just the beginning. With the covid narrative falling apart one must really wonder what the social engineers have in store for all of us in the near future. My guess is global economic collapse that will no doubt be blamed on terrorist hackers to bring in a global digital currency. At least, if Klauss Schwab and the WEF Future Leaders have their way.

    AUG 15 2022 – The COVID lab leak theory is dead. Here’s how we know the virus came from a Wuhan market

    My colleagues and I published the most detailed studies of the earliest events in the COVID-19 pandemic last month in the journal Science.

    Together, these papers paint a coherent evidence-based picture of what took place in the city of Wuhan during the latter part of 2019.

    The take-home message is the COVID pandemic probably did begin where the first cases were detected – at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market.

    At the same time this lays to rest the idea that the virus escaped from a laboratory.

    Huanan market was the pandemic epicentre
    An analysis of the geographic locations of the earliest known COVID cases – dating to December 2019 – revealed a strong clustering around the Huanan market. This was true not only for people who worked at or visited the market, but also for those who had no links to it.

    Although there will be many missing cases, there’s no evidence of widespread sampling bias: the first COVID cases were not identified simply because they were linked to the Huanan market.

    The Huanan market was the pandemic epicentre. From its origin there, the SARS-CoV-2 virus rapidly spread to other locations in Wuhan in early 2020 and then to the rest of the world.

    The Huanan market is an indoor space about the size of two soccer fields. The word “seafood” in its name leaves a misleading impression of its function. When I visited the market in 2014, a variety of live wildlife was for sale including raccoon dogs and muskrats.

    At the time I suggested to my Chinese colleagues that we sample these market animals for viruses. Instead, they set up a virological surveillance study at the nearby Wuhan Central Hospital, which later cared for many of the earliest COVID patients.

    Wildlife were also on sale in the Huanan market in 2019. After the Chinese authorities closed the market on January 1 2020, investigative teams swabbed surfaces, door handles, drains, frozen animals and so on.

    Most of the samples that later tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 were from the south-western corner of the market. The wildlife I saw for sale on my visit in 2014 were in the south-western corner.

    This establishes a simple and plausible pathway for the virus to jump from animals to humans.

    Animal spillover

    SARS-CoV-2 has evolved into an array of lineages, some familiar to us as the “variants of concern” (what we call Delta, Omicron and so on). The first split in the SARS-CoV-2 family tree – between the “A” and “B” lineages – occurred very early in the pandemic. Both lineages have an epicentre at the market and both were detected there.

    Further analyses suggest the A and B lineages were the products of separate jumps from animals. This simply means there was a pool of infected animals in the Huanan market, fuelling multiple exposure events.

    Reconstructing the history of mutations in the SARS-CoV-2 genome sequence through time showed the B lineage was the first to jump to humans. It was followed, perhaps a few weeks later, by the A lineage.

    All these events are estimated to have occurred no earlier than late October 2019. Claims that the virus was spreading before this date can be dismissed.

    What’s missing, of course, is that we don’t yet know exactly which animals were involved in the transfer of SARS-CoV-2 to humans. Live wildlife were removed from the Huanan market before the investigative team entered, increasing public safety but hampering origin hunting.

    The opportunity to find the direct animal host has probably passed. As the virus likely rapidly spread through its animal reservoir, it’s overly optimistic to think it would still be circulating in these animals today.

    The absence of a definitive animal source has been taken as tacit support for counter claims that SARS-CoV-2 in fact “leaked” from a scientific laboratory – the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

    Death knell for the lab leak theory

    The lab leak theory rests on an unfortunate COINCIDENCE : that SARS-CoV-2 emerged in a city with a laboratory that works on bat coronaviruses.

    Some of these bat coronaviruses are closely related to SARS-CoV-2. But not close enough to be direct ancestors.

    Sadly, the focus on the Wuhan Institute of Virology has distracted us from a far more important connection: that, like SARS-CoV-1 (which emerged in late 2002) before it, there’s a direct link between a coronavirus outbreak and a live animal market.

    Consider the odds that a virus that leaked from a lab was first detected at the very place where you would expect it to emerge if it in fact had a natural animal origin – vanishingly low. And these odds drop further as we need to link both the A and B lineages to the market.

    Was the market just the location of a super-spreading event? Nothing says so. It wasn’t a crowded location in the bustling and globally connected metropolis of Wuhan. It’s not even close to being the busiest market or shopping mall in the city.

    For the lab leak theory to be true, SARS-CoV-2 must have been present in the Wuhan Institute of Virology before the pandemic started. This would convince me.

    But the inconvenient truth is there’s not a single piece of data suggesting this. There’s no evidence for a genome sequence or isolate of a precursor virus at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Not from gene sequence databases, scientific publications, annual reports, student theses, social media, or emails.

    Even the intelligence community has found nothing. Nothing. And there was no reason to keep any work on a SARS-CoV-2 ancestor secret before the pandemic.

    To assign the origin of SARS-CoV-2 to the Wuhan Institute of Virology requires a set of increasingly implausible “what if?” scenarios. These eventually lead to preposterous suggestions of clandestine bioweapon research.

    The lab leak theory stands as an unfalsifiable allegation. If an investigation of the lab found no evidence of a leak, the scientists involved would simply be accused of hiding the relevant material. If not a conspiracy theory, it’s a theory requiring a conspiracy.

    It provides a convenient vehicle for calls to limit, if not ban outright, gain-of-function research in which viruses with greatly different properties are created in labs. Whether or not SARS-CoV-2 originated in this manner is incidental.

    Wounds that may never be healed

    The acrid stench of xenophobia lingers over much of this discussion. Fervent dismissals by the Chinese scientists of anything untoward are blithely cast as lies.

    Yet during this crucial period these same scientists were going to international conferences and welcoming visitors. Do we honestly believe they would have such a pathological disdain for the consequences of their actions?

    The debate over the origins of COVID has opened wounds that may never be healed. It has armed a distrust in science and fuelled divisive political opinion. Individual scientists have been assigned the sins of their governments.

    The incessant blame game and finger pointing has reduced the chances of finding viral origins even further. History won’t judge this period kindly.

    Global collaboration is the bedrock of effective pandemic prevention, but we’re in danger of destroying rather than building relationships. We may even be less prepared for a pandemic than in 2019. Despite political barriers and a salivating media, the evidence for a natural animal origin for SARS-CoV-2 has increased over the past two years. To deny it puts us all at risk.

Long before the establishment of diplomatic relationship between China and France, Alan Merieux’s father-in-law actively promoted the cooperation in automobiles between the two countries and got praised by Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping and other Chinese leaders of the older generations. Over the past several decades, BioMerieux Research Center has carried out cooperation with China in the fields of tuberculosis prevention and treatment, infection control, and prevention and control of emerging infectious diseases. Both sides have set up a base for production, research and development in Shanghai, and jointly established a P4 high-grade biosafety laboratory in Wuhan . In 2012, when Alain Merieux visited China, he was received by Xi Jinping, the then Vice President of China. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of China-France diplomatic relationship, Alain Merieux serves as French Chairman of the Patronage Committee of the celebration. After the introduction, Xi Jinping said, I am glad to see that Merieux Group has made so much achievements in cooperation with China. I appreciate your contributions to promoting China-France friendly cooperation.

    • SEPTEMBER 2021 – WAPO – Inside the Wuhan lab: French engineering, deadly viruses and a big mystery

      One chilly morning in February 2017, a tall Chinese scientist in his 50s named Yuan Zhiming showed Bernard Cazeneuve, then the French prime minister, around Wuhan’s new high-securi­ty pathogen lab.

      Built with French engineering, it was China’s first P4 lab, one of several dozen in the world with that highest security designation. Yuan, the director of the lab, had worked more than a decade to make it a reality.

      Yuan and his colleagues at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) hoped they could help prevent another catastrophe like the SARS outbreak in 2003, which embarrassed Beijing and resulted in the dismissal of the health minister.

      But just a couple of years after the P4 lab’s ribbon-cutting, China was engulfed in a far deadlier outbreak. Yuan’s team had not prevented it. And worse, some suspected that lab personnel might have been involved in its genesis.

      Yuan has vociferously denied that the WIV had any part in the coronavirus pandemic’s origins. “The Wuhan P4 lab has never seen any laboratory leaks or human infections since it began operating in 2018,” Yuan said at a news conference in July.

      Amid the scrutiny, the WIV has turned inward. Yuan said at the news conference that his team took a virus database offline because of “the large number of malicious attacks,” and he complained that he and his colleagues are under great pressure from rumors.

      U.S. intelligence agencies said in a report last month that the virus was not a biological weapon and that it’s unclear whether it originated naturally or from a laboratory-associated incident. The report said confirmation is unlikely without China’s cooperation, which Beijing withdrew in July.

      For Yuan and his team, it means the cloud of suspicion lingers. After their high hopes, it’s a disappointment.

      “Scientific collaboration in virology — it’s gone,” said a foreign researcher who has worked for years with the WIV and who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the hostile political climate. “Now, the Chinese will not welcome foreigners because their view is, you’re coming in to dig dirt.”

      This account of the WIV’s 65-year history, its coronavirus research and its P4 lab is based on interviews with visiting scientists, lab audit reports, satellite images, archival records and other documentation. The WIV did not respond to requests for comment.

      The P4 lab is located off an eight-lane road on Wuhan’s southern industrial outskirts, where factories give way to low mountains and farmland. The lab facilities cover roughly two football fields, on a tract of land 12 times as large, according to a June 2018 environmental safety audit report.

      The building’s austere gray lines are softened by trees: From 2005 to 2015, when the lab was under construction, scientists would drive out on Arbor Day to add a few more saplings to the perimeter.

      Based on the French P4 lab in Lyon, the building has four floors: waste management at the bottom; experimental labs and animal rooms on the main floor; and on the top two, apparatuses to ensure safe airflow, the report says.

      Visitors called it state-of-the-art, in contrast to other, aging WIV buildings, where scientists wore coats indoors in winter because of scant heating.

      The lab had “the newest technology, a huge complex,” recalled Boris Klempa, a Slovak Academy of Sciences researcher who visited in 2017.

      Not everything there was meant for public eyes. When a reporter for the state-run Guangzhou Daily asked in 2018 what kind of viruses were being kept, the P4 lab’s deputy director, Song Donglin, replied that “disclosure of this kind of information must be controlled.”

      WIV management has reminded staffers for years about state-secrets requirements and warned them to be wary of foreign spies.

      Jean-Pierre de Cavel, a French expert who conducted safety training at the WIV in 2010, said the Chinese researchers hoped to use the new lab to study highly infectious diseases such as Ebola, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever and smallpox.

      “Their expectations were to have a powerful tool, to have a P4, like any other big country,” he said. “They wanted to have the best of the best.”

      The new P4 lab was not being used for researching coronaviruses, however, which are classified at lower security levels.

      A virus archive

      At a scientific conference in Barcelona in 1986, Danish researcher Ole Skovmand met a gangly Chinese scientist in his early 20s. His name was Yuan Zhiming, and he was studying how to kill malaria-carrying mosquitoes with Bacillus sphaericus bacteria.

      Skovmand, 73, recalled that Yuan’s research at the time wasn’t cutting-edge. But it impressed Skovmand enough for him to help Yuan secure scholarships in France and Denmark. In Denmark, Yuan moonlighted as a cook in a Chinese restaurant and played ping-pong with Skovmand’s son, Skovmand said.

      Yuan was outgoing and garrulous, said Christina Nielsen-LeRoux­, research director of France’s National Institute for Agricultural Research, who met him in Europe two decades ago. Yuan would later reminisce about his time in Europe and occasionally gripe about having to set aside his research to focus on the P4 lab’s construction, Nielsen-LeRoux said.

      “He said, ‘I miss that day we spent together. It was one of the best things in my life,’?” she said.

      The WIV was beginning to hit its stride then, after tumultuous origins.

      Founded in 1956 as a branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the WIV initially focused on agricultural pests, a serious concern during the famine that began in 1959. During the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976, its research was disrupted, as 229 CAS scientists were killed in the political purges, according to official figures.

      After Chinese leader Deng Xiao­ping’s official welcoming of scientific research again in 1978, Beijing ordered the WIV to build the nation’s first archive of viruses, with 400 collected over a decade, according to an official history. In 1985, the WIV helped set up China’s first mechanized pesticide factory.

      Breakthrough discovery

      The WIV set its sights higher in 2003, with the SARS outbreak. Chen Zhu, the CAS’s top official for biological sciences and soon to be China’s health minister, asked the WIV to build a P4 lab, according to people familiar with the project.

      Yuan accompanied Chen to France to persuade French experts to take on the construction. President Hu Jintao flew to Paris in January 2004 to seal the deal.

      “Yuan Zhiming really wanted the P4 lab,” said Gabriel Gras, a French biosecurity expert who helped oversee the lab’s construction. “It’s the project of his life.”

      While the WIV had Beijing’s support for the P4 lab, it also struggled against bureaucracy. When SARS took hold, the WIV had such trouble getting official research access to the new virus that director Hu Zhihong ended up “stealing” a sample from a morgue, according to a 2006 article in the state-run China Youth Daily.

      Around this time, another fateful figure in the WIV’s story emerged. Yuan’s colleague, Shi Zhengli, was beginning to search bat caves for the origin of SARS.

      Shi was a year younger than Yuan and also had studied in France, specializing in aquatic viruses. Now she turned to bats, in collaboration with a prominent Singapore-based virologist, Linfa Wang. In 2004, her team collected samples from 408 bats across China.

      It was tough work. Shi and colleagues crawled on their stomachs through narrow caves, she recounted in a speech in June 2018. They caught bats with nets, releasing most of them after taking samples and occasionally taking a few bats back to the lab.

      Seven years into her search, Shi discovered in 2011 a close relative to SARS in a cave in subtropical Yunnan province. Her team’s paper, published in 2013, launched her to national prominence, and she gained the nickname “Bat Woman.”

      In 2014, at age 50, Shi received a $585,000 national grant to continue studying coronaviruses in China’s south. Three years later, her team announced that it had found all the genetic pieces of the SARS virus in bats in a Yunnan cave — essentially proving the disease’s origin.

      Meanwhile, Yuan’s 13-year endeavor was finally bearing fruit, with the P4 lab given the green light in 2017 to begin operation. The $42 million lab was not for everyday experiments. Only a handful of the WIV’s 300 scientists had been trained to use it, including Shi, the deputy director.

      ‘The situation worries me’

      Shi entered the international limelight on Jan. 23, 2020, the same day Chinese authorities sealed off Wuhan to contain a new disease. In a preprint paper, her team announced that it had found a virus 96.2 percent identical to the novel coronavirus.

      Shi had originally feared that the virus could have come from her lab, as she told Scientific American. But she has since become adamant that the WIV never crossed paths with the virus, saying that she checked the lab records and that all staffers tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies.

      Shi’s supporters say that if there had been a lab coverup, it’s unlikely the staff could have kept the secret from leaking out, especially with a full-court press by U.S. intelligence agencies. The U.S. intelligence report delivered to President Biden last month said that the coronavirus was not a bioweapon and that Chinese authorities did not know about the virus in advance.

      Yuan and Shi have retreated from the world amid the controversy. The “comprehensive news” section of the WIV’s website once highlighted international collaborations, but it has dwindled to politically correct posts about researchers studying the speeches of Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

      Nielsen-LeRoux said she last heard from Yuan in March 2020, toward the end of the Wuhan lockdown.

      “We had a very hard time in combating the infection in Wuhan,” Yuan wrote to her in an email. “The virus is spreading in your country, and more people are infected during the last days, and the situation worries me a lot. I am confident that we could finally curb the spreading of the virus with our joint effort, and our life will return back to normal soon.”

    • With 34 Vaccine Programs in Development, Moderna Eyes Global Launches

      Moderna is preparing for multiple product launches over the next several years, including RSV and flu vaccines, boosters for COVID-19 and mRNA programs for rare diseases.

      Between 2023 and 2026, Moderna anticipates multiple vaccine launches across the globe, beginning with boosters aimed at the various strains of COVID-19. In 2023, Moderna aims to pursue approval under the accelerated pathway for its flu vaccine mRNA-1010. As part of its launch plans, Moderna said it will continue investing in its manufacturing capabilities to support vaccine production.

      On Thursday, the Cambridge, Mass.-based company hosted its annual R&D day for investors. Leadership showcased the company’s clinical programs across multiple indications, including 34 vaccine programs in development.

      During its presentation, Chief Executive Officer Stéphane Bancel called that a remarkable number. He said Moderna has always been excited about the use of mRNA technology, nothing that the software-like nature of RNA has had the company excited about the mRNA modality.

      “We are investing for other launches and we are investing for scale… because with the pipeline that is coming, it is important that we do that to maximize the potential for patients,” Bancel said.

      Rare Diseases

      Among its presentations were proof-of-concept studies on rare diseases. Because mRNA is like software for the body, Bancel stated the company would be delving into rare diseases more and more due to the potential of the technology.

      These include potential therapeutics for multiple rare diseases, including propionic academia and methylmalonic acidemia, metabolic disorders that share disease pathology and glycogen storage diseases. For propionic academia (PA), the company is developing mRNA-3927, which encodes for two proteins that can help the body make the missing enzyme absent in PA patients. Moderna is enrolling patients in a Phase I/II study that will evaluate the safety and pharmacology of mRNA-3927.

      In methylmalonic academia (MMA), the company has enrolled the first two groups of patients in a Phase I/II study assessing the safety and pharmacology of mRNA-3705. The mRNA-based therapy is designed to instruct the body to restore the missing or dysfunctional proteins that cause MMA.

      For glycogen storage disease 1a, Moderna initiated the Phase I/II Ba1ance trial assessing a single intravenous dose of mRNA-3745. Enrollment in the trial is ongoing, and the company anticipates data in 2023. Moderna is also advancing a new development candidate, mRNA-3139, a potential drug for ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency. It uses the same lipid nanoparticle as the mRNA-3745 program for GSD1a.

      Respiratory Vaccines

      Moderna has already seen significant success with its COVID-19 vaccine. The company continues to develop booster doses that address new strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that run rampant across the globe.

      Moderna has launched two vaccine boosters to meet different needs across the largest markets: mRNA-1273.214 and mRNA-1273.222. mRNA-1273.214 targets both the original strain of SARS-CoV-2 and the Omicron variant of concern (BA.1). Moderna’s mRNA-1273.222 targets the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 variants, combined with mRNA-1273. A Phase II/III trial for this candidate is underway.

      The company’s seasonal influenza vaccine candidate, mRNA-1010, is in Phase III development in the Southern hemisphere, with approximately 6,000 patients. Moderna aims to initiate a Phase III trial in the Northern Hemisphere designed to evaluate mRNA-1010 against a licensed seasonal influenza vaccine.

      In RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), Moderna launched a Phase III trial that will evaluate mRNA-1345 in older adults aged 60 and above. The test has enrolled more than 24,000 patients so far. Full enrollment is expected at 34,000 patients. The study has been designed to provide an efficacy readout in the 2022-2023 winter season. In addition to older adults, RSV is also a virus of concern in young children. Moderna is also assessing mRNA-1345 in a Phase I trial in pediatric populations. There is currently no vaccine available for RSV.

      In addition to single-agent vaccines, Moderna is advancing several combination respiratory vaccines, including a fully enrolled Phase I/II trial testing mRNA-1073 for both COVID-19 and influenza. The company is also conducting a study of mRNA-1230, a vaccine candidate for COVID-19, influenza and RSV. A clinical trial for this vaccine is expected to be initiated this year.

      CMV and Cancer Vaccines

      Moderna is developing a vaccine for cytomegalovirus (CMV), a type of latent herpes virus known to cause long-term health problems in newborns. The company is assessing mRNA-1647 in the Phase III CMVictory that is designed to prevent congenital CMV. Enrollment in this study is ongoing.

      The company is also developing personalized cancer vaccines, including mRNA-4157, which is being assessed in combination with Merck’s Keytruda in patients with resected melanoma at high risk of recurrence. The combination is in Phase II, and primary data is expected by the end of the fourth quarter of this year.

      Pfizer, Moderna deals for revamped COVID shots won’t be enough without more funding, HHS says

      As U.S. regulators turn their attention to revamped, variant-specific COVID-19 vaccines for the fall, Pfizer and Moderna could have their retooled shots ready shortly after Labor Day, according to multiple reports.

      But while the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) late last week inked deals with both companies to initiate a new booster campaign in a couple of months, it warned in its release that this stock would not be enough for every single U.S. resident.

      The HHS locked up a deal for 66 million doses of Moderna’s bivalent COVID-19 vaccine booster candidate. It also inked an agreement to get 105 million bivalent booster doses from Pfizer and BioNTech. Should the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sign off on the updated prophylactics, HHS says it expects to receive its first deliveries of the retooled Pfizer and Moderna shots in “early fall.”

      However, the 171 million bivalent vaccine booster doses will not be sufficient for the U.S. population. And while the Pfizer and Moderna deals include an option for the U.S. to pick up an extra 300 million doses apiece—for a total of 600 million additional shots—“these options can only be exercised with additional funding from Congress,” HHS said.

      The Biden administration says it paid for the Moderna shots with cash from the $10 billion it was “forced to pull” from “critical COVID-19 response efforts” in the absence of additional coronavirus funding from Congress. HHS did not say specifically how much it was paying for the upcoming rounds of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

      The supply pacts come shortly after the FDA recommended vaccine makers update their shots to create bivalent boosters against the BA.4 and BA.5 omicron subvariants of the virus.

      “Pfizer and Moderna have indicated that they anticipate the modified vaccines being available as early as September,” an unnamed FDA spokesperson told CNN.

      Last week, U.S. regulators said they’d no longer weigh the authorization of a second COVID-19 booster shot for adults under the age of 50 this summer. The move is designed to create space for a revamped vaccine campaign this fall and winter, multiple news outlets reported.

      Pfizer recently stuck by its Comirnaty sales forecast of $32 billion for the full year. For the second quarter of 2022, the shot pulled down $8.8 billion.

      Moderna, for its part, has tallied advanced purchase agreements for its shot, Spikevax, in the vicinity of $21 billion for 2022.

    Somehow this case was assigned to Clinton-appointed Judge Donald Middlebrooks and Judge Ryon McCabe.

    Judge Donald Middlebrooks was appointed by Bill Clinton to the Southern District of Florida in May 1997

    President Trump urged the courts to replace the Clinton judge with someone who is not biased in the case.

    Judge Ryon McCabe later recused himself from the case.

    But Judge Donald Middlebrooks will not recuse himself from the case.

    Judge Donald Middlebrooks then announced he will deny President Trump’s motion to remove Judge Middlebrooks from the case.

    Democrat Clark County official Robert Telles was arrested on Wednesday evening on suspicion of murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German.

    Jeff German, 69, was found stabbed to death in front of his home Saturday morning.

  17. Woman Reportedly Beheaded With Sword In San Mateo County, California

    San Mateo County, California – The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a gruesome crime that occurred on Thursday.

    Around 11:50 a.m., Deputies say they were flagged down by a witness near Magnolia and Laurel.

    “Deputies arrived within minutes and located an adult female, deceased,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “Shortly thereafter, the suspect returned to the scene and was detained by deputies. He has since been placed under arrest for murder. The suspect was known to the victim and this is believed to be an isolated incident.”

    According to NBC Bay Area, the victim was beheaded with a sword.

    “Anytime someone loses their life, it’s certainly a tragedy,” said San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Eamonn Allen. “As far as the shocking nature of it, I do know that the deputies that first arrived on scene were a little beset by the scene. We are providing them peer support. We are also providing support for the witnesses that were on scene as well because there were several civilian witnesses.”

    The investigation is ongoing.

    At least one person has been killed and two injured in a stabbing attack in the southern German town of Ansbach on Thursday afternoon.

    A 30-year-old man attacked several passers-by in the vicinity of the Ansbach train station, injuring two people slightly, police said in a statement.

    After the first attacks, local police officers were alerted and, after arriving on the scene, shot the attacker as he approached to attack them and fatally wounded him.

    Witnesses consulted by the officers revealed that the man shouted “Allahu Akbar” (an expression of faith of Islam widely used in the Muslim world) several times during the execution of the crime.

    The authorities in charge of the investigation are checking whether the event may be related to an Islamist or terrorist background, the Ansbach police said in the missive.
