This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

It will allow countries indebted to the U.S. to default on their debt obligations without having their currencies revalued lower. It will be a commodities-based system. All countries will be permitted to back their currency with their commodity of choice. He explains how gold ultimately rises to the top as money precisely because of the utility of its uselessness. In our current situation we have the world reserve currency on the rocks, and when all concurrent currencies are also untethered fiats we have a unique historical phenomenon. No other efficient references for evaluating things currently exist since all currencies used in the world today are backed by little, or nothing. This leaves only gold as the highest form of money to offer, ultimately, world economic stabilization.

    Richard Moore, chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) known as MI6, also estimated that about 15,000 Russian troops had been killed so far in its war in Ukraine, adding that was “probably a conservative estimate.”

    Estimated? For God’s sake. Intelligence professionals do “estimates” when they do not have hard intelligence. You know, instead of relying on actual facts. For the intelligence novices taking time to read this let me try to give you some insight into the tools a professional intelligence agency should have at its disposal.

      Navy exercise in Black Sea proceeds at a distance as Ukraine fights along its own shores

      NAPLES, Italy — U.S. naval forces are taking part in a Black Sea exercise and visiting a Turkish city this week, bringing with them a message of NATO solidarity in the face of Russian aggression in Ukraine.

      Navy P-8A Poseidon patrol and reconnaissance planes from Task Force 67 based at Naval Air Station Sigonella in Sicily and expeditionary units from Task Force 68 based at Naval Station Rota in Spain are slated to participate in Breeze 2022, based in Bulgaria, Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet announced Friday.

      The Bulgarian port of Varna is about 370 miles south of the Ukrainian city of Odesa, which has been under attack by Russian forces.

      Meanwhile, USS Bainbridge, currently deployed to the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, made a scheduled port visit in the Sea of Marmara to Aksaz, Turkey, on Monday, the Navy said in a separate statement.

      The visit “provides another signal that the cohesion of the alliance is as strong as ever,” said Cmdr. Desmond Walker, Bainbridge’s executive officer.

      Soon after Russia launched its full-scale invasion into Ukraine on Feb. 24, Russian Black Sea Fleet submarines and patrol boats enforced a maritime blockade in the northern Black Sea, making it impossible for cargo ships, including those with Ukrainian grain, to safely transit the area.

      That’s eased somewhat in recent days after Russian forces abandoned the strategic stronghold of Snake Island, which allowed shipments of Ukrainian agricultural products to begin transiting through the Danube-Black Sea Canal in Romania, the Ukrainian navy tweeted on July 11.

      Additionally, Ukrainian strikes on Russian ships, including the sinking of the guided missile cruiser Moskva in April, have resulted in fewer Russian patrols near Odesa.

      However, fears of Russian attacks on merchant vessels and other watercraft remain. Last year, Russia threatened to fire on ships participating in the annual U.S.- and Ukraine-led multinational maritime exercise Sea Breeze if they intruded into Russian territorial waters.

      The threat followed a heated dispute in June 2021 involving a British warship traveling through the Black Sea.

      Led by the Bulgarian navy, Breeze started Thursday and will take place in and around the cities of Burgas and Varna though July 25, the Bulgarian News Agency reported Thursday.

      It will include 24 warships, cutters and auxiliary vessels, five planes and four helicopters manned by 1,390 naval personnel from 10 NATO member countries, including Albania, Belgium, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Romania and Turkey, according to the news agency.

      Task Force 68 units plan to take part in several events, including mine response, remote-operated vehicle searching techniques and underwater ordnance reconnaissance, the Navy said.

      Bainbridge’s visit to Aksaz makes it at least the second by a Navy destroyer to the city since Russia invaded Ukraine in February.

      USS Mitscher, then also deployed to the 6th Fleet area of operations, visited in March. Mitscher since has returned to its homeport in Norfolk, Va.

      Truman mostly has sailed in the Ionian, Adriatic and Mediterranean seas, supporting patrol and training flights in Eastern Europe since being deployed to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility in December.

      Truman also sailed in the northern Aegean Sea in March. It is expected to be relieved by the USS George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group in August, USNI News reported July 11.

      Sea Breeze 2022 Exercise takes place in Black Sea

      Annual military Sea Breeze Exercise is taking place in the Bulgarian waters of the Black Sea.

      This is reported by News.bg.

      Fleets of 11 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries are participating in the military maritime exercises.

      Naval forces of Bulgaria, Albania, Belgium, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Romania, the USA, Turkey, France, and the NATO Navy Command are participating in the exercises.

      24 warships and cutters, 5 aircraft, 4 helicopters, and 1,390 military personnel are participating in the Sea Breeze-2022 maneuvers.

      These are the first large-scale exercises in the Black Sea since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February this year.

      All necessary measures were taken in the training areas to ensure the safety of the participants due to the risk of free-floating anti-ship mines in the sea area.

      In recent years, summertime Sea Breeze Exercise was a traditional Black Sea naval maneuver that also included the Navy of Ukraine.

      Sea Breeze is a multinational military exercise that has been held on the territory of Ukraine since 1997 in accordance with the 1993 Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation on Defense and Military Relations between the US Department of Defense and the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

      The training consists of sea, land, and air components.

      Last year, the main tasks of the exercises were to prepare servicemen, headquarters, and units of the Navy of Ukraine for joint actions with military formations of the armed forces of NATO member states.

      The goals also included gaining experience in operational planning, conducting combat operations according to NATO standards and procedures, increasing the level of interoperability.

      US Navy Ships Stay Home As NATO Flexes Black Sea Muscle

      Every year, the US Navy sails warships into the Black Sea as part of Sea Breeze 2022 an annual joint military exercise with Romania and eight other NATO nations. The goal is to show solidarity and strength in the region. This year the US Navy will not be sending warships to the exercise because of fears of escalation and because of Turkey’s diplomatic blockade of NATO.

      Last year, the USS Ross, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, joined 31 other ships in the Black Sea for Sea Breeze 2021, hosted by Ukraine. This year the US Navy will not be sending any warships into the Black Sea. Instead it will send people, land and air-based assets.

      In addition to the US, no NATO warships from outside the region – including those from Great Britain, Germany, and France – have entered the Black Sea this month to attend.

      Russian Cargo Ship Blockade

      Soon after Russia invaded Ukraine in February, Russian Black Sea Fleet began attacking unarmed civilian NATO member nation owned cargo ships in efforts to enforce a maritime blockade in the northern Black Sea. The US Navy did little to stop this. These actions made it impossible for cargo ships, including those with Ukrainian grain, to safely transit the area.

      This month cargo ships resumed shipments in the region after Russia abandoned Snake Island and mines were cleared by from the region.

      Turkish Warship Blockade

      The US Navy – and all other allied NATO navies operating outside the Black Sea including the United Kingdom and France – decided not to respond for fear of escalating the conflict. Further complicating the issue was the decision by Turkey to close the Black Sea to all warships, not just those covered under the Montreux Convention. At the time a US CRS report for Congress warned that Turkey’s recent closure of the Bosporus and Dardanelles Straits to all navies could undermine the Montreux Convention – which allows them only to block Belligerent nations – and put NATO at a disadvantage in the Black Sea.

      Sea Breeze 2022 Assets

      This year’s exercise will include 24 warships, cutters and auxiliary vessels, five planes and four helicopters manned by 1,390 naval personnel from 10 NATO member countries, including Albania, Belgium, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Romania and Turkey, the news agency said.

      Although the United States won’t be sending a warship to Romania for Sea Breeze 2022, US Navy personnel and aircraft will participate in this year’s exercise. US Navy Task Force 68 will take part in several events, including mine response, remote-operated vehicle searching techniques and underwater ordnance reconnaissance, the Navy said. Task Force 67 will send P-8A Poseidon patrol and reconnaissance planes.

      Stars and Stripes reports that the aircraft carrier USS Truman sailed in the northern Aegean Sea in March and the USS Bainbridge, a US Navy destroyer, made a scheduled port visit in the Sea of Marmara to Aksaz, Turkey, on Monday.

      In the weeks leading up to last year’s Sea Breeze 2021 exercise Russia threatened to bomb the HMS Defender, a British Royal Navy warship operating near Crimea.

      The Biden administration on Friday rolled out a $270 million security assistance package for Ukraine on Friday, which includes four more high mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS) and hundreds of tactical drones.

      White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters that the package includes $175 million in presidential drawdown authority, which allows the Pentagon to send weapons from its own stockpiles.

      The remaining funds will go toward contracting up to 580 Phoenix “Ghost” unmanned aerial systems under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).

      The Pentagon first sent the drones in April, when it included 121 of as part of an $800 million weapons package. The drones are similar to the Switchblade drone — which is a small, rapidly deployable system that can fly short distances and is difficult to detect.

      The HIMARS will be included in the drawdown package, along with additional ammunition for the systems, as well as 36,000 rounds of artillery ammunition and anti-armor vehicles, Kirby said.

      The U.S. has now committed to providing 16 of the launchers to Ukraine, allowing Kiev to strike targets from greater distances inside of Ukraine.

      Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters on Thursday that the Russians have not destroyed any HIMARS that either the U.S. or allies have sent, and that they’re still being used on the battlefield.

      About 200 Ukrainians have been trained on the systems and that training on the HIMARS is continuing, Milley added.

      The U.S. has committed ­$8.2 billion in security assistance since the beginning of the Biden administration, of which $2.6 billion has been provided since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began.

      Putin’s forces attack and destroy U.S-made HIMARS in Ukraine

    • bloomberg –Turbine for Nord Stream 1 Is Still in Transit in Germany

      – A gas turbine for the operation of Gazprom PJSC’s Nord Stream 1 pipeline that’s the main route of gas transport from Russia to Germany is held up in transit after maintenance in Canada, the latest twist in an ongoing spat between the two countries.

      “Under normal circumstances, the maintenance of turbines is a routine operation for us. Naturally, we want to transport the turbine to its place of operation as quickly as possible. However, the time it takes is not exclusively within our control,” a spokesman for Siemens Energy, the manufacturer for the turbine, said in an emailed statement Thursday.

      The turbine, only a spare part for the pipeline, was sent to Siemens Energy’s Montreal site for repairs but became stranded due to sanctions on Russia’s oil and gas industry unveiled last month.

      Germany’s Economy Minister Robert Habeck proposed a workaround whereby the part would be delivered first to Germany, and from there to Russia.

      Gazprom last week said it requested documents from Siemens that will allow the return of the turbine. The papers, which the Russian gas giant requested July 15, should help move it amid sanctions regimes in Canada and the European Union back to the Portovaya compressor station — “a critical facility for the Nord Stream gas pipeline,” the firm said Saturday.

      Reuters reported earlier Thursday that the turbine was held up in transit in Cologne after returning from Canada and that Moscow had so far not provided documents needed to import it into Russia, including details on where exactly to deliver it and via which customs station.

      Portovaya is located about 20 kilometers from the Finnish border on the Russian side.

      TASS – Kremlin disavows any criticism over delayed return of turbine for Nord Stream

      Earlier, it was reported that the turbine got stuck during transit in Germany, allegedly because of lack of a permit from Russia

      MOSCOW, July 22. /TASS/. Any blame directed at Russia due to the delayed return of the turbine for the Nord Stream pipeline from Canada is groundless, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Friday.

      Earlier Reuters reported citing sources that the turbine got stuck during transit in Germany, allegedly because of lack of a permit from Russia.

      Peskov recalled the statement by President Vladimir Putin, on the night of July 20 in Tehran, that as of that time, Moscow had not received any legal, technological, or any other documentation on this turbine.

      “Therefore, any sort of admonishment [against Russia] is utterly unfounded, in this case it’s the wrong sources,” the Kremlin spokesman said. He stressed that in this story “the primary source” should be referred to, which is Gazprom.

      Peskov also pointed to the data of foreign media sources that claimed the Russian side allegedly did not provide information on where exactly the turbine should be brought to.

      “This is complete nonsense, because Siemens knows perfectly well where this turbine is installed. That is, this is just an absurd report from sources,” Putin’s press secretary emphasized.

      Since mid-June, the Nord Stream project has been operating at 40% of its maximum capacity due to the delayed return of gas compressor units from maintenance work. One of the turbines built by Siemens Energy in Canada was sent to Montreal for an overhaul. The producer refused to return the repaired turbine to Germany due to Canada’s sanctions against Russia.

      On July 9, after numerous requests, Canada decided to return the turbine to Germany. The return date has not been defined yet. The European Commission said that such actions do not violate sanctions against Russia since these measures do not apply to gas transit equipment.

      However, Gazprom did not receive documents from Siemens on the return of the gas turbine engine and sent a new request to the German company. The Russian gas giant spotlighted the fact that the return of the turbine under the conditions of sanctions and the subsequent overhaul of other engines affect the safe operation of Nord Stream.

      President Vladimir Putin said that if the turbine for Nord Stream is not returned to Russia, only 30 million cubic meters of gas per day can be pumped along the route instead of the current 60 million cubic meters. He highlighted the fact that at the end of July “another turbine should be sent” for maintenance work.

    JUNE 27 2022 – Despite official nudges, Japanese still not unmasking outside

    More than a month has passed since the government relaxed its guidance on mask usage to reflect subsiding fears of the coronavirus, yet its call for removing masks whenever possible has not caught on widely among the public.

    There has never been a mask mandate in the country, but more than two years of the pandemic has made mask-wearing the polite thing to do, even as heat-related illnesses are emerging as a concern as Japan readies for a boiling summer.

    Experts say many people are unaware the government has been proposing since May 20 that masks can be taken off in certain circumstances, which may remain so until a well-known figure like Prime Minister Fumio Kishida outlines the new guidelines publicly.

    The recommendation for outdoor mask usage now only applies to those conversing within 2 meters of each other. But most people continue wearing them outside regardless of circumstances.

    The government has made some efforts to increase public awareness of the changes, creating leaflets and planning to broadcast the message through commercials.

    There have been multiple cases of children who wore masks during gym classes being sent to hospital due to heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

    The education ministry has asked schools to let schoolchildren go maskless during physical activities, and for younger children to take masks off on their school commutes.

    For indoor masking, the public’s embrace of looser mask “rules” is even slower. Masking is now unnecessary for those keeping more than 2 meters apart when there is hardly any conversation.

    However, announcements in public spaces continue to call for strict mask-wearing, as companies remain vigilant against the coronavirus.

    East Japan Railway Co., whose train service includes the Tokyo metropolitan area, continues to ask passengers to wear masks at all times. The company said its announcements will “remain unchanged unless there is a request from the government.”

    According to an online survey conducted in May by Laibo, around 40% of the 708 respondents said they believe mask-wearing requests can end, but nearly 90% said they would continue wearing them.

    More than 48% said they would stop doing so if a “wonder drug” against COVID-19 was made.

    Around 62% said it is inappropriate to appear in public spaces without a mask, the survey showed.

    “Peer pressure is very strong in Japan, and people tend to modify their behaviors based on how others act,” said Naoki Sato, an honorary professor at the Kyushu Institute of Technology who is well versed in public attitudes. “The word ‘mask police’ was created during the pandemic, and the feeling that one cannot take their mask off remains.”

    Still, he said many people want to go maskless and the prime minister should make an effort to give “a science-based and impactful comment.”

    Arabic media is reporting that the Bahraini minister for Culture and Antiquities has lost her job because she refused to shake hands with the Israeli ambassador to Bahrain.

    According to the story, on June 16, US Ambassador to Bahrain Steven Bondy held a special memorial service at his home on the occasion of the death of his father.
