Reader’s Links for June 27th, 2022

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

    • The causes and consequences of the Ukraine war A lecture by John J. Mearsheimer

      ( 2 h 7 min )

Professor John J. Mearsheimer will discuss the current Russian invasion on Ukraine whilst exploring the potential causes and consequences of the crisis.

In this lecture, Prof. Mearsheimer will aim to focus on both the origins of the war in Ukraine and some of its most important consequences.

He will argue that the crisis is largely the result of the West’s efforts to turn Ukraine into a Western bulwark on Russia’s border. Russian leaders viewed that outcome as an existential threat that had to be thwarted.

While Vladimir Putin is certainly responsible for invading Ukraine and for Russia’s conduct in the war, Prof. Mearsheimer states that he does not believe he is an expansionist bent on creating a greater Russia.

Regarding the war’s consequences, the greatest danger is that the war will go on for months if not years, and that either NATO will get directly involved in the fighting or nuclear weapons will be used — or both.

Furthermore, enormous damage has already been inflicted on Ukraine. A prolonged war is likely to wreak even more devastation on Ukraine.

    • the gateway pundit – Understanding the NY Times Article on the CIA in Ukraine

[…]But all of this is window dressing to distract from the real news in the NY Times piece. It is in the last five paragraphs of the article:

The Ukrainian military’s most acute training problem right now is that it is losing its most battle-hardened and well-trained forces, according to former American officials who have worked with the Ukrainians.

The former Trump administration official said Special Operations Command had small groups of American operators working in the field with Ukrainian officials before the war. The American teams were sometimes called Jedburgh, a reference to a World War II effort to train partisans behind enemy lines, the official said.

The modern special operations teams mainly focused on training in small-unit tactics but also worked on communications, battlefield medicine, reconnaissance and other skills requested by Ukrainian forces. Those efforts, the official said, ended before the Russian invasion but would have been helpful if they had continued during the war.

Having American trainers on the ground now might not be worth the risks, other former officials said, especially if it prompted an escalation by President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.

“Would the enhancement of the training be worth the possible price that is going to have to be paid?” Mr. Wise said. “An answer is probably not.”

Got that? The most acute problem is that the best Ukrainian troops are dead, wounded or captured. There are no first rate troops left to train. Oh my. That is a problem and the United States is not going to put any of our troops into harms way. That is, for now, the Biden Administration’s policy. Putting “modern special operations teams” on the ground to train Ukrainians is, per the NY Times piece, too great a risk and carries a price that is not worth the outcome.

the conservative tree house A Very Dangerous Time Inside Ukraine as U.S. Officials Admit CIA and Pentagon Conducting Proxy War Effort from Kiev

We must always keep focus on the context for information that comes from the U.S. State Dept and the Central Intelligence Agency to the media. Yesterday, as Joe Biden was en route to the G7 summit in the Bavarian Alps, the New York Times published an article saying the CIA and Pentagon special forces are organizing and conducting the NATO war effort from a secret operation center in Kyiv.

Some viewed the article as the NYT violating operational security for the U.S. led effort. However, that perspective belies the nature of how the media is used in war by Dept of State and intelligence officials. The details of the Times article are attributed to “three U.S. officials,” and should be looked upon as purposeful.

In addition to the timing of Biden headed to the G7, the admission of CIA officials conducting the war effort from inside Ukraine, comes as NATO partner country Lithuania informs Russia that prior transit treaties to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad will not be honored. NATO is poking and provoking a response from Russia, the Times article is part of this effort.

Units deployed across eight eastern and southeastern NATO countries to deter Russia hostilities will rise in size from 1,000-strong battlegroups to brigades, which comprise around 3,000-5,000 troops with more war-fighting equipment in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

The decisions will be set out at a landmark summit this week in Madrid.

“Together, this constitutes the biggest overhaul of our collective deterrence and defence since the Cold War,” Jens Stoltenberg said, in a briefing at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Monday.

He said the 30-member alliance is expected to consider Russia to be “the most significant and direct threat to our security”.

[…]”We will transform the NATO Response Force and increase the number of our high readiness forces to well over 300,000,” the NATO chief said.

The NATO Response Force – which are kept at varying degrees of readiness to mobilise, from two days’ notice to six months – is currently around 40,000 soldiers, sailors and air personnel.

NATO summit in Madrid: “We will transform the NATO response force” (Jens Stoltenberg)

NATO will increase the number of its forces at high readiness massively to over 300,000, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said.

“We will transform the NATO response force and increase the number of our high readiness forces to well over 300,000,” he told reporters ahead of a NATO summit in Madrid later this week in Madrid.

NATO’s quick reaction force, the NATO response force, so far has some 40,000 troops.

At the Madrid summit, NATO will also change its language on Russia that in the alliance’s last strategy from 2010 was still described as a strategic partner.

“That will not be the case in the strategic concept that we will agree in Madrid,” Stoltenberg said.

“I expect that allies will state clearly that Russia poses a direct threat to our security, to our values, to the rules-based international order.”

EMMANUEL MACRON has demanded Iranian and Venezuelan oil returns to the EU market in a move that could spark resistance from Joe Biden.

A senior official at the French Presidency revealed they believed crude from Iran and Venezuela should be allowed to return to the market to help stabilize oil prices.

There is a “knot” in the shape of US sanctions on Iran that needs to be untied for that to happen, the official said. Diversification of supply and a temporary increase in oil output would also help mitigate the burden on consumers and businesses, the official said as the West struggles to move away from the Russian oil supply lines.

    • CNN Analysis: Tide turns in the Ukraine war as Russia makes progress in the east

Russian forces are arguably having their best spell since the invasion of Ukraine began four months ago.

They have eliminated most Ukrainian defenses in the Luhansk region, consolidated control of a belt of territory in the south, improved their logistics and command structure and blunted the effectiveness of Ukrainian attack drones.

Within the last week, the Russians have been rewarded for their intense — some would say merciless — bombardments of the remaining parts of the Luhansk region held by Ukrainian forces, which have finally given up Severodonetsk and lost territory south of Lysychansk.

The head of the self-declared Luhansk People’s Republic, Leonid Pasechnik, predicted last Friday that Russian forces would completely encircle Lysychansk within two or three days. So far they haven’t, but the city is in imminent peril.

Russian forces have also stepped up attacks in the Donetsk region, getting slightly closer to the belt of industrial towns in the region that runs south from Sloviansk through Kramatorsk to Kostiantynivka.

In Lysychansk and many of the towns studded across the meandering front lines that pass through five regions, the Ukrainians may well face a repeat of what happened in Severodonetsk, where they were bombarded into withdrawing. There was simply nothing left that could be defended.

The immediate dilemma for the Ukrainian military is whether it remains committed to defending Lysychansk, with the risk of losing troops and weapons if the city is encircled — and whether Ukraine’s political leadership will order a withdrawal to new defensive lines.

If so, can the units now in the pocket of territory held by Ukraine retreat without being decimated? Large sections of the highway from Lysychansk to Bakhmut are littered with wreckage, and Russian units are edging closer to Bakhmut itself.

    • Moderna, GSK, Sanofi, AstraZeneca and BioNTech Expand Global Ops

It’s been a busy month for big biopharma companies looking to further expand operations, with the likes of Moderna, AstraZeneca, Sanofi and more setting up new facilities internationally.
BioSpace looks at some of these moves below.

Moderna Sets Up mRNA Center In The UK

Moderna signed a deal with the U.K. government to build an mRNA innovation and technology center in the country. The agreement, in principle, allows for the creation of a state-of-the-art mRNA vaccine manufacturing facility to strengthen the company’s ability to respond to pandemic crises rapidly.

Included in the list of vaccine development programs planned for the new center are those for COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and seasonal influenza. The facility will be activated on an urgent basis as part of the U.K. government’s 100 Days Mission to manage future pandemics.

“We are excited to be able to continue our collaboration with the U.K. government and Vaccine Taskforce with this new mRNA Innovation and Technology Center in the U.K. The U.K. has established a world-class life sciences and research community,” Stéphane Bancel, chief executive of Moderna, commented in a statement.

Further investment into research and development, including exploring an Omicron-containing booster candidate, are among the plans for the new U.K. center.

AstraZeneca Chooses China For COPD Inhaler Production Plant

At the 3rd MNC Leaders Qingdao Summit, AstraZeneca announced plans to expand investment activities in China, starting with the construction of a production and supply facility that will serve as its regional headquarters in Qingdao, Shandong.

The new facility will focus on research and development efforts for rare disease treatments. It will include a life science innovation park and an industrial fund.

In the same event, AstraZeneca said it would build a Budigford inhalation aerosol production and supply center in the Qingdao High-tech Industrial Development Zone that will become the company’s second-largest facility in the country. Its other existing production plants are in Wuxi and Taizhou, Jiangsu.

“…To further promote the development of Qingdao’s biopharmaceutical industry and contribute to the National Health Vision 2030, AstraZeneca will continue to strengthen its confidence in increasing investment in China,” Wang Lei, AstraZeneca’s global executive vice president and China president, said.

AstraZeneca has been doing business in the Chinese market for the past 30 years.

GSK Sets Up Smart Factory in the UK

GlaxoSmithKline has opened a new aseptic smart manufacturing facility at its Barnard Castle location, featuring fully automatic capabilities to boost efficiency in the production of medications for commercial use.

The new plant will support GSK’s current pipeline and portfolio of drugs, with the goal to achieve nature positive and net zero targets by 2030. The high-tech facility will use digital technology in its manufacturing processes called the Q Block.

“This investment demonstrates GSK’s commitment to the local area and I look forward to continuing to build a skilled team of people from across a mix of disciplines. What we do together here makes a difference to patients every day and I am honored to work alongside such a committed team,” Elizabeth Rowbotham, site director at GSK’s Barnard Castle facility, told local reporters.

Sanofi Launches AI Center in Toronto

Sanofi bolstered its network of international digital hubs by opening a new Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence in Toronto.

The new facility will focus on using technology to develop AI products and world-class data to help discover life-saving therapies for various diseases. To support this new center, Sanofi is hiring over 100 highly-skilled tech employees, with the goal to have a 200-strong workforce by 2025.

“The establishment of our global AI Centre of Excellence in Toronto represents a key investment in Sanofi’s growing footprint in Canada, and in our global multidisciplinary approach to transforming the practice of medicine to improve people’s lives around the world. Sanofi Canada’s heritage in the province of Ontario is over 100 years in the making and continues to evolve,” Stephanie Veyrun-Manetti, Canada country lead for Sanofi, commented in a statement.

Sanofi’s other AI facilities are in Boston, New York, Barcelona and Paris.

BioNTech Builds Vaccine Facility In Africa

Kigali, Rwanda, is the site of BioNTech’s first scalable mRNA vaccine production plant in Africa, and the first batch of manufacturing BioNTainers is expected to reach the country before 2022 ends.

The new facility will initially be managed by staff from BioNTech’s Germany sites, who are poised to train some 100 colleagues to run the production and all laboratory and quality assurance processes locally when the new center is up and running. The company has started hiring local personnel, including around 20 key positions. When the site is ready to go, all vaccines to be produced in the network will be dedicated to the people living in member states of the African Union.

“I applaud the company’s commitment to working with Africa on a continental basis to help secure our vaccine resilience for the future, and invest in new research to address the endemic diseases that disproportionately affect our people. Working with our partners, Rwanda intends to build on this investment to attract a vibrant biopharmaceutical research and manufacturing sector,” Republic of Rwanda President H.E. Paul Kagame noted.

More similar facilities are in the works for South Africa and Senegal.

Sanofi tees off work on €400M ‘factory of the future’ in Singapore

By the middle of the decade, Sanofi’s “factory of the future” in Singapore could become a reality.

The French pharma kicked off construction on the first of two so-called Evolutive Vaccine Facilities(EVFs) it’s standing up through a combined investment of 900 million euros (about $976 million). The other plant is coming online in France. Together, the EVFs will help “pave the way for future vaccine innovation across the world,” the company said in a release.

Sanofi isn’t stopping at vaccines, either. Its pair of EVFs are designed for “agile and flexible” production of “multiple” vaccine and biologics platforms, including mRNA, enzymes and monoclonal antibodies, Sanofi said.

The Singapore EVF—which the company is backing with a cool 400 million euros ($434 million)—is a “first-of-its-kind,” fully digitalized and modular vaccine production plant capable of producing shots for Asia on a “large scale,” Sanofi said. The facility will capitalize on Singapore’s position as a regional “innovation hub for the healthcare industry,” the company added.

“To proceed with massive investments like the EVF, you need to have a whole ecosystem of suppliers of raw materials, of starters, of innovation technologies in the same area,” Thomas Triomphe, Sanofi’s executive vice president for vaccines, said in an interview with the Singapore daily The Straits Times.

Sanofi already employs more than 500 people in the country, and it plans to recruit another 200 over the next five years as its EVF project proceeds. The Singapore plant is expected to be complete by the end of 2025, the company added in its release.

Designed for adaptability during current and future public health crises, the Singapore EVF hinges on a central unit comprised of several “fully digitised modules,” Sanofi says. Those modules will be able to crank out up to four vaccines at once. That holds true “regardless of the vaccine technology used,” whether that be protein, mRNA or some other platform, Sanofi said.

In addition, the site will be set up to swiftly “switch” its configuration toward a singular vaccine process to boost supplies and adapt to evolving public health needs such as a pandemic.

“We know that Covid-19 is not going to be here forever,” Triomphe told The Straits Times. “So with these evolutive facilities, we are already planting the seeds and preparing for the next pandemic, and this is the level of agility that you need.”

Prior to the pandemic, GlaxoSmithKline operated Singapore’s lone vaccine plant. That site has been churning out components for GSK’s childhood bacterial vaccines since 2011, The Straits Times pointed out.

That now appears to be changing thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aside from Sanofi, Pfizer’s German partner BioNTech plus its mRNA rival Moderna have both telegraphed plans to set up shop in the Southeast Asian country.

BioNTech last May pulled back the curtain on plans for a Southeast Asia regional headquarters in Singapore, which will include a highly automated mRNA manufacturing facility. The plant will eventually boast an estimated capacity of several hundred million mRNA vaccine doses a year, the company said at the time.

Moderna in February sketched plans for a quartet of new subsidiaries in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan to expand its commercial footprint in Asia. The continent now represents an “integral part” of the company’s business, Moderna said in a release earlier this year. So far, Moderna’s Singapore stake seems less focused on manufacturing.
