Reader’s Links for July 12, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

The NY Post has the latest appalling news out of New Haven.
Yale University is offering a course this fall that likens the US prison system to the Soviet Gulag, with one of the professors leading the course describing America as home to “one of the most brutal prison societies in human history” on social media Monday.

The course, titled “Mass Incarceration in the Soviet Union and the United States” is billed by the Ivy League school as “[a]n investigation of the experience and purposes of mass incarceration in the Soviet Union and the United States in the twentieth century.”

“Incarceration is central to the understanding, if not usually to the self-understanding, of a society. It is thus a crucial aperture into basic questions of values and practices,” reads the online course description. “This course proposes a frontal approach to the subject, by investigating two of the major carceral systems of the twentieth century, the Soviet and the American.”

The description adds that the course will touch on “important comparative cases, such as Nazi Germany and communist China.”

The word “Gulag” is commonly used to refer to the system of Soviet labor camps where common criminals and political prisoners alike were held during the first four decades after the Russian Revolution. Scholars relying on recently opened Soviet archives estimate that approximately 1.6 million prisoners died in the camps between 1930 and 1953; however, some historians believe the true number of deaths to be between three and four times greater.

“Gulag” entered the English lexicon with the 1974 publication of “The Gulag Archipelago,” a searing account of life in the camps written by dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

The course will be led by Yale history professor Timothy Snyder and philosophy professor Jason Stanley. On Monday, Stanley explained the background of the course on Twitter.

“The United States is the nation with the highest incarceration rate in the world, and has been for many decades. Almost 10 [percent] of the WORLD’s prison population comes from the US’s traditionally oppressed minority, the 38 million Black Americans. US prisons are famous for brutality,” he tweeted.

“A small handful of ethnic groups in human history have faced such extraordinary rates of incarceration. But few for so many decades. Why perpetuate this cycle? Is this how the US wants history to remember it? As one of the most brutal prison societies in human history?

You’ve hit a nerve with this one, Michelle. Sacrificing reality for idealism is a mug’s game. It may also get you injured or killed.

Someone close to me now claims to have COPD. This person was never a smoker. His shortness of breath, he claims, began before his Covid-19 injection(s). This may be true. I don’t know.

What I do know is that COPD is a possible adverse reaction to mRNA injections, as stated by some doctors, due to the concentration of spike proteins in the capilliaries. I also know that this person’s devotion to leftist ideology is very strong. So much so, in fact, that he is governed in much of his thinking by belief in man-made climate change, and faith in the greater wisdom of collectivist government policies over that of the individual. His eager acceptance of the injection, in other words, was not because he had the practical necessity to remain employed or to travel for good reason, but because it suited him ideologically.

The Wuhan flu injection tragedy unfolding may be of epic proportions. Conversely, can peoples’ fear of the injections also represent an ideologically-driven tragedy in that it prevents the protection of a live-saving innoculation? Well, this is precisely the task of all remaining doctors with integrity (not politicized) to decide, is it not? I would submit, however, that given the real death rate of Covid-19, and given that our governments now hold our bodies in contempt with or without innoculation, the truth of this matter is already available.

I am sure Alexander Solzhenitsyn offered us the concept somewhere in his writings that the Gulag Archipelago is not only a physical place, but an ideological place to which the collectivist condemns himself for seeing the world as he wishes, rather than as it is, and does so at the ultimate personal expense.

Apologies in advance if this comment posts twice. It wouldn’t post initially for some reason.

A day in the garden of good and evil: Cuba shouts ‘Libertad’; America dances with death
By J.E. Dyer July 12, 2021When it first dawned, Sunday, 11 July 2021, didn’t seem like it would turn out to be much. At least the forecast was for a high a few degrees cooler than the last week in inland SoCal, but other than that, it looked like same old same old.

That was before the news began flooding out that the people of Cuba were surging into the streets shouting “Libertad!” and “Cuba Libre!” and demanding freedom from communist dictatorship.

Dear Folks, our leaders today are addicted to media sensationalism. I can see how the Marieral Graveyard news is causing a lot of heartbreak and emotional breakdowns. Please listen to your Elderly folks as well.

We respected the Church, we respected the dead, we buried our people with a proper funeral. Then we allowed them to rest in peace.

Please be aware that this cemetery with all races and ages of people buried there. The headstones were removed in 1966-1967, as a first step in refurbishing as the old markers were damaged by weather, age or animals.

The second step of replacing the old and broken headstones wasn’t completed. Parishioners had moved away or passed on or were simply unable to put up a marker for various reasons.

Please know that it is the obligation of the family to put a marker there for the deceased. This is not the responsibility of the government or the Church.

To assume that foul play took place would be premature and unsupported.

There is no “discovery” of graves. All your Elders have knowledge of every grave. The band office has records from the Bishop’s office, the Church board and from cemetery workers who were in charge of digging graves and burials. The band office received a list of over 750 registered burials from the Bishop’s office.

Information is being put out there that doesn’t recognize these facts.

So please, people, do not make up stories about Residential school children put in unmarked graves. No such thing ever happened.

One of the first things I learned when I studied Ojibwa, always listen to the Elders, they can pass down through their stories, an immense knowledge of history.

Why is the Trudeau government jumping all over this story AGAIN? Is there an election coming soon? Will Justine explain to the First Nations people why he has been so lax in fulfilling his promise to finally supply the reserves with decent water systems? Zaamaajmo

The Pennsylvania agency in charge of elections has issued a new directive telling counties not to let outside parties access electronic voting systems or components of such systems, such as tabulators and ballot printers.

The directive from the Pennsylvania Department of State, released on July 9, states that county boards of elections “shall not” provide any access to third parties that are seeking to examine the systems or system components.

If the counties do allow access, the voting equipment that’s examined “will be considered no longer secure or reliable to use in subsequent elections,” and the department will withdraw its certification for the equipment.

Videos uploaded to social media appear to show demonstrations in a number of towns and cities, including the capital, Havana, on Sunday. Protesters, chanting in Spanish, said they “weren’t afraid” of the regime led by Miguel Diaz Canel, and said they wanted access to COVID-19 vaccines and an end to the regime.

  6. What Saint Thomas Aquinas Says About Mohammed and Islam

    By Saint Thomas Aquinas

“Mohammed seduced the people by promises of carnal pleasure to which the concupiscence of the flesh urges us. His teaching also contained precepts that were in conformity with his promises, and he gave free rein to carnal pleasure. In all this, as is not unexpected; he was obeyed by carnal men. As for proofs of the truth of his doctrine, he brought forward only such as could be grasped by the natural ability of anyone with a very modest wisdom. Indeed, the truths that he taught he mingled with many fables and with doctrines of the greatest falsity.

“He did not bring forth any signs produced in a supernatural way, which alone fittingly gives witness to divine inspiration; for a visible action that can be only divine reveals an invisibly inspired teacher of truth. On the contrary, Mohammed said that he was sent in the power of his arms – which are signs not lacking even to robbers and tyrants. What is more, no wise men, men trained in things divine and human, believed in him from the beginning. Those who believed in him were brutal men and desert wanderers, utterly ignorant of all divine teaching, through whose numbers Mohammed forced others to become his followers by the violence of his arms. Nor do divine pronouncements on the part of preceding prophets offer him any witness. On the contrary, he perverts almost all the testimony of the Old and the New Testaments by making them into a fabrication of his own, as can be seen by anyone who examines his law. It was, therefore, a shrewd decision on his part to forbid his followers to read the Old and New Testaments, lest these books convict him of falsity. It is thus clear that those who place faith in his words believe foolishly.”

In 1817, economist David Ricardo issued the same warning as Ludwig von Mises and Murray Rothbard (see Milton Friedman’s Flaw) gave years later. Ricardo acknowledged the usefulness of paper currency, but only as long as it is ties absolutely to gold.

“A currency is in its most perfect state when it consists wholly of paper money, but of paper money of an equal value with the gold which it professes to represent,” stated Ricardo; as he then sternly warns “that if there were perfect security that the power of issuing paper money would not be abused, it would be of no importance with respect to the riches of the country collectively, by whom it was issued. […] The danger, however, is that this power would be more likely to be abused, if in the hands of the Government, than in the hands of a banking company.”

Ricardo continues, “[I]f Government had the privilege of issuing money, that they would be too apt to consider present convenience, rather than security, and might, therefore, on the alleged grounds of expediency, be too much inclined to remove the checks, by which the amount of their issues was controlled.”[1] Ricardo accurately and astutely foretold exactly what governments are doing and have done for the past 100 years both in democratic and despotic nations.
