Reader’s Links for May 27, 2021

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

Republican lawmakers are demanding that top U.S. immunologist Dr. Anthony Fauci be fired from his post, with one taking a unique tack.

Rep. Warren Davidson (R-OH) on Tuesday proposed the “FIRED Act,” which stands for “Fauci Incompetence Requires Early Dismissal.”

“Dr. Fauci represents everything that President Eisenhower warned us about in his farewell address: the scientific-technical elite steering the country toward their own ends. Americans have had decades of Dr. Fauci’s leadership, and he publicly failed to respond appropriately to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is time for him to step aside so that new leadership can ‘follow the science’ and start reopening America,” Davidson said in a statement.

DeSantis: People Coming To FL ‘Overwhelmingly’ Registering As Republicans; Democrats Switching To GOP

Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis told Fox News during a town hall event Wednesday night that people who are moving to Florida are “overwhelmingly” registering as Republicans, including former Democrats who fled blue states.

“The media at the beginning of this said Florida’s bad and I think it’s because they want to damage Trump in Florida, they want to damage me. So, they just kept saying it was bad,” DeSantis said. “And even though the facts didn’t say it, like literally last April, they’re saying Florida is doing worse than New York. New York was like 10 times worse.”

“And so, I think what it did is the people that buy those phony narratives for these media, they probably aren’t coming to Florida. But most people see through it. But the people that see through it, they think like us. And so, I think a lot of these people are coming. I think they are registering as Republicans overwhelming,” he continued. “And I also have come across a lot of people who, quite frankly, were Democrats. The lockdowns turned them into Republicans.”

    • Quebec schools to bus students 12 and up to COVID-19 vaccine centres in June

MONTREAL – Quebec students between the ages of 12 and 17 will be bused to COVID-19 vaccine centres or given shots at school over two weeks in June, the province’s health minister announced Thursday.

Christian Dube unveiled the province’s plan to fully vaccinate young people with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine before school returns in the fall. Health Canada this month approved that vaccine for ages 12 and up, and Dube said the vaccine is highly effective in young people.

Under the plan, children 12 and up can also begin receiving COVID-19 vaccines with their families as of Friday at Montreal’s two drive-thru sites and make appointments at mass vaccine sites as of May 25. Evening and weekend slots will be set aside for families with children.

The school vaccine program will take place the weeks of June 7 and 14 and will follow a “hybrid” model, Dube said, that could include sending mobile vaccine clinics to schools or transporting students to nearby vaccine centres, depending on the region.

The government hopes to vaccinate everyone between the ages of 12 and 17 with one dose by June 23 and give them both doses by the time school returns at the end of the summer, Dube said.

Dube, who was accompanied by Education Minister Jean-Francois Roberge and Higher Education Minister Danielle McCann, stressed that vaccinating a large part of the population with two doses will be key to having a more normal school year.

“This is what will allow us to start the 2021-22 school year on the right foot for everyone, parents and students alike,” he said.

Dube said there are still 360,000 people in the 18 to 44 age group who have not made appointments to be vaccinated, and he urged them to sign up before the youth campaign gets underway.

McCann said it’s important that 75 per cent of the population gets vaccinated in order to allow students to return to campus in the fall.

“Our students have suffered from isolation a lot in the last year and a half, and this is the key,” she said. “Vaccination is the key to return on the campus in September.” However, Dube and McCann said it was not yet clear whether students would have to wear masks come September, saying the decision would be made at a later date.

Roberge, for his part, promised to release guidelines for graduation ceremonies in the coming days.

Children under the age of 14 need parental permission for a vaccine, while those 14 and over can decide on their own. There are about 530,000 people in the 12-to-17 age group in Quebec, representing about six per cent of the population.

Dube said the province hopes to finish giving second doses in August.

Earlier Thursday, Quebec reported 662 new cases of COVID-19 and eight more deaths attributed to the novel coronavirus, including one in the past 24 hours. Health officials said hospitalizations dropped by six, to 460, while the number of people in intensive care also fell by six, to 107.

The province said it administered 89,551 vaccine doses on Wednesday and has given at least one dose to 51.4 per cent of the population.

The Health Department also announced that people who have received a COVID-19 vaccine outside the province can register to receive an electronic proof of vaccination and make an appointment for a second dose if they are not yet fully vaccinated.

California will offer $116.5 million in cash and gift cards to residents who get COVID-19 vaccinations before June 15, the latest – and most lucrative – incentive by U.S. states desperate to persuade laggards and vaccine-skeptics to get the injection.

The move by Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is part of an effort to boost vaccinations as the state prepares to fully reopen its economy on June 15. Ten Californians who become inoculated before that date stand to win lottery-style prizes of $1.5 million apiece, while another 30 people will each win $50,000.

“Some Californians weren’t ready to get their COVID-19 vaccine on day one, and that’s OK,” said Dr. Tomas Aragon, director of the California Department of Public Health. “This program is designed to encourage those who need extra support to get vaccinated and help keep California safe.”

The incentives are being offered as Newsom is fighting off a recall campaign that has become a cause celebre among Republicans nationwide. It is one of many ways that Newsom plans to spend an unprecedented state budget surplus.

“Getting every eligible Californian vaccinated is how we bring our state roaring back from this pandemic,” Newsom said.

Across the United States, states and private organizations have offered incentives to persuade people to become inoculated against COVID-19, which has killed nearly 3.7 people worldwide.

The incentives range from free baseball tickets and beer, to college scholarships and cash.

On Wednesday, Ohio awarded $1 million to Abbigail Bugenske, a Silverton woman who entered the state’s Vax-a-Million drawing. Joseph Costello, a high school student from Inglewood, won a full-ride scholarship, including tuition, books and room and board at an Ohio public university or college.

abc – California launches ‘Vax for the Win’ incentive program to get more people vaccinated

ACRAMENTO, Calif. — California plans to hand out millions of dollars in prizes to residents who have gotten or plan to get their COVID-19 vaccination starting Thursday, May 27.

The “Vax for the Win” vaccine incentive program is made possible with $116.5 million from Gov. Gavin Newsom’s $110 Billion California Comeback Plan. Ten people who are at least partially vaccinated will split a $15 million grand prize; 30 people who are at least partially vaccinated will receive $50,000 prizes – handed out Friday, June 4 and Friday, June 11 as part of “$50,000 Friday” – and the next two million vaccinated Californians (starting Thursday, May 27) will receive prizes in the form of a $50 gift card.

All residents age 12 and up are eligible for the contest.

“Getting every eligible Californian vaccinated is how we bring our state roaring back from this pandemic,” Newsom said in a press release about the Vax for the Win program.

“California has already made incredible progress in the fight against COVID-19, with the lowest case rates in the country while administering millions more vaccines than any other state. But we aren’t stopping there, we’re doing everything it takes to get Californians vaccinated as we approach June 15 to help us fully reopen safely,” Newsom added in the release.

The program is designed to “give an extra nudge” to residents who are on the fence about getting vaccinated, program officials said, while also those who have already gotten their COVID shot.

According to the rules and regulations of the program, winners must complete their vaccination in order to claim their prize. Any winners under the age of 18 will have their prize put in a savings account for them until they turn 18.

If you are one of the two million newly-vaccinated winners, you will receive a text message with an electronic prepaid card redemption code sent to your mobile phone or email address 7-10 days after you become fully vaccinated. Officials say an incentive card will be held for those who start their vaccination at the launch of the program.

Those who do not have a mobile phone or email address can receive a physical card by calling 1-833-993-3873. And residents who do not have a permanent address can also call to coordinate delivery.

The “Vax for the Win” vaccine incentive program is made possible with $116.5 million from Gov. Gavin Newsom’s $110 Billion California Comeback Plan.

David Chipman, a longtime gun control lobbyist with more than two decades experience working for ATF, faced questions from several Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans on his views on guns, admitting to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) that he supports a ban on AR-15 rifles and would enforce such a ban if Congress were to legislate one.

The largest parliamentary group in the German Bundestag, the faction of the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), has approved a wide-ranging strategy to contain the spread of political Islam in Germany.

The plan, outlined in a new policy paper, “Preserving Free Society, Promoting Social Cohesion, Fighting Political Islamism,” warns that a growing number of areas in Germany, where German law is overruled by Sharia law, are in danger of becoming “parallel societies.”

The document also warns that many mosques and Islamic associations in Germany are controlled by foreign governments and that they are producing a generation of German jihadists who extol martyrdom and threaten Germany’s liberal democratic order.

  17. the guardian – Turkey seeks arrest of mafia boss who alleges crimes by Erdogan allies

Videos by convicted criminal Sedat Peker accusing president’s allies of grave offences get millions of views

Turkey has issued a new arrest warrant for a convicted crime boss who fled prosecution abroad and then began publishing videos that allege grave crimes committed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s allies.

The chief public prosecutor’s office in Ankara issued the arrest warrant for Sedat Peker on Wednesday as he prepared to release the eighth in a series of YouTube videos that have each received millions of views.

Anadolu, the state news agency, said Peker was now also suspected of involvement in a terror group led by a US-based Muslim preacher whom Turkey blames for a failed coup against Erdogan in 2016.

The accusations Peker has levelled at Erdogan’s allies, including a former prime minister, top officials and their relatives, range from corruption and drug trafficking to rape and assassinations.

The videos have focused heavily on the interior minister, Süleyman Soylu, whom Peker alleges had offered him protection and then tipped him off about impending charges, allowing him to flee abroad.

Peker, 49, began recording his videos after police raided his home in Turkey in April and allegedly mistreated his family.

He says he now lives in the United Arab Emirates.

None of the allegations have been proven and those involved have said they are innocent.

But the political scandal sparked by the videos comes at an inopportune time for Erdogan, who is losing ground in opinion polls because of a depreciating currency and runaway inflation.

Addressing the allegations directly for the first time on Wednesday, Erdogan vowed to stand “side by side” with Soylu, a nationalist who is seen as one of Turkey’s most popular and powerful officials.

“We have crushed criminal organisations one by one for 19 years,” said Erdogan.

“We follow criminal gang members wherever they may flee to in the world.”

Arrest warrant issued for criminal gang leader Peker

An arrest warrant was issued on Thursday for criminal gang leader Sedat Peker following a request from the Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu last week filed a criminal complaint against Peker, calling for an inquiry into the allegations made by the media-savvy figure who has been convicted of mob-related crimes in the past.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday also pledged to fight organized crime syndicates, adamant that he would not let mob bosses threaten the atmosphere of peace and security in the country.

“Turkey will thwart these plots and will bring organized crime bosses to Turkey to face justice,” the president said, in reference to a series of statements made by fugitive mob boss Peker, who has been releasing a series of videos in which he speaks about his organization and makes allegations about Turkish officials.

Peker, 49, rose to prominence in the 1990s as an underworld figure. He fled from Romania to Turkey in 1998 when two men, who were allegedly members of his gang, were convicted of murder. He was arrested in Turkey in late 1998 but released in 1999. He was once again sentenced for mob-related crimes in 2007.

Peker’s name came up again in the infamous Ergenekon trials when prosecutors and police officers linked to the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) imprisoned the group’s critics in sham trials. He was sentenced to 10 years but was released in 2014. In recent years, he became a prominent social media personality, gaining a sizeable following.

He initially fled to Montenegro but ended up traveling back and forth between Kosovo, North Macedonia and Montenegro. He then fled to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as the country does not have an extradition treaty with Ankara.

    – GPs ‘are swamped by patients tsunami’: Health chiefs hold crisis talks with Matt Hancock as doctors warn they can’t cope with huge demand following Covid pandemic –

In the first year of the pandemic, 31million fewer GP appointments were carried out than normal as patients put off seeing doctors over fears of catching Covid or burdening the NHS.

And since restrictions started to be eased on March 8, there has been a huge surge. That month there were 28.5million appointments at GP surgeries. Doctors saw the most patients since figures were first recorded.

Just 54 per cent of appointments are now in person, compared with 79 per cent two years ago. Campaigners say it is becoming harder to see a GP face to face, with older patients in particular missing out.

He said that three decades ago as a GP he would see 20 patients a day. Now GPs are expected to see up to three times that number.

Professor Marshall told BBC Radio 4: ‘If I was a patient, I wouldn’t want to see my GP at the end of a 12-hour day and be the 50th or 60th patient they’ve seen.
