Reader’s Links for January 11, 2021

(Sorry I’m late. I sometimes forget when I run out of these preset posts)

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

Claiming that the National Health service is at breaking point, the government is said to be considering implementing stricter rules, including compulsory mask-wearing outdoors, and banning so called ‘extended bubbles’, where people are allowed to meet one person from another household.

Most chilling, however, is the revelation that cabinet ministers have privately debated preventing people from talking to each other in the street and in supermarkets, and even preventing people from leaving home more than once per week, and introducing curfews.

A federal prosecutor, questioned about President Trump’s role in the Capitol riots, refused to rule out criminal charges.

Michael Sherwin, the acting U.S. Attorney for D.C., repeatedly assured reporters in a press call that he would investigate and charge “all actors” involved in Wednesday’s riot.

Journalists pressed Sherwin about Trump’s speech and what motivating factor it may have been in inciting supporters to storm the Capitol.

As we have seen recently in virtually all of Joe Biden’s cabinet appointments, Democrats are bullish about “firsts.” They are about to achieve two more by (1) impeaching Donald Trump for the second time and (2) in the shortest time span in U.S. history. If they draft articles of impeachment tomorrow, as they plan, they will have eight days to complete the task, assuming they want a Senate vote before the inauguration. (RELATED: Mad rush to remove Trump just days before his term ends would damage Constitution)

They could of course simply wait a few more days until the president’s term ends, but they have persuaded themselves that that’s too dangerous:

At least that is what they are claiming. In reality, the Democratic leadership wants one last chance at ejecting the president after having failed at it twice — once with the Russian collusion fantasy, again with the first impeachment.

President-elect Joe Biden on Thursday speculated that Capitol police went easier on a mob of protesters who breached the Capitol building because they were Trump supporters and not Black Lives Matter activists.

Biden failed to mention in his comparison that a Trump supporter, Ashli Babbit, was fatally shot inside the Capitol building by a police officer.

Sixty-eight people were also arrested during the onslaught, according to Washington, D.C. police.

Trending: Trump’s operational finale won’t be the 2020 election intel assessment

“No one can tell me that if it had been a group of Black Lives Matter protesting yesterday, there wouldn’t — they wouldn’t have been treated very, very differently than the mob of thugs that stormed the Capitol,” Biden said at a press conference.

“We all know that’s true, and it is unacceptable.

No idea about this. Just passing it on. It is supposedly the reason for the Democrat panic attempt at impeachment:

There were several Special Operations being ran all at the same time.

    Those were the white hats.
They went in and seized multiple pieces of evidence, including Nancy Pelosi’s laptop.
Listen to him break it all down.

The former Lt General who served under U.S. presidents in the past says Pelosi is “frantic” because she knows her laptop went missing during the chaos.
“This is high treason,” McInerney explained. “They are terrified because they [special forces] have that data.”
“There was some people in there that were special forces mixed with Anifa and they took her laptop and they have the data.”
The former Lt General claims the missing laptop is the reason that Pelosi wants to impeach President Donald Trump in such an expeditious push using the 25th Amendment.

    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/turkish-televangelist-life-term-sex-abuse-offenses-75176405

“A Turkish court on Monday sentenced a controversial Muslim televangelist and cult leader to life in prison, finding him guilty of forming a criminal gang and sexual abuse of minors, among several other offenses.

Adnan Oktar, who was known for holding theological discussions surrounded by glamorous women on his private television channel, was convicted of 10 separate charges, including leading a criminal gang, engaging in political and military espionage, sexual abuse of minors, rape, blackmail and causing torment, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported. He was handed down a total of 1,075 years in prison.

The charges also included aiding the network led by U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Turkey accuses of masterminding a failed coup attempt in 2016.

Thirteen of Oktar’s associates were also given lengthy sentences on similar charges, Anadolu reported.

The 64-year-old, who has denied the accusations, is expected to appeal the verdict. He has maintained that he was the victim of a plot.

Oktar was arrested in 2018 along with dozens of his followers in police raids on his properties in Istanbul and other cities as part of an investigation into his group. The arrests came after Turkey’s media watchdog imposed fines on Oktar’s TV channel and suspended broadcasts of his shows where he was surrounded by women who had undergone cosmetic surgery and were known as “kittens.”

The televangelist — who uses the pen name Harun Yahya — is also known for a series of books he has authored promoting creationism against Darwin’s theory of evolution.”

    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/libyan-man-sentenced-life-deadly-uk-park-stabbings-75179258

“A Libyan man who stabbed three friends to death as they sat in an English city park on a summer evening was sentenced Monday to life in prison with no chance of parole.

Judge Nigel Sweeney said Khairi Saadallah should be given a rare whole-life prison term for the “ruthless and brutal” attack. He said it was “a rare and exceptional case in which just punishment requires you must be kept in prison for the rest of your life.”

Saadallah, 26, had pleaded guilty to three counts of murder and three of attempted murder for the June 20 violence in Reading, 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of London.

Friends James Furlong, 36, David Wails, 49, and Joseph Ritchie-Bennett, 39, were enjoying a warm Saturday evening in Reading’s Forbury Gardens park when they were stabbed. Each died from a single stab wound in an attack that lasted barely a minute. Three other men were injured.

“His attack on them was so swift, ruthless and brutal that none of them had any chance to react, let alone to defend themselves,” the judge said during the sentencing hearing at London’s Central Criminal Court.

Although he admitted the killings, Saadallah denied being motivated by an ideological cause or doing significant planning for the attack. The defendant, who came to Britain in 2012, had convictions for offenses including theft and assault.

But police said the stabbings were terrorism. Prosecutors said Saadallah, an asylum-seeker who was living in Reading, stabbed the victims while shouting “Allahu akbar” — the Arabic phrase for “God is great.”

The judge said the defendant “was seeking to advance a political, religious or ideological cause” and had done substantial planning. He rejected the argument that Saadallah was suffering a mental illness at the time of the attack.

Detective Chief Superintendent Kath Barnes, head of Counter Terrorism Policing South East, said after the sentencing that Saadallah was “a committed jihadist and was intent on killing as many people as he could on that sunny summer’s evening in June.”

“The horrors of this incident took just a single minute to unfold. … In that tiny timeframe, he changed the lives of all those involved forever,” she said.”

  17. House Democrats’ quick 25th Amendment push urging Pence to remove Trump blocked by Republicans
Democrats said they would introduce an article of impeachment against Trump Monday

House Republicans blocked quick consideration of a bill calling on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove President Trump from office amid fallout from last week’s Capitol riot.

Democrats asked for consideration of a bill calling on Pence to mobilize the 25th Amendment, but Rep. Alex Mooney, R-W.V., objected Monday.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said she would bring the bill to the floor if the unanimous consent request was blocked.

“The President represents an imminent threat to our Constitution, our Country and the American people, and he must be removed from office immediately,” Pelosi said in a statement Monday, noting that House Republicans rejected the legislation, and claimed they were “enabling the President’s unhinged, unstable and deranged acts of sedition to continue.”

“Their complicity endangers America, erodes our Democracy, and it must end,” she said.

Pelosi announced that the House would take up the legislation, and said House Democrats are “further calling on the Vice President to respond within 24 hours after passage.”

  18. Pakistan military: Fence bordering Afghanistan nearly done (abcnews, Jan 11, 2021)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/pakistan-military-fence-bordering-afghanistan-75180254

“Pakistan’s military said Monday it has nearly completed a fence along the border with Afghanistan, which Islamabad says is necessary to prevent militant attacks from both sides.

Maj. Gen. Babar Iftikhar, spokesman for Pakistan’s armed forces, said more than 83% of the fence along the 2,611-kilometer (1,622-mile) border with Afghanistan — known as the Durand Line — has been completed.

The remaining work at the country’s western border was expected to be completed by the middle of the year, he told a televised news conference in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

Pakistan says it is erecting the fence to stop the movement of Pakistani Taliban, remnants of al-Qaida, and other foreign militants who prior to the fence’s construction could easily launch cross-border attacks on both sides. It was easier for militants to return to Afghanistan after launching attacks inside Pakistan, Pakistani officials say.

Authorities said fencing at the border with Iran in southwestern Baluchistan province is also underway to check smuggling and militant activity.

Afghanistan has never recognized the border, which runs through the Pashtun heartland, diluting the power of Afghanistan’s largest ethnic group on both sides.

Pakistan says it is trying to better manage the border so that militants cannot launch cross-border attacks in either country and Iftikhar said that effort has already played a key role in reducing militant attacks inside Pakistan.

He said Pakistani security forces have arrested or killed 1,100 al-Qaida militants since Pakistan joined the war on terror following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in the United States. Some 83,000 Pakistanis, mostly civilians but also security forces, have died in the fighting, he said.

“We are not out of the woods yet but we are almost there,” Iftikhar said, indicating there are still militants to fight. However, he claimed there were now no organized militant groups, including the Islamic State group, in Pakistan.

The IS, however, in recent years has claimed responsibility for several deadly attacks inside Pakistan, including the Jan. 3 killing of 11 coal miners from the minority Shiite Hazara community in southwestern Baluchistan province. Iftikhar, however, said there were only remnants of militant groups left in Pakistan, including IS.

Pakistan’s former tribal regions, including North and South Waziristan, were considered a “no-go area” for ordinary Pakistanis and even military personnel because of the strong presence of militants, including Pakistani Taliban, al-Qaida and other outlawed domestic Sunni militant groups prior to 2013, That’s when Pakistan launched military operations there, clearing out militants but also displacing about 1 million people.

Pakistan and Afghanistan often accuse each other of turning a blind eye to Islamic militants operating along the porous frontier. Iftikhar said Pakistan is also fencing the border with Iran, a project he said is 37% complete.”

Following what millions of voters argue was a stolen election that put Joe Biden in the White House, Democrats are now poised to solidify their grip on power in America’s capital. Pelosi, the lead Democrat in the U.S. House, has announced her commitment to passing H.R.1, which is known as the For the People Act of 2019.

The measure passed in the House in early March 2019, but has since languished in the Senate. That’s less likely to happen this time around in the Senate with a 50-50 split and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris holding the tie-breaking vote.

Rob Chambers, vice president of AFA Action, explains that H.R.1 – if passed – would federalize and micromanage elections at the state level.

“What Nancy Pelosi is wanting to do is to pass federal legislation that will come in and micromanage state election procedures,” he shares. “She wants to seize the authority of the states to regulate voter registration, opening up early voting, automatic voter registration, same-day registration, online registration – and who knows? It may even be online voting.”

  23. U.S. toughens ban on ‘abhorrent’ female genital mutilation

President Donald Trump has signed a law which says the United States should lead the way in banning FGM
    By Emma Batha

Jan 7 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – The United States has toughened its ban on the “abhorrent practice” of female genital mutilation in a move campaigners hope will bolster efforts to end an ancient rite forced on millions of girls worldwide.

The United States had already outlawed the widely condemned ritual, which dates back more than 2,000 years, but its first ban hit an unexpected legal roadblock so it moved to tighten the wording this week.

“This is fantastic news. I’m ecstatic,” Mariya Taher of the US End FGM/C Network, which advised on the legislation, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation on Thursday.

“This is really important for protecting future generations of girls in the U.S. from this very harmful practice, and I hope it will motivate other countries to pass their own laws.”

The law signed by President Donald Trump on Tuesday says the United States should lead the way, calling FGM “a form of child abuse, gender discrimination, and violence”.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates more than half a million girls and women in the United States have undergone or are at risk of FGM, which involves the partial or complete removal of the external female genitalia.

Globally, more than 200 million girls and women have been cut, often in the name of religion or tradition, according to U.N. data.

    RIPPLE EFFECT?

The “STOP FGM Act of 2020” will empower federal authorities to prosecute people who carry out or conspire to carry out FGM and increase the maximum prison sentence from five to 10 years.

Government agencies will also have to report to Congress on the estimated number of women and girls who have undergone or are at risk of FGM, and on efforts to prevent the practice.

Although Congress passed a law against FGM in 1996, attempts to prosecute a doctor accused of cutting nine girls in Detroit collapsed in 2018 when a Michigan federal judge ruled the law was unconstitutional and said it was a state issue.

The case was the first attempt to prosecute FGM under the federal law.

The new law closes the loophole and extends the scope of punishable offences relating to FGM.

FGM, which can cause a host of serious physical and mental health problems, is most commonly associated with a swathe of countries in Africa.

But it is also practiced in parts of the Middle East and Asia, and by diaspora communities in the United States, Europe and elsewhere.

Countries lacking laws include Sierra Leone, Liberia, Somalia, Mali and India.

Divya Srinivasan, a legal expert on FGM with global rights group Equality Now, said the new law would make it easer for the U.S. government to persuade other countries to act.

“Ending FGM is part of U.S. foreign policy so it’s important for their credibility that they have a strong law themselves,” she added.

Campaigners urged the 11 U.S. states that still do not have their own laws against FGM to swiftly enact similar legislation.

Steven Sund, outgoing chief of the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP), says House and Senate security officials rejected or slow-walked multiple requests by the agency to call in the National Guard for assistance on Jan. 6.

Sund told The Washington Post in an interview published on Jan. 10 that, in the days leading up to the Jan. 6 incident in which protesters and rioters breached the Capitol building and committed acts of violence, he had asked House and Senate security officials to let him request that the D.C. National Guard be put on standby.

He told the outlet that the officials denied or postponed his requests six times.

House Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Irving said he wasn’t comfortable with how a declaration of an emergency would be received ahead of the protests, said Sund, who resigned following the Capitol breach.

Report: Dems working to classify MAGA rallies as ‘domestic terrorist activity’

    Oklahoma protester

It seems the Nazification of America is proceeding as planned. On Sunday, Paul Sperry, a former D.C. bureau chief for Investor’s Business Daily, issued a tweet claiming that Democrats are working on legislation to classify “Make America Great Again” rallies “domestic terrorist activity.” Presumably the move arises out of last Wednesday’s attack on the Capitol by a comparatively tiny fraction of the estimated million protesters who turned out in D.C. in support of Donald Trump.

Democrats are viewing the storming of the Capitol as an unprecedented act of violence despite a very clear precedent in the six months of non-stop riots following the death of George Floyd.

The Left was slow even to acknowledge the protests by Antifa and Black Lives Matter, let alone admit they were violent. In one of the most telling moments of leftist hypocrisy, a newscaster covering one of the demonstrations standing before a backdrop of a community engulfed in flame reported that the protests were “mostly peaceful.”

The FBI is warning that armed protests are being planned at state capitols across the country in advance of Inauguration Day.
    What are the details?

In a Monday bulletin obtained by ABC News, the federal law enforcement agency stated: “Armed protests are being planned at all 50 state capitols from 16 January through at least 20 January, and at the US Capitol from 17 January through 20 January.”

The news was first reported by ABC News investigative reporter Aaron Katersky, who said that in recent days the FBI has received the information about an undisclosed group calling for the “storming” of state, local and federal government buildings in the event President Trump is removed from office before Jan. 20.

In a follow-up tweet, Katersky noted that the FBI has also “received information about an identified armed group intending to travel to Washington, DC on 16 January.”

  29. It’s Back: The Political Struggle for Control of Banks’ Loan Taps | RealClearInvestigations
By John Hirschauer, RealClear InvestigationsJanuary 10, 2021
    10-12 minutes

In its final days, the Trump administration is seeking to disrupt the way progressive activists increasingly impose their will on big business: through banks controlling the loan lifelines to the economy.

A regulation that could be approved this week aims to prevent lenders from blackballing businesses in industries opposed by the left by requiring banks to demonstrate that their loan decisions are “based on quantitative, impartial risk-based standards,” rather than political or reputational concerns.

    Terrifying times lie ahead.

I’ve been ranting for years about the perfidy of the left. At times I’ve been accused of exaggerating. On rare occasions I feared – or hoped? – that perhaps I was exaggerating. In fact I can now see that these people are worse than I ever imagined. Worse than most of us ever imagined.

Worse, even, than Donald Trump, with all his insight, imagined.

He went into office determined to clean up the swamp. He was tireless. But not tireless enough. No mere mortal could have been tireless enough. Trump had denounced the swamp in apocalyptic terms, but it proved to be even deeper and more extensive than he knew. It reached into the upper echelons of the intelligence community and the military, into cabinet departments and the judiciary.

  31. VIDEO: Antifa mob attacks Trump supporters in San Diego

But Joe Biden said ‘Antifa’s an idea’

An unlawful assembly was declared in San Diego on Saturday after violence sprang up when a mob of Antifa and Black Lives Matter protesters clashed with Trump supporters during the group’s “Patriot March” in southern California.

POLL: Do you have hope for 2021?

KSWB-TV photojournalist Paul Makarushka captured the moment when a horde of apparent Antifa members, at least one wielding a baseball bat, converged upon a handful of conservatives.

“[T]rump supporters clash with BLM and antifa on the boardwalk in PB,” Makarushka tweeted. “Heavy police presence some fights and scuffles. Pepper spray etc (not from pd).”

  32. ISWAP Jihadists Kill 13 Soldiers in Northeast Nigeria
    https://www.thedefensepost.com/2021/01/11/iswap-kills-13-soldiers-nigeria/

“Thirteen soldiers have died in an ambush by jihadist fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) group in volatile northeastern Nigeria, two army sources told AFP on Monday.

Heavy gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades hit a military convoy in Gazagana village, 30 kilometers (18 miles) from Yobe state capital Damaturu on Saturday.

“We lost 13 soldiers in this ambush and several were injured,” an officer said.

The convoy was headed for a military base at Buni Yadi, another 20 kilometers from Damaturu, said the second army source, who gave the same death toll. “It was a fierce battle and the terrorists also suffered casualties,” he said, without giving a figure.

The ISWAP group carries out regular attacks in Buni Yadi region on soldiers and travelers, with the violence spilling over into Borno state.

Since 2009, the jihadist campaign in northeast Nigeria has focused on Borno where the Boko Haram group is also active.

ISWAP split from Boko Haram in 2016 and rose to become a dominant group.

The violence has spread into neighboring Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, prompting a regional military coalition to fight the militants.

At least 36,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which has displaced about two million from their homes since 2009.”

  33. How Qaeda-Friendly GSIM Became the Sahel’s Leading Jihadists
    https://www.thedefensepost.com/2021/01/11/gsim-leading-jihadists-sahel/

“A group of jihadists close to Al-Qaeda has emerged as the West’s most formidable enemy in the Sahel, taking over from the Islamic State as the region’s major threat.

The Group to Support Islam and Muslims, also known by its Arabic acronym JNIM, is a sworn enemy of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS).

It made headlines most recently when it killed five soldiers of the French-led Barkhane force in two attacks within a week.

The killings are the latest example of GSIM’s rise to a position that experts say make it an unavoidable partner in — or the biggest obstacle to — any peace negotiations for the restive Sahel region, the arid expanse south of the Sahara that is roughly the size of Europe.

    ‘Gained in Influence’
“It has gained in influence and territorial power these past few months,” a high-ranking French officer told AFP on condition of anonymity, adding that GSIM had become both “more combative and better structured.”

This is a far cry from the situation only a year ago, when France and the G5 Sahel force, which groups Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, and Burkina Faso, named ISGS their number one enemy in the region.

But after successful French-led campaigns against the Islamic State offshoot, ISGS activity has been much reduced, making GSIM the new group to beat.

“Today it is the worst enemy for Barkhane, international forces, and Mali,” General Marc Conruyt, the commander of Barkhane, France’s 5,100-member counterterrorism force, told parliament in November.

Created in 2017 via the merger of several jihadist groups under the leadership of veteran Tuareg militant Iyad Ag Ghaly, GSIM has become one of Al-Qaeda’s most active affiliates anywhere.

“Based on what he has accomplished so far, continuing to expand and to exist despite the aggressive counterterrorism operations, he is among the most respected Al-Qaeda leaders currently,” Rida Lyammouri, an associate fellow at the Clingendael Institute in the Netherlands, said of Ag Ghaly.

His accomplishments have even allowed his group to overtake al-Qaeda’s original local representation, Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), said Djallil Lounnas, a researcher at the Al Akhawayn university in Morocco.

When France claimed the killing of longstanding AQIM boss Abdelmalek Droukdel last June, “this confirmed the definitive rise of GSIM over Al-Qaeda in the region,” he said.”

“The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) is taking the initial steps to design another heavy-water reactor similar to an existing one in the city of Arak, a lawmaker said.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Abolfazl Amouei, the spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said the AEOI’s spokesman had announced the matter in a meeting with members of the committee also attended by the Iranian deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, Mohsen Baharvand.

Amouei said the implementation of a new law called the “Strategic Action Plan to Lift Sanctions and Safeguard Interests of Iranian People” was examined during the meeting, Press TV reported…”
