This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

    “CORONAVIRUS lockdown in London could drag on for months if infection rates peak in different areas at different times, MPs have warned.

    London Mayor Sadiq Khan insists the capital should fight the virus “as one city” despite some boroughs reporting much lower infection levels than others. But some city MPs have questioned whether all eight million Londoners should be subject to the same rules if health chiefs decide social lockdown restrictions nee to be imposed to prevent a second wave engulfing the capital.

    They fear the introduction of city-wide restrictions would see millions of Londoners subjected to more curbs than necessary and warned such a strategy could prolong the duration of lockdown for everyone.

    Latest COVID-19 figures for the capital show boroughs to the east of the city suffering the highest caseloads with Redbridge and Barking & Dagenham having more than 50 new cases in a week per 100,000 population – a level seen by health leaders as a trigger for further interventions to control the virus.

    In some London boroughs, the levels are less than half as high with Bromley reporting just under 20 cases per 100,000 people, the same as Kensington & Chelsea.

    Harrow East MP Bob Blackman warned a London-wide approach could mean restrictions lasting for longer because different areas may “peak” at different times.

    He said: “What happens if east London has a high rate of infections one month, and west London has a high rate a month later when east London has come down?

    “If you lock down the entire capital then it could stay locked down for longer than necessary.

    “It does not make sense to treat a city of eight million people as being all the same, or to restrict the movements of all of those people.

    “It should be done on a borough by borough basis, otherwise people are naturally going to say ‘hang on, this does not make sense’.”

    Orpington MP Gareth Bacon, said: “London is not all the same.

    My constituency is more akin to Kent, than it is to central London.

    “Cases are going up in our borough, Bromley, but not enough to justify restrictions at the moment.

    “I do not think it would be received favourably here if we were put into restrictions because of rises in the centre of the city.”

    City Hall and the London Councils group of borough leaders think a borough-level approach is wrong because many Londoners live, work and enjoy leisure in different boroughs, creating confusion if the rules change.

    A spokesman for Mayor Sadiq Khan said there was expert agreement that the virus should be tackled on a London-wide basis.

    The spokesman said: “The Mayor, London leaders and public health advisers met to discuss the spread of coronavirus in the capital, with some boroughs seeing much higher incidences of the virus than others.

    “The meeting agreed to monitor the situation very closely over the coming days and to continue to move forward and tackle the virus together as one city.”

    Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey, whose Kingston & Surbiton constituency is in an area of low infections, backed Mr Khan’s stance.

    He said: “I’m very sceptical that local lockdowns borough by borough can work, given how London works.

    “And, sadly, even boroughs with lower rates are seeing upward trends, including across south west London.

    “If the virus gets out of control again, we could be in serious trouble.””

      “STRINGENT restrictions have been imposed in Tower Hamlets in London’s East End in the face of a rapid rise in the number of coronavirus cases – with Mayor John Biggs warning it was now a “matter of life and death”.

      Residents of the borough have been told to avoid mixing with other households “unless absolutely necessary” in a bid to slow the spread of COVID-19. Alarming Government data suggests 143 new infections were recorded in the seven days up to September 28, equating to 44 cases per 100,000 people. This marked a significant increase compared with the previous week, when the figure was 38.5 cases per 100,000.

      There have now been a total of 1,438 cases of COVID-19 recorded in the borough between March 4 to September 26, which has a population of 308,650, according to Tower Hamlets Council’s website.

      In an open letter to residents also published on the council’s website, Mr Biggs said: “Despite a fall over the summer, we are seeing cases of COVID-19 rise and we need to accept that the situation is once again worsening.

      “Tower Hamlets now has one of the highest levels of COVID-19 in London.

      “As a second rise in infections hits us, we must take all steps necessary to limit the spread of the virus and protect those most at risk.”

      Mr Biggs pointed out that the virus had a higher impact on older and medically vulnerable people, as well people from ethnic minorities.

      In a likely reference to the popularity of nightspots in fashionable Shoreditch and Brick Lane, he also emphasised the fact that young people were catching the disease in increasing numbers.

      He added: “The diverse communities in Tower Hamlets are what make our borough great, but it also means Tower Hamlets is at greater risk.

      “Every single one of us must play our part to protect our communities and stop the virus spreading.

      “With this in mind, now is the time we must take further action.

      “I am clear that the current national rules are a minimum and my advice to you all is to do everything in your power to protect each other.

      “Our individual actions have consequences for us all.

      “In addition to the national measures, we’re asking residents to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 locally.

      “Many cases of COVID-19 in Tower Hamlets are as a result of people visiting other households, so we are asking residents to avoid this unless absolutely necessary.

      “This really is a matter of life and death and we need to act urgently.”

      Mr Biggs warned the next few months would be “very challenging”.

      He added: “Without a vaccine or more effective treatment, our primary weapon against the virus is responsible behaviour.

      “Measures to curb the spread of the virus will only work if people follow them.”

      Deputy mayor of Tower Hamlets Rachel Blake told the Evening Standard: “We have to be really open with people about how serious this is.

      “We’ve got the fourth highest infection rate in London.”

      She denied the borough was entering a local lockdown – but added: “Our evidence shows that households visits is a high area of transmission and that is why we are asking people to avoid visiting other households.””

    Mike Haines – who has visited schools to discuss fighting terrorism since his brother was captured and beheaded in 2014 after being held by a four-man terrorist group of Britons dubbed The Beatles – said the situation was grave. Mr Haines said: “The situation just before lockdown was grave, and it’s only got worse. There has been more online grooming of youths for all extremism.

    “Teachers and police have told me that cases of online grooming – and I use that word because there are so many similarities between the steps extremists take and the steps paedophiles take – have gone up.

    “People are getting pushed to the fringes of society. They have a feeling that they don’t belong.

    “So I believe we are now at a crossroads.”

    Mr Haines, 54, from Dundee, was speaking after legal developments meant the two British Islamic State jihadis suspected of killing his brother and several other hostages edged closer to going on trial.

    Alexanda Kotey and El Shafee Elsheikh, both from west London, have been in US custody for months over the deaths, including that of father-of-two Mr Haines, from Perth.

    Mohammed Emwazi, the group’s ringleader, known as Jihadi John, was killed in a US air strike in 2015, while Aine Davis is in jail in Turkey.

    Mr Haines, who runs education charity Global Acts Of Unity, said: “The voices of hatred are loud and in all sorts of places. The thing that the average person in the street can do is think about how their own actions impact on others.

    “Kindness is the greatest force in this world – kindness to your neighbours, the homeless man on the street, the migrants, the people with Covid…everyone.”

    Mr Haines is due to be featured in BBC Two series In The Face Of Terror, which begins on Monday night with a focus on the Beatles terror cell.”

    “The UK deported just one out of 30 failed asylum seekers scheduled on a flight to France after the rest had lodged legal challenges to their removal.

    One Sudanese man was returned to Paris under current EU asylum rules. The 29 others were taken off of the airplane and had their cases “rescheduled”, including six who claimed they were victims of slavery and 18 who made claims that they should be allowed to stay in Britain under the human rights act, according to information seen by The Times.

    Their cases come after the Home Office complained earlier this year that “activist lawyers” were behind several other failed returns of bogus refugees. Home Secretary Priti Patel is said to be writing new asylum laws which would stop migrants drawing out the asylum process by continually filing new claims after failed ones. They will come into effect next year after the UK leaves the EU transition period.

    The Home Office also admitted that just 231 illegals had been deported since January 2019; deportations since the pandemic have numbered in the “tens”, they said.

    The newspaper also reports that the number of asylum seekers being housed in 91 hotels across the country had risen to 9,500 — an increase of one-fifth in a single month. The government has adapted two former military bases into open migrant camps for around a combined 650 asylum seekers.

    The figures were revealed after multiple reports in the media in recent days that the Home Office is considering options to deter boat migrants crossing the English Channel and how to manage the influx. Such ideas reportedly being seriously considered are housing them in retired ferries off of the British coast. Other more ambitious ideas such as sending them to remote islands in the Atlantic or holding them in third countries like Papua New Guinea had reportedly been ruled out.

    A source speaking to The Times on Friday said that the leaks of some of the more unorthodox ideas were a means to discredit the home secretary and any serious plans she may have for dealing with illegal mass migration.

    A confidant of Home Secretary Patel and fellow Tory MP told the newspaper of record: “It’s pretty obvious what’s happened here. By coming up with bizarre and unworkable policy options, then leaking them, the Foreign Office is attempting to discredit any and every solution to a problem which my constituents write to me about daily.

    “The Foreign Office’s idea of a crisis is receiving a strongly worded letter from a wacky UN special rapporteur.”

    Some 7,000 illegal aliens have landed on British shores by boat since the beginning of this year, with September’s arrivals alone eclipsing the numbers for the whole of 2019. However, despite the rising numbers, the UN insists that the massive influx of migrants crossing the English Channel is “not a threat” to the UK.

    In August, the globalist organisation had also claimed that the numbers arriving illegally in the UK were “low and manageable”, and condemned plans to push back the boats to France.

    Ms Patel has reportedly recently met with former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who is the UK’s new trade advisor. During his tenure as leader of Australia, Mr Abbott’s Operation Sovereign Borders had been successful at stopping illegal boat migration, by forcing the boats to turn back and implementing measures whereby would-be refugees would have their applications processed in third countries.

    Mr Abbott had said in June that unless the UK gets tough and pushes back the boats, it will face its own migrant crisis.”

    “A European Commission report on staff diversity within European Union institutions has accused the EU of being too white and not having enough representation from minority communities.

    The report has stated that while ethnic minorities make up at least 10 per cent of the population in the European Union, the number of ethnic minorities within EU institutions is far lower.

    As a result, the European Commission has vowed to launch an investigation into the ethnic profiles of its own employees to set possible quotas for its recruitment policy, Le Figaro reports.

    Monica Silvana, an MEP for the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) who heads the European Parliament’s Anti-Racism Intergroup, said a potential change in recruiting would face difficulties.

    “It is very difficult to set quotas. If you set up it for black people, you will also have to do it for the disabled, gipsies, Latinos… It would be impossible to create such a system. But on the other hand, positive discrimination similar to that of gender parity would be possible,” the MEP said.

    According to Le Figaro, the EU is looking to entice ethnic minority students into working for the European Union and states that human resources managers will undergo “unconscious bias” training.

    The Commission has called on the European Parliament and the European Council to also consider promoting diversity within their staff, as well.

    Younous Omarjee, an MEP of the far-left France Insoumise (FI), added: “Within the European institutions, the same patterns can be found throughout Europe. People of colour occupy the least valued positions and are often invisibilised: cleaning, maintenance, and security personnel. And at the top, the uniformity is quite different!”

    The report is not the first time the EU has been criticised as being “too white” in recent years.

    In 2017, former European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs, and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos praised several articles that stated the EU was too white and said the EU should replace white workers with “people of colour”.

    In the UK, many media articles have accused everything from the countryside to the music industry to weddings as being “too white”. Despite this, it was revealed that in media, ethnic minorities are actually vastly overrepresented compared to their share of the population.”

      Update (1210ET): Just minutes after Trump’s doctors insisted the president is doing well and that his fever had disappeared, while refusing to confirm that Trump had been treated with oxygen (though their refusal to deny it clearly suggested that he had), Reuters led a flurry of anonymously sourced reports claiming the president’s condition is much worse than his team is letting on.

      Reuters said Trump’s vital signs are in reality “very concerning” and that the next 48 hours will be “critical”.

      To be clear for people who don’t know how this works: the source spoke to the press pool on condition of anonymity. Those reporters know the identity of this person. The reporters made a judgement that the person is reliable and passed comment along to the wider WH press corps.

      One Twitter wit noted that these kind of tactics are simply “not acceptible” right now.

      The report added that the president was still not on the path to a full recovery. In other words, the description of his condition was a gross exaggeration by an administration determined to make the president look “strong” at all costs – because that’s clearly what Trump wants.

      One reporter also noted that Dr. Conley ended the briefing when a reporter asked whether Trump had been treated with steroids.

      “The First Lady has no indication for hospitalization or increased treatment.”

      It’s clear Trump was on oxygen Friday, which someone pointed out was visible from the picture of him walking to Marine One yesterday.

      When asked if Trump was on steroids, Conley ended the presser.

      Still, this isn’t exactly saying much. The White House is trying to make it seem like Trump is completely fine, the reality is probably closer to ‘the president is suffering from moderate flu-like symptoms’, but that’s still a far stretch away from requiring prone positioning and intubation.

      Update (1150ET): Trump’s doctors have just concluded a lengthy press briefing offering updates about the president’s condition. The takeaway: Trump is doing “very well” and doesn’t currently have a fever although it appears he did briefly receive oxygen before he traveled to Walter Reed. Whether that was the catalyst for the decision to send him to the hospital remains to be seen.

      CNN and the rest of the mainstream media are also going off about another tacit admission: While Dr. Conley didn’t offer many specifics about the timeline of Trump’s infection, he let slip that we’re approximately 72 hours in, which means Trump may have been infected for an entire day and a half before he informed the public about his condition.

    Vivek Goel is urging Canadians not to overreact to the daily coronavirus numbers and instead to adapt to living with the reality of the coronavirus.

    The warning comes as several provinces, including Ontario, are considering re-entering another lockdown to combat a surge in coronavirus cases this autumn.

    Vivek Goel, who is a professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public health and member of the COVID-19 Immunity Task Force made the comments during an interview with True North’s Anthony Furey.

    “What we seem to have developed, by and large, is a view that we need to focus on eliminating COVID-19,” said Goel.

    “We have to think about what the world is going to be like until there are effective vaccines fully deployed, and even in that scenario we may still have some cases. So it means we have to learn how to live with this.”

    On Wednesday, 20 doctors and academics published an open letter urging Ontario Premier Doug Ford to not plunge the province into another lockdown.

    “Lockdowns have been shown not to eliminate the virus. While they slow the spread of the virus, this only lasts as long as the lockdown lasts,” read the letter.

    “This creates a situation where there is no way to end the lockdown, and society cannot move forward in vitally important ways including in the health sector, the economy and other critically important instrumental goods including education, recreation and healthy human social interactions.”

    In recent weeks, Ontario has ramped up coronavirus restrictions as new infections continue to grow at alarming rates. On Friday, the province announced that it would curb the capacity of restaurants and bars, meanwhile, Quebec also announced that the province was under a red alert status.

    However, according to Goel, Canada is in a good place this fall compared to when the country was first plunged into lockdown.

    “If we look at how many companies and organizations still have people working from home, so the number of daily interactions are limited, we have physical distancing and other requirements, we don’t have big conferences, sports events, theatres — so we are already starting from a baseline of control measures that didn’t exist back in March,” said Goel.

    “Even in the worst-case scenarios, we’re not looking at having our health-care systems completely overwhelmed,” said Goel.

    Two suspects have been handed preliminary charges of financing terrorism and terrorist conspiracy in a judicial investigation opened Saturday. The same preliminary charges have been given to another suspect in a related case.

    Five other people who have been charged with financing terrorism will be sent to trial by the end of the year, the statement said.

    The prosecutor’s office said French police arrested a total of 30 people around the country in the case. Most were released without charges…”

    “Yemeni officials and tribal leaders said Saturday fighting between government forces and Houthi rebels has killed at least two dozen people in the past three days in Marib province and the key port city of Hodeida.

    The war in Yemen erupted in 2014, when the Iran-allied Houthis seized the capital and much of the country’s north. A Saudi-led coalition, determined to restore the authority of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi’s government, launched a sweeping military intervention months later.

    The officials said more than 23 people were killed and dozens were wounded from both sides in the most recent fighting for the oil-rich Marib. The Iranian-backed rebels have sought to take control of the region from the internationally recognized government, in order to strengthen their position in ongoing U.N.-mediated peace talks.

    Tribal leaders said the Houthis have deployed reinforcements to break government defenses in Marib, but they have made no progress.

    Saudi-led forces have hit Houthi military convoys in the region’s desert, according to the tribal leaders.

    In Hodeida, fierce fighting erupted on Wednesday in the town of Durayhimi, just south of the strategic Hodeida port, which handles about 70% of Yemen’s commercial and humanitarian imports, Yemeni officials said.

    They said at least one civilian was killed and seven others were wounded in the clashes, which were described as the fiercest violence in months between government forces and the rebels.

    All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media, as did the tribal leaders for fear of reprisals.

    Hodeida was the scene of bloody fighting in 2018, before the warring sides signed a U.N.-brokered agreement in December that year that included a cease-fire in the port city and an exchange of more than 15,000 prisoners. But the deal was never fully implemented.

    The war in Yemen has spawned the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, leaving millions suffering from food and medical shortages. It has killed over 112,000 people, including fighters and civilians.”

    Several men in Syria’s last opposition stronghold of Idlib province told the Guardian this week that over the last month military commanders and brokers who claimed to represent Turkish security companies had offered them work guarding observation posts and oil and gas facilities in Azerbaijan on three- or six-month contracts.
    They were offered around 10,000 Turkish lira (£1,000) a month – a huge sum of money for Syrians trapped by a decade of war and poverty.
    Mustafa Khalid, who asked that his real name not be used because he was not authorised to speak to media, confirmed the previous reports, telling the Guardian he signed up on 18 September and was now stationed at a post on the line of contact which has come under sustained artillery fire since last Sunday.
    The 23-year-old from Idlib city said he travelled as part of a contingent of 1,000 Syrian men from the Turkish-backed Sultan Murad, Suleiman Shah and Al Hamza divisions which left the Hawar Kilis border crossing with Turkey for a military base in Gaziantep on 23 September.
    The next day they flew to Istanbul and then on to Azerbaijan via Turkish military cargo planes. Data from the Flight Radar website, which tracks aircraft movements, as well as geo-located pictures and coordinates sent to the Guardian, confirm his account.
    Syrians posted to Nagorno-Karabakh appear be wearing the blue uniforms that are standard issue to Azerbaijani border guards.
    “I was hesitant to come here at the beginning because I had no idea about this country and I don’t speak the language. I knew there were skirmishes between the two countries, but I didn’t know that I was coming to war. I thought it was just guard work,” Khalid said.

    Italy’s far-right chief Matteo Salvini appears in court Saturday for allegedly illegally detaining migrants at sea, in a potentially career-derailing trial he has transformed into a political convention.

    Prosecutors in the Sicilian city of Catania accuse Salvini of abusing his powers as then-interior minister to block 116 migrants from disembarking from the Italian Gregoretti coastguard boat last year, under his so-called “closed ports” policy.

    If the opposition leader and head of the anti-immigrant League party is convicted for more than two years, he could well also be barred from holding public office for six years, preventing him from running for prime minister at the next election in 2023.

    “I’ve picked out my best suit” for the hearing, Salvini quipped as he arrived in Catania Thursday for three days of rallies, dinners and debates on issues from immigration to security in the city’s port area.

    The League has printed T-Shirts and advertised cheap flights for the “Italians choose freedom” festival, which will feature fellow far-right head Giorgia Meloni, of the Brothers of Italy party, and bigwigs from ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia.

    A 500-strong police force will be tasked with preventing clashes between Salvini fans and left-wing protesters.

    Due to address a rally Saturday after the hearing, Salvini has said he’ll “plead guilty of having defended Italy and Italians”.

    In court will be a Nigerian family who claim they were “treated worse than animals” and are a civil party in the case.

      Rome, Italy – Matteo Salvini appears in court on Saturday on charges of kidnapping more than a hundred migrants, in an event that the Italian far-right leader has attempted to use to boost his dwindling popularity.

      The case relates to an incident in July 2019 when, as interior minister, he refused to allow 131 refugees and migrants – including 15 unaccompanied children – to disembark in Sicily from the Gregoretti coastguard ship for five days.

      Prosecutors in the southern Sicilian city of Catania accuse Salvini, head of the far-right League party, of abuse of power. He faces up to 15 years in jail for aggravated kidnap.

      “If the court judges him innocent, he will re-emerge with new strength from his current decline, as he will be able to play the card of the victim haunted by the judiciary,” said Anna Simone, professor of sociology at Roma Tre University. “But if he is convicted, that will be Salvini’s political definite downfall.”

      A preliminary hearing judge will decide on Saturday weather the case is strong enough to proceed with the trial.

      “I’ll head to the court with peace of mind and a clear conscience to have saved lives and defended my country,” Salvini said on Friday in the Sicilian city, where he has been holding rallies for three days.

      A stream of his political supporters, from far-right leader Giorgia Meloni to representatives of Silvio Berlusconi’s right-wing party Forza Italia, are expected to attend. A 500-strong police force has been deployed to prevent clashes between Salvini supporters and left-wing protesters.

      If the court decides to proceed, it would mark the first time Salvini’s “closed ports” policy would be tried.

      In a show of force when he took office as interior minister in 2018, Salvini declared Italy’s ports off-limits to rescue ships, triggering a series of standoffs between rescue vessels and the Italian authorities.

      While no date has yet been set, there is a second hearing awaiting Salvini for the illegal detention of 107 migrants on board of the Open Arms rescue ship, in August last year.

      Prosecutors believe that by closing ports, Salvini violated international law under which Italy had a responsibility to provide a “place of safety” for rescued people.

      A further charge is that Salvini abused his power by depriving the people on board the Gregoretti of their personal freedom.

      For his part, Salvini claims that he acted for the “common interest” and that the waiting was necessary to reach a deal about the redistribution of the refugees and migrants with other countries.

      His defence team stresses that the decision to hold the group of people was reached collectively, with the government.

      Salvini’s popularity began to fall in August last year, when he sought to trigger a snap election by pulling the plug on a fractious governing coalition between the League and the populist Five Star Movement.
      His gamble backfired when his former coalition partners smoothed their differences with the centre-left Democratic Party and formed an unlikely alliance.

      “That is when he lost his institutional credibility; since then it has been a steady decline,” Simone said.

      Some observers believe that Salvini’s trial shows Italy is taking the abuse of refugees and migrants more seriously.

      Local elections two weeks ago saw gains by the left-wing Democratic Party, boosting its leverage against its populist coalition partner.

      As its first move, the party requested a revision of Salvini’s anti-migrant decrees, which is expected to be approved in coming weeks.

      The two trials are limiting “what seemed to be a freefall in xenophobic feelings”, said Arturo Salerni, the lawyer representing Open Arms and president of the Italian Coalition for Civil Liberties.

      “The fact that the court says that a minister has to be tried for kidnapping on two different instances because people’s human rights and international conventions can’t be considered as waste paper, well that is a guarantee that certain things can’t be done with impunity,” Salerni said.
