Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  2. BREITBART CNN’s Lemon: The Way to Fix Mount Rushmore Is Add Obama

Tuesday on CNN, host Don Lemon said President Barack Obama should be added to the Mount Rushmore sculptures of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt.

While discussing a California couple charged for painting over a “Black Lives Matter” mural, Lemon said, “You see the right-wing machine kick in, media kick in and see Trump’s poll numbers go south. […]

I think, listen … if they are going to put someone on Mount Rushmore, considering the history of the country, the first black president should be front and center.”

[…]Lemon said, “Maybe some of the people up there on Mount Rushmore, who knows? The name shouldn’t be Mount Rushmore if you talk to Native Americans. It is stolen land. It was only Mount Rushmore 40 years before they started to carve presidents’ faces in it. No one got any money for that.”

    • Concocting fictitious narratives to counter non-existent speech infractions. Speech infractions. Putting it this way shows its true weight, does it not? Or how about “verbal misdemeanors”? When I am the boss of the whole world I will start by countering the whole Leftist “HATE” cannons by converting them to verbal misdemeanors, because my mother told me to refrain from using the word Hate. Too strong, she said. You save that one for when it really matters.

Concocting an exaggerated menace to the majority of the population to damage the economy before the coming election. Ride the wave you’ve created just like a surfer.

Disparate thoughts but not really. In the land of lies the honest man should be king. And he is, for now. But the lies keep motoring until the grown-ups say enough. PT is a great man who needs help. Watching David McCoullagh speak about George Washington is wonderful. Character Trumps all.

  3. Taliban Demands Release of 600 Blacklisted Insurgents, Pakistani Fighters – Source (sputniknews, Jul 8, 2020)—source/

“The Afghan government is hanging back on releasing 600 of prisoners on the Taliban’s* list under the US-negotiated deal due to the fact that some of them are on the US and Afghan security blacklists and others are Pakistani fighters, a knowledgeable source in the government told Sputnik on Tuesday.

“There are 250 of them on the US blacklist, another 155 of them are Pakistani fighters who were arrested in face-to-face clashes with the Afghan forces, and the rest are on the national directorate of security blacklist”, the source said.

According to the source, the United States is also opposed to the release of all Taliban prisoners, even though this might delay the inter-Afghan talks.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, in turn, came up with a statement, insisting on the release of all listed designated prisoners as a pre-requisite for inter-Afghan talks.

“There are no prisoners in our list to be blacklisted. And we have promised and agreed with the United States that the word blacklist does not make sense now”, Mujahid told journalists.

The Afghan government and the Taliban committed to releasing each other’s prisoners — 5,000 and 1,000, respectively — as part of an agreement negotiated by the United States in the Qatari capital of Doha on 29 February, with the view to launch inter-Afghan talks. The initial deadline was 10 March, but extensions applied due to an internal power crisis in Kabul and the coronavirus pandemic. The Taliban have recently handed Kabul a list of an additional 600 detainees to be released.

I salute Mayor Ben Rozier of Bloomingdale, Georgia for kicking off the pushback by refusing the city council and BLM’s demand that he resign for his truthful post on Facebook. Mayor Rozier’s post is titled “Privilege.” “What is privilege? … Privilege is wearing $200 sneakers when you’ve never had a job. Privilege is wearing $300 Beats headphones while living on public assistance. Privilege is having a Smartphone with a data plan which you receive no bill for. “Privilege is living in public subsidized housing where you don’t have a water bill, where rising property taxes and rents and energy costs have absolutely no effect on the amount of food you can put on your table. “Privilege is the ability to go march against and protest against anything that triggers you, without worry about calling out of work and the consequences that accompany such behavior. “Privilege is having as many children as you want, regardless of your employment status, and be able to send them off to daycare or school you don’t pay for. “Privilege is sending your kids to school early for the before school programs and breakfast, and then keeping them there for the after school program… all at no cost to you… paid for by the people who DO HAVE TO DEAL WITH RISING TAXES AND COSTS! …you know, us so-called ‘PRIVILEGED’ the ones who pay while you TAKE TAKE TAKE!” BLM protesters’ and the Bloomingdale city council’s heads exploded over Mayor Rozier daring to state the truth. Anarchists deem speaking the truth unacceptable. Lloyd Marcus

Naturally, the visual that was produced on Twitter to scare people was pretty convincing to the non-thinking media types that pounced on the story. But guess what? Now in the very same place (Verkhoyansk) that became the poster child for climate change back on June 19th and 20th, we now have abnormal cold and snow, according to the Siberian Times:… Snow in summer? Where’s the “climate change” outrage? Oh, right, it only applies if it’s hot and there’s a roasting visual to accompany the narrative for mindless media regurgitators. Meanwhile, the locals are huddling around fires wondering where that 38C record went. Anthony Watts

  6. Watch: Black Lives Matter Protest Joins ‘Allah hu Akbar’ Chanting Pro-Yemen Demonstration (breitbart, Jul 8, 2020)

“On Sunday, hundreds of pro-Yemeni and Black Lives Matter protesters joined forces in London to demonstrate against “white” capitalism, systemic racism, and the war in Yemen.

In a Breitbart London exclusive video, protesters are seen shouting the Islamic phrase “Allah hu Akbar” (Allah is greater [than your god]), “Justice for Yemen”, as well as common slogans to the BLM movement in Britain such as “the UK is not innocent”.

A white male activist — who said that he will never truly understand the plight of minorities because he does not “live in a black body” — pointed to the capitalist system as the reason for the world’s ills.

“Quarterly return is the god that capitalism continually worships at. The realities are, as Extinction Rebellion well put it, that the profit motive means that you can never have infinite growth on a finite planet,” he said.

The left-wing speaker went on to warn of the consequences of unemployment during the economic crisis spurred by the Chinese coronavirus. He said: “The realities are that within the next six months we may well have 50 per cent unemployment in the United Kingdom and when that happens, you’re going to see huge, huge social change.”

Another activist took aim at the American Declaration of Independence, saying that it was a product of “white capitalist slave owners” and therefore was used to oppress black people.

“We trust in a concept that was built off our backs and built to enslave. Democracy today does not exist, when we have black people dying on the streets, when we have famine in Yemen and occupation in Palestine. Democracy doesn’t exist because, in the UK, capitalist interests mean more than the interests of the general public,” she said.

Echoing similar rhetoric from previous Black Lives Matter protests in London, a young, self-described “mixed-race” woman said that white people having children with a black person does not mean they are not racist.

“By the way, to you who wants or has a mixed-race kid, I hope you realise that doesn’t automatically make you anti-racist. In fact, you’re doing the opposite,” she said.

“You’re, first of all, objectifying and fetishising someone like me and what you are fetishising is a whitewashed blackness… you’re saying that’s okay or that’s trendy, well I am not your fucking trend,” she added.

The far-left rhetoric seen at Black Lives Matter protests and from the leadership of BLM UK has led to one prominent activist distancing herself from the group, saying that the movement has been “hijacked” by a group of Marxists.

“The issue with BLM UK is they have not revealed themselves, they have not been transparent. They are abolitionists, they believe in the removal of prisons, smashing capitalism and abolishing the police,’ actress and activist Imarn Ayton told the Mail on Sunday.

“I am just mortified because everyone has given money and they are not going to use that to better the black community. They are going to use it to abolish the police, remove prisons and get rid of capitalism,” Ayton added.”

  7. EU Commission Declares Asylum Rejections at Borders Illegal (breitbart, Jul 8, 2020)

“The European Commission has declared that European Union member states cannot reject asylum applications at their borders or close their borders to asylum seekers.

Ylva Johansson, Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, stated that countries should not push back migrants from the border and that all asylum applications should be allowed to take place within the territory of the European Union.

“Rejections are illegal. Not everyone has the right to asylum, but everyone has the right to be treated in line with our values. When people apply for asylum in the EU, they appeal to European values. And we must honour that appeal,” Ms Johansson said, according to Il Giornale.

Johansson added that the EU would be conducting investigations into member states which rejected migrants at their borders. The commissioner said: “We cannot protect EU borders by violating people’s rights. In my opinion, it is time to consider the possibility of setting up a new mechanism to monitor border rejections. We have to make sure that Member States respect EU law.”

Even during the coronavirus crisis, the European Union has made it clear it supports borders being open for asylum seekers.

In March, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen initially tried to keep all of the EU internal borders open, stating: “In this moment of crisis it is of utmost importance to keep our internal market going.”

Many countries closed their borders due to the pandemic, but have recently seen a surge in new asylum seeker arrivals upon relaxing the lockdowns, particularly in Italy.

Arrivals have coincided with migrant transport NGOs also resuming their activities in the Mediterranean in recent weeks.

Last week, Italian NGO Mediterranea Saving Humans brought 43 migrants from North Africa to Italy, eight of them testing positive for the Wuhan coronavirus. A month before, the German NGO Sea-Watch brought 209 migrants, with 28 of them testing positive for the virus.”

He is not giving the Board what they want. Recant — say you used obsolete data – That is what they want. Say that it is OK to put COVID19 on any death certificate because this is the doctor’s discretion. Say that you will be putting COVID19 on all death certificates from now on.

  10. Serbia: Heavy police presence in Belgrade after night of protest against renewed COVID-19 lockdown

Police deployed tear gas, mounted units, and armoured vehicles in Belgrade late on Tuesday to counter protests against a renewed coronavirus lockdown that continued into the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced a new weekend long lockdown on Tuesday amid a sharp rise in the number of coronavirus infections in the Serbian capital.

Clean-up operations could also be seen underway as fire personnel extinguished fires set during the protests, while street cleaners hosed the streets.

According to reports, 43 police officers, as well as 17 protesters, were injured during the clashes. Some protesters tried to storm the National Assembly building with police responding with tear gas.

Critics of the new lockdown have alleged that the government, which lifted almost all restrictions just two weeks ago, prior to the parliamentary elections on June 21, has mislead the public about the scale of the outbreak.

  15. Ankara Testing Russian-Bought S-400s on US-Made Fighter Jets in Turkey, Report Says (sputniknews, Jul 8, 2020)

“Moscow and Ankara signed a $2.5 billion agreement on the sale of S-400s to Turkey in late 2017, with delivery of the system beginning in July 2019. The deal prompted Washington to kick Turkey out of the F-35 fighter jet program and threaten the country with sanctions.

The Turkish military has begun new field testing of its Russia-bought S-400 air defence systems against US-made F-16 and F-4 fighter jets at the Murted Air Base outside Ankara, aviation blog Fighter Jets World has reported, citing open source intelligence.

According to the portal, the testing began on July 4, and is set to continue until November 26.

Turkey is said to have proceeded with the testing in spite of warnings from Washington that the activation of the S-400s could result in new sanctions against Ankara.
The Turkish government has remained tightlipped about the testing, with a statement from the Turkish government reportedly confirming only that F-16s and other Turkish Air Force jets would be carrying out low and high altitude test flights in the vicinity of Ankara “within the scope of some projects carried out in coordination with the presidency of defence industries.”

However, an unauthenticated image shows what the outlet claims is a US-made jet flying over Murted while S-400 components, including the 91N6E and 96L6E radars, operate on the ground.

The Turkish military is known to have begun testing of its S-400s against US-made fighters as far back as November 2019, with TRT World releasing footage of air defence system’s radars operating while fighters flew overhead. The extent of the testing was not immediately clear, as Turkey only planned to make its S-400s fully operational by April of this year, although it was reported that the testing was related to establishing cross compatibility between the platforms to avoid accidental friendly fire incidents.

Turkey’s purchase of the Russian-made air defence systems led to a downturn of relations between Ankara and Washington, with the US unceremoniously booting the country out of the F-35 fighter program, despite Turkey’s status as a senior partner, and threatening sanctions under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), a legal act threatening punishment against any country which purchases Russian-made weapons.

Earlier this week, a bipartisan group of US senators asked Defence Secretary Mark Esper to speed up the pace at which Turkey is removed from the F-35’s supply chain, and reiterated their support for the imposition of sanctions against Ankara using CAATSA.

Before that, senior Republican Senator John Thune suggested that the US try to buy out Turkey’s S-400s as a way to allow Turkish President Erdogan to get “out of the jam he put himself in” by buying the systems. Late last month, Omer Celik, press secretary of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party, said there were no legal grounds for Turkey to sell its S-400s from Russia to the US, adding that Ankara would be the systems’ “final user.”

The S-400 remains the most advanced road-mobile anti-aircraft weapons system in Russia’s arsenal, and is capable of shooting down everything from enemy aircraft and drones to ballistic and cruise missiles at ranges of up to 400 km. In addition to Russia and Turkey, the system is operated by China and Belarus. Russia and India signed a $5.5 billion deal for the delivery of 4 regiments of S-400s in October 2018, with New Delhi recently asking that the shipment be expedited.”

Ok. Plague: Mongols eat raw rat guts, don’t mind the fleas. Cases pop up every year. It’s endemic in the region.

      ProMed moderator comments:
“Most cases are due to bubonic plague following the bite of an infected rodent flea, causing a swollen and very tender lymph gland…. history of possible exposure to infected rodents, rabbits, or fleas. A person usually becomes ill with bubonic plague 2-6 days after being bitten.

When bubonic plague is left untreated, plague bacteria invade the bloodstream…. Infection of the lungs with the plague bacterium causes the pneumonic form of plague, a severe respiratory illness… If plague patients are not given specific antimicrobial therapy, the disease can progress rapidly to death.

At this stage, person-to-person spread can occur, causing other cases of “primary” plague pneumonia. A quarantine would be required with contact tracing and even prophylactic antimicrobials if the index case or cases actually had plague pneumonia.”

“It is a recurrent problem in the East Asian nation. A couple died of bubonic plague in the western Mongolian province of Bayan-Ulgii in April 2019 after eating raw marmot meat. It prompted authorities to warn against eating raw marmot because it can carry _Yersinia pestis_, the plague bacillus. The plague is spread by marmots coughing or through the bite of the tarbagan flea they carry, or through consumption of their meat.”
“Mongolia has quarantined its western region near the border with Russia after identifying two suspected cases of the black plague linked to the consumption of marmot meat, health officials said Wed 1 Jul 2020. Lab tests confirmed that two unidentified individuals had contracted the “marmot plague” in the region of Khovd, Mongolia’s National Center for Zoonotic Disease (NCZD) said in a statement.…

“Mongolia closed a key border crossing with Russia in May 2019 on suspicion that it may have played a role in an outbreak of the plague, stranding several Russian tourists. Experts say the direct descendants of the same bubonic plague that killed 50 million people in the 14th century still exist today, killing around 2000 people a year.”

FBI Director Christopher Wray is drawing attention to a program used by the Chinese government, which reportedly forces U.S. citizens born in China to move back to Beijing. He raised the alarm about the program while speaking at an event for the Hudson Institute in Washington Tuesday.

Wray said Chinese President Xi Jinping “spearheaded the program” called “Fox Hunt” and officials involved in it use cyber theft, blackmail and espionage to silence those who dissent against the Chinese government.

“Fox Hunt is a sweeping bid by General Secretary Xi to target Chinese nationals whom he sees as threats and who live outside of China, across the world,” stated the FBI director. “We’re talking about political rivals, dissidents and critics seeking to expose China’s extensive human rights violations.”

  18. RT – ‘The purge will only accelerate’: Stefan Molyneux suspended from Twitter just days after receiving YouTube ban

Conservative firebrand Stefan Molyneux has had his Twitter account suspended, just a week after he was banned from YouTube. His removal from the platform comes amid a growing debate over free speech on social media.

The ban came without warning, Molyneux claimed during a livestream in which he discussed the development. “It’s nice to see that Twitter is talking to tech journalists before they would talk to me,” he said. The popular right-wing pundit and intellectual suggested that he was removed from the platform after promoting a new essay that outlines his values and beliefs. “It’s not hard to understand why powerful people might not want you to read what I wrote below,” reads a note at the top of the essay, in which he announced his removal from Twitter.

Molyneux argued that the campaign to deplatform conservative voices has started to “energize” conservatives and that his ban demonstrates “who has the power and who doesn’t have the power.”

Twitter appears to dispute the notion that he was removed for ideological reasons. In a statement provided to CNN, the company said that Molyneux “was suspended for spam and platform manipulation, specifically operating fake accounts.”

Liberal journalists applauded Molyneux’s ban. Jared Holt, a report for Right Wing Watch, said the move was “overdue” and expressed curiosity about what finally motivated Twitter to pull the plug on his account.

But others condemned Twitter’s decision and warned of a growing assault on free speech, expecting “the purge” to “accelerate.”

Conservative commentator Mike Cernovich predicted that the group of prominent public figures who recently signed an open letter condemning cancel culture would not rush to Molyneux’s defense.

Molyneux, the host of Freedomain Radio, was permanently banned from YouTube last Monday, after allegedly violating the site’s “hate speech” policies. His removal from the platform came amid a wide-ranging social media purge, which resulted in popular Trump-related accounts receiving bans on Reddit and Twitch, as well as other right-wingers being booted from YouTube.

  19. Associated Press – Brazil’s president, infected with virus, touts malaria drug

Bolsonaro posted a photo of himself eating breakfast on Facebook, and a message that said his government provided payouts to informal sector laborers, thereby saving jobs and lives without spreading panic about the pandemic. The nation’s confirmed death toll from COVID-19 is the second highest in the world after the United States.

“No country in the world did it like Brazil,” Bolsonaro said. “For those who root against hydroxychloroquine, but don’t present alternatives, I regret to inform you that I’m very well with its use and, with God’s grace, I will live for a long time still.”

Bolsonaro said Tuesday that he tested positive for the virus, after months of downplaying its severity while deaths mounted rapidly inside the country. He repeatedly touted chloroquine, A MORE TOXIC VERSION of the anti-malarial drug.

A string of studies in Britain and the United States, as well as by the World Health Organization, have found it ineffective and sometimes deadly because of its effects on the heart. Several studies were canceled early because of that.

The president told reporters he underwent a lung X-ray on Monday after experiencing fever, muscle aches and malaise. As of Tuesday, his fever had subsided, he said, and he attributed the improvement to hydroxychloroquine.

bloomberg – Bolsonaro Takes Hydroxychloroquine as Covid-19 Treatment

Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro posted a video on a social media account on Tuesday of him taking a pill he said was hydroxychloroquine.

Earlier, Bolsonaro confirmed he has tested positive for the coronavirus after months of downplaying its severity while deaths mounted rapidly inside the country.

“I’m taking here the 3rd dose of hydroxychloroquine”, referring to the anti-malaria drug that he, like US President Donald Trump, has been promoting even though it has not been proven effective against COVID-19.

The World Health Organization said last week it is ending a trial into whether hydroxychloroquine helps patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

According to WHO, a review of the interim results showed hydroxychloroquine and lopinavir/ritonavir “produce little or no reduction in the mortality of hospitalized COVID-19 patients when compared to standard of care.”

Bolsonaro has often appeared in public to shake hands with supporters and mingle with crowds, at times without a mask.

He has said that his history as an athlete would protect him from the virus and that it would be nothing more than a “little flu” if he were to contract it.

  20. CBC – CBSA did not know whereabouts of 34,000 foreign nationals slated for removal: AG report

Of the 50,000 enforceable cases in the agency’s inventory, CBSA didn’t know where two thirds were

Canada’s border agency did not know the whereabouts of tens of thousands of foreign nationals who were ordered to leave the country, according to a scathing new report from the auditor general.

“We concluded that the Canada Border Services Agency did not remove the majority of individualswho were subject to enforceable removal orders as soon as possible to protect the integrity of the immigration system and maintain public safety,” notes the audit, released this morning.

Auditor General Karen Hogan and her staff took a deep dive into whether the CBSA removed individuals legally ordered to leave the country as soon as possible and whether it co-ordinated information with the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, an independent tribunal, and the department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

The review looked at all of the cases in the CBSA’s data management system as of April 2019 by inventory.

Despite a recent increase in removals, about 50,000 enforceable cases piled up in the agency’s inventory, notes the report.

“In two-thirds [34,700] of these cases, the agency did not know the whereabouts of the individuals. Most of the accumulated cases had been enforceable for several years,” it says.

Failed asylum claimants majority of those ordered to leave

Foreign nationals found inadmissible to Canada include failed asylum claimants, visitors who overstay their visas or those with criminal ties.

The audit said failed asylum claimants make up the largest share of those ordered to leave each year.

About 2,800 files in the “wanted inventory” are criminal cases, meaning the CBSA has identified those individuals as people who may pose a safety risk because of criminal convictions, charges or human rights violations, or because they have ties to organized crime or pose a national security risk.

Criminal cases languish unresolved, on average, for more than a decade, according to the AG’s findings.

The audit did not look into whether any of those flagged individuals committed a crime while awaiting deportation.

Officials with the auditor general’s office said the CBSA lost track of individuals for a variety of reasons, including people not showing up for their hearings or skipping out on their reporting conditions.

When an individual goes missing, the CBSA can issue an immigration warrant for their arrest. The audit says the CBSA did issue such warrants but rarely completed the annual investigations to locate those with criminal connections.

The CBSA did not conduct the regular follow-ups to locate these individuals, which involves opening their files at least every three years — or once a year for people with criminal histories — says the review.

The audit also found that poor data quality resulted in cases missing from the agency’s removal inventories.

“Because of delays in processing data received from federal partners, the agency did not have the information it needed to track the status of removal orders,” it said.

“Among cases with enforceable orders, we found that many were inactive or stalled because of poor case management, even some that were considered high priority. Furthermore, many cases we examined were stalled because of missing travel documents, such as passports — yet little was done to obtain these documents.”

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer, whose party promised to to end illegal crossings by asylum seekers during the 2019 election, said the federal government needs to take removal orders more seriously.

“Clearly, this is another example of the Liberal government being unable to to ensure that we have a fair, orderly and compassionate immigration system,” he told a press conference this morning.

“Obviously we need a government that takes this kind of thing seriously, that when people have been found to have either fraudulently represented their cases or found to be ineligible to be in Canada — in order to respect the integrity of our system — that those decisions have to be followed up.”

    CBSA accepts recommendations

Public Safety Minister Bill Blair, whose portfolio includes the CBSA, said his department will accept all the recommendations made by the auditor general in her report to improve the agency’s removal strategy.

“The CBSA is taking steps to locate foreign nationals whose whereabouts are unknown by completing a review of all outstanding cases, prioritizing criminal cases, and focusing investigations on the most concerning cases,” he said in a statement.

In addition to improving its removals strategy, the border agency will enhance the way it tracks and triages cases to ensure priority ones are addressed quickly, Blair said in a statement.

“This includes continuing to implement a data integrity strategy to ensure that it can quickly identify the stages all cases are at so they can move forward in a timely fashion.”

  21. Rights group says 180 dead found in Burkina Faso mass graves (abcnews, Jul 7, 2020)

“At least 180 bodies were found in mass graves in northern Burkina Faso with evidence suggesting the government army was involved in large-scale executions turning the area into a “killing field,” Human Rights Watch said on Wednesday.

The bodies of men were dumped in groups of up to 20 under bridges, in fields and in vacant lots, the rights group said in a new report. The killings took place between November last year and June and the majority of the dead were found by residents within 5 kilometers (3 miles) of the government- controlled town of Djibo, in the country’s Sahel region.

This is the latest in a string of growing accusations of extrajudicial killings by Burkina Faso’s military, which is struggling to stem jihadist violence that’s spread across the country, internally displacing almost 1 million people. Last month Amnesty International documented gross human rights violations committed by the security forces between March and April, including forced disappearances and killings.

In May, 12 people who had been arrested as suspected extremists were found dead in cells in eastern Burkina Faso after being held overnight, according to a government statement at the time. A local rights group and civilians, say the government was responsible for the deaths.

“The growing number of allegations of extrajudicial killings by the army is deeply worrying, and the lack of progress on investigations suggests a lack of political will,” Corinne Dufka, West Africa director for Human Rights Watch, told The Associated Press. The jihadists pose a genuine threat and have killed with brutal disregard for life, but killing suspects in the name of security is as unlawful as it is counterproductive, she said.

The report, based on 23 interviews, alleged that government security forces were responsible for the majority of the killings and that most of the victims were ethnic Fulani herders, who had been blindfolded, bound and shot. The country’s Fulani ethnic group, who are generally Muslim, have been increasingly targeted by the military and local defense militias for their alleged affiliation with the Islamist groups, say rights groups.

Djibo, where many Fulanis live, has been at the epicenter of the violence and has been blockaded for months as jihadists have put landmines in the roads leading to the town. Several locals told AP that it’s common to see bodies strewn along the road in the morning. They blame those deaths on the military, although their charges could not be verified.

The international community is urging Burkina Faso’s government to make sure that its troops uphold basic rights. In a statement on Wednesday, the U.S. said the government must investigate the allegations and “honor the state’s responsibility to protect its citizens.”

The government didn’t respond to AP’s request for a comment but in a three-page letter to Human Rights Watch, the ministry of defense pledged to investigate the mass graves. It said the killings occurred during an uptick in attacks by armed Islamic extremists and suggested the killings could have been carried out by these groups who were using stolen army uniforms and equipment.”

  25. Syria families in Turkey marrying off ‘underage daughters for money’ amid coronavirus

“Campaigners have warned about the increasing numbers of Syrian families marrying off their underage daughters to Turkish men for money amid the coronavirus pandemic.

According to a report in the Independent, ECPAT, a network of organisations working to end sexual exploitation of children, described it as an “economic coping mechanism” for desperate Syrian families who are unable to financially provide for their children.

Ezgi Yaman, secretary general of ECPAT Turkey, said: “We have heard of cases where Syrian families are selling their daughters to marry — either formally or informally — Turkish men. Sometimes to be a second or third wife of a man. This is to get rid of them.

To have one less plate at the table. The families are also getting money to help them pay for rent.”

We heard several cases where the family couldn’t afford to pay the rent to the landlord, so they say: ‘We are giving you our daughter’.

In some cases, the daughters live at a Turkish landlord’s house in servitude and it is labour exploitation but most cases also involve sexual exploitation. Syrian families are also underreporting incidents of unofficial marriages due to being afraid of losing their legal documents or legal status as refugees.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, it has been particularly difficult for the organisation to reach children from Syrian families. Domestic and sexual violence have also increased during the lockdown, which ended in Turkey on 1 June.

The report also highlighted a controversial piece of legislation which was debated in parliament earlier in this year that would enable men accused of having underage sex to get suspended sentences if they marry their victims if their age-gap is less than ten years.

However, many NGOs oppose it as it puts already vulnerable female refugees at risk and has been dubbed the “marry-your-rapist” bill.

Turkey is home to the largest child refugee population in the world and as of April hosts almost four million refugees, of which 3.6 million are from Syria.”

  26. Report: Dubai is a haven for dirty money

“Corrupt and criminal actors from around the world, including Afghan warlords, Russian mobsters, Nigerian kleptocrats, European money launderers, Iranian sanctions-busters, and East African gold smugglers, operate through or from Dubai, says a new damning report by Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

The 130-page report into “Dubai’s role in facilitating corruption and global illicit financial flows” found wealth amassed through criminal behaviour being washed through the wealthy Gulf emirate. With nearly 30 free trade zones, the report explains, Dubai has become a haven for money laundering due to the lax regulatory oversight and customs enforcement. These areas also allow businesses to conceal criminal proceeds by forging business documents.

“Dubai’s vulnerability to illicit financial flows”, the emirate’s allure to luxury property market; “How Emirati law enforcement allows kleptocrats and organized crime to thrive”; were some of the topics addressed by ten experts on the economy of the Gulf.

Various leaked documents, from the Panama Papers, for instance, “demonstrate that Dubai is a place where many people associated with criminal activity feel free to settle down with their families, manage their networks, and engage in smuggling and money laundering”, said the report.

Illuminating “Dubai’s darker side”, the report cited the emirate’s “ambivalence”

toward unregulated financial dealings and illicit trade. The problem is “long-standing and deeply entrenched” said the report. “Unlike other sharia-based legal systems, Dubai’s civil legal frameworks provide insufficient anti–money laundering regulation and oversight—a reflection of the emirate’s long history as a freewheeling regional trading center,” the report explained.

While acknowledging that numerous other cities also offer havens for illicit gains and luxurious lifestyles, Dubai’s allure for dirty money is on another scale. “Dubai is just one of many criminal facilitation nodes throughout the world but addressing the emirate’s problematic role presents anticorruption and law enforcement practitioners and policymakers with particularly complex and delicate challenges.”

One of the main reasons for Dubai’s allure of dirty money is said to be the lack of any domestic and international scrutiny and the absence of any external pressure. “Emirati elites are free to resist reforms that endanger their vested interests or their preferred political economic vision for Dubai and the UAE overall,” said the report.

The report predicted that “Dubai’s role as a facilitator of corruption is unsustainable over the long term”, explaining that an economy “predicated on continued international tolerance of the emirate’s permissive attitude toward many types of illicit activities” will not continue for ever with western government’s reassessing their strategies and relationships with the Gulf monarchies.

In April, the UAE was placed under a year-long observation by a global finance watchdog for failing to stem money laundering and terrorist financing by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). The Paris-based watchdog found that Abu Dhabi was failing to address the issue and was urged to take extra measures to avoid being included on an international watchlist.

In January, former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razaq reportedly sought the help of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Zayed to conceal links to a multibillion-dollar corruption case in which he was implicated.”

  27. Ilhan Omar calls for dismantling US ‘system of oppression’ in anti-racism speech

“Muslim Congresswoman Ilhan Omar delivered a scathing speech about racism in the US and called for the dismantling of a “system of oppression”.

The Minnesota Democrat slammed the US’ weak response to tackling racism, saying it exists systematically at every level, following the killing of African American man George Floyd at the hands of White police officers.

“We can’t stop at criminal justice reform or policing reform,” she said during an outdoor press conference.

“We are not merely fighting to tear down the systems of oppression in the criminal justice system. We are fighting to tear down systems of oppression that exist in housing, in education, in health care, in employment, [and] in the air we breathe.”

“As long as our economy and political systems prioritise profit without considering who is profiting, who is being shut out, we will perpetuate this inequality,” Omar continued.

She said that Americans must work of dismantling the “whole system of oppression” in the US.

In the speech, the ‘Squad’ member promoted the Green New Deal, championed by fellow Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, “because we know that environmental racism is real”.

Her comments ruffled feathers about leading Republicans, including President Donald Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr, who took to Twitter and asked Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden if he agreed with Omar’s words.

“Does @joebiden agree with his supporter @ilhanmn that we need to dismantle the United States economy and political system?” Trump Jr. tweeted.

“Does our education system know it has failed you?” Omar shot back.

“Your level of comprehension is such an embarrassment to our country, maybe someone can offer you free English classes.”

Some Republicans criticised Omar for what they perceived to be an attack on the US constitution.

“Ilhan Omar took an oath to defend and protect the Constitution, not shred it,” Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn said on Twitter.

“Omar and her Marxist comrades are a threat to our Democracy. Omar should resign.”

Omar held a press conference in Minnesota, alongside leaders from the Minnesota People of Color and Indigenous Caucus.

Supporters of Omar took to social media to defend her words, calling them vital in the wake of the killing of Floyd.

New York Democrat congressman Jamaal Bowman offered his support, writing on Twitter: “Like @IlhanMN, I support dismantling the whole system of oppression.”

“Why is the GOP and FOX News so outraged? Because they want Americans to hate Black women, Muslims, and refugees more than the people in power benefitting from a system that causes the majority to suffer.”

Wisconsin Democrat Mark Pocan added: “Can someone explain why we must begin the work of dismantling the whole system of oppression wherever we find it” is controversial?

“It’s as if the GOP thinks systems of oppression…are good?
That being said, we are so lucky to have @IlhanMN in Congress—where she belongs.”

“I love how everything Ilhan says triggers the racists,” one Twitter user commented.

Last month Omar joined a chorus of voices calling for Minneapolis Police Department to be dismantld following Floyd’s death, calling it “rotten to the root”.

“A new way forward can’t be put in place if we have a department that is having a crisis of credibility, if we have a department that’s led by a chief who’s suited for racism, if we have a department that hasn’t solved half of the homicides,” Omar said on CNN’s “State of the Union” in June.

“And so, you can’t really form a department that is rotten to the root. What you can do is rebuild.”

“No one is saying that the community is not going to be kept safe. No one is saying crimes will not be investigated.””

  28. ‘Turkey won’t allow any YPG/PKK activities in N. Syria’

“Turkey will not allow any terror activities by YPG/PKK in northern Syria, the country’s National Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.

“No activities carried out in northern Syria by the YPG/PKK terror group with the dream of a terror corridor will be allowed,” it said on Twitter.

It said that “Turkey’s fight against terrorism will continue with determination” till the Turkish nation and its borders are safe, and peace and security is provided to the Syrian people.

Since 2016, Turkey has launched a trio of successful anti-terrorist operations across its border in northern Syria to prevent the formation of a terror corridor and enable peaceful settlement by locals: Euphrates Shield (2016), Olive Branch (2018), and Peace Spring (2019).

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK — listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and EU — has been responsible for the deaths of 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants. The YPG is PKK’s Syrian offshoot.”

  29. Italian arrested for spreading ISIS propaganda, saying Allah sent COVID

“A 38-year-old Italian man was arrested in Milan Wednesday for spreading ISIS propaganda and saying Allah sent to COVID pandemic.

Police said the man had been radicalised since 2015.

He allegedly urged social media followers to embrace global jihad against all infidels, police said.

He has been charged with instigation to commit a crime aggravated by using the Web.

Police arrested him after wiretapping his phone conversations and monitoring his social media use for months.

In an intercept on March 27, police said, the man claimed that the COVID emergency “is something from Allah, a positive thing”, because “people are going mad”.

The man allegedly argued that the crisis had helped cure people of “vices”.”
