A top ISIS commander has been captured by Iraqi special forces, the country’s national intelligence service has claimed.
Abdul Nasser Qirdash, once a candidate to replace Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as head of ISIS, was arrested on Wednesday.
He was head of one of the terror group’s top commissions and served under Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, who led one of the groups that preceded ISIS, they said.
He also helped command troops during the battle of Baghouz – ISIS’s last redoubt in Syria which was captured by Kurdish forces in March last year.
It is not clear how he was arrested, or where exactly the operation took place. Iraqi security services said only that they detained him based on ‘accurate intelligence’.
Initial reports in Iraq had suggested that ISIS’s top commander – a warlord with a similar name, Abdullah Qardash – was the one captured.
However, it now appears that security forces have backtracked on that claim.
ISIS’s leadership was thrown into turmoil in October last year after it confirmed that al-Baghdadi had been killed in a US raid on his compound in Idlib, Syria.
President Trump said at the time that Baghdadi ‘died like a dog’ by blowing himself up after getting cornered in an underground escape tunnel.
Three days later, Trump claimed US forces had killed the man in line to succeed Baghdadi, without putting forward a name.
While ISIS never confirmed the killing of a second-in-command figure, the US did confirm the killing of spokesman Abu al-Hassan al-Muhajir.
After Baghdadi’s death, ISIS announced that Muhammad al-Mawla, who also used the nom de guerre Abdullah Qardash, was to take over as the caliph.
A relative unknown until taking over the reins of what was then the world’s most-feared terror group, Qardash is believed to have been born in Iraqi before attending university – hence his nickname The Professor.
He then served in the army of Saddam Hussein before joining al-Qaeda as US forces invaded Iraq, and was imprisoned there for a time.
It was while in jail that he is believed to have met Baghdadi, who was then laying the groundwork for a successor group to Al-Qaeda that would morph into ISIS.
But following the fall of ISIS’s so-called caliphate and the splintering of the terror group into regional forces spread across the globe, it is unclear how much control Qardash retains over the organisation.

He said that it became clear that fanatics had infiltrated ISIS and gained the “upper hand.”
In addition, Qardash said that former ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, who had been killed by U.S. forces in 2019, had been a resolute leader who rarely changed his mind and who would cover up his faults rather than admit to them.
He added that the current ISIS Caliph is not as resolute as Al-Baghdadi had been.

Ex-SED politician elected to state constitutional court!
The election of left-wing politician Barbara Borchardt as constitutional judge in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is causing debate.
She is a member of the anti-capitalist left association within her party, which is monitored by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
She wanted to stay that way, Borchardt told the German Press Agency on May 19, 2020. The association was not observed in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
However, it appears in the 2018 Federal Constitution Protection Report.
Borchardt sees membership as unproblematic
In the daily newspaper “Die Welt” (edition of May 19, 2020) Borchardt said: “My membership in the anti-capitalist left does not conflict with my work as a constitutional judge, so I will not let my membership rest.” The goals of the AKL would not be in conflict with the Basic Law, because there is no basic capitalist order in it.
She does not fundamentally reject a break with capitalist ownership structures.

Afghanistan: Gunmen attack mosque in Parwan province killing at least 7
At least seven people were killed and 12 others wounded after gunmen stormed a mosque in Parwan Province on Tuesday, officials said.
As seen on Wednesday, the mosque in Khalal Zayee village still shows signs of the attack, like shattered glass, broken dishes, bullet holes and blood stains on the wall. Worshippers were offering evening prayers after breaking their Ramadan fast when the attack broke out.
“The gunmen arrived on two vehicles, they were in total 12 people who had heavy weapons too. Four gunmen open fire to kill the people,” told Ruptly a witness who was at the mosque.
The Afghan Interior Ministry blamed the attack on the Taliban, but the group denied responsibility.
The United Nations has warned of a “striking deterioration” of the violence in Afghanistan as, according to the UN, civilian casualties jumped to 380 in April.
Germany: Seehofer warns against ‘extremist’ infiltration of coronavirus lockdown protests
German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer appealed to those demonstrating against coronavirus lockdown measures to distance themselves from ‘extremists’ who may have infiltrated such movements. He made the comments in Berlin, on Wednesday, after a new cabinet committee to combat right-wing extremism and racism met for the first time.
“We have to make sure that extremists don’t get the upper hand here,” he stressed. He added that messages on the internet saying conditions are ripe for a “revolution” should be taken seriously.
He stressed that “this has nothing to do with the right to demonstrate as a peaceful and democratic people; these demonstrations are obviously being used by extremists for their own purposes.”
The new cabinet committee was created following the Hanau attack. Seehofer stated that extremism, racism and antisemitism “are the greatest threat to our security in Germany.”
The interior minister also said that a new catalogue of measures to combat extremism would be announced early next year.

Islam’s Sexual Fantasies

Speaking under the pseudonym of “Ella,” a British woman recently revealed that her Muslim rapists called her “a white wh*re, and a white b*tch,” during the more than 100 times she was raped in her youth by the mostly Pakistani grooming gang.
“We need to understand racially and religiously aggravated crime if we are going to prevent it and protect people from it and if we are going to prosecute correctly for it,” she said in her recent interview. “Prevention, protection and prosecution — all of them are being hindered because we are neglecting to properly address the religious and racist aspects of grooming gang crimes… It’s telling them that it’s OK to hate white people.”
That there are “racial” and “religious” aspects to the epidemic of Muslims raping Western European women cannot be overstated. Put differently, the males of a particular religion tend to fantasize that the females of a particular race are nymphomaniac masochists who are hot for being degraded and abused. Consider a few earlier examples:
Another British girl was “passed around like a piece of meat” among Muslim men who abused and raped her between the ages of 12 and 14. Speaking now as an adult, a court heard how she “was raped on a dirty mattress above a takeaway and forced to perform [oral] sex acts in a churchyard,” and how one of her abusers “urinated on her in an act of humiliation” afterwards.
Another British woman was trafficked to Morocco where she was prostituted and repeatedly raped by dozens of Muslim men. They “made me believe I was nothing more than a slut, a white whore,” she recollects. “They treated me like a leper, apart from when they wanted sex. I was less than human to them, I was rubbish.”
A Muslim man explained to another British woman why he was raping her: “you white women are good at it.”
A Muslim man called a 13-year-old virgin “a little white slag” — British slang for “loose, promiscuous woman” — before raping her.
In Germany, a group of Muslim “refugees” stalked a 25-year-old woman, hurled “filthy” insults at and taunted her for sex. They too explained their logic — “German girls are just there for sex” — before reaching into her blouse and groping her.
Another Muslim man who almost killed his 25-year-old German victim while raping her — and shouting “Allah!” — afterwards inquired if she liked it.
In Australia, a Muslim cabbie groped and insulted his female passengers, including by saying “All Australian women are sluts and deserve to be raped.”
In Austria, an “Arabic-looking man” approached a 27-year-old woman at a bus stop, pulled down his pants, and “all he could say was sex, sex, sex,” prompting the woman to scream and flee.
Even Dr. Taj Hargey, a British imam, confirms that the majority of the UK’s “imams promote grooming rings.” He said Muslim men are taught that women are “second-class citizens, little more than chattels or possessions over whom they have absolute authority” and that the imams preach a doctrine “that denigrates all women, but treats whites with particular contempt.”
For those acquainted with history, such Muslim behavior towards European women should be unsurprising — stretching, as it does, all the way back to the founder of Islam: In order to prompt his men to invade Byzantine territory — where the Arabs’ nearest European neighbors lived — the prophet Muhammad enticed them with the potential of sexually enslaving the “yellow” women (an apparent reference to their fair hair). It is “impossible to disconnect Islam from the Viking slave-trade,” M.A. Khan, a former Muslim, writes of later centuries, “because the supply was absolutely meant for meeting [the] Islamic world’s unceasing demand for the prized white slaves” and for “white sex-slaves.”
Moreover, just as Muslim rapists see Western women as “pieces of meat,” “nothing more than sluts,” and “white whores,” so did Islam’s earliest luminaries always describe European women, beginning with those nearest to them, of Byzantium. Thus, for Abu Uthman al-Jahiz (b. 776), a prolific court scholar, the females of Constantinople were the “most shameless women in the whole world… [T]hey find sex more enjoyable” and “are prone to adultery.” Abd al-Jabbar (b. 935), another prominent scholar, claimed that “adultery is commonplace in the cities and markets of Byzantium” — so much so that even “the nuns from the convents went out to the fortresses to offer themselves to monks.”
Several centuries later, in a written excerpt that goes to great (if not pornographic) lengths, Muhammad bin Hamed al-Isfahani (b. 1125), a celebrated Persian court scholar and poet, explained how he once saw a ship containing “three hundred lovely Frankish women, full of youth and beauty” arrive by sea. The flattery ends there and the fantasizing begins:
They glowed with ardour for carnal intercourse. They were all licentious harlots, proud and scornful, who took and gave, foul-fleshed and sinful… making love and selling themselves for gold… with nasal voices and fleshy thighs, blue-eyed and grey-eyed… They dedicated as a holy offering what they kept between their thighs… They maintained that they could make themselves acceptable to God by no better sacrifice than this… They made themselves targets for men’s darts.
After Saladin conquered Jerusalem from the Franks in 1187, this same Muhammad bin Hamed, who was present and aged 62, launched into yet another sadomasochistic tirade extolling the sexual debasement of European women and children — approximately eight-thousand of whom were enslaved:
How many well-guarded women were profaned, how many queens were ruled, and nubile girls married, and noble women given away, and miserly women forced to yield themselves, and women who had been kept hidden [nuns] stripped of their modesty… and free women occupied [meaning “penetrated”], and precious ones used for hard work, and pretty things put to the test, and virgins dishonoured and proud women deflowered… and happy ones made to weep! How many noblemen [Muslim lords] took them as concubines, how many ardent men blazed for one of them, and celibates were satisfied by them, and thirsty men sated by them, and turbulent men able to give vent to their passion. How many lovely women were the exclusive property of one man, how many great ladies were sold at low prices… and lofty ones abased… and those accustomed to thrones dragged down!
In short, past and present, not only have Muslim men had a “penchant” for European women; they have always justified this lust by portraying their victims as wanton nymphomaniacs, eager to be sexually debased.
Like many before and after her, “Ella” — this British woman who was repeatedly raped while being called “a white wh*re, and a white b*tch” — is, accordingly, correct to point out that this ongoing epidemic will continue “because we are neglecting to properly address the religious and racist aspects of grooming gang crimes.”

Videos shared via social media show a dark vehicle with its tires smoking, pushing a white sedan that had stopped at the traffic lights. After the white vehicle pulled away, the black one proceeded to plough into a shop that turned out to be a hijab store.
Police say that there’s no indication that the incident is terror-related. Those hurt were treated at the scene as their injuries are believed to be not life-threatening.
According to the emergency services, those who were injured in the store were mostly women, aged between 18 and 30.”

“However well-intentioned lockdowns are, doctors and researchers warn that a protracted isolation and anxiety stemming from measures to curb the pandemic may exert a higher toll than the virus itself.
Over 500 doctors have sent a joint letter to US President Donald Trump to raise the alarm about the potential negative health consequences of the coronavirus lockdown that could outweigh the benefits from keeping people indoors and preventing them from getting infected.
They called the nationwide shutdown a “mass casualty incident” which put millions of Americans at risk because they are being forced to miss routine screenings that could detect serious health conditions like cancer or prevent cases of stroke and heart attack.
“It is impossible to overstate the short, medium, and long-term harm to people’s health with a continued shutdown,” reads the letter, which was sent on Tuesday. “Losing a job is one of life’s most stressful events, and the effect on a person’s health is not lessened because it also has happened to 30 million other people.”
The doctors highlighted some of the adverse effects of the lockdown, such as soaring suicide hotline phone calls and liquor sales.
“The millions of casualties of a continued shutdown will be hiding in plain sight, but they will be called alcoholism, homelessness, suicide, heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure,” they wrote. “In youths it will be called financial instability, unemployment, despair, drug addiction, unplanned pregnancies, poverty, and abuse.”
Dr. Simone Gold, the lead organiser of the letter and co-founder of a doctors’ anti-lockdown group called A Doctor A Day, suggested that most efforts should have been focused on helping the most vulnerable portion of the population, rather than on trying to keep society ‘safe’ as a whole.
“There’s always exceptions,” she told Fox News. “But when you look at the pure numbers, it’s overwhelmingly patients who are in nursing homes and patients with serious underlying conditions. Meaning, that that’s where our resources should be spent.”
“I think it’s terribly unethical… part of the reason why we let [the virus] fly through the nursing homes is because we’re diverting resources across society at large. We have limited resources; we should put them where it’s killed people.”
Multiple studies have predicted that the coronavirus lockdown may have a hidden, indirect death toll. Research by the Well Being Trust published this month estimated that conditions largely stemming from the response to the coronavirus – such as unemployment, isolation and a feeling of uncertainty – could cause up to 75,000 deaths from alcohol or substance abuse and suicide.
Another study by the non-profit institute Just Facts concluded that anxiety caused by the pandemic will “destroy seven times more years of human life than can possibly be saved by lockdowns”.
With the economy in tatters and the growth of new cases and deaths reaching a plateau, most US governors have started to lift stay-at-home orders and reopen some businesses, although social distancing restrictions are expected to continue through the summer.
The United States is the worst-affected country in the world by the pandemic, with 1.55 million confirmed cases and 93,439 deaths as of Wednesday.”

Local fisherman Matt Coker explained to Mr Hughes more migrants sailing in dinghies into UK waters was typical now.
He said: “Unfortunately what you’ve seen today is very typical right now.
“It is happening more and more on days like this, when the weather is calm.”
All of the migrants were taken into Dover Harbour and then led to a makeshift immigration processing centre.
Mr Hughes explained the work of the UK Border Force on Thursday morning and how the events unfolded.
He said: “The Border Force vessel, Speedwell, was heading back into Dover when it got called to another rescue.
“It headed off to pick up another six migrants and entered Dover Harbour with 19 migrants on board.
“At the same time that this was happening the Dover lifeboat was out picking up two separate groups of migrants.”
Mr Hughes also explained he and his team counted 65 migrants but there may have been more.
He closed by saying: “Another significant day and really a repetition of what happened yesterday with some 64 migrants who crossed the Channel.
“The Home Secretary Priti Patel says they are investing more money and it is a top priority for them.
“They said the French are on board and as committed to stopping them from getting off the beaches in the first place.”
After explaining the event Mr Hughes also reflected on the reality of migrants attempting to cross via boat during the coronavirus crisis.
In a feature article, he wrote: “I was left with a sobering feeling, that all of this will probably happen again tomorrow.
“There’s no doubt that the European coronavirus lockdown has led to an increase in migrant channel crossings to the UK by boat.
“That’s because there are not many other options at the moment, with vehicle crossings down.
“This crisis was going on long before coronavirus began, and for all those involved, there’s no end in sight.””

“Ylva Johansson, European Commissioner for Home Affairs, has claimed that the European Union would be much “poorer” without mass migration and called for more legal paths for migrants to enter the bloc.
The Swedish politician made her remarks during an interview on Monday with the Friends of Europe think tank. This group has received thousands of euros in funding from Hungarian-American left-wing billionaire George Soros and his Open Society Foundations in the past.
“There are always right-wing extremists or racist and xenophobic forces that would like to describe migrants as something abnormal, that would like to describe migrants as ‘them’ or ‘they’, but that’s not true. Migration is normal. Migrants are here,” Johansson said.
Johansson argued that a third of the doctors in Sweden are born outside of the country, saying many of them were also born outside of the EU.
“In a normal year in the EU, we have around one million, one and a half million migrants coming regularly come to our union. And without them we would be a much, much poorer union,” she said and added that illegal migrants were only 200,000 per year.
Last year, France alone saw a record number of asylum claims, with the figure reported to be in the range of 138,000 migrants.
Several economic studies counter Johansson’s claim that Europe would be poorer without mass migration in recent years since the height of the 2015 migrant crisis.
A German study published in 2016 by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) in Nuremberg claimed that mass migration harms long-term economic growth due to migrants lacking skills or having foreign qualifications that do not meet European standards as well as language barriers.
A Swiss study published by the University of Basel in 2018 found that immigration may have short-term benefits for Western nations, but in the long term, the movement of people drains generous welfare systems.
Earlier this year, France’s parliament produced a report stating that mass migration has neither been a benefit nor harm to the economy, and had been largely neutral for France.
The study noted that the lack of economic benefit was due to the immigrant population being generally low skilled.
In Johansson’s native Sweden, the costs of immigration have been seen clearly when it comes to municipalities which took in too many migrants as they have been facing economic crises or even bankruptcy. One district, Bengtsfors, demanded cash from the national government last August just to stay afloat over the change of balance of its population.”

In southern Yemen, the virus-related death toll at a medical center run by an international aid group attests to “a wider catastrophe” in the war-torn country, Doctors Without Borders said.
The Iranian report carried by semiofficial news agencies, including ISNA, cited Deputy Health Minister Qassem Janbabaei, who did not elaborate. However, reports earlier in the week put the number of infected health care workers at only 800. Iran says more than 100 of those workers have died.
Iran on Thursday put the total number of dead from the virus at 7,249, or 66 more than Wednesday. Health Ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour said there were more than 129,000 confirmed cases of the virus, including 2,392 more than Wednesday.

“Hungary’s government said Thursday that it is shutting down the transit zones on its southern border with Serbia where asylum-seekers have been held while their asylum requests are decided.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s chief of staff said that, as a result, some 280 asylum-seekers will be moved Thursday to reception centers in the country.
Gergely Gulyas also said that, in the future, those seeking to apply for asylum in Hungary will have to present their claims at Hungarian diplomatic missions in other countries.
The government decision comes after the European Union’s top court last week ruled that holding asylum-seekers in Hungary’s transit zones amounted to “detention” and said it was allowed for a maximum period of four weeks.
The zones had been compared by the government to the transit areas of airports, where passengers remain if they are changing planes but not entering the country. The reception centers, by contrast, are open, or semi-open.
“The government does not agree with the court’s decision, which it considers to be risky and damaging in terms of Europe’s security,” Gulyas said. “At the same time, as a member of the European Union, naturally we are obliged to comply with every court decision and we will comply.”
“We think that the transit zone was a solution that guaranteed the possibility of filing asylum requests while at the same time it protected Hungary’s borders and, therefore, Europe’s external borders, as well.” Gulyas said during a government news conference. “The protection of the external borders is an issue in which Hungary cannot, does not want to and will not yield.”
Gulyas pointed out that while the EU’s Court of Justice considered holding asylum-seekers in the transit zones as detention, a November 2019 judgement by the European Court of Human Rights had reached a different conclusion, saying that the policy did not constitute a deprivation of the “right to liberty and security.”
Hungary built fences protected by razor wire on its southern borders with Serbia and Croatia and later a pair of transit zones on its border with Serbia in the wake of the 2015 migrant crisis, when some 400,000 people passed through Hungary on their way to Western Europe.
The measures were part of Orban’s increasingly strict anti-immigration policies and the extreme minimization of Hungary’s asylum system.
The transit zones built from shipping containers were a frequent target for widespread criticism from domestic and international rights groups.
They objected, for example, to the small number of asylum-seekers allowed to file claims, the prison-like conditions faced by those kept in the transit zones — including families with small children — and Hungary’s frequent decision not to provide food to adults whose initial asylum claims were rejected but who remained in the transit zones while their appeals were heard.
The decision to close the transit zones was welcomed by the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, an advocate for asylum-seekers which was involved in the landmark case decided last week by the EU’s Court of Justice and which has been the target of government smear campaigns.
“We have achieved the end of the unlawful torment of hundreds, including many families with children and single women,” the group said in a Facebook post.
“Our urgent and important task now is to give legal information to the people freed from their prison and to help them understand what awaits them in the new camps and what rules of behavior they have to abide by in the new locations,” the committee said. “We will also help them to get the chance for the authorities to finally consider their asylum requests.””

“A Czech appeals court on Thursday upheld a lower court ruling that convicted a former Prague Muslim leader of being part of a terror group and financing terrorism, sentencing him to 10 years in prison.
Prosecutors said imam Samer Shehadeh helped his brother Omar in 2016 and later his brother’s wife, Fatima Hudkova, travel to Syria to join an extremist group known as Jabhat Fateh al-Sham.
Prosecutors also said Shehadeh sent unspecified sums of money to the group that seeks to replace the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad with an Islamic state.
In the same case, Omar and his wife were convicted of terror charges and received prison terms of 11 and six years, respectively. The appeals court also upheld their sentences.
Shehadeh didn’t deny the accusations, but said he didn’t consider his deeds a crime because he doesn’t recognize the Syrian government and doesn’t consider the group terrorist.
Thursday’s verdict by Prague’s High Court is final.

“Casualties at the hands of jihadis during the first three weeks of Ramadan hit a grim milestone, exceeding 1,000 with 584 fatalities and 587 injuries, data compiled by Breitbart News shows.
This report covers April 24, the first full day of the holy month, through May 14. On average, Islamic terrorists killed about 28 people and injured an estimated 28 others during that three-week period. There were an estimated 56 casualties, which include fatalities and injuries, each day.
Islamic terrorist attacks have continued seemingly undeterred during Ramadan despite the ongoing Chinese coronavirus pandemic and the associated lockdowns.
Jihadis from the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL), the second deadliest-group during the holiest month for Muslims, have reportedly dubbed their efforts the “Battle of Ramadan.”
This year, the number of casualties, which includes deaths and injuries, is on pace to exceed those from 2019.
The 1,171 casualties (584 fatalities, 587 injuries) during the first three weeks of the holy month have already surpassed the 1,087 (531 fatalities, 556 injuries) during the same period last year by about ten percent.
The Afghan Taliban remains the bloodiest and most prolific group, with 76 attacks (264 deaths, 278 injuries). Taliban narco-jihadis are responsible for about half all the attacks and casualties, respectively.
During Ramadan’s ongoing month, there have been 164 attacks in 18 countries, the vast majority in Afghanistan.
Despite the fall of its so-called caliphate early last year, ISIS continues to wreak havoc in what some monitor groups and news outlets have described as a potential resurgence, mainly in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.
ISIS is the second-deadliest terrorist group during Ramadan, responsible for the most bloody single-day attack (32 fatalities, 133 injuries), which took place at a funeral in Afghanistan on May 12.
In the last few weeks, the group has carried out some of the deadliest attacks in months in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This week’s count covers the heinous attack on a maternity ward in the Afghan capital of Kabul that left at least 24 people dead, including mothers and newborns, and 16 people injured. While the U.S. blames ISIS’s wing in Afghanistan for the attack, Kabul blames the Taliban. Breitbart News’ Ramadan count did not assign the responsibility for the attack to either group, but as both potential culprits subscribe to jihadist ideology, the attack is almost certainly jihadist in nature.
Early this year, the United States and the Taliban signed a preliminary agreement to pave the way for intra-Afghan negotiations and the withdrawal of U.S.-led foreign forces.
The vast majority of the victims of the Ramadan attacks are Muslims.
Breitbart News recorded some attacks by militants from unknown groups using Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) in areas within the Sahel region of Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Syria, known to be jihadi hotbeds. IED is a preferred weapon of jihadis, known to urge their members and supporters to engage in jihad on Ramadan, believing that martyrs will get extra rewards in paradise.
Despite these attempts, violence is entirely dissonant with Ramadan for most Muslims. Most of them follow the tradition of abstaining from eating, drinking, smoking, having sex, and other physical needs each day, starting from before the break of dawn until sunset during Ramadan.
Breitbart News primarily gleans its tally from the Religion of Peace website and the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED) in coordination with news and government reports.
This report only includes incidents where Breitbart News has corroborated those reports and online entities that monitor jihadi activity. It also omits attacks where the jihadist nature of the perpetrators is not clear, including attacks where no group has taken responsibility in an area where terrorists of non-jihadist ideologies are also present.
The overall number of attacks and the associated casualties could be higher, given that Breitbart News is not able to confirm all incidents. Moreover, monitor groups do not document all terror events online. Death and injury figures may change as some victims succumb to their wounds.
For the most part, the tally excludes casualties suffered by jihadis. Some of the documented incidents in Syria may inadvertently include deaths and injuries sustained by rebel groups with Islamic terrorist ties.

Bodycam Shows Seattle Police Officers Shooting Suspect Armed With Knife
On Tuesday, at about 3:20PM, Seattle police officers responded to several 911 calls reporting that a man was brandishing knives at the intersection of West Harrison Street and Elliott Avenue West.
Callers further stated that the subject was chasing and threatening people. After a Taser deployment, two officers fired their service weapons, striking the man.
Officers provided first aid to the subject until Seattle Fire Department Medics arrived.
Medics pronounced the man deceased at the scene.
New EU migration pact set for start of summer
The European Commission is set to reveal its new pact on migration and asylum sometime in June.
“I do hope that we will be able to present it in the beginning of the summer,” said European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson on Monday (18 May).
But speaking at a videoconference organised by the Brussels-based think tank Friends of Europe, Johansson suggested that the most contentious aspects of asylum in the new pact have yet to resolved.
Among those are issues dealing with the distribution of arriving asylum seekers across member states, from those in which they arrive.
The commission’s proposal in 2016 demanded an automated system based on quotas – triggering revolt from EU states like Poland and Hungary.
Asked if such a system would make it into the new pact, Johansson remained elusive.
“I am more optimistic to find a solution now compared to when I started my travelling around capitals and my dialogue with member states,” she said.
Johansson did offer some other clues. She said there would be a big focus on process when it comes to distinguishing between those who deserve asylum and those who do not.
“In my new proposal there is a going to big distinction, a more stressed distinction between those who are eligible to stay and those who are not,” she said, adding returns of failed applicants have to be swifter and more efficient.
She also spoke about legal pathways to enter Europe and floated the idea of having NGOs or local communities to sponsor refugees as part of a wider resettlement programme.
“Every year between one and one-half million people arrive in the European Union regularly as migrants and this is what we should strengthen,” she said, noting in comparison that around 200,000 arrive irregularly.
‘Us vs Them’?
The politics surrounding migration remains entrenched following the arrival of some one million people in 2015. Most at the time had been waved through by Hungary. Budapest even organised buses to take people to Austria, where many then spread out into Germany and further north into Sweden.
The European Commission in 2016 then proposed to reform EU-wide asylum laws but met stiff resistance from member states. Hungary and Poland, among others, balked at the idea of requiring them to take in asylum seekers that landed on the shores of Greece or Italy.
Johansson has since been tasked to come up with new ideas and new plans to create the so-called Common European Asylum System. Her cautious optimism for a result underscores the often toxic politics that shroud migration and asylum, regularly turning it into a numbers game.
In April, the number of people detected slipping through borders along Europe’s main migratory routes fell to lowest level since 2009 mostly because of Covid-19.
But the failure of the European Union to get a handle of the hotspots on the Greek islands, where tens of thousands languish away in deplorable conditions, is also a stark reminder of how it delegates legal responsibility onto someone else.
Still, Johansson insisted that her new approach also aims to create a new narrative on migration and its policies.
“They are part of us, they are part of we,” she said, noting the role many migrants play in fighting the pandemic throughout the European Union.

FBI Now Investigating NAS Corpus Christi Shooting, ‘Arab Male’ Killed by Navy Security Forces
The FBI is investigating a Thursday shooting at a Texas naval air station, after a Navy security team there killed an “Arab male” who stormed a gate at the base, a U.S. official told USNI News..
NSF responded to an active shooter at NAS Corpus Christi at about 7:15 a.m. EST resulting in the injury to the NSF sailor. The shooter was killed by the NSF forces, the official told USNI News.
“The sailor is in good condition and is expected to be released later today,” the Navy said in a statement.
The base remains on lockdown while an investigation into the shooting commences.
An FBI spokeswoman did not provide additional details when contacted by USNI News.
“All gates on the installation remain closed while first responders process the scene,” according to a statement from the service.
“NCIS, state and local law enforcement are on scene.”
Corpus Christi police said the incident took place at one of the air station’s gates.
Naval Air Station Corpus Christi is home to the four squadrons of Training Air Wing Four, which uses Truax Field on base and outlying airfields. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and foreign student pilots train at the base.
Naval Air Station Corpus Christi also houses the Corpus Christi Army Depot which serves as the primary maintenance depot for Department of Defense rotary-wing aircraft. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Service also operates from Naval Air Station Corpus Christi.
