Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has called on countries to concentrate on practical cooperation in grappling with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking at a POLITICO online event on Wednesday, he urged governments to tackle nationalism, describing the current debates between “globalisers and non-globalisers” as a distraction which hampers the fight against the virus.
The ex-UK prime minister claimed that the UN Security Council is “not really representative of the world today”, also referring to the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s bureaucracy which Blair said should be streamlined.
He urged member countries to give the WHO “much greater heft and weight”, because otherwise, it’s “unfair to criticise them” for adhering to the limited mission that was set by national governments.

In this context, the former British PM stressed that Western leaders should recognise China’s new “dominant position” in the world and that the Trump administration needs to act “strategically” when it comes to Sino-American relations.
Blair criticised “a series of ad-hoc reactions of a transactional nature”, adding that “the days of framing the relationship in terms of individual issues like the coronavirus pandemic or Huawei technology” are over.
He called for an understanding of China “from the Chinese point of view”, but said Beijing should be “a predictable and responsible partner” given the “massive economic interconnections” between the country and the rest of the world.
According to the former UK prime minister, the Chinese government has “serious questions to answer about the origins of this [COVID-19] crisis”.
Separately, Blair touched upon ways to wrap up national coronavirus lockdowns, claiming that a swift re-opening of economies would only work with a deep “infrastructure of containment”, as well as “defined metrics and thresholds for moving between levels” of confinement measures…”

The Muslim Brotherhood’s network has in the shadow of the coronavirus crisis forged collaborations with the Swedish Armed Forces’ civil organisations, blogger and journalist Johan Westerholm, the author of “Islamism in Sweden”, has claimed.
In his opinion piece on the portal Ledarsidorna, Westerholm cited a recent defence collaboration project featuring, among others, Ibn Rushd, a controversial Swedish educational organisation identified by the country’s Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) as having strong ties with the Muslim Brotherhood.
The project in question is “For your safety”, a free digital training course on crisis preparedness provided by the Defence Trainers, a nationwide voluntary defence organisation that carries out training and recruiting and strengthens emergency preparedness, and Huddinge Municipality in Stockholm County. The course includes three 15-minute films subtitled in Arabic, Kurdish, and Turkish. Apart from Ibn Rushd, other collaborations include the Workers’ Educational Association (ABF) and the Swedish Church.
According to Westerholm, who previously served as an intelligence officer, this indicates a “high organisational level” of the Muslim Brotherhood*, its “communicative skills” and a “capacity that has been built up over a long period of time”.
Westerholm described Ibn Rushd as a “network organisation” of the Muslim Brotherhood. The municipality of Eskilstuna has recently stopped all payments to the student union Ibn Rushd, citing its ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. The organisation denied the allegations as “Islamophopic conspiracy theories”.
Westerholm cited several reports that concluded Ibn Rushd from its founding onwards rested on the Brotherhood’s ideological and theological interpretation of the Quran, and raised concerns about Ibn Rushd’s history of inviting hate preachers, its problematic ties, and adverse public image. Also in late 2019, two senior Swedish researchers and associate professors Magnus Ranstorp and Aje Carlbom sounded the alarm over Islamic parallel societies being indirectly funded through taxpayer money. Among others, they highlighted the example of Ibn Rushd, which received an annual SEK 23 million (roughly $2.3 million) grant from the Adult Education Council (FR). According to researchers, it promotes “insitutionalised segregation” by specifically targeting marginalised Muslims from vulnerable neighbourhoods.
“The fact that the Muslim Brotherhood is now taking the opportunity to strengthen its position in civil society together with the Swedish Church is something that is not surprising. This is partly because the government has now been under pressure to remove the requirements for self-financing of aid projects, but also through the cooperation with the Swedish Church”, Westerholm wrote.
According to Westerholm, the corona crisis provides an opportunity for the Muslim Brotherhood to “establish itself in various social functions”.
“It can now be considered to have started establishing itself in the Swedish Armed Forces’ civil society organisations and thus in the country’s total defence”, Westerholm concluded.
Ibn Rushd is a Swedish study association formed in 2001 with a focus on the Arabic language and religious studies. Since 2008 the union has been receiving state grants. The organisation derives its name from an Andalusian scholar, whose name is often latinised as Averroes.
Founded in Egypt in 1928, the Muslim Brotherhood has fledged into a pan-Islamic organisation with over a million members in 70 countries. It is regarded as a terrorist organisation in many countries, including Russia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. In Sweden, the MB has been active since the late 1970s.

“A shipment of personal protective equipment (PPE) rushed to the UK arrived from Turkey turned out to “not be of the quality that we feel is good enough for our frontline staff”, a minister admitted on Wednesday.
The 84-tonne shipment, including 400,000 medical gowns, has been impounded in a government warehouse near Heathrow Airport in west London, the Daily Telegraph reports.
Ministers secured a substantial supply of gowns from Turkey, which, after an initial delay, arrived on 22 April, as Breitbart News reported.
“We believed this equipment was going to be of the right standard, but when our experts here tested it, they found it wasn’t,” Cabinet Minister Brandon Lewis told Sky News.
“All the PPE that we acquire, we expect it to be of a standard that we set out when we purchase it.”
Lewis would not comment on whether the consignment should have been checked before it left Turkey, but acknowledged “in this instance some of it has turned out not to be good enough.”
He also refused to disclose how much money was spent on them, but said it is “reassuring that our experts are very focused on ensuring the best quality of equipment”.

A graffiti that rightly causes a stir. The words “Christians must die” can be spotted at the train stop in the Austrian Traisen-Markt. Above it, in the same style, the words “Allach Akkbar”. The removal of the graffiti has already been initiated and will cost about 500 Euro.

“Despite the continuing coronavirus outbreak, Italy has seen a surge in migrants at its northern border and on the island of Lampedusa, which is becoming overwhelmed, authorities say.
Lampedusa saw at least 200 migrants arrive in two days, with three landings taking place in the span of just a few hours between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
The 200 migrants join another 100 or so that have been staying on the Favaloro pier for the past two days, La Repubblica reports.
The 183 migrants picked up by the German-based migrant transport NGO Sea-Eye and the Spain-based NGO Salvamento Marítimo Humanitario were also released from their quarantine this week. The migrants will be redistributed to other European Union countries in the coming weeks.
Another 118 migrants are still under quarantine just miles off Lampedusa, while 60 migrants were also recently picked up in the search and rescue zone of Malta.
The Italian coastguard detained the Sea-Eye’s ship, the Alan Kurdi, this week in Palermo. They said there were “several irregularities of a technical and operational nature such as to compromise not only the safety of the crews but also of the people who have been and who could be recovered on board”.
Italy’s northern land border with Slovenia has also seen migrants cross into the country. Edoardo Alessio, Provincial Secretary-General of the Italian State Police, claimed Slovenia does not stop migrants from heading across the border.
“Slovenia does not stop them, does not identify them, and lets them pass with impunity,” Mr Alessio said and added: “The rise of migrants from the Slovenian Karst area to Trieste continues undeterred.”
“Despite the lockdown, which forces citizens to stay at home and closed the borders, trafficking in human beings has continued for almost the two months of the lockdown,” he added.
Alessio went on to add that ahead of the summer months, the Italian government should reinforce the border in case of a surge of migrants occurs along the Balkan route. In the past ten days, 250 illegal immigrants have arrived in Italy along the Slovenian border area.”

Greece: Protesters damage hotels set to host migrants in Pella region
Protesters caused havoc in the Greek towns of Panagitsa and Arnissa on Wednesday by damaging two hotels after discovering that both would reportedly host over 50 migrants each.
Damaged and destroyed rooms of the Hotel Panagitsa and Arnissa’s Hotel Agnanti where the refugees were supposed to be housed can be seen in the footage. Police later confirmed that around 150 protesters had also attempted to prevent the buses transporting the migrants to the hotels.
“The incidents that happened are condemned by our whole society and we believe that this wasn’t done by Panagitsa citizens,” said Panagitsa Community President, Androniki Parthenopoulou.
“I believe we don’t want any more people, we have enough already with the existing ones,” said local, Eftyhia.

“A second member of a left-wing popular folk music group that is banned in Turkey has died of a hunger strike in protest of the government’s crackdown on the band, the group said Thursday on its Twitter account.
Grup Yorum said bass guitarist Ibrahim Gokcek, 41, died in a hospital in Istanbul. He was placed in intensive care after he abandoned his hunger strike two days ago. He had been fasting for 323 days prior to that.
The group’s singer, 28-year-old Helin Bolek, lost her life on April 3, on the 288th day of her hunger strike. Hunger strikers in Turkey traditionally refuse food but consume liquids and take vitamins that prolong their protests.
Grup Yorum, formed in Istanbul in 1985, is known for its protest songs and is composed of rotating band members. It has been prohibited from performing in Turkey since 2016, and authorities have jailed some of its members.
The government accuses Grup Yorum of links to the outlawed Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front, or DHKP/C. The militant group is designated a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
Gokcek and Bolek had embarked on the hunger strike while in prison last year to press the government to lift the ban and free detained band members.
They were released in November, but continued the protest to demand that Grup Yorum be allowed to resume concerts, that other jailed band members be released and that lawsuits against the group be dropped.

Coronavirus survivors banned from joining the military
As the Defense Department negotiates its way through the coronavirus pandemic and its fallout, military entrance processing stations are working with new guidance when it comes to bringing COVID-19 survivors into the services.
A past COVID-19 diagnosis is a no-go for processing, according to a recently released MEPCOM memo circulating on Twitter.
“During the medical history interview or examination, a history of COVID-19, confirmed by either a laboratory test or a clinician diagnosis, is permanently disqualifying …” the memo reads.

The memo is authentic, Pentagon spokeswoman Jessica Maxwell confirmed to Military Times.
Specifically, it lays out guidelines for MEPS staff to deal with potential, as well as confirmed, coronavirus cases. That starts with screening at all MEPS, which includes taking a temperature and answering questions about symptoms and potential contact.
If an applicant fails screening, according to the memo, they won’t be tested, but they can return in 14 days if they’re symptom-free. Anyone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 will have to wait until 28 days after diagnosis to report to MEPS.

JUDGE GRANTS PRELIMINARY INJUNCTION IN SAF ACTION v. MASS. GOV. BAKER
A U.S. District Court in Massachusetts has granted a preliminary injunction against Gov. Charlie Baker’s emergency order shutting down gun shops in the state in a case brought by the Second Amendment Foundation, Firearms Policy Coalition and Commonwealth Second Amendment, Inc.
The lawsuit was filed April 9 and the case is known as McCarthy v. Baker. In reaction to the coronavirus outbreak, Gov. Baker issued an emergency order that, according to the federal complaint, eliminated “all lawful channels of access to constitutionally protected arms and ammunition by mandating the closure of all businesses that sell firearms and ammunition to the consumer public. These actions amount to a ban on obtaining modern arms for personal defense in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.”
“We are delighted at the decision by U.S. District Judge Douglas P. Woodlock and the swiftness with which it was reached,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “Constitutional rights are never put on hold because of an emergency, including the outbreak of a virus. Too many elected officials think otherwise, and we’re having to deal with them one lawsuit a time, same as we’re taking on Governor Baker.”

Texas Supreme Court orders Dallas salon owner released as Abbott bans jailing citizens for lockdown violations
The Texas Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the release of salon owner Shelley Luther, who was jailed for opening in violation of the state’s rules, as Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order retroactively eliminating jail time as a consequence for violating the state’s coronavirus restrictions.
Shortly after Abbott’s announcement, the Supreme Court of Texas ordered Luther’s release. An attorney for Luther, who is with her at the jail, told Fox News they don’t know the timing yet of when she will be freed.

It was a striking scene made possible by the state’s open-carry law, and it worried many of the politicians present. Now, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer wants to change the law to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
“There are legislators who are wearing bulletproof vests to go to work,” Whitmer said in an interview with NBC on Wednesday. “No one should be intimidated by someone who’s bringing in an assault rifle into their workplace. And so there is conversation about changing that law. I think it’s long overdue, and I absolutely support that change. You shouldn’t be intimidated going to be the voice of the people who elected you.”
