This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

    No. This is the first I’ve heard of it. Maybe China feels they’ve had a great victory shutting down the entirety of the world’s economy so now they plan on taking advantage of the situation in NK now that Rocket Boy is either dead or a veggie.

    • Reality check. That pair own a chain of urgent care clinics. I respect their opinion, but they aren’t adequately disclosing their biases. They are in Bakersfield. They are urgent care docs, not ER docs. Find an urban ER doc who says similar to get the right persuasive edge.
      Was just talking to a friend on W Coast whose neighbor has spent a month recovering after apparently getting the WuFlu from a prolonged discussion prior to a lung xray diagnosis of an ER patient. This doc had used her last PPE with the previous patient as that one had recently traveled. Adequate PPE supplies need to be a step to returning to normal.

  4. I didn’t know the Geneva Convention was against the victor settling lands captured by war. Without knowing the full rationale behind this, I can imagine the good arguments. Noble, virtuous losers may have been forced into fighting, and losing territory, forfeiting spoils under unfair conditions beyond their control. Had this rule been made historically retroactive I am sure our world map would look substantially different. Somehow, however, I think this example doesn’t apply:

    • Its funny how leftism in particular depends on starting history just at the right moment for them. Go to an anti-Israel protest with a T shirt that says, “Free Constantinople” and see how that goes.

      While the example isn’t perfect in terms of reality, its 100% accurate in terms of the leftist arguments against Israel’s existence. But in both cases, Israel and Constantinople rightfully are not islamic lands and should never be allowed to be so.

      Then again for that matter, neither should the city of Medina, which Mohammad conquered when it was the Jewish homesteaded city of Yathrib.

  7. My kids have a universal basic income income right now. It’s called Daddy-o. Locked up, it is a constant struggle to motivate, cajole, urge and convince them to get off their sedentary arses. In other words they are pretty normal children. Extending such a subsidy to a whole country is a socialist disincentive to a productive life and encouragement to stay inert.

    • Government funding of the arts also cuts the consumer out of the picture, instead of the art consumer deciding what is worth funding bureaucrats decide based on their political agenda. This means that the majority of tax payers are being forced (by the power of the government) to fund art they don’t like and will never purchase or patronize. This is an insidious evil that indoctrinates the tax payer to let the government bureaucrats decide how their money should be spent.

      • It is infuriating that artists who have to find their own work, attract their own audiences, pay for their own halls or rehearsal space etc. etc. etc. have to pay tax to pay for their own competition that doesn’t have to do any of those things.

        All public funding to the arts should stop.

        In terms of Canada and CanCon, maybe if the government offered a tax reduction to broadcasters (not a subsidy) who found Canadian talent and used it, that might be a sort of middle solution. But government shouldn’t decide what is true, or what is good art.

    “April, India’s apex medical research lab asked states to stop using COVID-19 rapid testing kits obtained from two Chinese suppliers, Wondfo Biotech and Zhuhai Livzon Diagnostics, after they showed a variation in field condition results. India also cancelled orders for around half a million rapid testing kits from China.

    The Chinese Embassy in New Delhi has expressed “deep concern” over the evaluation results and the decision made by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to stop using the rapid testing kits after their results varied.

    The Chinese embassy in New Delhi, while issuing a statement on Monday night, said that these kits from the same manufacturers have been exported to many countries in Asia, Europe and Latin America after receiving certification from the National Medical Products Administration of China (NMPA).

    “It is unfair and irresponsible for certain individuals to label Chinese products as ‘faulty’ and look at issues with preemptive prejudice. Regarding the current issue occurred, we hope the Indian side could respect China’s goodwill and sincerity, strengthen communication timely with relevant Chinese companies based on facts, and resolve it reasonably and properly,” Ji Rong, spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi said.

    The Chinese side suspects that Indian professionals may not be following the required protocol outlined by the companies, namely Biomedemics and Wondfo, as other countries did not filed any complaints regarding quality so far.

    “Any operation which is not carried out by professionals in accordance with the product specifications will lead to the testing accuracy variations,” said the Spokesperson.

    Manufacturer Wondfo also made a strong statement on Tuesday, saying that it is “surprised and disappointed” by the decision made by ICMR on Monday (27 April).
    The Chinese manufacturer has claimed that the Wondfo SARS-CoV-2 Anti-body test was one of the first tests to receive an import licence from India after validation from country’s National Institute of Virology.

    “We are currently investigating the ICMR’s concerns with our products,” the statement issued by Wondfo reads.

    Earlier on Monday, the Indian health ministry cancelled the procurement of the rapid anti-body test kits due to a variation in results.

    “After receipt of some supplies, ICMR has again conducted quality checks on these kits in field conditions. Based on a scientific assessment of their performance, the order in question (Wondfo) along with another order with respect to another brand found under-performing, have been cancelled,” the ministry said.

    However, the ministry stressed that ICMR has not made any payment whatsoever with respect to these supplies. “Because of the due process followed (to not pursue procurement with 100% advance payment), the Government of India does not stand to lose a single rupee,” it added.

    So far, a total of 716,733 people have been tested in India of which 29,435 were found coronavirus-positive. The country has recorded 934 deaths due to COVID-19.”

    One day in the Channel: another three dozen foreign nationals attempted to gain illegal entry to the UK – and with the help of the UK Border Farce, they succeeded.

    ?On 7 February a record 102 migrants were intercepted while crossing the English Channel – the largest number of such incidents in any one day.

    The migrants – from Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India – were detained upon reaching the English coast from France.

    Despite the coronavirus crisis small boats have continued to operate in the Straits of Dover throughout March and April.

    The Daily Telegraph reported on 24 April that since 23 March – when the coronavirus lockdown began – 558 migrants have left France and made it across the Channel, a record for a single month…”

    The number of shootings is increasing in Sweden, despite a national effort to curtail gang violence amid the ongoing coronavirus epidemic, SVT reported.

    While a total of 15 people have been shot dead in the country of over 10 million between 1 January and 15 April this year, which is fully comparable with the corresponding period last year, the overall number of shootings and injuries, at 86 and 32 respectively, has increased.

    This adverse trend continues despite a national crackdown on gang violence, “Operation Hoarfrost” being underway. Its stated goal is to reduce gangland violence by putting criminal gangs under pressure.

    “I can say with certainty that we have prevented serious violent crimes, so I say that we have reduced the deadly violence,” Stefan Hector, national commander of Operation Hoarfrost, told SVT.

    The police also noted that the raging coronavirus epidemic, contrary to some people’s expectations, has not had a major impact on crime. This is likely due to the fact that Sweden, unlike most European nations, has consistently avoided lockdowns. Even the flow of drugs has not been disturbed to any great extent, the police said. However, there is still a risk that reduced access to drugs may increase violence.

    “We have seen a tendency that in cases where the supply of drugs has decreased, we have begun to witness extortion as a method of getting money into the criminal environment. And this is usually carried out through violence,” Stefan Hector said.
    The ongoing pandemic has left Sweden the most-affected Scandinavian nation, with nearly 19,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and nearly 2,300 deaths.

    In recent years, bombings and shootings have regularly disrupted the country’s largest cities, such as Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö, so much so that locals have become accustomed to it. Even Swedish Police Chief Anders Thornberg called the gangland violence “the new normal” and told his compatriots to “get used to it”. According to him, the deadly shootings are closely related to drug trafficking.

    A 2018 study suggested that the risk of becoming the victim of firearm violence has increased five-fold since 1996, which has been blamed on too little crime prevention work. The same study concluded that the extent firearm violence in Sweden is ten times larger than in Germany.”

    “A leaked internal police memo in the northern department of Calvados told officers to limit their interventions to only serious crimes in Muslim areas during Ramadan.

    The note, which was sent out on April 24th and came from the chief of staff of the Central Directorate of Public Security (DDSP) of Calvados, calls for officers to not intervene in certain districts.

    “Unless there is a risk of harm to persons or serious damage to property (damage by means dangerous for people, buildings, or vehicles), there is no need to intervene in neighbourhoods with a high concentration of populations following Ramadan, to raise a fuss, or to impose controls on groups of people gathered after sunset to eat,” the note states.

    The DDSP note goes on to say that officers should exercise caution “in order to prevent a breach of the confinement rules from degenerating and causing a greater disturbance of urban violence”, Le Parisien reports.

    Fabien Vanhemelryck, the secretary of the Alliance Police Union, criticised the leaked memo, telling the newspaper: “Contrary to what has been said and repeated by the government, this note proves that the police are therefore well-instructed not to go to certain places!”

    The leak comes after multiple “vulnerable” neighbourhoods across France erupted into riots for several days and saw attacks on police and firefighters as well as several arson attacks despite the Wuhan coronavirus lockdowns.

    In the department of Yvelines, police claim to have been attacked nearly daily for at least two weeks by local youths in troubled neighbourhoods. Several of the incidents required officers to deploy stun grenades to escape the mobs.

    The lockdown has heavily affected illegal drug trafficking in areas across France, which has led to concerns that violence may be looming on the horizon as a result.

    “If the supply does not start again, and if the confinement lasts longer, it could become hot in certain cities,” a police investigator said earlier this month.”

    “A 29-year-old Frenchman who claimed allegiance to the Islamic State group is facing possible terrorism charges after he rammed his car into police, injuring three officers.

    The incident occurred Monday in the northwestern Paris suburb of Colombes, while police were conducting an ID check. The driver slammed into police cars and police motorcycles, sending three officers to the hospital, the national counter-terrorism prosecution office said in a statement Tuesday.

    The driver was arrested, and investigators found a knife in his car along with a letter pledging allegiance to IS and claiming to want to impose Islamic sharia law around the world, the statement said.

    Counter-terrorism prosecutors decided to take over the investigation after the driver underwent a psychological examination Tuesday and was found to be of sound mind.

    The man, who was not identified, is facing possible charges of links to criminal terrorism and attempted killing of officers in connection with a terrorist enterprise, the statement said.

    More than 200 people were killed around France in Islamic State attacks in 2015 and 2016, and police and soldiers have been repeatedly targeted by violent extremists.

    Police have stepped up street controls since France imposed nationwide confinement measures last month to fight the coronavirus pandemic.”

According to their data, the death rate of the coronavirus is similar in prevalence to the flu. And they believe only the sick and elderly should be quarantined and that businesses should open. They also revealed that the state of California is pressuring doctors to pad the COVID-19 numbers.

      YouTube has censored a viral video in which two doctors criticized the logic of whether California’s stay-at-home coronavirus order is necessary.

      The video, which had racked up over 5 million views, featured Dr. Dan Erickson and Dr. Artin Massihi, co-owners of Accelerated Urgent Care in Bakersfield, Calif.

      In the clip, Erickson asserts that there is only a “0.03 chance of dying from COVID in the state of California,” prompting him to ask, “Does that necessitate sheltering in place? Does that necessitate shutting down medical systems? Does that necessitate people being out of work?”

      Erickson also asked why fatalities were being counted as COVID-19 deaths when other ailments were actually more to blame.

      “When someone dies in this country right now, they’re not talking about the high blood pressure, the diabetes, the stroke. They’re saying ‘Did they die from COVID?’” Erickson said. “We’ve been to hundreds of autopsies. You don’t talk about one thing, you talk about comorbidities. ER doctors now [say] ‘It’s interesting when I’m writing about my death report, I’m being pressured to add COVID. Why is that?”

      The video was deleted late last night for “violating YouTube’s terms of service.”

      Earlier this month, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki told CNN that the company would ban any video content that contradicted World Health Organization recommendations.

      However, Wojcicki suggested that this would mainly be focused on banning information about fake cures, not questioning of government policy.

      The video platform has also set about banning any content that claims 5G cell towers are linked to the coronavirus outbreak.

      During an appearance on Fox News last night, Dr. Erickson pointed to Sweden, which didn’t impose any drastic lockdown measures, but now has achieved herd immunity against coronavirus.

      “And if you look at their numbers: 200 deaths per million compared to ours, [which is] about the same. Italy’s [is] about 400 per million and Spain is about 400 per million, so we are looking at this going, ‘OK, they took a completely different approach and their results are basically the same,’” said Erickson.

    “A militant wearing a suicide vest struck an intelligence bureau in northern Iraq on Tuesday, wounding at least three members of the security personnel, Iraqi officials said, blaming the attack on the Islamic State group.

    Iraqi security forces had spotted two men, one wearing an explosive vest and a driver, approaching the gate of the Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism Directorate in the Qadisiyah neighborhood in the northern city of Kirkuk, a security official said.

    The man hurled a grenade and then detonated his explosives vest before entering the premises, the official said. The other man, apparently the driver, sped away from the the scene.

    There was no claim of responsibility by the Islamic State group, which was largely defeated in Iraq in 2017 but still maintains sleeper cells to target Iraqi forces. Suicide bombings were a hallmark of the militant group, which at the height of its power in 2014 controlled nearly a third of both Iraq and Syria.

    A senior Iraqi intelligence official told The Associated Press that the department “had knowledge that Daesh would carry out a suicide operation against the Intelligence Directorate, but we did not know on which day.”…”

      Planet of the Humans, which takes aim at the green movement, is ‘full of misinformation’ says one distributor

      A new Michael Moore-produced documentary that takes aim at the supposed hypocrisy of the green movement is “dangerous, misleading and destructive” and should be removed from public viewing, according to an assortment of climate scientists and environmental campaigners.

      The film, Planet of the Humans, was released on the eve of Earth Day last week by its producer, Michael Moore, the baseball cap-wearing documentarian known for Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine. Describing itself as a “full-frontal assault on our sacred cows”, the film argues that electric cars and solar energy are unreliable and rely upon fossil fuels to function. It also attacks figures including Al Gore for bolstering corporations that push flawed technologies over real solutions to the climate crisis.

      Planet of the Humans has provoked a furious reaction from scientists and campaigners, however, who have called for it be taken down. Films for Action, an online library of videos, temporarily took down the film after describing it as “full of misinformation”, though they later reinstated it, saying they did not want accusations of censorship to give the film “more power and mystique than it deserves”. A free version on YouTube has been viewed more than 3m times.

      A letter written by Josh Fox, who made the documentary Gasland, and signed by various scientists and activists, has urged the removal of “shockingly misleading and absurd” film for making false claims about renewable energy. Planet of the Humans “trades in debunked fossil fuel industry talking points” that question the affordability and reliability of solar and wind energy, the letter states, pointing out that these alternatives are now cheaper to run than fossil fuels such as coal.

      Michael Mann, a climate scientist and signatory to Fox’s letter, said the film includes “various distortions, half-truths and lies” and that the filmmakers “have done a grave disservice to us and the planet by promoting climate change inactivist tropes and talking points.” The film’s makers did not respond to questions over whether it will be pulled down.

      Planet of the Humans has been shown at Moore’s Traverse City film festival, where the producer said it was “perhaps the most urgent film we’ve shown in the 15-year history of our film festival”. Jeff Gibbs, who wrote and directed the film, has suggested that unrestrained economic and population growth should be the target of environmentalists’ efforts rather than technological fixes.

      Climate activist Bill McKibben, one of the targets for the film for allegedly being influenced by corporate money and for supporting the burning of biomass such as wood chips for energy, said the characterisations are untrue. McKibben has previously changed his views on biomass energy, which he now sees as being detrimental to climate action, and claims he has “never taken a penny in pay” from any environmental group.

      “I am used to ceaseless harassment and attack from the fossil fuel industry, and I’ve done my best to ignore a lifetime of death threats from rightwing extremists,” McKibben said. “It does hurt more to be attacked by others who think of themselves as environmentalists.”

      Renewable energy has long been portrayed as expensive and unreliably intermittent by oil and gas companies and their lobby groups, which have spent several decades questioning the veracity of climate science and undermining efforts to radically reduce planet-heating emissions.

      In fact, the technology used for wind and solar energy has improved markedly in recent years, while the costs have plummeted. While electric cars often require fossil fuel-generated energy to produce them and provide the electricity to fuel them, research has shown they still emit less greenhouse gas and air pollutants over their lifetime than a standard petrol or diesel car.

      Generating all power from renewables will take significant upgrades of grid infrastructure and storage but several researchers have declared the goal feasible, most likely with carbon-capture technology for remaining fossil fuel plants. Scientists say the world must reach net zero emissions by 2050 to head off disastrous global heating, which would likely spur worsening storms, heatwaves, sea level rise and societal unrest.
