SOUTH AFRICA – Mosque raid video: Malema says police were well within their rights
EFF leader Julius Malema said there’s nothing wrong with the way in which police arrested 17 men in a mosque.
A video, showing police storming into a mosque where roughly 20 men were praying, became the talk of the town on social media on Saturday 25 April.

Police on alert at the funeral of a member of a criminal Arab clan in Berlin, Germany
Major operation for the Berlin police! Today, Monday, the deceased mother of clan leader Issa Remmo is to be buried. Special forces and officers will question them and point out the Corona distance rules. At the same time, the influx from the direction of Südkreuz increased. From here, mourners arrived on foot.
Shortly before, the hearse, accompanied by special forces and flashing blue lights, had already arrived at the cemetery. From an Audi car that followed the funeral procession could be heard a loud funeral song.

Germany: Remmo family funeral takes place in Berlin with heavy police presence amid pandemic
The funeral of the head of the Remmo family’s mother took place under close police watch in Berlin on Monday, amid coronavirus restrictions.
Hundreds of mourners from the extended family, which police allege is involved in organised crime, were expected to attend the ceremony, while restrictions put in place due to the coronavirus limited the number of attendees at one time to 20.
Clan chief Issa Remmo was in attendance at his mother’s funeral, after police raided his villa last week where 47 people were accused of not following social distancing rules.
The nearby streets were blocked and access to the cemetery was restricted by police, who only allowed mourners to enter in accordance with the list of attendees and in small groups in keeping with the rules.

The Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA) has “dispelled the fallacy that COVID-19 wouldn’t reach the people of the country” while addressing the spread of the virus in the country and the fact that mosques are still functioning.
As reported by local media, Pakistan’s top medical authorities said, “We think we are loved by God and therefore epidemics will not reach us, however, such fallacies should be dispelled and the severity of the disease should not be underestimated, especially under these critical circumstances.”
With the beginning of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, the mosques in the country remain functional as Pakistan’s government has allegedly succumbed to pressure from religious leaders in the country.
However, Prime Minister Khan has clarified that action will be taken if the mosques’ Special Operating Procedures (SOPs) between the clerics and government, and a 20-point agreement on safety and precaution, are not implemented during Ramadan.
The PIMA also highlighted that mosques are becoming a major source of COVID-19 transmission among citizens and therefore urged people to offer prayers from home.
This is the not the first time that a medical body in the country has raised concerns over people visiting mosques and worries that the situation is going to get worse in the country.
PIMA earlier stated that a situation may soon arise where they’ll have to choose between patients, and might have to treat them on the road if restrictions are not made more stringent during Ramadan.
According to the nation’s health ministry, Pakistan has over 13,000 coronavirus cases so far and has witnessed more than 250 deaths. The PIMA has warned that cases may rise exponentially in the coming months.”

The National Accountability Bureau of Pakistan has issued an arrest warrant against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in a land related corruption case.
Sharif, who is currently in London, allegedly illegally leased land to Jang Group – an independent media corporation – editor-in-chief Mir Shakilur Rehman in 1986, when the three-time Prime Minister was the chief of Punjab province, according to National Accountability Bureau (NAB) officials.
“The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has issued arrest warrants of PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif in the land case involving Jang Group editor-in-chief Mir Shakilur Rehman. Sharif was served notices and questionnaire in this case but no response came from him who is in London for his medical treatment,” a NAB official said on Sunday.
The officials have said that the arrest warrant has been issued on his non-cooperation with the NAB.
Pakistani courts had approved the former Prime Minister’s request for treatment abroad while he served a seven-year sentence on corruption charges in November 2019.
Sharif was charged on corruption over alleged money laundering via teh sales of shares from Chaudhry Sugar Mills Ltd in 1992, the National Accountability Bureau said in October 2019.
According to the watchdog, Sharif and his family were the biggest stakeholders at the time of the transfer, leading to his seven-year sentencing in December 2018. Sharif was granted bail in late October due to his failing health, reportedly due to a series of angina attacks.”

“Firing from both ends is underway. No reports of any injury to security forces personnel yet,” said a senior police official.
Director General of India’s Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) AP Maheshwari has recently claimed that a decline in terror activity has been observed during the coronavirus lockdown.
“There are several pockets were the terrorists have taken shelter. We are continuously carrying out cordon and search operations to arrest them,” Maheshwari had said.

“GREECE remains in the midst of a humanitarian crisis that continues to boil as refugees stuck in horror camps on the Aegean island hope that the worrying rise in cases reported in the centres is halted.
Thousands of refugees are crammed into destitute camps as they endure an agonising wait for asylum to be granted and their route from war torn countries to the European Union is complete. But as their stay on the islands, including Moria and Lesvos, goes on, many are faced with the grim prospect of not being able to carry out the desired social distancing measures the Greek government is demanding of its citizens. Panic is still spreading throughout the Greek islands over the coronavirus pandemic, despite Greece’s government readying itself to ease lockdown restrictions on its capital Athens.
The idyllic islands have become refugee hotspots after Turkey disobeyed its pact with the EU and opted to allow thousands of migrants the chance to cross the seas and land in Greece.
Istanbul argued its reason for allowing the move was in part due to the bloc’s slow approach to moving them on from Greece, which in turn affected the numbers in Turkey.
This has seen a massive boom in the volume of people making the hazardous trip in the attempt to reach the EU and safety from their home nations.
Greece, though, continues to refuse any new asylum applications, leaving those already broken from their horror journey, in an even bigger state of limbo, while living in camps with no running water or sanitation facilities.
And speaking from Lesvos, the International Rescue Committee’s programme manager for Greece, Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos exposed the grim reality of what is really going on inside the camps.
He told Express: “The restriction of movement means that it’s not easy for the refugees or asylum seekers who live in and around the camp to leave the area and go to town to go to supermarkets or visit other services if they need to, and this causes some frustration to the people.
“When asylum seekers living in the camp read the guidelines about the importance of social distancing and frequent handwashing, they know that none of these crucial measures can be implemented in Moria.
“Our clients have told us that their stress levels have increased, and I totally understand why.
“They know how vulnerable they are to this virus.”
The continual fear the human rights charity IRC has is that should any more cases of COVID-19 get through the camps, it would quickly spread due to the current living conditions for the refugees.
So far, Mr Panagiotopoulos said “there had been no cases of the virus confirmed in Moria”, and “for that we are incredibly lucky”.

“A suggestion by Turkey’s leading Muslim cleric that homosexuality causes illness has prompted a clash between President Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling Islamist-rooted AK Party and the country’s lawyer assocations over freedom of expression.
The lawyers condemned the cleric’s comment as harmful to human dignity, but an AKP spokesman said he had simply been speaking up for the values of the Turkish people and accused the lawyers of harbouring a “fascist mentality”.
On Friday, Ali Erbas, head of Turkey’s Directorate of Religious Affairs, said Islam condemns homosexuality because “it brings illnesses and corrupts generations”, adding that it also causes the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that leads to AIDS.
Homosexuality does not cause HIV but gay men who do not practise safe sex have been among the groups most vulnerable to the virus.
“Come and let’s fight together to protect people from such evil,” Erbas said in his weekly sermon.
Unlike in many other Muslim-majority countries, homosexuality is not a crime in Turkey. But homosexuals face widespread hostility and gay pride parades, which used to attract thousands of people from around the Middle East, have been banned in Istanbul in recent years.
The Ankara Bar Association said Erbas’s comments “came from ages ago” and were against human dignity. The Izmir Bar Association said it was concerned the statement could encourage new hate crimes.
On Monday, government officials took to Twitter to defend Erbas using the top-trending hashtag “Ali Erbas is not alone”.
“It is the most natural right for people to speak according to the value system they believe in,” said AKP spokesman Omer Celik on Twitter.
“What is abnormal is demanding the contrary,” Celik added, accusing the Ankara Bar Association of displaying a “fascist mentality” that sought to deprive Erbas of his right to free speech.
Presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin, using the same hashtag, said Erbas had voiced the “divine judgment”.
On Monday, the Ankara prosecutor’s office launched an investigation into the heads of the Ankara Bar Association on suspicion that they may have insulted Turks’ religious values, the state Anadolu news agency reported.
Human rights groups and the European Union have long accused Erdogan and his government of neglecting, and in some cases of rolling back, the rights of religious and ethnic minorities, homosexuals and women.”

“The U.N. human rights office voiced concern on Monday about more than a dozen countries that have declared states of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic where police have arrested or detained hundreds of thousands of people and killed others.
“Emergency powers should not be a weapon governments can wield to quash dissent, control the population, and even perpetuate their time in power,” U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said in a statement that denounced shootings and detentions without being specific.
A top official from her office said about 80 countries have declared emergencies due to the new coronavirus, including 15 where the allegations were deemed most troubling.
They were: Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Peru, Honduras, Jordan, Morocco, Cambodia, Uzbekistan, Iran and Hungary.
However, Georgette Gagnon, director of field operations, added at a virtual briefing in Geneva “there are probably several dozen more we could have highlighted”.
“A main concern on exceptional emergency measures is what has been described as a toxic lockdown culture in some countries,” Gagnon said. “As the High Commissioner highlighted, police and other security forces are using excessive and sometimes deadly force to enforce lockdowns and curfews.”
Some of those countries have arrested and detained tens of thousands of people for violation of confinement measures linked to the pandemic, with the Philippines topping the list with 120,000 apprehended for curfew violations in the past 30 days.
In the case of Kenya, Gagnon said that authorities were investigating 20 cases related to deaths linked to police conduct in implementing curfew measures. The country has reported 14 COVID deaths to the World Health Organization.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has apologised for police violence.
In South Africa, the U.N. has received reports of police using rubber bullets, tear gas, water bombs and whips, to enforce social distancing, especially in poor neighborhoods. Thirty-nine complaints including murder, rape, use of fire arms and corruption are being investigated, Gagnon said.
Police have described the use of whips as unacceptable.
In Nigeria, OHCHR has received reports that security forces killed 18 people in relation to COVID enforcement measures.
Nigerian authorities have attributed some deaths to prison violence.
She also raised concerns about police extortion in Africa.
“Those who cannot pay bribes, poor people, are taken to mandatory quarantine centres although there is no indication that they have come into contact with someone testing positive to COVID.”
Gagnon, asked about China’s record during the crisis, said: “The office has received reports of censorship on and offline, intimidation, arrest and apparent detention of dissenting voices such as doctors, journalists, human rights defenders and members of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party).” The office was liaising with China on around half of dozen of those cases, she said.”

“A report by the U.N. mission in Afghanistan on Monday noted a drop in the number of civilians killed in violence in the first three months of this year, compared to the same time last year, but underscored the still heavy toll the conflict continues to inflict on the civilian population.
The report said 533 people, including 152 children, died due to the fighting in the war-torn country in the first quarter of 2020, and hundreds more were wounded. That represented a 29% decrease, compared to the same period in 2019, and the lowest death toll figure for a first quarter of a year since 2012.
The report came as the Kabul police said a sticky bomb attached to a vehicle detonated in the capital on Monday but caused no casualties.
According to the report, the Taliban and other anti-government militant groups, such as the Islamic State group’s affiliate in Afghanistan, were responsible for the majority of the civilian casualties during the first three months – or 55%. The Taliban were responsible for as many as 39% of civilian casualties, the report said, an increase by 22% compared to the same period last year.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid rejected the U.N. report as an attempt “to cover up daily crimes against civilians committed by U.S. and Afghan forces.”…”

Germany: Berliners react as face masks become mandatory on public transport
Berliners shared their reactions from the German capital on Monday, as face masks became mandatory on public transport.
Bus, underground and tram users could all be seen obeying the new requirement, which was implemented at the same time as similar measures in other German states.
One woman commented that she thought the mask provision was “right” as it would allow unwell people to still access public transport.
Another local man commented that people may struggle to afford masks, saying that the “the federal government, should intervene there and accordingly should also distribute the masks free of charge to the population.”
Katrin, another resident, voiced similar sentiments saying that “many can’t afford them.”
While other states have put in place similar mask requirements Berlin’s differs from many in that people are not obliged to wear their masks while shopping, and there is not yet a fine in place for those caught flouting the rules.

The world’s largest and heaviest cargo plane, the Antonov An-225 Mriya, loaded with more than 10 million protective masks from China, arrived at the Leipzig/Halle Airport on Monday.
Footage showed Germany’s Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer arriving at the airport to receive the package.
“The largest cargo plane in the world has landed here, and today has brought a little more than 10 million masks from China to Germany,” said the defence minister, who added that “it is part of a delivery of a total of 25 million masks.”
Kramp-Karrenbauer considered the delivery, which arrived today, to be “part of a large whole try to make the corona crisis in Germany tolerable for people.”
The defence minister said that, “the material will now be transferred to a private shipping company, and then distributed to the federal states, who will then determine how many masks locations will receive.

Russia set to unveil giant ‘Orthodox Cathedral of Armed Forces’
A giant Orthodox cathedral located at Patriot military park outside the Russian capital is slated to be unveiled next month to celebrate victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
Besides the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in 1945, the church also glorifies other “feats of arms of the Russian people” including Moscow’s takeover of Crimea in 2014, according to Russian Defence Ministry spokesperson.
Standing 96 meters tall and crowned by six golden globes, the cathedral will be Russia’s third-largest Orthodox Christian church.
The unprecedented project has been steeped in symbolism, with the bell chamber’s height — 75 meters — symbolising the 75th anniversary of victory over the Nazi.
Melted-down elements of Nazi tanks and planes have been used to build the cathedral’s steps, the defence ministry spokesman said.
Even before its formal opening on May 9, the church has become the target of fierce criticism and ridicule.
It will be the first time that the Russian Orthodox Church has agreed that the image of Stalin — who famously clamped down on religion — appear in a cathedral, historians said.

“Boris Johnson’s government has rejected a petition signed by more than 120,000 people demanding the release of a report on the ethnic background of grooming rape gangs.
The no-stone-unturned investigation was announced by Home Secretary Priti Patel’s predecessor, Sajid Javid, in 2018, with a promise that he would “not let cultural or political sensitivities get in the way of understanding the problem and doing something about it”.
So-called grooming gangs had been found to be comprised overwhelmingly of Muslim men, usually although not always of Pakistani heritage, who preyed overwhelmingly on non-Muslim girls and young women, usually although not always working-class white girls.
The gangs abused girls on an “industrial” scale for decades, with probes finding that police, social workers, and other authority figures had turned a blind eye to it — and sometimes persecuted the victims or their families when they tried to get involved — for fear that doing something about the crimes would “inflame” the Muslim community or result in officials being accused of “racism”.
The Home Office inquiry was supposed to finally lift the lid on the ethnic dimensions of the crime — judges and law enforcement are to this day resisting treating them as racially-aggravated — at the highest level of government. Yet despite the initial fanfare, members of the public who wondered why they were receiving no word on the progress of the investigation were informed that it would remain “internal”.
Attempts to uncover the report via the Freedom of Information Act failed, with Home Office bureaucrats insisting that releasing their findings would not be in “the public interest”, and that they needed to “protect the ‘safe space’ necessary for ministers and officials to consider policy options in private”.
After all the years of official failure on grooming gangs — which have never resulted in any individual senior police officer, bureaucrat, or current or former politician actually facing sanctions, despite multiple admissions that victims had been “collectively” let down — many members of the public were unsatisfied with this, to say the least, resorting to an official petition for the findings to be made public.
This quickly passed 10,000 signatures, necessitating an official response from the government, and then 100,000 signatures, meaning it must be considered for a full parliamentary debate.
After more than 50 days, the government has finally provided that response — the possibility of a parliamentary debate has not yet been discussed, likely due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic — and, as before, rejected the demands for transparency, in the vaguest of terms.
“Child sexual abusers come from all walks of life, and from many different age groups, communities, ethnicities and faiths,” the response, provided by the Home Office, states, in the same politically terms Javid had suggested the report would get away from.
“To help end this terrible form of abuse, the Home Office has been investigating the characteristics of group-based child sexual exploitation,” they continued, telling petitioners what they already knew.
“It is right, proper and routine for the Government to carry out internal fact-finding work as part of policy development, as we do across a range of crime threats. Any insights gained from this important internal work will be used to inform our future action to end this devastating abuse, including the forthcoming Strategy,” they continued — leaving petitioners to infer that said fact-finding work will remain “internal”.
“The Government appreciates public interest in this matter and shares the nation’s outrage and determination to end this atrocious form of abuse. Mistakes have undoubtedly been made in the past and must never be allowed to happen again,” they admitted — but while neatly skimming over the fact that they continuing to not make their findings publicly available.
Much of the rest of the response was padded out with references to all the supposed determination of the government to bring “vile offenders” to justice — although no action has been taken to prevent grooming gang rapists from continuing to enjoy automatically early release on licence after serving relatively short prison terms, or to prevent them from returning to the areas where their former victims live.
Some reported encountering abusers in the street and other public places, even in some particular cases where the government had promised they would be stripped of their British citizenship and deported.
To date, it appears that none of those promises have been followed through.”

“A study released Monday by the Boston-based Pioneer Institute reveals a historic drop in national reading and math scores among U.S. students since the adoption of the Common Core Curriculum Standards a decade ago.
“Nearly a decade after states adopted Common Core, the empirical evidence makes it clear that these national standards have yielded underwhelming results for students,” said Pioneer executive director Jim Stergios in a statement. “The proponents of this expensive, legally questionable policy initiative have much to answer for.”
The study, titled “The Common Core Debacle” and authored by education policy researcher Theodor Rebarber, asserts the “shocking trends” in American student performance in critical math and reading skills since the creation of the U.S. Education Department 40 years ago recommends reevaluation of federal involvement in education.
Performance in reading and math since the adoption of Common Core has especially declined in the nation’s lowest-achieving students – many of whom come from low-income families and failing public schools – widening the achievement gap and creating further inequality.
Supporters of Common Core, however, touted the Obama-era federally incentivized standards would be “rigorous” and also “level the playing field.” The Common Core State Standards Initiative boasted that the standards are “important” because:
[h]igh standards that are consistent across states provide teachers, parents, and students with a set of clear expectations to ensure that all students have the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life upon graduation from high school, regardless of where they live. … The standards promote equity by ensuring all students are well prepared to collaborate and compete with their peers in the United States and abroad.
Rebarber observed, however, that while national fourth- and eighth-grade reading scores were rising at about half a point each year from 2003 to 2013, since that time, reading scores have dropped.
“Over the past decade, there has been no progress in either mathematics or reading performance,” Dr. Peggy Carr, associate commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics, said in October 2019 following the release of the Nation’s Report Card [National Assessment of Educational Progress] assessments in math and reading for fourth- and eighth-graders.
“The lowest performing students – those readers who struggle the most – have made no progress in reading from the first NAEP administration almost 30 years ago,” she added:

Rebarber also noted U.S. school children have suffered as a result of the poor-quality Common Core, yet another progressive education reform touted at the federal level:
Dissatisfied with the pace of improvement, most states were persuaded to set aside their own efforts for the promise of a single set of national curriculum standards: the Common Core. Substantive criticism of the national standards, especially by a group of scholars and experts associated with Pioneer Institute, found them not to be internationally competitive, weak on literary content, and based on misguided progressive instructional assumptions and dogmas. In response, Common Core proponents mostly circled the wagons and refused to address substantive criticism of the quality of the standards.
“Several of us allied with Pioneer Institute have been pointing out, ever since it was introduced, the deeply flawed educational assumptions that permeate the Common Core and the many ways in which it is at odds with curriculum standards in top-achieving countries,” Rebarber said.
In the wake of the Common Core “debacle,” a national organization of parents has risen and is calling for an end to federal involvement in education and a return to policy-making at the local level.
United States Parents Involved in Education (USPIE) has produced Truth and Lies in American Education, a film focused on what the coalition of parents says is “the scheme behind the workforce development model of education and liberal indoctrination of children in government schools”:

Le protocole thérapeutique à base de chloroquine, médicament couramment utilisé contre le paludisme, a montré son efficacité «quasi totale» contre le nouveau coronavirus en Algérie, selon des professeurs de santé publique.
L’Algérie a importé jusqu’à présent 253 000 boîtes de chloroquine, a annoncé le ministre délégué chargé de l’Industrie pharmaceutique, Lotfi Benbahmed, soulignant que plus de 120 000 unités sont fabriquées en Algérie.
Chef du service maladies infectieuses à l’établissement hospitalier public de Boufarik (Blida) (ci-dessus), le Dr Mohamed Yousfi a estimé que 150 des 300 patients atteints de Covid-19, hospitalisés depuis le 23 mars au niveau de cet établissement, ont quitté l’hôpital, totalement guéris, après avoir été traités soit à base de chloroquine ou d’antiviraux. «90% des cas ont très bien réagi à ce protocole de traitement recommandé par le ministère de la Santé, de la Population et de la Réforme hospitalière», a relevé le Dr Yousfi, ajoutant que les «récents résultats d’analyses pour ces patients ont démontré leur guérison totale».
«Sont exclus de ce protocole thérapeutique, les patients souffrant de maladies cardiovasculaires et ceux n’ayant pas toléré ce traitement. Ces derniers ont été mis sous antiviraux, utilisés dans le traitement des infections par le VIH, ayant donné des résultats très satisfaisants», a-t-il expliqué, cité par l’APS.
Même son de cloche auprès du Pr Nassima Achour, chef du service maladies infectieuses à l’EHS El Kettar, à Alger, où sont soumis plus de 85 patients à un traitement à base de chloroquine associée et à des antiviraux destinés au traitement du sida. Evoquant une «efficacité quasi totale» de ce traitement, elle a relevé que l’état de santé des malades évolue de manière positive.
Même constat dressé par le Pr Lyes Rehal, directeur général de l’Institut national de santé publique. Le protocole thérapeutique à base de chloroquine a montré son efficacité chez la plupart des patients auxquels il a été administré, selon ce membre du comité scientifique de suivi de l’évolution de la pandémie du coronavirus.
Quelque 69,4% des 5000 patients traités, du 24 mars à ce jour, ont été soumis à la chloroquine pour une période maximale de 10 jours. «21,3% de l’échantillon susmentionné ont reçu un traitement à la chloroquine pendant une période allant de 5 à 6 jours, et seulement 1,8% ont reçu ce traitement pendant une période allant d’un à cinq jours», a fait savoir Lyes Rehal.
Le ministre de la Santé, Abderrahmane Benbouzid, avait lui aussi indiqué, jeudi dernier, que «les données sanitaires et les études menées par les experts sur l’utilisation du protocole à base de chloroquine en association avec des antibiotiques font état d’indicateurs satisfaisants».
Il a souligné la disponibilité de plus de 250 000 boîtes de chloroquine au niveau de la Pharmacie centrale des hôpitaux, estimant que cette quantité est «suffisante» pour traiter les cas enregistrés quotidiennement en attendant le développement de sa production localement dans les prochains jours.
Unique producteur de chloroquine en Algérie, l’usine CPCM Pharma de Lakhdaria (Bouira) produira dans un premier temps 460 000 unités de ce médicament en mai et 300 000 en juillet et août, soit un total de plus de 700 000 boîtes, a souligné son directeur général, Abdelhakim Bouzid, notant que la première quantité de matière première pour la production de ce médicament sera réceptionnée dans les prochains jours.

CNN Exclusive: She’s been falsely accused of starting the pandemic. Her life has been turned upside down
Maatje Benassi, a US Army reservist and mother of two, has become the target of conspiracy theorists who falsely place her at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, saying she brought the disease to China.
The false claims are spreading across YouTube every day, so far racking up hundreds of thousands of apparent views, and have been embraced by Chinese Communist Party media. Despite never having tested positive for the coronavirus or experienced symptoms, Benassi and her husband are now subjects of discussion on Chinese social media about the outbreak, including among accounts that are known drivers of large-scale coordinated activities by their followers.
The claims have turned their lives upside down. The couple say their home address has been posted online and that, before they shut down their accounts, their social media inboxes were overrun with messages from believers of the conspiracy.
“It’s like waking up from a bad dream going into a nightmare day after day,” Maatje Benassi told CNN Business in an exclusive interview, the first time she has spoken publicly since being smeared online.
As the coronavirus has spread around the world, so has misinformation about the disease. Technology giants have touted the steps they are taking to combat coronavirus misinformation, but these efforts have failed to help the Benassis. The family’s suffering highlights the potential for blatant falsehoods to be rewarded and amplified by social media platforms. It also serves as a powerful reminder that misinformation online, however wild or obviously untrue it may seem, can have real and lasting consequences offline.
Maajte and her husband Matt are still active in their government jobs. Maajte is a civilian employee at the US Army’s Fort Belvoir in Virginia where she works as a security officer. Matt, a retired Air Force officer, is a civilian employee with the Air Force at the Pentagon.
Despite working for the US government, the couple are experiencing the same feelings of helplessness familiar to others who have been the target of harassment and misinformation. “I want everybody to stop harassing me, because this is cyberbullying to me and it’s gone way out of hand,” Maajte said while fighting back tears.
Matt has tried to get the videos taken down from YouTube and to prevent their spread online. The couple said they contacted an attorney, who told them there was little that could be done, and local police, who told them much the same.
Origins of a coronavirus conspiracy theory
Conspiracy theories are not dissimilar to viruses, in that they evolve and mutate to spread and survive. Before Maatje Benassi became the main protagonist in this conspiracy, variations had circulated online for months.
In the early weeks of the coronavirus, conspiracy theorists began claiming, without evidence, that it was a US biological weapon. Later one member of the Chinese government publicly promoted the notion that the US military brought the virus to China. US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said it was “completely ridiculous and it’s irresponsible” for someone speaking on behalf of the Chinese government to promote such a claim.
It wasn’t until March, months after the first reported coronavirus cases in China, that conspiracy theorists turned their focus to Maatje Benassi. The baseless theory began with her participation in October in the Military World Games, essentially the military Olympics, which was hosted by Wuhan, the Chinese city where the coronavirus outbreak began last year.
Maatje Benassi competed in the cycling competition there, suffering an accident on the final lap that left her with a fractured rib and a concussion. Despite the crash, Benassi still finished the race, but it turned out to be the start of something worse. While hundreds of athletes from the US military took part in the games, Maatje Benassi was plucked out of the group and given a starring role in the conspiracy theory.
“It’s really hard to hold him [Webb] accountable,” Matt Benassi said. “Law enforcement will tell you that there’s nothing that we can do about it because we have free speech in this country. Then they say, ‘Go talk to a civil attorney,’ so we did. We talked to an attorney. You quickly realize that for folks like us, it’s just too expensive to litigate something like this. We get no recourse from law enforcement. We get no recourse from the courts.”
Matt Benassi said he has complained to YouTube but even when the company does take videos down it can take days for it to do so. By that time, a video can go viral, and the damage is done. Worse still: videos Webb has posted to YouTube that are removed are often re-uploaded to the platform.
In China, the YouTube videos attacking the Benassis are uploaded to popular platforms there such as WeChat, Weibo, and Xigua Video and are translated into Chinese, according to an analysis by Keenan Chen, a researcher at First Draft, a non-profit that researches disinformation.
The Benassis’ experience is unfortunately not unique, said Danielle Citron, a professor of law at Boston University School of Law and a MacArthur Fellow who studies online harassment. Faced with “cyber mobs,” as Citron describes them, law enforcement often can’t or won’t investigate.
As for the likes of YouTube, Citron said the law has to change: “Right now, they’re totally immune from legal liability under federal law. And so they can just walk away.”
Whatever happens next, “the damage is done,” according to Maatje Benassi. “I know it [will] never be the same.Every time you’re going to Google my name, it will pop up as patient zero.”

Despite its complicity in helping China cover-up the severity of the coronavirus pandemic, the head of the World Health Organization today claimed “the world should have listened” to the WHO.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual press briefing that the WHO told the world the COVID-19 outbreak constituted a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern” on January 30, when there were only 82 cases registered outside China
“The world should have listened to WHO then carefully,” Ghebreyesus asserted.
The sheer inaccuracy of these statements would be funny if not for the fact that lives were lost due to the WHO’s mishandling of the outbreak.
At every step of the way, the WHO praised China’s actions on coronavirus, despite widespread evidence that the virus was leaked from a lab, that Beijing lied about the true fatality numbers and had known about coronavirus at least weeks before it informed the WHO.
On January 14th, the WHO amplified Chinese government propaganda that there had been no “human to human transmission” of COVID-19, despite this having actually occurred back in November.
According to sources who told Fox News that the virus was leaked from a lab in Wuhan, this represented the “costliest government coverup of all time” and “the World Health Organization (WHO) was complicit from the beginning in helping China cover its tracks.”
The WHO also blocked doctors from urging countries to impose border controls to stop the spread of coronavirus and repeatedly told countries not to close borders, despite this being an effective way of controlling the spread of the virus.
Right up until the end of February, the WHO continued “to advise against the application of travel or trade restrictions to countries experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks,” despite the rapid spread of the disease.
A Mount Sinai study found that New York City’s record-high coronavirus cases and deaths were “predominately” due to travel from Europe, meaning that many more lives could have been saved if borders had been closed down earlier.
But instead, the WHO insisted that maintaining the globalist principle of the international traffic of people was more important than stopping a global pandemic.
The organization also repeatedly told countries not to profile Chinese people in order to avoid “stigmatization,” something that almost certainly led to a lack of screenings of Chinese people passing through airports.
Given this history, more lives would have been saved if countries had in fact listened to the World Health Organization a lot less.

Equally important, the poll shows that this undertaking has no political leaning. When pollsters asked if the coronavirus is a “Republican issue,” only 9% said yes. Some 7% said it was a Democrat issue. A stunning 79% of likely voters said, “partisan politics have no role to play in the coronavirus response.”
Perhaps the last time any of us saw nearly 80% of Americans agree on any issue was our resolute response to the 9/11 attacks by terrorists or our nation’s spirit following Pearl Harbor. Today’s findings send a strong and unmistakable message to all politicians, pundits, and policy makers that there is no room for politics in a COVID-19 era, one that will require us to reinvent the American economy by bringing manufacturing, jobs and investment back to the United States.
