China emphasised that the changes made by the Indian side do not conform to the consensus of G20 leaders and trade ministers to realize a free, fair, non-discriminatory trade and investment environment.
On April 18, India’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) revised its foreign investment policy, making it much more difficult for companies from countries sharing land border with India, including China, to invest in the country.
“An entity of a country, which shares land border with India or where the beneficial owner of investment into India is situated in or is a citizen of any such country, can invest only under the Government route,” the notification issued by India’s DPIIT reads.
As of December 2019, China’s cumulative investment in India has exceeded $8 billion, far more than the total investments of India’s other neighbours.
In recent years, Chinese companies have made massive investment in Indian companies operating in businesses such as telecoms, electrics, infrastructure and automobile manufacturing.
According to Gateway House research, Chinese tech investors have invested an estimated $4 billion in Indian start-ups alone.
Germany and Italy tightened their foreign investment laws on 8 April while Spain and Australia also made changes to protect their companies from opportunistic takeovers. Last week, the International Monetary Fund forecast a sharp global downturn.”

Richard I have been sitting on the videos of these Hindu Saints being lynched and beaten to death by a muslim mob for a day or more.

Iran downplayed the crisis for weeks, even as top officials found themselves sick with the virus. The country’s civilian government, led by President Hassan Rouhani, has declined to implement the 24-hour lockdowns seen in other Mideast nations.
Authorities have defended their response by outpointing the harsh economic impact such a lockdown would have. Iran already struggles under severe U.S. sanctions blocking the sale of its crude oil abroad, measures imposed after President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers in 2018. That has led to a monthslong period of increasing tensions between the nations — tensions that have persisted through the pandemic.
The state-owned polling center ISPA found the virus has hurt the income of 50% of those surveyed, with 42% saying their businesses closed as a result. Of those polled this month, 13.5% said the outbreak left them jobless. The survey interviewed 1,563 people and offered no margin of error.
Iran’s economy suffered from over 20% unemployment among its youth and over 40% inflation even before the outbreak.
“I only pick passengers with masks. I cannot put my health at risk,” said Ali Qomi, who uses his personal car as a gypsy cab, like many other unemployed Iranians. “We poor people have no way except working to afford the increasing prices of our daily needs.”
That need has put drivers at risk. In Tehran, taxi officials say over a dozen cab drivers died from the virus and more than 300 contracted it. But distancing and government decisions have seen more people drive themselves, taking away from the cabbies’ possible fares. Meanwhile, some worry the plastic guard shield they put up may not be enough protection.
“Its presence is better than its absence,” lawyer Mahsa Leilidoost, a recent taxi passenger, said of the shield.
Ali Reza Zali, who is leading the campaign against the outbreak in Tehran, warned that re-opening of businesses may spread the infection, Iranian media reported.
“The significant point is that more commuting, especially through public transportation, adds to the possibility of contracting” the virus, he said.
Mosques and shrines remain closed after earlier being suspected of being a transmission source for the virus. That’s even as the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan is due to begin later this week, based on the sighting of the crescent moon.
Rouhani said some sites will likely open May 4, around 10 days into Ramadan. But Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has final say on all state matters, has already suggested that mass gatherings may be barred throughout Ramadan over the virus.
Next door, in Afghanistan, at least 20 employees at the presidential palace have tested positive for COVID-19, according to a senior government official who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to talk to reportesr.
It wasn’t clear whether President Ashraf Ghani had been in contact with any of the employees or whether he had been tested himself. The presidential palace has refused to comment. Ghani has reportedly been self-isolating, although he still meets daily with some senior officials. At 70 and a cancer survivor, Ghani is considered in the higher risk category. Afghanistan has reported over 1,000 cases of coronavirus and 36 deaths.
In Saudi Arabia, home to the holiest sites in Islam and ruled by the Sunni Al Saud family, a top council of clerics has called on people in the kingdom to pray at home throughout Ramadan. The council advised Muslims to conduct nightly prayers at home “in order to preserve the lives of people and grow closer to the Almighty God.”
Already in Sudan, mosques in the capital, Khartoum, are closed as part of a three-week lockdown over the virus that will extend into Ramadan.”

Much commentary has been heaped on the Trump administration’s apparent plan to “veto” a loan to Iran under a new IMF facility intended to help countries deal with the COVID-19 crisis. To describe this reporting as ill-informed is to be polite.
For one thing, Iran already has immediate access to $2.8 billion in existing funds from the IMF without drawing up any new loans—$700 million in its “reserve tranche” and $2.1 billion in Special Drawing Rights. This money is available without condition, yet Tehran has made no effort to use it during its ongoing health and economic crises.
More important, the regime holds at least $90 billion in foreign exchange reserves, a large portion of which are now accessible. These factors raise questions about Tehran’s motivations in applying for the loan.

Pakistan says militant attack in northwest kills soldier

“Militants armed with assault rifles attacked a Pakistani army security post in a former Taliban stronghold in the country’s northwest early on Monday, triggering a shootout that killed a soldier, the military said. Five insurgents were also killed, it said.
The military says the attack took place near the town of Miran Shah, the main urban center in the North Waziristan district that borders Afghanistan. Three troops were also wounded in the shootout.
North Waziristan was a militant base until recent years when the Pakistani military said its successive operations there had cleared the area of the Taliban. However, violence has increased there in recent weeks, spreading fear among residents that the military might carry out more operations.
“Troops effectively engaged the terrorists,” a military statement said, adding that troops subsequently launched a search operation in the area.
The Pakistani army in recent weeks deployed thousand of troops across the country to help the government enforce a lockdown in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. But, it was unclear whether troops engaged in that mission were relocated from the northwestern region along the Afghan border.

China calls for stronger testing regime to detect coronavirus
BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) – China’s health authority called for a stronger and more rigorous testing regime to ensure that the new coronavirus does not escape detection, whether in travellers arriving from abroad or from other parts of the country.
All localities must improve their testing capabilities, including those at border crossings, and report any epidemic information in a timely manner, the National Health Commission cited its director Ma Xiaowei as saying. Ma made the comments on Saturday, but they were released by the ministry on Monday.
China, where the new virus emerged late last year, reported 12 new confirmed cases on April 19, the lowest since March 13.

MOSCOW (Reuters) – A black market has developed in Russia for an antiviral HIV drug explored as a possible treatment for COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus, according to sellers, HIV activists and the head of the drug’s main Russian producer.
More than 20 trials around the world are testing Kaletra as a COVID-19 treatment or post-exposure prophylaxis.

Russia’s Health Ministry recommended it as a possible treatment for COVID-19 at the end of January after reports from China that it was beneficial, but later added that its efficacy was uncertain.

“Three months ago, people were buying Kaletra from us without much enthusiasm for 900 roubles ($12) a box,” one online trader of HIV drugs said.
“Now, anticipating (supply) interruptions, people are buying between 100 and 700 boxes from us, at 3,800 roubles a box. Mainly, people are buying (Kaletra) with the aim of reselling it for a very high price.”

Russia quarantines thousands of troops after calling off Red Square parade
MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia’s ministry of defence said on Monday it had ordered thousands of troops into a two-week quarantine after a vast Red Square military parade in Moscow they had been rehearsing for was called off because of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Up to 15,000 troops were due to parade alongside military hardware on May 9 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s World War Two victory, an event the Kremlin hoped would showcase Russia’s military and diplomatic clout.

France: Overnight riots in Paris suburb after motorcycle incident involving police
Tensions with police continued on Sunday evening in the French commune of Villeneuve-la-Garenne, in Paris’s northern suburbs, where a motorcyclist’s collision with an unmarked police car had resulted in scuffles with residents the day before.
According to reports citing residents, scuffles began around midnight and lasted for about an hour. Law enforcement personnel dispatched to the scene reportedly used tear gas.
Footage from early on Monday morning shows fires, the remains of a burnt vehicle and police officers patrolling the area.
On Saturday evening, a 30-year-old man was injured in the leg after reportedly hitting the open door of an unmarked police car, under circumstances that are still unclear.
Police said it opened the door to check on the man, who was allegedly driving at high speed and without a helmet and allegedly ran over one of them before hitting their vehicle.
According to videos posted on Twitter, residents said that the car door was purposely opened to stop the biker.
The biker was successfully operated on on Sunday and declared his intent to press charges against the police on Monday, according to reports citing his family and lawyers.
After the accident, scuffles reportedly broke out between the police and about fifty people.

Norway: Police on site of Oslo knife attack that left 3 injured
Police were on the site of a knife attack that left three injured in an Oslo apartment on Monday.
The perpetrator was reportedly arrested.
Footage filmed at the premisses of the attack in in the Ammerud neighbourhood, a part of Grorud Borough of the Norwegian capital city, shows police officers gathering evidence behind a security cordon.
According to local media, two of the injured were taken to the hospital, with one being in serious condition and the other in critical condition, and the third one was sent to an emergency clinic with minor wounds.

Norway: Motives of stabbing attack suspect still unknown – police
Oslo police apprehended a man in his thirties on Monday after a knife attack hospitalised three in the Ammerud neighbourhood in the east side of Oslo.
His motives are still unknown.
Footage filmed at the crime scene shortly after the attack in the Norwegian capital shows police officers gathering evidence and cordoning off the area.
“The police were notified at 13:30 about a possible ongoing deadly action in one of the apartments in the building. We came with a full team and it was confirmed that there was a knife attack with three people injured, one of them had serious injuries and was brought to the hospital,” explained Oslo police emergency leader Ms. Meyrer.
“We gained control of the perpetrator who was about 30 years old. It’s still too early to know the motive for the actions,” confirmed Ms. Meyrer.
A police spokesperson confirmed that the victims included two men and a woman. Two of the injured were rushed to the hospital, one of whom has serious injuries and the other is in critical condition. The third victim suffered less serious injuries and received treatment at Oslo’s Legevakt E.R.

But we will not allow ourselves to become infected with the disease of Chinese authoritarianism. We have been willing to radically alter our normal routines and obey strict social distancing guidelines to get past the worst of this pandemic. Indeed, the American people have made extraordinary sacrifices and endured economic hardships unprecedented in our lifetimes to slow the virus’s spread. But it’s one thing to temporarily disrupt the normal pattern of our day-to-day lives and the economy in order to ensure that our health system would not be overwhelmed by an unprecedented surge of critical cases of the coronavirus. It is quite another to continue keeping onerous restrictions in place based on flimsy what-ifs. The original mission of social distancing was to flatten the curve.

China furious over German newspaper claims that China caused Covid-19 outbreak
China has launched a furious war-of-words over a letter by German magazine Bild editor accusing China of being the cause of the Covid-19 outbreak and demanding massive reparations.
Meanwhile, the French foreign ministry has summoned the Chinese ambassador to France over an article that “slanders” staff of French nursing homes.
“What China owes us,” a provocative article in German tabloid Bild published on 15 April, put a price tag of nearly €150 billion for damages inflicted on the country by Covid-19 pandemic.
The itemized “invoice” included €24 billion in lost tourism revenue from March to April, €7.2 billion in losses for the German film industry, €1 million per hour in costs for Lufthansa, and €50 billion in lost profits for German small businesses.
China responded in anger an open letter to Bild editor Julian Reichelt pointing out that China warned the world early of the dangers of the virus, while rejecting any obligation to pay damages. It also reproached Bild “nationalism, prejudice, and hostility against China.”
Political legacy
Reichelt countered with another open letter, saying that Chinese President Xi Jinping “rules by surveillance,” which is a “denial of freedom,” charging that Beijing didn’t respond to western requests after it discovered the virus in Wuhan.
It concluded that “…China is known as a surveillance state that infected the world with a deadly disease. That is your political legacy.”
Bild has had a previous private spat with the Chinese embassy in Berlin after the newspaper invited maverick Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong to Germany in September 2019, at the height of mass protests against the growing influence of Beijing. Wong then also met with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.
China’s ambassador reacted furiously at the time, charging that Germany “allows a separatist like Joshua Wong to enter its territory to use it for anti-Chinese, separatist activities,” and reproaching foreign minister Maas for openly meeting with him.”
The Chinese embassy then organised a press conference, but refused entry to Bild journalist Philipp Piatof, saying there “wasn’t enough room.”
‘Restoring distorted facts’
The Chinese- German spat follows a confrontation between France and Beijing after the Chinese embassy in Paris on 12 April published a French language article entitled “Restoring distorted facts – Observations of a Chinese diplomat posted to Paris.”
In the post, an unnamed diplomat suggests that careworkers in Western nursing homes had abandoned their jobs, leaving residents to die.
Beijing dismissed the incident as a “malentendu”, with a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry saying Beijing had never given any negative criticism of France’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and had no intention of doing so.
The response came after French foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian summoned China’s ambassador to France to express his “clear disapproval” of recent comments over how France is dealing with the coronavirus crisis.
“I can’t accept that anyone, including the Chinese embassy, slanders staff of our retirement homes,” he says in an interview published by Le Monde on April 20.

The wild claims have gained traction with conservative pundits like Laura Ingraham and anti-vaccinators such as Robert F. For weeks, Mr. Gates has appeared on TV, on op-ed pages and in Reddit forums calling for stay-at-home policies, expanded testing and vaccine development. In a shocking essay for Harvard Magazine, a professor of law and director of Harvard Law School’s child advocacy legal clinic, claims homeschooling is a threat to children’s rights, a method of promoting white supremacy, and a drain on democratic society — and even goes so far as to suggest a national “presumptive ban” on the practice.
Harvard is playing host to a “homeschooling summit,” slated to take place (at least digitally) June 18-19, according to the Daily Caller News Foundation. But Harvard’s concern isn’t so much whether homeschooling is a viable, cost-effective, and comfortable method of education for many Americans, but rather whether homeschooling is (and homeschooled children are) a ticking time bomb.

Republican in Iowa’s 2nd District primary calls for Islam’s religious status to be revoked
A Republican candidate for Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District, whose platform calls for redefining Islam as “militant cultural imperialism seeking world domination,” drew fire Monday for saying he doesn’t believe Islam is protected under the First Amendment.
Pella Republican Rick Phillips told Quad Cities television station WHBF that he believes the founding fathers were specifically talking about Christianity and its denominations when they established the freedom of religion outlined in the Bill of Rights.
“They were not talking about anti-Christian beliefs,” he said. “Now, if a person doesn’t want to believe in Christ, that’s their business. But to say that this First Amendment right includes all religions in the world, I think, is erroneous.”
Reached by the Des Moines Register Monday afternoon, Phillips said he has spent time personally studying Islam and believes that when a Muslim swears the oath to the Constitution using the Quran, that negates the constitutional law because they are “sworn to turn this country into an Islamic country.”

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was born on March 3, 1965 in the city of Asmara, which at that time was in Ethiopia but is now the capital of neighboring Eritrea. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Asmara in 1986, a Master of Science degree in Immunology of Infectious Diseases from the University of London in 1992, and a PhD in Community Health from the University of Nottingham in 2000.
After graduating from college in 1986, Tedros joined the Ethiopian government’s Ministry of Health as a junior public health expert. Following the fall of Mengistu Haile Mariam, the tyrant who ruled Ethiopia from 1977-91, Tedros moved to London to attend graduate school. He then returned to Ethiopia and in 2001 was appointed head of the Tigray Regional Health Bureau. Two years later, he was named a State Minister of Health.
From 2005-12, Tedros served as Ethiopia’s Federal Minister of Health. During his tenure in that position, he purposely covered up three separate outbreaks of cholera (in 2006, 2009, and 2011) by simply renaming the deadly epidemics as “Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD)” – even after the diagnosis of Vibrio Cholerae, the bacteria that causes cholera, had been confirmed. According to the Amhara Professionals Union, a Washington-based organization that seeks to protect the political and economic rights of the Amhara people of northwest Ethiopia: “[Tedros’s] priority … was to conceal the impact a public admission of cholera epidemic might have on tourism and [the] image of his Party, rather than protecting the international community and attempting to reach out to the affected areas. Such a sad error due to lack of judgment resulted in a nationwide epidemic.”
