Six arrested over double murder in ‘crowded’ south London flat (telegraph, Apr 2, 2020)

“Members of a south London community have spoken of their shock after a double murder in a “crowded flat” on an estate in Stockwell.
Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service were called to a property in Dorset Road at around 4pm on Wednesday.
A 59-year-old-man and a 56-year-old woman were found with multiple stab injuries and pronounced dead. Five men aged in their 40s to late 50s, and a woman in her early 50s, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.
Police said the two victims were believed to be known to each other, and officers were not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the murders.
A neighbour in Dorset Road, Cemal Emirze, 54, said “a lot of people” lived in the flat where the bodies were found. “Around this area and the community, there is usually always stabbings happening,” Mr Emirze said.
Community leaders said the murders had come at a time of increased anxiety and fear over the coronavirus pandemic.
Lambeth councillor Mohammed Seedat said: “A 13-year-old boy from Brixton with coronavirus sadly died, and 24 hours later this tragic murder happened.”
Mr Seedat said the block of flats in which the incident took place was largely occupied by Spanish-speaking people from the South American community. “They lived in a crowded flat and all knew each other,” he added.
“What’s become apparent is how the response time for police has slowed down because of coronavirus. Just getting an interpreter there was difficult.”
Abdi Musse, the director of Friends Of The Horn Foundation in Brixton, south London, said: “This was the last thing we expected in these difficult times. We were in state of shock already and, to add the stabbing, it is very sad indeed.”
Detective Chief Inspector Richard Leonard said the investigation was at a very early stage.
“We currently believe that many of those caught up in the tragic incident are from South American communities,” he said. “We are appealing directly to those communities in and around the local area for any assistance they can give us, and will be working closely with our partners and other agencies to reach potential witnesses.”

Swedish authorities are facing a real problem with migrants set for deportations due to the fact that borders around the globe have not only been closed and policies which limit the amount of time migrants can be held in detention.
Ulrica Granberg, the head of the Border Police in the district of Bergslagen, has sounded the alarm, saying that detention centres are packed with migrants awaiting deportation but many will have to be released, Sveriges Radio reports.
According to Granberg, at least four people have been released since borders closed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Sweden will likely be faced with the real possibility many of the freed migrants will go into hiding, a fact Granberg admitted, saying: “There is probably an imminent risk, yes.”
Prior to the coronavirus outbreak, Sweden still had major issues with facilitating deportations of illegal migrants and failed asylum seekers with a report from the Migration Studies Delegation (Delmi) in early February stating the government had made deportations a low priority.
“Within both the Police and the Swedish Migration Board, the two authorities that are going to execute cases, the deportation issues are regarded as an ‘odd activity’, not really in line with the core mission, or what the staff would prefer to do,” the report said.
Swedish Migration Board Director-General Mikael Ribbenvik went even further, saying the current Swedish asylum rules allow potential terrorists and war criminals to remain in Sweden even if they fail their asylum claims.
“Today we have a regulatory framework which means that in many cases they can stay in Sweden on roughly the same conditions as others and, in addition, move freely in and out of the country,” he said.
Swedish Left Party MP Daniel Riazat even recommended the public hide migrants up for deportation from the police, saying: “My message to all who can: Hide a refugee. If it becomes illegal. Hide two! It’s called Civil Courage and Humanity!””

“A leaked French diplomatic note has claimed that outbreaks of Chinese coronavirus in Africa could lead to the collapse of regimes in various countries across the continent.
Currently, coronavirus cases across Africa remain low in comparison to Europe, North America, and Asia, but experts predict that a severe outbreak of the disease could have catastrophic effects.
The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs diplomatic note, which was obtained by the Agence Ecofin news agency, states that some African states have health systems that would be “saturated automatically”.
The note goes on to states that elderly African leaders are at serious risk and if they become infected, it could lead to severe political instability in countries ruled by political strongmen.
The French ministry states that four groups can help calm potential panic among the public and help stabilise the region in the case of a mass outbreak.
The first group mentioned are religious leaders, then members of European diasporas, followed by popular celebrities and artists, and finally “economic entrepreneurs and neo-liberal businessmen.”
“Rich and globalized, they position themselves as the continent’s philanthropists: they can play a role if they decide to commit their means or to be an intermediary between the system of governance and Africa, but in any case, they will mark the state’s failure,” the note reads.
Mass panic and governmental collapse could also lead to a massive flow of migrants likely to head to the West.
In previous years, many leading politicians have predicted that Europe could see millions of African migrants arrive in the coming years, including former European Parliament president Antonio Tajani in 2017.
“If the problem of Africa is not tackled—drought, malnutrition—we will have millions and millions and Africans pushing (to enter Europe) and dams and walls will not be sufficient (to hold them back),” Tajani said.
Others, such as previous European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, have welcomed the idea of millions of new African migrants, saying the EU member states “have to provide [Africans] who want to come, and are able to come, and whose situation makes it possible for them to come, with legal paths to get to Europe.””

“Malaysian authorities said they have arrested a boatload of 202 people believed to be minority Muslim Rohingya refugees after their boat was found adrift Sunday morning near the northern resort island of Langkawi.
A Northern District maritime official, Capt. Zulinda Ramly, said the refugees included 152 men, 45 women and five children. She said some of the migrants told officials that the boat’s skipper and two others, believed to be behind the smuggling syndicate, had escaped while they were at sea.
Zulinda said maritime officials have taken precautionary measures to prevent any possible transmission of the COVID-19 virus while handling the group. The refugees were taken to the maritime office for further investigation before they are handed to the immigration department, she added. There were no further details on where the refugees came from.
More than 700,000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh after a counterinsurgency campaign by Myanmar’s military in the western state of Rakhine in response to attacks in 2017 by a Rohingya insurgent group. Bangladesh now hosts more than a million Rohingya refugees, and traffickers usually lure refugees by promising them a better life overseas.
Hundreds have been stopped by Bangladeshi coast guard officials trying to escape from one of the world’s largest migrant camps.
In February, 16 Rohingya refugees from a Bangladeshi migrant camp drowned after the overcrowded boat that was supposed to take them to Malaysia capsized in the Bay of Bengal. With more than a million refugees tightly packed in the camp, aid workers are also concerned about a possible outbreak of the coronavirus, although there are no confirmed cases yet.
Buddhist-majority Myanmar has long considered the Rohingya to be “Bengalis? from Bangladesh even though many of their families have lived in the country for generations. Nearly all have been denied citizenship since 1982, effectively rendering them stateless, and they are also denied freedom of movement and other basic rights.”

Germany reports third straight drop in daily rate of new coronavirus infections
FRANKFURT (Reuters) – Germany’s confirmed coronavirus infections rose by 5,936 in the past 24 hours to 91,714 on Sunday, the third straight drop in the daily rate of new cases, according to data from the government’s Robert Koch Institute.
Sunday’s figure amounted to a drop of 146 cases compared with 6,082 new infections recorded on Saturday, itself a fall from 6,174 new infections on Friday.
The reported death toll rose by 184 to 1,342.

Medical support facility prepared in New Orleans
State medical and emergency officials are preparing for Monday’s opening of the Morial Convention Center, which is being converted into a medical support facility to help local hospitals care for patients infected with the new coronavirus.
France: Bodyguards escort nurses back from work following Paris assaults
Nurses working at Lariboisiere hospital in Paris were seen being escorted by bodyguards on their way to take the train back from work, following reports of an increased number of attempted assaults and muggings against them.
Footage filmed on Saturday shows a group of health workers being accompanied by the guards at the end of their shift to ensure their safety.
“Now I can say that we go back home in peace, being unafraid, not wondering if we are going to get assaulted. We saw the police interpellating aggressive people, some colleagues have been assaulted,” stated Samia, a nurse.
“I think those people are addicted to drugs or have problems. It is happening more often because there are fewer people in the streets so we can feel it more, so after several cases the hospital organised a security presence for us,” she added.
One of the security agents in charge of escorting the nurses, Ludo, highlighted the increased importance of making sure health workers stay safe during the outbreak of coronavirus. “Some people are in need, some people are drug addicts, some people just think of money, some others didn’t understand what confinement means, so it would be best that people that we need can work properly, people that are important in these times,” he said.
France has 83,031 registered cases of coronavirus and 7,574 deaths as of Saturday, according to Johns Hopkins University.

“Dozens of illegal migrants reached Britain’s shores over the weekend after being brought to Dover by the Border Force after being intercepted in the English Channel, despite coronavirus outbreaks at migrant camps in France.
On Saturday, Border Force stopped four boats filled with 53 migrants from Iraq, Iran, Syria, Kuwait, and Yemen — but, instead of escorting them back to France, simply brought them to Dover to undergo medical checks before being handed over to immigration officials.
The crossing comes just days after another group of 52 Iraqis, Iranians, and Afghans were brought ashore on Thursday.
Coronavirus cases have been confirmed an illegal migrant camps in Calais and Dunkirk — common launchpads for people seeking to break into Britain. There are believed to be around 3,000 migrants living in close quarters in such camps in northern France.
The founder of charity Care4Calais, Clare Moseley, warned that there could be an impending “humanitarian disaster” if the situation in migrant camps is not dealt with.
“This is a huge concern because here they can’t put in place the mitigation strategies that people are using elsewhere in Europe,” she said, in comments reported by The Sun.
“They can’t use social distancing, they can’t self-isolate and they can’t wash their hands,” she added, while calling for the “French state to intervene”
In response to the crossings, the Home Office said that Home Secretary Priti Patel and the French Minister of the Interior Christophe Castaner have “reaffirmed their commitment to tackling this issue since the outbreak of coronavirus.”
However, in 2019 just fifteen per cent of illegal boat migrants were deported by the British government, despite promises from Prime Minister Boris Johnson to send migrants back to Europe.”
Austria Says EU Migrant Redistribution ‘Has Failed’, Refuses Asylum Seekers (breitbart, Apr 5, 2020)

“Austria’s Europe minister has said that the EU’s compulsory migrant redistribution scheme “has failed” and member-states should be able to choose whether to accept migrants or not.
While some 150 non-governmental organisations have put pressure on Austria to accept Middle Eastern migrants stuck in Greece because of the worsening coronavirus pandemic, two government spokesmen have said that Austria will maintain its current policy and not accept any more asylum seekers.
“It remains a no,” confirmed Claudia Türtscher, the spokeswoman for Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg, of Chancellor Sebastian Kurz’s Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP), according to Kronen Zeitung.
Ms Türtscher referred the media back to Chancellor Kurz’s remarks from last month when he warned against the European Union transferring any migrants from Greece and attempting to redistribute them across the political bloc.
“If the European Union allows these people to enter, millions will be on their way,” the 33-year-old Austrian premier said last month, insisting that the best course of action for his country is “to support Greece as best as possible and to send a clear message as an EU”.
“If we take in the people who Erdo?an sends to the border, it won’t stay at 13,000. Then millions of people will set off,” he explained.
When Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdo?an opened the gates to Europe, allowing thousands of migrants to push their way into Greece, in late February, Austria called the move an attack on the European Union and asserted that it would not accept a single illegal alien.
Instead, Austria sent special police forces to Greece to help local authorities maintain the border and repel illegals.
The Austrian people back Chancellor Kurz’s stance, with a poll from March revealing a clear majority (61 per cent) reject taking migrants as part of an EU redistribution strategy.
Also on Thursday, Minister for Europe Karoline Edtstadler said that Austria does not want a new attempt to distribute asylum seekers and migrants in the EU, as Germany’s Angela Merkel had pressured European countries to do at the height of the migrant crisis in 2015-16.
“It is clear that the mandatory distribution of asylum seekers in the EU has failed,” Ms Edtstadler said on Thursday.
Since the EU’s failure to force all member-states to take migrants, the bloc has been trying to agree on a common asylum policy, which would see the management of mass migration through the obligatory acceptance of any and all migrants that touch EU soil.
Austria’s Europe minister said that she supports a “system of committed solidarity” whereby countries can choose how they want to contribute to the bloc’s asylum programme. Under her recommendations, countries can either accept migrants; contribute personnel to the EU’s border force, or just contribute financial aid.
The Austrian minister’s remarks come as the bloc’s top court ruled that Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Poland had broken EU law by refusing to comply with the migrant quota programme.
In January, before the onset of the second migrant crisis, Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán had hailed Austria’s Kurz as a “natural partner” in the fight against illegal mass migration.
On March 1st when Austria’s Interior Minister Karl Nehammer confirmed that his country would repel any migrants trying to enter their country, he said that he relied on neighbouring Hungary to stop the flow.
“Hungary has assured us that it will protect its borders as best it can, like Croatia’s,” Mr Nehammer told broadcaster ORF, according to Reuters.
“Should, despite that, people reach us, then they must be stopped,” he added.
Austria’s political parties also did not join 11 other countries that wrote a letter to the European People’s Party (EPP) euro-group demanding Mr Orbán’s pro-borders Fidesz party be expelled from its ranks in the European Parliament.”

METRO UK – Faima Bakar : The majority of sexual offenders are white men – there is no ‘Muslim problem’ with sexual grooming
Our series The State of Racism has been running over the past six weeks to illuminate just how prevalent racism is in the UK.
We’ve also been highlighting the unique dilemmas faced by certain groups, from black mums, to South Asian Muslims.
But every time I have written about Muslims, I have received one recurring comment, on my Facebook, Twitter, emails and in the article comments – ‘what about the grooming gangs?’.
Why is this brought up every time I mention an obstacle faced by Muslims? Do the crimes of a few speak for all Muslims?
Obviously not, but it seems this constant commenting about ‘Muslim grooming gangs’ is specifically being used to shut down important discussions about islamophobia.
And while it’s difficult to measure the ethnicity of sexual offenders, there is clear evidence in many reports that the majority have been white men, not Asian Muslims.
Almost 85 per cent of offenders found guilty of sexual activity with a minor in England and Wales in 2011 were white while four per cent were Asian.
Some have reported even higher figures, claiming that the number for white male offenders is 90 per cent.
To cite more recent stats, a 2017 report concluded that while there isn’t many available data in the area, the data we do have shows a large majority of those convicted of sexual offences (no matter the age of the victim) are white.
This may be due to having a higher proportion of white people in the UK and while it is concerning that some Muslim men make up a disproportionate number of offenders (which I discussed in an earlier article), the issue is that it seems to be framed as an exclusively ‘Muslim problem’.
There is nothing inherently about Islam that promotes this kind of behaviour.
To say it’s an intrinsically Muslim problem is a lazy, transparent tactic – and the inaccuracies behind these claims need to be dismantled in order to move the conversation on.
White men that make up these large figures don’t speak for all white men. So why do the crimes of some Muslim men typify all Muslim men?
Grooming gangs are only depicted to be an Asian or ‘Muslim’ problem because of a few high-profile cases and the media’s penchant to overreport certain types of stories.
The reasons people seem to be so consistently hung up on this issue is twofold; first because it reinforces already-held racist stereotypes of Muslim men as threatening and regressive.
And secondly, because the most oft-cited cases of sexual grooming involve white, working-class girls and women.
In the sexual exploitation cases of Rochdale and Rotherham in Yorskhire, there was extraordinary neglect against the, mostly white, victims aged 12-16.
How they were treated was largely due to classism and misogyny.
The girls were from working-class backgrounds, which is often thought to signify laziness or fecklessness. And they suffered misogyny – thought to be ‘available’ – a kind of oppression assigned to anyone who looks like a girl or woman and wears anything ‘suggestive’.
Consider this – had the victims also been of Asian and/or Muslim descent, would the uproar be the same?
There are actually Muslim victims of sexual exploitation but they’re often missed because of the focus on white victims.
We can also ask: if the perpetrators were also white – would their race be mentioned?
In this case, one of the most reported aspects was the commonality of the gangs – in terms of their ethnic and religious background.
The fact that whiteness so often goes unchecked and becomes an invisible default is one of the reasons we launched The State of Racism.
Granted, sexual abuse should always be taken seriously. But there is only one thing in common with sexual predators – the crimes they’ve committed.
But their background is oft mentioned because there’s an appetite to be fed about how backward Muslims are.
We see the same thing happen in cases of terrorism where attacks by Muslims receive 357 per cent more press attention then when white people do it.
These grooming gang cases are complex and there are racial elements to it – the perpetrators saw the girls as ‘easy meat’ because they were white and thought to be sexually loose.
This is, unquestionably, appalling and discriminatory behaviour from these Asian men.
Not all Muslims follow this backward way of thinking though.
And it’s not to say that Muslims have no problem with grooming either, quite the opposite. Islam as a religion is peaceful and vehemently opposes sexual violence.
Yorkshire police also admitted to being reluctant to report the men due to fears of racism accusations.
But arresting dangerous men, especially where there is evidence, is not racist.
Major neglect like this occurs because the UK is so ill-equipped to discuss and identify what racism really is.
Some people are more worried about looking racist, than they are concerned about doing the right thing.
These young girls were failed twice; by the men in their community who saw them as nothing but easy targets to quench their dark thirsts, and by the police who had their own interests in mind.
But they were not failed by all Muslims.
The way we see it, the men denounce themselves from Islam the moment they commit grotesque crimes.
So when they do commit them, they’re doing it as bad and dangerous men. Not as Muslim men.
These gangs deserve all our condemnation for the crimes they commit, but let’s not frame this as an intrinsically Muslim problem.

If NY Gov Cuomo Can Use National Guard Troops to Grab Ventilators, Why Not Guns?
I hope you’ve heard about Governor Cuomo’s plan to deal with the New York City COVID-19 crisis: grab ventilators and personal protective equipment (PPE) from up-state hospitals and ship them to NYC.
If Cuomo can get away with taking equipment — which he’s said “the entire state of New York” needs — to benefit New York City, what else can he rationalize? Be sure to check out his garden hose analogy.
Cuomo says his house is on fire. So he’s sending National Guard troops — wait…where do demographics show most NYNG troops come from? — to steal said neighbor’s garden hose because his own house is engulfed.
But it’s all good, because he promises to pay for the hose later if he doesn’t return it (how do you return used, contaminated PPE?). Too bad about the neighbor’s burnt-out house and the dead family inside. At least their hose will be paid for.
Now, we all know that Fredo’s big brother isn’t exactly a friend of the Second Amendment. Suppose he were to apply this same rationale to firearms. Imagine him declaring the rising NYC crime wave to be another COVID19-related emergency.

The WHO has been criticised for its handing and mixed messaging throughout the coronavirus pandemic which has currently seen over one million infections worldwide.
Mr Dean said the World Health Organisation “is a joke” and “the bloke who is now in charge of it has disgraced himself at every stage”.

Cuomo plans to use National Guard to seize ventilators from upstate facilities
ALBANY — Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that he would use the National Guard to take ventilators and protective equipment from hospitals and other health care facilities in upstate New York where they’re not in use to deploy the lifesaving equipment in the New York City area.
“I’m not going to be in a position where people are dying and we have several hundred ventilators in our own state, somewhere else,” Cuomo said on Friday during his daily briefing. “I apologize for the hardship to those institutions — ultimately there is no hardship, if you don’t get the ventilator back, I give you my personal word I will pay you for the ventilator — but I’m not going to let people die because we didn’t redeploy these ventilators.”

HANOI (Reuters) – Vietnam has lodged an official protest with China following the sinking of a Vietnamese fishing boat it said had been rammed by a Chinese maritime surveillance vessel near islands in the disputed South China Sea.
The Vietnamese fishing vessel, with eight fishermen onboard, was fishing near the Paracel Islands on Thursday when it was rammed and sunk by the Chinese vessel, Vietnam’s foreign ministry said in a statement posted on a government website on Saturday.
All the fishermen were picked up by the Chinese vessel alive and were transferred to two other Vietnamese fishing vessels operating nearby, the Vietnam Fisheries Society said in a statement posted to its website.
