This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

  18. South Africa to start 21-day lockdown on March 26

    South Africans are preparing for a government mandated 21-day lockdown to slow the spread of coronavirus. On Monday, the country’s president ordered residents to “stay home” for three weeks starting on March 26 and ending on April 16.

    Police will reportedly be enforcing the restrictions and non-essential businesses will be closed. There are now more than 400 confirmed cases of the virus in South Africa.

    “The nation wide lockdown is necessary to fundamentally disrupt the chain of transmission across society,” stated President Cyril Ramaphosa. “I have accordingly directed the South African National Defense Force to be deployed to support the South African Police Service.”

    MIGUEL PEREIRA, Brazil (Reuters) – Last Monday, housekeeper Cleonice Gonçalves suddenly fell ill while working at an apartment in Leblon, an exclusive neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro tucked between the mountains and the city’s famous beachfront.

    Her family called a taxi for the 63-year-old when they learned of her condition. It took Gonçalves two hours of traveling through twisting switchbacks to reach her home in the small town of Miguel Pereira, deep in the mountains. At around 6 p.m., she checked into the town’s local hospital, complaining of difficulty urinating.

  22. Mounting coronavirus cases test Spain’s health system, ice-rink morgue opens

    MADRID (Reuters) – Spain reported its sharpest daily increase in coronavirus cases on Tuesday with infections rising among health workers, while funeral vans began arriving at Madrid’s ice rink, hastily transformed into a makeshift morgue.

    The Health Ministry reported around 6,600 new cases and 500 deaths overnight. With nearly 40,000 cases and 2,696 deaths, Spain is Europe’s worst-hit country after Italy.

    Around 14% of all infections are among health workers, which health emergency chief Fernando Simon attributed to the limited availability of protective equipment and several early clusters of the virus occurring in hospitals.

    He also warned pressure on intensive-care units would continue after transmission of the virus among the general population had peaked.

    Echoing his concerns, nursing union SATSE called for test kits and for drastic measures to help prop up Madrid’s hospitals, which it said were on “the verge of collapse”.

  24. ‘Friend of coronavirus’: Police in north India shame those defying lockdown

    LUCKNOW, India (Reuters) – Police in India’s northern city of Meerut are making citizens who break its lockdown hold up signs reading, “I am a friend of coronavirus,” or “I am the enemy of society,” before posting their pictures on Twitter.

    Most of India, which had 482 infections and nine deaths by Tuesday, is under lockdown to curb the spread of the virus, including Meerut, in the most populous state of Uttar Pradesh.

    Mosque worker Mohammad Alim, 40, said he took a widow and her three sons to a police station in the city on his motorbike on Monday night to report an altercation with neighbors.

    “When I reached the police-station, the inspector handed me that shaming sign and clicked my picture,” Alim told Reuters.

    “I feel scared. I do not know who to complain to now,” added Alim, who also accused officers of verbally abusing him.

    Meerut police tweeted a picture of Alim holding a sign that read “I am a friend of coronavirus” with the caption, “Some people do not care about society’s safety.”

  28. Italian coronavirus cases seen “10 times higher” than official tally

    ROME (Reuters) – The number of coronavirus cases in Italy is probably 10 times higher than the official tally, the head of the agency collating the data said on Tuesday as the government readied new measures to force people to stay at home.

    Italy has seen more fatalities than any other country, with latest figures showing that 6,077 people have died from the infection in barely a month, while the number of confirmed cases has hit 64,000.

    However, testing for the disease has often been limited to people seeking hospital care, meaning that thousands of infections have certainly gone undetected.

    “A ratio of one certified case out of every 10 is credible,” Angelo Borrelli, the head of the Civil Protection Agency, told La Repubblica newspaper, indicating he believed as many as 640,000 people could have been infected.

    After four weeks of steep increases in deaths and cases, the growth rate has eased since Sunday, raising hopes that the most aggressive phase of the contagion might be over.

    “The official numbers of the last two days indicate a slowdown in the epidemic,” said Giorgio Gori, the mayor of Bergamo, a small city in the northern region of Lombardy that has suffered the heaviest death toll in the country.

    “A supercomputer has identified 77 drugs that could provide a framework to help researchers find a cure for coronavirus.

    A huge IBM supercomputer known as ‘Summit’ was tasked by Oak Ridge National Laboratory researchers with finding a potential cure to COVID-19.

    The study focused on the method the virus uses to bind to cells and searched for compounds that could prevent it from doing so.

    Researchers in the United States say they now have a list of drugs that could work to bind to the virus and prevent it from injecting cells.

    The study concluded: ‘We hypothesize the identified small-molecules may be repurposed to limit viral recognition of host cells and/or disrupt host-virus interactions.’

    Further experimental testing on the identified list of compounds is now required to determine whether any of them can be used to create a treatment for the virus.

    There is currently no vaccine or cure for COVID-19, which has killed 16,595 people and infected 383,944 globally.

    Co-author of the research Jeremy Smith said the supercomputer allowed the team to sift through a huge collection of data in a short period of time.

    ‘Summit was needed to rapidly get the simulation results we needed. It took us a day or two whereas it would have taken months on a normal computer,’ Smith said.

    ‘Our results don’t mean that we have found a cure or treatment for the coronavirus,’ he added.

    ‘We are very hopeful, though, that our computational findings will both inform future studies and provide a framework that experimentalists will use to further investigate these compounds.

    ‘Only then will we know whether any of them exhibit the characteristics needed to mitigate this virus.’

    It comes after a study in France showed that the antimalarial drug Plaquenil had promising effects on coronavirus patients.

    Twenty four COVID-19 patients were administered Plaquenil, and the virus disappeared in 75% of the cases six days after starting the treatment.”

    “For past 100 days, Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh area has been the epicentre of the protest against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as thousands of people have revolted against the law. The protest site had become the bone in the neck of authorities as it blocked an arterial road connecting Delhi to Noida.

    Hours after the people were removed from the protest site on Tuesday, anti-CAA protesters again gathered in Delhi’s southeast in the Saheen Bagh neighbourhood, defying the lockdown amid the coronavirus scare.

    People gathered in huge number in the streets of Shaheen Bagh despite prohibitons (section 144) imposed in the city by Delhi police till 31 March to break the chain of transmission of Covid-19. Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code bans assemblies of four or more people in one place.

    In the wee hours of 24 March, police along with security forces cleared eight protest sites across India’s capital by dismantling tents in various places, including Hauz Rani, Jamia University, Jaffrabad and Turkman Gate.

    Nine people, including six women were detained for violating prohibitory orders and resisting.

    About 50 protesters were at the venue when police vacated the site in Shaheen Bagh.

    “People at the protest site in Shaheen Bagh were requested today to clear the site as the lockdown has been imposed. But after they refused, action was taken against violators as the assembly was unlawful. The protest site has been cleared. Some protesters have been detained,” a top police official from Southeast Delhi said after clearing the protest site on Tuesday.

    Delhi police, along with Delhi Chief Arvind Kejriwal had urged the anti-CAA protesters to vacate the protest site due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The protesters had refused to end the agitation and said the sit-in would continue but necessary precautions would be taken.

    The Shaheen Bagh protest had dominated media headlines since it began on 15 December following the passage of Citizenship Law, which was introduced by the Narendra Modi government to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted religious minorities from three Muslim-majority nations – Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

    As per the latest data released by the Indian health ministry, Delhi has 30 coronavirus positive cases among the 492 total cases in the country. So far the viral infection has taken the lives of nine people. 32 states and union territories have been put under complete lockdown to break the chain of transmission of the virus, with public transport banned, borders sealed and a prohibitory order imposed.”

    Two security personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), responsible for counter-terror operations in the Kashmir valley, were killed in a fratricide incident in Kashmir on Tuesday, said police. The incident took place in the water wing camp of CRPF at Dal Lake in Srinagar.

    When a soldier or police officer kills someone he serves with, it is described as a ‘fratricide’.

    The Indian defence ministry recently revealed that nine cases of fratricide occurred in the armed forces between 2015 and January 2020.

    The number of cases of fratricides in 2015-2019 were – one in Army (2015); two in Army and one in Air Force (2016); one in Army (2017); one in Army (2018); two in Army and one in Air Force (2019).
    India has an elaborate mental health programme where, since 2009, sessions for stress management are organised for armed forces personnel at regular intervals.

    In December 2019, at least five members of India’s central armed police forces were killed and three others injured in a similar incident in Chattisgarh.

    A lot of suicide cases are also reported. In 2019, the Indian Navy (two), Air Force (20) and Army (73) reported 95 cases of suicide.
    Frustration and staying away from family are cited as the reasons that servicemen develop such tendencies, according to a senior armed forces official.

    Union Home Minister Amit Shah has asked security chiefs to ensure that a constable gets to stay with his family for about 100 days.”

But perhaps most starkly is the genuine concern that this once understanding set of islands could soon be overrun with cases of coronavirus, which has so far claimed more than 14,000 people’s lives across the globe, with hundreds of thousands also contracting the infection.

    Imogen Sudbery, the International Rescue Committee’s Director of Policy and Advocacy, told Express.co.uk, that if more isn’t done to stem this trend of people coming to the Greek islands without others being moved on, a “tinderbox is ready to explode” on the isles, which could cause devastation for years.

    At present, Ms Sudbery said there had been no confirmed cases of the coronavirus within the camps of refugees in Greece.

    “A man in the French city of Montpellier has been sentenced to eight months in prison for spitting on police officers and telling them that he had tested positive for the Wuhan coronavirus.

    The arrest of the man took place last week on Thursday night as he had broken into a local pharmacy to allegedly steal surgical masks. But the spitting incident did not occur until officers had taken him back to the local police station.

    David Leyraud, assistant regional secretary of the Alliance Police Occitanie union, told broadcaster France Bleu: “It was when he was in the cells of the Montpellier police station that he got angry and started spitting on the ground, insulting the police and yelling that he had coronavirus.”

    “When the police came closer to ask him to calm down, he spat on them. [The officer] had to put on a mask and handcuff him. He tried to bite them. Obviously, [the suspect] did not have a mask,” Leyraud added.

    According to the broadcaster, the incident comes after a 25-year-old woman in Loire was convicted for spitting at police.

    Mr Leyraud claimed there had been several other cases of people spitting at police since President Emmanuel Macron ordered the 15-day nationwide lockdown last week.

    “Every time, the police must be confined until they know if they have been infected,” Leyraud said.

    The quarantine measures are becoming increasingly difficult to enforce in the heavily migrant-populated no-go suburbs of Paris where local police told media that many migrant-background locals think the virus is a conspiracy to keep them off of the streets.

    “We are not going to give up. But we also know where these people live and how they live. Strict containment, for them, is just impossible,” one officer said.

    In Paris proper, locals in the 18th arrondissement, which is also home to a large migrant-background population, were found ignoring quarantine measures. A French journalist even witnessed a local woman purposely coughing in the faces of police officers.”

    “Libya’s oil company says economic fallout from a protracted blockade of its vital oil facilities has resulted in losses surpassing $3.5 billion at a time when the war-torn country struggles to prevent the new coronavirus.

    The National Oil Corporation, which dominates Libya’s critical oil industry, reported late Monday that production had been reduced to 95,837 barrels a day as of Sunday.

    Powerful tribes loyal to Libya’s eastern-based forces seized large export terminals and choked off major pipelines in January, aiming to starve the Tripoli-based government of crucial revenues.

    The eastern-based forces, led by military commander Khalifa Hifter, launched an offensive in April to capture the capital, Tripoli, clashing with an array of militias loosely allied with the U.N.-supported government. The fighting for Tripoli has ground to a stalemate in recent months.

    The national oil company said the over $3.5 billion losses date back to Jan. 17, with daily losses at more than $1.1 million. It warned of a looming fuel shortage, given the government’s inability to pay for imports.

    Oil, the lifeline of Libya’s economy, has long been a key factor in the civil war as rival authorities jostle for control of oil fields and state revenue. Libya has the ninth largest known oil reserves in the world and the biggest oil reserves in Africa.

    The closure of the oil facilities is seen as part of Hifter’s efforts to capture Tripoli and punish adversaries there for sealing security and maritime agreements with Turkey, which opened doors for military support from Ankara.

    Hifter’s side has accused the Tripoli-based administration of using oil revenues to finance militias and Syrian mercenaries sent by Turkey to help in the fighting against eastern-based forces.

    The corporation said it has spent over $300 million since the start of the blockade to purchase and transport fuel into eastern Libya.

    The shutdown also comes against the backdrop of a crumbling cease-fire mediated by Russia and Turkey, which support opposing sides of the conflict in the North African country.

    Authorities have not confirmed any cases of the virus, but public health officials fear the global pandemic could devastate Libya. Last week, the warring sides expressed commitment to a humanitarian pause in fighting so authorities could focus on preventing the spread of the new coronavirus. However, clashes have continued.

    Libya has been in turmoil since 2011, when a civil war toppled and killed longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.”

    “Boko Haram extremists killed at least 50 Nigerian soldiers in an ambush near Goneri village in northern Yobe state, according to military officials.

    The attack, one of the deadliest against troops recently, came as the military tried to launch an offensive against the militants that began over the weekend, according to a military official with knowledge of the operation. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to speak to the press about the matter.

    The troops were able to fight back and escape from the ambush on Saturday, he said. They were at a place called the Gorge and when they advanced they were attacked from the rear.

    Boko Haram militants inflicted heavy casualties by firing on the vehicles with rocket-propelled grenades and guns, he said. Those who survived are being treated at hospitals in Damaturu and Maiduguri.

    A senior army officer also confirmed the attack, saying he lost a friend and calling it a huge setback for Nigeria’s army.

    The military did not respond immediately to requests for confirmation of the attack and death toll.

    The EU was meant to be a world power that stood as a beacon for human rights and respect for the international rules-based order.

    But unless something is done about Greece’s treatment of refugees, and the frenzied support it still receives from the EU, that claim will collapse.

    I have long cautioned the EU to not be complacent about the challenges it faces, including the rise of extremism, xenophobia, Islamophobia and anti-Semitism. We have called for a revamped international system to manage the huge displacement of people fleeing conflicts such as Syria’s.

      The Islamic call to prayer was heard in what was once the center of Orthodoxy, Hagia Sophia, on Monday, as a video calling the former Byzantine cathedral “Hagia Sophia Mosque” on Youtube shows.

      Some analysts argue that it is no coincidence the act took place only two days before the anniversary of the declaration of the Greek War of Independence on March 25, 1821 and Greece’s liberation from Ottoman rule.

      This is the third year in a row that similar acts challenging the supposed status of Hagia Sophia as a secular museum have taken place in March.

    Stockholm (AFP) – While most of Europe is firmly locked down in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19, Sweden is taking a softer line, keeping primary schools, restaurants and bars open and even encouraging people to go outside for a nip of air.

    This stands in stark contrast to the urgent tone elsewhere and has sparked heated debate whether Sweden is really doing the right thing.

    “We cannot allow the human desperation in Wuhan and Bergamo to be repeated in Sweden. That would be a gamble that violates society’s most fundamental principle: that every person has an inherent value,” the editor-in-chief of Sweden’s biggest newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, wrote on Sunday, calling for either tougher measures or more widespread coronavirus testing.

    Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, in a televised speech on Sunday, urged people to “take responsibility” and follow the government’s recommendations.

    Those include working from home if you can, staying home if you feel sick, practice social distancing, and stay home if you belong to a risk group or are over the age of 70.

    Gatherings of more than 500 people have been banned — compared to more than two people in Britain and Germany — and the government has advised secondary schools and universities to close their facilities and conduct classes online.

    On Tuesday, the government announced that restaurants and bars would only be allowed to provide table service to avoid crowding but stopped short of actually closing them.

    Health authorities also urged people to reconsider trips to visit relatives over Easter.

    But for many, life is carrying on close to normal.

    Bars and restaurants were full at the weekend, and Stockholm’s city buses have been jam-packed at rush hour despite the social distancing recommendations.

    In contrast, neighbouring Norway two weeks ago rolled out the “most intrusive measures” seen in peacetime, including banning sports and cultural events, and shutting down schools and businesses.

    Sweden’s parliament has so far simply fast-tracked a bill allowing for the closure of primary and pre-schools — if deemed necessary.

    However, in line with the rest with the rest of the European Union, Sweden has shut its borders to non-necessary travel.

    – Experts rule –

    Grilled by media about their apparently relaxed response to the pandemic, Swedish politicians respond that the government will take its cue from experts at the country’s Public Health Agency.

    The agency has yet to call for stricter measures, arguing that the elderly should stay home, not children.

    “As soon as the Public Health Agency requests that the government make a decision, we will do it this quickly,” Health Minister Lena Hallengren, snapping her fingers, said earlier this month.

    But not everybody shares the government’s faith in the agency, with some accusing it of putting lives at risk.

    This has led to a stream of vitriol on social media directed at the agency and its main spokesperson, state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell.

    The amount of hateful comments became so overwhelming that the agency’s director, Johan Carlson, felt compelled to defend Tegnell, saying: “I think it’s close to unworthy, what he has been subjected to”.

    – ‘Sit on a park bench’ –

    The mounting pressure has not changed the authorities’ stance that draconian measures are not effective enough to justify their impact on society.

    On Monday, Sweden’s former state epidemiologist and current advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO), Johan Giesecke, encouraged Swedes to go out and enjoy the spring sun.

    “Bring a friend and walk a metre apart. Don’t hug your neighbour. Bring a thermos and sit on a park bench. It’s bad for your health to sit at home too,” Giesecke told broadcaster SVT’s morning show.

    Right or wrong, Sweden does not seem to have a worse virus problem than its neighbours, according to the numbers of declared cases.

    On Tuesday, Sweden reported 2,272 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, while Norway and Denmark — which each have around half the population of Sweden — reported 2,566 and 1,577 cases, respectively.

    All Scandinavian countries are however believed to have a big number of unknown cases as testing is only being done on patients with severe symptoms.

    While national broadcaster NRK and local media described the accused as “local man in his 20s”, according to the news outlet Document, however, his name suggests an immigrant background from the Middle East or Africa.

    One person has been charged in connection with arson at Dombås Church and an attempt to set Sel Church afire, Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported.

    The man has acknowledged both crimes. According to the court, the arsons were meant as revenge for the Quran-burning that occurred in Norway, allegedly without the police responding. The man was also found mentally unstable, as the police cited a risk of recurrence, if released.

    “As a reason for his actions, he explained that he was angry and vexed because a Norwegian man had set fire to the Quran, without the police having done anything about it”, Hedmarken district court wrote.

    NRK and local media described the accused as “local man in his 20s”. According to the news outlet Document, however, his name suggests an immigrant background from the Middle East or Africa.

    According to the man’s lawyer Ove Herman Frang, the arrested has been extensively questioned and is cooperating with the police.

    Dombås Church, built in 1939, was set afire the night of 20 February. The church suffered major internal damage in the blaze that made a strong impression on the local community. Concerns grew further when Sel Church also suffered attempted fire the night of 20 March, spurring the police to investigate the similarities between the two incidents.

    This weekend, two people were arrested in Dombås. One was put into custody for four weeks, the other was released upon interrogation.

    Bishop Solveig Fiske said the fires have been a huge burden for the local community.

    “I am relieved now that the police must have taken away the suspected arsonist”, the bishop said.

    In late 2019, Stop the Islamisation of Norway (SIAN), a Norwegian anti-Islamic organisation, set fire to the Quran during a demonstration that ended in a brawl. During the event supervised by over a dozen policemen, SIAN members slammed Islam as “fascist” and a religion of violence, even labelling Prophet Muhammad a “paedophile”.

    This event triggered strong reactions among Norway’s Muslims and even stirred a ripple across the Muslim world.

    Norway’s Muslim community has soared over the past few decades and is now estimated to constitute 5.7 percent of the country’s population of 5.2 million, accounting for well over 10 percent of the population in some municipalities.

    Quran burnings are a go-to method of ethno-nationalist Danish Party Stram Kurs (“Hard line”), whose leader Rasmus Paludan celebrates it as a token of free speech.

    Three people have been arrested in connection with a suspected arson attack at the Swiss-run One Happy Family community centre on the Greek island of Lesbos, according to Greek media reports.

    The centre, which is used as a meeting place for refugees, suffered extensive damage during the blaze on March 7, but no-one was hurt. It is located not far from the Kara Tepe refugee camp, where around 1,500 refugees and migrants live, including many children and families.

    The Greek ANA-MPA news agency on Saturday reported that local police had detained three suspects after viewing CCTV footage from surrounding businesses. The trio are said to be from Palestine with one of them holding a Greek passport.

    In the period leading to the blaze at the One Happy Family Centre, there had been repeated acts of violence by right-wing groups on Lesbos, which is just a few kilometres from the Turkish coast.

    This comes against the backdrop of a tense standoff between between Turkey and the European Union over who is responsible for the millions of migrants and refugees on Turkish territory and the thousands who have massed at the Greek border.

    Tens of thousands of migrants have been trying to get into Greece, an EU member state, since Turkey said on February 28 it would no longer try to keep them on its territory as agreed in 2016 with the EU in return for billions of euros in aid.

    Three Palestinians arrested for torching refugee camp on Greek island

    The three Palestinians allegedly torched the Swiss-run One Happy Family community center on Lesbos.

    BERLIN – Greek authorities arrested three Palestinians for setting ablaze a refugee camp on the island of Lesbos earlier this month.

    The Greek news outlet Sto Nisis (On the Island) reported on Saturday about the arrests in connection with the arson attack. According to the report, one of the Palestinians — a 59-year-old man – has a Greek passport and lives in Mytilene, the capital of Lesbos. The two other Palestinians live in Athens and traveled to Mytilene.

    The news outlet said a fourth suspect was involved in the arson attack. According to the On the Island report, the local police arrested the Palestinians after viewing CCTV video footage from nearby businesses.

    The three Palestinians allegedly torched the Swiss-run One Happy Family community center on Lesbos. The fire did not cause injuries to the 1,500 refugees and migrants who live at the camp.

    Dr. Nikos Michailidis, Professor of Anthropology University of Missouri, St. Louis, and a political and Turkey analyst, told The Jerusalem Post on Saturday: “Greece is a country that has always been protecting vulnerable people. This incident provoked criticism by some international media, but in light of the recent arrests of the three Palestinian arsonists, the criticism was unjustified and presumptive, to say the least.”

    He added that, “I would place this event in the broader context of what has recently been going on at the Greek-Turkish border, where the Erdogan regime has tried to send thousands of immigrants illegally to Greece in order to destabilize the country. It is also well-known that the Erdogan regime has developed close ties with Palestinian organizations around the world.”
