Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Jihadis freed early could be housed next to YOU (express, Feb 9, 2020)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1239787/Terror-jihadis-latest-crime-UK

“CONVICTED jihadis freed early from prison are being housed in the heart of communities at taxpayers’ expense, sometimes just a stone’s throw from potential terror targets.

One convicted terrorist who used his student loan to travel to Syria to join Islamic State was put in a house opposite a busy hotel and just 650 yards from Wembley Stadium, with Brent Council paying his rent.

Yahya Rashid, 23, travelled to the Turkey/Syria border with four others from Wembley Mosque in late 2014.

He returned to the UK in March 2015. In November, he was jailed for five years on terrorism charges.

He was released in 2018 and court records show he was living in Wembley when he was arrested for breaching his licence conditions in December 2019 after being found in possession of a secret mobile phone.

He will have to serve the remainder of his five-year sentence and a further 12 months for failing without reasonable excuse, to notify police of relevant contact details.

A Probation Service spokesman said a change in Rashid’s circumstances meant Brent Council had to move him to the property at short notice. He was previously in an “approved premises”.

The spokesman said: “Approval was only given following a thorough risk assessment by the probation service and police.

“The highest-risk offenders are housed in supervised probation accommodation following their release from prison.”

A Brent Council spokesman said: “We have a statutory requirement to provide accommodation for homeless people who meet the criteria of the legislation. This includes people who have a criminal conviction for a serious offence.”

Rashid is not the only jihadi to have been living in the community.

Sudesh Amman, 20, who was shot dead by police after stabbing two people in Streatham, south London, last Sunday, was staying at a bail hostel in nearby Tulse Hill.

Usman Khan, who murdered two people in the London Bridge attack in November, had been staying in a temporary hostel next to a pub in Stafford since his release in 2018.

Hate preacher Anjem Choudary was in a bail hostel in Camden, north London, after being released from jail.

Omar Latif, 36, one of eight men jailed with Khan in 2012 for plotting terror attacks, was given a council house in Cardiff after his release.

Records show he has set up a company described as selling via mail order and online, and shocked neighbours had no idea of his past.

Neither the Home Office nor South Wales Police refused to say what monitoring Latif is under.

? A CONVICTED terrorist was yesterday remanded in custody accused of failing to notify the authorities about an address where he previously lived. Mohammed Abdul Hasnath, 27, of Stepney, east London, appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court to face a charge of failing to comply with counter-terrorism conditions imposed after his release.”

  2. Germany: Turkish speaking men beat up a disabled man in the tram in front of his mother

Yesterday, Saturday, between 2.15 p.m. and about 3 p.m., a bodily injury was committed in the tram line S51 from Pforzheim to Karlsruhe or in Durlach station against a 37 year old man suffering from a mental disability. The man was in the company of his 58-year-old mother when, for reasons as yet unknown, an argument broke out with a group of two young men. In the course of this dispute, the 37-year-old was punched in the face. This incident took place in the front area of the tram. The mother fled with her son and got off at Durlach station. Here they escaped into an underpass. They were chased by the perpetrators, the 37-year-old son was kicked in the face by one of the men, and probably hit in the face several times by the other man. When the mother called for help, other passers-by joined them, which could prevent the aggressors from further attacks. The son suffered facial swelling from the blows and kicking. The perpetrators were two men, about 20 years old, 180 cm tall, slim, one of them was wearing a white T-shirt. The men could have been of Turkish origin because of the language they spoke. The perpetrators were accompanied by two women, also about 20 years old, who, however, did not actively involve themselves in the incident. The police are asking witnesses, especially those who came to the aid of the perpetrators, to contact the Karlsruhe-Durlach police station by calling 0721/49070.

  3. Comparing pathogens, how many people have died at the hands of communism, compared to the novel Coronavirus?

Supply chain interruptions resulting from this pandemic will illuminate our vulnerability to the former. Even now the CCP proves to be more concerned about propaganda than about saving lives and shutting down this bug. I guess they will stick with what they know best. Not very reliable partners in a globalised economy, to say the least.

Meanwhile, debates over who will head the Democrats in the next election favour Bernie Sanders, a communist. Regardless of that outcome, a few short years ago this fact would have be seen as ludicrous.

Meanwhile again, boring Dystopia to the north sits like an enormous, porous vessel filling with Reds and Greens. Soon, it will no longer be boring–in the worst of ways. Even now think Winnipeg.

In both Europe and North America, globalist collectivist George Soros is the hidden hand behind too much bad.

Now will be a good time for the novel Coronavirus to be re-sequenced again, but this time in an information laboratory. Splice into its genome the facts about the vileness of the communism that spread it. Let this information piggyback with the contagion while we do our best to help the good Chinese people. Do this by connecting the virus to communism in its very DNA by repeating the fact everywhere and always.

It’s difficult for me to find a greater disparity than the one I see between earnest, freedom-loving Chinese people expressing themselves, and Chinese communists. Think about all the videos we see of frightened desperate people talking to cameras from hospitals, or that tough man swimming across that river to Hong Kong. That’s serious stuff, folks.

Not letting a crisis go to waste can be a tactic used for good, not just evil. The Coronavirus may be mostly in Asia, still, but the worst pathogen is here and now.

    • People are much, much easier to control than viruses – and even communists know this…

      • There will be a more incidents of violence by the Dems, a lot more of them, all of the Dems actions and speeches since 2016 have created a perfect storm of hatred for Donald Trump and his supporters. Their continued dissertations that Trump stole the election with the aid of the Russians have made it the patriotic duty of the Dem supporters to ensure that Trump isn’t re-elected and if that takes violence so be it. Fortunately most of the Dems voters are smart enough that they aren’t buying into the lies, however there is still a sizable minority that are buying into the lies or taking the lies as a license to commit the political violence they thinkwill elect another Marxist to the White House.

  4. Historical church vandalized in Seega, Germany

In the time between the 05th of February 2020 and the 07th of February 2020 at 10:20 am the local church in Seega (photo above) was attacked by so far unknown perpetrators. On the spot, the police noticed that a window pane was smashed or broken by means of a pole, whereby the perpetrators left the pole in the church nave. Whether something was stolen by the perpetrators or whether there was only damage to property is currently the subject of further investigations.Witnesses of the crime are requested to report to the responsible police inspection.

  5. Imran Khan Promises In-Depth Probe as Skyrocketing Food Prices Hit Pakistan Hard (sputniknews, Feb 9, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/asia/202002091078265420-imran-khan-promises-in-depth-probe-as-skyrocketing-food-prices-hit-pakistan-hard/

“As per Pakistani government records, inflation rates reached a 12-year high of 14.6 percent in January. Prices of flour, which constitutes around 70 percent of calorie intake for an average Pakistani, and sugar have created major stress among the populace.

Facing severe protests and criticism about not being able to control food prices, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan reassured people on Sunday saying that agencies had launched in-depth probes into flour and sugar price hikes. Khan promised that those deemed responsible for any improper practices would be held accountable.

“I understand the difficulties ordinary people including salaried class are confronting and have decided, come what may, my government will be announcing various measures that will be taken to reduce prices of basic food items for the common man in Cabinet on Tuesday”, the prime minister said in a tweet.

The Imran Khan government, which completed 15 months in January after a landslide victory in 2018, has asked government agencies to find the reasons behind the rising costs for these essential commodities.

“The nation should rest assured that all those responsible will be held accountable and penalised”….”

  6. Christian icons to be presented in the section “Islamic art” in the Louvre

Artefacts from Bulgaria, Eastern Europe, came close to being presented as “European Turkey”, but as the title caused a scandal it will probably be changed. The artefacts, however, among which there are Christian icons, are to be presented in the section “Islamic art”.
The intention of the curator, who is an expert in Ottoman studies, is to present the artefacts as “influenced” by Islamic art.
Local experts say this is absurd.

  7. Swedish Fire Engineer: Rescue Services Lack Training for Explosions Epidemic (breitbart, Feb 9, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/02/09/swedish-fire-engineer-rescue-services-lack-training-for-explosions-epidemic/

“Swedish fire engineer Samuel Andersson has called on rescue services to be given more training on bombings explosions in order to increase their safety while performing their duties.

Andersson, who works as a fire engineer at the rescue service of Östra Götaland, said that many rescue workers lack the knowledge to safely assess conditions of buildings that have undergone heavy explosions, Sveriges Radio reports.

“We at the rescue service are not used to assessing the strength of buildings that have been damaged from a blast in that way. It was in many ways a new situation that we have not practised or been educated so much about, and that is something we have to get better at,” Andersson said.

Andersson was in charge of operations following the large-scale explosion that rocked an apartment building in Linköping last year and saw 25 residents injured as well as widespread damage to the building itself.

While the Swedish Agency for Social Protection and Preparedness (MSB) is able to assess the condition of buildings after explosions, Andersson noted that it took time for them to arrive at sites.

He said that rescue services need to be able to make judgements on the spot in order to facilitate any potential rescue operations as soon as possible and suggested that such large-scale explosions would likely occur again.

In 2019, Sweden saw over 250 explosions and bombings according to the Swedish Crime Prevention Council (Bra) but only seven people were convicted in cases relating to bombings that year.

Head of the national bomb protection Marie Borgh blamed the incredibly low rate of convictions on the difficulty in prosecuting individuals connected to bombing cases.

Bombings have continued into 2020, with a major explosion taking place in Östermalm last month. It was later revealed that the building, a residential apartment in a trendy area, was used as a drug-dealing centre for high-profile clients.”

  8. Greece Wants ‘Wall In the Sea’ to Stop Migrant Boats, Refugees Sent Back When Homeland Safe (breitbart, Feb 9, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/02/09/greece-wants-wall-in-sea-stop-migrant-boats-will-make-refugee-status-temporary/

“Greece will only grant refugee protection for three years as it struggles to integrate foreigners, the conservative government’s migration minister Notis Mitarachi said in remarks published Sunday.

Greece last year was the first EU port of entry for migrants and has struggled to manage the influx, with many kept in overcrowded camps on the Aegean Greek islands near the Turkish coast.

“The asylum we grant has a duration of three years, it is not indefinite,” Mitarachi told To Vima weekly.

“If conditions change in a country [of origin], asylum may not be renewed,” Mitarachi added.

“It is difficult to integrate different populations,” he said.

More than 36,000 asylum-seekers are currently crammed into camps on five islands, where the official capacity is for 6,200 people and in conditions repeatedly condemned by aid agencies.

Overpopulation in migrant camps on Lesbos and other islands near Turkey has led to an outpouring of anger in recent days among island residents and asylum-seekers.

Since the migration crisis erupted in 2015, mainly fuelled by the war in Syria, Greece has granted asylum to around 40,000 people, Mitarachi said.

Another 87,000 asylum applications are pending, he added.

Repatriation of asylum seekers whose applications are rejected are to be discussed in an overhaul of EU migration policy next month, the minister said.

“Joint return operations will figure prominently in the new European Commission proposals expected in March and April,” Mitarachi said.

The new government has introduced stricter asylum rules, and last month put out a call for a floating barrier in the Aegean to stop migrant boats.

The system — criticised as unethical and impractical by rights groups and opposition parties — could involve either barriers or nets, 2.7 kilometres (1.7 miles) long, and would be used as an emergency measure by the Greek armed forces.

Mitarachi on Sunday said the barrier project would be given a “tryout” and implemented only if deemed effective.”

  9. Illegal Migrants Mass Near Hungarian Border, Crossing Attempts Surge (breitbart, Feb 9, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/02/09/illegal-migrants-mass-near-hungarian-border-crossing-attempts-surge/

“Hungarian authorities have seen a surge in attempted border crossings so far this year, with a recent attempt allegedly motivated by false information given to migrants in Serbia.

Hungary re-opened its border crossing at the town of Tompa on Friday, after roughly 500 migrants had gathered there and demanded to be let into the European Union, holding English-language signs claiming, “We are only refugees, not criminals.”

The action followed a surge in the number of migrants attempting to cross from Serbia, which is not part of the European Union, into Hungary, which is, over the course of this year, with French newspaper Le Figaro claiming that around 3,400 migrants made attempts on border in January — several hundred more than in January of 2019.

The recent demonstrations were organised on social media and ended when Serbian police picked up the migrants, who mostly come from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Serbian Defense Minister Aleksandar Vulin said he was outraged over the demonstrations, saying that they had been organised by people spreading fake news and false information that the Hungarian border had been opened to migrants.

“People should be happy that Serbia has taken them in and is taking care of them,” Vulin said.

While Vulin did not mention who had been behind spreading the false rumours that the border was open, pro-migrant activists and NGOs have been accused of similar tactics during the height of the migrant crisis in Greece.

For example, in 2016, activists distributed incorrect maps to migrants near the Greek village of Idomeni and led them across a river to get around a fence erected on the border with North Macedonia. The escapade led to the death of three migrants, one of whom was a pregnant woman.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has largely blamed increased illegal migrant activity on pro-migrant NGOs affiliated with left-wing Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros.

“One would have to be blind not to see that migration in the Balkans is organized by the Soros Network. This is de facto migration consultancy,” Orban told Hungarian media following attempted border crossings last month.

“The Soros network is reaching the point where it wants to transform Europe into a mixed culture continent, possibly by eliminating nation-states. They will continue to push for this plan and will use all their tools,” Orban said in December.”

  10. Roadside bomb in SW Pakistan kills 1 soldier, wounds 5 (abcnews, Feb 9, 2020)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/roadside-bomb-sw-pakistan-kills-soldier-wounds-68859933

“A roadside bomb exploded near a Pakistani paramilitary vehicle in the restive southwestern Baluchistan province, killing one soldier and wounding five others, a local government official said Sunday.

The paramilitary troops were attacked while on patrol near the Sharag coal mines, according to Azeem Jan Damar, a deputy commissioner in Harnai district. He said the wounded were taken to a nearby medical facility.

Baluchistan province has been the scene of a low-level insurgency by separatists demanding more autonomy and a greater share in the region’s natural resources, such as gas and oil. The province shares a long border with Afghanistan and Iran.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blast, but such attacks on security forces in the past have been claimed by Baluch separatist groups…”

  11. Man accused of driving through Republican voter registration tent arrested
No one was injured; Jacksonville vehicle attack draws nationwide response

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Hours after a van plowed through a Republican Party tent where volunteers were registering voters, Jacksonville police arrested a 27-year-year man on two counts of aggravated assault on a person over 65 years old, criminal mischief and driving without a license.

Gregory William Loel Timm was identified as the person behind the wheel of the van that struck the tent set up the parking lot of a Walmart Superstore at the corner of Atlantic and Kernan boulevards about 3:50 p.m. Saturday.

Timm is accused of pulling up, driving through the tent and striking their tables.

“It happened so quickly,” said Nina Williams, a volunteer. “I just barely got out of the way.”

Democrats had a terrible launch to the 2020 primary season, and they know it.

The Associated Press reports that Democrat party leaders “are on edge over embarrassing technical issues that marred this past week’s Iowa caucuses, as well as lower than expected turnout in the leadoff state.” Adding to their anxiety are the doubts of the political viability of the so-called frontrunners, Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg, and the charges of sexism being raised by the supporters of Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar.

  13. China’s coronavirus deaths surpass SARS as country plans halting return to work

SHANGHAI/BEIJING (Reuters) – China raised the death toll from its coronavirus outbreak to 811 on Sunday, passing the number killed globally by the SARS epidemic, as authorities made plans for millions of people returning to work after an extended Lunar New Year break.

Many of China’s usually teeming cities have almost become ghost towns during the past two weeks as Communist Party rulers ordered virtual lockdowns, canceled flights, closed factories and shut schools.
    Report Ad

Even on Monday, a large number of workplaces and schools will remain closed and many white-collar employees will work from home.

The scale of the potential hit to an economy that has been the engine of global growth in recent years has taken a toll on financial markets, as shares slumped and investors switched into safe-havens such as gold, bonds and the Japanese yen.

China’s cabinet said on Sunday it would coordinate with transport authorities to ensure the smooth return to work of employees in key industries such as food and medicines.

The State Council’s special coronavirus group also said workers should return in “batches”, rather than all at once, in order to reduce infection risks.

  14. Scientist Who Discovered Ebola: Britain Faces ‘Major’ Coronavirus Outbreak (breitbart, Feb 9, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/02/09/britain-facing-major-outbreak-of-coronavirus/

“The United Kingdom is facing a “major outbreak” of the deadly coronavirus, warns the scientist who co-discovered the Ebola virus in Africa.

As the death toll for the coronavirus officially surpasses that of the SARS outbreak in 2003, the director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Peter Piot, said that he is “increasingly alarmed” by the rapidly spreading virus, saying that it is a “greater threat” than Ebola.

“It’s a greater threat because of the mode of transmission. The potential for spread is much, much higher. If the number of people who get infected is huge, then that will also kill a number of people”, Piot told The Times.

“In today’s world, no epidemic remains just a local affair. What happens thousands and thousands of miles from here in China has the potential of causing a major outbreak here”, warned the professor.

Mr Piot said that he is concerned about the capability of Britain’s socialised medical system, the National Health Service (NHS), to cope with an outbreak of the virus.

“You know how already overburdened the NHS is and if you’ve got a sudden major rise in cases of pneumonia or milder respiratory infections… The NHS can hardly cope with the normal situation,” he explained.

Professor Piot said that he believes the virus may not reach its apex until March and that the development of a vaccine before then is “unlikely”.

The professor said that a major concern for this virus is the number of people who remain symptomless despite carrying the coronavirus, saying that this new virus is more akin to swine flu and H1N1 in its ability to be transmitted than SARS.

Over 37,000 people have been confirmed to have the virus, with most cases happening in China, however seven British citizens have been confirmed to have contracted the coronavirus.

According to numbers from the Chinese Communist Party, 811 people have died from the virus.

On Sunday the British government chartered its final flight from Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak. The flight evacuated 105 British citizens and 95 Europeans, who will now be placed under quarantine at a conference centre in Milton Keynes, England.

Two Britons were prevented from boarding the flight after they failed temperature checks in China, the British ambassador, Dame Barbara Woodward told the BBC.

“We are in touch with them and will try and support them to get them onto another country’s flights as soon as possible,” said Woodward.”

    • Switzerland: Coronavirus probe team leaving for China next week – WHO chief

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that a WHO-led international team will leave for China on Monday or Tuesday, to investigate the coronavirus outbreak which originated in Hubei province, in Geneva on Saturday.

“The team leader will be leaving either Monday or Tuesday, that’s what we are aiming at now, and then the rest of the experts will also follow after that,” he confirmed.

The Director-General said that the number of cases in China stood at around 34,000 cases, with nearly 25,000 from Hubei, while 288 were reported outside of China.

Ghebreyesus further warned that despite a drop in the number of new cases in the past days, the spread of coronavirus could still accelerate. “While it’s still slow there is a window of opportunity that we should use to the maximum in order to have a better outcome and to further decrease the progress and ultimately stop it.”

    • SKY News – Coronavirus: ‘Gutted’ Briton wasn’t allowed to leave Wuhan because of two jackets

    • The coronavirus shows how badly China handles public health crises

In two months, the coronavirus that originated in Wuhan, China has spread to every province of China and at least 23 countries around the world. Journalists, scholars, and public health experts point to the lack of data and public communication in the initial and critical stage of the virus’s spread.

This pattern is not new. In 2019, a deadly pig virus called African swine fever started out as a local problem but eventually grew into a national crisis and a global threat. During the 2003 SARS epidemic, China was accused of hiding critical information and exacerbating the spread of the virus.

This special episode of Because China dives deep into why China keeps making the same mistake over and over again in addressing public health crises.

  15. Germany: Protesters call on govt. to take in more refugee children

Several hundred protesters marched to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin on Saturday to demand that Germany take in more child refugees who are stranded in Greece.

Under the slogan “we have space,” the protesters called for the end of literal and figurative borders which they claim lead to the deaths of many migrants.

“We demand safe passages not ‘frontex,'” said one activist, referring to the EU border and security agency.

The rally was joined by several left-wing groups, including Antifa Action, who marched with a “No cooperation with the AFD,” banner, referring to the recent Thuringia political crisis engulfing German headlines.

FDP Minister Thomas Kemmerich was elected head of state in Thuringia with the support of far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. He has already resigned.

  16. UK: Climate activists in ancient Greek costumes occupy British Museum to protest BP funding

Dozens of activists occupied the British Museum in London for the second day in a row, on Saturday, to protest BP’s funding of an exhibition.

The civil disobedience campaign was organised by the theatrical protest group BP or not BP, and it featured activists dressed in ancient Greek costumes chanting slogans against the involvement of multinational fossil fuel corporation in the museum’s exhibitions.

“We want to send a really strong message that it is not acceptable for our cultural spaces to associate themselves with fossil fuel companies and to low their reputations like this,” said one of the members of BP or not BP.

The protest began on Friday night when demonstrators dressed in character smuggled a 13-foot Trojan horse in the museum’s lobby which remains in the place.

Another member of the activist group suggested the head British Museum follow the example of the Royal Shakespeare Company who divested from their BP sponsorship deal in October of last year.

The protesters have reportedly tried to occupy the museum overnight in an effort to pressure the museum’s directors to cut ties with BP.

When he tried to help his daughter, he was beaten and threatened by the three rejected asylum seekers! The attack happened last Friday, just before 8:00 am. Sandra M.* (15 years old) walks after school with two 16-year-old friends to the Lago shopping centre in nearby Konstanz in Germany: Then they wait for the bus in Kreuzlingen in the Swiss canton of Thurgau at Bärenplatz square. It doesn’t take long, when the girls are approached by three men. “UTT Cenk Uygur CAIR event SHUT DOWN by PATRIOTS”

Cenk Uygur (Democratic Party) is running for election to the U.S. House to represent California’s 25th Congressional District. He is on the ballot in the primary election on March 3, 2020. He is running on a pro Islam, pro illegal alien platform. Local patriots showed up and shut the event down. CAIR usually employs this tactic, but this time, patriotic Americans banded together to turn the tables. This is a GREAT turn of events and a shining example of patriots defending against the evils of #civilizationJihad

  22. Clashes in border Kazakh village kill 8 and injure at least 40 others

Eight people died and more than 40 others were injured during clashes in southern Kazakhstan.

The government is trying to understand what sparked the riots. It is believed they involved the local Dungans Muslim minority

    • BBC – At least 10 people have died and dozens have been injured in reported ethnic clashes in Kazakhstan.

About 30 houses and 15 commercial properties were destroyed during the clash in Masanchi village on Friday.

Ethnic Kazakhs clashed with members of the Dungans, a Muslim group of Chinese origin, reports say.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said the area was “under the control” of the police and national guard. Officers arrested 47 people.

Fighting occurred in a number of settlements in the Kordai district between local residents, Mr Tokayev said at a press conference.

Mr Tokayev instructed security agencies to prosecute those spreading hate speech, “provocative rumours and disinformation”.

Footage posted to social media on Friday showed scenes of young men, some armed with clubs, marching along the road of a village with buildings ablaze on either side, AFP news agency reports.

A driver who takes passengers from Kazakhstan’s border with Kyrgyzstan to the Kazakh city of Almaty said Masanchi had been blocked off.

“It is calm. But you can’t get there now. The police and the army are there,” he added.

Information Minister Dauren Abayev claimed the incident had been sparked by an “everyday confrontation”. He added the bazaars (markets) had been closed in Almaty.

The area where the clashes took place is home to many members of the Dungan minority group.

  23. France Quietly Reintroducing the Crime of Blasphemy

    by Giulio Meotti

rance had just come out of the fifth anniversary of the massacre at its satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo than it was plunged into a similar case. On January 18, Mila O., a 16-year-old French girl, made insulting comments about Islam during an Instagram livestream.

“During her livestream, a Muslim boy asked her out in the comments, but she turned him down because she is gay. He responded by accusing her of racism and calling her a ‘dirty lesbian’. In an angry follow-up video, streamed immediately after she was insulted, Mila responded by saying that she ‘hates religion'”.

Mila continued, saying among other things:

      The “Jihad” Caucus

In May 2015, a group of 14 U.S. senators, led by Illinois Senator Dick Durbin and Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, wrote a letter to President Obama urging him to allow 65,000 Syrians into the United States as refugees. This would require a dramatic expansion of the refugee program, and virtually guarantee that a sizable number of ISIS fighters would slip in among them. Frank Gaffney’s Center for Security Policy called these Senators the “Jihad Caucus” because practically speaking, Jihad is what this request will bring.
The 14 senators demanding this massive influx of Syrians were: Dick Durbin, Amy Klobuchar, Al Franken, Patrick Leahy, Dianne Feinstein, Patty Murray, Robert Menendez, Sheldon Whitehouse, Jeanne Shaheen, Chris Coons, Tim Kaine, Ed Markey, Sherrod Brown, and Mazie Hirono.
These same 14 had sent another letter in April Demanding action on the Syrians.[42]

  24. Pope Francis Denounces ‘Plague’ of Human Trafficking (breitbart, Feb 9, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/02/09/pope-francis-denounces-plague-of-human-trafficking/

“Pope Francis condemned human trafficking as a “true plague” on Sunday, calling for an international effort to eradicate it.

Following his weekly prayer of the Angelus in Saint Peter’s Square, the pontiff recalled that Saturday was the World Day of Prayer and Reflection against Human Trafficking, set on the liturgical memory of Saint Josephine Bakhita, a former Sudanese slave who became a religious sister.

“To heal this plague – because it is a true plague! – exploiting the weakest, the commitment of all is needed: institutions, associations, and educational agencies,” the pope said.

Noting that criminal organizations are increasingly using modern means of communication to lure victims by deception, Francis called for education on the “healthy use of technological means” as well as reminding “the providers of such telematics services to their responsibilities.”

Francis has been an outspoken enemy of human trafficking, and despite his well-known promotion of international migration, acknowledged in early 2019 that “migratory routes are often used by traffickers and exploiters to recruit new victims.”

In 2017, an Italian public prosecutor said that investigators needed to follow the money trail, since huge financial allocations intended for the reception of migrants were attracting mafia interests and abetting human traffickers.

A lengthy report released at the time by Frontex, the border control agency of the European Union (EU), suggested that a number of NGOs had been complicit with human traffickers in providing a shuttle service from North Africa to Italy.

NGOs engaged in maritime rescue operations “help criminals achieve their objectives at minimum cost, strengthen their business model by increasing the chances of success,” the report stated.

In July 2017, the Associated Press (AP) reported that human traffickers smuggle “hundreds of thousands of migrants” across the Mediterranean Sea to Europe each year. “Traffickers have exploited widespread lawlessness in the violence-wracked, fractured North African nation [of Libya] to make it a smuggling haven,” AP stated.

In late 2018, Swedish courts convicted six Bulgarian nationals for smuggling in migrants and forcing them to beg on the streets in what became the country’s biggest-ever human-trafficking case.

The Bulgarians were given sentences between one and a half years to five and a half years in prison for their roles in the human smuggling ring that forced at least twenty victims to beg on the streets of various cities across the country.

In the spring of 2019, Italian officials investigated the head of migrant transport NGO “Mediterranea Saving Humans” for abetting illegal migration. Authorities interrogated Luca Casarini, who along with the commander of the vessel the Mare Jonio, Pietro Marrone, was investigated by the prosecutor’s office of Agrigento after the ship illegally entered Italian waters carrying migrants.

In May 2019, AP reported that Spanish police had arrested 11 people suspected of forming part of a human trafficking ring transporting migrants across the Mediterranean Sea in small boats unfit for the open water. The suspects recruited Moroccan adults and minors seeking to reach Europe, police said.

Once in Spain, members of the trafficking ring would take the migrants to safe houses where they were imprisoned until they paid another 1,000 euros, police said.

Last June, former interior minister Matteo Salvini refused permission for the NGO ship Sea-Watch to land in Italy, accusing them of human trafficking. “Sea Watch does trafficking in human beings and doesn’t care about the rules,” Salvini said, adding that he would never permit the ship to land in Italy.

A particularly tragic example of the immigration-trafficking link, however, is that of Nigeria, whose local mafias have been responsible for systematically trafficking women into Italy and forcing them into prostitution.

During the year 2016, more than a fifth of the 172,000 migrants arriving in Italy were from Nigeria, many of whom were lured into making the dangerous journey by a vigorous promotion campaign promising benefits and opportunities. The vast majority of the Nigerian women who made the voyage found themselves working as prostitutes once they arrived in Italy.

One 24-year-old Nigerian woman named Gloria Erobaga recounted the harrowing experience of forced prostitution on Italian streets, after she had been promised “honest work” by the mafia traffickers who arranged her passage to Italy.

“They would continually check up on us to collect our money and they killed the girls who didn’t pay,” she said. “I know of Nigerian women in Italy who were killed, cut up and thrown into black garbage bags, like trash,” she added.

According to reports in the Italian media at the time, Nigerian traffickers exploited Europe’s migrant crisis “to take girls to Libya and then across the Mediterranean into Italy,” bringing more than 12,000 girls and young women from Nigeria into Italy in just two years.

Of these, four out of five (80 percent) ended up in prostitution. Currently, one out of every two prostitutes in Italy is Nigerian, the report stated.

Matteo Salvini, who made curbing illegal immigration the hallmark of his election campaign, said last year he was “proud” to have put an end to illegal immigration in Italy and to have halted human traffickers who were using immigration routes to deal in human beings.

In a tweet to his followers, Mr. Salvini said that by combating illegal immigration he was also fighting human trafficking and the drug trade.

Decrying smugglers and human traffickers, Salvini said he had evidence that “with the money they make — around 3,000 euro for every person they put on the boat — they buy arms and drugs. So stopping the trafficking of human beings does not just mean stopping immigration, but it also means blocking weapon and drug trafficking.”

Salvini’s closed ports resulted in a significant drop in migrant sea deaths by discouraging would-be migrants from embarking on the perilous journey across the Mediterranean Sea.

According to a 2019 report by the Italian daily La Verità, “the Salvini method works,” referring to Mr. Salvini’s tightened border controls. Salvini had insisted that open ports fuel human trafficking and encourage migrants to undertake dangerous sea crossings.”

  25. UN refugee agency: Major rise in migrants stopped off Libya (abcnews, Feb 9, 2020)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/refugee-agency-major-rise-migrants-stopped-off-libya-68862785

“The U.N. refugee agency reported Friday that the total number of migrants intercepted by the Libyan coast guard in the past month rose 121% from the same period last year.

The UNHCR said in January alone, it registered 1,040 refugees and migrants the coast guard stopped and brought back to Libyan shores, a dramatic increase from the 469 rescued that month the year before. It classified the population as 70% men, 18% women and 12% children.

The relentless war in Libya has turned the country into a major conduit for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty in Africa and the Middle East.

In its attempts to stem the flow of migrants crossing the Mediterranean, the European Union has trained and funded Libya’s coast guard to keep the migration crisis off its shores. The figures show these efforts have not stopped people from boarding boats and making the journey.

It’s a contentious alliance. The coast guard catches and returns migrants to Libya, where they often land in squalid detention centers, notorious for rape and torture at the hands of militias.

Migrants have told The Associated Press that they were extorted and abused at facilities run by the interior ministry of Libya’s west-based government.

Last week, the UNHCR halted its operations at its Gathering and Departure Facility, which was intended as an alternative to detention but was overrun by migrants fleeing other Libyan-run centers. The Associated Press documented the dangerous and dehumanizing conditions at the facility last year.

The agency reported it continues to evacuate migrants to “safer locations,” adding that over 300 had agreed to resettle into the “urban community” with aid packages. The facility’s closing comes as fighting has intensified around the capital Tripoli.

After a pick-up truck packed with migrants crashed into a fuel tanker Thursday, killing six people and critically wounding 12, the International Organization for Migration warned of the urgent need to prosecute smugglers and traffickers in Libya.

“This incident is a stark reminder of the dangerous journeys desperate people endure, many of whom are fleeing conflict and poverty,” said Federico Soda, the agency director.

As a cease-fire in the war-torn country crumbles despite international diplomatic efforts, oil-rich Libya’s economy is unraveling. Tribes loyal to eastern-based forces laying siege to Tripoli have shut down oil fields and production facilities, starving Libya of its main revenue source to gain political leverage. The National Oil Corporation on Friday put the losses at more than $1 billion.”

  26. Iran again fails to put satellite into orbit amid US worries (abcnews, Feb 9, 2020)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/iran-rocket-launch-fails-put-satellite-orbit-68861878

“An Iranian rocket failed to put a satellite into orbit on Sunday, state television reported, the latest setback for a program the U.S. claims helps Tehran advance its ballistic missile program.

The launch happened at 7:15 p.m. local time at Imam Khomeini Spaceport in Iran’s Semnan province, some 230 kilometers (145 miles) southeast of Iran’s capital, Tehran. A Simorgh, or “Phoenix,” rocket couldn’t put the Zafar 1 communications satellite into orbit, however, due to a low speed, Iranian state TV reported.

“Stage-1 and stage-2 motors of the carrier functioned properly and the satellite was successfully detached from its carrier, but at the end of its path it did not reach the required speed for being put in the orbit,” Defense Ministry space program spokesman Ahmad Hosseini told state TV.

Hosseini still sought to portray the failure as a “remarkable” achievement for its space program. Previous Simorgh launches of the 80-ton satellite carrier suffered other failures.

In the days leading up to the launch, Iranian officials had been promoting the mission, including the country’s Information and Communications Technology Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi. His quick rise through the Islamic Republic’s carefully managed political system already is generating speculation he could be a candidate for Iran’s 2021 presidential campaign.

Jahromi acknowledged the unsuccessful launch in a tweet shortly after the news broke on state TV, comparing it to a “few samples of US launch failures.”

“But We’re UNSTOPPABLE! We have more Upcoming Great Iranian Satellites!” Jahromi tweeted in English, including a satellite emoji. He later tweeted in Farsi that “sometimes life does not go the way we like it to go.”

He added: “Please do not pay attention to fake news.”

The launch had been planned amid celebrations ahead of the February anniversary of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. Iran routinely unveils technological achievements for its armed forces, its space program and its nuclear efforts during this time. Satellite images by Colorado-based Maxar Technologies obtained by The Associated Press showed the launch tower for the rocket bore massive images of the revolution’s leader, the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, and the current Iranian supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran had spent just under 2 million euros to build the Zafar 1, Jahromi previously said. Officials planned for the satellite, whose name means “victory” in Farsi, to remain in orbit for 18 months before crashing back through the Earth’s atmosphere and disintegrating.

Sunday’s failure came after two failed launches of the Payam and Doosti satellites last year, as well as a launchpad rocket explosion in August. A separate fire at the Imam Khomeini Space Center in February 2019 also killed three researchers, authorities said at the time.

The rocket explosion in August drew even the attention of U.S. President Donald Trump, who later tweeted what appeared to be a classified surveillance image of the launch failure. The three failures in a row raised suspicion of outside interference in Iran’s program, something Trump himself hinted at by tweeting that the U.S. “was not involved in the catastrophic accident.”

Iran postponed the launch from Saturday, the same day the country faced a major cyberattack.

The U.S. alleges such satellite launches defy a U.N. Security Council resolution calling on Iran to undertake no activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons. American officials, as well as European nations, worry such launches could help Iran develop intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment and the White House did not immediately acknowledge the launch.

Iran, which long has said it does not seek nuclear weapons, maintains its satellite launches and rocket tests do not have a military component. Tehran also says it hasn’t violated the U.N. resolution as it only “called upon” Tehran not to conduct such tests. Western missile experts have also questioned the U.S. contention that Iran’s program could have a dual use for nuclear weapons.

Over the past decade, Iran has sent several short-lived satellites into orbit and in 2013 launched a monkey into space.

The launch comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the U.S. since Trump unilaterally withdrew America from Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers in May 2018. Iran since has begun breaking terms of the deal limiting its enrichment of uranium.

Meanwhile, a series of attacks across the Persian Gulf culminated with a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad killing Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani and a retaliatory ballistic missile strike by Iran on Iraqi bases housing American troops earlier this month. Iran also accidentally shot down a Ukrainian commercial airliner taking off from Tehran amid the tensions, killing all 176 people on board.

Earlier Sunday, Iran unveiled a new ballistic missile.”

The Syrian Army is making major gains inside Idlib in a military offensive condemned by Turkey and the United States, over the weekend capturing the key town of Saraqib from al-Qaeda linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.

Amid the military advance, the Syrian and Russian governments say they’ve recovered proof of US support for the anti-Assad al-Qaeda insurgent terrorists, publishing photographs of crates of weapons and supplies to state-run SANA:

  29. Al-Qaeda Member Turned MI6 Spy: ‘Deradicalisation’ of Terrorists Doesn’t Work (breitbart, Feb 9, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/02/09/deradicalization-of-terrorists-doesnt-work-says-ex-al-qaeda-member/

“A former member of al-Qaeda turned MI6 spy said that there “is no such thing as a rehabilitated jihadist” and that efforts by the British authorities to deradicalise convicted terrorists will not work.

Aimen Dean, who joined the Mujahideen at the age of fifteen and was later recruited into al-Qaeda by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who helped mastermind the September 11th terrorist attacks in New York, said that he doesn’t “believe in deradicalisation”.

The former terrorist, who went on to work as a spy for the British intelligence service MI6, told The Telegraph that Islamist terrorists are “extremely treacherous” and that if they don’t confess and help to do “damage” to their jihadist cause of their own volition like he did, “you can’t trust them.”

“The only way [a jihadist] can demonstrate that they’ve renounced violent extremism is if they have sung like a canary and provided damaging intelligence on the networks that recruited them,” said Dean.

Dean is calling for longer prison sentences for convicted terrorists, as well as “harsher” conditions so that terrorists are unable to “congregate” while imprisoned. He says that the attempts by the British government to deradicalise terrorists “are riddled with naivety and a lack of understanding.”

“Use the deterrent of much longer sentences and make them serve the minimum in its entirety unless they show remorse and co-operation. If you need another Belmarsh, build one,” he suggested.

Following the Streatham and London Bridge terror attacks, both of which were committed by terrorists that were released early from prison, the British government of the is planning to pass emergency, retrospective legislation to end the automatic early release of convicted terrorists. Dozens of Islamist terrorists are set to be released from prison in Britain in the coming months under current laws.

The legislation would end the automatic release of terrorist offenders — but still allow for the release of inmates who have served two-thirds of their sentence after a review from the Parole Board.

Aimen Dean said that the release of terrorists in the months and years ahead means that more terrorists will try to mimic the savage attacks committed by Sudesh Amman and Usman Khan, saying “the appeal of this kind of atrocity will intensify.”

“The dangerous message Amman and Khan have sent is that if you’re a convicted terrorist, you either go out in a blaze of glory or you’re watched for your whole life,” he added.

Last week Prime Minister Boris Johnson conceded that “really very few” Islamic terrorists can be rehabilitated.

“I think, looking at the problems we have with re-educating and reclaiming and rehabilitating people who succumb to Islamism, it’s very, very hard, and very tough, and it can happen, but the instances of success are really very few,” said Johnson.

“Deradicalising people is a very, very difficult thing to do… [there is] a big psychological barrier people find it hard to get back over — and that’s why I stress the importance of the custodial option,” he concluded.”

  30. Suicide Bomber Kills Soldier in Attack on Algeria Barracks (aawsat, Feb 9, 2020)
    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/2123106/suicide-bomber-kills-soldier-attack-algeria-barracks

“A suicide bomber attacked on Sunday a military barracks in southern Algeria, killing a soldier, the defense ministry said.

A ministry statement said the bombing took place in the Bordj Baji Mokhtar region.

It was not known who carried out the attack, the first suicide bombing in Algeria for several years, Reuters reported.

The conflict in neighboring Libya and deteriorating security across another of Algeria’s borders, in Mali, have both fed concerns of armed militant groups growing more active in the Sahara and Sahel regions of North Africa.

In 2013, a militant group staged an attack on the Tiguentourine gas processing facility in southern Algeria that killed dozens of people including foreigners.”

  31. Vision 2030 consolidates the approach of religious and cultural coexistence
    http://saudigazette.com.sa/article/588598/SAUDI-ARABIA/Vision-2030-consolidates-the-approach-of-religious-and-cultural-coexistence

“The World Interfaith Harmony Week, which falls in the first week of February (1-7) every year, aims to promote harmony between all peoples around the world regardless of their faith. It is a historical fact that Saudi Arabia embarked on a platform of interfaith dialogue nearly half a century ago when King Faisal sent a delegation to the Vatican. The first dialogue between Saudi Arabia and the followers of the Christianity took place in 1972 when a delegation of Saudi scholars visited the Vatican in line with King Faisal’s directive.

The objective of the World Interfaith Harmony Week is to achieve coexistence, peace and love between all religions and cultures at the level of the countries of the world as a whole, through organization of community volunteer activities that start from various platforms including that of mosques, churches, temples and synagogues.

Former deputy minister of Islamic affairs, endowments, call and guidance Dr. Tawfiq Al-Sudairi affirmed that dialogue is meant not between religions but between its followers. Speaking to Al-Arabiya.net, he said: “Ever since its inception, Saudi Arabia is based on the principles of tolerance, justice and acceptance of others, and this is obvious from the relations that Saudi Arabia has built with most of the countries of the world in its capacity as a founding member of many international organizations, the most important of which are the United Nations and the Arab League.”

    Vision 2030

Al-Sudairi that the Saudi Vision 2030, launched by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, consolidates the approach of coexistence, peace and love between various religions and cultures, and increases its power and strength.

He pointed out that the dialogue between followers of religions and those of other cultures in the world aims to achieve peaceful coexistence. “Many of those who call for exclusion and violence from different cultures make religion a cover for them and their false religious notions emanate from their wrong understanding of the faith and this prompted Saudi Arabia to strive from an early age to hold dialogue between followers of various religions and cultures.”

    Visit to the Vatican

Al-Sudairi noted that the first dialogue took place between Saudi Arabia and the followers of Christianity when a delegation of Saudi scholars visited the Vatican in 1972 in line with instructions from King Faisal, who directed at that time to embark on a dialogue with the Pope and other Christian leaders in the Vatican on many vital issues.

“Saudi Arabia seized every opportunity to promote dialogue, whether it is under the umbrella of international organizations such as the United Nations or others, and also established the King Abdullah International Center for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue (KAICIID). The founding countries of the center are Saudi Arabia, Spain and Austria, in addition to the Vatican as an observer founder.”

    Involvement in every

    dialogue initiative

Al-Sudairi pointed out that Saudi Arabia did not stop there, but rather tended to contribute to every activity, whether it was conference or programs at various levels related to dialogue between followers of religions and cultures to consolidate a culture of peace and love.

“This is what Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman have emphasized in many international fora in addition to their directives to the competent authorities, in the diplomatic, cultural and religious realms. All the Saudi authorities and institutions work in harmony in this field to reach the consolidation of a culture of peace throughout the world,” he said.

On achieving the goals, Al-Sudairi clarified that Saudi Arabia was able to achieve its goals through two tracks; the first is mature policies based on tolerance and justice and the inclusion of others with no compromise on fundamental principles, while the second track includes heading to institutional work on the issue of dialogue among followers of religions as the most permanent and consistent way in further consolidating the foundations of peace and love among peoples.

    Spreading peace and justice

In order to achieve a fruitful dialogue between followers of religions, Al-Sudairi affirmed that the efforts exerted in the field of dialogue do not affect the belief side of the followers of religions, but rather relate to matters of coexistence and spreading a culture of peace, love and justice in all parts of the world. He said that KAICIID hosted several meetings in which followers of various divine religions, cultures and philosophies from Asia, Africa, Latin America or other parts of the world participated. “The field is open to all since they live on this planet. This necessitates a formula for coexistence between people and dialogue, which is the need of the hour,” he added.”

  32. Egyptian parliament approves new amendments toughening anti-terror law
    http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/1/64/363184/Egypt/Politics-/Egyptian-parliament-approves-new-amendments-toughe.aspx

“The Egyptian parliament’s legislative and constitutional affairs committee approved on Sunday a new batch of amendments to the 94/2015 Anti-Terror Law that will focus on clamping down on sources of funding for terrorist crimes, and toughening penalties to include execution.

The approval comes just two weeks after the committee approved similar amendments to the 8/2015 law regulating the lists of terrorist entities.

Article 3 of the law will be amended to widen the definition of sources for funding terrorist acts.

“The crime of ‘funding terrorism’ shall take any of the following forms: collecting, obtaining, acquiring, supplying, transferring, and providing money or weapons, ammunition, explosives, equipment, statements, information, or material or others –directly or indirectly – and using any means, including digital or electronic forms, in order to be used in carrying out terrorist crimes or in providing a safe haven for one terrorist or more.”

The amendment will add a new paragraph to the above definition to state that sources of funding terrorism shall also include providing a place for training one terrorist or more, giving them weapons or documents in any way or form, as well as offering support and financing in order to help terrorists travel, even if the provider does not have a direct link to the terrorist crime.

Head of the legislative and constitutional affairs committee Bahaaeddin Abu Shoqa indicated that Article 13 dealing with penalties to be imposed on crimes of funding terrorism will be also amended.

“The scope of penalties will be expanded to be imposed on such crimes as helping individuals to travel from their native country to plan, prepare, participate or assist or carry out a terrorist activity in another country,” Abu Shoqa said.

“Individuals or entities involved in funding any of the above forms of terrorist activities shall be sentenced to life in prison, and individuals involved in funding an organisation designated as a terrorist one or helping it to carry out a terrorist act shall be executed, and they will also be required to pay a fine ranging from EGP 100,000 to EGP 3 million.”

The amendments to the 94/2015 anti-terror law as well as Law 8/2015 on terrorist entities could be discussed in a plenary session on Monday or Tuesday.”

  34. Islamabad administration strikes deal with Lal Masjid cleric
    https://tribune.com.pk/story/2153488/1-islamabad-administration-strikes-deal-lal-masjid-cleric/

“The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration on Sunday reached an agreement with deposed Lal Masjid Khateeb Maulana Abdul Aziz after three days of negotiations, allowing him to stay in the mosque as long he did not deliver sermons, according to a BBC Urdu report.

On February 7, the cleric had occupied the mosque and laid out his demands. Authorities in the federal had laid siege to the mosque and started negotiating with him.

Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Hamza Shafqaat confirmed that an agreement had been reached with Aziz and said its details would be announced soon.
The firebrand cleric told BBC Urdu that he had reached a verbal agreement with the authorities and a written pact would be prepared within three days.

“The Islamabad administration would not object to my stay in Lal Masjid and we will be handed over Rs35 million that we spent on Jamia Hafsa,” he said.

“Otherwise, the issue of the Jamia Hafsa building being constructed in Sector H-11 of Islamabad will remain controversial,” he added.

The issue of a disputed 20-kanal plot allotted to Jamia Hafsa in Islamabad is pending in the Supreme Court.

Aziz’s demands included the reconstruction of the old building of Jamia Hafsa adjacent to Lal Masjid. It was demolished because it was illegally constructed on government property.

According to police, they have been deployed around the mosque for three days. They added that the cleric was using around 100 female students accompanied by six or seven men as his shield to prevent the law enforcement agencies from removing him from the mosque.

Around 3,000 female students are present at the seminary in Sector H-11 in the federal capital.

During his time at the helm of the Lal Masjid, Aziz shot to prominence for his inflammatory sermons, advocating jihad against the West and a hardline interpretation of Islam.

By 2007 things had reached a tipping point. His armed followers had begun taking his message to the streets of the capital, vandalising CD and DVD stalls and kidnapping Chinese masseuses, with tensions quickly degenerating into murderous clashes.

When the regime of then-President Gen Pervez Musharraf launched an assault on the mosque on July 10, 2007, the army found itself facing heavily armed militants. The controversial operation was followed minute-by-minute on live television, with more than 100 people killed in the week-long effort to pacify the mosque and arrest its leaders.

The attack on the religious site sparked ferocious blowback from extremists across the country, marking the emergence of the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) – an umbrella organisation for militant groups targeting the Pakistani state.

In the following years, violence increased dramatically, with thousands of Pakistanis killed, maimed, or forced to flee their homes as security deteriorated. Aziz himself was arrested as he tried to flee the besieged mosque in a burqa, taken straight to a television studio and paraded in the garment – earning the nickname “Mullah Burqa”. He faced two dozen indictments, including incitement to hatred, murder and kidnapping. But Aziz was released on bail in 2009.

After his acquittal in all cases, the Shuhada Foundation, which handles legal affairs of Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa, had moved the Supreme Court for restoration of Aziz as the Lal Masjid Khateeb. Aziz also on multiple occasions tried to get back and lead Friday prayers at the mosque but the authorities always stood in his way.

The authorities later banned him from entering the mosque.”

  35. Over 60 Germans among Islamists in Idlib

“An analysis of text and video messages from jihadis in Idlib reveals over 60 Germans among their ranks, German media has reported. Syrian President Bashar Assad is determined to retake the region.

Over 60 Germans are fighting in Islamist groups in Idlib, the last stronghold of Islamist fighters in northwest Syria, according to reports German broadcaster SWR shared Sunday.

SWR reviewed transcripts of instant messages sent by the fighters and determined that the individuals are largely members of “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham,” a group with ties to al-Qaida. At least one person is working with the group “Junud al-Sham.”

Using messenger apps like Telegram, the fighters solicited financial aid from supporters back in Germany by way of text, video and voice messages.

“My brothers,” said one masked man in a video message, “if you could help, that would be very good. Even if you’re in Germany, [by donating,] it’s as if you’ve completed jihad.”

Supporters are instructed to send donations to an individual in Turkey via Western Union bank transfer or to use cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.

German security agencies are aware of the practice and said they have been monitoring the use of cryptocurrency to finance terrorism for some time.

Idlib is the final holdout of Islamist rebels in Syria, who are backed by Turkish support. Syrian ruler Bashar Assad, with help from Russia, has vowed to retake control of the region…”

  36. Christians in northeast Syria living in fear as Turkish forces, IS group active in region

“In northeastern Syria, the Christian community is more threatened than ever. Last October, it found itself caught in the middle of the battle between Turkish and Kurdish forces. Meanwhile, Islamic State group sleeper cells are active in the region and the Christian minority is one of their targets. Our reporters Chris Huby and Matthieu Delmas went to meet a community living in fear of kidnappings and attacks.

In northeastern Syria, the Christian minority is caught in the crossfire. When Turkey launched Operation “Peace Spring” against Kurdish YPG fighters on the Turkish-Syrian border last October 9, Christians found themselves surrounded by fighting. Turkish forces and their allies took control of a handful of predominantly Christian villages in the Khabur Valley.

Meanwhile, Islamic State (IS) group sleeper cells have been reactivated, targeting the Christian minority – whose members they consider heretics – and forcing US troops to take up positions in the villages in late January 2020.

The consequences have been disastrous. While international observers had hoped for the return of Christians to the region, the exact opposite occurred. In a new exodus of the Christian minority, many have fled to Europe, the United States or Australia, even if that meant leaving all their possessions behind.

Among those who have chosen to stay in Syria despite the danger and the economic crisis, some have taken up arms to ensure their own security. More than 2,000 Christians have organised themselves into militias. They fully intend to defend themselves against the enemy, whether it’s Turkish or jihadist.”
