Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. US Arrests Suspected Leader of Al-Qaeda’s Iraqi Cell in Arizona – Department of Justice (sputniknews, Feb 1, 2020)

“The US authorities arrested a resident of the state of Arizona, who was a suspected leader of the al-Qaeda* terrorist group’s cell in Iraq and was charged with murder in the Middle Eastern country, US Attorney’s Office District of Arizona said in a statement.

“On January 31, 2020, a Phoenix-area resident, who is alleged to have been the leader of a group of Al-Qaeda terrorists in Al-Fallujah, Iraq, appeared today before a federal magistrate judge in Phoenix, Arizona in connection with proceedings to extradite him to the Republic of Iraq. He is wanted to stand trial in Iraq for two charges of premeditated murder committed in 2006 in Al-Falluja,” the statement says.

The suspect, Ali Yousif Ahmed Al-Nouri, 42, was arrested after the US received a request for his extradition from the Iraqi authorities.

According to information provided to the US authorities by the Iraqi government, Ahmed was the leader of a terrorist cell that planned operations against the Iraqi police.
He is suspected of participating in the killings of police officers in June and October 2006. According to the US Justice Department, the final decision on the extradition of the suspect will be made by the US State Department.

  2. Erdogan Says Turkey to Remain in Libya ‘until Stability is Restored’ (aawsat, Feb 1, 2020)
    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/2109731/erdogan-says-turkey-remain-libya-%E2%80%98until-stability-restored%E2%80%99

“Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan underlined on Friday his country’s support to the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA), saying Ankara has not committed anything illegal in the north African country.

Ankara will remain in Libya until stability is restored, he vowed, amid reports that Turkey was sending African mercenaries to the country.

On Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron accused Erdogan of failing “to keep his word” to end meddling in Libya.

Specifically, Macron said Turkish ships had in recent days been seen taking ships laden with pro-Ankara Syrian mercenaries to Libya.

Erdogan meanwhile, continued to criticize Libyan National Army (LNA) commander Khalifa Haftar, saying he was obtaining funds from abroad and continuing his offensive against Tripoli, where the GNA is based.

Some countries are still supporting him with weapons, equipment, funds and mercenaries, he claimed before members of his Justice and Development party.

Turkey will not spare an effort in supporting the GNA, vowed Erdogan.

Turkey will not allow the insurgents – meaning the LNA supporters – “to do what they want in Libya”, he declared.

“Standing by Haftar the usurper instead of the legitimate government and Libyan people is a betrayal of democracy,” he claimed.”

  3. When US President Donald Trump released his “Deal of the Century” at the White House on January 28, it was a moving experience: Paradigms shifted. Although it is too early to say what else will result from this much anticipated plan, some three years in the making, the fresh approach and new paradigms are welcome. Trump changed the discourse and the diplomatic course. Gone was the “two states along 1967 borders” terminology; in was the recognition that Israel has historic, religious and cultural rights in its ancient homeland, and also has valid security needs.
Netanyahu and many on the Israeli side responded by declaring the date “historic.” The Palestinians declared a Day of Rage. It was typical. As a means of applying pressure, the Palestinians are willing to have a day of rage, or a week, or a month, year or eternity of rage, no matter how many people – Jews and Palestinians – die in the process.
Palestinian Authority head Mahmoud Abbas proclaimed “We say a thousand times: No, no and no to the ‘Deal of the Century’” and I had a flashback to PLO chief Yasser Arafat standing at the United Nations podium in 1974 giving his infamous speech: “Today I have come bearing an olive branch and a freedom fighter’s gun. Do not let the olive branch fall from my hand.”

    https://twitter.com/MgOqkzLBRPLCHyN/status/1223501809181872129

A Chinese epidemiologist warned this week that the novel Wuhan coronavirus is not limited to communication between humans.

Dr. Li Lanjuan of the Chinese National Health Commission made clear that mammals are generally at risk of passing the virus.

“If pets go out and have contact with an infected person, they have the chance to get infected. By then, pets need to be isolated. In addition to people, we should be careful with other mammals especially pets,” she told China Central Television (CCTV) Wednesday.

Chinese news outlets and the World Health Organization report that pet-to-person transmission remains theoretical as of now. The WHO declared an international emergency on Thursday.

The United States is currently dealing with confirmed cases of coronavirus in Illinois, Arizona, California, and Washington state as of Friday, January 31, according to the CDC. On Friday morning, the New York Daily News reported that NYPD officers were warned to avoid Elmhurst Hospital in Queens due to a potential case. The first domestic person-to-person transmission was announced Thursday in Illinois.

Note: Canada’s 3rd confirmed case of the coronavirus was a very mild case, where the symptoms were resolved in under 3 days…or so the voice on radio said.

So, this might burn itself out.

Another note: spent 4.5 hours waiting to see an MD today (yes, I live in Canada – the joys of socialized medicine…but I was lucky, I was allowed to wait instead of being turned away, like about 20 people who came in after me, but that is not the point.)

Masks, gloves and disinfectant wipes were available, but despite a crowded waiting room, I was the only one to use both the mask and the gloves.

As for the disinfectant wipes – there was a sign asking people to disinfect the self-check-in touch screen before using it. Sensible.

Even though the waiting room was full when I arrived, the disinfectant wipes container was still sealed. So, I opened it and used it…

A lot of people came in after me, but not one of them used either the gloves, the mask, nor the wipes.

And that is how you get an epidemic to spread…

  9. Attorneys for Julian Assange have their eyes on the looming criminal trial of a former CIA employee accused of providing his WikiLeaks website with classified information.

Barry J. Pollack, a lawyer for Mr. Assange, told The Washington Times that the WikiLeaks publisher’s legal team is interested in the outcome of the trial of Joshua Adam Schulte scheduled to start Monday.

Mr. Schulte, a former CIA software engineer, has been charged in connection with allegedly supplying WikiLeaks with agency hacking tools released by the website in 2017 under the name “Vault 7.”

Mr. Assange has not been charged with any crimes involving Vault 7, but rather he faces 18 criminal counts related to the soliciting and publication of classified U.S. military and diplomatic documents released by WikiLeaks nearly a decade earlier.

Nonetheless, Mr. Pollack indicated the Assange team is curious about the outcome of Mr. Schulte’s trial as it unfolds amid efforts by the Department of Justice to extradite his client from London to the U.S.

“It shouldn’t have any impact on the case against Assange,” Mr. Pollack said. “The [Assange] indictment has absolutely nothing to do with Vault 7 so there’s really no overlap actually in the two cases.”

  10. BBC accused of promoting ‘anti-British drivel’ by own presenter in incendiary outburst (express, Feb 1, 2020)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1236515/BBC-news-horrible-histories-Andrew-Neil-cbbc-British-UK-Brexit-news

“THE BBC was accused of producing “anti-British drivel” by one of its most senior presenters in an astonishing Twitter attack.

Andrew Neil criticised the corporation over a video posted on the CBBC Twitter feed. The two minute clip was from satirical children’s show Horrible Histories.

It was presented by comedian Nish Kumar who introduced the video with a reference to Britain’s EU departure.

The video features Queen Victoria being shocked to discover goods she enjoys, such as tea and sugar, are not actually produced in Britain.

Mr Neil commented: “This is anti-British drivel of a high order.

“Was any of the licence fee used to produce something purely designed to demean us?”

Critics pointed out it’s unlikely Queen Victoria would have thought either tea or sugar come from the UK.

Sugar was grown in the Caribbean whilst tea originated in China, but was later produced on mass in India.

The video clip has been viewed around a million times, partly because of the controversy it attracted.

In the introduction Mr Kumar comments: “Britain is striking out on its own and leaving Europe.”

He then adds, apparently sarcastically, “Go Britain!”

In the video the actress playing Queen Victoria and an actor portraying her butler sing about what things are actually British.

The butler claims there are “hardly any” British produced goods and sings “your British things are from abroad and most are frankly stolen”.

The video was also criticised by conservative commentator Iain Martin.

In response to the video Mr Martin tweeted: “Is the BBC on a mission to get itself closed down?”

However other social media users came to the BBC’s defence…”

  12. Scholar Decries ‘Farce’ of World Hijab Day (breitbart, Feb 1, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/02/01/scholar-decries-farce-of-world-hijab-day/

“Middle East scholar A. J. Caschetta has denounced the hypocrisy of “World Hijab Day”, saying that the holiday dishonours the countless Muslim women who are forced to wear the hijab against their will.

World Hijab Day (WHD) was invented in the United States in 2013 by Bronx resident Nazma Khan as a chance to “foster religious tolerance and understanding by inviting women (non-Hijabi Muslims/non-Muslims) to experience the hijab” every February 1st.

While ostensibly supporting a woman’s right to choose what she wears on her head, the event perpetuates the myth that women in countries such as Iran wear the hijab by choice rather than by imposition, Caschetta suggests in his January 30th essay in National Review.

As a result, Westerners who have no idea what it is like to live under an Islamist regime celebrate the hijab as if it were a clever fashion statement rather than the symbol of the oppression many Muslim women face, he notes.

Just last month, Iran’s female chess Grandmaster, Mitra Hejazipour, decided to take off her hijab during a chess tournament in Moscow and was immediately removed from the national chess team.

The Iran Chess Federation expelled the 27-year-old Hejazipour on January 2nd after she removed her hijab during the World Rapid & Blitz Chess Championship in Moscow, an act considered as defiant of the compulsory Islamic dress code.

“She has no place in the Islamic Republic’s national team anymore,” said Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of Iran’s Chess Federation.

For her part, Hejazipour said that she had decided “not to have a share in this horrendous lie and not to play the game of ‘We love the hijab and have no problem with it’ anymore.”

“It creates many limitations for women and deprives them of their basic rights. Is this protection? I say definitely not, it is solely and merely a limitation,” Hejazipour said.

Later that month, on January 20, Iran’s sole female Olympic medalist, Kimia Alizadeh, defected from Iran, saying she was “one of the millions of oppressed women in Iran whom they’ve been playing for years.”

“I wore whatever they told me and repeated whatever they ordered. Every sentence they ordered I repeated. None of us matter for them, we are just tools,” she said.

The 21-year-old posted on social media that she had decided to defect from Iran because she didn’t want to be part of “hypocrisy, lies, injustice and flattery.”

A number of Muslim women have joined in publicly opposing the western celebration of the hijab.

“As an Iranian who was beaten & jailed for opposing mandatory Hijab, I’m appalled to see Hijab celebrated in the West,” wrote Maryam Shariatmadari on social media.

“I have a dream for all women to be free one day. Free to choose what to wear, how to live, and what to think. Celebrating hijab destroys that dream,” she said.

In his essay, Caschetta notes the irony of the date chosen for World Hijab Day — February 1 — since this coincides with the day that Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned to Iran in 1979 to inaugurate the Islamic Revolution that would enforce “the separation, seclusion, and covering of women.”

While “enlightened” Westerners commemorate WHD as a chance to stand up for women’s right to choose “what they want to wear — whenever, wherever, and however,” they dishonour the millions of women living in the Muslim world forced to cover themselves, Caschetta observes.

“It might be easier to support WHD if it had a reciprocal component encouraging women throughout the Muslim world to really wear what they choose,” he concludes.”

  13. A politician of the German Left-wing Party accuses Greta’s Fridays For Future movement of having connections to pedophiles

Are there any connections between the climate movement “Fridays for Future” and the Green Party, between alleged paedophiles in the FFF and a paedophile member of the German Parliament in the Hamburg Social Democratic Party (SPD)? And if so, which ones? Or are the (still) implied serious accusations of the left-wing candidate for parliament, Tom Radtke, only the revenge and fantasies of a disappointed and crazy 18-year-old student? The police are investigating. There is no doubt: by posting his tweets, Radtke has placed a serious problem on the left wing of the Hamburg parliament as well as on the FFF and the Hamburg SPD. Radtke is a founding member of the FFF-Hamburg and knows the subject like no one else.He has accused Greta Thunberg’s movement of having occupied central Hamburg FFF Internet account jobs with members of the Green Party and hinted that he might also reveal something – probably unpleasant – about the German FFF main organizer Luisa Neubauer. His accusation that the FFF Hamburg has “dirty secrets” such as “the paedophiles at FFF Hamburg” and a particular paedophile at the SPD is particularly serious: “The Hamburg member of parliament should watch out, otherwise he will end up like his former colleague Edathy. I know the names of some of his victims,” Radtke tweets.Child pornographic photos were found at the home of SPD politician Edathy. In contrast to the Islam critic and ex-minister Thilo Sarrazin, who was expelled from the SPD because of his publications critical of migration, the pedophile Edathy may remain a member of the SPD.

  14. Islamic Terrorist Who Plotted Danish Newspaper Massacre Released in Sweden (breitbart, Feb 1, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/02/01/islamic-terrorist-who-plotted-danish-newspaper-massacre-released-in-sweden/

“A radical Islamic extremist who plotted to massacre the staff of Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten in 2010 has been released by Swedish authorities, despite plotting more attacks while in prison.

The man, who has not been identified by name, is said to be in his forties and was one of three Swedish citizens arrested as co-conspirators in the 2010 plot who were initially imprisoned in Denmark but later moved to Sweden, Aftonbladet reports.

During his time in prison, the Muslim radical is said to have plotted even more attacks, with instructions on how to make a bomb and a map of Copenhagen’s public transportation system being found in his cell.

He is also said to have behaved poorly after being transferred to a Swedish prison and told prison officials he was ready to “kill and murder” during his stay.

According to the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, the man later presented a much calmer temperament and no longer needed to be kept in a secure part of the prison in which he was housed.

Last year, after completing his sentence, the terror plotter was released, and he enrolled in a Swedish university in the spring of 2019. He is also said to have changed his name.

Jyllands-Posten became a major target for Islamic extremists after the paper published several cartoon depictions of the Islamic prophet Mohammed in September of 2005, with cartoonist Kurt Westergaard receiving numerous death threats and requiring police protection.

On the ten-year anniversary of the publication of the cartoons, Westergaard said, “They say that now we must show tolerance and we must be very careful that we don’t offend our fellow Muslim citizens. But the fact is that it is fear, and that is something very deplorable. Of course, I understand that people are afraid, I am also afraid, but I am more angry than I am afraid.””

  15. Left Party MP Tells Swedes to Hide Illegal Migrants Set for Deportation (breitbart, Feb 1, 2020)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/02/01/left-party-mp-tells-swedes-to-hide-illegal-migrants-set-for-deportation/

“Swedish Left Party MP Daniel Riazat has called on Swedes to purposely hide illegal migrants and bogus asylum seekers set for deportation from police in a social media post this week.

Mr Riazat made his post in reaction to an incident that took place at a school where his father is employed in the city of Falun in central Sweden that saw a student removed by police because of an existing deportation order, Nyheter Idag reports.

“My message to all who can: Hide a refugee. If it becomes illegal. Hide two! It’s called Civil Courage and Humanity!” Riazat wrote on social media platform Facebook.

“Should kids not even feel safe at school anymore?! What the hell is wrong with you disgusting people who can even imagine working with the police to expel your students?” Riazat said.

The sentiment is not the first controversial statement made by Riazat in recent years. In 2018, he blamed a series of car fires in Västra Frölunda in Gothenburg on the far right.

“The night’s events with masked men burning a large number of cars with one month left for the election were well-organised. Wouldn’t surprise me if the extreme right was involved in any way,” he said.

When questioned as to what made him think far-right extremists were behind the attack, Riazat had no answer beyond stating: “I said it wouldn’t surprise me.”

The social media post also comes just weeks after a former Social Democrat politician was arrested for allegedly helping to smuggle migrants into Sweden illegally.

Syrian-born Rashad Alasaad was the subject of an investigation by Swedish newspaper Expressen, which revealed that he charged 3,000 euros for adults and 2,000 for children for passport documents to help them reach Sweden.

His arrest, in turn, took place just over a year after Swedish journalist Fredrik Önnevall was convicted of people-smuggling. Önnevall, along with three others, helped smuggle a 15-year-old Syrian boy from Greece in 2014.”

So proclaimed my professor during one of his lectures on the subject of “scientific communism” while the former country of Czechoslovakia was still under communist control.
I was reminded of his blustery pronouncement the first time I encountered the spurious claim that “a consensus of 97 percent of scientists agree global warming is man-made.” Most people don’t question scientific statements because they think they are facts. They do not understand that scientific statements must always be challenged, because science is not about “consensus;” ideology is.

Over the past few days, the mainstream press has vigorously pushed back against a theory about the origins of the coronavirus that has now infected as many as 70,000+ people in Wuhan alone (depending on whom you believe). The theory is that China obtained the coronavirus via a Canadian research program, and started molding it into a bioweapon at the Institute of Virology in Wuhan. Politifact pointed the finger at Zero Hedge, in particular, though the story was widely shared across independent-leaning media.

The theory is that the virus, which was developed by infectious disease experts to function as a bio-weapon, originated in the Wuhan-based lab of Dr. Peng Zhou, China’s preeminent researcher of bat immune systems, specifically in how their immune systems adapt to the presence of viruses like coronavirus and other destructive viruses. Somehow, the virus escaped from the lab, and the Hunan fish market where the virus supposedly originated is merely a ruse.

Now, a respected epidemiologist who recently caught flack for claiming in a twitter threat that the virus appeared to be much more contagious than initially believed is pointing out irregularities in the virus’s genome that suggests it might have been genetically engineered for the purposes of a weapon, and not just any weapon but the deadliest one of all.

In “Uncanny similarity of unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV spike protein to HIV-1 gp120 and Gag”, Indian researchers are baffled by segments of the virus’s RNA that have no relation to other coronaviruses like SARS, and instead appear to be closer to HIV. The virus even responds to treatment by HIV medications.

  20. Abbas Says Palestinian National Authority Severing All Ties With Washington Including Security (sputniknews, Feb 1, 2020)
    https://sputniknews.com/world/202002011078200597-abbas-says-palestinian-national-authority-severing-all-ties-with-washington-including-security/

“The Palestinian Authority warned in the past that it would not accept the “deal of the century”, unveiled by President Donald Trump on 28 January, citing perceived US bias in favour of the Jewish state.

Head of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas has stated that all ties including cooperation on security, between Israel and the US on the one side and the Palestinians on the other will be severed following the publication of Trump’s “deal of the century” peace plan, which he sees as a rejection of all previously reached accords as well as of international law.

The PNA president stated that the “deal of the century” can’t be the basis for a future peace deal with Israel under any conditions.

“There is no place for even a part of the American deal on the negotiating table”, the PNA president said.

Abbas further stated that he sent official notification to the US saying that the PNA rejects the American peace plan to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The PNA president added that despite the cut in ties and opposition from some Palestinian factions, he still remains committed to the Authority’s demilitarisation.

Rebecca Huntley, a prominent Aussie academic, is concerned voters choose politicians with inadequate climate policies. Her solution is for people who dismiss the urgency of the alleged climate crisis to be driven from positions of power, and prevented from making donations to political parties. Rebecca is advocating that a group she doesn’t like, “climate dismissives”, be excluded from full participation in the democratic process, by “stopping the flow of their donations to political parties”, and by “driving the dismissive group out” of power. 25. TRANSGENDER COP v DISABLED TEENAGER: A COURTROOM DRAMA FOR OUR TIME
A transgender police officer and a teenager with Asperger syndrome walk into a courtroom. It’s not a joke, and it ends with the disabled teen under house arrest for a hate crime. Welcome to intersectional Britain. PCSO Connor Freel was born a woman, but now identifies as a man. A transgender activist and police officer, Freel was on foot patrol in the northern Welsh town of Mold last October when he was heckled by 19-year-old Declan Armstrong, who shouted “Is it a boy or is it a girl?” at him. Freel’s counsel told the court that the 25-year-old officer now feels “reluctant” to patrol by himself in the future. If a police officer can be scared off the street by an offensive remark, how can he ever hope to protect the public from terrorism, knife crime, and drug gangs? Graham Dockery

  26. CHINESE CENSORSHIP GOES GLOBAL: FACEBOOK AGREES TO DELETE CORONA VIRUS POSTS FLAGGED BY CHINA
Facebook has agreed to comply with Chinese health authority requests to delete “misinformation” about the Corona Virus outbreak. This kind of heavy handed censorship is the main reason nobody trusts the Chinese Government to tell the truth. Facebook allowing the Chinese government to control Facebook content will not stop the rumours spreading, with the TOR network and plain old telephone calls, there is no longer a way to stop the flow of information and rumours other than to shut down everything – and shutting down all communication would send its own message. Are there plenty of lies flying about regarding the Corona Virus? Almost certainly. Could some of the lies lead to harm? Very likely. But I suspect the Chinese Government is doing its own share of lying, just as they allegedly lied and attempted to cover up the severity of the SARS outbreak. In the Information Age, the way to respond to wild rumours is to answer them, to provide evidence the rumours are untrue, to invite trusted third parties to corroborate official statements, not to try to silence critics. Unless the official statements are lies, in which case this is not an option. Facebook accepting direction from Chinese censors just means people have no reason to trust Facebook. Eric Worrall

  28. DRAMATIC EUTHANASIA TRIAL ENDS IN ACQUITTAL FOR ALL THREE BELGIAN DOCTORS
Ultimately, it seems, it was the euthanasia law itself which was on trial. The defence emphasised that the doctors were motivated by mercy and that they had merely erred in their paperwork. The prosecution insisted that doctors are required to abide by the law and that Tine was not seriously ill. The argument of the defence that one can kill a person if he is in good faith is legal nonsense. They have put the will of their patient above the law and their own oath.” “There is no check by the euthanasia committee and no judicial check is now possible. Euthanasia has become a matter of course, a generalized right to suicide. The will of the individual becomes the only law.” Van Steenbrugge was delighted at the result. He said that a conviction would have set a dangerous precedent in Belgium, making many doctors reluctant to perform euthanasia. Michael Cook

will sign an executive order on Friday meant to combat human trafficking and online child exploitation, including by adding a new position at the White House to focus on the issue.

White House Domestic Policy Council Director Joe Grogan said Friday that the new executive order establishes a position in the White House domestic policy office “solely devoted” to work on combating human trafficking.

“This is an all-of-government approach with a number of agencies involved,” Grogan said. “Having someone established here in the White House who can coordinate on all these activities is going to really give us a leg up in combating human trafficking.”

Trump is slated to deliver remarks at a summit on human trafficking in the East Room of the White House Friday afternoon recognizing the 20th anniversary of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act.

  31. Detail.

Detail, detail, and more documented detail.

Peter Schweizer has written one best-selling book after another, in which the central focus of his ongoing war on political corruption is seriously documented detail.

Past books such as Clinton Cash: The Untold Story of How and Why Foreign Governments and Businesses Helped Make Bill and Hillary Rich and Secret Empires: How the American Political Class Hides Corruption and Enriches Family and Friends were virtuoso documentation of the blatant corruption by elites of America’s political class.

Now comes Profiles in Corruption: Abuse of Power by America’s Progressive Elite. And it could not possibly come at a more appropriate — not to mention necessary — time than when President Donald Trump is facing impeachment charges for calling attention to the corrupt activities of the Biden family — in Ukraine and around the world.

Here, in stunning detail, the Biden corruption is laid bare.Profiles in Corruption: Abuse of Power by America’s Progressive Elite.

Yes, of course, Joe’s son Hunter and his infamous dealings in the Ukraine with Burisma, the corrupt Ukrainian energy company, are a focus. So too his China dealings. But in fact what Schweizer illustrates is the Biden family method of operation, the pattern of leveraging political power for personal financial benefit at play not only with Hunter in Ukraine but also with Hunter elsewhere and, along with Hunter, other Biden family members using the same MO.

There is Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware fighting against a bill “that would require credit card companies to provide better warnings about the perils of making only minimum monthly payments.” And lo and behold:

  32. Militants kill dozens in east Congo as attacks on civilians intensify (reuters, Feb 1, 2020)
    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-congo-violence/militants-kill-dozens-in-east-congo-as-attacks-on-civilians-intensify-idUSKBN1ZV3OS

“Suspected Islamist militants killed at least 62 civilians in a series of attacks this week in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where the army is waging a counter-insurgency campaign against the rebels, the government said on Saturday.

The upsurge in violence after a period of relative calm in early January undercuts government claims of security progress against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan Islamist group active in Beni territory.

Rights group CEPADHO said ADF fighters had killed at least 74 civilians, many of them women and children, with knives and guns. It said the attacks spanned about 10 villages over the course of less than 48 hours.

The army has repeatedly claimed to have made sweeping progress against the group by killing several top commanders and capturing many of the its camps in the dense forests near the Ugandan border.

But the ADF, which arrived in Congo from Uganda in the 1990s, has survived frequent onslaughts from Congolese force and U.N. peacekeepers, and taken revenge on civilian populations.

It is one of dozens of armed groups active in Congo’s mineral-rich eastern borderlands, where regional wars around the turn of the century resulted in millions of deaths.

Officials said on Wednesday that at least 30 people had been killed overnight near the city of Oicha. Civil society activists reported that dozens more civilians were killed in attacks on nearby villages on Thursday.

The government provided the death toll of 62 in the minutes of a cabinet meeting, without offering any additional details. It said the army was “dismantling the networks of collaborators and other agents thanks to information provided by captured ADF fighters”.

The Kivu Security Tracker, a research initiative that maps unrest in the region, said the latest attacks bring to at least 312 the number of civilian killed by the ADF in Beni since Congo’s army launched its offensive on Oct. 30.

Islamic State has publicly claimed responsibility for several attacks carried out in Beni territory, but the United Nations and various researchers have been unable to confirm any direct link between IS and the ADF.”

  36. Iran: Tehran celebrates “Ten-Day Dawn” ahead of Islamic Revolution”s 41st anniv.

Thousands including religious and military figures attended a ceremony in the Mausoleum of the first supreme leader of Iran Ruhollah Khomeini to mark the beginning of the celebrations marking the 41st anniversary of the victory of Islamic Revolution, in Tehran on Saturday.

Chants of “Death to the US, Death to the UK, and Death to Israel” echoed in the gilded halls of the Mausoleum of the late founder of the Islamic Republic whose return from exile on February 1, 1979, later culminated in the so-called victory of the Republic on February 11.

Iranian Tehran provisional Friday Prayers Leader Mohammad Javad Haj Ali Akbari addressed the audience in the ceremony decrying the new deal of the century that is the Middle East peace plan put forth by the US President Donald.

“Our ideal is the elimination of the illegitimate regime of Zionism from the map of the world and this is what our Imam [Khomeini] determined for us and our nation,” said Ali Akbari.

Each year in Iran, the Islamic Revolution is commemorated from February 1 to February 11, a period known as ‘Ten-Day Dawn.’
